Transcript
- 0:00Hello, there. It's time for most things
- 0:04Kenobi. Hi everyone, welcome to another
- 0:19episode of most things Kenobi. A podcast about Obi-Wan Kenobi
- 0:23and all things Star Wars. I'm your host Lauren, and I'm
- 0:27your host Leanne, and this week, we are going to discuss
- 0:32entrances. And exits.
- 0:34Yeah, which is a lot harder than we ever thought possible.
- 0:40Yes. Well, this was recommended To Us
- 0:42by one of our listeners, they emailed us and gave us this idea
- 0:46and it's such a good idea but what?
- 0:48Once we got into it, we started to realize, it's a little
- 0:52complicated. Yeah.
- 0:54Well before we talk about all of this and what the entrances, the
- 0:58exits, everything in between, we have a special message for one
- 1:02of our friends, and our patrons, and probably are one of our
- 1:06biggest supporters of the podcast.
- 1:08Yes. Oh my gosh.
- 1:09And every way possible supports us emotionally, yes, financially
- 1:16friendship-wise, like it's It's truly meaningful relationship
- 1:21and I'm so grateful to have met him Jedi Master Adam yes, Jedi
- 1:26Master Adam, he's recuperating as we speak our listeners and
- 1:31our patrons and everyone who supports the podcast.
- 1:33They mean a lot to us. Yeah.
- 1:36And Jedi Master, Adam means a lot to us.
- 1:38So, we are wishing you? Well, speedy, recovery friend.
- 1:42Yes, May the force be with you. Hopefully this episode brings
- 1:45some laughter and to your day. And As you up.
- 1:48Yeah we hope you get better soon and so grateful.
- 1:52I got to meet you at Celebration and lie and you got to meet him
- 1:55in person as well. It did yes it's a real pleasure
- 1:58and a rare treat for us. We don't get to meet our
- 2:01listeners in person that also that.
- 2:03And I just, I love it. I love it.
- 2:05It's really cool. It's really cool what this
- 2:08podcast has brought together. Yes, agreed.
- 2:13And now on to the mess, this is a mess.
- 2:18Oh my God. We literally had to iron out.
- 2:21How the hell we were going to do this because it seemed quite
- 2:24simple by definition, right? So characters, entrances there,
- 2:30exits. What our favorite one is?
- 2:32We're going to try a boil it down to that, but when I was
- 2:35researching it, I realized like, oh God, some of these characters
- 2:40show up in sequels, some of these To show up in the
- 2:43Mandalorian. Some of them are not ghosts.
- 2:47Some of them are Force ghosts after.
- 2:49So it's like we didn't know how to handle all of this.
- 2:53The original concept was kind of like, when's the first time you
- 2:56see them compared to the last time you see them and that keeps
- 3:00changing the more dominant comes out.
- 3:03So I was like, okay. So OB 1 the first time we see
- 3:07him is an old man. So do we talk about that or do
- 3:10we talk about the first time we see?
- 3:12See him as a young man, it just got really complicated.
- 3:15Got it got complicated really fast.
- 3:19So Lauren had the idea, let's bottle this funnel it down into
- 3:23pieces installments. Like you often have to do
- 3:26because the Star Wars universe is massive.
- 3:28Right, so what we did was we split up five characters each
- 3:32from the original trilogy and we'll just deal with the
- 3:34original trilogy this episode and then we'll do other
- 3:38installments later. Yeah.
- 3:41And their entrances. Exits from those installments
- 3:44because like everything is so out of order, you know, we keep
- 3:51getting New Media, you know, the Kenobi show.
- 3:55Really throws a wrench in a lot of this.
- 3:56So you didn't know you had to be Stephen Hawking or Albert
- 4:00Einstein and like, figure out where, in the timeline we are,
- 4:05it's so true. So we overly complicated.
- 4:11Yeah, this is, this is Going to be funny.
- 4:13I think because we are going to talk about the first time we see
- 4:18the character in the original trilogy, the last time we see
- 4:21them and what our favorite is. All right, well who goes first?
- 4:25Well, let's see character-wise. Who do we see first?
- 4:29I think we see Luke first right out of everyone that we have in
- 4:31our list. No.
- 4:34Oh, you're right? Yes.
- 4:35No. You're right.
- 4:35No, it's not. It's course it's not loose.
- 4:39It is show up droids. Yeah, he doesn't show up for 30.
- 4:42Five minutes that's okay. Is when he does.
- 4:47Yeah you're right. It's the droids which we each
- 4:50have one of each so we could just do that together.
- 4:52I would say yes. Well their bumbling fools and
- 4:57mostly C-3PO which is the one that I have bless your heart.
- 5:01Yeah. Well, we first see him waving
- 5:04his hands and walking quickly and oh no we're too we must get
- 5:09out of here. You know, has faders just down
- 5:12the All way. So yeah, 33 pills just being
- 5:14threepio and you don't the best part about his entrance into the
- 5:19entire Saga. Let alone the original trilogy
- 5:21is that there's no mistaking, who the hell he is.
- 5:24He stays true, the entire way through.
- 5:27Yeah. Every iteration?
- 5:28Yep, even animated. So really the First characters
- 5:33we see are the droids. Yeah.
- 5:35And R2 is right next to him, being exactly how our to always
- 5:40is. Yes.
- 5:41And that's kind of how We see them the first time in each of
- 5:44the original movies, like the, it's a New Hope Empire Strikes
- 5:48Back. Return of the Jedi, we always
- 5:50see our two and three people walking down a corridor or in
- 5:55Return of the Jedi. They're heading to Jabba's
- 5:57Palace. Yeah bickering.
- 6:00Yeah. And that's why I love them.
- 6:05They've been around since the absolute dawn of Star Wars time
- 6:09when it's interesting to see them.
- 6:10Now that we know how important They are to Anakin.
