- 0:46Speaker 1: tickets at theovon.com slash T-O-U-R. And thank you guys so
- 0:52Speaker 1: much for the support. Today's guest is one of the
- 0:56Speaker 1: biggest musicians in the world. He's won all the awards.
- 1:00Speaker 1: He's set attendance records everywhere. He's celebrating the 10th anniversary
- 1:04Speaker 1: of his album, Multiply. We get to catch up right
- 1:09Speaker 1: here in London in his bar, Bertie Blossoms. And I'm
- 1:14Speaker 1: grateful for his time. Today's guest is Mr. Ed Sheeran.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Shine that light on me. I'll sit and tell you
- 1:27Speaker 1: my stories. Shine on me. And I will find a song.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I've been singing this song. Who's been your least favorite guest?
- 1:48Speaker 1: Least favorite? Oh, this guy. He was like a money guy. Oh,
- 1:54Speaker 1: Wolf of Wall Street. Oh yeah. Jordan, Jordan Belfort. Jordan Belfort. Yeah.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I just didn't like his, his inner is like, I
- 2:01Speaker 1: don't know. He seemed like a con artist and he
- 2:04Speaker 1: wouldn't kind of say yes. It was like. You watched
- 2:06Speaker 1: the movie though, right? Yeah. He seemed like a cool
- 2:10Speaker 1: con artist. Like certainly one of the better. You're right.
- 2:14Speaker 1: That's a good point. I guess he's kind of like
- 2:17Speaker 1: Jesse James maybe in a way, like one of those
- 2:19Speaker 1: wild guys. Yeah.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So what are you doing in London other than shows?
- 2:24Speaker 1: That's it, man.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Just came over to you guys' country to do shows, man.
- 2:28Speaker 1: I love that you flew from Manchester.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. Because there's a train from central Manchester into
- 2:34Speaker 2: central London. So you would have driven out of central Manchester,
- 2:37Speaker 2: flown to out of central London, and then got it.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It's such a long trip. Could have just taken an
- 2:42Speaker 1: hour and a half train. Really? Yeah. Oh, damn. I
- 2:44Speaker 1: didn't even know that.
- 2:45Speaker 3: I know.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Life hacks. Yeah, that's it. Yeah. I didn't. Damn. I
- 2:50Speaker 1: probably would have been faster. Way faster.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Way, way, way faster. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, yeah, I'm
- 2:57Speaker 1: actually genuinely feeling bad about that right now. No, it's
- 2:59Speaker 1: all right. It's all right. Planet's in crisis. Is it?
- 3:01Speaker 1: More flights. That's true. We'll do it that way. Good
- 3:07Speaker 1: to see you today, Ed. Nice to be here. Nice
- 3:09Speaker 1: to see you, man. Thanks for coming here as well.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Thanks for making the effort to come here. You're welcome.
- 3:14Speaker 1: This is birdie bottoms. Yeah. Exactly, yeah, yeah. Bertie Bottoms.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Bertie Bottoms. And how do you know if the bottoms
- 3:24Speaker 1: are Bertie or not? So it's Blossoms. It's basically... Oh, sorry.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I'm very sorry. My manager's wife is called Liberty. My
- 3:31Speaker 1: wife is called Cherry.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And me and my manager set this bar up and
- 3:35Speaker 2: Blossom for Cherry, Bertie for Liberty, Bertie Blossoms.
- 3:38Speaker 1: Oh, I love it. Yeah. Gives us an excuse to
- 3:40Speaker 1: come drink here. Oh, yeah, I bet. Dude, but sometimes like...
- 3:45Speaker 1: So is this a place where people can meet their
- 3:47Speaker 1: wife at? Is that the kind of thing that we're... Yeah. Yeah. Or,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know, husband. Or yeah, husband.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:53Speaker 1: But do you have like a wife husband meeting night,
- 3:55Speaker 1: like a night where it's like, hey, this is the
- 3:57Speaker 1: like Tuesdays. It's like spout all you can spout.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 2: They come in and they chuck the keys in and
- 4:03Speaker 2: then it's just a massive orgy. Well, that's, I mean,
- 4:06Speaker 2: that went a little far, but yeah, I was.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Just thinking like, yeah, do they at least just get
- 4:10Speaker 1: to meet somebody?
- 4:11Speaker 2: Do you know what? I, I, when I come here,
- 4:14Speaker 2: I come in this is this back room and, uh,
- 4:17Speaker 2: that's kind of it.
- 4:18Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't really, I don't really know.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Maybe.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Maybe you never know. Just kind of relax. Yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 2: This is where, like, if I'm having like a dinner
- 4:25Speaker 2: or a meeting with someone, it will usually be back here.
- 4:28Speaker 2: You can sort of like drink what you want, smoke.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Stay as long as you want.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It's cool. At Bertie Blossoms, yeah. At Bertie Blossoms, yeah. Yeah,
- 4:35Speaker 1: sorry I got it wrong, man. It's all right. Some
- 4:38Speaker 1: of the exchange rate on the language has been tough. Yeah.
- 4:41Speaker 1: I liked that when I arrived, you kept calling me like, cheers, mate. Nice, mate. Oh, yeah. Yeah,
- 4:46Speaker 1: it's good. Yeah, I've been trying to get with it, man.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I lived in Nashville for a couple of years, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: I got the drool, I think.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:53Speaker 2: Being there, yeah.
- 4:55Speaker 1: I owned a cowboy hat. Oh, wow. I had a
- 4:57Speaker 1: camouflage hoodie as well. See, yeah, you really, did you
- 5:02Speaker 1: guys hunt anything?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Do you know, I, so I lived on a lake
- 5:05Speaker 2: for the first year and I bought a fishing rod
- 5:08Speaker 2: from Walmart. Cause I was like, I'm going to go fishing.
- 5:10Speaker 2: I've never been fishing before. And I sat, I threw
- 5:12Speaker 2: it in. And then after about an hour, my mate
- 5:14Speaker 2: came up and was like, have you put bait on it?
- 5:16Speaker 2: And I was like, I didn't know you were going
- 5:18Speaker 2: to do that. So I just sat with a fishing pole.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Really? In the lake, yeah. Oh, like pantomime fishing.
- 5:24Speaker 4: I just assumed a fish would like swim past and
- 5:26Speaker 4: catch the hook.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I don't know. I'd never fished before, you know. It
- 5:30Speaker 1: wasn't something that I'd grown up doing. You've got to
- 5:33Speaker 1: put something on there. I know that now. Yeah, yeah.
- 5:37Speaker 1: I know that now. Wow, I've never heard of anybody
- 5:39Speaker 1: doing that. Maybe a child or something or a blind fella. Well,
- 5:43Speaker 1: I feel.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I feel like in some ways I am quite, I
- 5:47Speaker 2: feel like you, your age freezes the age that you
- 5:50Speaker 2: become famous, I think.
- 5:51Speaker 1: So I think in some ways I am still a teenager. Yeah. Yeah. Oh,
- 5:54Speaker 1: that's interesting.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 1: I think it's like, um, and I think some creative
- 5:58Speaker 1: people just grow, they kind of grow up slow. I
- 6:01Speaker 1: feel like in a way.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Well, you sort of don't have the same, uh, um,
- 6:07Speaker 2: I don't know, brutal personality. uh life lessons i guess
- 6:10Speaker 2: when i was like i moved to london when i
- 6:12Speaker 2: was like 17 and you i was having regular brutal
- 6:15Speaker 2: life lessons of just like no this is what the
- 6:17Speaker 2: real world is and then i think when you i
- 6:19Speaker 2: you know started doing well about 20 um about 1920
- 6:25Speaker 2: and then uh you sort of like if you make
- 6:28Speaker 2: a mistake it's it's kind of all right you know
- 6:31Speaker 2: you know you don't have like the brutal real life
- 6:33Speaker 2: lesson i guess what do you mean like when you're.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Doing when life is when you have like a success
- 6:39Speaker 1: and stuff going on? Is that what you mean?
- 6:41Speaker 2: Well, yeah, I mean, you will know this with, with, uh, comedy,
- 6:44Speaker 2: like a brutal life lesson of like, it's not going
- 6:46Speaker 2: to be easy as bombing or playing to an empty
- 6:48Speaker 2: room or blah, blah, blah. That kind of stops happening
- 6:51Speaker 2: when you have success. There's definitely, you have peaks and
- 6:53Speaker 2: troughs in your career where people are more interested or
- 6:57Speaker 2: less interested, but you don't have the, like, I don't know.
- 7:01Speaker 2: I don't think you have as many, um, normal life lessons.
- 7:05Speaker 2: You still get quite abnormal life lessons, I think, because
- 7:07Speaker 2: in the sort of celebrity sphere, it can be quite abnormal,
- 7:11Speaker 2: but you don't have the like, I don't know, regular stuff.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Yeah. Does that make sense? Yeah, I think it does, dude.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I don't, I am the worst person to ask if
- 7:21Speaker 1: something makes sense or not, to be honest with you. I, yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 1: every time people ask, my mates are so excited that
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm doing this today, by the way, who is all
- 7:28Speaker 1: of my friends. Oh, really?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Yeah. The guy that, um, there's a guy living at our,
- 7:32Speaker 2: at our house at the moment.
- 7:33Speaker 1: And, uh, he was like trying to get off work
- 7:35Speaker 1: to just come down and just say hi. Oh, and
- 7:37Speaker 1: just mill around? Like a loitering, they call it. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I think you guys, loitering must be a British thing, huh?
- 7:43Speaker 1: Because we wouldn't say that, loitering. What would you say?
- 7:45Speaker 1: We'd be like, oh, yeah, stalking. Well, stalking is more
- 7:49Speaker 1: like once you've loitered and you see something in the window,
- 7:51Speaker 1: you know. You see something. You see a bit of
- 7:54Speaker 1: tits in the distance or something. Yeah. But, yeah, that's stalking. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And then it's breaking and entering, you know. And then
- 8:01Speaker 1: it's marriage, usually. Yeah. If you have a way with words,
- 8:06Speaker 1: I think. But yeah, I think. Are you married? Loitering
- 8:11Speaker 1: sounds very British. No, no, I'm not married. I would
- 8:15Speaker 1: like to be kind of. I guess you have to
- 8:16Speaker 1: loiter more for that to happen. Yeah, I need a
- 8:18Speaker 1: bit more loitering. Yeah, I need to bring the binoculars,
- 8:20Speaker 1: you know, maybe bring a Red Bull. That's the loiterer
- 8:23Speaker 1: you got to really be aware of. The Red Bull loiterer. Yeah,
- 8:26Speaker 1: just standing there with a Red Bull. Small sips.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Small sips. I haven't had Red Bull in years, man. Oh,
- 8:33Speaker 1: probably good for you.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, there was a time when I was doing like
- 8:36Speaker 2: loads and loads of like breakfast TVs and radios and
- 8:40Speaker 2: stuff like that.
- 8:40Speaker 1: It used to be those massive monster drinks. When you
- 8:42Speaker 1: were touring, like to get your singles out there and
- 8:44Speaker 1: stuff like that?
- 8:44Speaker 2: You used to kind of like have to turn up
- 8:46Speaker 2: at like, 3.30 a.m. to a German weather program to
- 8:50Speaker 2: play 30 seconds of your new single.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So like those stages, yeah. Chance of rain, but chance
- 8:56Speaker 1: of Ed Sheeran first. I remember it so clearly playing.
- 8:59Speaker 2: I got up at like, they were doing it in
- 9:01Speaker 2: some like theme park in the middle of Germany and
- 9:03Speaker 2: it was just obviously empty because it was like 4 a.m.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Yeah, they love their theme parks there.
- 9:08Speaker 2: And I start playing on this thing, on this weather
- 9:10Speaker 2: program and then I can see the credits rolling underneath
- 9:13Speaker 2: me like 10 seconds in and I'm like, am I
- 9:16Speaker 2: the fucking play out music? And then they just stopped it.
- 9:18Speaker 2: So I played 10 seconds of my new single basically.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:22Speaker 2: Germany was a tough market for me for a while.
- 9:25Speaker 2: And then the egg was cracked and now we're good.
- 9:28Speaker 2: You'd think they'd take a look at you and be like, oh,
- 9:30Speaker 2: he could be one of us, you know? I feel
- 9:32Speaker 2: like you look like a closet German. Is that fair
- 9:36Speaker 2: to say to somebody?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't even know. I'm just loitering.
- 9:39Speaker 2: No, I think, well, the red hair is more Celtic.
- 9:41Speaker 2: So I'd say the Scottish or Irish or like the Norwegians,
- 9:45Speaker 2: I think. would look at me and be like, you
- 9:48Speaker 2: want to, there's some Viking, you got a bit of
- 9:50Speaker 2: Viking in you.
