- 0:00Speaker 1: We should start right off because I have some ideas.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Got ahead, Johnny.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Got ahead, Johnny, because you guys have to grind this.
- 0:08Speaker 3: And I'm so excited that some things occurred to me
- 0:11Speaker 3: while I was watching this thing.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Go ahead.
- 0:13Speaker 2: I love it when you come on, you know why,
- 0:15Speaker 2: because you come prepared. You're like, you're as prepared as
- 0:18Speaker 2: Donald and I You're like, you're wound up.
- 0:21Speaker 3: Well, I am a big look going back in and
- 0:23Speaker 3: watching this, first of all, it's hard not to feel
- 0:28Speaker 3: really proud of it. Yeah, and this one I thought
- 0:32Speaker 3: deserved some backdrop because the one Last Week one fifteen
- 0:35Speaker 3: is a spectacular episode.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Zach.
- 0:37Speaker 3: You're particularly great in that episode with Sarah and then
- 0:40Speaker 3: the monologues with the shrink, let the whole ensemble just shine.
- 0:45Speaker 3: And I busted my ass on those monologues because the
- 0:48Speaker 3: writing was astonished.
- 0:50Speaker 2: And you notice there's no cuts. I mean, we were
- 0:52Speaker 2: clearly all.
- 0:53Speaker 4: Told that they would be wonders.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, they were, especially since Donald knew it, so we
- 0:59Speaker 2: were clearly all that there would be no cuts.
- 1:02Speaker 3: But what I thought was really interesting and maybe interesting
- 1:05Speaker 3: for people listening is a little bit of context. And
- 1:09Speaker 3: what I mean is because in this episode, it became
- 1:13Speaker 3: clear to me just how gelled the ensemble is. Whether
- 1:16Speaker 3: it's Kenny and Judy, you and me, Zachi Donald and Sarah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: the thing is just water tight. And the reason is
- 1:26Speaker 3: because I think now, as we discussed.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Already, nine to eleven had already occurred.
- 1:30Speaker 3: We're round about the middle of December here, and so
- 1:34Speaker 3: what happened in New York, which I'll circle this back,
- 1:38Speaker 3: was the New York Yankees lost the World Series in
- 1:41Speaker 3: seven games to the Arizona Diamondbacks. And the only reason
- 1:45Speaker 3: that's relevant is because they lost. There was no tick
- 1:49Speaker 3: or tape parade in New York City, so we were
- 1:52Speaker 3: invited to the Thanksgiving Parade in New York City. And
- 1:57Speaker 3: it was the first taste of real rock Star for
- 2:00Speaker 3: all of us because we worked till Wednesday night, till
- 2:02Speaker 3: about nine to twenty five, and this was a week
- 2:05Speaker 3: or two before this episode, and then we were whisked
- 2:09Speaker 3: off to Lax where we occupied the entire front of
- 2:14Speaker 3: first class.
- 2:15Speaker 5: There was only one other person. There was only one
- 2:17Speaker 5: other there, that's right, and it was a boy band.
- 2:20Speaker 5: It was like uh oh Town or something like that.
- 2:23Speaker 5: We shared first class. It was the cast of Scrubs
- 2:26Speaker 5: and Otown.
- 2:26Speaker 4: I remember, it.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Might as well have been in private plane, it wasn't.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But it was first class. It wasn't coach. It was
- 2:31Speaker 3: first It wasn't business class. It was first class. And
- 2:35Speaker 3: we were going to New York to participate in the
- 2:37Speaker 3: Thanksgiving Day parade. Now, remember there had been no mass
- 2:40Speaker 3: gatherings allowed in New York since that Tuesday morning in September.
- 2:46Speaker 1: This just wasn't allowed. The Yankees were supposed to be there,
- 2:48Speaker 1: but they weren't.
- 2:50Speaker 3: So we fly overnight, and you guys can chime in,
- 2:52Speaker 3: but we fly overnight, we go, we're deposited at some
- 2:56Speaker 3: chapel on the Upper West Side somewhere.
- 2:58Speaker 5: We didn't even go to the hotel. We just they
- 3:00Speaker 5: dropped us off at the freaking parade.
- 3:03Speaker 2: We were like lying on the on the ground in
- 3:05Speaker 2: the chapel to.
- 3:05Speaker 3: Kind absolutely, And we got sideways on the plane, yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 2: As you do.
- 3:16Speaker 3: And and then we got up and Zachie, I think
- 3:19Speaker 3: you brought your nephew onto the float. And it was
- 3:23Speaker 3: a quasi racist kind of Pocahontas float.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And they've gotten they've gotten rid of some of those
- 3:31Speaker 2: since then, I think, Yeah, but.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Absolutely, here's the scrubs cast and a quasi racist Pocahonta's
- 3:37Speaker 3: float on the upper west side in the staging area.
- 3:40Speaker 3: And who pulls up behind us but the Wiggles in
- 3:43Speaker 3: the big red car. Now, I had gone to Wiggles
- 3:47Speaker 3: concerts with my son every time they're in Los Angeles
- 3:50Speaker 3: for the last couple of years. I was eating, sleeping,
- 3:53Speaker 3: and drinking the Wiggles. So I got off the float
- 3:56Speaker 3: and I went back to the big Red car and
- 3:58Speaker 3: produced myself to Murray and Jeff and I introduced myself
- 4:00Speaker 3: to everybody, and I became friends with the Wiggles, and
- 4:04Speaker 3: I am to this day.
- 4:06Speaker 4: You hang out with the Wiggles still not really.
- 4:08Speaker 1: But I did a video for them and they became
- 4:12Speaker 1: my friends. They're great educating.
- 4:13Speaker 2: My memory started interrupt one second, Johnny. My memory is
- 4:16Speaker 2: that my nephew was a very outspoken kid and not
- 4:21Speaker 2: shy at all. And I don't know how old he was,
- 4:23Speaker 2: but he was little, and we had to be like nine, dude,
- 4:26Speaker 2: no younger or younger younger.
- 4:27Speaker 1: He was a kid.
- 4:28Speaker 2: And so Al Roke we're off the flow at one
- 4:30Speaker 2: point and Al Roker's interviewing us, and he goes and
- 4:33Speaker 2: I'm here with the cast of Scrubs and I've got
- 4:35Speaker 2: Johnny ce McGinley and Donald Faiza's going around introducing the
- 4:37Speaker 2: whole cast, and my nephew, this is live television. And
- 4:41Speaker 2: my nephew goes, what about me? And Al Roker? It's awkward,
- 4:47Speaker 2: and Al Roker ignores him and starts so tell us
- 4:50Speaker 2: about the show. Interrupts him again, what about me? And
- 4:57Speaker 2: finally Al feels bad enough that he's like, oh, I'm sorry,
- 5:01Speaker 2: young man, you're right, and what's your name? And then
- 5:03Speaker 2: he introduces himself. But I was like, it was my
- 5:05Speaker 2: first and.
- 5:05Speaker 4: He throwing gang signs too, Like, wasn't throw.
- 5:08Speaker 2: He didn't, he didn't, he didn't know any like real
- 5:11Speaker 2: gang signs, but he had seen on TV how how
- 5:13Speaker 2: how rappers and whomever throw gang signs. So we're on
- 5:16Speaker 2: the float and he's like throwing these like almost gang signs.
- 5:21Speaker 3: When I when I spoke to Al Roker after after
- 5:25Speaker 3: he cut, I said, how, how is this for a turnout?
- 5:28Speaker 3: And he said this will be the largest turnout in
- 5:30Speaker 3: the history of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. And I said, well,
- 5:33Speaker 3: give me an estimate, and he said, there'll be about
- 5:35Speaker 3: three and a half million people here. And so every
- 5:37Speaker 3: time we went through an intersection, and I'll wrap this
- 5:40Speaker 3: story up in a minute, but every time we went
- 5:41Speaker 3: down an intersection, you could see it was one hundred
- 5:45Speaker 3: to two hundred people deep at every intersection. I've never
- 5:48Speaker 3: seen that many people. I never will in my life.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it was. That was.
- 5:53Speaker 5: I remember being like, wow, there are so many people here,
- 5:56Speaker 5: and we were on the float and every You're right,
- 5:59Speaker 5: every time we passed an intersection it looked like it
- 6:02Speaker 5: went so deep into the intersection. I remember thinking, how
- 6:06Speaker 5: are all of these people? It was like sardines too,
- 6:09Speaker 5: Like they were packed together.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Because nobody had been allowed nobody had been allowed to
- 6:14Speaker 3: gather since that Tuesday.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And another thing I remember is that my nephew was
- 6:18Speaker 2: on the float and he I thought, oh, this will
- 6:20Speaker 2: be fun for him. He was He was bored in
- 6:22Speaker 2: thirty seconds, right, And I was like, oh fuck, I
- 6:24Speaker 2: got to take care of this kid for a whole parade.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Yeah, we had to. It's all the way from Uptown,
- 6:29Speaker 4: all the way to Mason.
- 6:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And he's throwing his gang signs for a while and
- 6:32Speaker 2: then he got bored of that. And then there was
- 6:34Speaker 2: like an upstairs in the float. I don't know if
- 6:35Speaker 2: it was like it was like in Pocahontas's head or something.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Well, no, it was a multi tiered ship that was
- 6:41Speaker 1: a boat.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Yeah, but even like in the non outside area, there
- 6:46Speaker 2: was some spot he found and then he went up
- 6:48Speaker 2: there and he found bubble wrap and I was like, okay,
- 6:49Speaker 2: fucking bubble wrap will entertain him for a little while.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Then he got over the buck. He was stomping on
- 6:54Speaker 2: the bubble wrap, and I was like, this is I'm
- 6:56Speaker 2: never having kids. This is like the worst. What about my.
- 7:01Speaker 3: My only point bringing this up, and I'll circle it back,
- 7:05Speaker 3: was that. And also remember a couple of weeks earlier,
- 7:08Speaker 3: actually about a month earlier, we had been picked up
- 7:11Speaker 3: for the back nine and we ran around the hospital
- 7:14Speaker 3: where our HUDs cut off, and so that meant you
- 7:17Speaker 3: had paychecks until.
- 7:19Speaker 1: May the first week of run yourself.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Because in TV you only get paid for episodes produced, and.
- 7:25Speaker 2: So they just you know, it just let's explain to
- 7:27Speaker 2: people who don't know the show was picked up for
- 7:30Speaker 2: the first thirteen episodes, and they kind of see how
- 7:33Speaker 2: you do in the ratings, and then if you do
- 7:36Speaker 2: well enough in the ratings, you get the rest of
- 7:37Speaker 2: the order, which which is in business talk is called
- 7:41Speaker 2: the back nine, meaning you get nine more episodes.
- 7:45Speaker 3: And we had been given that news about a month earlier,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and we ran around the hospital like we'd won the
- 7:49Speaker 3: Stanley Cuppers.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I remember vivid that.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And my only point in this is that between getting
- 7:55Speaker 3: picked Up and now about fifteen or sixteen episodes into it,
- 7:58Speaker 3: and I can see it in this episode, as we'll discuss,
- 8:02Speaker 3: but the ensemble is water tight, whether it meant going
- 8:06Speaker 3: on a trip together or getting picked up, people are
- 8:08Speaker 3: starting to vibe off each other. And it's as clear
- 8:11Speaker 3: as day when I was watching it, it's just what
- 8:14Speaker 3: Donald and Sarah are doing. As you guys know, I
- 8:17Speaker 3: think the camera is an X ray machine and it
- 8:19Speaker 3: sees through all the bullshit and.
- 8:22Speaker 1: What they're doing together, there's zero bullshit. And what Zach
- 8:25Speaker 1: is doing at the end with Sarah in that in
- 8:28Speaker 1: that on that cot, there's no bullshit.
- 8:31Speaker 3: It's it's just tight and right, and I just get
- 8:35Speaker 3: a chill. It just it really got me.
- 8:37Speaker 2: You gave me a chill too, because I gotta tell you,
- 8:39Speaker 2: I didn't remember in that scene with Sarah what happened.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I didn't know if it was going to turn romantic.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I didn't know if I cried, I couldn't remember. And
- 8:47Speaker 2: I was actually moved by the two of us because
- 8:50Speaker 2: nothing happens like I agree, like I agree, like like
- 8:54Speaker 2: you like would happen in real life. You know, in
- 8:56Speaker 2: the movies, we'd kiss. In the movies, I'd break down
- 8:59Speaker 2: and cry, But in real life two friends might just
- 9:01Speaker 2: sit there in silence for a minute. And I just
- 9:03Speaker 2: thought that was beautifully done.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I think it's the real privilege of friendship when nothing
- 9:08Speaker 3: does happen, so that I don't have to demonstrate to
- 9:12Speaker 3: you anything and you don't have to demonstrate ending to me.
- 9:15Speaker 3: And real friendship is when stuff is allowed. And it's
- 9:18Speaker 3: a tricky verb to settle, and you guys let it
- 9:21Speaker 3: settle in front of the lens. And as we'll discuss
- 9:24Speaker 3: Will McKenzie, he just let the scene play and the
- 9:27Speaker 3: two actors it's really lovely. And on a primetime comedy,
- 9:31Speaker 3: it's spectacular.
- 9:32Speaker 1: It's spectacular.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Should we start the show?
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 9:36Speaker 2: But which is that the show? But I think Johnny,
- 9:38Speaker 2: because of that beautiful prologue, should should have the honor
- 9:41Speaker 2: of counting a Sindo. The song Johnny Fleet stories about show.
- 9:47Speaker 4: We made about a bunch of tho.
- 9:54Speaker 6: He's a story.
- 10:01Speaker 4: Yeah, Scrubs.