- 6:13Yeah yeah and how they play such a role in his children's lives
- 6:19but yeah both of them for sure right up until the very end it's
- 6:24crazy. I've always said that R2 is a
- 6:26relic but three bureaus also, a relic he was built by Anakin and
- 6:32he makes it like all the way to the end and then some so, right
- 6:37and Beyond. And one we've said before that
- 6:40R2 is telling the story. The Skywalker story.
- 6:43Yeah, that was kind of like, one of the original ideas of the
- 6:46show or the show, the the universe.
- 6:49Well, yeah, that the show he hasn't had his memory wiped
- 6:54right? Which is why he's such a gem,
- 6:57that's why he's always bickering.
- 6:59He said to go through how many Skywalker's she many?
- 7:02Yeah, too many. Okay, so the last time we see
- 7:07them as again, they're together. They're in This Together shot
- 7:10together which is basically the last time we See everybody in
- 7:13the you know this is gonna be this is gonna be a common theme
- 7:17in this episode but the together on Endor right at the Ewok
- 7:23celebration where threepio has been playing a God and our to
- 7:28happen just done I just love so much.
- 7:35That threepio is kind of like the golden Crucible of the walks
- 7:41like it's like little. Do they know he's such a
- 7:45bumbling idiot? Yes he couldn't be more opposite
- 7:49of that title, which is why it's so cute make and when you see
- 7:54ever been respected that much not much not not for some time,
- 7:58not around Han Solo piano on some somebody shut him up.
- 8:02Oh man han was so mad. The threepio is getting treated
- 8:05so well yeah and they were tied two sticks ready to be spit
- 8:10roast. So It's great but they're there
- 8:16at the end, which is nice. Do you have a favorite entrance
- 8:19of threepio a favor and Trent's? I would say well my favorite
- 8:25threepio moment is when he has, it's not really an entrance.
- 8:31So I don't know if it counts is when he says that he was happy
- 8:36to be there. All along beside his friend.
- 8:38Are 200 is my favorite threepio moment.
- 8:42That's in Rises Skywalker, right?
- 8:44I think so. It's one of the sequels.
- 8:46Yeah. So sad and so it's like the one
- 8:49time we see him like super serious and heartfelt even you
- 8:53know as far as an entrance. I kind of like when chewy picks
- 9:00up all of his pieces in Empire Strikes Back and it just slings
- 9:04them over his back. Is that considered an entrance?
- 9:06Yeah, I think that counts. It's great.
- 9:12And our two favorite. I mean there's so many my God,
- 9:16honestly. I think one of my favorites is
- 9:18when he wakes back up. And what is that?
- 9:21Force awakens? Yeah.
- 9:24Because we're so used to him being there.
- 9:26So for him to not be there and then he comes back alive.
- 9:29I think that was, it made me feel hopeful, you know, it's
- 9:32like oh things could be okay because our choose awake.
- 9:36Yeah, right. The next character we see is
- 9:40Vader, right? Yeah.
- 9:42Yeah, and that is his. That's his main entrance of all
- 9:46time and I love it. So I have Vader his entrance.
- 9:50Is he walks through the smoke. Puts his hands on his belt and
- 9:54looks around like the fuck is this.
- 9:58This is all the better. You could do but, you know, like
- 10:03I can't. I just know under that helmet.
- 10:04He's looking around at his feet at all the dead Rebels and stuff
- 10:07and the dead Stormtroopers. Like fuck.
- 10:11None of these are who Wanted you know, like and we know what
- 10:15happens right before this scene. So he's oddly calm, but, you
- 10:20know, he's he's seething underneath there in his calm,
- 10:24like, I'll take care of this later.
- 10:26This is an atrocity, clean this up.
- 10:28Like, that's the first time we see him, he just, It's oddly
- 10:33appropriate, that he comes through the smoke and he's this.
- 10:37You hear the breathing? He's this imposing black figure
- 10:41in a white horse. Hallway.
- 10:42Yes really good. As far as like cinematically
- 10:45speaking to introduce probably one of the world's greatest
- 10:49villains in such a magnificent manner.
- 10:52He's the only thing you're staring at because he's all
- 10:55black in a sea of white, right? And the smoke is the added.
- 10:59Like if Vader could he would have had a fog machine
- 11:04everywhere. Like Beyonce, Beyonce has the
- 11:06fan Vader, has the smoke machine.
- 11:09Yeah, Vader's gonna smoke machine and its name in lights.
- 11:12It's behind him. Yes.
- 11:13Yes. Flashing, neon red lights.
- 11:18And that's when we first see him, shit.
- 11:20So compare that, to the last time we see him, well, it gets
- 11:24complicated because, of course, original trilogy.
- 11:28Only, it's still complicated because the last time we see
- 11:32him, I think it's when Luke takes his helmet off, and we see
- 11:36him. See him, right?
- 11:38And then he dies. But the last scene that we see
- 11:42him as Vader is on the pyre that Luke sex, right?
- 11:48But then that's not even clear because then we see Anakin has
- 11:53emerged from Vader as a force ghost.
- 11:57So all of this is the end of Return of the Jedi as we know.
- 12:00Yeah. But of course just like, Anakin
- 12:03nothing is simple. He had to do it extra and his
- 12:07and his exit was threefold. It's got is how I agree part
- 12:12exit. It is as it should be.
- 12:17That's interesting. And what you're saying about
- 12:20Vader is going to be interesting because it ties into Leia who is
- 12:25who is next? But uh but yes what's your
- 12:27favorite Vader? Entrance verbs before, 100%.
- 12:31No, no qualms. No hesitation Rogue one if there
- 12:37was ever a fucking Diva with a lightsaber.
- 12:40It's him. That is the entrance to beat all
- 12:43entrances. Yeah.