- 9:50Speaker 1: We'll take them. Yeah. Yeah. I might have a little
- 9:52Speaker 1: bit like off. You'll see me in like the frozen
- 9:54Speaker 1: food area, kind of like in the store, you know? Yeah.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I'll mill about in there, you know? Like, you know what's.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Your uh background heritage have you got european.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Polish yeah nicaraguan right yeah my dad was from um
- 10:09Speaker 1: nicaragua his parents met down there and he was born
- 10:12Speaker 1: there and then my mother i don't know dude but
- 10:16Speaker 1: Wherever she's from, they have some real one-of-a-kind type ladies.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Do you have rage in you? Are you an angry guy?
- 10:23Speaker 2: You seem a very chill guy. Can you have an
- 10:25Speaker 2: argument with someone? Yeah, I don't know if I have
- 10:27Speaker 2: an argument.
- 10:28Speaker 1: I have trouble processing my feelings, so I'm always the
- 10:33Speaker 1: start and stop. I'm the guy who can't get the
- 10:36Speaker 1: gear shift to work or something. You're watching that guy drive.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I'm like a student driver when it comes to my feelings.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Do they have student drivers here? Yeah, yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I didn't learn to drive until... I was 24. Cause like,
- 10:48Speaker 2: as I said, with the train thing, public transport here
- 10:50Speaker 2: is actually really, really good. Um, so I never learned
- 10:53Speaker 2: to drive. And then mate on my first driving test.
- 10:56Speaker 2: So I'd learned, I was learned to drive for like eight,
- 10:59Speaker 2: eight months. And, uh, on the first test I failed
- 11:03Speaker 2: cause I was going around a roundabout and my mom
- 11:05Speaker 2: called me to see if I passed the test. And
- 11:08Speaker 2: I just quickly took it and like canceled the call.
- 11:10Speaker 2: And then the driving instructor was just like, you've just
- 11:13Speaker 2: failed the test for that. And she was ringing to
- 11:14Speaker 2: see if I'd.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Done well. Yeah. Oh yeah. I failed. God, dude. That's
- 11:20Speaker 1: when you got to just, yeah, that's kind of the time.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I'm glad my mom didn't care that much. Yeah. You know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: because yeah, I passed. But you probably, but Americans can
- 11:28Speaker 1: drive from like 16, right? But they shouldn't all be
- 11:30Speaker 1: allowed to drive. And they'll do.
- 11:32Speaker 2: You think American drivers, man? Like when I'm over there,
- 11:35Speaker 2: I'm like, this is fucking sketchy. They drive to kill.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Yeah. They drive.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I sort of feel like here we have to learn
- 11:41Speaker 2: how to like parallel park and do all these other things.
- 11:43Speaker 1: I think in America it's like, can you reverse? Good. Yeah. Past. Well, it's,
- 11:48Speaker 1: I think people are, America, just anything can be a
- 11:51Speaker 1: weapon there. You know, it's like. So what have you
- 11:54Speaker 1: got hidden under your bed? What's your weapon? Oh. Weapon
- 11:57Speaker 1: of choice. I've probably a couple knives. A lot of
- 12:00Speaker 1: my kitchen knives are in my room. Cool. Kind of
- 12:02Speaker 1: strategically placed or whatever. You know, like, oh, I'll be here.
- 12:05Speaker 1: I need a knife. And you have little kids. No kids.
- 12:07Speaker 1: So they're not like reaching under the bed and finding
- 12:09Speaker 1: a huge. No, no, no. And I go small blade
- 12:12Speaker 1: kind of. you know i'm more of a you know.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think i'd be more terrified of you with a
- 12:16Speaker 2: kitchen blade than yeah i'm more of a chef than
- 12:19Speaker 2: like a hatchet guy you know i'm more like a
- 12:21Speaker 2: juliana burglar but have you got a meat cleaver in
- 12:24Speaker 2: the bedroom that would be terrifying seeing you running down
- 12:27Speaker 2: a corridor fully naked with a meat.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Cleaver yeah dude especially yeah if somebody thinks they want
- 12:33Speaker 1: if somebody orders a small sausage dude Because I'll freaking
- 12:36Speaker 1: cut one up right there. It'll be out of business
- 12:39Speaker 1: in a moment.
- 12:40Speaker 2: If you had a home invasion and you had a
- 12:42Speaker 2: meat cleaver in there, that would be far more terrifying.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Oh, I would yell, I have a meat cleaver. That's
- 12:47Speaker 1: the first thing I would yell at them. I think
- 12:51Speaker 1: that would be something else. Dude, what was something I
- 12:55Speaker 1: was going to tell you? Oh, what was I thinking? Yeah, dude,
- 12:57Speaker 1: I don't know a ton. I know some British music.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We've had a nice time over here. We went to Ireland.
- 13:04Speaker 1: Not Britain though. And not, that's not Britain. No. And
- 13:07Speaker 1: if you make that mistake in Ireland, they will boo you.
- 13:09Speaker 1: They don't. Yeah. If you say, if you say it's
- 13:11Speaker 1: good to be back in the UK, you will get
- 13:12Speaker 1: booed there. But if you say fuck England, they will cheer. Yeah,
- 13:16Speaker 1: I will. Actually, if you say that in Wales, Scotland
- 13:19Speaker 1: and Ireland, they'll cheer. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:21Speaker 2: Especially now, like Scotland now in the, in the euros.
- 13:25Speaker 2: So I played the euros launch whatever on, on Wednesday,
- 13:28Speaker 2: I was in Germany and it's.
- 13:30Speaker 1: A football game. Football's yeah. Okay. Soccer footballs.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Uh, and, uh, I made the decision to wear an
- 13:35Speaker 2: England shirt on stage in Germany and it was mostly
- 13:39Speaker 2: German and Scottish fans. Cause that's the first game didn't,
- 13:42Speaker 2: didn't go down hugely well.
- 13:43Speaker 1: But then I was like, I'm not going to wear
- 13:44Speaker 1: a German shirt. Because that's posing. Yeah.
- 13:48Speaker 2: I got given like five German shirts before the show
- 13:50Speaker 2: as well to like take pictures with and blah, blah, blah.
- 13:53Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm just not going to wear these. Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:56Speaker 1: People get so competitive about that kind of stuff, man.
- 13:59Speaker 2: Who's your football team? Like who are you supporting in
- 14:03Speaker 2: the Euros? You've got to like subscribe to some of it.
- 14:06Speaker 1: Probably Scotland, probably.
- 14:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 14:09Speaker 1: They're playing today, playing Germany today. Of course they are.
- 14:11Speaker 2: If they beat Germany, that's a big, big party in Scotland.
- 14:16Speaker 1: Oh, they don't have a chance, I don't think, but... No,
- 14:18Speaker 1: you would be surprised. You think so?
- 14:20Speaker 2: Anything can happen. I hope that they win today. We
- 14:23Speaker 2: lost to Iceland the other day.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Oh, God. Yeah. And they don't even have green grass,
- 14:27Speaker 1: do they? That's fucking unbelievable, dude. I mean, that's a
- 14:34Speaker 1: bit of a sad thing. I like it, though.
- 14:37Speaker 2: I like the unpredictableness of football. I find, like, American sport.
- 14:41Speaker 2: I find really, um, I love watching American sport, but
- 14:45Speaker 2: there's no, uh, penalty for being bad. You just get
- 14:49Speaker 2: given more money in first draft. So you have your teams.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:53Speaker 2: And then if someone's bad, they go to the bottom,
- 14:54Speaker 2: they get first draft. They can get better again here.
- 14:57Speaker 2: If you're bad, you're out of the league. You're just out.
- 14:59Speaker 2: And you go into a league that's not on television
- 15:01Speaker 2: and you have to like fight to get back up
- 15:03Speaker 2: into the league that's on television. And if you're bad
- 15:04Speaker 2: in that league, you go to a lower league, my
- 15:06Speaker 2: football team, like for the past. six years have not
- 15:11Speaker 2: been on television at all. We were in the third
- 15:13Speaker 2: division two years ago. Um, and we've just finally got
- 15:16Speaker 2: back up to the, the premier league, but it's more exciting.
- 15:19Speaker 1: It's unpredictable.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Whereas like I'm a big Tennessee Titans fan and they're
- 15:23Speaker 2: kind of always here.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, they're pretty mid. Yeah. Yeah. yeah but
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know what even in the game itself i didn't
- 15:29Speaker 1: realize that till you just said that it's more unpredictable
- 15:32Speaker 1: in the game it's like with soccer like you can
- 15:35Speaker 1: get the ball back in a moment yeah so you
- 15:37Speaker 1: could suddenly be an offense but on in the nfl
- 15:39Speaker 1: it's like it's very tactical yeah you know it's gonna
- 15:42Speaker 1: be a little while before you get the ball back
- 15:44Speaker 1: you know and then there's gonna be.
- 15:45Speaker 2: Some drop your guard in soccer for five minutes your
- 15:49Speaker 2: team can be like there was one uh one world
- 15:52Speaker 2: cup that was in brazil and brazil were arguably the
- 15:56Speaker 2: best team at that time um and germany ended up
- 16:00Speaker 2: beating them 7-1 just because there was like 20 minutes
- 16:02Speaker 2: of them letting their guard down.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah that was that was insane but i remember that
- 16:07Speaker 1: i was in vegas actually when i um when I
- 16:09Speaker 1: was watching it. That's where I met you at in Vegas. Yeah, man.
- 16:12Speaker 1: That was crazy. No fucking, what was that? Cause like
- 16:14Speaker 1: the chains hookers were just supposed to be performing, right?
- 16:17Speaker 1: I had gone, I was doing my final tour show.
- 16:19Speaker 2: So we basically were meant to play, play the allegiance
- 16:22Speaker 2: stadium in August and we'd set up our whole state.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I have an in the round stage and we have
- 16:28Speaker 2: these massive pylons that basically hang up all the speakers
- 16:32Speaker 2: and screens and stuff like that.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And it's weighted.
- 16:35Speaker 2: So everything has to be exactly the same way. Um,
- 16:38Speaker 2: I'm in a regular stadium. It's a concrete floor. You
- 16:41Speaker 2: put them in, they stay there. We didn't realize that
- 16:43Speaker 2: allegiance stadium didn't have a concrete floor. I don't know
- 16:46Speaker 2: where that, uh, misalignment happened, but anyways, we put it in,
- 16:51Speaker 2: it has a rubber floor and the stage was slowly slipping.
- 16:54Speaker 2: And these are like, you know, tons and tons and
- 16:57Speaker 2: tons and tons of steel would have fallen on people.
- 16:59Speaker 2: So we had to cancel the gig 20 minutes before
- 17:02Speaker 2: it started. And Vegas isn't a place where like people.
- 17:06Speaker 2: like 80,000 people that live in Vegas are going to go.
- 17:08Speaker 2: People had flown in, they got hotels and so hot.
- 17:11Speaker 2: It was like one of the worst days on tour.
- 17:14Speaker 2: It was just, it was grim. So we rescheduled the
- 17:17Speaker 2: Allegiant Stadium gig for then. So that was my final
- 17:20Speaker 2: show of the tour. And yeah, we got pretty fucking
- 17:25Speaker 2: lit up afterwards. And that's where I saw you. I'd
- 17:28Speaker 2: kind of, I know the Chainsmokers, so I'd sort of
- 17:29Speaker 2: turned up and then, yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 1: They're great. Kind of turned into karaoke. Yeah.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Cause I was sort of thinking if you'd spent money
- 17:35Speaker 2: on like a VIP table that night, see the chain
- 17:37Speaker 2: smokers and then suddenly just there's drunk me on stage
- 17:41Speaker 2: in a, avengers mask.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Yeah it was good it was like and here's the
- 17:45Speaker 1: thing man people knew it was you okay oh yeah
- 17:48Speaker 1: yeah yeah i think at first.
- 17:49Speaker 2: I was very aware that like i was just wearing
- 17:51Speaker 2: the mask they were wearing okay it was halloween remember
- 17:54Speaker 2: it was halloween yeah let's say that so do you
- 17:57Speaker 2: know do you know those guys yeah i.
- 17:58Speaker 1: Just know them from like seeing them at different shows
- 18:00Speaker 1: and being around them and stuff like that but their
- 18:02Speaker 1: energy is always fun and good you know and like
- 18:05Speaker 1: um I just love getting to spend time with them.
