- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Jim Hayes along with the delightful Lance Lynn the other
- 0:15Speaker 1: two guys. We change start times and everything. Lance, you're
- 0:19Speaker 1: always here and I appreciate that about you.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, well, they seem to always be busy right around
- 0:25Speaker 2: this time. It doesn't matter when we start. They're always
- 0:27Speaker 2: running the light. I will say, the later we start,
- 0:30Speaker 2: the worst it is for me. So we're in a
- 0:32Speaker 2: good spot today.
- 0:33Speaker 1: All right, you want to get to it all right?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Before we start, I do have a request. Look, if
- 0:38Speaker 1: you enjoy Cardinal Territory, go ahead and reach out and
- 0:43Speaker 1: punch that subscriber button. See, here's the deal. They told
- 0:46Speaker 1: us we want to get past five we blewe past that.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Now we're over six. So people have been helping out
- 0:52Speaker 1: with this. Now they want us to get to seven
- 0:54Speaker 1: thousand subscribers. So it's right there in front of you.
- 0:57Speaker 1: If you like Cardinal Territory, do us a favor. Hit
- 1:00Speaker 1: that subscribe button. Now. The cards did make a move
- 1:04Speaker 1: this week. Lance wasn't a big move, but it was
- 1:09Speaker 1: a move. They claimed off waivers a guy by the
- 1:15Speaker 1: name of Brian Ramos. Now, for the record, I'm Bloomson
- 1:21Speaker 1: on km OX the other day that they're still in
- 1:23Speaker 1: pursuit of a right handed bag but Rainbows. They claimed
- 1:28Speaker 1: him off right waivers from the Orioles put him on
- 1:30Speaker 1: the forty. Man played in thirty six games with the
- 1:34Speaker 1: White Sox over the last two seasons. Made his big
- 1:37Speaker 1: league debut back in twenty twenty four at Bush Stadium.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And he's a guy who plays some infield, plays some outfield,
- 1:48Speaker 1: right handed bat, and showed some pop at triple A.
- 1:52Speaker 1: So Lancewhill, this isn't the move I think Cardinal fans
- 1:56Speaker 1: were hoping for. It seems like a no break. You
- 1:59Speaker 1: get a guy who has some potential, still young, twenty
- 2:03Speaker 1: three years old, guy out of Cuba, who doesn't cost
- 2:07Speaker 1: you anything and maybe something, so it seems like kind
- 2:11Speaker 1: of a no risk move.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it fits all of the the holes in their roster.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I guess that you would would would add like place third,
- 2:20Speaker 2: can play the outfield, H's right handed. So that's everything
- 2:24Speaker 2: that you know they've been looking for. And you do
- 2:26Speaker 2: it with you know, big league minimum. You know, obviously
- 2:29Speaker 2: you got to see if he can do it at
- 2:31Speaker 2: the big league level. He hasn't really gotten a whole
- 2:33Speaker 2: lot of at bats or anything like that. But the
- 2:35Speaker 2: power numbers have been there in the minor leagues. The
- 2:37Speaker 2: whole group kind of he kind of fits into the
- 2:39Speaker 2: whole group, right. We need to see what Gorman does.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Walker does. All these guys that are going to be
- 2:45Speaker 2: in the same boat with him have good numbers in
- 2:48Speaker 2: the minor leagues. It's time to establish yourself as a
- 2:50Speaker 2: major leaguer and he's going to have. You know, maybe
- 2:53Speaker 2: this will give him some right handed at bats regularly
- 2:57Speaker 2: if he makes the club. But it's a depth piece too.
- 3:00Speaker 2: At the same time, when when guys get get hurt
- 3:03Speaker 2: or whatever throughout the year. He's a guy to can
- 3:05Speaker 2: play multiple positions, and if he turned some of that
- 3:08Speaker 2: minor league power into major league power, then you got
- 3:10Speaker 2: to steal.
- 3:12Speaker 1: If this is the move that they're making again. Him
- 3:15Speaker 1: said the other day on came OAX that if still
- 3:20Speaker 1: is a right handed bet that pursue wing, they just
- 3:23Speaker 1: haven't lined it up yet. If they don't do that.
- 3:26Speaker 1: As a Cardinal fan, how disappointed would you be?
