- 2:29You know him, you love him. You already been the Gazette mail
- 2:30and late from time to time. It's Bill Lynch, good morning, Welcome
- 2:34to the show, sir. Welcome, love and no those are two words
- 2:37I don't get a lot of thanks for having me. We're gonna have a
- 2:40little fun today, because that's what we do on Friday Funhouse. We're gonna
- 2:44get to know you and you get to play ten questions. Looking forward to
- 2:47it. I have studied you study, but you don't know what the questions
- 2:50are. But you studied previous shows, all right, So we get to
- 2:53know you a little bit later on. So Bill, I appreciate you being
- 2:55able to school first to Chris Lawrence now to talk high school football. Chris,
- 2:59good morning, welcome to the show, and happy belated birthday. Thank
- 3:04you, thank you very much. We were just having a big conversation about
- 3:08birthdays and about how when you get to be our age minds tomorrow and when
- 3:14we get to be our age, we just don't really care anymore. Yeah,
- 3:16I appreciate everybody's sentiments, but I frankly had forgotten about it until my
- 3:23kids brought it up. Really, so yeah, I mean, the last
- 3:25time that I had a birthday that mattered, I think was when I was
- 3:29twelve, because I think there was a cake and some presents. After that,
- 3:34it was just like just another day, all right. So high school
- 3:38football, we got it for you tonight. You're going out Wayne, heading
- 3:43out Wayne tonight to bring you a coverage of Nitro at the Wayne Pioneers.
- 3:47Important game for both teams and a big Cardinal Conference matchup. Of course,
- 3:52Nitro lost a heartbreaker at Chapmanville last week by one point in the last last
- 3:57seconds, so that makes two in a row. They've lost. Wayne's lost
- 4:00two in a row as well. Neither team, actually nobody and the Cardinal
- 4:03Conference wants to lose three in a row because you might not get an opportunity
- 4:08to get that one back down the stretch in the difficult Cardinal conference. So
- 4:12that one should be a good matchup tonight and we'll find out what these two
- 4:15teams have and who wants it more. That's really what it will come down
- 4:17to. So we'll be on the air at six thirty tonight with a seven
- 4:20o'clock kickoff. WAA likes to do those seven o'clock kickoffs, and I'm a
- 4:24big fan of them as well, since I got to get up early in
- 4:27being here tomorrow morning to do West Virginia Outdoors. So, and it's always
- 4:30fun going to Wayne. I've I've been there. It is a wonderful place.
- 4:32Good folks out there, my kind of people. How are the hot
- 4:34dogs concession stands? That's a big thing with me. They're always good.
- 4:39I've never found a hot dog. I wouldn't try so stuff I don't know.
- 4:45I was. Yeah, the last hot dog I had at a game
- 4:48was at Hoover and they had the works. Yeah, they had the full
- 4:51hot dog bar there. So yeah, it was. They were very good
- 4:55at Hoover, at that brand new state Hoover. Yes, indeed, all
- 4:58right, So speaking of us for the outdoors. Well, actually, we'll
- 5:02have a couple of guys on from the Greenbrier to mar The Greenbriers actually having
- 5:06a hunting and fishing show this weekend, so we'll talk about what they've got
- 5:11happening down there. And then afterwards, there was this really interesting story last
- 5:16week. You might have heard about it on the news. There was a
- 5:18silver alert issued for a man who got lost over in Poconnas County while he
- 5:25was squirrel hunting. He was found, He was okay. In fact,
- 5:29he wasn't found. He just walked out anyway, why y'all looking for me?
- 5:32It had been gone for twenty four hours. But we're going to talk
- 5:35to his nephew. Who's gonna who's gonna tell us about that. It was
- 5:40pretty harrowing ordeal for the family and for this man as well. And then
- 5:43we're going to talk to a group that was part of the search effort there
- 5:46that does this anytime there's a there's a big search effort going on, and
- 5:49we'll talk about how they put that together. It's a volunteer organization. They
- 5:54put together these search and rescue things when we got somebody missing in big country
- 5:58like they have over in Poconnas County. So there's a happy end of you
- 6:00to the story. So we'll talk about how it. I'll unfold it tomorrow
- 6:02morning, and that's at seven o six tomorrow morning. It is, and
- 6:08after the high school game that I stick around because we get Fred and Dave
- 6:11a high school game night. Getting's caught up on all of the games from
- 6:13around to Stay to West Virginia. Yeah, and I'm heading down tomorrow to
- 6:16your alma mater to see Virginia Tech take on Marshall. I'm looking forward to
- 6:19that. Did you finally found somebody to let you in the tail game?
- 6:23I got three or four invites, so I'll be sampling breakfast all over the
- 6:26green Light. I love this. He just goes on. He says,
- 6:28Hey, I'm coming to the game. Can anybody let me in the tailgate
- 6:30party for Virginia Tech? And Marty never let me do every time I go,
- 6:33I do that. I've not done that yet for a Morgantown game.