- 10:09Speaker 2: So I've been using this Scrubs wiki. Johnny that that
- 10:13Speaker 2: gets it is Scrubs.
- 10:14Speaker 1: I've heard you referenced it. By the way, you guys
- 10:15Speaker 1: are killing this podcast. Well, we're having a lot of
- 10:18Speaker 1: Scrubs Wiki.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Scrubs wiki is uh. If you just put in Scrubs
- 10:22Speaker 2: wiki into into the Google machine, it brings you up
- 10:26Speaker 2: this this thing that I guess multiple fans are one
- 10:30Speaker 2: fan has curated. It's on a website called fandom dot com.
- 10:33Speaker 2: I guess it's a place where where fans can collect
- 10:36Speaker 2: trivia and share stories, and you know, it's a fan site.
- 10:39Speaker 2: But someone, and I'm thinking it might be one person,
- 10:42Speaker 2: has put a lot of work into this because every
- 10:45Speaker 2: episode it has the synopsis, it has recurring themes, it
- 10:47Speaker 2: has guest stars, it has the famous quotes, and it
- 10:50Speaker 2: has trivia from each episode. And today and I often
- 10:53Speaker 2: reference it, and today I went to look at the
- 10:55Speaker 2: trivia and the first line of trivia it says, hi
- 10:58Speaker 2: Zac exclamation point, glad you're enjoying Scrubs Wiki. Have me
- 11:03Speaker 2: on the podcast question mark, have Joel searched for my email. Wow,
- 11:09Speaker 2: so I've been discovered by the curator of Scrubs Wiki
- 11:12Speaker 2: as a as an avid fan. But I will have
- 11:15Speaker 2: Joel seek you out and I and I have to
- 11:18Speaker 2: tell you've done a fantastic job because it's very useful.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I can find out all sorts of of trivia. Like
- 11:23Speaker 2: Kelso mentions Baxter for the very first time in this episode.
- 11:27Speaker 1: There's a lot of trivia in here.
- 11:28Speaker 2: There's a lot of interesting stuff. So I think, Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 2: Joel says she's going to track him down, and this
- 11:33Speaker 2: fellah knows a lot about Scrubs, so I think it
- 11:36Speaker 2: might be fun to have him on. We can, we
- 11:38Speaker 2: can try and stump him.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Well, let me get to you at at at early
- 11:42Speaker 3: on at at a minute or two in you and
- 11:43Speaker 3: Sarah in the batting cage.
- 11:45Speaker 2: You Zach, Yeah, why am I? Why is Jad at
- 11:48Speaker 2: the at the batting kids?
- 11:48Speaker 1: You know?
- 11:49Speaker 3: Well, it's as Donald as Donald knows. No one says
- 11:52Speaker 3: you don't even play sports. There's no no one's ever
- 11:55Speaker 3: said that in the history of the English language, which
- 11:58Speaker 3: is great writing, and you deliver like you really know sports.
- 12:01Speaker 3: But you and Sarah in there, you redeem yourself from
- 12:04Speaker 3: early on. When you get bricks dropped on your head
- 12:07Speaker 3: and you anticipated it, you don't anticipate the beanball in this,
- 12:12Speaker 3: and neither does Sarah.
- 12:13Speaker 4: Yeah, well I gotta tell you I commit it.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Yeah we did. I did not flinch. I was not
- 12:18Speaker 2: gonna let that happen again, Johnny.
- 12:19Speaker 1: From that, From that, it happened again.
- 12:21Speaker 2: And and it's hard to you know, to anticipate, uh,
- 12:25Speaker 2: to not anticipate a softball being thrown at your head.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Well, you both did it, and as a result, it's
- 12:32Speaker 3: it's Charlie Chaplin funny.
- 12:33Speaker 2: But why is why is j D at the batic gage?
- 12:35Speaker 2: He's not even with Turk like maybe one thing, be
- 12:37Speaker 2: one thing if he's a good turk like Turk made
- 12:39Speaker 2: me come I'm alone at the batting gages.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:41Speaker 5: Neither one of you played sports, neither one of you
- 12:43Speaker 5: playing baseball, neither one of you.
- 12:47Speaker 4: In real life too, I know.
- 12:49Speaker 5: But why I think Sarah Like in high school, Sarah
- 12:53Speaker 5: was like on the shot put team.
- 12:55Speaker 4: Yeah, who was on the shot.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I've never heard Sarah talk about single sport, have you?
- 13:01Speaker 1: Oh? Ski?
- 13:01Speaker 2: She's a good snowboarder, snowboard Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's Canadian.
- 13:06Speaker 2: I think that's a rule up there. You got to
- 13:07Speaker 2: be able to ski your snowboard. But she yeah, I
- 13:11Speaker 2: just didn't understand that bit of writing. Mike Schwartz, we
- 13:13Speaker 2: should say he was the writer of this episode, along
- 13:16Speaker 2: with as Johnny mentioned, Will McKenzie, who is a concredible
- 13:19Speaker 2: director and directed Everybody's a lot of people's favorite episode,
- 13:23Speaker 2: the musical episode.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Will McKenzie is famous on set for the way he says.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Akido yeah, and and cut yeah do it? Do you remember?
- 13:34Speaker 2: Do you remember? Johnny?
- 13:37Speaker 4: But he also does this so dogs coming into the room.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it. He sums up the scene. He's like, okay,
- 13:44Speaker 2: and here comes Donald and he's mad about what Carla
- 13:46Speaker 2: just did and action.
- 13:50Speaker 1: This is and cup.
- 13:52Speaker 2: I think he's He's directed a zillion sitcoms too. I
- 13:55Speaker 2: mean he was, he was, you know, he's a legendary
- 13:58Speaker 2: TV director. He I think he's retired, I imagine now,
- 14:01Speaker 2: but he is just a legend.
- 14:03Speaker 4: And a pretty good tennis player.
- 14:05Speaker 1: Apparently.
- 14:07Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I heard.
- 14:08Speaker 2: That's what you heard.
- 14:09Speaker 4: I heard. Will can make it so you're running around
- 14:12Speaker 4: while he's standing in one place.
- 14:14Speaker 2: There were a lot of directors that when you showed
- 14:16Speaker 2: up on set on Monday morning, you saw who it
- 14:18Speaker 2: was and you just had a big old smile on
- 14:21Speaker 2: your face. And Will McKenzie was always one of those
- 14:24Speaker 2: guys for all of us, we just would like he
- 14:26Speaker 2: was like, you know, he just just felt like a
- 14:28Speaker 2: grandfather figure because he was an older guy, but he
- 14:33Speaker 2: had so much experience and he had a big old
- 14:35Speaker 2: smile on his face and I just I love that guy.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Also in this in this episode, some of the I
- 14:41Speaker 3: don't know how to say this, some of the peripheral characters,
- 14:43Speaker 3: whether it's Sammy, which I'll get to in a minute,
- 14:46Speaker 3: or Neil is the janitor get to really shine, Yeah,
- 14:52Speaker 3: and and the janitor and it I guess I think
- 14:55Speaker 3: one O three when he says girl problems and then
- 14:59Speaker 3: you say, and then Cox says, I'd say they're a
- 15:02Speaker 3: beacup and the button is at least.
- 15:04Speaker 1: They're real laugh out loud, stealing, I'm stealing Zachy's laugh
- 15:08Speaker 1: out loud. I did.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I laughed out loud at that man. And uh, you know,
- 15:13Speaker 2: because it's funny because you know, we keep fucking with
- 15:16Speaker 2: Bill Johnny because he's he's hanging on by his fingernails
- 15:19Speaker 2: to this old lore that the Janitor barely talked to
- 15:23Speaker 2: anybody in season one, and and he was just still
- 15:26Speaker 2: deciding by the time he started season two if he
- 15:28Speaker 2: was going to make the Janitor solely a figment of
- 15:30Speaker 2: Jad's imagination hanging on he is.
- 15:35Speaker 5: And and and every episode the Janitor's talking to a
- 15:38Speaker 5: different cast and Donald and I.
- 15:40Speaker 2: Donald and I joked that we're like Detective as being like, well,
- 15:43Speaker 2: how would Bill possibly rationalize this one? And uh, you
- 15:47Speaker 2: know again, Bill would say, well, he's not interacting with Johnny. See,
- 15:50Speaker 2: he just he just if he's a if he's a
- 15:52Speaker 2: figure of Jad's imagination, he hears what Cox says and
- 15:55Speaker 2: just builds on it, you know.
- 15:57Speaker 1: But but also, and I'm going to keep circling back
- 15:59Speaker 1: with this, you could see and in this case, it's
- 16:02Speaker 1: just a simple, clean scene. Donald and Zach at two nine,
- 16:06Speaker 1: when you take the phone call from your mom and
- 16:08Speaker 1: you find out about mister Peters.
- 16:10Speaker 3: You too are just it's in carpentry. It's called tongue
- 16:13Speaker 3: and groove. You guys are just effortless. And it sets
- 16:17Speaker 3: up the whole scene. There's a ton of n expository
- 16:21Speaker 3: stuff in it, and it's just effortless, and it's only
- 16:28Speaker 3: because of what you guys had become in those I
- 16:31Speaker 3: guess seventeen or eighteen weeks by then.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I remember, well, I don't. I don't remember any
- 16:36Speaker 5: of this episode except for the handshake. And I had
- 16:39Speaker 5: no idea even and when we did the handshake, I
- 16:42Speaker 5: had no clue what Sarah and I like. I thought
- 16:44Speaker 5: it was something that Sarah and I made up on
- 16:46Speaker 5: set and it turned into something in the scene. But
- 16:50Speaker 5: I think we made it up for the scene and
- 16:53Speaker 5: it turned into something that we did on set.
- 16:55Speaker 2: Yeah, we saw this handshake. Johnny and I had to
- 16:59Speaker 2: endure this handshake get longer and longer. I think by
- 17:01Speaker 2: the end of it. I think by the end of
- 17:03Speaker 2: nine years, it took them an hour and a half
- 17:04Speaker 2: to do the handshake, and.
- 17:05Speaker 4: That was just to say hello to each other.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:08Speaker 3: During during the Vietnam War, I found out it was
- 17:10Speaker 3: called a dap A dap.
- 17:13Speaker 1: We would it up, you would adapt somebody.
- 17:15Speaker 2: But wait, now, Donald, you don't remember if you guys
- 17:18Speaker 2: were just walking around and made this up and then
- 17:20Speaker 2: put it in the show, or.
- 17:21Speaker 4: I think it came from the handshake in the show.
- 17:25Speaker 5: I think our handshake we made it up for the show,
- 17:29Speaker 5: and then it turned into something that we did all
- 17:31Speaker 5: the time when we saw each other.
- 17:32Speaker 3: But that that, once again is what I'm talking about.
- 17:35Speaker 3: It's effortless. Yeah, it doesn't. Did you complete with totally
- 17:40Speaker 3: long and and then you guys throw it away and
- 17:43Speaker 3: go right into the scene and that that's later on.
- 17:45Speaker 3: But I was so struck by so many of these vignettes.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Ye completely tongue and groove.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree, man, and and and and Donald. Did
- 17:57Speaker 2: you make that up or did Sarah contribute? Like it's
- 17:59Speaker 2: pretty great?
- 18:01Speaker 1: Some of it.
- 18:01Speaker 4: I made up a lot of it. I know I
- 18:03Speaker 4: made up because it's uh, it has it has rhythm
- 18:06Speaker 4: to it.
- 18:06Speaker 2: That's why.
- 18:06Speaker 4: Well there's that, and then there's also.
- 18:09Speaker 1: There's Sarah could do all that stuff, Yes, you could.
- 18:12Speaker 5: There was It was also a like what is it
- 18:15Speaker 5: that remember how we were talking about the color purple
- 18:18Speaker 5: and miss when Celi and her sister are broken.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Up and they're doing the hand miss patty Cake ca.
- 18:25Speaker 5: Yeah, so it also has a little bit of that
- 18:28Speaker 5: in it where it's like where we slap each other's hand.
- 18:32Speaker 5: I don't know, man, all I know is yeah, no,
- 18:35Speaker 5: that thing was made up for this episode, and it
- 18:38Speaker 5: turned into I.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Like, I like what Johnny said too, that you kind
- 18:41Speaker 2: of go into this ele everything and then you just
- 18:42Speaker 2: kind of go into the scene like nothing happened.
- 18:44Speaker 4: It's just dull.
- 18:45Speaker 2: You just did a high five. I thought that.
- 18:47Speaker 1: But it's the same way. It's the same way. I
- 18:50Speaker 1: feel like, I'm maybe it sounds like I'm blowing too
- 18:52Speaker 1: much smoke up your guys asses, but I'll take it.
- 18:54Speaker 6: We'll take it.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I'm like Donald, I don't remember any of this stuff.
- 18:57Speaker 3: So then when we go back and watch it, I'm
- 19:00Speaker 3: I'm sincerely struck by different things. And in this episode,
- 19:04Speaker 3: unlike the last one we watched together, I wasn't struck
- 19:08Speaker 3: by as many things other than the circumstances that were
- 19:10Speaker 3: occurring outside of scrubs. In this I was really struck
- 19:14Speaker 3: by what was happening in front of the lens and
- 19:16Speaker 3: what the writers did. And then at three minutes there's
- 19:19Speaker 3: this great walking talk between Zachi and Cox, and the
- 19:22Speaker 3: writers let Cox be this fierce, fierce patient advocate and
- 19:29Speaker 3: it grounds them in a way that it's just genius
- 19:32Speaker 3: because it gives them license to then.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Go do what He's about to go do, which is
- 19:36Speaker 1: destroy a lab.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Now, this is the first time we really see Cox
- 19:41Speaker 2: have this raw motion. Johnny, I think that you know,
- 19:44Speaker 2: we had seen him be upset. There's the episode Where's
- 19:48Speaker 2: where he's just saying, Jad, you need to have a life.