- 12:45Maybe maybe bested. Just a little bit by his son as
- 12:49we'll talk about, right? Vader's best entrance is by far
- 12:55the Rogue one hallway scene, completely agree.
- 12:58It's so dramatic. You have a is that your
- 13:00favorite? That would be.
- 13:01The only thing that's like a very close.
- 13:04Second is his appearance on My Puzo in the Kenobi series
- 13:08because that was very are very good terrifying and amazing.
- 13:12Yes. When he first shows up and he's
- 13:14walking, they just feet in the Cape is fluttering.
- 13:17Yeah, I love that heat. He stops like looks at 0 b 1 and
- 13:21I'm just like, yeah, so good. That was great.
- 13:25So good. So that's a close.
- 13:27Second to Rogue one. But Rogue one was so impactful,
- 13:30when I first thought I judge that based on the fact that it
- 13:33immediately made me cry like within seconds of that
- 13:36lightsaber igniting. Yeah, in the theater.
- 13:39I was I was already Balling. It has to stack up against that.
- 13:42I didn't ball at that point in Kenobi.
- 13:46I was just like jaw dropped, which is a pretty good second.
- 13:49Yeah. Yeah, pretty good.
- 13:50I was shaking but I wasn't as emotional as I was in Rogue one.
- 13:55So that's what broke one wins. Okay.
- 13:58So right after Vader coming down the hallway and the droids
- 14:03running through the ship's then we see Princess Leia.
- 14:07Yes. Iconic and her Shot is the
- 14:11opposite of Vader's where she's in a hall or side compartment.
- 14:17That's all dark. Yeah.
- 14:19And she's in the center with R2 and she and R2 are white in this
- 14:24sea of dark and they're even backlit by this white light that
- 14:27makes it look Angelic. And there's like these red
- 14:30lights in front of them to imply that the Empire circling them,
- 14:35you know, it's so good. It's so it is Iconic.
- 14:39It's The hood. Mmm and the first time we see
- 14:43Carrie Fisher's face so good and it's just for a second in that
- 14:47moment, you don't see her until she stands up from our to takes
- 14:50a quick look and then vanishes behind one of the partitions.
- 14:53The next time you see her, she's holding a blaster.
- 14:55You know, it's so good. She's awesome.
- 14:58It's so it's so different than how so many characters were
- 15:01portrayed at that time. Female Quavers.
- 15:04When you think about the juxtaposition between Vader and
- 15:07Leia like in sequence like that. Hmm.
- 15:10That's pretty. That's pretty good.
- 15:12It's pretty cool. And like, of course, it's, it
- 15:15could be as simple as just good versus evil, but the fact that
- 15:18it's father and daughter, oh, I know knowing what we know.
- 15:22Yeah, it's so much more interest to it.
- 15:25It's really cool. And then I get.
- 15:29So the last time we see Leia is again and Return of the Jedi
- 15:33where Luke is like off by himself and she goes up to him.
- 15:38Hugs him and brings him back. His family basically.
- 15:42Yeah, and I love that. Yeah, I love it too.
- 15:45And it's, you know, it's so representative of like, how Leia
- 15:49is that grounding Force for everybody?
- 15:52Yeah, and they know now that they're brother and sister
- 15:54twins. I don't know if you have this
- 15:56written down or if I'm stealing it from you.
- 15:58But she's all kind of wrapped up in her entrance and her hair's
- 16:03done up tight and you know, her signature buns.
- 16:06And then in Return of the Jedi, she's free flowing or hairs
- 16:09down, you're right. Right, you know, kind of natural
- 16:12and the greens and the Browns and stuff.
- 16:13And yeah, that's a really good point.
- 16:16And she gets there gradually like even throughout Return of
- 16:19the Jedi you know because like at the beginning she's she shows
- 16:24up in a bounty hunter costume and by the end she's like
- 16:27softened and but she's not. That's the thing I love about
- 16:31Leia is she can have like her hair down and be soft but also
- 16:35shoot you. No, she's not soft by any means.
- 16:39Don't miss Take her soft hair. Yeah, she's still a general so,
- 16:45oh yeah. All the way.
- 16:47So, I had like one of my favorite moments with her or her
- 16:50entrances when she comes up to Tarkin, and she says, she
- 16:53recognized his foul stench when she was brought on.
- 16:56Hope. It doesn't really get much
- 17:01better than that. Yeah, the only thing that comes
- 17:05close to me is when she blasts po across the room that Yeah.
- 17:10Well, yeah, I mean, even then she was softened because she was
- 17:14like, literally like healing. Yeah.
- 17:18And then she just gets out and shoot somebody.
- 17:20It's like, I'm still here bitch. Like yeah, at the children,
- 17:24misbehaving for fuck's sake, for fuck's sake, let me get out of
- 17:28bed, let me put my cape on, let me go figure out what's going on
- 17:32like, oh my God, her, I love her, I love her, I love her.
- 17:38What's one of your favorite entrances?
- 17:40My God. It's hard to pick.
- 17:43It would have to be. Oh, boy.
- 17:47How do I pick? It's a tie.
- 17:50It's a tie. When we first see her in force
- 17:53awakens. I was so Overjoyed to see her
- 17:57like mac on screen. Yeah.
- 18:00So that's like my personal. Okay.
- 18:03But like the best Leia, entrance, I think.
- 18:08Is probably when she's in her cell and Luke comes to.
- 18:12I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue and she's just laying
- 18:14there. Like aren't you a little short
- 18:16for a stormtrooper? Like if that isn't the best
- 18:19entrance of her character as I never going to get up?
- 18:23No, she's just like really so much like her father, I just
- 18:29yes, you know, like did wasn't Anakin in a cell and Obi-Wan
- 18:33finally shows up and he's like, what took you so long?
- 18:35Finally. Yeah.