- 6:35I'm going to do that next time I go to Morgantown. I just haven't
- 6:39been to a Morgantown game that I've not worked in a long time. So
- 6:43maybe the next time I go to Morgantown. I'll do the same thing.
- 6:46I'll just put out the clarion call that I love to drop by your tailgate
- 6:49and eat some of your food if you wouldn't mind. That's what you do,
- 6:51all right, Chris. We appreciate it as always. Man, Thanks
- 6:55a lot, all right, guess Chris Lawrence again and it's Nitro and Wayne
- 6:59Tonight coverage starts at six thirty. The entire crew will be there for That's
- 7:04Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charlesty Main Association is here with this week's adot Me
- 7:08please pet of the week. Hannah, Good morning, How are you,
- 7:11Hannah? And great? How are you? And my guest is Bill Lynch
- 7:16from the Gazette Mayo, Bill, Hannah, Hannah, Bill, Hannah,
- 7:19how are you? I'm good? How are you am? All right?
- 7:23I'm all right. So the pictures posted as it always is Dave Allen Radio
- 7:26on Facebook and at Dave A seventy on Twitter. I'm sorry x the artist
- 7:30formerly known as Twitter. It's the story of Athena. Athena is a beautiful
- 7:35dog. Take it from there, Hannah, and tell us about Athena.
- 7:39All right. Athena is one year old and she is a pretty pretty pretty
- 7:46like if how'd you guess? She's pretty clearly like some form of pity,
- 7:54like a bully or a pity or something. But she is very, very
- 7:58sweet. She is not sikes yet, but she will be, and she
- 8:05has shown to be housebroken. She is playful with other dogs, so she
- 8:11does well and play groups with the other dogs, and she does like the
- 8:15more playful dogs. So she does have a good energy level herself. So
- 8:20she could definitely use someone who has a yard, or if they don't have
- 8:24a yard, taking her to dog tarks or something often, because she just
- 8:28loves to run around and play. We consider her a weekend adventure. So
- 8:33she loved, like I said, to go like on walks and stuff like
- 8:39that. So she would be a good dog with someone who is more of
- 8:41an outdoorsy person or even if they're not, just as long as you have
- 8:46like a yard to let her get her energy out. But she is all
- 8:50around a really sweet girl. She when she first came in, actually she
- 8:54had some skin issues, but they were just allergies. She was surrendered to
- 9:00us. Dude, you're just not being able to afford the medical care.
- 9:03But we did take care of that. It was. It ended up just
- 9:05seeing some allergies and she had some skin issues going on that were just very
- 9:11clear. So she's looking a lot better now and she's ready for a home
- 9:16and we're hoping that she founds a really good one. Well, and again,
- 9:18I think it's support that you point out that I guess the previous owners
- 9:22did the right thing because they just couldn't afford the medicine for it. But
- 9:26I guess she doesn't need the medicine now. Her skin's cleared up from what
- 9:28you're telling on Sannah, it's in the process. That's still she still has
- 9:33a little bit of, you know, obvious signs of where she has the
- 9:37allergies on her skin. It was just really bad allergies that kind of escalated
- 9:41over time. But yeah, she definitely looks a lot better now. She's
- 9:46definitely growing some of her hair back and stuff, so she is ready for
- 9:48a home. Sure, So you mentioned that she likes long walks or likes
- 9:52walks. How about her astrological sign? Is she more of a cancer and
- 9:56maybe capricorn? The are important people think about those things. I mean,
- 10:01how you mess with a dog could be you know, whether you're a water
- 10:03sign. Well, she she was born estimated, so we think, and
- 10:11so the owner had, you know, told us originally she was born in
- 10:16September of twenty twenty two. Okay, so that would mean she's either a
- 10:20virgo or a libra depending on what her birthday is. Today could be your
- 10:26birthday. Yeah in theory. Well well, and I like he said that
- 10:31she the sign of water. No, she's housebroken, so she's not the
- 10:35sign of water. Uh. Your guys, you guys folks, Hannah posting
- 10:41on your social media that Fix Charleston is going to be opening back up?
- 10:43What exactly is Fixed Charleston and how do you work with them? And uh?
- 10:48And how do others in the community work with this organization? Tell us
- 10:52about them? So Fix Charleston is a low cost well miss clinic. They
- 10:58I believe cob third, they're going to start offering stay and newter again for
- 11:03cats and dogs. They'll have wellness appointments again, so like basic illness exams.
- 11:09So if you're dogs, you know, like coughing really bad sneezing,
- 11:13if they've got something going on, you can book an appointment with Fixed Charleston.
- 11:18And then we also have radiology stuff now and some other services that you
- 11:24could definitely call and ask. We did post a phone number and everything on
- 11:28there, so if you have any questions or if you want to make an
- 11:33appointment ahead of time, go ahead and do so. We are so happy
- 11:37to have that back open. And I saw in your Facebook page that you
- 11:41guys got a lot of help out of the shelter this week. Hannah's part
- 11:43of the United Ways Day of Caring. That was pretty cool to have some
- 11:46people out there volunteering. Yes, so every year United Way will come out
- 11:52and they will help us. I know they do that for other places as
- 11:56well. I'm pretty sure, but they do always plan on coming to us.