- 19:50Speaker 2: I have no fucking life. But this is, you know,
- 19:53Speaker 2: the first time we see how much pain this man
- 19:56Speaker 2: has and how dedicated he is to his profession. So
- 20:00Speaker 2: I just talked a bit about that, and of course
- 20:02Speaker 2: destroying this lab. Papper in the backgrounds Charles pappard Our
- 20:09Speaker 2: steadycam operators back is the one of the lab text.
- 20:12Speaker 2: But I mean, do you remember that day trashing that lab?
- 20:15Speaker 2: That must have been cathartic.
- 20:16Speaker 1: I do, and I had.
- 20:17Speaker 3: I had been lucky enough in nineteen ninety four, and
- 20:22Speaker 3: lucky is in italics to have been with Michael Caine,
- 20:27Speaker 3: your actor in your Lovely movie up in Valdize, Alaska,
- 20:32Speaker 3: and with Steven Seagal directing an epic movie for Warner
- 20:36Speaker 3: Brothers called on Deadly Ground.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Stephen was.
- 20:40Speaker 3: And I got to destroy a house, and halfway through it,
- 20:45Speaker 3: I find a petrified walrus penis, which is called an usk,
- 20:49Speaker 3: and so.
- 20:50Speaker 2: I slow down, You're gonna not you can't rush you.
- 20:54Speaker 2: You can't the listeners that the listeners have questions, how
- 20:59Speaker 2: did you find a Don't worry, we're gonna get back
- 21:01Speaker 2: to destroying the lab. Everybody, How did you How did
- 21:04Speaker 2: you know that it was a petrified walrus penis?
- 21:06Speaker 3: I asked, there's this long fallus? And I asked the
- 21:09Speaker 3: production designer, I said, what's this? And he goes, well,
- 21:12Speaker 3: it's a petrified walr's penis. And he said, God al mighty,
- 21:16Speaker 3: just call action and get on my eyeline.
- 21:19Speaker 1: If you don't think that's coming in the frame, you're
- 21:22Speaker 1: out of your mind.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Look out, everybody.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And so I I what my takeaway from destroying house,
- 21:31Speaker 3: just destroying it.
- 21:33Speaker 1: Was go slow. If you destroy a house or a
- 21:36Speaker 1: lab too fast, the camera doesn't get it.
- 21:39Speaker 3: It's just like as Donald definitely knows, either taking or
- 21:42Speaker 3: throwing a punch in front of the lens. If you
- 21:44Speaker 3: go too fast, the camera doesn't see it. Yeah, and
- 21:47Speaker 3: it's the same same with destroying a room.
- 21:50Speaker 1: You've got to go slow.
- 21:51Speaker 3: And it's funny Billy who or will ramped it up
- 21:56Speaker 3: to high speed for the throw through the window, because
- 21:59Speaker 3: otherwise that stuff happens too fast and you don't get it.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm sure Zach.
- 22:04Speaker 3: As a filmmaker, you know, unless you cover a fight
- 22:08Speaker 3: or destroying something pretty meticulously, the lens misses it.
- 22:13Speaker 1: And so my only thought in destroying that lab was
- 22:16Speaker 1: take your time. Yeah.
- 22:18Speaker 5: Well, when I watched that, I was like, how much
- 22:20Speaker 5: trouble would doctor Cox bey and if he were to
- 22:23Speaker 5: do that, and how much money did he just throw
- 22:26Speaker 5: out the window by doing all of that?
- 22:29Speaker 1: I know, I was thinking the same thing.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I thought the same thing too. I thought like, did
- 22:33Speaker 2: they have some system or no one's gonna tell kelso,
- 22:35Speaker 2: because I mean, Carla implies that he freaks out at
- 22:39Speaker 2: least once a year, right, And I was like, does
- 22:41Speaker 2: everyone sort of protect him, because you know, in the
- 22:45Speaker 2: real world of a hospital, he'd be in a phenomenal
- 22:48Speaker 2: amount of trouble for this.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yeah. I couldn't that. That was the first thing I thought.
- 22:54Speaker 5: And then I thought when Carla said he does this
- 22:57Speaker 5: once a year, I was like, holy shit, Cox is
- 23:01Speaker 5: you know, it's clear that he's in pain, but he's
- 23:03Speaker 5: in like a lot of pain. And to build it
- 23:06Speaker 5: up to be able to just damage thousands of dollars
- 23:09Speaker 5: of equipment, you know what? I mean, you have to really,
- 23:12Speaker 5: you have to really be on that level of fuck it,
- 23:15Speaker 5: I'm I don't care anymore.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I just I just he clearly doesn't care care anymore.
- 23:19Speaker 2: But they also really need Cox, you know, Cox.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Everybody needs Cox. You're absolutely right.
- 23:24Speaker 2: Well look what you just said, Donald, that was that came.
- 23:26Speaker 1: Out a little bit of you're gonna pull over there, Donald,
- 23:29Speaker 1: You're going fifty.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I'm gonna. I'm gonna That's gonna be my new ringtone,
- 23:34Speaker 2: Donald yelling everybody needs Cox.
- 23:41Speaker 4: In the hospital, in the hospital.
- 23:44Speaker 2: At the hospital, I met the character, and.
- 23:47Speaker 3: Then and then at four thirty nine, we get to
- 23:50Speaker 3: see the janitor do medical jargon.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, and he kills it.
- 23:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 23:56Speaker 2: I remember you know that Neil audition for your part,
- 23:58Speaker 2: you know that trivia Johnny of.
- 24:00Speaker 3: Course, but I mean, he's such a spectacular actor, but
- 24:04Speaker 3: i'd never seen him do. You gotta remember all medical
- 24:07Speaker 3: jargon is Latin based, so when you really get into it,
- 24:10Speaker 3: you're just talking Latin.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And so for the janitor just to peel out some
- 24:14Speaker 1: Latin question me.
- 24:16Speaker 2: By the way, I wondered when I wondered if I
- 24:18Speaker 2: think that might be the only time the janitors ever
- 24:20Speaker 2: in our apartment.
- 24:21Speaker 5: I was gonna ask that we should ask Bill if
- 24:24Speaker 5: he remembers putting the janitor in the apartment at any point.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Okay, Donald has pulled the lever for an ask Bill, Joel, Bill,
- 24:33Speaker 2: you're not gonna remember. I bet the guy on Wiki
- 24:36Speaker 2: Scrubs knows better than you, but.
- 24:37Speaker 4: We're gonna ask you.
- 24:39Speaker 2: By the way, you know we should do We should also, Joelle,
- 24:41Speaker 2: that's what we should do with that guy. We should
- 24:43Speaker 2: haven't asked Bill button, but we should haven't also asked
- 24:46Speaker 2: the Scrubs wicked because he knows he's the keeper of
- 24:50Speaker 2: the trivia more than Bill. Bill's gonna be like, I
- 24:51Speaker 2: don't know, five, six, seven, eight, and uh Bill, Bill
- 24:56Speaker 2: has found is what you're talking about? Willis Johnny. He
- 25:00Speaker 2: he's found his catchphrase. So now he just says five
- 25:02Speaker 2: and the fans think it's hilarious. He just starts hilarious,
- 25:05Speaker 2: he starts the theme song, and Donald and I have
- 25:07Speaker 2: to stop the damn thing. So anyway, Joelle, when we
- 25:12Speaker 2: talk to that guy, when we find him, let's ask
- 25:14Speaker 2: him if we can ask him Scrubs trivia. But for now,
- 25:17Speaker 2: since we only have Bill, Bill, do you think this
- 25:19Speaker 2: is the only time that the janitor is ever in
- 25:22Speaker 2: our apartment, even though it's a fantasy.
- 25:24Speaker 7: Neil, I'm going by memory here, guys, But Neil Flynn
- 25:27Speaker 7: was in Turk and JD's apartment when there's a fantasy
- 25:33Speaker 7: about him being a doctor, and I believe he returns
- 25:37Speaker 7: to try and fix their air conditioning or pipes or
- 25:42Speaker 7: something in a later season. But I think he was
- 25:45Speaker 7: only there twice except once I think he was implied
- 25:52Speaker 7: that he was there a third time, that he and
- 25:53Speaker 7: doctor Cox moved JD's bed somewhere and they did it together.
- 25:58Speaker 2: Thank you, Bill.
- 26:00Speaker 3: And once again at five forty nine when when Kenny
- 26:05Speaker 3: and when Kelso and and and Jude are together, they're butter.
- 26:11Speaker 3: They're total butter.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Oh gosh, yeah, they're butter.
- 26:14Speaker 2: Now how about Judy, they're they they're great. How about Judy?
- 26:16Speaker 2: So for first Judy, I noticed, because this is funny
- 26:19Speaker 2: tracking the when we shot this in two thousand and one,
- 26:22Speaker 2: that Judy says I got to get a tape deck,
- 26:25Speaker 2: which I thought was funny. And then and then when
- 26:28Speaker 2: she brings in and it's actually a CD player, it's
- 26:31Speaker 2: just funny.
- 26:31Speaker 5: Even now you realize that you're you're definitely pretty good show.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Dude, that's very good because I did not pick up
- 26:38Speaker 4: on that. Well.
- 26:38Speaker 2: I caught her. I caught her saying tape deck, and
- 26:40Speaker 2: then my brain went, there's no way it was cassettes.
- 26:43Speaker 2: I remember it was at least CDs and uh and
- 26:46Speaker 2: then and I guess that was just still I'm imagining.
- 26:49Speaker 2: In two thousand and one, we were still using the
- 26:51Speaker 2: expression tape deck, like I'll get a tape deck and
- 26:54Speaker 2: I have a I.
- 26:55Speaker 1: Have a question for you.
- 26:56Speaker 3: On the heels of that, when Kenny says, like Motley
- 26:59Speaker 3: Crue and Winger, my son's a bit of a headbanger,
- 27:03Speaker 3: first of all, that crushed me.
- 27:04Speaker 1: And is that the first time?
- 27:06Speaker 3: First of many when he refers to his son, who
- 27:10Speaker 3: turns out is just a cavalcade of eccentricity.
- 27:15Speaker 2: A cavalcade of eccentricities is a great title for a screenplay,
- 27:19Speaker 2: but that is funny. The Scrubs Wiki said, it's the
- 27:24Speaker 2: first time he mentions Baxter. I don't know if it's
- 27:26Speaker 2: the first time his son comes up, but this might
- 27:28Speaker 2: be the first time his son comes up in terms
- 27:30Speaker 2: of being a cavalcade of eccentricity.
- 27:35Speaker 3: His son, it turns out it's the single most tortured
- 27:38Speaker 3: person on the planet I know.
- 27:40Speaker 2: And we never got to meet him, and we never
- 27:42Speaker 2: met his wife. I think it was Enil.
- 27:43Speaker 1: But it's so much better. It's so much better.
- 27:45Speaker 2: No, it was all Remember remember on Cheers when you
- 27:48Speaker 2: never saw Flitzer cliffs. No, I think it was Norm's wife, Vera.
- 27:53Speaker 2: We never saw. Well gave me the thumbs up?
- 27:56Speaker 1: Am I right? Joell? Wow?
- 27:57Speaker 4: Well well played Zach.
- 28:00Speaker 2: That bartender would always ali upe him, see I bet
- 28:03Speaker 2: sports reference, and and then he'd he'd have a one
- 28:06Speaker 2: liner and and and dunk it if.
- 28:08Speaker 5: He I blew, I blew one line because I didn't
- 28:10Speaker 5: remember it. Vera does make an appearance on Cheers, though,
- 28:12Speaker 5: I guess really?
- 28:13Speaker 2: And then well won Well, Joelle, did you go on
- 28:15Speaker 2: the Cheers wiki and find out that Vera does make
- 28:18Speaker 2: an appearance on the Thanksgiving Day as you.
- 28:20Speaker 3: Guys, As you guys have done so wonderfully. I do
- 28:25Speaker 3: want to look at Sammy for a second. Who uh
- 28:29Speaker 3: is astonishing? Yea episode?
- 28:32Speaker 2: This really is? Probably is this probably is I hate
- 28:35Speaker 2: to say it, but probably his first real I mean,
- 28:38Speaker 2: other than one liners. This is the first episode where
- 28:41Speaker 2: Sammy really shined as the and even even.
- 28:44Speaker 1: When he and he and and Jude together are are
- 28:48Speaker 1: completely money.
- 28:49Speaker 2: Did you guys get goosebumps when they sang together?
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, absolutely.
- 28:53Speaker 3: But the first time we see Sammy, he does this
- 28:56Speaker 3: thing with his hand where he puts it way in
- 28:59Speaker 3: the back of his.
- 29:02Speaker 1: Donald. My triceps are too big to even do this.
- 29:06Speaker 2: Let me get your fucking arms, arms to you, to
- 29:09Speaker 2: you listeners out there, I want you to know this
- 29:12Speaker 2: guy is still fucking ripped. He's got bigger biceps than
- 29:16Speaker 2: than anyone I I know.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I think.
- 29:19Speaker 4: Are you still doing a lot of paddlesurfing?
- 29:21Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 29:21Speaker 2: Every day, every day you paddle surf. Yeah, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, you.
- 29:27Speaker 5: Are Let me say something, you got, mister Miyagi body
- 29:30Speaker 5: where it's like you're doing you know active you know,
- 29:34Speaker 5: everything is for a purpose.