- 18:08Speaker 1: Their shows are always fun. Like I go to their
- 18:10Speaker 1: shows sometimes. I'll go to Diplo. But I go to
- 18:12Speaker 1: Fred again recently. I like going to see what some
- 18:15Speaker 1: of the DJs are like, you know. But then you
- 18:18Speaker 1: got up and it seemed like you were going to
- 18:19Speaker 1: maybe do one song. And I was like, how are
- 18:20Speaker 1: they going to get, are they going to go like
- 18:22Speaker 1: a little bit more ballady? What are they going to do?
- 18:25Speaker 1: And then by like four songs later, it's your show, man.
- 18:31Speaker 1: That was it, dude. Four songs later, and it's an
- 18:34Speaker 1: itch here, and people are just kissing, and there's doves
- 18:38Speaker 1: and stuff. Where did we get a bunch of fucking doves?
- 18:43Speaker 1: It was very interesting, I felt, like people were making
- 18:45Speaker 1: wishes and stuff and hugging their grandmothers. Are you going
- 18:48Speaker 1: to go to any of the World Cup games in
- 18:50Speaker 1: 26 in America? I probably will. And that's soccer, yeah? Yeah.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 18:55Speaker 1: I'll probably get over to some of them. Our soccer's
- 18:57Speaker 1: been pretty bad, man. Our country's going through a lot,
- 19:01Speaker 1: I'll be honest with you. It's one of the reasons
- 19:03Speaker 1: why I'm over here. Have you not noticed ours is too?
- 19:08Speaker 2: I feel like English people and Americans, they're like, oh,
- 19:12Speaker 2: do you know what?
- 19:13Speaker 1: The other place is better. I feel like the world
- 19:14Speaker 1: is going through quite.
- 19:18Speaker 1: A lot.
- 19:18Speaker 2: Like we, we travel a lot and it's like election
- 19:20Speaker 2: time all around the world and everywhere I go, I'm like, Oh,
- 19:22Speaker 2: it's kind of the same here as well. I feel
- 19:24Speaker 2: like everyone is going through a shift.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Oh, that's a good point. You guys elections are happening
- 19:29Speaker 1: right now, huh? Yeah. Yeah. I, it's pretty, pretty bonkers.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Some of the shit that's coming out.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Like, it's like, you're sort of watching these interviews being like,
- 19:38Speaker 2: Does your brain connect to your mouth? I sometimes feel
- 19:40Speaker 2: like people don't want to get elected, but they're saying
- 19:43Speaker 2: stuff to just be like, now I'm done, man, I'm done.
- 19:45Speaker 1: It's mad. Well, I'm sure you probably, there's probably times
- 19:47Speaker 1: you get halfway into something. You're like, I don't know
- 19:50Speaker 1: about this. Like people get stage fright at the altar
- 19:53Speaker 1: all the time sometimes, or sometimes you'll buy something at
- 19:56Speaker 1: the market and you'll put it back on the, like
- 19:58Speaker 1: with the gums or the candies or something. You'll put
- 20:00Speaker 1: like just a pack of like sausages back there or something.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And so- I think that there's, if there's knocking, there's
- 20:07Speaker 1: someone doing work next door, by the way, as long
- 20:09Speaker 1: as it's not an indentured servant, I think we're good.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Just because Britain's had their history, but, um, and I'm
- 20:16Speaker 1: not saying America didn't polish it up a little, but
- 20:18Speaker 1: we've all, you know, we've all sinned a little, um,
- 20:21Speaker 1: or we didn't, but forefathers definitely, you know, you had
- 20:24Speaker 1: some crazy plans, but, um, yeah, dude, but yeah, it's
- 20:28Speaker 1: nice to be over here. I like, so like I'll
- 20:30Speaker 1: listen to James Blake. I like his music a lot,
- 20:33Speaker 1: you know, So I'll listen to some James Blake and, yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I'll listen to Fred again. What other kind of, I'm
- 20:40Speaker 1: trying to think of British music do I listen to? Oh,
- 20:45Speaker 1: Nice Day for a Wide Wedding. Oh, cool, yeah. That guy,
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know him? No, I don't. I mean, I know
- 20:52Speaker 1: the song. I don't know him personally. Start again. Every
- 20:58Speaker 1: little sister. Maybe that's not the lyric. That seems a
- 21:01Speaker 1: little bit perverse. Who's your NFL team then? Oh, sorry,
- 21:03Speaker 1: I'm a New Orleans Saints fan. Cool. Are you from
- 21:05Speaker 1: New Orleans then? Yeah, that's where I'm from, out of Louisiana.
- 21:07Speaker 1: So why move to Nashville? Well, I lived in LA
- 21:10Speaker 1: for a while and then Nashville was open during the pandemic. Yeah, yeah.
- 21:13Speaker 1: So you could do what you want. You could like,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you know... spit you could spit on people and they
- 21:19Speaker 1: were still okay with it you know like so it
- 21:22Speaker 1: definitely like it's.
- 21:23Speaker 2: A good criteria to move to a town just be
- 21:25Speaker 2: like can I spit on people.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Yeah or you know you could you know you could
- 21:29Speaker 1: just you know I mean you couldn't even yeah it
- 21:32Speaker 1: just that mask when you think about what the mask
- 21:35Speaker 1: it just like you could I will say this though
- 21:38Speaker 1: you could look at somebody and kind of lick your
- 21:40Speaker 1: lips in a way that you wouldn't normally be able
- 21:42Speaker 1: to and that's something I miss you know just being
- 21:45Speaker 1: point blank.
- 21:46Speaker 2: I like the fact, I can move, I really love
- 21:49Speaker 2: public transport and I can move around easier now since
- 21:52Speaker 2: COVID because wearing a ski mask is not seen as creepy.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Yeah. People just, you're just sort of in a ski mask. Oh,
- 21:58Speaker 1: that's a good point. You're just still in one. Yeah. Yeah.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Every now and then, yeah. If I go in the
- 22:01Speaker 1: airport now and I'll just wear like one of those
- 22:03Speaker 1: long neck ones, you know? Yeah. And I definitely feel like, oh,
- 22:06Speaker 1: people are like, who's the weirdo still with the neck
- 22:08Speaker 1: and the glasses and the hat. And I'll even put
- 22:11Speaker 1: a wig on sometimes and like, who the hell? is
- 22:15Speaker 1: this lady? It's a good idea. Yeah. Dressing up as
- 22:20Speaker 1: Santa Claus when I went to the Christmas.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Cause I was like, I was like, I really need
- 22:24Speaker 2: to go and get Christmas supplies, but the supermarket is
- 22:26Speaker 2: obviously really busy at Christmas. And I'm not like, I don't,
- 22:30Speaker 2: I don't blend in that well. And I was like,
- 22:32Speaker 2: if I dressed up as Santa Claus, maybe that'd be fine.
- 22:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Get your Christmas supplies. Everyone's like, santa's here
- 22:39Speaker 1: you know did i see that there's no way i
- 22:41Speaker 1: saw you sharing a santa claus buying bagels um did
- 22:45Speaker 1: you see that fighter that looked like you the other
- 22:46Speaker 1: day it was like on a ufc fight or something.
- 22:48Speaker 2: Oh my god yeah well i mean i thought it
- 22:50Speaker 2: was your brother well he is a lookalike he's oh
- 22:53Speaker 2: he is did you not see the thing where there
- 22:55Speaker 2: was the floyd mayweather no the ksi logan paul fight
- 22:59Speaker 2: and i was like i was ringside but it was
- 23:02Speaker 2: this this lookalike and some youtubers had done a thing
- 23:05Speaker 2: where they were like let's try and fool them. And
- 23:07Speaker 2: they got this lookalike and Eddie Hearn essentially just gave
- 23:11Speaker 2: my lookalike ringside tickets. And he was only, the only
- 23:14Speaker 2: way that he was found out was Justin Bieber turned
- 23:16Speaker 2: up and was like, that's not it.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Wow. And yeah. But yeah, I did see it. I
- 23:22Speaker 1: did see it. Did you see the Eddie Hall one? No,
- 23:24Speaker 1: I didn't see it. What is it? Can we watch it?
- 23:25Speaker 1: Can we get the Eddie Hall one up? Because look,
- 23:28Speaker 1: I just, the other night I was going through, it
- 23:29Speaker 1: was on TikTok or something the other night. So this
- 23:31Speaker 1: is the same, the same fight. And it pulls up,
- 23:33Speaker 1: you know? Just go on the shorter one, like the real. Down. Oh, sorry,
- 23:38Speaker 1: the shorts. Just down there. Yeah, one of them. Just
- 23:44Speaker 1: two on one. Oh, my gosh, huh? And are those
- 23:47Speaker 1: the Island boys? Jedward. Who's he beating? Oh, they're who? Oh,
- 23:56Speaker 1: that guy's Irish for sure, the one he tossed. Like, wow.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Oh, my God, huh? Just take a sleeping pill. So
- 24:05Speaker 2: that was the same night, I think, that my lookalike was.
- 24:08Speaker 1: Doing the fight? Well, this is what it's coming to.
- 24:11Speaker 1: That's good, boys. We get it. I don't think... This
- 24:14Speaker 1: is what it's coming to. No, Ed, I'm just going
- 24:15Speaker 1: to let you know. This is the kind of thing
- 24:17Speaker 1: that it's coming to. People are going to... You're going
- 24:19Speaker 1: to have, like, you know, freckled stepmother versus, like, you know...
- 24:26Speaker 1: gambling addict vietnamese or something you know it's kind of
- 24:30Speaker 1: it's getting that's we're all going to be bet it's
- 24:33Speaker 1: just constant betting i think you can feel it coming
- 24:35Speaker 1: up in the world it's like would you do one
- 24:37Speaker 1: of them against a male or female you think.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Uh again against caleb Oh, against Caleb Presley? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Oh, man. You and him both have the mischievous look
- 24:54Speaker 1: in your eyes all the same time. So that's how
- 24:56Speaker 1: you guys could be related. I had a good night
- 24:59Speaker 1: with Caleb. Did you? I was just with him in
- 25:00Speaker 1: Lisbon yesterday. Yeah, he's fun. My friend got married, and
- 25:05Speaker 1: we went to Lisbon. I went over there to see him.
- 25:07Speaker 1: Caleb came to a show in Dublin, and then we
- 25:09Speaker 1: went over there. It was really cool. Lisbon's amazing. Lisbon
- 25:12Speaker 1: is amazing. Lisbon's amazing. Caleb's great, though, dude. He's very smart. mischievous,
- 25:17Speaker 1: he likes to like. Who do you think wins? Between
- 25:20Speaker 1: me and Caleb? Yeah.
- 25:22Speaker 2: That's a great question. You and him both get in
- 25:24Speaker 2: a cage. You put on those little gloves.
- 25:27Speaker 1: But how little the gloves. Here's what I think you
- 25:29Speaker 1: should do. Gloves that are way too small. Not just
- 25:31Speaker 1: gloves that are like weighted gloves, but like extra small.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:35Speaker 1: And then your hands are like this, you know? And
- 25:37Speaker 1: then you have to fight. Oh, dang. Did you ever
- 25:40Speaker 1: fight at school? Did you do wrestling and stuff? I've
- 25:42Speaker 1: gotten beat. I got beaten a decent amount as a lad,
- 25:45Speaker 1: I remember. Um, I remember at our school, if you
- 25:49Speaker 1: got in a fight during school, this is what they
- 25:51Speaker 1: made you do. You had to stand in the hall,
- 25:53Speaker 1: whoever you fought, and you had to put your hands
- 25:55Speaker 1: on each other's shoulders for the rest of the day
- 25:57Speaker 1: and just be there and looking at each other and talking.
- 26:00Speaker 1: So by the end of the day, you were friends
- 26:01Speaker 1: with whoever you fought, you know, and all the kids
- 26:03Speaker 1: would come down the hall between class and call you
- 26:05Speaker 1: a wanker or whatever, you know, or a That sounds
- 26:09Speaker 1: actually quite a good way to solve problems. I thought
- 26:11Speaker 1: it was. Yeah. Because it was no, by the end
- 26:12Speaker 1: of the day, you had to make each other laugh
- 26:15Speaker 1: or figure out what went on. And you realize that like, yeah,
- 26:18Speaker 1: you're probably similar. Similar. Yeah. Well, you certainly didn't hate
- 26:24Speaker 1: each other by the end of the day. Yeah. Or
- 26:25Speaker 1: if you thought the guy was a bully, you got
- 26:27Speaker 1: to kind of figure it out with him. And you
- 26:29Speaker 1: work out why he was being a bully or lashing out. Right.