- 3:30Speaker 2: I mean, the whatever bat that you're going to get
- 3:33Speaker 2: isn't going to make you a playoff team, So I
- 3:35Speaker 2: don't know. You know, the it hasn't lined up yet
- 3:38Speaker 2: because they don't want to pay anybody anything because they
- 3:41Speaker 2: they're trying to get a veteran. They can do some
- 3:44Speaker 2: at bats, but they can have trade value at the deadline,
- 3:46Speaker 2: so that you're you know where you're at right now,
- 3:49Speaker 2: is you grer grit Chick's somebody like that. I don't
- 3:51Speaker 2: think anybody's going to be overwhelmed with whoever they get anyways,
- 3:56Speaker 2: because it's not going to be a fifteen million or
- 4:00Speaker 2: ten to fifteen million dollar guy that's a you know,
- 4:03Speaker 2: a lineup changing or altering, season altering signing. He's a
- 4:10Speaker 2: guy that's gonna come in. He's gonna platton, he's going
- 4:12Speaker 2: to hit right handed. He's gonna you know, give days
- 4:15Speaker 2: off for you know, certain a couple of these lefties
- 4:18Speaker 2: here and there, and then if he has a good
- 4:21Speaker 2: first half, he's gonna get traded at the deadline. So
- 4:23Speaker 2: I don't know if anything really is going to pop
- 4:26Speaker 2: off to make the Cardinals fans excited about what the
- 4:30Speaker 2: season is gonna bring. He's just there to help young
- 4:32Speaker 2: guys until he gets traded.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Whoever. This may be all right, Having said and what
- 4:37Speaker 1: you said, I think is fair and reasonable. But as
- 4:41Speaker 1: a Cardinal fan, which I am, I still want the
- 4:45Speaker 1: Cardinals to field the best team they possibly can and
- 4:49Speaker 1: then see how everything unfolds. Like granted it's a rebuild.
- 4:53Speaker 1: No one's saying World Series, But am I wrong for
- 4:57Speaker 1: saying no? I want them to get the best a
- 5:00Speaker 1: small because the more games they win, the more fun
- 5:04Speaker 1: it'll be to watch a developing young team. Yeah.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I mean, if you develop winning, that's always huge for
- 5:10Speaker 2: what you got going on. The group that's there needs
- 5:13Speaker 2: to play. So you don't want to sign someone that's
- 5:15Speaker 2: going to take or block at bats for certain people
- 5:19Speaker 2: and a person that is any good and they want
- 5:23Speaker 2: to play for a winning team and they want guaranteed
- 5:25Speaker 2: at bats, so it's going to be a problem or
- 5:27Speaker 2: hard to find. This bat probably won't be signed until
- 5:33Speaker 2: the end of February, maybe the first of March, when
- 5:35Speaker 2: he has nowhere else to go. That's what you're waiting on,
- 5:38Speaker 2: And it's going to be in the price point where
- 5:40Speaker 2: they're okay with it, where it's not cost him.
- 5:42Speaker 1: A bunch of money.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I mean, Azuna just signed for one for thirteen with
- 5:45Speaker 2: the Pirates or twelve with Pirates, like that's in a bat,
- 5:49Speaker 2: that's a lineup changing bat. But the Cardinals are not
- 5:53Speaker 2: going to be in that ballpark, but the Pirates are.
- 5:56Speaker 2: So it's an interesting little offseason.
- 6:00Speaker 1: It really is. Let me ask you this too, Like
- 6:02Speaker 1: Ozona is a guy who can help a lot of
- 6:05Speaker 1: teams with his bad right, and you've been in this
- 6:09Speaker 1: situation for the guys that are still on the board
- 6:12Speaker 1: looking for their next job, even if it's one year.
- 6:17Speaker 1: How much does it hurt the Cardinals that it is
- 6:19Speaker 1: a rebuild guys that maybe they could be in on
- 6:22Speaker 1: even if they weren't looking to spend a ton of
- 6:24Speaker 1: money in years past, as opposed to this year, where
- 6:28Speaker 1: for all intents and purposes, this is a rebuild year
- 6:32Speaker 1: and maybe some veterans are looking for a team with
- 6:34Speaker 1: a better shot.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that's where if you where the money
- 6:39Speaker 2: is going to line up, right, you get to a
- 6:41Speaker 2: point where you are in this offseason, or if you
- 6:43Speaker 2: want me to go to a rebuild, or you want
- 6:45Speaker 2: me to be a veteran leadership guy, you're going to
- 6:47Speaker 2: have to, you know, make it worth my while and
- 6:50Speaker 2: give me a chance to put numbers up so I
- 6:51Speaker 2: can get traded and have some value next year. The
- 6:54Speaker 2: problem that the Cardinals have right now is the person
- 6:56Speaker 2: that they're looking for.