- 29:37Speaker 4: I row, I row a board in the ocean. I'm
- 29:42Speaker 4: using my hands to build.
- 29:44Speaker 2: I thought you were saying. I thought you were saying
- 29:46Speaker 2: he had the body of Pat Marita, and I was like, no,
- 29:48Speaker 2: he does not.
- 29:50Speaker 4: But when Sammy wax On wax off.
- 29:53Speaker 3: The first time we see Sammy, he's got that hand
- 29:55Speaker 3: over his head and then the button on the scene
- 29:58Speaker 3: with Judy is he could was careful.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I've been hurt before. Yeah, Oh my god, he dropped me,
- 30:04Speaker 1: drop me.
- 30:05Speaker 2: He loves Judy, he loves Carla, he loves car.
- 30:07Speaker 4: She hugs him and he's like, don't let go.
- 30:10Speaker 3: And for those and well that's later on and for
- 30:13Speaker 3: those who don't know asides, when you keep it aside real,
- 30:17Speaker 3: it's almost impossible because if you don't do it right,
- 30:21Speaker 3: you come off as a crazy person because you're talking
- 30:24Speaker 3: to yourself.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And Sammy does it with careful I've been hurt before.
- 30:28Speaker 3: And then when he and Judy get back together later on,
- 30:30Speaker 3: he has two that are genius. He says, she knows,
- 30:35Speaker 3: she knows your name, he says to himself, and then
- 30:39Speaker 3: he says, don't let go.
- 30:43Speaker 1: It dropped me. And I can't tell you how hard that.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Yeah, he has one more when he's like, I love
- 30:49Speaker 4: you and she turns around like what, and.
- 30:51Speaker 1: He goes right back to the song.
- 30:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but that song you got, I mean, we're jumping
- 30:56Speaker 2: all over the place, but that song moment was so
- 30:59Speaker 2: beautiful and I forget. I apologize to the universe that
- 31:02Speaker 2: I forgot how pretty Judy's voice is me too, Yeah,
- 31:06Speaker 2: and she slays and it's beautiful. And their harmonies, I mean, Sammy.
- 31:10Speaker 2: We knew because sam was an amazing singer and it
- 31:13Speaker 2: was an a cappella group, but the two of them together,
- 31:15Speaker 2: their harmonies were I got goosebumps all over my body.
- 31:18Speaker 1: Yeah, now let me ask you something, uh Zachi? Yes?
- 31:22Speaker 1: And I could see you. I could see you ringing
- 31:24Speaker 1: this one out as hard as you could. Was this
- 31:27Speaker 1: Billy or you on beer's beakers?
- 31:30Speaker 2: It's probably me.
- 31:32Speaker 1: You were ringing everything.
- 31:35Speaker 3: I know.
- 31:35Speaker 2: There's certain is there certains, there's just funny beakers. I
- 31:41Speaker 2: think I think it was probably not in the script
- 31:44Speaker 2: because that wouldn't probably been funny on the page. But
- 31:47Speaker 2: I was probably just riffing like words that sounded funny.
- 31:51Speaker 2: And we should say it's the first appearance of Franklin
- 31:53Speaker 2: played by masi Oka.
- 31:54Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm about to say Massi oh. Before he went
- 31:57Speaker 5: on to be a time traveling star of.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Heroes, right, he was the star of the show Heroes. Yeah,
- 32:04Speaker 2: and I think this was his first juicy gig. He
- 32:08Speaker 2: recurred as Franklin for a while.
- 32:10Speaker 1: He's very he's very good.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he was funny. Hugging is hugging his favorite microscope
- 32:15Speaker 2: so that you didn't destroy it.
- 32:18Speaker 3: And then and then at eight minutes we go to
- 32:20Speaker 3: what I referenced earlier is Sarah and Donald, and it's
- 32:24Speaker 3: it's what I started this whole thing off with with. However,
- 32:26Speaker 3: this ensemble jeld, whether it was just time or traveling
- 32:31Speaker 3: together and getting into it, you guys are effortless.
- 32:35Speaker 2: All right, but let's go a little bit back. Johnny,
- 32:37Speaker 2: you're going too fast. First of all, oh, dear Lord,
- 32:40Speaker 2: please tell me that's not a onesie.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Oh god.
- 32:45Speaker 2: And now doctor Cox says, first of all, I'm wearing
- 32:48Speaker 2: a onesie, which I love a onesie. I don't wear
- 32:51Speaker 2: a onesie to bed, but man, when I have a
- 32:52Speaker 2: onesie on do I love a onesie? And I guess
- 32:56Speaker 2: JD really loved one because he wears it to the bar.
- 33:00Speaker 2: And then and then Cox pulls over the two ladies
- 33:02Speaker 2: to flirt.
- 33:03Speaker 4: Okay, before you go past what I have.
- 33:05Speaker 1: But that's that's at eleven eight. I'm gonna I'm gonna eight.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I know, I'm I'm I'm the ones He occurs at
- 33:11Speaker 2: seven oh six. Oh okay, now, but go ahead, Donald.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Uh minty. First of all, what were y' all drinking
- 33:19Speaker 4: in your shots.
- 33:20Speaker 2: If that was minty, No, the the the toothbrush was minty.
- 33:24Speaker 4: Oh still from the after you dipped it in the.
- 33:27Speaker 2: I don't know, it doesn't track. I guess you're right
- 33:28Speaker 2: because the toothpaste would have been off of it.
- 33:30Speaker 4: But that's it was hilarious because and then right after that, yuck, yuck, yuck.
- 33:35Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know what I was thinking of. Do
- 33:37Speaker 2: you remember do you remember I don't know if you
- 33:39Speaker 2: remember this, Donald, but don Johnny, you definitely remember Easy
- 33:41Speaker 2: Rider when uh, whenever Nicholson would do a shot, he
- 33:46Speaker 2: would he would just say a random word because.
- 33:49Speaker 4: The shot was so bad.
- 33:50Speaker 2: An easy Rider. He'd do the shot and he goes,
- 33:53Speaker 2: but he would say like a random word that would
- 33:55Speaker 2: like help him recover from how bad the shot was.
- 33:58Speaker 2: And that's that's what I was thinking of when I
- 34:00Speaker 2: when I when I did it, I was like, yuck,
- 34:05Speaker 2: trying so hard to be manly in front of Cox,
- 34:08Speaker 2: but I'm in a onesie with a toothbrush.
- 34:11Speaker 3: It was funny when you go yucky and then the
- 34:12Speaker 3: writers give Cox, uh, oh great, I'm drinking with a
- 34:15Speaker 3: mouseket deer.
- 34:18Speaker 5: Like I said, I didn't remember this episode at all,
- 34:20Speaker 5: so I never knew that you guys had a wingman
- 34:23Speaker 5: uh situation going on the two of you.
- 34:26Speaker 4: What happened?
- 34:27Speaker 5: I know that one girl blows it because she's talking
- 34:29Speaker 5: about her ex boyfriend. What happened to the girl you
- 34:33Speaker 5: were talking to?
- 34:34Speaker 2: Well, I don't think Cox has gives a flying fuck about.
- 34:38Speaker 2: He's just like here, if this, if she? Cox is
- 34:40Speaker 2: like here you want you want a reason to stay here?
- 34:42Speaker 2: Talk to these girls. I'm gonna I'm gonna, I'm gonna go.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And then JD is like, okay, now you're telling and
- 34:48Speaker 2: he tries to hit on that one woman, but she's just,
- 34:50Speaker 2: you know, rambling and rambling and rambling.
- 34:52Speaker 1: The hangman's noose is.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's kind of it's kind of stolen from airplane.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Though it doesn't matter, no, but he remembers the airplane.
- 35:01Speaker 3: It's absolutely hilarious. I remember, I know we're dinosaurs.
- 35:07Speaker 2: No, but I think there's a scene in a moment
- 35:09Speaker 2: an airplane when someone's doing a long speech about their
- 35:12Speaker 2: past and and you you cut back and the passenger
- 35:15Speaker 2: next to him has hung himself and he's swinging anyway.
- 35:19Speaker 3: I think it's really interesting. After the two girls leave
- 35:23Speaker 3: and JD and Cox are alone. I don't remember Cox
- 35:26Speaker 3: being that broken.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Yeah, that's what I was going to say. He's so broken, dude,
- 35:31Speaker 4: he's so broken.
- 35:32Speaker 2: Well, it's like once a year he you know, Carla says,
- 35:35Speaker 2: like once a year he pretty much has a breakdown.
- 35:38Speaker 1: And I went back and I went back.
- 35:40Speaker 3: As I told you guys, I keep composition books and
- 35:43Speaker 3: it's kind of how I learned my lines. And in
- 35:45Speaker 3: the margins I wrote notes to myself, and in that
- 35:49Speaker 3: I the first thing gig I'll digress for a second.
- 35:52Speaker 3: The first gig I got to get at n YU
- 35:54Speaker 3: was to understudy John Tatro in Danny and the Deep
- 35:56Speaker 3: Blue Sea and over ats Circle Rep, which was maybe
- 36:00Speaker 3: I lived on Sullivan Street and Circle was on Bleakers,
- 36:04Speaker 3: so it was maybe a half a block from my house,
- 36:06Speaker 3: and I understudy John, and I was the assistant stage manager,
- 36:09Speaker 3: so I helped call the lights and I made up
- 36:11Speaker 3: the actors. But I had keys to the theater. And
- 36:13Speaker 3: because it's just a two hand er, two hander means
- 36:15Speaker 3: just two actors on stage, it was June Stein and John,
- 36:19Speaker 3: and John went to do desperately seeking Susan. After about
- 36:22Speaker 3: eight months, he wouldn't he wouldn't it's eight shows a
- 36:24Speaker 3: week off Broadway, and.
- 36:26Speaker 1: He wouldn't go down. It's very violent play, and so
- 36:29Speaker 1: I had the keys to the theater.
- 36:30Speaker 3: So every day I would walk and do circles on
- 36:33Speaker 3: the stage because I had the keys, and I would
- 36:35Speaker 3: do both actors' parts out loud a couple of times
- 36:38Speaker 3: a day.
- 36:39Speaker 1: And this was all fear based, and you.
- 36:41Speaker 2: Were afraid to say, Johnny, you were afraid that you
- 36:43Speaker 2: might have to go on and you didn't want it.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I was scared to death.
- 36:47Speaker 3: And John finally went to go do Desperately Seeking Susan
- 36:52Speaker 3: and which every actor in New York wanted to be in,
- 36:55Speaker 3: and so I got to take over for him for
- 36:57Speaker 3: about a week. And there's a line that Danny has
- 37:01Speaker 3: at the end of the play where he says everything hurts.
- 37:04Speaker 3: And I worked backwards in that play from everything hurts,
- 37:07Speaker 3: and and what that must mean for someone to actually
- 37:10Speaker 3: say that that everything hurts. And I gave it to
- 37:13Speaker 3: Cox in this that when we see him, there's that
- 37:17Speaker 3: long profile shot of Cox that will stays on it
- 37:21Speaker 3: and everything hurts. Yeah, and it resonates and it's nothing said,
- 37:25Speaker 3: it's underneath.
- 37:27Speaker 1: And Zaki's so lovely in the scene. But I just
- 37:29Speaker 1: think the guy's broken.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's so incredibly committed to this job, which
- 37:37Speaker 2: is endlessly frustrating for him, not only what would be
- 37:41Speaker 2: normal dealing with so much death and pain, but that
- 37:44Speaker 2: this hospital, this this hospital that it seems is barely
- 37:49Speaker 2: surviving with with with its finances. And he opens the
- 37:54Speaker 2: episode walking around, and I noticed that Will made sure
- 37:56Speaker 2: that the ceiling panels were all fucked up. I don't
- 37:59Speaker 2: know if you noticed that, but when you when you're
- 38:00Speaker 2: looking around, being like, everything is here is fucking broken.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I'm so sick of it. And in that in that
- 38:04Speaker 2: very walk and talk moment, you're seeing like the ceilings
- 38:07Speaker 2: all fucked up, and and he's just just so frustrated,
- 38:12Speaker 2: I imagine with trying to save lives with no with
- 38:15Speaker 2: no support, with no gear, like so many by the way,
- 38:18Speaker 2: like so many doctors and nurses and people must be
- 38:21Speaker 2: feeling now with the lack of of ppe they had
- 38:25Speaker 2: with with COVID.
- 38:26Speaker 1: I think it's really interested at what you were just referencing.
- 38:29Speaker 3: That the writers don't even have Cocks reference it as
- 38:34Speaker 3: the hospital or or the name of the hospital.
- 38:36Speaker 1: He he just calls it that place. He can't even he.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Doesn't even want it in his mouth, and he says,
- 38:41Speaker 3: I can't, I can't go back to that place.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and then JD at least feels like wow, he
- 38:48Speaker 2: I don't know what to do. He broke down, what
- 38:50Speaker 2: are we going to do? And Carl was like, oh no,
- 38:51Speaker 2: he just does that once a year. He'll be fine today.
- 38:53Speaker 2: And I'm like, there's no way he's going to be fine.
- 38:55Speaker 4: And you come in like, hey, look, it's going to
- 38:59Speaker 4: be a good.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Ill. I stole that from a brother, my brother's friendship. Humph.
- 39:06Speaker 1: You lives in Atlanta now. He used to always go
- 39:08Speaker 1: around and go it's a great day. I put that
- 39:13Speaker 1: one right in my back pocket.
- 39:15Speaker 2: You were so funny. All right, Wait, yes, we're gonna
- 39:18Speaker 2: take a break. We always forget because we're having so
- 39:20Speaker 2: much fun. We'll be right back and see Donald, you're
- 39:34Speaker 2: giving the people what they want, which is the mm hmm.
