- 0:00We spend all our energy hunting for what's wrong with our bodies.
- 0:03Today, I want to show you the signs that things are actually going right for you.
- 0:09The high achievers problem list, the guy that's always out here, Mr. Fix-It.
- 0:15They get their blood work done.
- 0:17Maybe you have a bad knee.
- 0:19Maybe you have a little bit of a beer belly.
- 0:20Maybe it's a muffin top.
- 0:23All you notice is those negative things.
- 0:25This is me, guys.
- 0:26This is me to a T. You don't notice the good things.
- 0:29Never count the wins, or at least you don't take long enough to enjoy those wins.
- 0:33Yeah, I know you're feeling me.
- 0:35There are four signs you can test at home in two minutes, and I'm going to...
- 0:41Some sound stupid, like putting your socks on, standing up.
- 0:45And the last one...
- 0:47involves getting off the floor and it's the one that research cares about most.
- 0:51I'm going to save that one till the end, but stay with me because I checked these on myself.
- 0:56I'm 50 coming up on 51 in another month.
- 1:00And I'll tell you which one I lost in my forties and had to earn back
- 1:05Again, this is my experience.
- 1:08I'm not a doctor.
- 1:09This isn't medical advice, but everything I do, every mistake I've made, every error, every faux pas, every thing I've done wrong, I bring the heart of the life nation and hopefully wise people learn from my mistakes.
- 1:23By the end, you'll have a score of one out of four, a number to beat next month, and a reason to stop beating yourself up about the wrong things.
- 1:33Just a reminder, I'm Kelly Siegel, and this is our solo Thursday, Harder Than Life, Just You and Me, reminding you the show is growing fast.
- 1:42So please, before we start, I want you to share this.
- 1:47Hit follow on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, or now Amazon is streaming these.
- 1:53So if you want to retest this next month, please share it because everybody's gonna be talking about it, man.
- 1:59So.
- 1:59I'm going to start off with a story.
- 2:01And it's a personal one because I get it all the time.
- 2:04People DM me.
- 2:06People are commenting in social media that I only look the way I do because I'm on steroids.
- 2:11I've said this many times.
- 2:12I'm not, but
- 2:13I take peptides, test.TRT.
- 2:16I have enhancements.
- 2:17I'm not trying to say I'm not.
- 2:20But keep in mind, inbox is full of people.
- 2:24I call these undercover fans because what's missing in them, they see in me and it just gets upset.
- 2:28So I really do wish that I could just take a bunch of steroids and look like this.
- 2:34A mentor once told me something I've forgotten.
- 2:36Where we are right now was once the goal years ago.
- 2:43So the point isn't about, I'm not talking about the haters and people that I don't care about that stuff.
- 2:48So the, I just want to point out how fast we forget our own progress, especially you high achievers that are listening.
- 2:57We run in that deficit model.
- 2:59We find a gap, we fix the gap and we find the next gap.
- 3:03It's the proverbial goal posts.
- 3:06Keep moving.
- 3:08It's great for business.
- 3:10but it's tough on the body, man.
- 3:11I did it last year with those 555 workouts.
- 3:13It was insane.
- 3:14The progress though is easily forgotten.
- 3:18If you only measure what's broken, your body is always failing you, even when it's winning.
- 3:24You say, you're just focused.
- 3:25That's just an old negative.
- 3:27Focus on what's negative.
- 3:28You're going to get more negativity.
- 3:29So please don't do this.
- 3:32And not every signal is a warning.
- 3:34Some of them are wins you've been walking past
- 3:38So I want you to set the rule of the game, which is there's signals, not a diagnosis.
- 3:44Today, as a matter of fact, I had to slow down my workout because my back was starting to hurt.
- 3:50Particular things I was doing for legs, I have really tight hamstrings.
- 3:57And they therefore tug on my lower back.
- 3:59And we were doing some crazy hamstrings.
- 4:01And then we did some jump box jumps.
- 4:04I just said, hey, it's a signal, man.
- 4:05I need to stretch more, which is going to be my next story that I'm actually stealing.
- 4:10So if something hurts or worries you, monitor it.
- 4:13And if it persists, go to a doctor's and get it checked out.
- 4:17I want you not to be stupid.
- 4:20And this is the first test we're going to hit.
- 4:22And it's the sock test that I know it sounds dumb, but it's very difficult for me.
- 4:27This is the one I lost in my 40s.
- 4:31And it was, I literally couldn't stand up.
- 4:35and put my socks on.
- 4:36I couldn't bend over because my aforementioned hamstrings were too tight.
- 4:40So the test one is, can you put your socks on while standing up?
- 4:4730 years in the gym, I'm strong as can be.
- 4:50And in my 40s, I realized I couldn't put my sock on.
- 4:53There was tons and tons of strength.
- 4:55And I realized, how do you fix it?
- 4:57Stretching.
- 4:58So now I never start or leave without stretching at the gym.
