Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Sophia Busch and Jerry O'Connell have been racing our screens
- 0:02Speaker 1: for decades.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Now.
- 0:03Speaker 1: They are teaming up for a new coming of age
- 0:05Speaker 1: comedy movie called Summer's Last Resort, which premieres on to
- 0:09Speaker 1: Be this Friday.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's a clip.
- 0:13Speaker 3: I'm just saying, we are on vacation and you could
- 0:16Speaker 3: stand to loosen.
- 0:17Speaker 4: Up, really really, come and meet the Beep squad. It's
- 0:19Speaker 4: some of the other nominees. Yeah, but this is Millie.
- 0:25Speaker 4: That's Grayson right there. Yeah, you raise them on dot
- 0:38Speaker 4: com or what.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I've like seen this clip before and I'm still laughing.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Actors Sophia Bush and Jerry O'Connell are here with us
- 0:47Speaker 1: live in the Broadcast Center. Thank you both.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome.
- 0:51Speaker 1: This must have been a blast to shoot. Sophia, what
- 0:55Speaker 1: was your experience To tell us a little bit about
- 0:56Speaker 1: the movie.
- 0:56Speaker 3: I mean, we just had the time of our lives.
- 0:58Speaker 3: I have been looking for great comedies. I missed the
- 1:02Speaker 3: movies of the eighties and nineties that raised us. And
- 1:04Speaker 3: when I read this, it's a very modern take on
- 1:08Speaker 3: a you know, National Lampoons esque family vacation, and I
- 1:13Speaker 3: was to do it with Jerry. I mean we just
- 1:16Speaker 3: made it our mission to entertain the kids at work
- 1:19Speaker 3: all day.
- 1:19Speaker 2: Every day.
- 1:20Speaker 3: We had the time of our lives.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really funny. I mean we were both young actors,
- 1:26Speaker 4: so we really we really want to make you know,
- 1:30Speaker 4: especially I hate to get a little grim here, but
- 1:33Speaker 4: I was in stand By Me and Rob Ryner passed
- 1:35Speaker 4: away last year at the end of last year, and
- 1:39Speaker 4: he made he made such a lasting memory for me,
- 1:43Speaker 4: and like a lifelong career. I sort of like it's
- 1:47Speaker 4: sort of our jobs now to make sure that if
- 1:50Speaker 4: there's younger actors on a set, to make sure they
- 1:52Speaker 4: have a lasting, lifelong sort of memory from something. So
- 1:56Speaker 4: it's really about having fun with younger actors when you
- 1:59Speaker 4: do a film like this and making sure they have
- 2:01Speaker 4: a good time as well.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Well, it's such an interesting point that you raised, Gerry,
- 2:05Speaker 2: because you mentioned stand By Me. One Tree Hill is iconic.
- 2:09Speaker 2: People still debate who their favorite characters on One Tree.
- 2:11Speaker 4: Hill, right.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Right, Brook, It's got to be it's Brooke. But I
- 2:25Speaker 2: think that the point Jerry, about coming up age films
- 2:29Speaker 2: where where there are child actors or young actors on them,
- 2:32Speaker 2: and what it takes to elicit the performances that we
- 2:35Speaker 2: saw in this film. What's it like for you seeing
- 2:38Speaker 2: the working with these young actors, knowing that you two
- 2:40Speaker 2: have been around set since you were both children as well.
- 2:43Speaker 3: You know, it was really meaningful. And I think, especially
- 2:46Speaker 3: on this movie, to have the incredible Violet mcgirl playing
- 2:49Speaker 3: my daughter, an actual fourteen year old playing a fourteen.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Year old, which is rare.