- 39:36Speaker 4: They asked for it, so I might as well give
- 39:39Speaker 4: it to him.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Man.
- 39:39Speaker 2: A lot of chatter, a lot of chatter on we
- 39:41Speaker 2: gotta just digress for a moment. So much chatter on
- 39:44Speaker 2: it on Instagram about this, about the washcloth conversation.
- 39:47Speaker 4: Well, that was a conversation that was real deal, Holy Field, man.
- 39:50Speaker 2: Johnny, did you do you use a washcloth in the shower?
- 39:53Speaker 5: We need to know if my wife wanted to make
- 39:55Speaker 5: sure that before we get into Johnny using the washcloth,
- 39:57Speaker 5: she wanted you guys all to know that you are
- 40:01Speaker 5: supposed to get rid of the washcloth after he.
- 40:04Speaker 4: Shouts at that one time right period. But you don't,
- 40:09Speaker 4: I do what you don't? You don't.
- 40:12Speaker 2: Your wife was like, you better fucking tell him we
- 40:14Speaker 2: changed the wash cloth. There are too many fucking people
- 40:18Speaker 2: listen to this podcast. Donald, you better tell them we
- 40:21Speaker 2: change the wash cloth.
- 40:22Speaker 5: I'm telling you right I'm telling you right now, we
- 40:24Speaker 5: changed the wash cloths.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Baby, I told everybody.
- 40:28Speaker 2: See, I told everybody.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Baby taken care of. It's not like she listens to
- 40:31Speaker 4: the show anyway.
- 40:32Speaker 2: If you want, we can have Dan go back and
- 40:34Speaker 2: re edit that that sentence into the original wash.
- 40:37Speaker 1: Cloth to be okay, okay, Jesus was funny.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Well, I just want you to know that. You know,
- 40:42Speaker 2: in one in that episode, we were talking about both
- 40:45Speaker 2: what kind of merch we should have and the washcloth
- 40:47Speaker 2: to be. And so now my whole Instagram fee was like,
- 40:49Speaker 2: how about merch that says team washcloth on a wash cloth.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I love it.
- 40:59Speaker 4: So some, he said, And now look man, if not
- 41:02Speaker 4: look man, if you know me, this is how I am.
- 41:07Speaker 5: But listen, I accumulate a lot of spit in my
- 41:10Speaker 5: mouth when I talk, so sometimes I might when I'm talking. Listen, asshole,
- 41:18Speaker 5: that's how I talk. All right, accept it. I just
- 41:21Speaker 5: did it again.
- 41:22Speaker 4: And if you got a problem with it, you can
- 41:25Speaker 4: kiss my ass all right?
- 41:27Speaker 3: Of course maybe of course for for avid listards begs
- 41:31Speaker 3: the question which instructor?
- 41:32Speaker 1: Did Donald have no yes, because he just went into
- 41:36Speaker 1: aggressive guy.
- 41:37Speaker 2: You are right, Johnny, good call.
- 41:39Speaker 5: You know I need to protect how I sound on
- 41:41Speaker 5: this thing. Everybody had a problem with me saying you
- 41:43Speaker 5: know what I mean? And now somebody's talking about the
- 41:46Speaker 5: way I slurp when I'm done the sentences.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Slurp by the way, slurp by the way. You know
- 41:53Speaker 2: they have those fancy spit guards for the mic. We
- 41:56Speaker 2: could get you, right, Dan, we can. You know, there's
- 41:57Speaker 2: like a little circle that goes in front of the mic,
- 41:59Speaker 2: so you have to be.
- 42:00Speaker 4: Spitting the house. I don't need to do any of.
- 42:02Speaker 2: It, all right, Well, why don't you reach behind you
- 42:04Speaker 2: and dab your mouth with some sweatpants.
- 42:08Speaker 4: Fuck you, fuck you.
- 42:18Speaker 2: Well anyway, it's just fun to see that so many
- 42:20Speaker 2: people are engaging, and we love to hear from you,
- 42:23Speaker 2: especially when it's debating things. We're debating here because I
- 42:26Speaker 2: love seeing people weigh in and be like, I'm team
- 42:28Speaker 2: washcloth and I'm from the South.
- 42:30Speaker 5: I was about to say, right right, Well, a lot
- 42:32Speaker 5: of white people that got on the on the thing like, yo,
- 42:36Speaker 5: I do use a washcloth, but I am from the South.
- 42:39Speaker 2: So and then some women won't be like Zach, you
- 42:42Speaker 2: can put a loofa between your cheeks, you just have
- 42:44Speaker 2: to make sure you wash it. They're washable, and I'm not.
- 42:47Speaker 2: I'm still not gonna put a scratchyof loof of between
- 42:50Speaker 2: the cheeks.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Johnny, are you team washcloth or team no washcloth.
- 42:54Speaker 1: It's funny. I use washcloths at hotels, but not at home.
- 42:59Speaker 3: But not at home both, I just surf. I just
- 43:01Speaker 3: I just there's a shower I put in outside the building,
- 43:04Speaker 3: and I just shower out there.
- 43:05Speaker 1: And so no, there's no wash cloths up theah.
- 43:08Speaker 4: But in hotels you use the washcloths.
- 43:10Speaker 2: You know, you know why he does because he doesn't
- 43:13Speaker 2: have to worry about cleaning that fucking poo poo stain up.
- 43:18Speaker 4: That also is a problem for me, Zach, I have
- 43:20Speaker 4: a problem with your poostain story.
- 43:22Speaker 2: Now why why dude, You're rehashing some shit right now?
- 43:25Speaker 2: No pun intended.
- 43:26Speaker 1: Do you have itchy all day?
- 43:28Speaker 4: Hold on, do you have itchy butt all the time?
- 43:31Speaker 1: No?
- 43:31Speaker 2: You still don't understand what I'm saying.
- 43:32Speaker 4: There's no way, dude, I do understand what you're saying.
- 43:35Speaker 2: I don't have poo. If I were to swipe the
- 43:38Speaker 2: washcloth down the outside of my balloon knot, there'd be
- 43:41Speaker 2: no poo on it. But if I were to dig
- 43:44Speaker 2: a quarter inch, there'd be some remnants.
- 43:47Speaker 4: Why are you digging in your ass?
- 43:49Speaker 2: Because that's what I feel. The purpose of the washcloth is.
- 43:52Speaker 2: I have a washcloth as my interface between me and
- 43:56Speaker 2: my rectum, and I can dig a little. I can
- 43:58Speaker 2: be aggressive. Check my pros nate while I'm in there.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Do you guys not have the magic toilet seat that
- 44:03Speaker 1: does the spray I.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Wish I had.
- 44:06Speaker 2: I'm gonna get you one of those. It's a seat.
- 44:08Speaker 1: It's a seat. You put a seat. It's not even
- 44:10Speaker 1: a day it's the most genius thing on the planet. Yeah,
- 44:13Speaker 1: we got him. We got them at the Design Center
- 44:15Speaker 1: at some invited event that Yeah.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it just blasts a little. It's like a it's
- 44:19Speaker 2: like a water pick for your anus.
- 44:21Speaker 1: It's the single greatest gift on the planet.
- 44:23Speaker 2: It's lovely. Donald. I'm gonna get you one for Honkah
- 44:25Speaker 2: can't wait.
- 44:26Speaker 3: Well, what you have to get him with with is
- 44:29Speaker 3: you also get a contractor to extend a water outlet
- 44:32Speaker 3: and electricity to.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Oh that's not coming with my honica. Well maybe that'll
- 44:34Speaker 2: be the second night. The first night will be the
- 44:36Speaker 2: water pick for your anus. Second night contractor?
- 44:45Speaker 1: Could we could we get back to Levern?
- 44:48Speaker 2: Welcome, Welcome back, Johnny, Johnny, Johnny. This is what happens, uh.
- 44:54Speaker 2: I know, by the way, when you're into you guys,
- 44:56Speaker 2: when you're here, we can I love that Johnny's already
- 44:58Speaker 2: here being like, can we get to the episode? Which
- 45:01Speaker 2: is what I'm the one. I'm the one who's always saying.
- 45:03Speaker 4: That we tried to digress several times, and Donny's like,
- 45:06Speaker 4: but you know when yeah, six so too.
- 45:09Speaker 1: I wanted to do all right, let's I thought in
- 45:12Speaker 1: twelve fifty two. I thought Billy Billy likes to take
- 45:16Speaker 1: a swipe at Zachi every once in a while. He
- 45:18Speaker 1: always has and and he Laverne says, you think so
- 45:23Speaker 1: with those ears, And it's just and it's just exact totally.
- 45:28Speaker 2: I'm called for so fucked up. I must have done
- 45:30Speaker 2: something that week that he wanted to take me down
- 45:32Speaker 2: a notge for I never really had my ears this before.
- 45:35Speaker 2: I mean, obviously I have a large nose, and I'm used,
- 45:39Speaker 2: you know, anytime a caricature artist would draw me, it
- 45:42Speaker 2: would be like ninety five percent nose, So I'm used
- 45:45Speaker 2: to that. But I I never really had my ears
- 45:48Speaker 2: disc before before Nurse Roberts went after them.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yeah, she and she took She took no small amount
- 45:54Speaker 1: of pleasure in doing it too.
- 45:55Speaker 3: No.
- 45:56Speaker 2: Red Dawn fifteen forty. I've never seen Red Dawn. I
- 45:58Speaker 2: don't know anything about her.
- 45:59Speaker 4: You fucking kidding me right now. You've never seen Red Dawn.
- 46:01Speaker 1: No?
- 46:02Speaker 4: Did you audition John Leis?
- 46:05Speaker 1: No? I didn't. I wouldn't up to that speed yet.
- 46:08Speaker 4: Well there's a part in that. Well, you're probably you're
- 46:10Speaker 4: probably way too young.
- 46:11Speaker 2: I have no idea what wolverines means. Please tell us.
- 46:14Speaker 5: Okay, so, uh, the Russians in Red Dawn, Yeah, attack America.
- 46:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Colorado. The trivia our trivia friend says, there's a
- 46:23Speaker 2: mistake in the episode. One of you guys says, Michigan,
- 46:26Speaker 2: but it's actually Colorado.
- 46:27Speaker 5: Yeah, because the Michigan. Because the Michigan Michigan or the Wolverines.
- 46:31Speaker 5: The college team Michigan are the Wolverines. But it actually
- 46:34Speaker 5: takes place in Colorado. You're right, and they attack and kids,
- 46:38Speaker 5: students are the rebellion. They wind up being like all
- 46:42Speaker 5: the adults are gathered and put into concentration camps and Stanton. Yeah,
- 46:47Speaker 5: see Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen.
- 46:51Speaker 2: Uh does it hold up?
- 46:53Speaker 5: I mean they tried to. They tried to remake it
- 46:55Speaker 5: and stuff like that. The action is amazing.
- 46:58Speaker 4: Who's the the older brother? Oh my gosh, Ghost.
- 47:01Speaker 1: Well, Patrick Patrick.
- 47:03Speaker 4: Crazy, Patrick swayze Just so many people are in it.
- 47:06Speaker 3: Uh.
- 47:07Speaker 5: This is the first movie that Jennifer Gray and Patrick
- 47:09Speaker 5: swayzey did together. This is before Dirty Dancing.
- 47:12Speaker 1: And Leah Thompson.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Leah Thompson's in it. Also a lot of people went
- 47:17Speaker 4: on to do.
- 47:19Speaker 1: It.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Makes me think of another before you explain that more Taps.
- 47:22Speaker 2: We were talking about Taps the other Do you guys
- 47:24Speaker 2: remember that.
- 47:26Speaker 3: A lot of George Valley Forge Military Academy.
- 47:30Speaker 2: Yeah, and a lot of amazing actors. It was their
- 47:32Speaker 2: first big thing, Sewn Sean and Tom Cruise.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 47:37Speaker 2: But anyway, go back to the plot of Loverne.
- 47:39Speaker 5: So the kids, the kids, and the and the school
- 47:43Speaker 5: that the kids they're all like on the football team
- 47:45Speaker 5: and stuff like that. And the football team of the
- 47:47Speaker 5: school is called the Wolverines. And so when they're when
- 47:51Speaker 5: they're in the fight with the Russians, their victory cry
- 47:56Speaker 5: is Wolverines. Their battle cry is Wolverines. Like you know,
- 48:00Speaker 5: g I Joe was Yo Joe.
- 48:02Speaker 4: Theirs was Wolverines.
- 48:05Speaker 2: Okay, got it. And in the world of Scrubs, Elliott
- 48:08Speaker 2: knows this movie. I don't believe it, but I believe
- 48:10Speaker 2: I believe. I believe Turk knows it.
- 48:13Speaker 4: I don't believe Turk would know it, so therefore j
- 48:15Speaker 4: D would know it, right.
- 48:16Speaker 2: But Elliott walks in like, oh, I forget the homework assignment,
- 48:19Speaker 2: Let's watch Red Dawn. I'm like, come on, buddy, I'd
- 48:22Speaker 2: love it.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's also great again, you guys both throw
- 48:25Speaker 3: the gesture away and it's great when Zachi comes in
- 48:28Speaker 3: and goes, you know, wolverines and he just throws it
- 48:30Speaker 3: away and Sarah does too, and it's great.
- 48:32Speaker 2: You know, when I was first watching this episode, before
- 48:34Speaker 2: I got through it, I was like, what a dick
- 48:36Speaker 2: Turk is for inviting my newly ex girlfriend over to
- 48:40Speaker 2: do a homework as Simon at the fucking living room table.
