Transcript
- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 78! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know. And today we're sticking with the hotel theme — but this time we're focusing on asking for help. Luna: Ohh, that's smart. Like if you're lost inside the hotel or need something. Lucas: Exactly. Let's start with a super useful phrase: "Tafadhali nisaidie." It means "Please help me." Luna: Tafadhali nisaidie. Tafadhali nisaidie. Lucas: Perfect. Tafadhali is "please," and nisaidie is "help me." So you're literally saying "Please help me." Luna: I love that. It's polite and direct. Lucas: Now, if you're lost, you can say "Nimepotea." That means "I'm lost." Luna: Nimepotea. Nimepotea. Lucas: Yes! And you can combine them: "Tafadhali nisaidie, nimepotea." Please help me, I'm lost. Luna: Tafadhali nisaidie, nimepotea. That rolls off the tongue nicely. Lucas: Now, another common need: finding the bathroom. "Choo kiko wapi?" means "Where is the bathroom?" Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Choo kiko wapi? Lucas: Great. Choo is "bathroom," kiko is "is," and wapi is "where." So literally "Bathroom is where?" Luna: Got it. And if something's wrong, like I need general help, what do I say? Lucas: You can say "Naomba msaada." That means "I request help" or "I need help." Luna: Naomba msaada. Naomba msaada. Lucas: Perfect. And of course, after someone helps you, say "Asante kwa msaada wako." Thank you for your help. Luna: Asante kwa msaada wako. That's a long one! Lucas: Let's break it down: asante is "thank you," kwa is "for," msaada is "help," and wako is "your." So "Thank you for your help." Luna: Asante kwa msaada wako. I'll practice that one. Lucas: Okay, let's do a quick scene. Imagine you're in a big hotel and you're lost. What do you say to the staff? Luna: Tafadhali nisaidie, nimepotea. Lucas: Perfect. And then they help you. You say? Luna: Asante kwa msaada wako. Lucas: Exactly. And if you need the bathroom, you ask? Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Lucas: There you go. Now let's practice all five once more. Repeat after me: Tafadhali nisaidie. Luna: Tafadhali nisaidie. Lucas: Nimepotea. Luna: Nimepotea. Lucas: Choo kiko wapi? Luna: Choo kiko wapi? Lucas: Naomba msaada. Luna: Naomba msaada. Lucas: Asante kwa msaada wako. Luna: Asante kwa msaada wako. Lucas: You sound great. You know, it's funny — I was thinking, a lot of people use Fexingo to prepare for trips, and these phrases really can make a difference. Luna: Totally. And if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Swahili, a handful of listeners chip in monthly through buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo, and that's literally what funds making this many of these. Lucas: Yeah, no ads, just listener support. It's pretty cool that a small group already keeps it going. Luna: For sure. Anyway, let's keep going. Can we do a little roleplay? You're the hotel guest, I'm the staff. Lucas: Sure! So you, the guest, say "Tafadhali nisaidie, nimepotea." Luna: Tafadhali nisaidie, nimepotea. Lucas: Then I say, "Karibu. Naweza kukusaidia." Welcome, I can help you. Luna: Nice! And then I ask for the bathroom? "Choo kiko wapi?" Lucas: Exactly. And I'll point you in the right direction. Luna: This is so practical. I feel ready for my next hotel stay. Lucas: Me too. Let's do a quick recap: today we learned "Tafadhali nisaidie" — please help me, "Nimepotea" — I'm lost, "Choo kiko wapi?" — where is the bathroom, "Naomba msaada" — I need help, and "Asante kwa msaada wako" — thank you for your help. Luna: That's a lot, but with practice it'll stick. Lucas: Practice these phrases, and next time you're in a Swahili-speaking hotel, you'll be able to ask for help with confidence. Luna: Thanks for listening to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. We'll see you next time. Lucas: Kwaheri!