- 2:55Speaker 3: It's very rare, and the young actor Davian who played
- 2:58Speaker 3: my son as fantastic as well, and it really, I
- 3:02Speaker 3: don't know, it gave us the opportunity, I think, to
- 3:04Speaker 3: see everything through a new lens and to not only
- 3:08Speaker 3: encourage them to be bold. You know, we were playing
- 3:11Speaker 3: improv games with the kids. They were both nervous. It
- 3:13Speaker 3: was Violet's first comedy, you know, she got famous as
- 3:16Speaker 3: a young actor on the Haunting of Hill House. Couldn't
- 3:18Speaker 3: be more opposite, and so to really help encourage her
- 3:23Speaker 3: as a young comedic actress was so much fun. And
- 3:27Speaker 3: to encourage them to advocate for themselves and speak their
- 3:30Speaker 3: needs and ask for things and ask questions. I don't know,
- 3:34Speaker 3: I feel like we sort of got to do what
- 3:36Speaker 3: maybe we wish people had done for us at times,
- 3:39Speaker 3: and That was very cool.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I love that you were trying to create core memories,
- 3:42Speaker 1: positive core memories of the experience for them while making
- 3:45Speaker 1: a movie that you're hoping is part of kind of
- 3:47Speaker 1: the collective core memory of this generation, just like we
- 3:50Speaker 1: all had those movies that we came up on.
- 3:53Speaker 4: Jerry.
- 3:53Speaker 1: I know you have teen daughters. They were helping you
- 3:56Speaker 1: run your lines. They saw the film. What was their
- 4:00Speaker 1: movie review?
- 4:01Speaker 4: They love the film, They love love Sophia. It was
- 4:05Speaker 4: so funny. We went out to when we finished filming.
- 4:09Speaker 4: You know, when you work with someone that's close, you know,
- 4:11Speaker 4: you have like husband husband, and you have work spouses.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Immediately I said to my wife and kids. I was like,
- 4:19Speaker 4: we're going out with Sophia and her partner. Like you
- 4:22Speaker 4: need to meet my my wife, my work wife, my
- 4:27Speaker 4: work wife. And my kids are like, you're going out
- 4:29Speaker 4: with Sophia Bush. And we were like yeah. My kids
- 4:31Speaker 4: were like, we're coming. We're coming at me, No way,
- 4:36Speaker 4: my kids, you never come. My kids never come to
- 4:40Speaker 4: anything work related. They're like, we're payble boring. So you're
- 4:44Speaker 4: in clearly crushed.
- 4:47Speaker 2: So fun.
- 4:48Speaker 3: It was also Jerry's birthday.
- 4:50Speaker 4: It was a birthday from us.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Yeah, and halfway through the dinner we figure out it's
- 4:56Speaker 3: his birthday and we we had a war going as
- 4:59Speaker 3: the parental figures on set in South Africa, and I
- 5:03Speaker 3: almost always lost. When I would try to get the check,
- 5:06Speaker 3: he always sniped me. I was like, are you calling ahead?
- 5:10Speaker 3: Get to the restaurant, Like how are you doing this?
- 5:12Speaker 3: And so when we went out to dinner with his
- 5:14Speaker 3: wife and with my partner and his kids, and I
- 5:17Speaker 3: found out it was his birthday, thank god. We went
- 5:19Speaker 3: to a restaurant that's been like my local between I
- 5:24Speaker 3: went up to the meter d and was like, on
- 5:26Speaker 3: my life, you will let me pay this fill. I
- 5:28Speaker 3: know he already gave you his credit card. I don't care.
- 5:30Speaker 2: It's his birthday.
- 5:32Speaker 4: And we did it and I got it. It was expensive, Toots,
- 5:40Speaker 4: you deserve it.
- 5:42Speaker 2: This is the chemistreet that we see in this film.
- 5:45Speaker 2: And before we wrap this up, I want to ask
- 5:47Speaker 2: you guys, just because you are so iconic in our
- 5:51Speaker 2: minds and the roles that you've played, uh, is there
- 5:54Speaker 2: a scene from one another one of my favorite movies,
- 5:57Speaker 2: John Tucker Must Die, that was cut that was hilarious
- 6:00Speaker 2: that we never saw. And Jerry have a question for
- 6:03Speaker 2: your best stand by me.