- 12:00So sorry, if you hear my dogs in the back, see see
- 12:03Bill. Just so you know, that's not at the shelter. This is
- 12:07at her house. She doesn't actually go into work until later. This isn't
- 12:09Hannah's house. That was what you're hearing. Man. How many how many
- 12:11dogs do you have at home? Is that that many? A whole bunch?
- 12:18Yes, I do, I have a lot. I have quite I
- 12:20have a couple of cats as well. I'll make it work, okay,
- 12:24but it is it is nice that the folks come out and volunteer as part
- 12:28of the not not only in your place, but all the others as well.
- 12:31Before we let you go, what else are you in need of at
- 12:33the shelter. You guys are always collecting things like blankets or anything in particular
- 12:37that you need. Now. Yes, so I know that we're still needing
- 12:41some blankets and sheets. We always are needing those, especially at this time.
- 12:46We've been using them a little more than normal and where we've been so,
- 12:50you know, at max capacity lately. But we have gotten some animals
- 12:54out, so we're really really happy about that. But blankets and sheets,
- 12:58I know that we could use some like cat litter trays and some like paper
- 13:05cows and stuff like that. So if you have anything that you want to
- 13:07bring up in your addict that you you know you just don't use any more
- 13:11of them, that would be amazing and we will accept that. Well,
- 13:15you got a text here before you, Hannah, because you always do,
- 13:16because you're a star. And the text says Dave Salt that the shelters asking
- 13:20for peanut butter. I like peanut butter. Kroger has their peanut butter for
- 13:24ninety nine cents each when you buy five or more yes, yes, we
- 13:28definitely need peanut butter. I know that we've been trying to get some more
- 13:31stuff to do enrichment for the dog, so filling cons with peanut butter.
- 13:37We have these Frizzee trays that we like smear peanut butter on and hang onto
- 13:41their kennels. So we definitely use a lot of peanut butter and if you
- 13:43want to bring that up, we actually are in real need of that.
- 13:46You can also attract members of the media with that too, with peanut butter
- 13:50on a frizzes put it out frizzies out in the yard, and I appreciate
- 13:56it very much. I appreciate you being here. We'll talk again soon.
- 13:58Thanks a lot. Thank you. So I hand a guard again from the
- 14:01Canal Charles, you made association with our adopt me please Pet of the Week
- 14:05now again. It's Athena, a very very sweet dog kid and dog friendly
- 14:11and cat friendly as well. Housebroken. Her story was that the previous owners
- 14:15said that she had a skin condition and that they were able to treat it,
- 14:18but they weren't not that they wanted to financial position to be able to
- 14:22afford it, and so so they brought her back and the folks at the
- 14:24shelter have worked with her. Apparently your skin is cleared up, you know
- 14:28for the most part. Not anything that's gonna you know, kill her or
- 14:31you or the kids or anything like that. Just you know. But but
- 14:33she would be a fantastic dog. And you saw the picture, Bill,
- 14:37I mean, that's that's a beautiful dog. It's a cute dog, and
- 14:39it'd be a great, you know, a great addition to your household.
- 14:41You can kind of hang out with a dog. And it's only what's a
- 14:43year old, which means some of this, some of the puppy problem,
- 14:46the story kind of going away, right, So a slightly older dog has
- 14:50a little time to settle into things. Yeah, it's like when we have
- 14:52the older dogs on here, because Hannah's provided us with dogs in the past
- 14:56that are just kind of like, you know, this dog is old.
- 14:58He's hand eleven years old. He didn't want to do anything to send around
- 15:01and watch TV. And I'm like, yeah, dogs, me me too,
- 15:05me too. Five eighty Live has brought to you by Pinnacle Consultants,

- 18:41there is a big event coming to the coliscum A Convention Center on that's a
- 18:45Tuesday night, and they're bringing back some of the not so old days of
- 18:49the classic Cafe Samino. Now, this is a benefit for Habitat for Humanity.
- 18:53Andy Blackwood, who's the CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Putnam County,
- 18:57joins us right now. Andy, good morning, welcome to me. Thank
- 19:00you so much, thank you for being here. So, Cafe Sabino,
- 19:03I mentioned earlier one of the more iconic eateries in West Virginia, which sadly
- 19:07has gone away, but you folks are bringing it back into Charleston for one
- 19:11night Tuesday, October. The tenth starts at six at the Elk River Atrium
- 19:15at the Coliseum and Convention Center. That's right, yeah, Tim and Melody,
- 19:19the original owners and chefs at Cafe Semino, will be back with us,
- 19:26as well as their executive chef Oscar, preparing a great selection from their
- 19:32traditional menu. And I'm looking at that menu because Bill and I are food
- 19:36guys. This is what we do. So got your salon and bread.