- 26:32Speaker 1: What was going on. It's just kind of an interesting program, man. Um, yeah,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I don't have a wife, but I'm probably going to
- 26:38Speaker 1: get one, one of these days. And so do you, um,
- 26:43Speaker 1: do you think it's hard? Cause you're like the love,
- 26:45Speaker 1: like a lot of your songs have like a lot
- 26:48Speaker 1: of love in them, you know? And so is it
- 26:51Speaker 1: hard to still be like, does your wife ever feel like, oh,
- 26:55Speaker 1: you write all the good songs for the whole world?
- 26:59Speaker 2: No, I think, you know, we went to, we went
- 27:01Speaker 2: to high school together. So we've known each other 22
- 27:03Speaker 2: years now. and all of our mates are the same friends.
- 27:09Speaker 2: So we're like, we have like a little Suffolk cohort
- 27:12Speaker 2: and it's, she's very, she's very comfortable with, she's known
- 27:16Speaker 2: me through everything. So she's not like, there's not really
- 27:20Speaker 2: any self-consciousness that comes through it, I guess. And we are,
- 27:24Speaker 2: I mean, we're with each other all the, I'm going
- 27:27Speaker 2: to see her after this, um, to have a little,
- 27:30Speaker 2: little break, but like, um, Yeah, we're with each other
- 27:33Speaker 2: all the time.
- 27:34Speaker 1: So we talk a lot.
- 27:35Speaker 2: I find that lots of little, small, uncomfortable conversations save arguments.
- 27:42Speaker 2: So you just, like, if anything ever comes up, and
- 27:45Speaker 2: we'll just sort of nip it in the bud there
- 27:46Speaker 2: rather than let, like, resentment build.
- 27:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I struggle with that sometimes, man. Yeah, I'll just,
- 27:51Speaker 1: I'll want to try and, yeah, I don't know. Sometimes
- 27:54Speaker 1: I can feel, like, right now you should probably say this.
- 27:56Speaker 1: That way everything will be smooth. And there's a part
- 27:58Speaker 1: of me that's like... I was like that too.
- 27:59Speaker 2: And then you just have to be like... And just
- 28:01Speaker 2: say it. And then it's actually fine. I kind of
- 28:04Speaker 2: do that with like everyone. I'm just trying to be
- 28:07Speaker 2: like as honest as possible at all points. And then
- 28:09Speaker 2: there's not really, you kind of see it as like
- 28:13Speaker 2: bricks in a backpack. Like you've got loads of bricks
- 28:16Speaker 2: in your backpack. And if you can take a brick
- 28:17Speaker 2: out quickly, it just lightens the load. So it's just
- 28:21Speaker 2: getting the bricks out.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Yeah. You know? Yeah, gosh. I wonder how many relationships
- 28:25Speaker 1: for years husbands and wives just sit on their word.
- 28:28Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I think a lot.
- 28:30Speaker 1: And just go through every, and just sitting on a,
- 28:33Speaker 1: for a sentence, just one sentence.
- 28:34Speaker 2: And then suddenly they're running at you with a meat cleaver. Yeah, dude, yeah.
- 28:39Speaker 2: And just serving the last sausage, brother, in the dark hallway.
- 28:42Speaker 1: Yeah. Like a good man over there in Leeds or wherever.
- 28:47Speaker 1: What's the most dangerous place to be around here? Here?
- 28:52Speaker 2: I'd say every area of London has, literally every area
- 28:57Speaker 2: is sketchy.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Like I think that you can not be anywhere. Uh,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I love that. Yeah.
- 29:04Speaker 2: It's not, it's not like a segregated city. There's like,
- 29:07Speaker 2: it's very, everybody's scared. No, I mean the nice areas
- 29:12Speaker 2: are sketchy. The bad areas are sketchy, but you just
- 29:14Speaker 2: have to not do stupid shit. Like if you, if
- 29:18Speaker 2: you wander around, uh, with, I dunno, like a Louis
- 29:24Speaker 2: Vuitton duffel bag, and a 200 grand watch, you are
- 29:27Speaker 2: going to get robbed.
- 29:30Speaker 1: But just don't do that. Yeah, don't do it. Yeah,
- 29:33Speaker 1: I think, and y'all's robberies all have clues and stuff.
- 29:36Speaker 1: That's what I like about London. Clues? Or like if,
- 29:39Speaker 1: you know, if there's- something that happens, it's like, Oh,
- 29:41Speaker 1: he is a clue, you know, and the, the detectives
- 29:45Speaker 1: or whatever, then they're hot on your trail. That's what I'll,
- 29:48Speaker 1: that's one of like the, I think the things that like.
- 29:50Speaker 2: You guys, I love that everything that you think about
- 29:53Speaker 2: England is based on movies and like, Cause it's the
- 29:55Speaker 2: way that I used to view America as well. I used,
- 29:57Speaker 2: I remember going, I was, uh, my wife went to
- 30:00Speaker 2: Duke and we went back.
- 30:01Speaker 1: My mother went to Duke. Oh, good, good university.
- 30:05Speaker 2: But I remember we were in town for something and
- 30:07Speaker 2: we were driving past the frat houses and I was like,
- 30:10Speaker 2: I've never been to a frat party. Should we just
- 30:12Speaker 2: knock on the door of one of them and they'll
- 30:15Speaker 2: be having a frat party like the movies.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And like, Terry was like, yeah, I guess so. They're
- 30:19Speaker 1: a bit, it's not like that vibe.
- 30:21Speaker 2: And I, uh, we went up, I knocked on the door,
- 30:23Speaker 2: one of them opened the door and was like, why
- 30:24Speaker 2: are you knocking on our door? And then we went
- 30:26Speaker 2: in and it was just like three dudes and one
- 30:29Speaker 2: guy who had his face super glued to the floor.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And it was like, not the vibe. And I was like,
- 30:33Speaker 2: this isn't like the movie. He was just literally like
- 30:37Speaker 2: this face super glued down. And they were just like, yeah,
- 30:39Speaker 2: we don't really know.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Yeah i think well you it's hard to get that
- 30:43Speaker 1: guy up i bet and then yeah there are this
- 30:45Speaker 1: in there manufacturing rehypenols or something like that a ghb
- 30:49Speaker 1: or whatever a lot of homemade ghb in those areas
- 30:51Speaker 1: but yeah it's not it's not like it's not like
- 30:54Speaker 1: the movies yeah it's not yeah nothing's kind of ever
- 30:56Speaker 1: like i don't know like even today we pulled up
- 30:58Speaker 1: in a nodding hill and i was like we're going
- 31:01Speaker 1: to be in love or whatever.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 31:03Speaker 1: You know, because like.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Notting Hill is quite, this is quite like, if you're
- 31:06Speaker 2: talking about like nice areas.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Yeah, it just seemed romantic, you know, like you'd meet like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: you know, Paddington Bear is having a coffee with a
- 31:14Speaker 1: woman or something over there, you know, like... Bestiality. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:19Speaker 1: Caffeine-fueled bestiality, dude. That's our new... Have you ever done... Yeah, yeah.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Have I ever... No, have you ever... considered a collab
- 31:30Speaker 1: with paddington bear.
- 31:31Speaker 2: Uh i yeah do you know what i would love
- 31:34Speaker 2: to do a uh kids movie now now that i
- 31:38Speaker 2: have children i'd love to do some some form of
- 31:40Speaker 2: animated something with with music i don't know if it's
- 31:43Speaker 2: paddington bear or yeah something because he's a famous british
- 31:48Speaker 2: bear isn't he very well he's actually from where's paddington
- 31:51Speaker 2: bear from he Peru.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 2: He's from, he's from, well, but in the, in the book,
- 31:56Speaker 2: he's from Peru. He travels over to England. He's obsessed
- 31:58Speaker 2: with jam. Is it jam sandwiches or peanut butter sandwich jam?
- 32:01Speaker 2: And was he allowed to stay after Brexit or was he, well,
- 32:03Speaker 2: this is me. This is, so I have an Irish
- 32:05Speaker 2: passport and, uh, you can only spend 90 days in
- 32:10Speaker 2: Europe if you're, um, English.
- 32:12Speaker 1: So I was like, I'm, I have the Irish passport.
- 32:15Speaker 2: I can tour more in, in Europe, but like none
- 32:17Speaker 2: of my crew can spend more than 90 days there.
- 32:20Speaker 2: And it used to be, Brexit, I think everyone has
- 32:23Speaker 2: agreed that Brexit didn't work. And I think there will
- 32:28Speaker 2: be a time where we will try and backtrack it
- 32:30Speaker 2: a little bit and get back into Europe. But yeah,
- 32:35Speaker 2: it was such a divisive thing at the time.
- 32:37Speaker 1: Oh, it was?
- 32:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like 50% of the country thought we
- 32:40Speaker 2: should leave, 50% of the country thought we should stay.
- 32:42Speaker 1: It was a.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Very, very, very small margin that we left. And I
- 32:46Speaker 2: feel like the people that voted leave now are like, actually...
- 32:52Speaker 2: wasn't the best idea.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Maybe we should have stayed. Yeah. That's how we're feeling,
- 32:55Speaker 1: I think, after the Mayflower and everything. I think we
- 32:58Speaker 1: might build another Mayflower. What is the Mayflower? The ship
- 33:01Speaker 1: that we left on a long time ago. Right. And
- 33:03Speaker 1: when you say we... A lot of people. Yeah. I
- 33:08Speaker 1: think a lot of people are going to be coming back. Yeah, yeah.
- 33:10Speaker 1: I really do. Like we might build a June flower,
- 33:13Speaker 1: July flower. I don't know. We're going to build one month.
- 33:16Speaker 1: We're going to build a big boat, and I think
- 33:17Speaker 1: we're coming back. Cool. I just don't think it's panned
- 33:20Speaker 1: out as well as we expected over there. It's just
- 33:22Speaker 1: gotten kind of– like a lot of the tradition, I think,
- 33:24Speaker 1: is disappearing in America. And maybe that's good. Like sometimes
- 33:27Speaker 1: you just don't, I think that's the scary thing about
- 33:29Speaker 1: when tradition goes away.
- 33:31Speaker 2: What is the, because I see America as like lots
- 33:34Speaker 2: and lots and lots of traditions and cultures. What is
- 33:38Speaker 2: the one central tradition that Americans can agree on?
- 33:42Speaker 1: That's a good point. I think, or maybe we're just
- 33:44Speaker 1: in a phase where there isn't really that, right? And
- 33:47Speaker 1: so that feels like, But you still... You'll still celebrate
- 33:51Speaker 1: July 4th and stuff like that. That's like... Everyone will
- 33:53Speaker 1: celebrate that, right? Some people now are seeing it as
- 33:57Speaker 1: it's like a bad thing, you know? Like... But then
- 34:00Speaker 1: it's not like we... It's like... I turned up to
- 34:03Speaker 1: my first July 4th in a red coat. Did you? Yeah.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Let's go, dude. And a flag. Because I was like...
- 34:09Speaker 1: And the UK flag. We're coming back. Yeah, yeah. Captain Jack?
- 34:13Speaker 1: What is it? Union Jack. Union Jack.
- 34:16Speaker 2: The flags are weird over here as well because I
- 34:17Speaker 2: don't think you can fly... flags unless the.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Football's on yeah yeah yeah yeah if somebody's fine without
- 34:24Speaker 1: the football like oh that guy's yeah he's not doing
- 34:27Speaker 1: as well he's Scottish um and no offense if anybody's
- 34:31Speaker 1: Scottish dude a lot of people are saying it's not
- 34:34Speaker 1: even real it's just a glitch on the map um
- 34:39Speaker 1: but that is I don't know um sometimes your body
- 34:44Speaker 1: feels good but guess what it could feel a little

- 37:16Speaker 2: Did you get to go to the Highlands or anything
- 37:19Speaker 2: or try where they make scotch?
- 37:20Speaker 1: No, we didn't. We didn't get to yet. We didn't
- 37:23Speaker 1: get to do a lot of stuff like that, dude.
- 37:25Speaker 1: Are you a whiskey guy? Uh-uh. I don't drink right now. Really? Yeah,
- 37:29Speaker 1: because I'll buy drugs. Because you... My man. So.
- 37:36Speaker 1: A clue. What's your, what's your drug of choice? Are
- 37:39Speaker 1: you like going mad prescription? No, I think my, I
- 37:43Speaker 1: guess I'm probably more of pretty much a straight cocaine guy.
- 37:47Speaker 1: You know, I would guess. Yeah. I would just, I
- 37:50Speaker 1: would definitely. Oh yeah. I will even, I remember even
- 37:55Speaker 1: when I quit doing drugs, I would still, if my
- 37:58Speaker 1: buddy of mine was doing a line of cocaine, which
- 38:00Speaker 1: I don't recommend to anyone, but I've done it a lot, but,
- 38:05Speaker 1: I would hold the back of his neck while he
- 38:07Speaker 1: did it. Like that's how close I still wanted to
- 38:09Speaker 1: be to the action. And that's very, the back of
- 38:12Speaker 1: your neck is a sentimental place. Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 2: It's also like, that's quite like, I felt if someone
- 38:17Speaker 2: grabbed the back of my neck, I'd be like, what
- 38:18Speaker 2: is about to happen?