- 18:37And then they died was in Clone Wars Baker the entire time
- 18:40after. Yeah, who lost it says, what
- 18:43we're talking about in last week's episode were?
- 18:44There it is. So I can't help but say that
- 18:47like the door sliding open to reveal a recently tortured,
- 18:52princess who still has her snark?
- 18:54I mean, that's that's lay in a nutshell, so yeah, yeah.
- 18:57Yeah. All right now it's time for
- 18:59Luke. I believe Luke.
- 19:01I have Luke which you said how many minutes into New Hope where
- 19:05we introduced to him a long time.
- 19:07It's at least, I would say 20 minutes before we see him.
- 19:12So we are introduced to Luke as the farm boy, the young farm
- 19:17boy, who was just trying to help his uncle.
- 19:19Kind of kind of disassociated with little bit of reality, is
- 19:24reality, you know, he doesn't know that the He's well taken
- 19:29care of in that respect. They kept him sheltered for a
- 19:32reason, but what a difference from his exit, you know, the
- 19:36hero's journey. Oh my gosh, he is one of the
- 19:39characters he transforms the most I would say or yeah.
- 19:43Maybe the most that, I everybody.
- 19:45Yeah, maybe. Besides anicut new quite
- 19:47literally, physically changes. But Luke starts to change like
- 19:52him. Also, yeah.
- 19:54I mean, we see it all the way through the original trilogy.
- 19:57In the first scene is see, at the kitchen table, or is he at
- 20:01is yet? Trying to get parts, I can't
- 20:03remember, he's coming up the stairs.
- 20:05Yeah, it's just inspect the droids with his uncle.
- 20:09Okay, I mean it's pretty basic. I love that scene, honestly.
- 20:13It's so innocent it is and I don't have another word for it.
- 20:18The first thing he does is listen to his aunt.
- 20:21Tell him to get some stuff for the house and he's like, yeah,
- 20:23yeah, I'll try. Yeah.
- 20:26And he's the Big Hero. Saves the Galaxy.
- 20:28Yeah. He's literally the stuff he does
- 20:31between just the beginning of that movie and the end of that
- 20:34movie, let alone the beginning of that original trilogy, and
- 20:38the end of the original track. And then we can talk about the
- 20:41whole, everything else that he's influence.
- 20:43But right. Luke is dead.
- 20:45I mean, we begin with an innocent sheltered individual
- 20:50who has this huge back story of why he's that way.
- 20:53And then he chooses to kind of shed.
- 20:57That and become what he ends up becoming.
- 21:00Yeah. So the last time we see him is
- 21:04opposite of Leia. He's, they're having a moment
- 21:08with his father, you know, these on the pyre.
- 21:10He's the Flames are there, which is also very symbolic, but he
- 21:14has a peaceful smile on his face.
- 21:16He's intense as the Flames were there, but he's content.
- 21:20Yeah. How this is all wrapped up, you
- 21:23know, he knows he had to go, he did the best he could.
- 21:27At PC knows Anakin's at peace, right?
- 21:29He redeemed his father basically and literally he's just burning
- 21:33the suit that his father was imprisoned in mmm.
- 21:37And then he sees the three Force ghosts appear and he has a
- 21:43smile, that kind of confirms what he suspected.
- 21:46Anyways, that he was at peace. And then his Obi-Wan and Yoda,
- 21:50and Anakin has young Jedi the last time he was a Jedi, so it's
- 21:55very peaceful. Yeah, he's so So beautiful and
- 21:57that scene, I love bodies. So Mark Hamill like when he's
- 22:01turning and walking like profile and then turns.
- 22:04Yeah. Oh my God.
- 22:05It just like, I could rewind it all the time.
- 22:08Yes, his jaw could cut glass, seriously.
- 22:14I love him but he goes through quite a transformation.
- 22:17And that's why the original trilogy is my favorite.
- 22:20It's because of Luke. Oh my God.
- 22:22I'm just realizing that's exactly what he does.
- 22:24The first time we see him, he turns and moves the Direction.
- 22:28Oh he walks up the stairs with his head down, he turns to the
- 22:32his left and walks, oh my God, that's crazy.
- 22:35And so the only one that would notice that I would never notice
- 22:38it. It's just cuz I watched it six
- 22:41million times. So I haven't memorized.
- 22:43But that's so cool to see that. He's still the same person.
- 22:47Yeah like inside. He's like there's that beautiful
- 22:51parallel but he is completely grown and had his mind expended
- 22:57Oh, very how do you pick a vest? Oh, I know how.
- 23:02I know how Skywalker's and hallways go together.
- 23:06Like I don't know what they go together like but they go
- 23:11together perfectly my favorite. Luke entrance is in the
- 23:17Mandalorian the season finale. Were Luke returns to screen, so
- 23:22to speak and pulls a little bit of an attic, and in that
- 23:26hallway. But much different, he's mowing
- 23:31down and kicking ass taking names.
- 23:33Taking heads off a droids at that's an entrance Force.
- 23:37Crushing droids Force crushing and throwing I can't.
- 23:42It's so good. That's my favorite.
- 23:44Luke entrance ever. Yeah, although there's so many
- 23:47to choose from. There are many damn.
- 23:49There are. There's like I even love when he
- 23:53says I'm Luke Skywalker. I'm here to rescue you.
- 23:55Yeah. Well so when is it up?
- 23:57The helmet off. Yeah.
- 23:58Perfect hair. It's insane.
- 24:01He's so hopeful like I'm here. I'm gonna rescue.
- 24:03You has no idea. He thought that was it.
- 24:05That was the end of that so it's gonna get worse.
- 24:08Dear. Yeah I do and I also love his
- 24:10entrance to Jabba's Palace where because we haven't seen him
- 24:13since he's been injured. You know he got his hand cut off
- 24:16and then the like the doors open and he comes in as a silhouette
- 24:20which is super Vader e. It's so great though.