- 5:04But it was funny because I noticed that I was struggling.
- 5:10I had to sit down to put my socks on.
- 5:12So at any rate, that's the first test.
- 5:14Can you put your sock on?
- 5:16Stand one leg, put a sock on, switch the other sock.
- 5:19No wall, no bed, no hopping.
- 5:22That's the hardest part.
- 5:24The version that I'm trying to get to is standing on one leg for 10 seconds, other foot resting behind your calf, arms on your sides, eyes straight forward.
- 5:33It's a little bit of a balance.
- 5:35And it was a study done in 2022 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
- 5:41It followed 1,702 people, age 51 to 75, for seven years.
- 5:48One in five couldn't hold it for 10 seconds.
- 5:51And they had an 85% higher risk of dying from any cause in that window.
- 5:58Whoa, 84% higher chance of dying.
- 6:02Oh, yeah.
- 6:03It's not about the sock, my friends.
- 6:05It is about balance, ankle and hip strength, and mobility all at once.
- 6:09And frankly, it's engaging that inner core, which is quietly what makes me super duper strong.
- 6:15And you lose it quietly, but you got to get it back on purpose.
- 6:21So one point, remember the one to four, one point, if you did both feet clean, before you say anything, balance is trainable.
- 6:29Brush your teeth on one leg, two minutes a day.
- 6:33Simple, easy, lemon squeezy.
- 6:36All right.
- 6:37Test two.
- 6:37Funny story.
- 6:39The BMI body mass index says I'm overweight.
- 6:43I'm five foot nine, 214 pounds.
- 6:48And every BMI chart says I'm overweight because muscle weighs more than fat.
- 6:52So I, what I want you to do is measure your waist.
- 6:58So get a
- 7:00tape measure, or if you already know your waist size, I want you to think about this.
- 7:07How tall are you?
- 7:09Again, this is second, this is the second factor.
- 7:13I want you, your waist needs to be half, under half of your height.
- 7:19Measure it at the belly button, relaxed, and don't suck it in.
- 7:24My numbers in one line, 69 inches tall, half is 34 or my waist is 34 and half would have been a little bit more there.
- 7:33So my waist is a little bit under 34.
- 7:36So half of it is what?
- 7:3738.
- 7:39So I'm under half.
- 7:41So that's good.
- 7:42The scale would have told me the opposite story.
- 7:44So test two is your waist measured at your belly button under half of your height.
- 7:52If it does.
- 7:54You passed.
- 7:55Why this matters.
- 7:56The scale can't tell muscle from body fat.
- 8:00The tape can.
- 8:01Measure your waist, not the scale.
- 8:03Believe the numbers, not the feel-good vibes.
- 8:07One point if you're under half.
- 8:11So that's two points.
- 8:13And remember, it's not that you're big boned.
- 8:16So am I.
- 8:17Bones don't live in your belly button, so don't give me any excuses.
- 8:20Guys, remember too, if you've passed these two already, send this to a friend who's been beating themselves up over the scale or has talked about putting socks on.
- 8:30Subscribe on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, and Amazon.
- 8:34And thank you for sharing.
- 8:35I'm going to keep going.
- 8:37This is the push-up test.
- 8:40So during the pandemic, the gyms were closed.
- 8:42We're going to be able to do this.
- 8:44And I did push-ups, sit-ups, jump squats.
- 8:47I did everything I could with just body weight.
- 8:52So my daughter asked me why I work out every day.
- 8:55And I told her because every day tries to break me.
- 8:58And I refuse to let it.
- 9:00And she wants to be a strong one too.
- 9:02She works out with me.
- 9:03I enjoy it.
- 9:04And I just want to remind you guys that the test is simple.
- 9:10This is, again, I've talked about socks.
- 9:12talked about the weight or your measurement of your waist.
- 9:15And now we're going to talk about pushups.
- 9:16Here's the test.
- 9:17As many clean pushups as you can in one set.
- 9:21If you're watching on YouTube, I'm demonstrating chest near the floor, body straight, no rest at the top, knees down is fine.
- 9:28Count it and note that, but keep in mind, it's a full pushup.
- 9:33So all the way down to your notes.
- 9:36So here's the proof that I want to talk about.
- 9:38Harvard study, 1,104 firefighters, average age around 40.
- 9:44For 10 years, a study happened.
- 9:46The men who could do more than 40 push-ups had a 96% lower rate of cardiovascular events than the men who could do fewer than 10.
- 9:56That means 40 push-ups, you're probably going to be safe from
- 10:08So can you do 40?
- 10:10The line should be 40, guys.
- 10:12And that's just boop, boop, boop.
- 10:14I can rip off 100 pretty easy.
- 10:16So can you get to 40?
- 10:18Don't panic if you're only at eight.
- 10:21That's your baseline.
- 10:22We'll get you there.
- 10:23It's not the final verdict.
- 10:24Doesn't mean you give up.
