- 0:00What if I told you that being successful does not mean that
- 0:04you are secure, being intelligent does not mean that
- 0:07you are intellectually aligned, and being high functioning and
- 0:11successful does not protect you from choosing the wrong person?
- 0:16Because one of the most confusing experiences for a lot
- 0:19of women who are accomplished, responsible, respected, and
- 0:22doing well in so many areas of life is this.
- 0:27They can run a team, they can build a career, they can manage
- 0:31a household. They can be the friend that
- 0:34everyone leans on. They can pray, they can lead,
- 0:37they can grind, they can get it done.
- 0:39But in romantic relationships, they find themselves drawn to
- 0:43emotionally unavailable people, stuck in patterns where they are
- 0:47over giving, over functioning, over explaining, overextending,
- 0:52and then wondering why it doesn't feel safe, secure or
- 0:56consistent. So if you've ever looked at your
- 0:58life and thought at all together everywhere else but feel
- 1:02emotionally confused and loved, this episode is for you.
- 1:06Good morning, good morning, and
- 1:22welcome to Rise and Thrive for Doctor J Nicole.
- 1:25I'm Doctor J Nicole, therapist, educator, and the reminder that
- 1:29healing does not require you to shrink.
- 1:32It requires you to be honest. And today we are talking about
- 1:36why high functioning women still end up in emotionally
- 1:39unavailable relationships, what's really happening
- 1:42underneath the pattern and what you can start doing differently,
- 1:46not just in your dating life, and how you choose your
- 1:49environments overall. Before we get into it, if you're
- 1:52someone who's committed to emotional growth, healthy
- 1:55relationships evolving from the inside out, go ahead and hit
- 1:59that subscribe button because we're building something here.
- 2:04Now let's get into it. The myth of the strong woman and
- 2:08the cost of high functioning. So we're going to start here.
- 2:11There is this cultural myth that if you're a strong woman, you
- 2:15don't struggle with certain things.
- 2:17The myth says if you're educated, then you should know
- 2:20better. If you accomplish, you should
- 2:22choose better. And if you're confident you
- 2:24shouldn't tolerate nonsense. And if you're a leader, you
- 2:28shouldn't end up hurt. And the myth creates so much
- 2:32shame. And because now you're not just
- 2:35dealing with the pain of the relationship, you're dealing
- 2:38with the embarrassment of it. And a lot of high functioning
- 2:40women are carrying this silent pressure to try to make it make
- 2:44sense. You might be asking yourself
- 2:46things like how can I be this smart and still be in this?
- 2:50How can I be this mature and still be attached to someone who
- 2:54keeps disappearing, Someone who is inconsistent?
- 2:58How can I be this spiritually grounded and still be struggling
- 3:02to detach? Here's the truth about it.
- 3:05High functioning is not the same as healed.
- 3:08And high functioning means you learn how to survive and
- 3:12succeed. There is a difference.
- 3:15And healed means you learn how to be safe and secure.
- 3:20High functioning means you can perform under pressure.
- 3:23Healed means you don't need pressure to feel alive.
- 3:28And the distinction matters because many high functioning
- 3:32women have built entire identities around capability,
- 3:38around being reliable, around being the one who holds it down.
- 3:44And when you're used to being the one who holds it down, it
- 3:47can feel normal to end up in relationships where you're the
- 3:51one doing the emotional holding too.
- 3:54You're holding the communication, you're holding
- 3:57the emotional labor, you're holding the clarity, you're
- 4:00holding the consistency, you're holding the vision.
- 4:04And you don't always realize that you're doing it because
- 4:07you've been doing this your whole life.
- 4:11For some women, this pattern started in childhood.
- 4:14You matured early because you had to.
- 4:18You became responsible early because you had to.
- 4:22You became emotionally aware early because you had to.
- 4:28You became the peacemaker early again because you had to.
- 4:33And you became the caretaker early because you had to.
- 4:38So now an emotional and unavailable partner doesn't feel
- 4:42like a red flag. It feels like a familiar role.
- 4:46It feels like, OK, I know what to do here, like I've been here
- 4:49before. And that's one of the most
- 4:51important things I want you to understand today.