- 6:05Speaker 3: I mean the filming John Tucker Must Tie was one
- 6:08Speaker 3: of the greatest experiences of my young acting life. I
- 6:12Speaker 3: would say similar to this, just an all out comedy
- 6:17Speaker 3: where anything goes. And yeah, you know you'll get to
- 6:20Speaker 3: the end of Summer's Lass Resort and you'll see all
- 6:23Speaker 3: the outtakes that they've crafted into a blooper reel during
- 6:27Speaker 3: the credits. The outtakes from John Tucker Must Die have
- 6:31Speaker 3: to be somewhere and we should find I.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Would love to see those.
- 6:34Speaker 2: That movie so much, My.
- 6:36Speaker 3: God, we you know, that's the gift when you work
- 6:39Speaker 3: with a great director. We worked with Melanie Scrafano on
- 6:41Speaker 3: that movie. I worked with just an incredible director, Betty.
- 6:46Speaker 3: And when you get I don't know the green light,
- 6:50Speaker 3: I guess you could say to try anything like thank
- 6:54Speaker 3: god something. But although we should have probably get to see.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It now a kid, stand by me with Will and
- 7:02Speaker 2: with Corey and you know river is there is the
- 7:06Speaker 2: bond that you formed on that film. They they've lasted
- 7:09Speaker 2: till today. But what would you tell us about I mean,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you've talked about this before, but I just want to
- 7:14Speaker 2: know a little something. I love that movie so much.
- 7:16Speaker 4: Yeah. You know, first of all, glad shout out to you.
- 7:18Speaker 4: You really are a movie but they really you really
- 7:22Speaker 4: know your stuff. Yeah, thank you.
- 7:24Speaker 2: That means a lot because people make fun of me
- 7:26Speaker 2: for knowing.
- 7:27Speaker 4: You know. Again, getting back to Summer's Last Resort and
- 7:31Speaker 4: I'm not just plugging Summer's Last Resort on to be whatever,
- 7:35Speaker 4: which is.
- 7:35Speaker 2: Paramount got you covered.
- 7:39Speaker 4: You know. Rob Reiner really encouraged me to add lib
- 7:44Speaker 4: and have fun on a set, and I was sort
- 7:46Speaker 4: of I was I was a hyperactive child. I was
- 7:52Speaker 4: a rambunctious kid, and I was always getting in trouble
- 7:55Speaker 4: at school. And I remember we were doing one scene
- 8:00Speaker 4: and I had lib something, you know, and uh, Rob
- 8:04Speaker 4: Reiner went, you know, cut hey, Jerry, and he like
- 8:06Speaker 4: they have something called video village which the director watches.
- 8:09Speaker 4: And then he was walking a set and he was
- 8:11Speaker 4: a big guy Rob and he walked over and I
- 8:13Speaker 4: was like, oh, man, I I was rambunctious. I should
- 8:18Speaker 4: have shut up. I'm going to get in trouble, and
- 8:20Speaker 4: uh he went, hey, Jerry, that's it, man, That's what
- 8:23Speaker 4: I'm talking about.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Like goshlid keeping keep going.
- 8:27Speaker 4: And it was really like a light bulb moment. And
- 8:30Speaker 4: so when we're working on Summer's Last Resort, like on TV,
- 8:33Speaker 4: you know, with the kids, if they do something crazy,
- 8:36Speaker 4: you know, one of our kids, I'd be like, hey, guys,
- 8:38Speaker 4: that's it, Like let's have some fun. Let's got it,
- 8:41Speaker 4: you know what.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I need that message with my keep going, thank you
- 8:50Speaker 1: so much for being here. You remember Summer's Last premier,
- 8:53Speaker 1: as we said Friday, July third, on to me.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yeah,