- 19:41Of course, they're famous Samino, meatballs, braschetta, mushroom, fed up,
- 19:45pasta, shrimp scampy, chicken parmesan, and desserts by Chef Todd Jones
- 19:51of Center Plate. This is the good stuff, it is. And you
- 19:52know the nice thing is you don't have to pick just one. You can
- 19:57sample everything that's air, get full plates everything and just gonna you know,
- 20:03roll out of the place uff you're done. Yes you can. I don't
- 20:06know if Uber offers a rolling like a wheelbarrel service or not to bring like
- 20:11like the big push in the back of the truck and haul you home.
- 20:17And the great thing about this is proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. And I
- 20:21know a lot of fine sponsors are making that possible. Zem and Arketects and
- 20:25Engineers, Rolins, Clevin, Rolins, Builder's first Choice, Beckilly Architecture and
- 20:30Engineering, Omni Strategic Technology, Spoke of Value Bank and hosts of others all
- 20:33getting involved Andy to help out a great cost. Yes they are. You
- 20:37know, this is our single largest fundraiser each year and it all all the
- 20:44proceeds go to help us support building affordable housing and can on Putnham Counties,
- 20:49So the funds stay here locally and that's a great and give us the overall
- 20:53mission statement of habitat for getting so we believe that everyone deserves a decent place
- 20:59to live. We give a hand up, not a hand out. Folks
- 21:03qualify for who qualify for the program are able to purchase their home through US
- 21:08zero percent interest goods. That's awesome. Now work, Where do people get
- 21:14tickets for this? If you can go to our website HF HKP dot org
- 21:18slash a taste of but you're probably gonna want to get them early because this
- 21:22is gonna be those This is gonna be one of those premier events. Bill
- 21:26and you know you cover entertainment things like that in Charleston. This is going

- 24:33State University and the President of West Virginia State, Eric Cage is with us
- 24:37right now. President Cage, good morning, how are you, sir?
- 24:41Good morning, Dave I'm doing very well. How are you I'm doing find
- 24:44My co host today is Bill Lynch of The Gazette Mail esteemed writer extraordinaire,
- 24:48Bill using these words, I don't know the fifth they need. Good morning,
- 24:53Bill, how are you? Good morning. I'm glad to be here.
- 24:56Nice to talk to you, and prays. There is nothing like a
- 24:59homecoming, but not just the game, but everything that goes along with it.
- 25:03While all you got going on, Yeah, Dave, it's it's really
- 25:07an exciting time here in our campus, in institute, you know. Homecoming
- 25:11kicked off yesterday. We had the coronation of our Queen, our King and
- 25:15our Queen. We also had our President's Circle reception where we recognize some of
- 25:19our most generous donors. And today we have our ROTC Hall of Fame induction.
- 25:26We'll have a Greek cookout, our volleyball game against Willing University, and
- 25:32we'll also have an alumni dinner tonight and tomorrow. And tomorrow, which is
- 25:36a big day, we'll have a parade at noon which we invite all members
- 25:40of the community to come out and join us. Will have a game at
- 25:42six pm against Glenville State University, which will be followed by fireworks and throughout
- 25:48the day, Dave. On our campus, we're going to have a family
- 25:51fund zone, so there'll be a lot of things to do for families.
- 25:55So please we invite all members of the community to come out to our campus
- 25:59and celebrate home with us. And I would imagine all these family things that
- 26:02you're talking about, President, all those are free to the public, right,
- 26:06Yes they are. So I mean you're looking for something into weather.
- 26:08I mean, President Kge, you couldn't ask for better weather. I mean,
- 26:11this weather's going to be fantastic. It's actually going to be a little
- 26:15bit cooler tomorrow. What I understand that it is today and I heard this
- 26:18morning and temperature gonna be around seventy for a high tomorrow, perfect fault.
- 26:22And tomorrow is officially, I think the first day of fall. I think
- 26:23it's like two fifty am. I think is when it is today. Yeah,
- 26:29so there you go. So you couldn't ask for better. It's gonna
- 26:30be great weather, President. Yeah, it's just special order just for our
- 26:33homecoming. You got you got to connections and you know, President, all
- 26:41all the homecomings, doesn't that are special. But I've been told by people
- 26:45that attend West Virginia State, that you guys really do it up right there,
- 26:49and that they're because of the history of West Virginia State that you it
- 26:55just it kind of takes it to another level. And as far as the
- 26:59college is in institutions of higher learning in West Virginia goes I don't know if
- 27:03there's anybody I'm a marshal guy, but I don't know if there's anybody in
- 27:07the state that is more proud of their of their campus and their school and
- 27:11their time there. What the alumni of West Virginia State are. You are
- 27:15absolutely right, Dave. And look what makes us so special here at West
- 27:19Virginia State University is that when you come and become part of the West Virginia
- 27:25State University community, you become a part of a family. And we really
- 27:30take a great pride in that we are a small community where everybody knows your
- 27:34name. And I I just marvel when I talk to our alumni when they
- 27:38come back on campus because they have so many fond memories that took place on
- 27:44this campus and those memories are are deeply embedded in our history, in our
- 27:48heritage. So it is homecoming is a very special special time for us at
- 27:52the university, and again I invite all members of the community to come out
- 27:56and join in with us in this very very special occasion for us here at
- 28:02West Virginia State. Well, President Cage, it's always a pleasure to have
- 28:07you on the show. Best of luck with everything, and I know you
- 28:10guys are gonna have a big old party over there. We're gonna have you
- 28:11on again real soon. Because there's some things in the news. I try

- 28:18news. But I'll get with your people about maybe having you on one day
- 28:21next week to talk about some situations with some land grants and some funding.