- 38:19Speaker 1: Yeah. It feels, but if they cares, we just ride, just,
- 38:22Speaker 1: you know, just ride shot. There's still a bit of
- 38:25Speaker 1: predator in that. I agree. Okay.
- 38:28Speaker 2: A really gentle caress that's even worse the gentle caress
- 38:31Speaker 2: on the back of the neck oh.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Yeah it's very oh my god just the loitering of
- 38:36Speaker 1: the hand is just it's like riding shotgun on a
- 38:38Speaker 1: line of cocaine really in a way and it's yeah
- 38:41Speaker 1: but yeah so obviously I've you know so how long
- 38:44Speaker 1: you been sober for probably about two years right now
- 38:46Speaker 1: congrats man thanks man amazing appreciate I had a couple
- 38:49Speaker 1: years and it's just yeah because I get all squirreled
- 38:53Speaker 1: out you know I'll be in your yard boy you
- 38:56Speaker 1: know what I'm saying I'll be in your fucking yard. Oh, yeah.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I'll be fucking out there.
- 39:00Speaker 2: So now you are the guy with the Red Bull.
- 39:05Speaker 1: Oh, I look like I'm making Bluetooth or something. I start,
- 39:08Speaker 1: you know, getting the jitters. People are like, oh, my God.
- 39:10Speaker 1: That guy's showing up as a router. That guy's not
- 39:17Speaker 1: doing well, you know. So that's kind of the stuff.
- 39:22Speaker 1: What's like a– Since you've had, you've been obviously very
- 39:29Speaker 1: gifted and had a lot of success and worked very hard,
- 39:31Speaker 1: all those things. What are some stuff as that you
- 39:33Speaker 1: kind of wanted to do and you didn't? Cause touring
- 39:36Speaker 1: and stuff takes a lot of time and touring and working.
- 39:38Speaker 1: And it's like when you're in, I've never been to
- 39:40Speaker 1: a water park. in my life. Yeah.
- 39:43Speaker 2: And that's something that I'm like, uh, I'd love to
- 39:46Speaker 2: do at some point, but I've never been ever.
- 39:48Speaker 1: And is it because like a sunshine thing is like a.
- 39:52Speaker 2: No, it's, uh, um, as I said, like I got, I,
- 39:55Speaker 2: I left school before school finished and no, it's not,
- 39:59Speaker 2: that's not, I just, I left, I went to be
- 40:02Speaker 2: a singer. I became a singer. And in that time
- 40:04Speaker 2: I was working just flat out to become a singer.
- 40:07Speaker 2: And then I became a singer and then because I,
- 40:10Speaker 2: people knew who I was, it sort of limited things
- 40:13Speaker 2: that I could do, but I never really did it
- 40:15Speaker 2: in that I was so focused on my career that,
- 40:19Speaker 2: you know, there were TV shows that were like massive
- 40:21Speaker 2: cultural phenomenons at the time in my age group that
- 40:24Speaker 2: I only discovered like five years ago, or like I
- 40:27Speaker 2: didn't watch any football and I didn't pay attention to this.
- 40:29Speaker 2: It was just so I'm going to, I want to
- 40:32Speaker 2: do this. Um, so yeah, there were some things that
- 40:34Speaker 2: I missed out on in that time, one of which
- 40:37Speaker 2: being it's a silly thing, but it's something that I
- 40:40Speaker 2: would love to do.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Oh, you should get a bus full of, I don't
- 40:48Speaker 1: want to say ginger men or whatever, and take them
- 40:52Speaker 1: to a water park. I think it would be, and
- 40:54Speaker 1: I don't know if that's an offensive term. It's not.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Or I think you should get a bus full of-
- 40:58Speaker 1: It's interesting though, isn't it? The ginger thing.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Cause it's like, it is the last bastion of- Racism.
- 41:04Speaker 1: No, not, no, no. It's things that you can make.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Fun of someone uh on a tv show picked up
- 41:10Speaker 2: they put a picture of a ginger cat on and
- 41:12Speaker 2: they were like this cat kind of looks like you
- 41:13Speaker 2: and in my head i was like if there was
- 41:15Speaker 2: someone fat on this couch and you got up a
- 41:17Speaker 2: picture of a fat cat yeah that would be really
- 41:19Speaker 2: offensive so when when does the line start.
- 41:22Speaker 1: It stops just right outside of ginger i think i
- 41:25Speaker 1: think so too apparently well in america it stops you
- 41:27Speaker 1: the only people you still make fun of are like
- 41:29Speaker 1: redneck white people yeah and everybody else is kind of
- 41:33Speaker 1: off limits so it's like you know Yeah. But I've
- 41:37Speaker 1: always supported people that are really pale with red hair. Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Until they come out with an SPF milkshake.
- 41:45Speaker 2: I think you definitely, the amount of sort of fun
- 41:50Speaker 2: that's made out of you as a kid makes for
- 41:52Speaker 2: a good personality.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. I feel like I have more fun than
- 41:56Speaker 1: the pretty kids that I grew up with. Oh, yeah, dude.
- 41:58Speaker 1: My best friend was the good-looking kid, dude.
- 42:02Speaker 3: Caleb.
- 42:03Speaker 1: No, not him. He's pretty good looking too, dude. He
- 42:06Speaker 1: also looks like a really hot woman in some countries, okay?
- 42:11Speaker 1: I'm not going to name them, but a lot of
- 42:13Speaker 1: Slavic areas. He's a nine, female nine, dude. And that's
- 42:21Speaker 1: only if he partially shaves. So, but no, my buddy Scott,
- 42:26Speaker 1: when I was growing up, that's whose wedding I was at.
- 42:28Speaker 1: He was like the handsomest guy, dude. And he's just
- 42:30Speaker 1: got no chat. And he just, he... But no, he
- 42:34Speaker 1: was great. He was just, but yeah, I always had
- 42:35Speaker 1: to be the other guy. Yeah. You know, and. You probably,
- 42:40Speaker 1: you feel like you've aged like a fine wine, right?
- 42:43Speaker 1: I've aged. I've aged. I've aged like a decent provolone,
- 42:50Speaker 1: I think. Yeah. I don't know if I'd say fine wine. Yeah, maybe.
- 42:56Speaker 1: Provolone age? Provolone. I'm sure it ages, huh? Just get moldy, right?
- 43:01Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying you just gotta get tested
- 43:03Speaker 1: every now and then you know what I'm saying keep
- 43:06Speaker 1: your pH balance decent but I was gonna say are
- 43:10Speaker 1: there things you started to do like in your career
- 43:12Speaker 1: that you started like it was another like thing you
- 43:15Speaker 1: wanted to start to learn like learn a language you
- 43:16Speaker 1: know like Joe Rogan told me one day he's like
- 43:19Speaker 1: when I'm done with doing this job I wanna paint
- 43:22Speaker 1: and I never thought I would hear him say I
- 43:24Speaker 1: was like huh.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Yeah Howard Stern paints really, really well. Howard Stern does
- 43:29Speaker 2: like amazing watercolors. You see them and you're like, holy shit, yeah. Dude,
- 43:33Speaker 2: Silence of the Lambs paints, dude.
- 43:35Speaker 1: That guy. What's his name? Anthony Hopkins. Anthony Hopkins, dude.
- 43:40Speaker 1: Bring him up. Oh, wow. He paints well. That's amazing.
- 43:44Speaker 2: Did the lambs stop painting?
- 43:48Speaker 1: I paint as well.
- 43:50Speaker 3: Oh, really?
- 43:50Speaker 1: I didn't know that.
- 43:51Speaker 2: Actually, at the front of the pub, there's a painting
- 43:53Speaker 2: that I did, but it's less, it's more It's more
- 43:56Speaker 2: I just go into a studio with canvases on the
- 43:59Speaker 2: floor and just splash.
- 44:01Speaker 1: Loads of color.
- 44:02Speaker 2: And when it's done, it's done. But that's more like
- 44:04Speaker 2: I started doing that when I finished. I did this
- 44:07Speaker 2: tour that ended in 2019. And when it finished, I
- 44:10Speaker 2: was like, I don't want to do music for like
- 44:11Speaker 2: a month. But also I want to carry on being
- 44:14Speaker 2: creative and do stuff. So I started painting then. I
- 44:16Speaker 2: learned Italian as well. That was like a thing. I
- 44:20Speaker 2: bought a place in Italy and no one speaks English there.
- 44:24Speaker 1: So I was like, I have to learn.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But those are like the two things that if I
- 44:27Speaker 2: wasn't doing music, I'd like to put more time into.
- 44:31Speaker 2: And honestly, like discover, I love movies, discovering new things.
- 44:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Like movies, like different artists, albums. Will you listen
- 44:42Speaker 1: to something or watch something to sometimes put you in
- 44:44Speaker 1: like a mood to like create your own music even
- 44:47Speaker 1: or to write songs?
- 44:48Speaker 2: My creative process is just basically like do it, like
- 44:52Speaker 2: just get in and do it.
- 44:54Speaker 1: And if it's bad- forget about it and move on.
- 44:57Speaker 2: So I've tried to be creative every single day, write
- 45:00Speaker 2: a song every single day or two songs every single
- 45:02Speaker 2: day and not worry about whether it's good or not.
- 45:05Speaker 2: Like not be like, uh, I feel like some people
- 45:09Speaker 2: think that like writer's block is a thing where you're like, Oh,
- 45:13Speaker 2: I can't write songs, but you can write songs.
- 45:14Speaker 1: You just can't write good songs. So just like keep writing,
- 45:17Speaker 1: get the bad ones out.
- 45:18Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 45:19Speaker 2: So shape of you was written on a day and
- 45:21Speaker 2: we wrote four other songs that day that no one's
- 45:23Speaker 2: really heard and shape of you came from out of
- 45:25Speaker 2: that and if i hadn't written the four bad songs
- 45:27Speaker 2: i wouldn't have got the one good song so yeah
- 45:30Speaker 2: just a process of just constantly doing it but i
- 45:31Speaker 2: don't think i've ever really watched the only movie that
- 45:34Speaker 2: i've watched to create something was i did a song
- 45:38Speaker 2: for uh the hobbit and they they showed me the
- 45:40Speaker 2: movie and then they went this is the point where
- 45:43Speaker 2: the song comes in and your song has to convey
- 45:45Speaker 2: this and bring the audience out of the movie and
- 45:48Speaker 2: it is a point where smogs go into the big
- 45:50Speaker 2: um town at the end and he's going to.
- 45:52Speaker 1: Destroy it and cover it in fire and flames and blah, blah, blah.
- 45:56Speaker 2: So they were like, we need you this chaotic bit
- 45:58Speaker 2: and then a calm bit. And you basically taking the
- 46:00Speaker 2: audience out of the cinema. So that was the first
- 46:02Speaker 2: time I've been like inspired by a movie.
- 46:04Speaker 1: I guess. Wow. That's a pretty cool task, huh? Yeah.
- 46:07Speaker 1: Really cool.
- 46:08Speaker 2: And also in that process, you're essentially working in a, uh,
- 46:13Speaker 2: creative medium that you don't really know anything about.
- 46:16Speaker 1: And you're so excited.
- 46:17Speaker 2: Like I was so geeked out to be working with like,
- 46:20Speaker 2: peter and fran and then getting to do the press
- 46:22Speaker 2: tour with all of the actors and stuff and you're
- 46:24Speaker 2: suddenly there in a world that you don't really belong
- 46:26Speaker 2: in but.
- 46:27Speaker 4: It's like it's like the reason musicians are obsessed with
- 46:30Speaker 4: sports players and sports players are obsessed with musicians and
- 46:33Speaker 4: it's because each can do something that the other can't
- 46:35Speaker 4: do but there's still like a level of dedication you
- 46:38Speaker 4: have to do to get to that point and um
- 46:40Speaker 4: i love being on the other side of the coin
- 46:42Speaker 4: i went to my foot like Went to one of
- 46:44Speaker 4: the Celtics games the other day and being like.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Boston Celtics? Yeah. Oh, yeah. You get in free over there,
- 46:49Speaker 1: I'm sure, dude. There's no way. They're like, he made it. Finally, dude.