- 6:57Speaker 1: They don't.
- 6:58Speaker 2: It's not the guys are the for every day at
- 7:00Speaker 2: bats and this and that, where they can get opportunities
- 7:03Speaker 2: to up their value not only for next year, but
- 7:06Speaker 2: also at the trade deadline. So it's a weird little fit.
- 7:10Speaker 2: You're getting to the point of the off season two
- 7:12Speaker 2: where there's guys that are you know, you can maybe
- 7:15Speaker 2: get for a two year deal, and you're thinking, and
- 7:18Speaker 2: everybody like, well would why would the Cardinals do that?
- 7:21Speaker 2: But if you look at the roster, these are the
- 7:24Speaker 2: still still the same spots that are going to be
- 7:27Speaker 2: a problem next offseason. So maybe you get a guy
- 7:30Speaker 2: on a two year deal with a v a little
- 7:33Speaker 2: less where he's a guy that can be here for
- 7:36Speaker 2: multiple years and do the things you need to do,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and you can kind of help the mold your roster
- 7:42Speaker 2: the way you want to and say, hey, here's what
- 7:44Speaker 2: I want to look like next year too, and this
- 7:46Speaker 2: guy can help me in both ways, and he's a
- 7:48Speaker 2: veteran in this and that, and I give him a
- 7:50Speaker 2: two year deal because there's no money on the books,
- 7:53Speaker 2: no guaranteed money on the books after this year for anybody. Technically,
- 7:57Speaker 2: everybody's are only money guaranteed right now is the money
- 8:00Speaker 2: they got to pay for all the guys they traded.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So you can really kind of look ahead and be like, oh,
- 8:05Speaker 2: this could be a really good piece to be a
- 8:07Speaker 2: part of what we're going to do here the next
- 8:08Speaker 2: three to four years. So it be interesting if they
- 8:11Speaker 2: find any of those guys that have kind of come
- 8:13Speaker 2: down on their asking price or something like that, that
- 8:16Speaker 2: it might still be on the board. That could be
- 8:17Speaker 2: a fun little thing for him to look into. If
- 8:20Speaker 2: that's if that's possible.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Maybe well, because trades still a possibility, And that brings
- 8:26Speaker 1: me back to some we've talked about. One of the
- 8:29Speaker 1: guys that you would figure would be a good trade
- 8:34Speaker 1: bake piece would be Jojo. And you know, time keeps
- 8:39Speaker 1: getting getting closer and closer to the regular season, So
- 8:43Speaker 1: I'm going to circle back. Do you think Jojo is
- 8:47Speaker 1: a cardinal by the time the cards depart Florida?
- 8:54Speaker 2: I mean, if you're doing this whole thing, I would
- 8:56Speaker 2: say you should trade him because of how relievers can go.
- 9:00Speaker 2: You know, they can go one year great, one year bad,
- 9:03Speaker 2: and it's just a you know, if you look at
- 9:05Speaker 2: it that way, you're running a risk. If you're going
- 9:07Speaker 2: to trade him at the deadline, or that's the thought,
- 9:09Speaker 2: or he's going to be a free agent, then you
- 9:11Speaker 2: get no value for him if he has a bad
- 9:13Speaker 2: little stretch. But when the market is all right, there's
- 9:17Speaker 2: probably some still relievers out there that are are you
- 9:20Speaker 2: got to sign and you know you're gonna be kind
- 9:22Speaker 2: of waiting for a team that didn't get what they want,
- 9:24Speaker 2: and or you're in spring training and a guy on
- 9:27Speaker 2: a team that's going to be a contender he gets
- 9:29Speaker 2: hurt and then it's okay, hey, that's might he might
- 9:32Speaker 2: be when you strike. So if you're fully like on
- 9:38Speaker 2: board with the rebuild, you trade Jojo for the best
- 9:42Speaker 2: piece you can get before he the possibility of him
- 9:45Speaker 2: having a downstretch and not being having the value at
- 9:48Speaker 2: the trade deadline. That being said, you talk about Lars right,
- 9:52Speaker 2: they're talking about him. The injury is the only reason
- 9:54Speaker 2: he hasn't been traded. He's going to go show everybody's healthy.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So his value is probably lower than it is than
- 10:00Speaker 2: it's going to be at the trade deadline because you've
- 10:02Speaker 2: got to go show that your you know your feet
- 10:03Speaker 2: are good and you're able to play. And then once
- 10:05Speaker 2: he's able to do that, I think he could get
- 10:07Speaker 2: traded in a spot where it might even be up
- 10:09Speaker 2: to the deadline. He could be gone before when the
- 10:12Speaker 2: team wants to make a move and they know they
- 10:13Speaker 2: need that left handed bat anyway, So he could be
- 10:15Speaker 2: gone before you know, you even get to the deadline
- 10:18Speaker 2: as it approaches.