- 24:23Cape whooshing. Yeah.
- 24:25And it chokes the gumbo Lori had switched is the problem that's
- 24:29morally questionable but he doesn't kill them, right?
- 24:34He just puts them to sleep. Oh, yeah.
- 24:36No, no. Yeah, that's all, that's all.
- 24:39Yeah, I tell myself right? Right, there's no gurgling
- 24:43sounds coming from throats at all, but whatever.
- 24:47He's just trying to figure it out.
- 24:49He's new to it. Yeah, one of my favorite, Luke
- 24:53entrances is when he's at the medal ceremony.
- 24:56Oh my God. Yes, I so adorable.
- 24:59He's so adorable. I love it.
- 25:01I do too. He's, so it's Mark Hamill.
- 25:04Okay, if it was any other actor that like, innocent Joy.
- 25:09It's just like pure joy. It's because he was loving.
- 25:12He just loves what he does. You know.
- 25:14Yeah, he's a super nerd and he loves this kind of stuff and it
- 25:18just shows that his face. It wouldn't have been the same
- 25:21with anybody else. All right so who's next Obi-Wan
- 25:26II have 0, b 1. And I just have to start by
- 25:30saying that krayt dragon sound effect has gotten worse over the
- 25:36years. I hate the one they have on
- 25:42there right now of him going. Whoa.
- 25:45Like I just can't picture ob1 making that sound.
- 25:50It's just so upsetting I'm not. Okay.
- 25:56With it. I liked it far more back in the
- 25:59day when it sounded more like an animal true.
- 26:03Granted, when I was a kid, I didn't realize 0 b, 1 was the
- 26:06one who made this sound, so I get it there and to make it
- 26:09sound more like a person made up, I'm not okay, or whatever.
- 26:12It's terrible. But you're, it's the same as the
- 26:15no, oh God, the COS terrible physical pain when I say.
- 26:20Absolutely. But so the first time we see
- 26:24Obi-Wan Kenobi is, In the jungle and wastes.
- 26:28When Luke has been attacked by sand people, he appears hobbling
- 26:33over the desert new cloak, you can't see his face.
- 26:37He's just this hooded cloaked figure, and he kneels down and
- 26:41places his hands over Luke's forehead, and then turns,
- 26:45because he hears our to takes the hood off and says hello
- 26:47there and makes cinematic history.
- 26:51Complete cinematic, history of didn't know it at the time.
- 26:55Yeah. But, but here we are.
- 26:58Well, I was watching this. It was kind of it occurred to me
- 27:01that he sing. Hello there.
- 27:02And then he says to our to come here, my little friend, don't be
- 27:05afraid and he's like talking to the audience.
- 27:09Oh yeah, I guess he's speaking right to us.
- 27:12He's inviting us to the adventure.
- 27:15And this whole scene is a really important part of the hero's
- 27:19journey. It's, there's always a spot
- 27:23where the hero is minding his own business going to about his
- 27:26life. And he bumps into a wise old man
- 27:30who offers him A New Path and it leads to the first refusal or
- 27:36the call refused. That's exactly what happens
- 27:39here. And it's an actually it's a
- 27:41really important step in Luke's Journey as a whole, of course,
- 27:46it's op1 course. It is, it has to be.
- 27:50We all know, there's so much more back story to this.
- 27:54Yeah, it's so much More impactful than ever.
- 27:58It's just another iconic Star Wars seen.
- 28:00A lot of his moments are really iconic and really plot driving
- 28:06so to speak. Like all we want doesn't show up
- 28:09that much in the original trilogy, but when he does, it
- 28:12always like really pushes forward.
- 28:14One of the characters plots mostly Luke but also Leia in a
- 28:17sense. So the last time we see him
- 28:19alive is on, is in a New Hope at the end when he's fighting Vader
- 28:24and he sees Luke. And then he holds the saber up
- 28:27and Vader kills and he disappears, but do that scene
- 28:30has so much more meaning because of the community series.
- 28:34Oh, so much more and when much more you Celia run into the
- 28:39room. And she kind of like stops.
- 28:40And looks at only one? Yeah.
- 28:43Okay, it's a whole new. It's a whole new world, but it's
- 28:48like, fucking insane. And I forgot to mention in the
- 28:51last, when Vader's alive scene, we get that cut It on his
- 28:56fucking head. Oh yeah.
- 28:58And that's from the Kenobi series to now, like, all of
- 29:02these things, like layer running in and seeing OB want any Smiles
- 29:06at both of them like his journey is done.
- 29:09Yeah. Well, if you want to count the
- 29:11last time we see him, as in the whole original trilogy, he's a
- 29:15force ghost at the end of Return of the Jedi with Anakin and Yoda
- 29:20standing there. Looking at Luke like mission
- 29:23accomplished, although I will say Shouldn't Qui gonn be there
- 29:27now? Yes, Dad.
- 29:30Qui-Gon in. I was gonna say, are they get a
- 29:31Photoshop him in later? No.
- 29:34No. Maybe Qui-Gon said, you know,
- 29:36I'm going to skip this one because of everything that
- 29:40Anakin did. I don't want to hang out with
- 29:42Obi-Wan. No I'm just I'm cool.
- 29:46I'll just hang out over here. Let you three have your moment.
- 29:52I'll speak to the boy afterwards.
- 29:54Go over a few things. We have things to discuss.
- 29:57Yeah, yeah. They have a little bit of
- 30:00catching up to do. Yeah.
- 30:02Well, a favorite entrance for him is very difficult because
- 30:06every entrance with Obi-Wan is dramatic and every entrance is
- 30:11golden, I do like the cloak drops, you know, when he just oh
- 30:18I know, they've promised yeah, the cape.
- 30:21Top is. Yeah, it's good but I do.