- 46:55Speaker 1: And no judgment, dude. It's all good, man. If I
- 46:59Speaker 1: show up, yeah. If I show up like at a
- 47:01Speaker 1: remedial reading center, I fucking get in immediately. Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:08Speaker 2: But my point is being on the, watching it, And
- 47:13Speaker 2: I've never really had.
- 47:14Speaker 1: An appreciation for basketball before.
- 47:15Speaker 2: Cause I've never really like, I've been to like a
- 47:17Speaker 2: couple of games, but like something clicked on that game.
- 47:19Speaker 2: And I was like, this is so exciting. And they're
- 47:22Speaker 2: so skilled and it's so fast. And like, what I
- 47:26Speaker 2: loved about it is in, in football, if you're losing
- 47:28Speaker 2: five nil with 10 minutes to go, you've lost. And
- 47:31Speaker 2: in basketball, you could be losing like by 20 or
- 47:34Speaker 2: 30 points with the last two minutes to go.
- 47:36Speaker 1: And it just could go bam, bam, bam, bam, bam.
- 47:38Speaker 1: And then when it's like really exciting. Yeah. Who's your
- 47:41Speaker 1: basketball team? Basketball? I don't know. I don't know, dude. Actually,
- 47:46Speaker 1: I like Kaitlyn Clark's team. I started following her in college,
- 47:49Speaker 1: and I'll watch her highlights and stuff. She plays for
- 47:53Speaker 1: Indiana Fever now, but me and Caleb went to an
- 47:56Speaker 1: Iowa Hawkeyes game where she broke the record, which was
- 47:59Speaker 1: pretty cool, dude. I like Iowa a lot. We were
- 48:02Speaker 1: pretty high. I like Iowa too, man. You know, in Iowa.
- 48:06Speaker 1: I played IndyCar in Iowa. Really? Yeah. And did you
- 48:09Speaker 1: race or no?
- 48:10Speaker 2: No, I was just playing the gig. I waved the flag.
- 48:12Speaker 2: Not very well. But I remember walking.
- 48:15Speaker 1: You bring the Union Jack to that and people will
- 48:17Speaker 1: get a little T.O.ed, I think.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Someone there, as I was walking to stage, someone grabbed
- 48:22Speaker 2: my arm and looked at me dead in the eyes
- 48:23Speaker 2: and was like.
- 48:24Speaker 1: Welcome to God's country, Ed. Oh, my God. I loved it.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 48:30Speaker 1: That sounds like the ghost of high cholesterol. Found you, dude,
- 48:34Speaker 1: like in a Charles Dickens novel or something. Damn, yeah,
- 48:37Speaker 1: I'm trying to think. Oh, yeah, I'm trying to think of, yeah,
- 48:41Speaker 1: have you ever gotten asked to go play for like
- 48:43Speaker 1: a chic or anything over there in like a castle
- 48:46Speaker 1: or anything like that? Where? Like in the desert or anything? No, probably, probably. What?
- 48:56Speaker 2: Yeah, we get private show requests. My thing is like
- 49:00Speaker 2: I never want to feel owned. Like, I don't want
- 49:04Speaker 2: someone to be like, you do this, you do this
- 49:06Speaker 2: because I've paid you this. So like, if I'm ever
- 49:08Speaker 2: going to do a private show, it's usually for like,
- 49:12Speaker 2: it's usually for like a company's end of year party
- 49:15Speaker 2: or something.
- 49:15Speaker 1: And they're just like, just do a show. Right. You
- 49:17Speaker 1: turn up and you play, play the show. But I would.
- 49:20Speaker 2: Feel weird if someone was like, you come and you
- 49:22Speaker 2: sing this song at the time that we tell you
- 49:24Speaker 2: to sing it. And you just, I, I, I like touring.
- 49:27Speaker 2: I like playing shows. So I do my shows. And
- 49:30Speaker 2: if I'm ever going to do a private gig, it's
- 49:31Speaker 2: usually someone just saying, can you just do the show
- 49:34Speaker 2: that you do there?
- 49:34Speaker 1: But in a smaller place is what I would prefer
- 49:36Speaker 1: to do. Right, yeah, not like, yeah, come perform it
- 49:39Speaker 1: in this wet cage at 640 or whatever.
- 49:41Speaker 2: Yeah, come and play a cover of this song that
- 49:45Speaker 2: isn't even your song to my daughter while she eats breakfast.
- 49:49Speaker 1: Like, I'm not, that ain't me. Yeah, that's like kind of,
- 49:52Speaker 1: that's almost a very expensive ASMR, it sounds like, as well.
- 49:57Speaker 1: But one time I got offered to go to this
- 50:01Speaker 1: place in the Middle East somewhere, and it was like
- 50:04Speaker 1: Lula La Jara. Or somewhere, a place you hadn't even
- 50:08Speaker 1: heard of, right, dude? So it could have just been
- 50:09Speaker 1: in New Jersey or whatever. But they were– and it
- 50:12Speaker 1: was like– there was like a chic and you had
- 50:15Speaker 1: to be behind a big plexiglass area. You would come in,
- 50:20Speaker 1: perform there. He would be eating there with like 90
- 50:22Speaker 1: of his girlfriends or whatever. You would perform there.
- 50:25Speaker 2: And then you lie down and he shits on your chest.
- 50:30Speaker 1: There may have been an afters. I didn't know, but
- 50:35Speaker 1: I didn't read the whole pamphlet either, but, um, I
- 50:38Speaker 1: do know that they were allowed to ask a few
- 50:40Speaker 1: questions at the end and then you got to eat,
- 50:42Speaker 1: but you had to stay in this area by yourself
- 50:45Speaker 1: through the plexiglass while they all had a great time.
- 50:47Speaker 1: I didn't go. And what was the, what was the
- 50:49Speaker 1: fee for that? The fee was probably $ 1, 500.
- 50:53Speaker 2: So what is it like? Do you have a private fee?
- 50:56Speaker 2: Like if someone goes, come play a bar mitzvah.
- 50:59Speaker 1: Yeah. You have a fee. Yeah. Now I would have
- 51:01Speaker 1: a fee for sure. Cause it's like, what else do
- 51:03Speaker 1: you want to do with your time? Are you already relaxing?
- 51:05Speaker 1: Are you going to be missing something that's important? Cause
- 51:07Speaker 1: now I have to set up time where I'm relaxing.
- 51:11Speaker 1: It's like, I had to set up time to watch
- 51:12Speaker 1: baby reindeer. I had to put it on my calendar.
- 51:14Speaker 1: Good show. You know, God, it was good. I hope
- 51:17Speaker 1: they do it again. You know, I'd hate to, I
- 51:21Speaker 1: hate for them not to go through it all again,
- 51:23Speaker 1: especially the guy kind of went through a lot. Oh,
- 51:25Speaker 1: as in do like a sequel show? Yeah, or just
- 51:27Speaker 1: both of them. Just figure it out.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Didn't they talk about they are doing a season two
- 51:30Speaker 2: and it's like from the perspective, isn't it like it's
- 51:32Speaker 2: the court case or something like that?
- 51:34Speaker 1: Apparently she's going to get her side of the story. Wow.
- 51:37Speaker 1: I can't wait. Well, good. Good. It's balanced. Oh, yeah.
- 51:40Speaker 1: It's very fair. We need balanced news out there because, yeah,
- 51:44Speaker 1: I love that lady. That's the crazy thing. You almost
- 51:48Speaker 1: start to fall in love with the lady. You didn't think? No. Piers.
- 51:54Speaker 1: The way she was talking to Piers Morgan.
- 51:56Speaker 4: Have you done the Piers Morgan show?
- 51:59Speaker 1: No, he just asked me to do it. You're going
- 52:00Speaker 1: to do it?
- 52:01Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 52:03Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know enough about... It's hard
- 52:06Speaker 1: for me to know what British people are up to,
- 52:08Speaker 1: you know? Like some cultures you can kind of get
- 52:10Speaker 1: a read on them and you're like, what's going on?
- 52:12Speaker 2: I think Britain's very direct. I think he'd ask you
- 52:15Speaker 2: a lot of very direct questions and you wouldn't. But
- 52:17Speaker 2: you don't strike me as the sort of person that like...
- 52:20Speaker 2: needs to navigate direct questions. So I think you'd be fine.
- 52:24Speaker 2: I did his show like 2013 when he was on
- 52:27Speaker 2: CNN and.
- 52:30Speaker 1: I found it a great interview. Yeah? Yeah. You enjoyed it? Yeah.
- 52:33Speaker 2: He's like a research guy and he doesn't like, he
- 52:36Speaker 2: just asks you the questions that I feel like people
- 52:38Speaker 2: would want to hear, I think.
- 52:40Speaker 1: Yeah. A hundred percent, man. Do you feel like you'll
- 52:44Speaker 1: make different music since you have like a family and
- 52:46Speaker 1: stuff now? Does that start to like, I guess it's
- 52:49Speaker 1: kind of a silly question, but it's like.
- 52:51Speaker 2: I made an album that my fans weren't like over
- 52:53Speaker 2: the moon about because I feel like I was in
- 52:55Speaker 2: quite a happy point of my life.
- 52:57Speaker 1: And so the album didn't have much tension. It was just,
- 53:01Speaker 1: I made a record.
- 53:04Speaker 2: But yeah, I feel like my, you know, just because
- 53:07Speaker 2: I'm married with kids doesn't mean that like you don't
- 53:09Speaker 2: have tension in your life. I feel like even more
- 53:11Speaker 2: so there's been things in my life that have happened
- 53:13Speaker 2: over the past two years. So I think the music
- 53:15Speaker 2: that I'm making at the moment is, more like the
- 53:18Speaker 2: music I was making in my early twenties when there
- 53:20Speaker 2: was a lot of tension going on in, in my life.
- 53:23Speaker 2: But you definitely, you go through periods of time, don't you?
- 53:24Speaker 2: I'm sure you go through periods of time where you're like,
- 53:26Speaker 2: things are good.
- 53:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:27Speaker 2: I feel quite settled, quite happy. And then suddenly a
- 53:30Speaker 2: bombshell happens and then you have to, yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 53:32Speaker 2: So I feel like that's for me always creating music.
- 53:36Speaker 2: I can see like back on my albums, there's like
- 53:37Speaker 2: a lineage of, Like, this is where I was at
- 53:40Speaker 2: this point. This is where I was at this point.
- 53:41Speaker 2: And I feel like if all of the albums sounded
- 53:42Speaker 2: the same, it'd be boring. Yeah, you have to evolve
- 53:45Speaker 2: in some sort. And it's good to have, like, this
- 53:47Speaker 2: is the album when I was, like, the album when
- 53:49Speaker 2: I made an album in COVID, quite settled, quite happy.
- 53:52Speaker 1: We had our first child.
- 53:53Speaker 2: And, yeah, I listen to that now, and it's not,
- 53:56Speaker 2: there's no, like, heartbreak songs on it or sad songs.
- 53:59Speaker 1: It's just kind of, it is what it is. Yeah,
- 54:01Speaker 1: because a lot of times it's, like, ripped my fucking
- 54:03Speaker 1: heart out, Eddie. Yeah. Yeah.
- 54:05Speaker 2: I think I'm getting back on this one. I think, uh,
- 54:09Speaker 2: that's what we want, man. But, but this is what
- 54:11Speaker 2: you're saying about taking time off. You have to take
- 54:13Speaker 2: time off to actually live life. Like if I'm on
- 54:15Speaker 2: the road, I think this is another thing why people
- 54:19Speaker 2: who get successful early have their age freeze. Cause when I'm,
- 54:22Speaker 2: I'm on the road, life does just pause. Cause you
- 54:25Speaker 2: like today you wake up, get on a plane, you
- 54:26Speaker 2: fly here, we do an interview. You might go out
- 54:28Speaker 2: for dinner tonight. You go, there's no like actual real,
- 54:30Speaker 2: real life interaction in your, actual personal life being lived
- 54:35Speaker 2: because you're constantly working so you'll go back I always
- 54:38Speaker 2: found this but you'll go back home and you'll press
- 54:40Speaker 2: play on your life again and then you'll be like
- 54:42Speaker 2: holy fuck so much has happened how do I keep
- 54:44Speaker 2: up with this you've your friend who was dating this
- 54:47Speaker 2: person is now not dating this person you've missed that
- 54:49Speaker 2: whole thing your dad might be going through something you've
- 54:51Speaker 2: missed that whole thing like now your brother's doing this.
- 54:53Speaker 1: It is weird that's a really great way to say
- 54:55Speaker 1: it too yeah it's like.
- 54:55Speaker 2: You just put it on pause and you go and
- 54:57Speaker 2: do your thing and you come back and you press
- 54:58Speaker 2: play on you but it's like the whole world has
- 55:00Speaker 2: been right pressing play Yeah.
