Transcript
- 0:16Dang I actually had a really good intro and I
- 0:18forgot what I was gonna say damn it Well, this
- 0:21is Banter with the boys, Gridiron Updates. We're
- 0:23back. It's still Rob. It's still Jake. It's still
- 0:27preseason. It's still preseason. Kev's still
- 0:30freaking sitting here. Yerp. By the way, every
- 0:34time you do that, I just hear you going, yerp,
- 0:36in my noggin here. Yeah, so we've been, yeah,
- 0:41what are we talking about? The Cardinals. They're
- 0:43crap. The NFC West. Are the Cardinals going to
- 0:47be the worst team in the NFL this year? I think
- 0:52the lowest number of wins we've given anybody
- 0:55was five, and I think it was me, and I forget
- 0:57who it was. It's either going to be the Cardinals
- 0:59or, yeah, I think it was the Cardinals. Cardinals,
- 1:04worst team in the NFL this year. I mean, they
- 1:06have to play the AFC West, too. That's what I
- 1:08mean. Their schedule is very daunting in their
- 1:11own division. Yeah, they're going to struggle
- 1:14this year. If they get above five, I'll call
- 1:16it a W this year. Another running back we're
- 1:19hoping does not get ran into the ground completely.
- 1:22I do like a little Jeremiah Love, though. You
- 1:26love some love? I think he's got the skill set
- 1:29to be a decent NFL running back. Health is one
- 1:34of those things with him that might linger in.
- 1:38Was he hurt a little bit in Notre Dame periodically?
- 1:42I don't remember who he was, but I felt like
- 1:45he was. Who's their quarterback? I think they're
- 1:48just positioning. Jacoby Brissett. I know, but
- 1:50next year. You're not on Jacoby Brissett train?
- 1:54I mean, I think he's all right as a suitable
- 1:56wait until next year when we draft a quarterback.
- 1:59Yeah, he's a gap year QB. Tank for Arch. We're
- 2:03all not big on. I don't think anybody wants to
- 2:06tank for Arch. Does Carson Beck start for the
- 2:08Cardinals by the end of the season? You can see
- 2:11it, you know, but I like Harrison Jr., Michael
- 2:15Wilson on the outside. I think he's their number
- 2:18one, actually. He kind of blew up last year.
- 2:22He plays better. Well, he catches the ball, too.
- 2:25Yeah, and then you've got probably, arguably,
- 2:27the best tight end in true. And then Mike LaFerre,
- 2:31they've got a new coach. This year is going to
- 2:36be tough. I'd do with Trey McBride, one of the
- 2:38best tight ends, if not the best tight ends.
- 2:40So they got a lot of weapons, but do they have
- 2:44enough to compete with the rest of their division
- 2:46and the AFC West to be significant in the standings
- 2:53this year? No. I'm out. Yeah, and then the other
- 2:57NFC teams they play are like the likes of Detroit,
- 3:00Dallas. Other than the West teams, it's just
- 3:04a tough, tough schedule for them. I don't think
- 3:06it's going to go well at all. I think 3 -14 last
- 3:09year, it could be worse. It could be 2 -15. I
- 3:12mean, it's not going to be good for them this
- 3:16year. And I kind of like the Cardinals, like
- 3:17we were talking. But they're in rough shape.
- 3:21They do have some pieces. You know, big Trey
- 3:23McBride guy. Like you said, probably the best
- 3:26tight end in the league. And unfortunately, he's
- 3:28stuck here in Arizona for a little bit longer.
- 3:32They could win a couple of those late games,
- 3:35Jets, Saints, Vegas, but rough season, rough
- 3:40go of it for Arizona. Good luck. But post -Kyler
- 3:45Murray, obviously that cloud has kind of been
- 3:47hanging over them for a few years. Still paying
- 3:50them, though. But at least he's out of the building.
- 3:54If he ended up becoming this negative energy
- 3:57to the organization, which it definitely felt
- 3:59like that last year, maybe two, now he's gone.
- 4:02So now it's kind of like... Maybe there's some
- 4:04fresh air there. I don't know. Fresh enough to
- 4:08go to... You're trying to make it not as doom
- 4:11and gloom as it was going to be. Sorry. I really
- 4:15questioned and still do the Jeremiah Love pick
- 4:20in general. Their backfield was already crowded.