- 28:25But we'll put that aside for today. I'll reach out to your folks and
- 28:26try to have you on maybe one day next week to talk about that.
- 28:30How's that. Well, we appreciate it, Dave very much in Bill and
- 28:32it's great to meet you as well. Virtually. Okay, all right,

- 34:13a cool tone I went a couple of years ago. It's if you even
- 34:15have a remote interest in, like if you were like a frustrated band geek
- 34:20like I was from high school. I was terrible. I used to I
- 34:23was a baritone. They let me march with its to basically helped fill out
- 34:27the ranks. I didn't play. I just held the thing. It just
- 34:30kind of cradled this baritone. It's like a music video basically, it was.
- 34:32That was what I did, right, But you know, I get
- 34:35the whole idea of how hard the kids. Yeah, and there's a lot
- 34:38of energy there. It's a lot of fun, all right. So let's
- 34:42talk about Bill Lynch. Now, where are you? Where are you from?
- 34:45Originally? Originally I grew up in Parisburg, Virginia, which most of
- 34:49you, if you think about it really carefully, is also known as the
- 34:52wedding capital of West Virginia. It was the first county seat across the board.
- 34:54Yeah, that was a thing. It was. That was the thing.
- 34:57Most of my sister's marriage just took place there because I mean, no
- 35:00really, I mean back in the day, you could cross over the border
- 35:04and go to like, you know, paris Burg, Grundy, and I
- 35:07think there was a couple of other places that that's what people used to do
- 35:10because you didn't have I don't know whether it's still a thing or not,
- 35:14but you didn't have to There wasn't like a waiting period you could just go
- 35:16and it's one day and you were sure you go. You'd go to the
- 35:21municipal building that judge and waves wand at you, and then you go off
- 35:23the street to Papa's Pizza. You can get a slice and because nothing says
- 35:27romance like anchovies, Nothing says romance like a slice with anchovies on it.
- 35:30Absolutely. So, now do you have you've done some radio, haven't you?
- 35:36Off and on? I've been in and out of radio for years.
- 35:37Okay, all right, well now you're back in its day. So so
- 35:42how did you end up here? A series of bad marriages? Okay,
- 35:45all right? Good? Have you met my sister? Yeah? Well,
- 35:50no, I moved up here in two thousand and three. Actually, I
- 35:52followed a job at west Real Public Broadcasting. I had had an ex wife
- 35:58and some kids, and the she'd moved up to the Charleston area from back
- 36:00from Baltimore, and I wasn't in Baltimore. She moved to Baltimore and then
- 36:05moved back and then moved up to here from where I was living. And
- 36:07so I moved to Charleston and took a job there and I've been here ever
- 36:10since. And so you write this, you're a writer for the Gazette mail
- 36:14yep, and you do other things or I do everything. Really, everybody's
- 36:21got two and three and four jobs. I mean, people ask me what
- 36:23I had. Somebody yesterday said, asked me what I did for a living.
- 36:27I said, well, what time of day is it, and I'll
- 36:29tell you what job I have at that particular time. Right now, I'm
- 36:30nine to ten. I'm a radio gap right right, So you know I
- 36:34actually had kind of a day job these days. Uh with West Appolic Broadcasting
- 36:37nine. I produced show called Inside Appalachia Public Affairs Sunday morning show. You
- 36:42if you're into that stuff, we're on. But so you know Adam Harris,
- 36:45I do know Adam. He's I can't stand at him. Was one
- 36:51of my best friends. He's actually been a co host here before I can
- 36:52see it. He's you know, he's an ash with the stuff. He's
- 36:54been doing Mountain Stage almost as long as I've been in Charleston, really every
- 37:00when he was when he was an intern back there and was running backstage making
- 37:02sure people got to the airport. Now he used to head gather. Now
- 37:06he's in charge with all the power and now he's a wrestling announcer too,
- 37:08traveling all of the country announcer for ages. He loves that stuff. Yeah,
- 37:13he's fantastic at it too. So how did you get hooked up with
- 37:16the gazette mail and writing? Writing your stuff that you do for the paper
- 37:19that's two stories? Is there a wife involved in this one thing? There
- 37:22isn't? Okay? So uh? For for years, for a couple of
- 37:27years, I was writing for Graffiti back when it was something different than it
- 37:30is, and I wrote mostly feature stories kind of stuff when I do now,
- 37:34but they were a little more on the outside. I wrote about witchcraft
- 37:37school. I wrote about dwarf wrestling. I wrote about a retired adult film
- 37:43star who had relocated the area. She was really she was really into poker
- 37:46machines. Uh so, so I did some still can't. You can't make
- 37:51this stuff up? I didn't. Do. You still have her number?