- 55:03Speaker 1: And I think, I think everybody can even relate to
- 55:05Speaker 1: that too. I mean, going and touring and that kind
- 55:07Speaker 1: of thing is a little separate, different. Cause you kind
- 55:09Speaker 1: of get taken out of your life almost and then
- 55:12Speaker 1: go and then you just drop right back into your life. Okay. Well, like, yeah,
- 55:16Speaker 1: even for me, it's like, well, was I dating somebody?
- 55:18Speaker 1: Oh shit. I never responded. My sister invited me to
- 55:20Speaker 1: this and that thing's over now. And it's like, why?
- 55:23Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Just like, and then you look at old
- 55:25Speaker 1: emails or sometimes like, your thoughts processes will have changed
- 55:28Speaker 1: and things you wanted to do and move forward with.
- 55:31Speaker 1: Three months ago, you're like, ah, that's not the thing
- 55:33Speaker 1: I need now. Some things you're glad you didn't move
- 55:35Speaker 1: forward with. Some things you're like, oh, dang, I missed out. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 55:39Speaker 1: But some of that's kind of fascinating. When I started podcasting,
- 55:42Speaker 1: an online store was one of the furthest things from
- 55:45Speaker 1: my imagination, having a place to sell things or sell
- 55:48Speaker 1: T-shirts or this or that. And it started off, my
- 55:52Speaker 1: buddy Ken was making our T-shirts in his basement. And
- 55:57Speaker 1: things started to grow. And as the business started to grow,
- 56:01Speaker 1: we had to grow. And so did our store. And
- 56:04Speaker 1: that's where Shopify showed up to help. From the launch
- 56:08Speaker 1: your online shop stage to the first real life store stage,
- 56:13Speaker 1: all the way to the did we just hit a

- 56:33Speaker 1: wants are, and I'm thankful for that. You can sign

- 58:11Speaker 1: I'll notice sometimes like I get scared to like see
- 58:14Speaker 1: people in person. Cause I feel like I'm not going
- 58:17Speaker 1: to be able to, um, like live up to whoever
- 58:21Speaker 1: they think I am. Does that make sense? Or is
- 58:23Speaker 1: that like really egotistical thing to think? Do you think?
- 58:25Speaker 2: No, I think especially like the position that you're in
- 58:29Speaker 2: and the kind of like cultural significance of who you
- 58:33Speaker 2: are and what people perceive you to be. I definitely
- 58:36Speaker 2: get that because you might be having an off day
- 58:38Speaker 2: and people are like, Hey, be the guy. And you're like, right,
- 58:40Speaker 2: fuck off. Like, I just want to like chill out. Um,
- 58:43Speaker 2: so yeah, definitely. But I think that my way of
- 58:48Speaker 2: moving through life is always just be like, always be
- 58:51Speaker 2: completely honest of what it is at that point. So
- 58:53Speaker 2: I remember being, I was like, I will usually say
- 58:56Speaker 2: yes to photographs. If I'm with my kids, I'm like, look,
- 58:58Speaker 2: I'm with my kids. I'm trying to be a dad.
- 59:00Speaker 2: But like, sometimes if I'm feeling off, like my, my
- 59:03Speaker 2: aunt died and I was at a train station and
- 59:05Speaker 2: someone was like being really, you know, like a fan
- 59:08Speaker 2: and like, come on.
- 59:09Speaker 1: And I was like, I'm like, my aunt has just died. Please.
- 59:12Speaker 2: I just need a fucking moment. And in, if you
- 59:14Speaker 2: are honest like that, people get it. Like no one's,
- 59:17Speaker 2: but if I'd have just been like, fuck off, like
- 59:18Speaker 2: suddenly it's a thing. But I think honesty throughout, this
- 59:21Speaker 2: is what I was saying earlier about just like saying
- 59:24Speaker 2: truthful things when they come into your brain.
- 59:26Speaker 1: It's people get, people appreciate honesty. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 59:32Speaker 1: And maybe they can feel it too. That's always the
- 59:34Speaker 1: thing I think that gets weird as you get older.
- 59:35Speaker 1: If you even think about telling a lie, sometimes even
- 59:38Speaker 1: a small lie, I'm like, it just feels like.
- 59:41Speaker 2: It's... The lies, if you tell lots of small lies,
- 59:44Speaker 2: then you then have to keep up on like, who
- 59:47Speaker 2: did I say this to?
- 59:47Speaker 1: And who did I do this? So that's, if you
- 59:49Speaker 1: go through life and you're just... Who did I tell
- 59:51Speaker 1: I was a mime? And then you're fucking.
- 59:54Speaker 1: Everybody you meet you're.
- 59:55Speaker 2: Like now that's it that that should be that should
- 59:58Speaker 2: be something that in your spare time when you're trained
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: to train you to do something joe's gonna be an
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: artist you should train to be a mime i would
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: love to see you be a mime fully painted just
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: be fucking great.
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: And they're always stuck in the smallest apartment it's like
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: first of all get a better job you know and
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: fucking get out of that rat trap That's what I
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: always think about those guys. But that's a lost art,
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: isn't it? Miming.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: What else is a lost art? Dude, there used to
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: be a lot of mimes, Ed. Yeah. Pull that up, dude.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: How many mimes were there probably in 2010? Or 2005?
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: Let's fucking go back since we have access to all
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: this online. And mimes were some of the first mixed
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: people as well. Nobody wanted to. And I see it
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: like that. And I'm sure there's much records of mimes. Yeah,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: it's quite a niche subject, Theo. It's quite like, this
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: is another thing. When you are trained to be a mime,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: you've got to make the mime archives. Because then we
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: can rely on you. When we Google, we're like, Theo's
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: got us. Isn't it? It's kind of perfect, dude. Niche. Yeah, wild.
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: First of all, I'll say this about mimes. They're lazy, dude.
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: I'll straight up say that right now bro and mimes
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: well magicians are comedians arch nemesis right and that's been
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: since like the beginning of time dude but I'll say
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: this also mimes can suck it I'll go ahead and
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: say that right now bro if you're a mime dude.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Bring it bro I think the day that you learn
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: to be a mime you'll actually learn a bit of
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: appreciation for it you'll be like actually this is way
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: harder than I thought and then you'll be making you
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: make the mime archive.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: That can be your side hustle. There should be. Who
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: was the most famous mom? Oh, well, there was Charlie Chaplin,
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: wasn't there? He's British. Marcel Marceau. Marcel Marceau. Was he British? No,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: I think he's French. Yeah, sure. I'm sure the Brits
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: commandeered him. I'm sure they put a flag on his
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: back at some point and said he was British. Biff
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: the Clown, his name was. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Who, Marcel Marceau? Yeah.
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: Let me look a little bit about him. Marcel Marceau.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: Can you zoom in on that so I can read
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: that there, brother? You go up to the top. Marcel Marceau,
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: 22nd of March, he was born. Oh, he lived for
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: a long time. 2007, was a French mime artist, actor,
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: most famous for his stage persona, Bip the Clown. He
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: referred to mime as the art of silence. You know, Mr.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: Bean was kind of like that, wasn't he, to be honest?
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Mr.
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: Bean, I think... It's fascinating. Well, it's fascinating because he.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: essentially every country understands Mr. Bean because there's no talking
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: in it. I heard a rumor that he, when he
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: did the show, got them to agree to never show
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: it in Italy because he liked holidaying in Italy. So
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: that's the one place that, I think they had the movie,
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: but they didn't have the TV show.
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: So it wasn't just constant. So you wouldn't remember him
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: as much. Did you ever get to meet him? There
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: was a period of, he was going to be in
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: a music video for a bit.
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: So we were actually in touch on email and it was,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: I think the idea I had was very vague. And
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: I think that was the problem. It wasn't like, this
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: is what it is. This is when it's happening. And
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: it was basically, I was kind of like, would you
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: be interested in this?
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: It might be this.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: And he was just like, it needs to be more
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: solid than that. But we had a good exchange. The
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: guy who I did, did you watch the movie yesterday?
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Yesterday?
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Yesterday.
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: No.
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: No.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: Anyway, the guy that made that movie, I'm in the movie.
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: I play myself in the movie. But the guy that
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: made that movie, he wrote Notting Hill and Love Actually
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: and Four Weddings and The Funeral.
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: He wrote Mr. Bean. So he's very close with... He wrote...
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: So that was a... It wasn't just that guy made
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: it up?
- 1:03:52Speaker 2: No. Well, they did it together, I think. I think
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: it was a stage show to begin with. So they
- 1:03:57Speaker 2: did a show called Blackadder, which was... I think it's
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: the best British comedy ever. Blackadder?
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: Blackadder.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: And it's set in, it's the same characters, but set
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: in different periods of time. So there would be some
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: where they're in the, is it the Tudor time? And
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: then there's one in the Georgian time. There's one in
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: World War.
- 1:04:19Speaker 1: Black Adder. One. Oh, Mr. Bean's in it. Yeah, he's
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: the main guy. So they did that first. And then
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: they did Mr. Bean.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: I need to go back and watch this then. Black
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: Adder is like an all-time classic.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: Really, really good.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: I watched, they do a Christmas Carol and that's my
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: like Christmas routine as I always watch Blackadder Christmas Carol.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Oh yeah. Yeah. I watch Family Man. Have you seen that?
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: With Nicolas Cage? Cool. You and the wife should watch
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: it this year, man.
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: I've got a massive cardboard cast out of Nicolas Cage
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: in my house.
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Really? Oh, then you'll love it. You should put it up.
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: I watched Mandy and was just like, I'm sold. I
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: gotta have some of that. Have you seen Mandy? It's
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: fucking bonkers.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: Can you pull up the scene, um, of him just
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: type in uh nicholas cage mandy toilet scene.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Mr bean what a great man i wonder if his
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: children are loud and he's like oh this isn't what
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: i wanted right yeah oh Wow. It's a great movie. Yeah. God,
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: that alone, that even just that much of a moment
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: of something that feels so real, that is our political
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: system right now in America. Somebody said that you used
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: to do like open, go to comedy mics. Did you ever?
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Uh, not for me to do comedy, but I used
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: to do it to actually, no, I did actually, I did. I, um,
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: I used to, uh, play with this, um, they were
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: an improvisational rap group called the band, a man. And
- 1:06:08Speaker 2: he was a comedian who rapped and made, uh, he
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: basically would be like, they had a song called what's
- 1:06:13Speaker 2: in your pocket. And he would rap about what was
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: in everyone's pockets and make it funny. So I played
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: with them for a bit, but no, for me, it
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: was more, um, the scene that I was a part
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: of was very cliquey and very like the cool kids
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: over here. And I was always part of the misfits and, uh,
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: you would go and play these gigs where everyone on
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: the lineup would have an acoustic guitar and they'd all
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: be singing love songs. And I'd just be another one
- 1:06:36Speaker 2: of them. Just not as good. I wasn't, I was 17,
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: not 25. I had, my songs were very like rudimentary
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: and like not great. And I saw, uh, I found
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: like this guy, actually my, my, uh, best mate Jamal,
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: ran a, uh, a YouTube channel that was primarily rap.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: And he put me on that channel.
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: And then suddenly there was a whole, uh, a group
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: of people that were like, Oh, we actually quite like
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: this acoustic music. So I would turn up at, uh,
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: hip hop nights first and grime nights and soul nights. And,
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: and I would play and I would get a better
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: reaction because it was just different. It was something that
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: would stand out. Whereas I did not stand out in the,
- 1:07:13Speaker 2: acoustic scene because it was just the same as everyone else.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: And so, and then I started playing comedy nights, comedy nights,
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: poetry nights.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: I would turn up at different things.
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: I used to get roasted whilst the toughest gig I ever,
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: ever played. It was an all black comedy night in, um,
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: central London called the Sunday show.
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: And I was booked for this show.
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: And as I was setting up my guitar, the guy
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: on stage was roasting me being like, what the fuck
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: is this white kid doing with this tiny guitar and blah, blah, blah.
- 1:07:41Speaker 2: And it was probably one of the best gigs of
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: my life. I got on stage. I instantly went into
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: a rap tune. I dropped this song and this song
- 1:07:51Speaker 2: and this song. And the reaction was better than anywhere
- 1:07:54Speaker 2: because I think people were expecting me to fail.
- 1:07:56Speaker 1: And because I didn't, it was even better.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: And those, I think that is what gave me my
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: first bit of success, my first buzz.
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: The buzz within... uh, the kind.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Of grime and rap community in, in the, the UK,
- 1:08:13Speaker 2: I think that was the first place I felt welcomed
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: and accepted and celebrated and still, and still is like,
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: I still feel more love and appreciation from the misfits.