- 48:44Speaker 4: But he knew done.
- 48:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but then he comes yeah, there's a great thing.
- 48:50Speaker 3: Later on at ten forty five that Donald does this
- 48:54Speaker 3: great thing where Sarah goes, you and I can still
- 48:57Speaker 3: hang out and Donald goes, no, he's my best friend.
- 49:00Speaker 1: Either you fix it or and then there's an ellipsis.
- 49:03Speaker 1: And for all of us who have had divorced friends
- 49:07Speaker 1: or friends who have broken up, it's the way Donald
- 49:11Speaker 1: lays it out. You can't have both. It's just it's
- 49:14Speaker 1: never you got to be friends with either or the wife.
- 49:18Speaker 1: You can't have both. It doesn't work.
- 49:20Speaker 2: People always choose a side, don't they.
- 49:23Speaker 5: You have to Yeah, yeah, there's no in between. You
- 49:26Speaker 5: can't stay in between. You can't be like she's my
- 49:28Speaker 5: friend and you're my friend.
- 49:30Speaker 2: Right right, I got it? Now now now when so
- 49:34Speaker 2: we what we learned is that Turk did it in
- 49:36Speaker 2: order to try and get them to be friends again.
- 49:40Speaker 1: Right, well, I think his intentions are really good.
- 49:44Speaker 2: But it's so raw. I mean, it's still so new,
- 49:46Speaker 2: this breakup. You know, It's like, yeah, but you guys.
- 49:48Speaker 5: Are running to each running into each other. Elliott and
- 49:52Speaker 5: j D are running into each other every day at work,
- 49:55Speaker 5: and there's all of this animosity towards each other.
- 49:59Speaker 1: It's how the show will.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I felt sad about it, you know, I have to say,
- 50:03Speaker 2: I guess I'm these old feelings of being so invested
- 50:06Speaker 2: in these characters came up, and of course, I'm sure
- 50:10Speaker 2: you know memories of times in my own life of
- 50:13Speaker 2: this stage of a relationship, and I don't know, I
- 50:16Speaker 2: was so invested that I genuinely was feeling sad for
- 50:20Speaker 2: these two characters and how they clearly love each other
- 50:23Speaker 2: so much, and as we learned in the series, they
- 50:25Speaker 2: ultimately choose each other. But but oh, that awkwardness of
- 50:29Speaker 2: of you know, of trying to be friends and having
- 50:33Speaker 2: mutual friends and working together. I mean, what a nightmare.
- 50:36Speaker 3: Yeah, but what you just said pays off in the
- 50:38Speaker 3: final before you guys go up on the roof and
- 50:40Speaker 3: throw watermelons. When you guys are on that cot, you're Zachi.
- 50:45Speaker 3: Your truth is that it made you genuinely sad and
- 50:51Speaker 3: it resonates. It absolutely jumps into the lens and it resonates,
- 50:55Speaker 3: and it's so lovely.
- 50:57Speaker 2: I think I had not so much.
- 50:58Speaker 1: There's nothing demand instrative, there's nothing showy. It's just this
- 51:03Speaker 1: guy sad and sad sucks. Sometimes.
- 51:05Speaker 2: I think that was easy to play because it was real,
- 51:08Speaker 2: and I think I had so much love for Sarah
- 51:10Speaker 2: and I just, you know, I could just play in
- 51:14Speaker 2: my in my heart that we weren't going to be
- 51:17Speaker 2: friends anymore, and it was just easy to tap into.
- 51:19Speaker 1: You know, right he should it showed.
- 51:22Speaker 4: It was very good.
- 51:24Speaker 5: I really you know, when in the beginning of the
- 51:26Speaker 5: episode when he said when j D says, my teacher died,
- 51:31Speaker 5: I was like, oh, this is this is going to
- 51:33Speaker 5: be the problem of the episode. And then when you know, Johnny,
- 51:36Speaker 5: when Cox goes into this rent, I was like, no,
- 51:38Speaker 5: this is the problem of the episode. Then how you
- 51:41Speaker 5: bring it full circle? It's always brought back to one
- 51:43Speaker 5: right and with our show, so at the end of
- 51:46Speaker 5: it all, you remind him, didn't you tell me about
- 51:49Speaker 5: your teacher that you know just passed away.
- 51:51Speaker 4: How are you gonna deal with that? Because I know
- 51:54Speaker 4: you're trying to hide it. What did you do when?
- 51:56Speaker 4: What did you do when you found out your teacher died?
- 52:00Speaker 4: That's right, you made a joke.
- 52:01Speaker 5: That shit stings inside and if you hold on to it,
- 52:04Speaker 5: and if you don't have an outlet, you wind up
- 52:06Speaker 5: doing what I did.
- 52:07Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 52:08Speaker 5: And there's not a bunch of people at this hospital
- 52:10Speaker 5: that are going to protect you the way they protect me.
- 52:12Speaker 4: That's that's the honest of goodness truth. Yeah, we'll get
- 52:15Speaker 4: this shit out.
- 52:16Speaker 2: You know, I was well said. I believe that too.
- 52:18Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like I do that in life.
- 52:20Speaker 2: I try and dissipate the emotion by making a joke
- 52:25Speaker 2: and then you're all, you know, which is fine, it's
- 52:27Speaker 2: a coping mechanism. But then you're letting that shit fester
- 52:30Speaker 2: and build up. And then Johnny and Cox is saying, like,
- 52:34Speaker 2: look what happens if you let it build for three
- 52:36Speaker 2: hundred and sixty four days? You fucking destroy Franklin's lab.
- 52:40Speaker 3: And I wrote, I wrote, I wrote in my notebook
- 52:43Speaker 3: because I'd had about a twenty year ongoing twenty year
- 52:48Speaker 3: art crush on a Welsh poet named Dylan Thomas.
- 52:51Speaker 1: And I didn't have the spine to go down to
- 52:54Speaker 1: the writer's room.
- 52:55Speaker 3: And ask Billy if I could put this in, But
- 52:57Speaker 3: I did put it in the margins, the poem that
- 53:00Speaker 3: do not go gently into that good night rage, rage
- 53:03Speaker 3: against the.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Dying of the light.
- 53:04Speaker 3: And that informs everything I'm telling Zachi in that scene,
- 53:08Speaker 3: that you don't go gently into the good night rage, rage,
- 53:12Speaker 3: rage against the dying of the light.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Oh, I get it. And I wanted to say it
- 53:16Speaker 1: to Zachie so bad, but it was a little too esoteric.
- 53:20Speaker 1: But it's underneath it.
- 53:21Speaker 2: It needs to, John, because it was underneath your whole performance.
- 53:24Speaker 1: If it floats it Yeah.
- 53:25Speaker 3: And if you can get Dylan Thomas to float something
- 53:28Speaker 3: underneath what you're doing again, you're not lying, you're telling
- 53:32Speaker 3: your truth.
- 53:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:33Speaker 2: I really like that you do that, John, the putting,
- 53:37Speaker 2: putting thoughts and inspiration in the margins and letting that
- 53:42Speaker 2: sort of exist underneath the scene. I think that's really
- 53:46Speaker 2: a smart technique.
- 53:48Speaker 1: It's completely selfish and self serving. It helps me.
- 53:51Speaker 3: I always find that if you can since we're lying
- 53:54Speaker 3: in front of the lens. Everything most of it's a lie.
- 53:57Speaker 3: In other words, I'm not doctor Cox, I'm not the guy.
- 54:00Speaker 3: I'm not Sergeant O Neil in platoon. I'm not I'm
- 54:03Speaker 3: not I'm some guy. I'm just the Irish jack.
- 54:06Speaker 1: Yes.
- 54:06Speaker 3: And if you can, yeah, if you can reduce, if
- 54:10Speaker 3: you can reduce the frequency of the lie, whether it's
- 54:14Speaker 3: Oliver putting this through two weeks of boot camp or
- 54:17Speaker 3: or putting Dylan Thomas underneath underneath a particular beat that
- 54:22Speaker 3: reduces the lie. And if you can reduce the lie
- 54:25Speaker 3: to a certain frequency, then the lens doesn't suffer it
- 54:30Speaker 3: as a lie quite as much.
- 54:31Speaker 2: And I think, and I think genuinely this might be
- 54:33Speaker 2: a non sequitor, but for me, genuinely listen. You know
- 54:38Speaker 2: a lot of times actors will ask me for and
- 54:41Speaker 2: I'm sure this you guys get this as well. Young
- 54:43Speaker 2: actors ask you for advice or or and you try
- 54:46Speaker 2: and think of like something's a sinc you can say,
- 54:48Speaker 2: because it's none of it's that easy. But when I
- 54:51Speaker 2: do try and say, the most basic thing that I've
- 54:53Speaker 2: learned is genuinely listening. If I'm if the camera's on
- 54:59Speaker 2: me and Johnny c playing Cox is saying all these
- 55:02Speaker 2: things to me, and I can genuinely listen. I'm not
- 55:05Speaker 2: looking in my periphery at the camera. I'm not looking
- 55:07Speaker 2: at the jail on the light that's about to fall.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I'm not distracted by something. I'm genuinely listening. Then I
- 55:14Speaker 2: can't help but react naturally as a human being would. Now,
- 55:18Speaker 2: that's not easy to do it. You can only I
- 55:21Speaker 2: find I can only do it in spurts, which hopefully
- 55:24Speaker 2: those spurts can be edited together into something good. But
- 55:28Speaker 2: that's the that's sort of my version of what you're
- 55:30Speaker 2: saying is being as present as you can and genuinely.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Listening because you're telling the truth.
- 55:37Speaker 2: Yeah, and then we react. I remember when I was
- 55:39Speaker 2: I did this movie, The Last Kiss, and I was
- 55:41Speaker 2: I had a scene with Tom Wilkinson, a wonderful actor,
- 55:43Speaker 2: and it was one of those moments where this really
- 55:45Speaker 2: worked for me. He was the cameras were kind of
- 55:47Speaker 2: far back. I love that when when on the occasion
- 55:50Speaker 2: when they can be sort of a little bit far
- 55:51Speaker 2: away on longer lenses. And he's too and he was
- 55:54Speaker 2: just on the porch and he's giving me a speech
- 55:58Speaker 2: about his daughter, and I just remember being so present.
- 56:02Speaker 2: I didn't see the cameras. I just saw this man
- 56:05Speaker 2: talking to me and giving me advice about how to
- 56:07Speaker 2: deal with my troubled relationship. And I just felt I
- 56:11Speaker 2: was so in the moment that in spurts, I was
- 56:14Speaker 2: able to just forget that it wasn't real, you know
- 56:17Speaker 2: what I mean.
- 56:18Speaker 5: No, I totally know what to me when I did
- 56:19Speaker 5: Gee's Tripping. I got stone with my boy Dion right.
- 56:23Speaker 4: Before I seen.
- 56:29Speaker 2: When I was in Homies Pomoni.
- 56:33Speaker 5: Oh, and there was you know, we were at a
- 56:37Speaker 5: dance at a house party, and I was supposed to
- 56:39Speaker 5: be dancing with this girl at the house party, and
- 56:42Speaker 5: I was so stone that I forgot we were filming
- 56:44Speaker 5: the damn movie. You think this is bullshit, but I
- 56:47Speaker 5: remembered my direction was.
- 56:49Speaker 2: I thought you were by the way. I just want
- 56:50Speaker 2: to stop for a second. I thought you were kidding
- 56:52Speaker 2: and it was hilarious, but you're serious. You got so
- 56:54Speaker 2: high you forgot you were doing a movie.
- 56:55Speaker 5: I forgot that we were making This is how I
- 56:59Speaker 5: gotta see this movie. Yeah, so we're in a scene
- 57:03Speaker 5: and we're you know, it's a house party, and we're dancing,
- 57:06Speaker 5: and I'm dancing with this girl, and I remembered my direction.
- 57:10Speaker 5: My direction is tell her to come with you and
- 57:13Speaker 5: you guys exit. So we're dancing and everything, and now
- 57:16Speaker 5: I'm really fucking in it. I'm looking around at the
- 57:18Speaker 5: boys and shit, oh you know what I mean. I'm
- 57:23Speaker 5: waving to my boy you know what I mean in
- 57:25Speaker 5: the movie and everything like that, and I remember Joe, oh,
- 57:29Speaker 5: I'm supposed to tell us something. So I whispered in
- 57:31Speaker 5: the ear like, yo, let's go to the other room.
- 57:33Speaker 5: And she goes, okay, let's go. And so we're exiting,
- 57:37Speaker 5: and as I'm walking out, I'm like, oh shit, I
- 57:39Speaker 5: just pulled down.
- 57:42Speaker 4: I'm what I did, you know what I mean? And
- 57:45Speaker 4: I'm looking at my boys like look how I did it?
- 57:49Speaker 4: And then they said cut and I was like, oh no,
- 57:53Speaker 4: I didn't.
- 57:53Speaker 5: I didn't, but you know, I didn't go like we
- 57:55Speaker 5: were making a movie, but it was like cut and
- 57:57Speaker 5: we walked away and my boy.
- 57:58Speaker 4: Was like, yo, it really like you was taken out
- 58:01Speaker 4: of the other room.
- 58:03Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's so funny.
- 58:07Speaker 1: Man. So that would get me. I would get hives
- 58:10Speaker 1: if I ever found myself in that situation. I would
- 58:13Speaker 1: I worry too much.
- 58:15Speaker 2: How often how often were you stoned while acting on Scrubs?
- 58:21Speaker 2: A percentage of the time.
- 58:23Speaker 4: It's not It's not as high.
- 58:24Speaker 2: I got to add it to the Scrubs Wiki.