- 4:25and now you're adding an additional running back.
- 4:27Now, I understand that he's a very dynamic player,
- 4:30but that team had a lot of needs, and running
- 4:36back wasn't really a need. Fair. So I felt like
- 4:40they were like, oh, what's best player available
- 4:42right now? We're just going to take that regardless
- 4:44of what it was versus, man, we got a lot of work
- 4:46to do. Where would you have started? Would you
- 4:52have taken a chance on one of these other quarterbacks?
- 4:55I don't know. Rather than Jeremiah Love? No,
- 4:57I maybe would have seen. I'm a proponent. With
- 5:02as many needs as they had, maybe you're probably
- 5:04looking at seeing about trading out. Acquire
- 5:07a couple more draft picks and start looking at,
- 5:09well, we need to retool our offensive line. We
- 5:12need to retool our defensive line. There's no
- 5:15way they didn't get calls. You're curious kind
- 5:17of like what those offers maybe were, knowing
- 5:20that Jeremiah Love was on the board and multiple
- 5:22teams did want him. The pick felt off to me,
- 5:28and it still does. Again, not to say that he's
- 5:34not a bad player. He's a really great player.
- 5:35I think he's just going to be on the wrong team
- 5:39for him, unfortunately. And for running backs
- 5:43with short careers that they usually do, he's
- 5:48unfortunately probably going to lose half of
- 5:50his career to being potentially on a poor to
- 5:53mediocre team unless they can kind of turn some
- 5:57other stuff around over the next two. Yeah, the
- 6:01schedule, I love the skill players. Everything
- 6:06else just is off about it, and I don't see any
- 6:09progress. Three wins seems like their sweet spot.
- 6:14All right, to add to your word, they kind of
- 6:16draft. I'm just kind of looking at the draft
- 6:18afterwards. I mean, they're not going to take
- 6:20takes, so they're not going to receive anything
- 6:22really offense, maybe offensive line. So then
- 6:24you would add Reese, Delane, the cornerback the
- 6:28Chiefs end up taking, Sonny Stiles. and then
- 6:32receiver and then offensive line. So maybe they
- 6:35just loved Love more than those guys. Or they
- 6:37should have traded down. But that's just kind
- 6:41of who was after would have been available for
- 6:46Love. It'll be interesting how that turns out.
- 6:48I agree that the running back room is full. They
- 6:51drafted a running back last year in the second
- 6:54round. But he got hurt in preseason. I'm trying
- 6:58to think of his name. Tip of my head, I should
- 7:01know. Bam? No, because their room right now is
- 7:08Jeremiah Love, Tyler Algier, which they signed
- 7:12from the Falcons, James Conner, and then Bam
- 7:16Knight. And I think James Conner, he's currently
- 7:20on IR with a return designation. Okay, gotcha.
- 7:23So maybe it's not too crowded right now, but
- 7:27it's going to get crowded. Where are we going
- 7:34next? 49ers. 14 Niners. Lost Robert Sala. We'll
- 7:39just say that to start off. Robert. Key loss
- 7:42is Robert Sala. Robert. And Ricky Pearsall. I'm
- 7:49just going to go right off the bat and say the
- 7:51Niners are going to drop two wins this year.
- 7:54They're going to end up being 10 -7. That is
- 7:57off the cliff. I think the Right, it kind of
- 8:02is a little bit. Put a little flag next to this,
- 8:05Kevin, so I can remind her to put a reel on this.
- 8:08Ten and seven. Let's go. Yeah, I think their
- 8:11biggest concern is trying to just stay healthy
- 8:13throughout a whole season at this point. You
- 8:15mean that electrical substation? Well, we could
- 8:19talk about that, too. But, no, just in general.
- 8:22You know, their big playmakers are aging as well.
- 8:26How are they going to do with the 17 -game season
- 8:30at this point? You know, Brock Purdy himself
- 8:32has had some injury stuff. Let's see him play
- 8:36this season out. I'm just thinking they're dropping
- 8:4010 -5. Unfortunately, this year. Just off the
- 8:44cliff. A little bit. Right into the golden gates.
- 8:47They're not winning the division with that either.
- 8:49No. I think it's just going to be a really tough
- 8:52division. I mean, the games against Seattle and
- 8:54the Rams specifically, obviously, just who knows?