- 10:19Speaker 1: One other question before we move on about the Cardinals'
- 10:23Speaker 1: trade potential. They have three catchers in their top ten prospects,
- 10:30Speaker 1: three which is unheard of. Not to mention, you got
- 10:34Speaker 1: three guys on your major league roster who have shown
- 10:38Speaker 1: pretty well what they can do. I'm just curious. I
- 10:43Speaker 1: mean a lot depends on whether or not, or whatever
- 10:45Speaker 1: it can actually be the catcher he thinks he can. Mike,
- 10:48Speaker 1: My question is you have Joejoe, you have other pieces.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Wouldn't you think you take one of these catching prospects
- 10:56Speaker 1: where they have three of them, you'd be able to
- 10:58Speaker 1: package that up and get something fairly nice in return.
- 11:02Speaker 2: You think so, But you always need good catching, and
- 11:04Speaker 2: especially if you have it as a as a surplus.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Herrera's got you gotta wait and see if he can catch,
- 11:11Speaker 2: and Pedro is such a great catch and throw guy.
- 11:14Speaker 2: The question is, you know, can he can? They? Then
- 11:17Speaker 2: can the bat do enough to be an everyday catcher?
- 11:20Speaker 2: I think that question. I think he can, but I
- 11:22Speaker 2: think some teams might see him as a as a
- 11:25Speaker 2: backup or a platoon catcher type thing. So when you're
- 11:28Speaker 2: looking at that and the other guys are kind of young,
- 11:30Speaker 2: uh so you got to kind of wait and see
- 11:32Speaker 2: what everybody's gonna do. And then when it comes time
- 11:36Speaker 2: to hey, we're gonna be competing. I think that's when
- 11:39Speaker 2: you package him right when you know you're going for it.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That's when you go get what you want, or you
- 11:43Speaker 2: go get that final piece and you're okay with giving
- 11:46Speaker 2: up a you know, a couple couple of good prospects
- 11:50Speaker 2: because you know this is the piece right now, you
- 11:51Speaker 2: don't know what the pieces are you gotta. You're kind
- 11:54Speaker 2: of waiting to see how they all fit together now
- 11:56Speaker 2: on your major league roster. So let them all kind
- 11:59Speaker 2: of play him grow another year, see what pieces you need,
- 12:03Speaker 2: see how you do, how you develop, and then go
- 12:06Speaker 2: from there when it's like, hey, I need this a
- 12:09Speaker 2: starting pitcher or I need this bat and I can
- 12:11Speaker 2: trade these guys, and I'm okay with it because I
- 12:14Speaker 2: know I'm getting the piece. It's gonna make me a
- 12:16Speaker 2: playoff contender or World Series contender. Then it's okay to
- 12:19Speaker 2: trade your your you know, your top somebody in your
- 12:21Speaker 2: top five prospects.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And for the record, I'm a harrier guy. When he
- 12:27Speaker 1: says he believes he can catch, I put stock in
- 12:30Speaker 1: it because he totally renovated his swing when he was
- 12:33Speaker 1: in the minors, worked his butt off, got the surgery
- 12:36Speaker 1: on the elbow to remove those pieces or whatever that
- 12:39Speaker 1: was stopping him from throwing. He said he was embarrassed
- 12:42Speaker 1: by the way he was throwing. So you know, when
- 12:44Speaker 1: he puts his mind to something, he usually gets it
- 12:46Speaker 1: done quick word.
- 12:49Speaker 2: We got to see how the ball comes out. We
- 12:51Speaker 2: got to catch It's not gonna be the problem.
- 12:52Speaker 1: He can catch it.