- 37:52Because I'm looking for Friday co host. I'll see if I can find her.
- 37:55Okay, So mark that down, Jeff, We're gonna have a a
- 38:00former adult film star who as a poker machine addict as a guest host.
- 38:04All right on Friday. Find out that was about twenty years ago. I
- 38:06don't know where she is now. But I was writing for a little different
- 38:08znes and doing all kinds of like really strange overnight stuff, and I reached
- 38:14out to the Gazette and I wrote something for them, and they Doug and
- 38:17Brogno, who was the features editor of the guy who was in charge the
- 38:20entertainment section, wrote back and said, so, I need somebody to cover
- 38:22local music and stuff. Can you do that? I've I've been in town
- 38:27for a month. So I said yes. I lied, completely lied,
- 38:31totally lied. So what I did was I just looked around and talked.
- 38:35It turned out I was also at night working in books a million and the
- 38:37guy who was running the register was a guy named Patrick, and Patrick was
- 38:42in a band called Liquid Harvest. And I said, you're in a band.
- 38:44He's like, I am. I said, how about some free press.
- 38:46He says, let's have lunch. So he got his guys together.
- 38:50I sat down a table, I listened to them while they were talking about
- 38:53the band, and turned it in And that was my first article. And
- 38:57then Doug said, can you do it again? And so I did it
- 39:00again and again. Yeah, And that's how that's how that started. And
- 39:04then after a few years after several years. So twenty fifteen, at the
- 39:09end of that year, I had a really kind of rough season. I
- 39:14broke up with my girlfriend. We've been together for about four or five years,
- 39:19and going into the holidays, and I was just like this really kind
- 39:22of a shell of human being. I was sitting around the house eating lots
- 39:25and lots of Turkey Hill chocolate and peanut butter ice cream and watching endless episodes
- 39:30of the Office. Okay, the boss was trying to get me to come
- 39:34to a Christmas party. Uh, she was having in her house. It
- 39:38was for the for the office. You needed people to show up at.
- 39:40Getting people to a Christmas party at the boss's house is a little bit difficulty,
- 39:45and I was trying to you know, you're frown upon you going through
- 39:47their medicine cabinet. Don't ask me how you do and especially gets really weird
- 39:51when the when the boss is carpets white, and you're like, it's a
- 39:53bad idea. So I was like, you know, really kind of down
- 39:57on the dumps and was in a rut. I didn't want to do this
- 39:59thing. I got random email from an animal rights group in the United Kingdom.
- 40:05You may be the most interesting man in the world. I doubt it.
- 40:07But the thing is so they what they were doing was they were trying
- 40:09to get people with the first year, with the you know, New Year's
- 40:13resolutions, to give up eating meat for the month of January, to be
- 40:16a vegan for January. I can't say the word they call it. It
- 40:20was like, no, it's it sounds bad. It just sounds bad.
- 40:23But basically, I wanted you to be a vegan for a month, try
- 40:27it out, see if you liked it. Right about it? And my
- 40:29first response was no, you silly hippie, I'm not giving up. They
- 40:32again, Yeah, But then I sat down and thought about I said,
- 40:35do I know anything about vegans? And honestly I did. Mostly you see
- 40:37them on TV. Their skulls, their hypocrites, their jerks there. You
- 40:42know, they're comedy. But I thought, is that really true? And
- 40:45I was like maybe not. January is really slow in the features department because
- 40:49it's not a whole lot going on. So I asked my boss and said,
- 40:51hey, what if I did this thing? And she says, well,
- 40:53that's one article. I said, wait, wait, what if I
- 40:54did this every week for a month? And she's like, that's a little
- 40:59better. I thought, what if I did it for a year. She's
- 41:01like, no one's going to read about whether you give up eat meat for
- 41:05a year. And I said, what if I found something new each and
- 41:07every month, something I didn't know much about, and then I could spend
- 41:12a month learning about it. I could kind of get my hands into it.
- 41:14I could try to, you know, fumble my way through. It'd
- 41:15be a very personal experience and we'll see what happens. And she goes,
- 41:20Bill when you're running out of topics, the things you don't know about,
- 41:22it said, I could do this for life, and really I kind of
- 41:24have. Every month it's something different. I mean last month when I first
- 41:29come went, the column was on kind of on hiatus for about eight months.