- 4:53You can be drawn to what you're trained to manage, not what
- 4:58you're meant to receive. And I must say that again for
- 5:02the people in the back and in just in case you didn't get it,
- 5:06you can be drawn to what you're trained to manage, not what
- 5:10you're meant to receive. Now let's talk about attachment
- 5:16for a second. Attachment theory helps explain
- 5:19how we connect, how we bond, how we respond to closeness, and how
- 5:23we respond to distance. Most people have heard of
- 5:27anxious attachment and avoiding attachment, but I want to make
- 5:31it plain and practical. Anxious attachment also sounds
- 5:34like I need reassurance. I overthink everything.
- 5:38I feel safe when you're close. When you pull away, I spiral.
- 5:42I don't want to be too much, but I also don't want to be
- 5:45abandoned. Attachment for a more of
- 5:49avoidance since it sounds more like I value my independence.
- 5:53I don't like feeling needed. I shut down when things get
- 5:56emotional. I feel suffocated when people
- 5:59want closeness. I can't do it all now.
- 6:02Secure attachment on the other hand, sounds like I can be close
- 6:06and still be myself. I can communicate needs without
- 6:10fear. I trust consistency.
- 6:13I don't have to chase or test love.
- 6:17Now here's the part that people miss.
- 6:19A high functioning woman can look secure on the outside and
- 6:23still have an anxious or even an avoiding attachment response and
- 6:28romantic relationships. Because attachment doesn't care
- 6:32about your resume and doesn't care about your degrees and does
- 6:35not care about how many people respect you at work.
- 6:39Attachment activates in intimate spaces.
- 6:43It activates where you are emotionally vulnerable.
- 6:47It activates when you want to be chosen.
- 6:50It activates when you risk rejection.
- 6:54So you can be confident in your career and still become
- 6:58emotionally dysregulated when your partner's inconsistent.
- 7:02And you can start doing what high functioning women often do
- 7:06when they feel anxious. They start over functioning,
- 7:10they start working for love, they start trying to earn
- 7:14consistency. And when you start trying to
- 7:16prove your worth and you start being the one who communicates,
- 7:22clarifies, check in that plans, fixes, moves, explains whole
- 7:28space, all the things while the other person stays ambiguous.
- 7:36And ambiguity can be addictive for anxious attachment styles
- 7:43because anxious attachment doesn't just crave love, it
- 7:46craves relief. And relief from uncertainty,
- 7:50from silence, relief from distance.
- 7:53With a high functioning woman becomes emotionally employed in
- 7:57the relationship. She's doing a job and she's
- 7:59calling it love. And she gets stuck in this loop
- 8:04of creating the need for relief because this is where she knows
- 8:09how to function. Now let's go a little bit deeper
- 8:14here. Because beyond attachment
- 8:16styles, your nervous system is the part of you that learns what
- 8:21normal feels like. And if your nervous system
- 8:23learned that love comes with unpredictability, tension,
- 8:28criticism, emotional absence, or instability, then peace can
- 8:34become unfamiliar. And what's unfamiliar can feel
- 8:40unsafe, even when it's healthy. This is why some women get into
- 8:46stable relationships and start thinking something's missing.
- 8:50But what they're actually experiencing is withdrawal.
- 8:54Because chaos produces adrenaline, unpredictability
- 8:58produces dopamine spikes, And when you've been trained for
- 9:02survival, your body can confuse intensity with intimacy.
- 9:08Intensity is not intimacy. Chemistry is not character.
- 9:13And a spark is not always a sign.
- 9:18Sometimes it's a signal, and sometimes that spark is your
- 9:23nervous system recognizing a pattern that it already knows.
- 9:27The body doesn't always respond to what's good, it responds to
- 9:31what's familiar. So if you grew up with that
- 9:34inconsistency emotionally, your nervous system may have learned
- 9:39love equals anxiety, love equals performing, love equals waiting,
- 9:47love equals fixing, love equals working.
- 9:52Now, I don't know about you, but I'm exhausted even thinking of
- 9:54all those things. That is a lot of responsibility
- 9:58for one person to carry. So then when someone comes along
- 10:03who is emotionally consistent, they're kind, they're clear,
- 10:08they're stable, they're intentional.
- 10:12Your nervous system doesn't say finally, safety.
- 10:16It says this is weird. You think they're weird, you
- 10:20become suspicious and you interpret it as wrong.