- 10:25That's not what we do in the Heart of the Life Nation.
- 10:28So it just gives you a baseline.
- 10:30Keep doing it every day until you can get it to nine and then to 10 and then 11.
- 10:35And you'll be see.
- 10:36You try it for two weeks.
- 10:39I assure you, you will get stronger.
- 10:43So this one, the third one, one point for 20 or more.
- 10:46Notice I said, the study said 40, but I'm going to give you one point for 20 or more.
- 10:51So write the actual number down and that's the one you're going to beat.
- 10:56And keep in mind, I don't want to hear any excuses about your shoulders.
- 11:00I got a bad shoulder.
- 11:01Do them on the kitchen counter, leaning against the counter.
- 11:04Just do them.
- 11:05Same test, just a different angle.
- 11:06You still get a number.
- 11:07So one system.
- 11:09The guy who can push himself off the floor 30 times walks into a board meeting different.
- 11:15You know it.
- 11:16There's one test left.
- 11:19And it's the one that scares people the most.
- 11:21And it's the one that research cares about the most.
- 11:23So it's the proverbial, I'm going to leave the best for last.
- 11:27I'm driving to Lifetime every morning and I cry.
- 11:31Not because it's hard.
- 11:33Because I'm full-bodied and full-minded and poor kid from eight mile on a street full of CEOs.
- 11:41And I'm grateful.
- 11:42So nobody hands you that.
- 11:44It was built.
- 11:45And I take it back one test at a time.
- 11:49So.
- 11:52This one is literally just being able to get off the floor.
- 11:58So here it is again, the floor test.
- 12:00The number four, stand in your socks, clear space, cross your feet, sit all the way down on the floor without using your hands, knees, or anything else.
- 12:13Stand back up the same way with no hands.
- 12:16This is so hard for me guys, because I have just a big ball of muscle.
- 12:22Can you do it 10 times?
- 12:25Take a point off any time you use a hand, a knee, a forearm, or side of the leg you use going down or coming up.
- 12:33Half a point if you wobble.
- 12:36Here's the study, and this is why I'm making you do this or asking you to do it.
- 12:39I'm not making you do anything, but these are just easy things.
- 12:42But there's a lot of you that can't do this.
- 12:45It's hard for me.
- 12:46In 2012, they studied 2002 adults age 51 to 80 for six years.
- 12:55Every point on the test was linked to about 20% lower risk of death.
- 13:01Scores under eight had roughly double the death rate.
- 13:04So anybody that couldn't do eight of these up and down eight times, it would be 79% higher chance of death.
- 13:11So this is about strength, balance, mobility, and confidence all in one move.
- 13:19It's the move you need on the day you fail and the day you play on the floor with your grandchildren.
- 13:25You'll thank me later.
- 13:27One point on the four test card for eight or higher.
- 13:34And guys, I don't want to hear that.
- 13:36I'll hurt myself.
- 13:37You might bonus points for if you take a video of this and send it to me, Kelly at heart of the life.com.
- 13:43But if you have to do any of these with a couch or any crutches, you lose points and you know exactly where to start.
- 13:50Four tests, two minutes, once a month, write the score down.
- 13:55And why monthly?
- 13:56It's often enough to see progress.
- 13:58Rare enough that you actually change something between tests.
- 14:03And why do I want you to write it down?
- 14:04Because progress is easily forgotten.
- 14:07And when you write something down, you commit it to memory and it means something to you.
- 14:12And remember, where you are right now once was the goal.
- 14:16The paper remembers when you won't.
- 14:18But it's also a goal to move forward to.
- 14:21So let's recap this.
- 14:24Sock standing up.
- 14:26Put on your sock standing up.
- 14:29Waist under half your height.
- 14:31Pushups.
- 14:33Off the floor, no hands.
- 14:35Four tests, four points.
- 14:38Remember, four tests, two minutes, once a month, write down the score.
- 14:42Friendly reminder, not every signal is a warning.
- 14:44So if you can't do one of these, send me an email and we'll talk it through.
- 14:48Kelly at heartandlife.com.
- 14:50Summer wins you've been walking past.
- 14:53Test these today and you'll tell me your score out of four.
- 14:55I read them and if any of these hurt or worried you,
- 15:00It's not a problem.
- 15:01It's something to look into.
- 15:05But if you can't do one of these, we might need to get you to the doctor.
- 15:10So guys, hopefully that's it.
- 15:12That helped you for easy tests.
- 15:15Most of you guys are going to crush it.
- 15:17You women will definitely kill it.
- 15:19And I want you guys to share this with somebody and keep in mind, I'm 50 now be 51 soon.
- 15:25This is
- 15:2920 to 30.
- 15:31And then everybody above that, it's for everybody.
- 15:33Test it early, test it late and test it often.
- 15:38If this resonated with you guys, please share or save this episode.
- 15:42We're going to retest in a month.
- 15:44I want you guys to send me your numbers.
