- 0:00Ground signal markets? Wednesday, October 14,
- 0:032026. I'm your host, and this is the Deep Dive.
- 0:06Today is a high signal day. September CPI data
- 0:09dropped at 8 .30 Eastern. The number markets
- 0:11have been waiting on for weeks. Bank earnings
- 0:13from JP Morgan and Wells Fargo are already in.
- 0:16Brazil's runoff clock is ticking. Houthi pressure
- 0:18keeps Brent above $105. And the Fed's October
- 0:22meeting is two weeks out. Ground state is signal
- 0:25four. Elevated, directional, actionable. Let's
- 0:28get into it. Equities. Signal 3. S &P 500, tracked
- 0:33through SPY, is trading at $775 .55, down about
- 0:39a third of a percent on the session. Intraday
- 0:42range was 774 to 780. Volume is moderate. Asian
- 0:47markets closed mixed. Nikkei 225 settled at 67
- 0:51,744, a slight pullback as U .S. futures dipped
- 0:55on the CPI print. Hang Seng closed at 24 ,349,
- 0:59roughly flat after a choppy morning session in
- 1:02Hong Kong. European markets are still open, with
- 1:04DAX tracking modestly lower alongside the bond
- 1:07sell -off. The headline story driving equities
- 1:09today is the CPI read. A 3 .7 % year -over -year
- 1:13print came in hotter than the 3 .6 % consensus.
- 1:16Markets initially dipped, stabilized, then sold
- 1:19off slightly into mid -morning. The hot number
- 1:21complicates the Fed's hold narrative going into
- 1:24October 27th. Q3 earnings season is providing
- 1:26a partial offset. JP Morgan reported $15 .3 billion
- 1:31in net income, $5 .57 per share on $50 .2 billion
- 1:35in revenue. A clean beat. Wells Fargo came in
- 1:38at $6 billion in net income, $1 .87 per share,
- 1:42up 13 % year over year. Both names are trading
- 1:46higher in a down tape, which signals the market
- 1:48is still rewarding quality. What to watch. The
- 1:52next wave of bank earnings runs through Thursday
- 1:54and Friday. CPI reaction continues to settle.
- 1:57If the S &P holds 770 at close, the dip stays
- 2:01contained. Fixed income and rates. Signal 4.
- 2:04The September CPI print is the market event of
- 2:07the week, and it came in hot. CPI, you rose 0
- 2:10.6 % month over month on a seasonally adjusted
- 2:12basis. Year over year, that's 3 .7%. Core CPI,
- 2:17which strips food and energy. rose 2 .6 % year
- 2:21over year. Both numbers came in above consensus.
- 2:24What does this mean for the Fed? The October
- 2:2727th through 28th FOMC meeting is now on a knife's
- 2:31edge. Before the print, markets were pricing
- 2:34roughly 80 % probability of a hold and 20 % for
- 2:37a 25 basis point hike. That hike probability
- 2:40will move higher today as traders reprice the
- 2:44terminal rate path. The 10 -year Treasury yield
- 2:47was tracking around 4 .28 % heading into the
- 2:50session. That number will almost certainly drift
- 2:53higher today, given the CPI shock. The 30 -year
- 2:56was at 4 .85 % as of last week's close. Expect
- 3:00pressure there as well. The fixed income signal
- 3:02is elevated. A hotter -than -expected CPI red,
- 3:05a Fed meeting 14 days away, and a market that
- 3:09had priced in a soft landing, that's a volatile
- 3:11combination. What to watch? How does the 10 -year
- 3:15respond into the close? Any print above 4 .40
- 3:19% would signal serious repricing of the FOMC
- 3:22path. ECB meets October 28th through 29th as
- 3:26well. Back -to -back central bank risk next week.
- 3:29Currencies and FX. Signal 3. The dollar is holding
- 3:34firm on the CPI hot print. DXY is at 102 .22,
- 3:38up fractionally on the day. A hotter CPI typically
- 3:41supports dollar strength as rate expectations
- 3:44shift hawkish. That dynamic is playing out exactly
- 3:46as you'd expect. EM currency snapshot as of this
- 3:50morning. USD to PEN 3 .44. Peruvian Sol holding
- 3:54steady. No domestic catalyst. External pressure
- 3:57from dollar strength is the dominant factor.
- 3:59USD to BRL 5 .02. Brazilian real is range -bound
- 4:04but sensitive. The October 25th runoff between
- 4:07Lula and Flavio Bolsonaro has markets watching
- 4:09closely. Bolsonaro leads in prediction markets
- 4:12and polling. A Bolsonaro win would likely rally
- 4:14Brazilian assets. A Lula win would increase fiscal
- 4:17uncertainty. The Real is trading at a modest
- 4:20risk premium relative to fundamentals. USD to
- 4:23MXN 18 .36. Peso is stable. Banxico has held
- 4:28rates steady, and the carry trade is intact for
- 4:31now. USD to COP 3 ,181. Colombian peso under
- 4:36mild pressure from global dollar demand and domestic
- 4:38security concerns. What to watch? The dollar's
- 4:41reaction to FOMC repricing. If the 10 year moves
- 4:45past 4 .40%, look for renewed EM currency weakness
- 4:49across the board. Penn and BRL are the most exposed
- 4:53given election and political risk overlays. Crypto,
- 4:56signal two. Crypto is soft today, but not alarming.
- 4:59Bitcoin is at $82 ,394, down 0 .95 % on the session.