- 10:24And This is why sometimes high functioning women say he's a
- 10:29good man, but I'm not feeling or like, you know, something's
- 10:32missing. Like I don't know what it is.
- 10:34It's boring. This is stable.
- 10:38And really, what it is is that he's not activating your
- 10:43survival pattern. And I'm not saying that every
- 10:47calm relationship is automatically a match.
- 10:49I'm not saying that at all, OK? Healing often requires that you
- 10:52develop a new definition of what love feels like in your body.
- 10:58Because if love has always felt like a roller coaster, peace is
- 11:01going to be complete boredom and snoozefest at first, OK?
- 11:06And not because peace is boring, but because your nervous system
- 11:10is recalibrating and that recalibration is part of growth.
- 11:18Now we're going to shift and talk about faith a little bit
- 11:21because this is where a lot of people get trapped.
- 11:23And I'm going to say this with care because I'm not here to
- 11:28take away anybody's hope, but I am here to protect your
- 11:32discernment. Some high functioning women stay
- 11:36in emotionally unhealthy relationships because they
- 11:39confuse long-suffering with loyalty.
- 11:44They confuse patients with tolerance.
- 11:47They confuse grace with self abandonment.
- 11:51And I know because I lived here before, but I don't live there
- 11:54anymore. And you might even think, if I
- 11:59pray harder, he'll change. If I love better, he'll see my
- 12:03value. If I stay consistent, it'll
- 12:06inspire him, It'll motivate him. If I wait long enough, God will
- 12:12reward me. But faith is not denial.
- 12:17Faith is not ignoring patterns. It's not calling dysfunction a
- 12:21season. And faith does not require you
- 12:24to betray yourself. Discernment is spiritual.
- 12:29Paying attention is spiritual, honoring your nervous system is
- 12:34spiritual. And a relationship that requires
- 12:37you to shrink your needs to keep someone is not love, it's
- 12:41survival. Let me say this plainly, God
- 12:44does not need you to be emotionally unsafe to prove
- 12:48you're loving. And I want to speak to the woman
- 12:53who keeps saying I just want to give him grace.
- 12:57Grace is beautiful, but grace without boundaries can become
- 13:03self sabotage, self erasure and self destruction.
- 13:10And a lot of high functioning women are really, really good at
- 13:14being compassionate, but they're not always good at being honest
- 13:19about what something is truly costing them.
- 13:22All right, beautiful people. If this episode has already

- 14:18Now back to your regularly scheduled programming.
- 14:23So let's make this practical. If you're constantly anxious,
- 14:29overthinking, wondering where you stand, waiting for clarity,
- 14:34chasing communication, or even carrying the emotional load of
- 14:38the relationship, that is not peace.
- 14:43OK, so we got to talk about standards.
- 14:47And a lot of high functioning women have standards everywhere
- 14:52except where they want love at work.
- 14:58Well, you're not accepting any unclear expectations.
- 15:00There's no inconsistent communication.
- 15:03There definitely is not disrespect.
- 15:05You're not accepting broken systems or missed deadlines
- 15:09without accountability. However, when we get over to
- 15:13dating, you start negotiating. And negotiating is good
- 15:18sometimes, but not when we are negotiating our needs.
- 15:21Then you're starting to explain yourself.
- 15:24You're exhausted trying to make it make sense.
- 15:29You start accepting bare minimum because you see potential.
- 15:35You start rewriting reality because you don't want to start
- 15:39over. And I want you to hear me.
- 15:43Potential is not a relationship. Consistency is, and if you're
- 15:49dating someone's potential, you're dating a fantasy.
- 15:54And fantasies can keep you stuck because they always feel
- 15:58possible. And if we're being honest, a lot
- 16:02of us are addicted to fantasy. High functioning women often
- 16:06stay too long because they believe effort can change the
- 16:10outcome. And that's true in school, it's
- 16:13true in your career, it's true in business.
- 16:17But love is not earned by performance.
- 16:21You cannot work someone into emotional availability.
- 16:26And when you raise your standards, you'll often find
- 16:30that you'll feel lonely before you start to feel free, because
- 16:34your nervous system is used to being occupied and your heart is
- 16:39used to being in a cycle. And your identity may be used to
- 16:43being the one who holds everything together.
- 16:46So when you stop doing that, it feels empty.