- 30:24I also really like in the lawless when he comes into the
- 30:27cell with Satine and says I do my own bidding, I really like
- 30:31that. Also, I was going to say the
- 30:33same episode when he the doors open and he's facing the war
- 30:38that's beyond. Oh yeah.
- 30:41It could be considered an exit. That's true.
- 30:44It's also an entrance. It's a threshold, he's a threat.
- 30:47Thank you. Yes.
- 30:48It could be either depending on how you look at it.
- 30:51It's so dramatic, we could spend a whole episode and maybe we
- 30:54will on just Obi-Wan and entrances and exits.
- 30:58Because seriously, because he has any, he has many.
- 31:02Yeah. There's a lot as first-line
- 31:06chronologically in The Phantom Menace In The Phantom.
- 31:09Menace has I have a bad feeling about this which I have always,
- 31:13he's a fucking Padawan and he's not even talking about.
- 31:17Because Qui gonn says like, keep your mind in the here and now
- 31:20he's not sensing now. Obi-Wan is sensing the Galaxy at
- 31:23large is not at rest. Like there's something weird and
- 31:26wrong going on, he sensing his life, he's sensing everything
- 31:32that's about to happen to him over the next like 60 years.
- 31:36He's sensing everything that's going to happen after.
- 31:40He's a force goes, he's the man, never escaping, never escaping
- 31:46that. He has a bad feeling about all
- 31:48of this. The irony, but so good and so
- 31:54sad, I think Obi-Wan's entrances and exits in the original
- 31:59trilogy might be the most crucial.
- 32:01They are because they're there are few and far between, but
- 32:04each one, like I said, is poignant.
- 32:07Yes. Like I said, basically, every
- 32:09time they change this scene, it's moving Luke further and
- 32:12further down the path towards the hero, you know.
- 32:16Yeah. And away from his life as a farm
- 32:18boy, which leads us into hon, guess who Ooh, I don't have you
- 32:22have, I have that. Did you say your favorite ob1?
- 32:25Well, there's too many. Yeah, I mean, my favorite is his
- 32:31a r is his first appearance because it's like fucking
- 32:34iconic. Oh, so that was your okay.
- 32:37Yeah, I mean I didn't specifically say, but I mean to
- 32:40go through them all would be too tedious.
- 32:42So I'll just go with his very first hello there because it's
- 32:46the hello there, that launches a thousand.
- 32:48Hello. There's So this is always that
- 32:53launched a thousand ships. Yes, you got it.
- 32:59Oh my God, I love it. So yes hon.
- 33:03Dear han han and by default Chuy's since they're always
- 33:07together. Yes.
- 33:08Yes. Can't have one without the
- 33:10other. No.
- 33:11The first time you see, hon. He's sliding into his seat in
- 33:14the MOs Eisley Cantina. And so cool.
- 33:19Yeah. He's super Suave.
- 33:21But that's what I like about the scene.
- 33:23Because to start, he's super, arrogant, he's really Suave even
- 33:27kind of like verbally spars with Luke little bit.
- 33:29No big ones like that. I got this.
- 33:35I know how to handle a Skywalker.
- 33:36Stay out of it. Yeah.
- 33:37Yeah, exactly. I've dealt with Hondo ohnaka.
- 33:40I can deal with Han Solo. So as soon as they're gone
- 33:44though, hon, flips and he's like, wow, this could really
- 33:47save my neck. So it gives us a sense right
- 33:51away. That he's a bit of a scoundrel.
- 33:53He's playing a bit of a scam. He's all obviously going to be
- 33:57the comedic relief. Yes, but also, he has his own
- 34:03journey to heroism, he does. Yeah.
- 34:06And it's pretty cool to see that because I just have to say that
- 34:10in Empire Strikes Back. The first time we see him, he
- 34:13starts by having a fight with Chewy and goes into having a
- 34:17fight with Leia right away. Yes, no, he's not at peace.
- 34:21He's no, he's oh my God. Well, yes, he's fighting with
- 34:27himself to because he wants to leave but he doesn't want to
- 34:30leave and yeah, you know. So to have his beginning be so
- 34:36he's got his guard up all the time and he's kind of like,
- 34:39making fun of people. It doesn't want to let people in
- 34:42to close and then his last scene is literally him hugging Luke
- 34:46and then hugging Leia. Yeah, I know.
- 34:49And to have that character have that found family, you know.
- 34:54Yeah. Which it is cherishes.
- 34:58Yeah. Truly by the end.
- 34:59He cherishes both of them, all of them.
- 35:03Yes yes. And for him to kind of realize
- 35:06that Luke isn't a child and actually is a character with
- 35:11power which we then see in force awakens when he says like it's
- 35:15true all of it, you know. Oh my yeah because he was really
- 35:19skeptical of it obviously at the beginning he says it's hokey
- 35:22religions you know so it's cool to see See how his character
- 35:26transforms even in just the original trilogy.
- 35:29Hmm. And again, too many good
- 35:31entrances to 0, so many favorite.
- 35:34So many, I do like the situation normal.
- 35:39Oh, fuck. That's yeah.
- 35:41It's kind of an entrance, but my insurance is when he slides in
- 35:46and shoots and then shrugs that's like my favorite.
- 35:48Yes. Like original trilogy entrance.
- 35:51You know, I didn't you could kind of come out.
- 35:53This is an entrance when he falls into the trash.
- 35:55Factor. He says an incredible smell.
- 36:00You've discovered. It's a good one too.
- 36:04That's a good one. Yeah, I don't know.
- 36:07I'm but of course Chewie we're home classic.
- 36:10That's without a doubt. Yeah, that was on my list and I
- 36:14mean, not to bring it down, but in Rise of Skywalker, when Ben
- 36:20solo is standing there and he turns and there's Hans.
- 36:24Yes. All right.