- 58:26Speaker 5: It's not as high as everybody, you know, as I
- 58:29Speaker 5: made it out to be. But there were times where
- 58:32Speaker 5: I came to work and I was like, fuck, I
- 58:36Speaker 5: did it in the morning.
- 58:37Speaker 4: By the end of the day, I'll be fine, dude.
- 58:40Speaker 4: I was probably I had a problem.
- 58:42Speaker 2: You know'll be funny if on the Scrubs Wiki with
- 58:44Speaker 2: each episode it has a little section where it says
- 58:47Speaker 2: how high Donald was during the filming of this episode.
- 58:50Speaker 2: You know, it has like a it has like a
- 58:52Speaker 2: red for very, there's like a there's like a there's
- 58:54Speaker 2: like a color system like how dangerous the water is
- 58:56Speaker 2: at the beach.
- 58:57Speaker 4: Those those days are over, though, Those days over.
- 59:00Speaker 5: But I do remember I remember thinking, you know, there's
- 59:03Speaker 5: so many actors that are baked when they're working. And
- 59:05Speaker 5: I'm sure there are there are, you know what I mean,
- 59:08Speaker 5: But it really wasn't for me.
- 59:10Speaker 1: Let me tell you something. I'm gonna get us back
- 59:12Speaker 1: on track here at AIX.
- 59:13Speaker 2: Johnny Johnny, if Johnny was always on the show, we'd
- 59:17Speaker 2: be much more on track.
- 59:19Speaker 1: Let me tell you, Let me tell you something.
- 59:21Speaker 3: The Todd shows up in eight oh six hilarious, and
- 59:24Speaker 3: he comes up from behind the couch.
- 59:25Speaker 1: And it's kind of creepy. Yeah, it's a little creepy.
- 59:29Speaker 4: The things he says to her are creepy.
- 59:31Speaker 1: It's a little creepy, I know.
- 59:34Speaker 2: But I laughed out loud when he said he goes.
- 59:43Speaker 3: So is it safe to assume Donald that at a
- 59:45Speaker 3: fifty six, when you do a very graceful jump up
- 59:48Speaker 3: onto the nurses station, that you are not, in fact
- 59:51Speaker 3: wearing silk boxers.
- 59:52Speaker 4: I am definitely not wearing silkboxers.
- 59:55Speaker 1: Do you wear do you wear anything out of your scrubs?
- 59:57Speaker 4: I did at the time because I was look man,
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: he had a leak.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I got a leaky o ring and loose gasket.
- 1:00:06Speaker 5: Sometimes when you go to the bathroom and come back
- 1:00:08Speaker 5: and you got a little peace spot, it's embarrassing.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: So I don't think that you could. I mean, I
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: don't think that it would be appropriate for you to
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: not have your your what your situation contained.
- 1:00:20Speaker 5: I'm sure there were people that put on their scrubs
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: at as Johnny's hand goes.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Un you free ball in your scrubs.
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: Do One time in the Philippines, we were we were
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: shooting a flick and during boot camp, I had to
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: go through u a river is called a blue, and
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: so we had to go through a blue and hold
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: our weapons above our heads and then we got out
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: the other side. I took my fatigues off, and I
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: had about nine leeches right near my power source, and
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: so I decided and then die wee that are our
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: commandant told us that they like warm, wet places like
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: under your arms and down in your crotch.
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: And I haven't worn underwear since nineteen eighty six.
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: Wow, And that's all it took. And that is all.
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: You can't say, you can't preface it with that's all.
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: That's what it took. Seven leeches, seven leeches near my
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: near my powers horse. I'm not no chance, lance, And
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: how do you pull them off?
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: You just can't do you? Just can you just pull
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: a leach off? I've never had a leech stock.
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: Dale Dale came and he used like a cigarette butt
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: and like he burned him and pulled him at the
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: same time. And it was very humiliating to take my
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: you know, to have all twenty four guys looking at
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: you know, the Irish donkey with seven leeches.
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: Wow, I'm not getting any leeches.
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: Near my I guess jeans would be fine, but scrubs
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: wouldn't work.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: No gross even gene. Oh man, I couldn't do it
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: with my jeans. Too much chafing.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: All right, should we get back to the episode.
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: Guys, are you boxers or tidy? What do you guys?
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: I'm straight up boxers. Dude, whities can't happen.
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: No, no, I don't do teddy whities. But they're not
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: boxers like traditional boxers, minors sort of like clingy tight
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: soft boxers. Okay, their their stance. If if I highly
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: recommend this brand s t a ncee. They're not a
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: paid sponsor, but I'm giving the dance like the socks. Yes,
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: they make really fun socks. But they also make this
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: like butter It's called like butter Undies.
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: Butter Undies by stance.
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go. There's a shout out for butter Undies.
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: Send Donald an XXXL every stance, folks.
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: I don't need an X. My waist isn't that big, dude?
- 1:02:36Speaker 2: Oh quadru blocks.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: Wow, we got to get back to Kenny and Judy
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: because we haven't given them their due. Because the song,
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: the song he turns Off, is in fact the song
- 1:02:48Speaker 3: that then Sammy and Judy sing together acapella.
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: Beautifully, so pretty, so pretty.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: That's so tough to do. Also, I guess it was.
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: You know, they must practice a lot.
- 1:03:00Speaker 5: They had to have practiced that, because that's so like
- 1:03:03Speaker 5: even the way lock the Cadence and everything was on fire,
- 1:03:09Speaker 5: you know what I mean.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: That had to they had to remind everyone who's listening
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: what the song was. It was talk Dirty to Me, Oh,
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: talk Dirty to Me by Poison.
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: But they're not again, Gosh, I'm beating a dead horse here,
- 1:03:24Speaker 3: But the two of them are. They're not showing off.
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: They're not putting it up on a bill they're not
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: putting it up on a billboard.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: They're so great, they're so graceful, and they're not doing
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: can you believe this ship? Because Sammy never does that
- 1:03:37Speaker 3: and Judy is the master of just navigating her way
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: through a scene, and the two of them together are
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: so money and that.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Thing is just so lovely. And then the same says
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: I love you. I dropped.
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: On it really made me miss him too. I had
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: just one of those moments of going fucking hell on
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: too soon. This guy is so funny and so talented,
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: and I just wish more people got to know how
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: talented he was. I mean, he was a successful working actor,
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: but I I you know, I watch him in this
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: and I go, I just I wish everyone in the
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: world knew how genius this guy.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: His abilities.
- 1:04:18Speaker 5: Man, he's just had so many great abilities, you know
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: what I mean, he could make you did you know problem?
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: Did you guys at the end of the show actually
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: get to throw things off the roof? Yeah?
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: I don't remember I did any of that because I
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: remember that.
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: Being a kind of a nightmare with it also dates
- 1:04:36Speaker 5: the show with Letterman talking about let you want to
- 1:04:38Speaker 5: throw stuff off the roof?
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: Like Letterman. Yeah, it's like Letterman hasn't been on for
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: what ten years now.
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Well, for those of you who are too young to
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: or didn't ever watch Letterman, he would often throw large
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: objects off the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theater.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: And was this before he moved to CBS.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: No, I think it was a bit he did for
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: the whole his whole thing.
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: I don't remember.
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: I don't remember, but but I think we did. I
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: have a weird memory of feeling like it was kind
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: of dangerous. It's probably something they wouldn't let us do today,
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: with all the with with the doubt, with the increase
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: in set safety. Because the wall of that roof wasn't
- 1:05:14Speaker 2: incredibly high and we were hurling watermelons over the side.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: I don't know that that would be approved by by
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: HR this at this day and age.
- 1:05:25Speaker 5: By the way, my Bill cosby that that made me
- 1:05:28Speaker 5: laugh out loud, and I think it made me laugh.
- 1:05:30Speaker 5: I think it made me laugh because of how bad
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: my bill.
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like it was turned up to eleven.
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: It was, it was turned up to eleven.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I think.
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: Yeah, it was almost like you were doing an impression
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: of Eddie, of Eddie Murphy, of Eddie Murphy doing his impression.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: Now why pudding. I didn't even that was such a
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: non sequitor, like we put pudding in medical gloves.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: And then toss them off the roof.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Yeah, and then you went into a I wonder if
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: that was in the script. Do you think I was
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: in the script or you just riff that.
- 1:06:04Speaker 5: No, that was definitely in the script. We were putting
- 1:06:06Speaker 5: off the roof. They definitely put it in the show.
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: I would like to talk to you about, would like
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: to talk to you about some of the things you've
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: been doing in your shop.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: About some of the things that you do and your
- 1:06:22Speaker 4: show now.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: And then and then and then Neil at the end saying, oh.
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: Yeah, like apocalypse now right. I think that was the
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: I learned from Scrubs wiki that was the first time
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Neil's ever been alone in a scene.
- 1:06:42Speaker 4: Really, Oh my goodness, Yeah, that's WICKI they really have.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: But he gets Billy.
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: Billy puts him alone more and more as the when
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: him building that squirrel thing in his.
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: Garage, and I think that I think he gets more
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: and more alone.
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think that this was a shift to Neil,
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: Like I think he entered the world of a regular
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: cast member around here.
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: And there is an episode where Neil's not going to
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: be on this show in the first season, and that's
- 1:07:11Speaker 5: how they got around him not being a regular. If
- 1:07:14Speaker 5: I'm really if I recall correctly, let's ask a Bill.
- 1:07:17Speaker 5: We can ask Bill right now.
- 1:07:18Speaker 2: That's a good ask Bill. Go ahead, Donald, ask Bill
- 1:07:21Speaker 2: Bill coma.
- 1:07:23Speaker 5: If my memory serves me correctly, isn't there an episode
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: where there's no janitor.
- 1:07:28Speaker 2: And if so, was that related to tiptoeing around his
- 1:07:32Speaker 2: contract because he would have had to have been a
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: regular of some sort, do not say five six seven eight?
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: Bill Well shut it down.
- 1:07:41Speaker 7: Neil Flynn did not have to test for the part
- 1:07:43Speaker 7: of the janitor, so he was not listed as a regular.
- 1:07:48Speaker 7: You know, I just cast him as a guest star
- 1:07:49Speaker 7: in the pilot with the intention of putting him in
- 1:07:51Speaker 7: every episode, And then we did put him in every
- 1:07:53Speaker 7: episode as a recur guy, and at the very end
- 1:07:57Speaker 7: made him. You know, I was able to convince the
- 1:08:00Speaker 7: networks they liked him a lot, that we needed to
- 1:08:01Speaker 7: pay to make him a regular the second year. Originally
- 1:08:05Speaker 7: they only wanted him in a maximum of four episodes,
- 1:08:10Speaker 7: but I was like four, you're gonna have him in.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: Like five six seven eight. Stop it, Dan off this
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: fucking guy.
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: Let's take a break.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: We'll be right back after these fine words. High high, Hi,
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: We're back in. Hello, back quick, after a quick pe break,
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: We're back. Joel introduced us.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: It's Jeremy.
- 1:08:39Speaker 6: Lee nailed it.
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: There's our Jeremy. You got the Oprah introduction. It's a
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: it's a sacred right that only.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: Jeremy are you in an office.
- 1:08:50Speaker 6: I'm in my home office right now.
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Well Jeremy's like office baby. Okay, Oprah, can you chill
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: for two seconds, Jeremy, We'll do that. God, do you
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: get a car? You get a car.
- 1:09:03Speaker 4: You get a car.
- 1:09:04Speaker 2: Jeremy tell us you have a special special day to
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: be on the podcast because the legendary, the living legend,
- 1:09:11Speaker 2: Johnny C McGinley has joined us. So, who do you
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: have a question for three of the cast members of
- 1:09:16Speaker 2: the TV show Scrubs.
- 1:09:18Speaker 6: I do have a question with if I don't mind,
- 1:09:21Speaker 6: just a quick background, I work with children with autism,
- 1:09:24Speaker 6: and so we actually did research at my wonderful company
- 1:09:29Speaker 6: and nonprofit Autism Partnership Foundation to research if we could
- 1:09:34Speaker 6: change a kid with autism to like social things, not
- 1:09:37Speaker 6: just toys or food. And so we actually stole from
- 1:09:40Speaker 6: an episode that you guys did and got children to
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: actually enjoy the social aspect of that instead of their
- 1:09:47Speaker 6: favorite toy. So I guess my first question is Wow, Yeah,
- 1:09:50Speaker 6: and it's published in a journal, so you can look
- 1:09:52Speaker 6: at it hungry.
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: Chicken at all.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: That's incredible. Good for you.
- 1:09:56Speaker 6: I guess the first question is who came up with
- 1:09:58Speaker 6: the hungry Chicken because we use it all the time.
- 1:10:01Speaker 4: Wow, I don't know.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: I think that's Bill Lawrence. That came up with one
- 1:10:04Speaker 5: of the writers, right am, I right, guys.
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Oh god, if you if you throw this ability, he's
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: going to do a five bits now, you know, we
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: got to limit him.
- 1:10:12Speaker 2: We got a limit him. He doesn't get too many.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: That is a good question. I have no idea. I
- 1:10:17Speaker 2: think it must have been one of the writers. I
- 1:10:20Speaker 2: don't know.
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: Yeah, we gotta throw it to Bill.
- 1:10:22Speaker 2: So wait, just explain a little bit more. The children
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: who have autism, you say they would they would rather
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: interact with a toy, and you use this to give
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: them a way to interact without having a toy involved.