- 8:58Yeah. Who knows? Fire away, Jake. Give me your
- 9:02thoughts. Yes. Super, super tough division. Unfortunate
- 9:07for the 49ers. I really like. Mike Evans and
- 9:13Debo both very different wide receivers to bring
- 9:17in really to offset kind of losing Jawan Jennings,
- 9:22Ricky Pearsall poor Ricky yeah older but I think
- 9:29they're still going to be able to get it done
- 9:30I mean jokingly but also seriously it's really
- 9:35about the injuries I don't know if that electrical
- 9:38substation thing is just tinfoil hat kind of
- 9:41stuff or not, but I think there's enough people
- 9:44believing it. Depends on the documents you read.
- 9:46I think that there's enough people out there
- 9:48believing it that there's some kind of psyche
- 9:51thing going on in players' and fans' heads about
- 9:55it. Back to candlestick they go. Yeah, someone's
- 9:59got to move, and I don't think it's the substation.
- 10:01Yeah, buddy. I think they're able to... They
- 10:07may be able to stay put at 12 wins. There's not
- 10:11a lot of change positively. 12 is their ceiling.
- 10:1610 to 12 is probably where they land. They have
- 10:19a couple of interesting games to open. They open
- 10:21against the Rams. That's tough. But then it's
- 10:23Miami, Arizona. We presume those are two wins
- 10:25for San Francisco. And then probably toughies
- 10:28against Denver, Seattle, Washington, Atlanta.
- 10:32So, interesting way to open the season. What
- 10:34do you got, Robert? I mean, the offense revolves
- 10:37around McCaffrey. His ability, he's still one
- 10:41of the elite talents on the football field. But
- 10:47the interesting combination with Evans coming
- 10:49in now and back, Debo's back. Are they going
- 10:53to get enough out of Evans to fill in? Who's
- 10:55going to be that deep threat? I know they did
- 10:57sign Kristen Kurt, probably stretch the field
- 10:59a little bit, but he's the underneath guy. Brock,
- 11:03I still can get the job done. They're in a really
- 11:06tough division, and also they're playing AFC
- 11:08West. I think they're going to fall a little
- 11:12bit, but they have so much talent on the offensive
- 11:16side. If McCaffrey's on the field defensively,
- 11:19I think they've also gotten a little bit. I think
- 11:22the defense is going to be there. their struggle
- 11:25point this year. I think the offense will be
- 11:27able to keep up in some games, but their defense
- 11:29won't be the same. I think they got a little
- 11:32older. They lost a couple people. They added
- 11:35a few, but I mean, I don't know if it's going
- 11:38to be enough. So I'm going probably 500 for them.
- 11:44I could see them maybe nine wins, but tough division,
- 11:48tough schedule. After all the crap he was giving
- 11:51me for giving them 10 wins. I gave you crap for
- 11:54ten. Yeah, for sure. I was like, dang, you must
- 11:59be thinking 13, 14 wins. You said seven. Did
- 12:02I? No, I said ten. Kev, roll it back. No, I said
- 12:06two less. You did say two less. And then you
- 12:10explained ten. I initially heard two wins. And
- 12:13I was just like, two? And then you corrected
- 12:17yourself and said two less. I stopped listening.
- 12:20I was like, oh, I got to get a rebuttal for this.
- 12:23Blacked out. All right. Well, let's talk about
- 12:27Seattle. I will not start this one. Okay. Because
- 12:33I have ideas about this one. They lost a lot
- 12:36this year. I mean, it's not surprising for a
- 12:43Super Bowl winning team. like losing Kenneth
- 12:46Walker, Clint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator.
- 12:50So that offensive brain drain, I think, is really
- 12:53going to impact them a lot. But they were smart
- 12:58enough to re -sign Rashid Shaheed. I think he's
- 13:01a very dynamic playmaker on special teams and
- 13:06even as a wide receiver. So some good things
- 13:10there. Charbonnet is still out, injury prone.
- 13:15Who's going to be running the ball? Daniel Wilson.