- 36:25Hello son. You know, that really gets to me
- 36:28every time. Yeah, yeah, that one immediate
- 36:31tears. Yes.
- 36:33I actually perhaps it's unconscious bias but I thought
- 36:38when Ben solo turned Anakin was going to be there to tell him
- 36:41you can't do this and make the mistakes I made.
- 36:44But said it was hot, which is just it's perfect.
- 36:48But I was always waiting for, like the moment where the
- 36:51grandfather was going to have to have a talk with the grandson
- 36:53and say you can't make the mistakes.
- 36:55Rest of us made, you know, but instead it was much better in
- 36:58the fact that Han was there, when Ben needed a most and he
- 37:02did the, I love you. I know.
- 37:04Mmm, you know, well, Ben wanted to say, I love you and Han said
- 37:08I know which is right. Just fabulous.
- 37:11Fabulous, hot is one of the greatest characters.
- 37:15Yeah, I agree. His has a very satisfying Arc.
- 37:19Well, the the next one I have is Lando, which fabulous is as
- 37:24fabulous? Does he?
- 37:25Enters a bit of a scoundrel. You don't really know his where,
- 37:30his allegiances, he's a little over the top with Leo.
- 37:33He's a little over the top with hon, you know, smooth-talking
- 37:38gambling. We don't know where this is
- 37:40going, but his outfit is great. Oh my God, the cloak, The Cape,
- 37:45the Glorious, the blue, the the Disco boots, everything about it
- 37:51is fabulous. They are disco boots.
- 37:55There are Goats and the pants the flared pants.
- 37:57I love it. The whole thing is so retro,
- 38:00amazing, but he stays that way all the way through, rise of
- 38:04Skywalker, he's got the cape, he's got the colors, it's got
- 38:07everything, but the last time we see him, you can tell also that
- 38:10he has gone from kind of a superficial in it for himself to
- 38:14for the greater good, because he has fought now for the
- 38:16Rebellion, aided in the destruction of the second death
- 38:20star, loves his Newfound family and you can see it in their hug
- 38:24and when he's there with them at the end, And and, and, or and
- 38:27everything that happens in between he rectifies his first
- 38:30mistake right away and makes up for it tenfold.
- 38:34By the end. Yeah, totally.
- 38:35I love Lando. I love his first appearance.
- 38:38Yeah, that's great. That's the appearance for me.
- 38:41Of course we see him again in future installments.
- 38:45But you can't top his first appearance.
- 38:48It's like Obi-Wan to me the yeah.
- 38:49Kate that launched a thousand capes.
- 38:55I'm gonna keep saying it for everyone that so happiness up
- 38:58good. I also like that it calls Hannah
- 39:01loser. Yes, it's so funny.
- 39:04Yes. Yeah.
- 39:05There's no mistaking that those two have a past, which is great.
- 39:07I mean, if your aunt, if you're introducing a new character in
- 39:10the second of three films, this is the way to do it.
- 39:13You get a feel for him right away.
- 39:15Yes he's great he's a great character.
- 39:18So you have the emperor I do which what the fuck did you do
- 39:22for this? Because this motherfucker comes
- 39:25in and Doubt non-stop. Original trilogy, prequels
- 39:30sequel. Clone Wars Rebels everything.
- 39:34Everything else. Yeah.
- 39:37And his appearances have changed to, since they keep gas, leasing
- 39:40the film's. He had his first appearance in
- 39:43the original trilogy is in Empire Strikes Back.
- 39:46He's in a hologram talking to Vader.
- 39:48Yeah. And is the original hologram is
- 39:50I think scarier than anything because he's like, yeah, weird.
- 39:55And Finn. Yeah, and like his eyes are
- 39:58weird. Shapes eyes are weird.
- 40:00Yeah. Which they've now replaced with
- 40:02Ian's performance, which is great, but they also change the
- 40:05dialogue. I double-checked it because I
- 40:08knew it was different. The emperor knew it was Luke
- 40:12Skywalker in the original version back in the 80s.
- 40:15And in this version, it kind of doesn't make sense anymore.
- 40:19How they've changed it? Because the emperor says he is
- 40:21The Offspring of Anakin Skywalker and Vader says, how
- 40:25can that be? True.
- 40:26But we know that Vader knew that it was Luke long before the
- 40:31emperor did true. There's a comic book where Boba
- 40:35Fett tells him and then there's the, a certain point of view
- 40:39short story that we talked about in one of our episodes, for the
- 40:42emperor's like, oh Vader knew about this.
- 40:45Yeah, how long did he know about this and well, the question is,
- 40:49is, did he think Padme died with the the child unborn?
- 40:54That's what I always took. Took it as yeah I guess.
- 40:58But then we have all these other pieces of media that kind of
- 41:01Point. Yeah, like originally it made
- 41:04sense but now that they've added all this other stuff, it kind of
- 41:07like makes sent line a little you know, denial is a thing.
- 41:11It's true. Yeah, it's true.
- 41:14Because How would, how would Vader live with that one?
- 41:17He shoved all that out of. Yeah.
- 41:21So you know, it's it's possible but you're right though, So they
- 41:26basically have a conversation where they just decide that
- 41:28they're either going to turn Luke or kill him.
- 41:31And that's the first time we said the emperor and then the
- 41:34last time we see him, he is literally torturing Luke to
- 41:37death until Vader, picks him up and throws him down a reactor
- 41:40shaft. Yes, and I love it.
- 41:42That is the best exit ever. Yeah, it just - that no party
- 41:47out - no - that the that exit is befit for the emperor himself
- 41:54Palpatine, had to go. Down that way.
- 41:57Yeah, it's good. Picking a favor is difficult for
- 42:02him because I hate him and he doesn't do much but I will say
- 42:06that I like when his little chair turns like solely because
- 42:15I can go with that one. Well Ian said, the chair was
- 42:17supposed to be radio controlled and it was broken so he did use
- 42:21his feet, little fetal Feats to do it.