- 12:53Speaker 2: The question is going to throw it the second one
- 12:54Speaker 2: guy steals on, which is being kind of the thing
- 12:57Speaker 2: the last two years, which hopefully the bone spurt's gonna
- 13:00Speaker 2: help him actually feel like he can throw a normal
- 13:02Speaker 2: let it go.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So he told me, he said with the elbow thing,
- 13:06Speaker 1: he couldn't get the elbow in the right spot, and
- 13:08Speaker 1: he went to to a drive line and worked on
- 13:12Speaker 1: all that whatever they call that place. And he said
- 13:15Speaker 1: is because of the elbow stuff, he couldn't get his
- 13:18Speaker 1: throwing arm in the in the right position, and that
- 13:20Speaker 1: he thinks he'll do better. So time will tell. If

- 14:55Speaker 1: I want to save money on my mobile to rip
- 14:58Speaker 1: off most of those companies. Lance. We're at a point
- 15:01Speaker 1: now where pictures and catchers report this week, So I
- 15:07Speaker 1: want to take you back to the early years in
- 15:10Speaker 1: your career. Where are you in terms of being ready
- 15:15Speaker 1: and what's some the mental state of mind at this
- 15:20Speaker 1: point for young pictures getting ready to report to camp.
- 15:25Speaker 2: At this point, you're you're you're pretty jacked, You're ready
- 15:27Speaker 2: to get into warm weather. You're ready to go down
- 15:29Speaker 2: there and start facing hitters. You know, I'd always be
- 15:33Speaker 2: my mind that I went into camp every year, uh,
- 15:36Speaker 2: with the the idea that I could get you three
- 15:39Speaker 2: outs when I showed up. So I was always trying
- 15:42Speaker 2: to be where I, you know, can be game ready,
- 15:44Speaker 2: I guess, for one, any type thing, and then you
- 15:46Speaker 2: can jump right into live VPS and and then go
- 15:48Speaker 2: from there where you're where you're built up enough because
- 15:52Speaker 2: you're going to have your your times when things you
- 15:55Speaker 2: know are going to be a little sore. So you
- 15:57Speaker 2: try to do as much as you can pretty much
- 15:59Speaker 2: from January twentieth on to like really do some updowns,
- 16:04Speaker 2: try to get different intensities so when you actually face hitters,
- 16:09Speaker 2: that intensity doesn't ramp up so much to where you
- 16:11Speaker 2: hurt yourself. So you kind of slowly get yourself sore.
- 16:15Speaker 2: You can get through it. Each intensity, multiple innings of IBP,
- 16:19Speaker 2: multiple innians and games give you a little bit more soretness,
- 16:21Speaker 2: So you're just slowly trying to build it up so
- 16:24Speaker 2: the jumps don't hurt you. They just developed some soreness.
- 16:27Speaker 2: It's like a callous and you callous it up and
- 16:29Speaker 2: you get ready for your next outing.
- 16:32Speaker 1: Now, there was a year where you shocked a lot
- 16:35Speaker 1: of people at spring training, probably run twenty thirteen where
- 16:40Speaker 1: Lance Lend has always been a little big boned, big
- 16:43Speaker 1: guy probably helps you as a picture. And I know
- 16:46Speaker 1: the Cardinals have been like, you gotta lose weight, you
- 16:48Speaker 1: gotta lose weight. So you you showed up one spring
- 16:52Speaker 1: as skinny Lance, So tell me how you lost the
- 16:55Speaker 1: weight and tell me the pressure that they put on
- 17:00Speaker 1: you to do that, and maybe the results, which, as
- 17:03Speaker 1: I recalled, weren't.
- 17:04Speaker 2: Break Yeah, it worked out. It ended up working out
- 17:07Speaker 2: for me. Twenty twelve is my first full year in
- 17:10Speaker 2: the big leagues, right, I made think of made like
- 17:12Speaker 2: twenty nine starts that year through the most innings I've
- 17:15Speaker 2: ever had in a season and all that, and they
- 17:17Speaker 2: were like, oh, the reason why you're tired or this
- 17:20Speaker 2: or that is because you're bigger. And I was like, well,
- 17:23Speaker 2: it could be the fact that the year before I
- 17:26Speaker 2: did Nott throw one hundred and sixty one hundred and
- 17:28Speaker 2: seventy inings. I only through like eighty five, so maybe
- 17:30Speaker 2: it was a big jumping innings. But no, everyone want
- 17:33Speaker 2: to blame the body. They didn't want to blame the
- 17:35Speaker 2: fact that I had a full season of major league
- 17:37Speaker 2: work for the first time in my life. So that
- 17:41Speaker 2: was the start of it, and they're like, oh, you
- 17:43Speaker 2: need to lose weight so you can be better throughout
- 17:45Speaker 2: a whole year. So I lost weight pretty much. You
- 17:48Speaker 2: just don't eat all off season. You just work out,
- 17:52Speaker 2: do all that stuff, and eat a lot of salads
- 17:54Speaker 2: and a lot of stuff that doesn't taste good. So
- 17:57Speaker 2: I did all that for a full off season. I
- 17:58Speaker 2: lost like forty pounds forty five pounds in the off season,
- 18:02Speaker 2: got the spring training and was throwing eighty eight and
- 18:05Speaker 2: they were like, hey, how you feel I go. I
- 18:07Speaker 2: feel great, I go, but I feel like I like,
- 18:10Speaker 2: I just got nothing on the ball. And then after
- 18:13Speaker 2: like two weeks of spring training and they were like, hey,
- 18:16Speaker 2: we think you should put some weight back on it.