- 13:18Or Bryce. Doesn't he have a rookie? I think we're
- 13:24going to see a decent amount of regression from
- 13:28the Seahawks. I would say 10 wins. So this is
- 13:34a pretty significant fallback. But again, it's
- 13:37the health of the running back. new play caller
- 13:43uh and you're just in a tough division so i mean
- 13:50it's just it's gonna happen so yeah it's i i
- 13:54mean i'm kind of with you on that so they and
- 13:57they did lose a bunch of people um then also
- 14:00the who's the rookie safety how long is he out
- 14:03for um i'm in worry yes um That running back
- 14:10loss, I think it will affect him a little bit.
- 14:13Yes, Walker, but Walker was hurt also a ton last
- 14:16year. He wasn't, which was kind of the odd year,
- 14:19so they kind of put them on. I'm going to worry
- 14:21he might start the season, I think. He might?
- 14:23All right. Yeah, I think the Seattle defense
- 14:26is still going to be tough. I still think they're
- 14:28top five. JSN is an elite, elite route runner.
- 14:35Sam can slang the ball. Whether they can establish
- 14:40the running game like last year and be so effective
- 14:43and just grinding teams out, then getting the
- 14:45defense and keeping them fresh and then they
- 14:47just attack. Yeah, I'm 10, 11 wins. That's where
- 14:52I'm feeling them this year, too. I still think.
- 14:56they'll be not the division winners, though.
- 14:59Yeah, I think they're second. I agree. I think
- 15:02they will also be second. I think 14 wins is
- 15:05very hard to repeat. Again, especially in this
- 15:08division. Along the lines of both of you, I also
- 15:11agree. 11 wins. I think that defense is going
- 15:15to carry them again to the point where Sam can
- 15:19just sit back there and... be comfortable and
- 15:22not really feel the pressure that the offense
- 15:25really has to make it happen because the defense
- 15:27was just so outstanding last year. And I anticipate
- 15:30them being another top ten defense this year
- 15:33as well. I mean, you hit it on the head with
- 15:37JSN. I mean, is he top five receiver in the league
- 15:39at this point? Yeah. You know, just an outstanding
- 15:43route runner. Yeah, let's touch on that last
- 15:49one here. All right. I mean, division winner
- 15:52for all of us, it sounds like. I mean, I thought
- 15:56they were the better team last year. I thought
- 15:58they were better than Seattle last year. And
- 16:00with the breaking news earlier today, I think
- 16:03even more so plays into that. It'll be interesting
- 16:09to see how much Aaron Donald, you know, signing.
- 16:12I mean, he hasn't played in two years. Two years,
- 16:14you know. He still looks like he's in really
- 16:16good shape. That's what I mean. He's probably
- 16:18fresh. He's not banged up and stuff, you know.
- 16:20Yeah, you know, positive. Continued to work out.
- 16:22Yeah. But NFL season, you know, week five, week
- 16:25eight, you know. I mean, Super Bowl's not won
- 16:28in week one. Yeah. But. With Matt Stafford just
- 16:33slanging it. The Puka issue. That hasn't been
- 16:39resolved yet. We don't know. But, you know, you
- 16:40still got Adams. They just got so much talent
- 16:44and a lot of veteran talent, too. Where that
- 16:47locker room, I think, is pretty solid. That would
- 16:51probably be the only thing I'd do. Like, if Puka's
- 16:54out long -term, I'd probably try to acquire one
- 16:56more. playmaking receiver to round that out.
- 17:00If Stafford can stay healthy, I don't think there's
- 17:03any reason that LA doesn't go to the NFC Championship
- 17:07game again. Vegas has got them that direction.
- 17:12It added Miles Garrett, too. It doesn't get any
- 17:18better. They had a good young defense, too. Verse
- 17:22was one of those stud core guys. Trent McGuffey.
- 17:26To an already good defense, too? Are you kidding
- 17:29me? Yeah, it's pretty wild. Byron Young and Brandon
- 17:33Fisker, the other two really young core defenders,
- 17:37too. But I think their Achilles heel is if they've
- 17:41got to stay healthy in the running back room.
- 17:44They need Williams to do him because that's really
- 17:48where Stafford, I mean, he's play -action stud,
- 17:50and he really works that. So, I mean, that's
- 17:55where I could see the only issues, and then Stafford
- 17:57getting hurt. It was really interesting last
- 18:01year at preseason. He had that neck injury, and
- 18:02we're all wondering if he was even going to play.
- 18:04Is he going to play? Then he came out in pretty
- 18:06much an MVP season. I expect the same out of
- 18:10him. I mean, Kyron had a pretty solid year. And
- 18:13then their backup, Blake Corman, ended up rushing
- 18:15for like 746. I mean, that's not a bad game.