- 1:10:34Speaker 6: We both think like children thought to them only like
- 1:10:36Speaker 6: toys or only want food, and they only use that
- 1:10:38Speaker 6: to motivate them. But we know we can motivate them
- 1:10:41Speaker 6: socially too, because they need to be social and it's
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: a social disorder. So we would take the hungry chicken
- 1:10:47Speaker 6: and we would have do it with a friend of
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: theirs and then see if after we did it with
- 1:10:52Speaker 6: them they would pick that or favorite or their favorite toy.
- 1:10:56Speaker 6: And so we were able to show like by really
- 1:10:59Speaker 6: selling it and really do and a lot of hungry
- 1:11:00Speaker 6: chicken that they would pick a social motivator instead of
- 1:11:05Speaker 6: like food or M and M's, which is.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: That's amazing. Well, now, I really wish I could take
- 1:11:11Speaker 2: credit for inventing that, because that's a very inspiring story.
- 1:11:16Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Do you have another question for us?
- 1:11:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess I do. So You've talked a little
- 1:11:21Speaker 6: bit about the music on the show, and I just
- 1:11:23Speaker 6: think the music on the show is great. And Zach
- 1:11:27Speaker 6: just to say, I think the Garden State soundtrack is
- 1:11:29Speaker 6: one of the best soundtracks ever.
- 1:11:31Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: It's a mixtape. Hold on, it's a mix tape.
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: It's a mixtape. I want a Grammy for moment.
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: Yeah, but you yeah, if you want to mix tape Grammy, you.
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: Want to mixed Well, I didn't even know they had
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: a mixtape Grammy, but it turns out they do.
- 1:11:44Speaker 8: And you won that ship I did, I did, You've
- 1:11:47Speaker 8: held it, I have, I got, I got thet I
- 1:11:55Speaker 8: got the I got the fucking first award in my egot.
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: I didn't think was going to be my first. I
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: thought it might be my last.
- 1:12:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: If you get when you get the E got, you
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: already got the Grammy, right.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: I thought I was gonna have to do like a
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: book on tape.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: Jeremy, do you know what a he got is?
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: Of course I mean Grammy, Oscar Tony.
- 1:12:19Speaker 2: Yes, sir, yes, but thank you, thank you, Jeremy. I
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: I donald ruined my praise from you, and I want
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: to thank you.
- 1:12:27Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: It was it was shocking to everyone involved that that
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: soundtrack was so successful, but I really appreciate it.
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: It really is a good soundtrack.
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: Though.
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: Do you guys just like already have a song in
- 1:12:37Speaker 6: mind you know when that episode comes, or do you
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: listen to a song and you know, oh, that'll be
- 1:12:43Speaker 6: a great song to add to a soundtrack one day.
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: I think what happens is there There were some writers
- 1:12:49Speaker 2: that were involved. There was of course Christa Miller who
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: plays Jordan and is Bill's wife, and she's very very
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: into it and very good at it, and Bill and
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: then the editor, and then I think what happens is
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: you sort of this is the way I do it
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: for my films as well. You sort of build a
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: big ass playlist of potential songs. You feel like, oh,
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: these would be great for a montage or ooh this
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: is a really moving song for somewhere you don't really know,
- 1:13:14Speaker 2: and then when you get in the edit, you start
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: to go, let's try that song. And then you see
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: and I always jokingly have a goosebump detector. You can
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: listen to twenty five songs and they're like, Okay, that's okay,
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden you watch it and
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: you just get goosebumps up and down your arm and
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: you go, Okay, well, that's obviously a contender. And that's
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: a lot of trial and error, a lot of trial
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: and error. And these days it's even harder because so
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: many people are doing it that when I made my
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: film Wish I was Here, we would try it and
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: we'd fall in love with the song, and then we'd
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: look up online. I was like, oh no, it's been
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: used in Gray's Anatomy, It's been used on this It's
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: been used in this movie. So it's even harder now
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: because you got to find music that hasn't been done
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: to death in being used with film.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: Oh wow.
- 1:14:01Speaker 3: I mean, I think a really a really good example
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: that is Joshi is your friend Joshi and the different
- 1:14:08Speaker 3: music he brought to the show.
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Zachi was just astonishing.
- 1:14:12Speaker 2: Yeah, Joshua Raydon was a a is an artist that
- 1:14:15Speaker 2: we love a lot. And actually, Johnny, I don't even
- 1:14:18Speaker 2: know if you know this trivia, that his song Winter,
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: which is in that famous episode where we where we
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: lose Brendan Fraser, was the first song you'd ever written.
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: Yeah, wow, thank you because he wasn't the one hit
- 1:14:31Speaker 4: wonder dude.
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: Well this many years yeah, this many years later.
- 1:14:34Speaker 6: I loved his cover on alex Inc. That first episode.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: Just oh of Bob Dylan, thank you. You're you're the
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: so you're the guy that was watching alex sink. Thank
- 1:14:42Speaker 2: you so much.
- 1:14:44Speaker 6: My wife and I who's really sad she couldn't be here,
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: but she's actually a second year resident, so she's off
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: at the hospital.
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: Oh wow. Yeah, well, thank you, and thank you for
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: being such a fan of of all things Scrubs and
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: alex Inc And Garden State.
- 1:14:59Speaker 6: I really shit that and all you guys guys are amazing.
- 1:15:03Speaker 4: Man, you don't even know my name.
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: That was Jeremy.
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: No.
- 1:15:08Speaker 6: We were just watching Can't Hardly Wait. My wife is
- 1:15:11Speaker 6: not from America. We were watching Can't Hardly Wait it
- 1:15:15Speaker 6: and I forgot you were in it.
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: Oh my gosh. That's the best way to that's great,
- 1:15:19Speaker 4: that's great. It was right, it was going right.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: And then he's like, He's like. I turned to my
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: wife and I was like, did you remember that Tay Diggs.
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Is in this movie? All right, Jeremy give it up?
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: Thundrous applause Dan for Jeremy, Me.
- 1:15:39Speaker 2: Jeremy, stay safe and keep doing the beautiful work you're
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: doing with with autistic children. And thank you so much
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: for for the kny words.
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: Oh, thank you so much for having me. We appreciate it.
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: Thanks buddy. Well, guys, I think we did it. We've
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: gone it, We've gone along. The people seem to love it.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Whenever I say I've gotten a lot of chatter on
- 1:15:56Speaker 2: my Insta saying stop, saying you've gone too long. We
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: don't want you, guys to stop, but.
- 1:16:01Speaker 3: We want to.
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: You know, I had a great acting teacher. He used
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: to say, give him ten minutes less than they want.
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: Was this great acting teacher that you have ever on scrubs?
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: Yes?
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: But the way did you know that?
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: Dude?
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: Come on, man, I thought you may have forgotten with
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: your stoner brain.
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: Who did who did? Who was your acting teacher? And
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: who did?
- 1:16:18Speaker 5: I had I had the privilege to work with Zach's
- 1:16:22Speaker 5: acting teacher though David Downs.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: David Downs I work and who did David play?
- 1:16:27Speaker 5: He played the one whose kid was in a coma
- 1:16:31Speaker 5: or broke his Uh, I don't, I don't remember.
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: I directed the episode. Was this wasn't the epic Heather
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Graham one?
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: Was it?
- 1:16:40Speaker 4: No, it wasn't.
- 1:16:40Speaker 5: It was like he broke his son, either broke his
- 1:16:43Speaker 5: back or I I forget what it was. But you know,
- 1:16:47Speaker 5: he asked me to be honest with him, right, and
- 1:16:50Speaker 5: he was like his one line. I remember the part
- 1:16:53Speaker 5: of the interaction we had. He said to me, do
- 1:16:55Speaker 5: you shave your head because it's cool or because you're bold?
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: And I go, yeah, it was a really good episode.
- 1:17:04Speaker 2: We'll have to figure out what it was. But yeah,
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: David Downs was my acting teacher at Northwestern and also
- 1:17:11Speaker 2: a beautiful actor, and so I had him do a
- 1:17:14Speaker 2: guest star on Scrubs.
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:17:16Speaker 9: I always feel like one of the great gifts of
- 1:17:18Speaker 9: being mister Bulger sorry, either a hit show or producing
- 1:17:22Speaker 9: a movie is throwing talented friends, not just random friends,
- 1:17:28Speaker 9: talented friends, putting them on your piece.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And I did it with a half a dozen actors on.
- 1:17:33Speaker 3: Scrubs and then if people are right, I do it
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: all the time with the movies I'm producing too.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: Yeah, you have some very talented friends.
- 1:17:40Speaker 2: Yeah, you've done quite a posse of Sorry, I just
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: don't interrupt. Oh I know what it was why it
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: was special? It was the Wizard of Oz episode. Joel
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: is telling us in the chat. It was mister Bulger
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: and his son was brain dead and it's almost brain in.
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: It was the it was at season five, episode seven.
- 1:17:56Speaker 2: If you're listening and are curious, it was. Yeah, it
- 1:17:59Speaker 2: was I that that epic Wizard of Oz episode.
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: But Johnny, mister.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: Bulger would be an homage to Ray Bulger that Wizard
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: of Us.
- 1:18:08Speaker 2: Yes, sir, it would be.
- 1:18:09Speaker 5: Now, Johnny, Johnny, you have a lot of you have
- 1:18:11Speaker 5: a lot of friends that like are almost like mentors
- 1:18:16Speaker 5: to me, like Eric Lasal, Michael Beach. These are people
- 1:18:20Speaker 5: that you've known, yeah, since you like out of college
- 1:18:26Speaker 5: or you went to college with a lot of these guys.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: Eric and I, Eric and I went to college together, right,
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: and uh, that's he's my guyn.
- 1:18:34Speaker 5: And these guys are like, these guys are like, you know, uh,
- 1:18:38Speaker 5: mentors to me, Like you know, when I was a
- 1:18:41Speaker 5: young actor. Michael Beach was one of the people when
- 1:18:44Speaker 5: I was doing Waiting and Exhale. I was like, well,
- 1:18:45Speaker 5: this is what you need to do if you want
- 1:18:47Speaker 5: to be successful. Stop smoking that damn cigarette that you're
- 1:18:49Speaker 5: holding onto Like I was smoking cigarettes, like I want
- 1:18:52Speaker 5: to be a movie star, smoking a cigarette a table read.
- 1:18:54Speaker 4: He was like, oh, you want to be a movie star.
- 1:18:56Speaker 4: Put the fucking cigarette down, dude, Mike.
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: Mike, Mike is no lie. Mike has no.
- 1:19:01Speaker 4: Straight up, straight up Johnny.
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: I remember I was ticking the other day. You were
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: on a movie, a big movie, the one that took
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: place at the motel with Cusack and all.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: The Identity Jim Jim Engle directed.
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: Identity, and it's a really good movie. I recommend to you.
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: I I liked it a lot, but I was I.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: I remember you said you want to come visit the
- 1:19:22Speaker 2: set because the set was really cool. Even though it
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: looks like it's all outside, it was all in a
- 1:19:26Speaker 2: giant soundstage and it was all pissing rain the whole time.
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: And uh, and you said you gotta. You said you
- 1:19:33Speaker 2: got to come see this set. It's really cool, and
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: I was like, I can't believe I'm allowed to. And uh,
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: And I came to visit you one day on set
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: and it was just so cool, And I just I
- 1:19:41Speaker 2: thought of that because I know a bunch of your buddies.
- 1:19:45Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: You know, it feels like you and your posse often
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: cast each other in each other's films.
- 1:19:50Speaker 3: I think it's I think if your posse is talented,
- 1:19:53Speaker 3: I mean there's there's some outliers, then then yeah, good audience,
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: it's gonna it's gonna make life.
- 1:20:00Speaker 4: I like that too.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: I like to use the same people over and over again.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: But you didn't use Donald in Garden State.
- 1:20:06Speaker 2: Oh Jesus, here you go.
- 1:20:08Speaker 5: Thank you John, Oh God, thank you John, Thank you
- 1:20:11Speaker 5: very very much like Oliver Stone used John c McGinley.
- 1:20:14Speaker 2: Yeah, so many times, so many times.
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: Made you would think that Zach Braff would take a hit,
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Like.
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: You know, I want you to be the I want
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: you to be the Johnny c McGinley to my Oliver Stone.
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: You say that now, but I don't think. I don't think.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: How many movies did you do with him?

- 1:20:42Speaker 2: of the best. What about talk radio. I was thinking
- 1:20:45Speaker 2: about you and talk radio the other day. I was
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: thinking about you in seven. For those of you who
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: don't remember, Johnny's in one of my favorite movies, seven Shot.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: Take the shot and then Johnny, you go, I don't
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: know if you improv did you improve this? When you
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: go somebody? Oh, somebody I did. That was incredible. He's
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: in the chopper right when uh, right, when the ship
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: goes down with there wasn't the box was in the box.
- 1:21:10Speaker 3: And then David David gave us as much rope as
- 1:21:13Speaker 3: we wanted to hang ourselves with. He he lets the
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: actors run and then he'll chop it together and post,
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: but he lets you run.
- 1:21:20Speaker 5: There were two scenes, so you're in the chopper, but
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: you're also in when they bum rushed the room too, right.
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: Yeah, with the emaciated guy.
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'll never forget. I remember getting goosebumps when

- 1:21:33Speaker 2: you were and you go, oh my god, somebody call somebody,
- 1:21:37Speaker 2: and I was like, that's such a good look.
- 1:21:39Speaker 1: With the emaciated guy.
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: David found out there was asbestos in that building and
- 1:21:44Speaker 3: he wasn't down with it. So we shut down for
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: a while and found another building, and.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: That was a hole to do. That was a complete
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: clusterfuck when he found out there was asbestos in that building.
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: You know you have but you know you have budget
- 1:21:58Speaker 2: when they're like, there's asbestus in the building, which shutting down.