- 18:18Speaker 2: And I was like, oh no shit. You know we
- 18:20Speaker 2: didn't see this coming, but you know, you had to
- 18:23Speaker 2: do what you're asked when when your stuff's not guaranteed.
- 18:27Speaker 2: The year before, I won eighteen games, made an All
- 18:29Speaker 2: Star team, but I was too fat. Came to spring
- 18:33Speaker 2: training the next year, couldn't break ninety miles an hour,
- 18:36Speaker 2: but I was too skinny. So then they were like,
- 18:39Speaker 2: oh here, So then I went that night, I got
- 18:41Speaker 2: a six pack and a large pizza put on fifteen
- 18:44Speaker 2: pounds by the end of spring training, and I was,
- 18:46Speaker 2: you know, back in the ballpark I needed to be
- 18:48Speaker 2: and to get through the season.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Who apologized to you for having you lose that weight today? No?
- 18:56Speaker 2: I remember MO one time was like, hey, well at
- 19:00Speaker 2: least we know that we don't have to tell you
- 19:01Speaker 2: lose weight anymore. And I was like, yeah, I can
- 19:03Speaker 2: go tell you to f yourself from here on out.
- 19:05Speaker 2: And he's like, that is correct. He goes, you just
- 19:07Speaker 2: go do you? And I go, okay, I appreciate it.
- 19:11Speaker 1: There's a lot of things.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Who's actually was it to lose weight? Could have been
- 19:15Speaker 2: most could have been Mike's you know who knows, but
- 19:19Speaker 2: you know, it end up, you know, ended up working out.
- 19:22Speaker 2: From then on. I could be like, hey, you know,
- 19:24Speaker 2: I'm good. Don't worry about me.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Because if you tell me to do things that I
- 19:29Speaker 1: don't want to do, they usually don't work out.
- 19:32Speaker 2: I did what they asked and it worked out real
- 19:35Speaker 2: well for me because I could tell them to you know,
- 19:38Speaker 2: stick it. I'm good.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Now. There's a lot of things about pitching, I mean,
- 19:43Speaker 1: little things about the mechanics that I don't care how
- 19:46Speaker 1: many games you watch. I don't care how many times
- 19:49Speaker 1: you've covered a game. I don't care how many times
- 19:52Speaker 1: you've been at second base as a major league play.
- 19:56Speaker 1: There are certain things about mechanics of pitching, and I'm
- 19:59Speaker 1: just curious for you pitching at a certain weight or
- 20:02Speaker 1: maybe sometimes a little above it, though there's mechanical things
- 20:06Speaker 1: behind that that make it work. Help me understand that.
- 20:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I think everybody's body moves differently. For me, I
- 20:13Speaker 2: use my body and my weight the way to get
- 20:15Speaker 2: down the mound, the way to hide the ball, the
- 20:17Speaker 2: way to do all those things. And it just, you know,
- 20:20Speaker 2: I've been doing that my whole life, and it kind of,
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know, just it just worked. When you lose the weight,
- 20:26Speaker 2: you know, things could get you get more flexibility, You
- 20:28Speaker 2: get this and that that might be bad, might get
- 20:31Speaker 2: you out of sync, It might cause stress on certain areas,
- 20:35Speaker 2: or it might you know, you might just not have
- 20:37Speaker 2: the power that you once had. So and then there's
- 20:41Speaker 2: guys that you know, you can get too big where
- 20:43Speaker 2: you get next thing. You know, your your knees and
- 20:46Speaker 2: your back and you just can't quite get the ball
- 20:49Speaker 2: where you need to do because you can't get over
- 20:51Speaker 2: your you know, your front leg or something like that.