- 41:32I picked it back up and I went did the distance run. And
- 41:37I had run the distance run, but I'd never went with a group.
- 41:38I'd never found myself a little tribe of people who would who would help me
- 41:43get over the hump to get to work. I mean to do this thing,
- 41:46and every month it's been. This month, I'm doing Brazilian jiu jitsu,
- 41:51which is terrifying. It is terrifying, but I mean, I didn't
- 41:54even know how to tie the belt. But it's it's been fun. I
- 41:59learned ab how to bake bake pies and now now you're talking my language,
- 42:02right, can bake pies? I did stand up comedy. I didn't and
- 42:07I wasn't terrible at I can see that I've done gardening. I tried doing
- 42:10a month of unplugging from social media that did not work. Also tried getting
- 42:15plugging a lay from electricity, which is really a bad time to do that
- 42:19when sleep out in your yard when it's the when cicadas come back into season.
- 42:23So my yard was like and I couldn't have enough people sleeping outside,
- 42:28and Charleston, we need to add to it and come on, come on,
- 42:30well to do it for fun? It wasn't fun. I'm terrible.
- 42:34It can't think so rough in it to me is staying in a hotel with
- 42:37an outdoor accent. That's rough for days, I could say. So,
- 42:42so you're chronicle though this health journey. I mean it started off as something
- 42:45that you were doing for for the job, you know, but but this
- 42:50is something that you actually live now because you don't run long distance runs and
- 42:53eat quarter pounders every day. I mean, so how difficult and how have
- 42:58you? Because I know and talking to you and actually reading your stuff that
- 43:00you are a lover of food and beverages. How do you how do you
- 43:04reconcile that? How how do you make that work? Because you have to?
- 43:07Well? All right, So a few years ago I had a really
- 43:12bad kind of I had a scare. I was on hypertension medicine. I
- 43:15was they had just put me on stuff for cholesterol, and then I had
- 43:19a bad scan with my kidneys and I was like what what? And I
- 43:22was like not, I didn't I'm not that old. I thought, my
- 43:25god, this is this is scary. So I freaked out and put myself
- 43:30onto a diet. I got a phone app that lets me track my food.
- 43:34It's the dullest way to lose weight, honestly, but it works.
- 43:37And then after I lost a few pounds, I needed something to deal with
- 43:42you know, pressure and stress and you know this and not just sitting in
- 43:45a desk all day. I started kind of getting into exercise. So I
- 43:47joined a CrossFit gym. It was was one of my one month projects.
- 43:51Because you know the cult of CrossFit, it's they're crazy, right, I
- 43:55said, let me let me embrace the crazy, which I have. I've
- 43:58still embraced the crazy. I'm still doing it. So I did that,
- 44:01and then to kind of leverage myself to keep going, I started looking for
- 44:05things to give me an excuse to It's not enough to be healthy, you
- 44:08need I need an excuse to do something. So I signed up for a
- 44:12thirteen mile Spartan race which those was called it called a Beast and then I
- 44:17trained like like I was rocky. I went, I did the CrossFit,
- 44:22I started running on the boulevard. I was doing weights. I was doing
- 44:24way too much, but I was watching what I ate. The pounds just
- 44:29disappeared. So I went from two hundred and sixty nine pounds to where I
- 44:31currently and I'm at one hundred and eighty two. It's incredible and I've maintained
- 44:37that now since uh twenty nineteen. That's awesome. I mean, it's that
- 44:42in congratulations on that tech says Marty Smith from ESPN is also from Parisburg,
- 44:46Virginia. Their accents are very different. Yeah, I'm a big fan of
- 44:51of Marty Smith and the gas that are on the SEC network. They're fantastic.
- 44:57So my old man was an English teacher again. All right, I'm
- 45:00gonna ask you this before we go to break. Then we can come back

- 47:49Bill Lynch is here, all right, tell us the story. What's
- 47:51the deal with the Captain America sharts fan? Okay? The T shirts started
- 47:53was kind of a kind of a Lucky T shirt thing. I've always had
- 47:55a Lucky T shirt, but it changes from generation to generation. One of
- 47:59them was like had like skulls on it one time when it was a bowling
- 48:01shirt. So a couple of years ago at a as a Christmas gift,
- 48:05my sister sent me a Captain America T shirt and I would wear these things
- 48:07on Thursdays, which were when my my section came out, when it was
- 48:10the most nerve wracking, when things would go wrong. If anything bad was
- 48:14gonna happen, it was gonna happen on Thursday. So it became Captain America
- 48:16T shirt Day because I needed it. When they started this column, they
- 48:20wanted to take my picture. Kay. I was horrified at the idea of
- 48:23my picture being in the paper because I was I was as I was,
- 48:28but they needed, we needed the art. I would wear the T shirt
- 48:30as a security blankets, a Lucky T shirt, and then and it kind
- 48:35of just took off from it. It took off until I was people saw
- 48:37me and these things all the time, and it became kind of like my
- 48:39calling so many how many do you have? Sixteen? I was gonna say,
- 48:42please, don't say one, sixteen sixteen out them? All right,
- 48:45So that's the story about, all right, I gotta get to ten questions,
- 48:46because all right, so there's ten questions. You're about to be asked
- 48:50a total of ten random questions. You don't do, not know what they
- 48:52are. You're not seeing them prior to this, you have no knowledge of
- 48:54them. For those of you as always listening at home, in the car,
- 48:57at work, no wagering. Okay, are you ready? Ye?