- 16:51But this emptiness that you're feeling, it's not failure, it's
- 16:56space. It's opportunity.
- 16:59This is where your life upgrades.
- 17:03Now here's a question I want you to answer in the comments.
- 17:07Have your standards changed in the last year?
- 17:11And if so, what is the biggest thing you no longer tolerate?
- 17:17That question alone can help you reflect on your own evolution.
- 17:21Now let's move into what you can actually do.
- 17:25Because inside without action is only entertainment, right?
- 17:28And we're not here just to be entertained.
- 17:30We are here to evolve #1 slow down attraction.
- 17:36If you're high functioning, you're probably used to fast
- 17:39results, right? But emotional safety cannot be
- 17:43rushed. Now chemistry, Oh, that's real
- 17:45fast, right? Like you could feel that
- 17:47instantly. But character that is revealed
- 17:51over time. So I invite you to slow down, to
- 17:56not rush intimacy, to not rush commitment, and definitely not
- 18:02to rush access to your heart. Let consistency earn closeness,
- 18:09OK #2 y'all know I love data, OK?
- 18:16In relationships anyway. Observe patterns, not the
- 18:21promises, OK? A lot of emotionally unavailable
- 18:25people are very good with words, and when they feel you pulling
- 18:30away, they're going to turn it up a notch.
- 18:34But love is not proven in what someone says during conflict.
- 18:40It's proven in what they do repeatedly.
- 18:43So I want you to pay attention to follow through.
- 18:46Accountability, emotional responsiveness, reliability, and
- 18:52repair. Those things are going to be
- 18:55essential for you to have a full and accurate picture of who it
- 18:59is that you're dealing with. All right #3 we're going to stop
- 19:05auditioning for love. This is huge because if you are
- 19:09constantly trying to be the right version of yourself so
- 19:12someone will choose you, you're not in a relationship, baby.
- 19:15You are in a performance and you deserve to be chosen while you
- 19:21are at rest, not only while you are achieving #4 we want to
- 19:28build internal safety. I want you to ask yourself, what
- 19:34does safety feel like in my body?
- 19:36For some women, safety feels like calm predictability.
- 19:42It feels like peace. Not needing to over explain, no
- 19:46need to chase. But because that's unfamiliar,
- 19:50they confuse it with the lack of a spark.
- 19:53So your work is to learn. Peace is allowed to be
- 19:57attractive, consistency is allowed to be desirable.
- 20:02Stable love is allowed to feel good #5 strengthen spiritual
- 20:11attachment. If you're a woman of faith, you
- 20:14have to ask, am I attached to God or I am?
- 20:18Am I attached to God or am I attached to outcomes?
- 20:22Because when you're attached to outcomes, you will tolerate what
- 20:26violates you in the name of promise.
- 20:29But when you're securely attached to God, you don't have
- 20:33to force what's not aligned. You can release with peace, you
- 20:38can walk away with clarity, and you can choose yourself without
- 20:44guilt. Let me close like this.
- 20:49If you're a high functioning woman and you've been blaming
- 20:53yourself for what you tolerated, I want you to take a breath.
- 20:58Not because you're crazy, not because you're weak, not because
- 21:02you're too much and you are not the problem because you love
- 21:06deeply. But you may be healing a nervous
- 21:09system that learn to survive. You may be healing attachment
- 21:14patterns that were formed before you had the language for them.
- 21:19You may be healing the part of you that confused endurance with
- 21:23love. And healing doesn't mean that
- 21:25you become cold. Healing means you become clear.
- 21:30Healing means you stop negotiating your needs.
- 21:33Healing means you stop proving your worth.
- 21:36Healing means you choose environments and partners that
- 21:41match your growth. And if you're listening to this
- 21:46and you know it's time for you to evolve your patterns, let
- 21:50this be your reminder. You are allowed to want more.
- 21:56You are allowed to require more. You are allowed to leave what
- 22:01costs you your peace. As we approach the one year
- 22:06anniversary of Rise and Thrive, we're closing out this season
- 22:11with conversations that help you reflect, reset, and rise.
- 22:16And if this episode spoke to you, subscribe, share it with
- 22:21someone who needs it and drop your answer in the comments.
- 22:26What is 1 pattern you're breaking this year?
- 22:30I'm Doctor Jane Nicole, and I'll see you in the next episode.