- 20:53Speaker 2: So I think everybody nowadays has got so many different
- 20:56Speaker 2: doctors and different you know, trainers and stuff. They work
- 20:59Speaker 2: with them get their body moving the way that it moves.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Back then, that wasn't really a thing. They had their
- 21:06Speaker 2: idea what they wanted you to look like and how
- 21:07Speaker 2: it's supposed to look. Now it's like, hey, his body
- 21:10Speaker 2: moves great with this size or this and that nothing's
- 21:15Speaker 2: blocking his movement patterns, and so they're able to do
- 21:18Speaker 2: the things they need to do, you know, mechanically to
- 21:22Speaker 2: get where they need to be. So you know, you
- 21:24Speaker 2: don't need to lose weight. There's you know, there's all
- 21:27Speaker 2: this science to prove that you're you're using your body
- 21:30Speaker 2: the way it is. And then sometimes it's like, hey,
- 21:32Speaker 2: I can't physically get to there. Why can't I get there?
- 21:34Speaker 2: What's because you're you know, your lacks of lack of
- 21:37Speaker 2: flexibility here, which is maybe you need to lose a
- 21:40Speaker 2: little weight so you can get more flexibility. And then
- 21:42Speaker 2: that's a different story. There's a scientific reason for losing
- 21:45Speaker 2: that weight or changing your something in your diet or
- 21:48Speaker 2: your workouts to get to where you need to go.
- 21:50Speaker 2: So you can physically mechanically move your body the way
- 21:53Speaker 2: it's supposed to do. So the game's changed a lot.
- 21:56Speaker 2: You have a lot more stuff that you can use
- 21:58Speaker 2: those things. Where back in the day it was like, oh,
- 22:00Speaker 2: you look tired at the end of the year, won't
- 22:01Speaker 2: you won't you lose some weight? Well, it's like, well,
- 22:04Speaker 2: I've never thrown one hundred and eighty Indians in a
- 22:05Speaker 2: season in my life, so maybe that's why I was tired.
- 22:08Speaker 2: But no one, no one ever wanted to no one
- 22:10Speaker 2: ever wanted to admit to them. Maybe that's the reason I'm.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Gonna apologize since no one else. Well here's the thing.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Look at Libby last year. That's the same thing. But
- 22:21Speaker 2: nobody telling Libby lose weight.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Put it on.
- 22:26Speaker 2: You can get through it, through it, right. It's like, okay,
- 22:28Speaker 2: well we put some weight on. He might he might
- 22:30Speaker 2: his knee might go out or something like that. It's
- 22:32Speaker 2: just like, hey, why don't you let the guy build up.
- 22:35Speaker 2: He's never done it before. It's like, hey, well we
- 22:37Speaker 2: got to hear it. Now, we can add on. Now,
- 22:39Speaker 2: we can add on. But you know, go spot three
- 22:41Speaker 2: fifteen after you haven't squatted in a year. I promise you.
- 22:44Speaker 2: It's not going to feel good and you're not going
- 22:46Speaker 2: to get through it, but if you build yourself into it,
- 22:49Speaker 2: you might be able to get there.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I like it all right. Last thing, then I'm going
- 22:53Speaker 1: to let you go. When when a player at spring
- 22:56Speaker 1: training say they're a young guy and they hit three ten,
- 22:59Speaker 1: everyone like, this guy gets it. He's making the roster.
- 23:02Speaker 1: When a veteran doesn't perform well, especially pictures right, he's
- 23:07Speaker 1: working on some things right, some will say he's lost it.
- 23:11Speaker 1: To me, spring training is fool's goal. Like you can't
- 23:14Speaker 1: really judge what's going on because you don't know the
- 23:16Speaker 1: mindset of a player in that particular game. So when
- 23:20Speaker 1: you were at spring training, tell me what you were
- 23:23Speaker 1: going through and what the the results, whether or not
- 23:26Speaker 1: they mattered to you.
- 23:28Speaker 2: I think every game you had a different mindset of
- 23:31Speaker 2: what you wanted to get done, especially the older I got.
- 23:33Speaker 2: It was like, hey, I want to establish this pitch today,
- 23:35Speaker 2: or I hate the way this pitch feels, so I'm
- 23:38Speaker 2: going to throw it more today than I would ever
- 23:40Speaker 2: throw it in a game. You know, And it doesn't
- 23:44Speaker 2: matter what hitters in the box right he's or lefties.
- 23:46Speaker 2: I'm throwing it. I'm going to throw this pitch so
- 23:49Speaker 2: you get yourselves in like, oh, you give up a
- 23:51Speaker 2: bunch of hits today on this pitch. Well yeah, he
- 23:53Speaker 2: just kept throwing it because it's like, you got to
- 23:55Speaker 2: get that feel for a pitch. But when you're young,
- 23:58Speaker 2: when I first came in, it was, ok, I need
- 24:00Speaker 2: to make sure my four team is ready to go,
- 24:03Speaker 2: and I'm trying to get everybody out no matter what.