- 42:26And for him. I like that.
- 42:29Yes, yes. And finally, I have Yoda he has
- 42:32going to say we only have one left now.
- 42:34Well Yoda is kind of Yoda's another hard one because he
- 42:39shows up so often. Yeah.
- 42:41But if we're talking just the original trilogy, his entrance
- 42:45is fantastic because he's an old senile Yoda who probably wants
- 42:52to just ignore the fact that a Skywalker has shown up.
- 42:55His front door and he talks in riddles and he whacks R2 and he
- 43:02get doesn't give a straight answer for shit.
- 43:05Yeah. So we see him, you know, and day
- 43:07go by in his little, his little place where he's been hiding for
- 43:11decades and slimy mudhole. Yeah.
- 43:15And so, we're introduced to him as kind of a senile.
- 43:19How could this be the warrior that?
- 43:22Yeah, Jedi Master Warrior that Luke is looking.
- 43:25Are, you know? So they play up a little bit of
- 43:27his seasonality. I think, you know, is goofiness.
- 43:30And yeah, his speech dialect is the first time we're introduced
- 43:35to how he talks, literally, how he phrases his words.
- 43:39The wording. Yeah.
- 43:41Which has become iconic. And then the last time we see
- 43:44him is right back. Well, when he's alive is right
- 43:47back in there and he is dead. He's old, he's dying.
- 43:51He's trying to tell Luke about there's a second meaning Leia.
- 43:55Shh. We think a lot of people
- 43:57theorize that it could have been re I still think it's Leia.
- 44:00Yeah, I think it was. There's another is Leia.
- 44:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 44:04It's meant to be last. So Yoda didn't know about Ray,
- 44:09but he did know that they existed.
- 44:11Yeah, so I mean, semantics aside, it's Leia, and he dies
- 44:16and he disappears is little blanket fault.
- 44:20Yes, and it's so sad and Luke has a tear and his face half is
- 44:24a light and half. In the dark.
- 44:26And yeah, he still has to make that choice yet.
- 44:28So, yeah, because they weren't sure they were.
- 44:31There was Mark Hamill has said, how cool would the ending be if
- 44:35he took Vader's helmet and put it on himself at the like
- 44:38bitches? Yeah.
- 44:43Yeah. So there's that.
- 44:46Yeah. But he comes full circle in and
- 44:50of course then we get his Force ghost at the end.
- 44:52That's when we last see him, see him.
- 44:54But man, I got a favorite Yoda moment ever.
- 44:59I would have left the same as mine, it's when it's in the
- 45:03Revenge of the Sith. Yeah, I walks in and just Downs
- 45:07the two guards, closes the door and hasn't he.
- 45:11He's just like over it and it's the funniest moment in Star Wars
- 45:15maybe where he just it's like almost the equivalent of a bitch
- 45:19slap it's so funny. Bitch slap it's Yoda's bitch
- 45:23slap that's the perfect. You to categorize that and it's
- 45:27Yoda's, best entrance. It's really epic like the taxes
- 45:31that they wanted to do that. Like George Lucas who knows to
- 45:34do that is so funny. It's it's a boss move, it really
- 45:39is. Oh my god, of course, we have
- 45:41the same moment. Of course we do.
- 45:43Because I base Tides. I can't pick another.
- 45:47It's too good. I mean, the only other one that
- 45:50for me is just when you first see him because it's so goofy.
- 45:53It's so goofy. It's That it's they have the bad
- 45:57lip syncing song videos out of him like backing are too, and
- 46:02that's one of my favorites seagulls coming up at now.
- 46:06Yes, yeah. So many of these characters
- 46:12entrances in the original trilogy have become so fucking
- 46:15iconic throughout a cinematic history and pop culture in
- 46:19general. Yeah, it really puts it in
- 46:21perspective, right? It's not just Star Wars, It's
- 46:24movies in general. These are pretty iconic.
- 46:26You're right, 100%. Yeah.
- 46:28Way to go. George?
- 46:30Lucas one of your many successes.
- 46:34Yes, just a few our question for you this week.
- 46:45What is your favorite entrance or exit could be an exit from
- 46:50the original trilogy? You can pick any character any
- 46:53moment just to let us know. What is your favorite?
- 46:57Join us here next week. We are going to review the novel
- 47:02Rebel Rising, which is ginner, so's not a backstory, but kind
- 47:07of after wrote after her childhood scenes in Rogue one,
- 47:12what happens to her and how does it lead into Rogue one?
- 47:15And so both Lauren and I have finished reading it and we're
- 47:18going to discuss it and maybe a little bit of the Rogue one
- 47:20novelization as well. This is Lauren has read it and
- 47:23we're just going to relive some of our favorite characters from
- 47:26from Rogue one. That one is Jenner.
- 47:28So and a few others that are mentioned in the book, so it's
- 47:32spoiler heavy. So if you haven't read it, maybe
- 47:34next week's episode is not for you.
- 47:36But if you're interested, we will be going over that novel.
- 47:39It was amazing. It was very good.
- 47:40Yeah, I'm excited to talk about it.
- 47:43Last week we discussed Hondo ohnaka and we ask people what
- 47:46their favorite moment was with Honda and our friend, Kevin sent
- 47:51me this quote, Oh the stories I could tell so many of them,
- 47:55true. Such a Hondo close.
- 47:59It's such a Honda good and it's from Rebels.
- 48:02He said that he watched Rebels before he watched Clone Wars.
- 48:04So that was his first introduction to Hondo and
- 48:07honestly you can't go wrong with Hondo no matter how you get
- 48:11introduced to him. So you want to talk about an
- 48:13entrance and an exit you've got him with on do that.
- 48:16Man never fails on an entrance. So true.