- 18:19No, but they need that out of them. They can
- 18:21do that again. Yeah, I mean, I feel like. The
- 18:25Super Bowl is the ceiling for the Rams, you know?
- 18:27It is Super Bowl or bust. Anything other than
- 18:31the NFC Championship game is a failure for them.
- 18:34Yeah. I mean, that continues just to be the way
- 18:37that they operate their business, where they're
- 18:39F them picks and get Myles Garrett. And then
- 18:43still, because they had like four. no they had
- 18:48five draft picks this year i mean one was ty
- 18:50simpson in the first round which was kind of
- 18:52a head scratcher but i think they're playing
- 18:54the long game on that one because they know it's
- 18:56like we got stafford we can just have ty simpson
- 18:59learn this gig and carry on with life because
- 19:02that's always been what they do is they they
- 19:04draft well and then develop it so It'll be interesting,
- 19:08though. There was that preseason video out there
- 19:10with McVay and that thing when they were talking
- 19:13about whether McVay was on board with Ty Simpson.
- 19:18That was kind of weird. But then afterwards,
- 19:20he said the politically correct answer to whatever
- 19:24why. But he said that was the whole thing with
- 19:27KFC, too, and JJ McCarthy. Well, is that why
- 19:31he's out? The place he's gone is because maybe
- 19:35JJ was his pick. I don't know. But we don't know
- 19:38that information of whose guy was who. No, no,
- 19:42we know. We got insider info. Rams are the favorite
- 19:47to win this. I buy that. So who's your Super
- 19:51Bowl? We didn't do this for the rest of them,
- 19:53but real quick. I'll just do championship games.
- 19:56How about that? We'll do Rams and Lions. Rams
- 20:06and Lions, okay. I think we're going to have
- 20:10a rematch. I think it's going to be Rams -Hawks.
- 20:13Rams -Hawks. Rams -Dallas Cowboys. All right,
- 20:21AFC. You guys go first. Let me see what I can
- 20:24think. Kev, give me my papers. I'm going to go
- 20:30Chiefs. Coming back from the dead, huh? Yes.
- 20:39Ravens. Chiefs, Ravens? I like that, only because
- 20:43you said Ravens. See, I snuck that one in to
- 20:46win some points back. Man, it's going to be...
- 20:52The AFC is going to be a crap shoot in its own
- 20:56right, because there's a lot of teams on similarly
- 21:00equal footing for different reasons. Are the
- 21:06Ravens there? No, I don't think the Ravens are
- 21:08there this year. I think Ravens are a potential
- 21:12wildcard team. I think it's going to be Broncos
- 21:16-Bills. Okay. And I'm going Broncos -Houston.
- 21:22There we go. So no Patriots for any of us. There
- 21:26it is. Sorry, Patriots fans. You had your chance
- 21:30already. It's done. It's over. But Rams fans,
- 21:33I guess we like you. We like you. Yeah. That's
- 21:37it. That's it. Preseason's over? I like it. That's
- 21:41it. Preseason's over. First game is, what did
- 21:43you say, next Wednesday? Next Wednesday. Holy
- 21:46crap. And then next week, all our ideas and thoughts
- 21:49totally change. So that's right. That's right.
- 21:52So listen to these, subscribe, and then forget
- 21:55about these episodes. Yes. As the season starts.
- 21:59So you'll see us next time. Oh, what would it
- 22:02be? Next week, huh? On our preview show of our
- 22:04games. Yes, for week one. And any other news
- 22:07that has came out since then, who knows what's
- 22:09going to happen between now and then. But, Jake,
- 22:12thanks for being here. Thanks for having me.
- 22:14Of course, naturally. Roberto. Thanks, Coach.
- 22:17Of course. Cav. Yerp. You do. Yeah, well, don't
- 22:22forget to like, comment, subscribe, wherever
- 22:24you listen to the banter, whether that's YouTube,
- 22:25Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or iHeartRadio. And
- 22:29we would very much like you to come back and
- 22:32listen to our next episode, please. You know,
- 22:36that would be great. So, yeah. Bye. Skol! Don't
- 22:44forget to follow, like, and subscribe. Tune in
- 22:48next time for more banter with the boys.