- 24:05Speaker 2: So I'm sticking to my bread and butter and you
- 24:07Speaker 2: don't really get to develop because of that at times.
- 24:10Speaker 2: But the older you get, it's like, okay, cool, my
- 24:12Speaker 2: sinker's stump so far the spring training, I am throwing
- 24:16Speaker 2: it as much as I can today, And then you
- 24:19Speaker 2: just sit there and you're like, okay, cool, I give
- 24:21Speaker 2: up six ground ball hits on my sinker. But I
- 24:23Speaker 2: finally got it so where I could. I was hit
- 24:26Speaker 2: my spot with it. Finally got there. But you know, hey,
- 24:29Speaker 2: the results weren't there, but hey, I got what I
- 24:31Speaker 2: needed out of it today. But I'm not going to
- 24:33Speaker 2: sit there and throw eighty two percent sinkers because that's
- 24:36Speaker 2: my fourth best pitch. I got what I needed to
- 24:39Speaker 2: get in. I got the feel for certain things, and
- 24:42Speaker 2: sometimes when when you get older, you're like, man, if
- 24:44Speaker 2: I just give up a bunch of runs in spring training,
- 24:46Speaker 2: maybe I won't give them up during the season. So
- 24:49Speaker 2: give up all your runs and hits in spring training
- 24:51Speaker 2: and then you know, turn the page in April when
- 24:53Speaker 2: the lights turn on and you can actually, you know,
- 24:56Speaker 2: go through a game plan with a catcher. There was
- 24:58Speaker 2: times in spring training where I didn't even know who
- 25:01Speaker 2: was catching me that day until we walked into the ballpark,
- 25:04Speaker 2: and then I was like, Hey, cool, don't we don't
- 25:07Speaker 2: have a game plan and this and that. Here's what
- 25:09Speaker 2: I'm working on today. And you got to shake thirty
- 25:11Speaker 2: times to get to you know, what you need to
- 25:13Speaker 2: You don't even know the kid, especially if you've got
- 25:16Speaker 2: a young catcher that you've never seen before. So there's
- 25:19Speaker 2: so many different things. But when you're young, you come
- 25:22Speaker 2: in there and rip your best two pitches. You could
- 25:24Speaker 2: have a great spring training. And if you're a young hitter,
- 25:27Speaker 2: you can go in there and no one's ever seen
- 25:28Speaker 2: you know what you got, and you can get a
- 25:31Speaker 2: big league You're working on a sinker and that just
- 25:33Speaker 2: finds your barrel and you go two for three. That day,
- 25:35Speaker 2: and you're like, oh, he's ready for the big league.
- 25:36Speaker 2: He's like, no, I will never throw that kid that
- 25:38Speaker 2: pitch in a regular game. It's my worst pitch and
- 25:41Speaker 2: it's the only thing that finds his barrel. So there's
- 25:43Speaker 2: so many things that don't matter in spring training numbers wise,
- 25:47Speaker 2: that I definitely get overhypped.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Lance. I enjoyed today's program. A couple of things I
- 25:53Speaker 1: take away spring training is fools gold. And also, I
- 25:57Speaker 1: should feel no guilt when I go downstairs after this
- 26:00Speaker 1: and finish those wings that I didn't crush there on
- 26:03Speaker 1: the super Bowl. Because this is my playing wing.
- 26:06Speaker 2: You bone in her or bonus.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Bones, because that's the way a chicken wing.
- 26:12Speaker 2: Is meant to be eaten. Yes, that's the way it
- 26:14Speaker 2: was meant to be eaten.
- 26:15Speaker 1: And blue cheese or brains, please say blue cheese.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I so I'm good with both. I like, I like
- 26:23Speaker 2: both of them, and I actually go back and forth.
- 26:25Speaker 2: They're like, hey, what do you want blue cheese a ranch?
- 26:26Speaker 2: I was like, I'll take both, thank you. One wing
- 26:29Speaker 2: gets one and the next wing gets the next. I
- 26:31Speaker 2: just keep myself guessing.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Beautiful, Lance, Thanks as always. That's going to do it
- 26:38Speaker 1: for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see you next
- 26:41Speaker 1: time for the next episode. Hopefully that one won't suck.