- 49:00All right? If you weren't known for wearing your Captain America T shirts,
- 49:05what other kind of shirts might you be known for? Or what else would
- 49:07be your trademarker? Perrel We kind of already touched on that. I would
- 49:09say, this denim jacket and me rocking this whole Canadian tuxedo thing. All
- 49:14right, your favorite stooge Mo Larry, Curly Shamperor, Curly Joe. Oh
- 49:17Mo, for sure. The one thing that absolutely totally freaks you out and
- 49:22can send you into hysterics. Tall heights. Still, I'm still working on
- 49:28heights. Okay, don't ever put what on your hamburger meat apparently, but
- 49:36that was a long time. Okay, I'm gonna say catch up. Really,
- 49:39I'm gonna catch up. Guy a man. You've interviewed some pretty famous
- 49:44people as they've rolled through the Canal Valley for concerts and whatnot. If you
- 49:47want to say this, you can. But if you don't, that's fine.
- 49:50Who was the one that was a complete jerk and you never want to
- 49:53talk to again? Oh wow? If you can't, I can't. Okay.
- 50:00If you're gonna incriminate yourself, I don't want you to do in the
- 50:04news lately. So all right, all right, all right, that's good.
- 50:06I'll give you a pass on that one. As a kid, your
- 50:07favorite TV show super Friends. It's an open bar. What are you going
- 50:14for? The high end bourbon? Actually? Because I can't afford it.
- 50:16Okay, let's just take the bottle in your denim. Your favorite teacher's name,
- 50:22Uh, missus Yelton. She was an English teacher. Of all my
- 50:25friends or family, this is you talking. If I'm in trouble, who
- 50:29is the least likely to come get me out of jail? Uh? Probably
- 50:32my brother? Al okay, can't. If you can't swing bail, there's
- 50:37no way, all right. Final one, name the one piece of clothing
- 50:40or apparel that you just can't part with? Other than Captain American T shirts
- 50:45and denim jackets. What's the one that you one? Maybe that you've held
- 50:47on to forever. Maybe it doesn't even fit any more, specially since you're
- 50:51weight loss. You just can't get rid of it, no matter what.
- 50:52My belt buckles collect. I'm a belt buckle collector and I actually have I
- 50:59look for belt buckle like a rodeo guy. But well some of them not
- 51:02quite. This one's this one right here? Radio Bill? You know that,
- 51:06right? I know, I know. I'm always thinking, No,
- 51:07I collect belt buck was I have a lot of brass heavy belt buckles.
- 51:10Are just curious, all right? I like them. You have completed ten
- 51:15questions. You know, here's a moist talent. Good to go? All
- 51:19right? So I mentioned earlier about your interviews you've done and I've got to
- 51:22wrap it up with this to people that rolled through the Try State. And
- 51:23I was, you know, kind of baiting you a little bit there.
- 51:27But who was one of the ones that you really enjoyed talking to? Because
- 51:29you're you're the interview guy. When these musicians come through, they always talk
- 51:31to you, and it's in the paper. There was one that you really
- 51:35enjoyed or maybe as we determined wrestling, as we marked out over, who
- 51:37did you mark out over? Okay? Well, actually two. One was
- 51:40George Carlin. He gave me thirty minutes and the ex he canceled his show
- 51:44because he was sick. But I got I got thirty minutes, which is
- 51:46a thirty minutes more than Charleston got, and we talked about all everything.
- 51:50It's comedy, politics, It was beautiful. I would have just been like
- 51:54a kid, and I mean just it's like holding my breath the ENTI okay,
- 51:58So George Carlin was one. Mark Cambell Luke Skywalker, I'm a big
- 52:00Star Wars not the last of the prequel trilogies. I managed to convince him
- 52:06to talk to me about Star Wars and he told me great stories. I
- 52:08loved it, all right. I can't imagine talking to George Carlin. I
- 52:10mean I've met some of a few of They say, don't meet your heroes.
- 52:14I've met a few of them and they were all really cool. But
- 52:16if I'm met Carlin, I mean, I just I'd be like I am.
- 52:21It's been fun, Bills and maybe you could do a feature on the
- 52:23show. Sure they've been right, all right, you get that. A
- 52:28lot dolts to bills, So you should write about me, write about people
- 52:30more interesting than myself. All right, we gotta go. Coming up on
- 52:34the show Monday, we get back to it. It's Mayor Monday. Barbara's