- 5:06Ethereum at 2 ,455. down 1 .8%. Solana at 104
- 5:12.93, down 1 .6%. The pattern is familiar, risk
- 5:18-off equities hotter than expected macro data,
- 5:20and crypto pulls back modestly in sympathy. No
- 5:23structural breakdown, no exchange stress, just
- 5:26the normal correlation bleed when the macro shock
- 5:28hits. The key narrative remains unchanged. Bitcoin
- 5:32is holding the 80 ,000 to 85 ,000 range that
- 5:34has defined October. It hasn't broken higher
- 5:36toward 90 ,000. and it hasn't cracked lower towards
- 5:39$75 ,000. Sideways accumulation or distribution,
- 5:43the next catalyst will clarify which. What to
- 5:46watch. Any CPI -driven Fed repricing that pushes
- 5:49the 10, year above 4 .40%, will likely apply
- 5:53additional pressure on crypto. Conversely, if
- 5:56equities stabilize into the close, crypto should
- 5:58stabilize as well. Signal remains at 2, low urgency,
- 6:03but worth monitoring the correlation. Commodities,
- 6:06signal 3. Energy is elevated. Gold is holding.
- 6:10Brent crude is trading between $105 and $106
- 6:14per barrel. WTI is at $94 to $95. The Houthi
- 6:18risk premium, estimated by Goldman Sachs at over
- 6:21$20 per barrel, continues to underpin prices.
- 6:24The EIA's October 2026 outlook explicitly flags
- 6:28heightened tanker risk in the Red Sea as a driver
- 6:31of elevated shipping costs and oil price premiums.
- 6:33There is no de -escalation signal from the conflict.
- 6:37Saudi Houthi dynamics remain unresolved, and
- 6:39shipping insurers are still pricing routes around
- 6:42the Cape of Good Hope rather than through Bab
- 6:43el -Mandeb. Gold is at $4 ,161 to $4 ,177 per
- 6:49ounce. The metal is finding support from both
- 6:52the geopolitical backdrop and the rate uncertainty.
- 6:55Higher yields are a headwind, but haven demand
- 6:57is offsetting. Gold's resilience above $4 ,100
- 7:00is notable given the dollar's strength today.
- 7:02What to watch? Any ceasefire signal or Houthi
- 7:06de -escalation would remove the risk premium
- 7:07from Brent quickly. Absent that, energy stays
- 7:10bid. A break above 4 ,200 in gold would signal
- 7:14real safe haven acceleration. Mobility and opportunity
- 7:17signal. Signal 2. Three items on the mobility
- 7:20board today. First, Thailand. The destination
- 7:24Thailand visa remains active and operational.
- 7:27The five -year multiple entry visa with 180 DayStays
- 7:31remains one of the cleanest long -stay options
- 7:33globally for remote workers and digital nomads.
- 7:36No policy changes this week. Second, Malaysia.
- 7:39DE Rantau, the digital nomad pass, is experiencing
- 7:42processing delays due to reported technical issues
- 7:45on the MDEC platform. The program is officially
- 7:48active, but applicants are encountering friction.
- 7:51If you're targeting Malaysia, plan for delays
- 7:54and have backup documentation ready. Third, United
- 7:57States. The State Department expanded its online
- 8:00presence screening on October 1st to include
- 8:02ITN and TD visa categories, adding to the March
- 8:052026 expansion that covered FMJH, 1B, and others.
- 8:10If you're managing a visa application or renewal
- 8:12in any of these categories, expect social media
- 8:15and online presence review as part of the process.
- 8:18This is directionally more restrictive, not less.
- 8:21Mobility signal stays at 2. Operational developments
- 8:24worth tracking. but no emergency level changes.
- 8:28The U .S. visa screening expansion is the trend
- 8:31to watch. If it continues broadening, it becomes
- 8:33a signal three item by end of quarter. Forward
- 8:36signal, three items for the next 24 to 72 hours.
- 8:40Item one, FOMC repricing, signal four. Today's
- 8:44hot CPI print will continue to move through markets
- 8:46into tomorrow. The 10 -year yield path, equity
- 8:50futures, and rate expectations are all in motion.
- 8:53Watch how the Fed's most hawkish members respond
- 8:56in public statements. Any hint of willingness
- 8:58to hike on October 27th changes the calculus
- 9:01significantly. Item two, Brazil runoff signal
- 9:05four. The October 25th runoff between Flavio
- 9:08Bolsonaro and Lula is 11 days out. Bolsonaro
- 9:11leads in polls and prediction markets. Brazilian
- 9:13assets, equities, the real, are trading a Bolsonaro
- 9:17premium. Any polling shift or security incident
- 9:20in Brazil between now and the 25th will move
- 9:22the BRL. This is a sustained watch item. Item
- 9:26three, bank earnings continuation, signal three.
- 9:30JP Morgan and Wells Fargo beat today. Goldman
- 9:33Sachs, Citigroup, and Bank of America report
- 9:35later this week. If the quality beats continue,
- 9:38earnings season provides a floor for equities
- 9:40even as macro uncertainty rises. A miss or weak
- 9:44guidance from any major would amplify the CPI
- 9:46-driven sell -off. That's the signal for Wednesday,
- 9:48October 14th. Markets are elevated but not in
- 9:51free fall. CPI is the dominant force today. Brazil
- 9:55and the Fed are the dominant forces for the next
- 9:57two weeks. Stay positioned. Stay informed. Ground
- 10:01Signal Markets, out.