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: No, from the, from the grime and rap community.
- 1:08:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: In, in the UK. Interesting. Yeah. You know, that's such
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: a good idea, dude, like to take whatever your thing
- 1:08:35Speaker 1: is and put it into, uh, go to the space
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: that's different because then you're the different thing. It wasn't,
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: to be honest, it wasn't like an idea. It wasn't
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: like a light bulb moment where I was like, but
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: even when you say it though, it makes me think like, that's,
- 1:08:46Speaker 1: it really is like, there's no way you can't help
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: but stand out. Right.
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: So like, I think it has to happen organically though.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: Cause I feel like if Jamal hadn't put me on
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: his channel and he put me on his channel, the
- 1:08:56Speaker 2: Sunday show booked me for their comedy night.
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: I did that.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: And then whilst at the comedy night, it was a
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: organic thing i think had i just turned up at
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: the sunday show they'd be like.
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: Yeah and maybe it wouldn't have gone the same way
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: right oh that's a good point that's a good point
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: but you have to change up the environment that you're
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: in and really challenge yourself that's pretty brave Yeah, I
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: used to do some black shows, like predominantly black shows
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: in the States, dude. It was hard sometimes. But when you.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Killed it, you killed it. Oh, you killed it, dude. Yeah,
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: and people would stop eating. But I bet it's either
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: like you kill it or you bomb.
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: There's no in between. There's no like all right shows.
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: And when you don't do good in front of a
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: black audience as a white guy, you feel the pain
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: of hundreds of years. You feel, I mean, my pain
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: traveled all the way back to England in a boat.
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: And then got off and experienced more pain. I was like,
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: how much pain is inside of me? Dude, I remember
- 1:09:55Speaker 1: tears coming out of like the inside of my throat.
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: And I was like, I didn't know I had tear
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: ducts in my fucking... Is that the worst that you've bumped? No,
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I've fucking bumped pretty good over the years, Eddie. I... Yeah,
- 1:10:09Speaker 1: I've had some bad ones. I've had one where you
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: came out. It was like the battle of the bands
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: at a school. You had to come out between all
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: the bands. They didn't know. They just thought you had
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: to come out in the beginning. They booed me off stage.
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: They don't have to go out six more times, dude. Wow.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: And every time, it just fucking hurt so bad. My
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: eyebrows started to erupt. But one time, I was so shocked.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: One of my fucking eyebrows fell out of my head
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: from- Like it's cold. So what makes you appreciate it though?
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: I feel like anyone that has had success on stage
- 1:10:44Speaker 2: has had to have been booed, have things chucked at them,
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: have moments where.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: The shock, the trauma. Some girls like something on your
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: shirt and it was my fucking eyebrow, dude. I was like,
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: oh shit. That's bad. Yeah. So that kind of stuff
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: to not be able to protect your tear ducts from
- 1:11:03Speaker 1: the wind just because you had a bad set, dude.
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: That's the kind of shit that people do. that we
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: do not need to be going through. Um, yeah, I
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: think sometimes the tough parts are like, sometimes I'll drift
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: out of what I'm actually doing when I'm on stage.
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: I don't even know what it is. It's not like
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I'm daydreaming, but sometimes you'll just, I don't know. I'll
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: kind of go on autopilot. Not cause I want to,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: it just sort of happens and you have to drop
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: back in. You know, I do that sometimes I did that.
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: I do it quite regularly on perfect. Cause it's just,
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: cause I'm not having to think about what I'm doing with, with,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: with my feet. And occasionally I just drop the second
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: verse by accident and I just kind of come to,
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: and I'm like, Oh, I've just, just not sung the
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: second verse.
- 1:11:42Speaker 2: And the song's now like minute and a half long,
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: but you do, you get in a, there's certain things.
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: I'm sure there's certain routines that you just know so
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: well that your mind just sort of wanders.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Yeah. And then how do you make them feel new
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: and a surprise yourself too?
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: Yeah. And I think it's good every now and then
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: to completely rip up the rule book of what your
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: performance is and just as well.
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a good point. Um, do you, uh, did,
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: was being a father something that really kind of like
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: people talk about it all the time that it does
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: so much for him? Was it as much of a
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: surprise for you? It seemed like you had a lot
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: of love in your life with your spouse. So it
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: wasn't like a.
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's, you just, you selfishness ceases to exist,
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: I think, because suddenly all your decisions are made based on,
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: I've got two daughters now and it's made based on
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: what's best for them, you know, rather than what's best
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: for me or what's best for my wife. And that
- 1:12:32Speaker 2: sort of simplifies life in a way because there's not
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: as many questions. It's just like, well, what's right for
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: these guys?
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: And then cool, done.
- 1:12:40Speaker 2: But yeah, I think, you know, I was a real
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: party boy, like real, like I loved.
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: Getting on it. Oh, yeah. In all aspects. Break out
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: the gear.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: I think probably like five years ago, me and you
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: would have had a lot of fun together.
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: But I think having kids... really really dialed that down
- 1:12:59Speaker 2: I stopped I stopped drinking spirits I stopped like smoking
- 1:13:02Speaker 2: and doing all these you know having wild nights like
- 1:13:07Speaker 2: I don't think I've seen the sunrise since having kids
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: but obviously you're sober when you see the sunrise with
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: with kids but I don't you know I go to
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: bed at like midnight now even if I'm having I
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: drink wine and I drink like one or two beers
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: um and that's my Vice, I guess.
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: We have to be a proper parent. You have to
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: be a parent. You have to be a leader or whatever.
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: You have to, or you have to feed this when
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: it wakes up.
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: You know, I think, um, it's like being in college,
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: I bet with like a roommate that can't cook or whatever.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: And you're like, do you know, do you know what
- 1:13:39Speaker 1: I see it as?
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: It's your drunk mate at college that you need to
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: get home from the bar and you're feeding them bread
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: constantly and water. It's kind of that. And they sort
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: of fall asleep. It's kind of like that. You sort
- 1:13:53Speaker 2: of waken them up to like feeding bread and stuff
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: like that. And then they sort of fall asleep in
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: their chair. It's kind of like that.
- 1:13:57Speaker 1: Dude, one time I got in a taxi to leave
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: a bar when I was in Charleston. I used to
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: live in Charleston. And I forgot to, I guess I
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: was drunk. I just passed out. The guy drove around, dude.
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: He drove like $ 190 worth. I finally fucking wake up, dude.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: He's just driving, bro. And we're like still like about
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: 12 minutes from my house. So I get home. I
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: owed him like $ 220, dude. It took me like two
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: weeks to pay that guy. Jesus. God, man. Just things
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: like that that I just don't miss about. Sometimes just
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: being wasted, dude, or hiding out in somebody's yard.
- 1:14:31Speaker 2: Do you find you have better conversations now? Like, if
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: you're having a conversation with your mate and you're sober,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: it's more like.
- 1:14:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I find I don't waste time in bullshit. Like,
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: I'm not out at one, you know, like in the
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: wee hour. But shit doesn't get as weird either. You're not,
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: you know.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: I feel like, I say it in one of my songs,
- 1:14:49Speaker 2: but I feel like past 2 a.m., it's... like nothing's happening.
- 1:14:53Speaker 2: You're like all sitting around a screen watching YouTube videos
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: and like chatting about the YouTube videos. Whereas I think like,
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: I feel like my friends call me the sparkler because
- 1:15:03Speaker 2: I shine bright for a very short period of time.
- 1:15:06Speaker 2: So I'll go out at eight and I'll be home
- 1:15:07Speaker 2: at 11. But in those three hours, like I'll have fun.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, that's a good guy to be. Yeah. I'm
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: going to start working on that. I'm going to save
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: up all my good stuff for eight to 11. Eight
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: to 11 is a great, time as well. And then
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: you're in bed by midnight.
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: I usually get up at like 5am and anyway, so
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: you're like in bed by midnight and then you're fresh
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: ish in the morning.
- 1:15:30Speaker 1: You're a workout guy. Yeah. I like to work out, man.
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: It's fun. Nothing too crazy, but I do like it.
- 1:15:34Speaker 1: But like every morning you'll do a bit of exercise. Yeah.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Four days a week. I'll work out pretty swell. I
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: like doing the sauna. Yeah. Yeah. Ice bath. And I
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: like doing the ice bath, man. I don't know if
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: they work or not, but They tricked me into believing
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: they do.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: For me, it's less, I like, I don't mind if
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: they work or not, but it gets my core body
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: temperature down.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: I'm a big sweater. Are you really? Yeah, yeah. I sweat. Like,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: if I'm on stage, I just drip, drip, drip. You're
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: just leaking, huh?
- 1:16:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: Well, I think it's because, I think there's something in
- 1:16:03Speaker 2: the Irish blood where heat just does not agree with me,
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: you know?
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: Because you brought your own heat. Of course, a son
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: would be like, who the fuck is this? You know
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: what I'm saying? Stepping on my turf right here.
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: But if I go in a sauna, I'll usually be
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: sweating for like three, four hours after. So getting in
- 1:16:25Speaker 2: an ice bath almost, it's kind of like cauterizing a wound.
- 1:16:29Speaker 2: You just, it's done.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I like, dude, Ireland was so, I never had seen,
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: I did, I grew up in New Orleans, right? In
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: that area, in Louisiana, like Mardi Gras, people being drunk, right?
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: I never say it. It's a different thing of drunkenness.
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: It's just in the, it's like people, we went into
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: a bar, it's people in there. There's no furniture, right?
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: Just people holding each other up. I think drinking, it's like,
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: you can't even let the guy stop. They won't fucking let,
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: I remember we're in the bar outside of the bar.
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: They built another bar around the exit door. You open
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: the exit to the bar. You're in another fucking bar, dude.
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: But drinking culture here is different than, um, uh, America.
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: Like we would like, I found when I lived in Nashville,
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: it was like sports bars. You go to a sports bar, uh,
- 1:17:18Speaker 2: to watch a game to drink. And you would see
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: people there on their own drinking a huge vodka tonic.
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: Just like, I'm here to get fucking drunk. There's Irish
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: bars on the motorway in America. I'm like, who the
- 1:17:29Speaker 2: fuck is driving to an Irish bar? But so, but here,
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: if I'm like, for instance, I saw my best mate
- 1:17:37Speaker 2: Nick yesterday and I was like, Oh, let's go out
- 1:17:39Speaker 2: for a couple of pints. And we would go out
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: and we caught up and we had three pints of beer.
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: And then that was it.
- 1:17:45Speaker 2: And that It's our culture here is very much built around,
- 1:17:50Speaker 2: you know, I'm generalizing. Not everyone loves drinking, but I
- 1:17:54Speaker 2: would say like 80% of the people.
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: In England love a beer every now and then.
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: And you would go out and instead of getting shit
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: canned every time you go out, you know, like I
- 1:18:02Speaker 2: would go to these sports bars and it would basically
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: be like everyone in the sports bar in America would
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: be going with the sole purpose to be dribbly drunk
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: by the end of the night, taken home in an Uber.
- 1:18:12Speaker 2: Whereas in England, it's very much, And Ireland and Scotland
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: and Wales. It's a regular, with my friendship group anyway,
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: a regular thing to have maybe like one or two
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: pints at the end of a work day. And then
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: maybe on a Friday you'll have like six pints and
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: a bottle of wine. You'll go out and do the
- 1:18:30Speaker 2: shots and blah, blah, blah. But it's far more just
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: part of the culture to do it regularly.
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it seems like they wear it better here.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: It's not alcoholism to drink every day here. Whereas in America,
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: if you drunk every day, it'd be alcoholism. Because obviously
- 1:18:48Speaker 2: people take it too far here as well, but- the
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: general thing I think is, am I right in saying that, lads?
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: Like you would go out for a couple of pints
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: after this and it wouldn't be like. Well, I think
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: we treat every event with beer. Are you sad?
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: Have a beer. Are you happy? Have a beer. Is
- 1:19:02Speaker 1: it a wedding? Have a beer. Is it a funeral?
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: Have a beer. Yeah.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: Everything but it's not alcoholism it's the culture it's just
- 1:19:09Speaker 2: the culture it's not like i wake up every morning
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: and i'm like i need a beer tonight it's like
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: you get to the end of the day and your
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: mate will be like oh i'm in central london do
- 1:19:17Speaker 2: you want to go for a beer rather than like
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: i need a beer it just right yeah.
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: Yeah that's interesting dude because a lot like by by
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: the definition of alcoholism i mean everybody can decide for
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: himself if they're an alcoholic that's one thing i know
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: about that program like You have to decide like there
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: can be like the rules that kind of help you decide,
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: but it's a personal decision. Right. But yeah, people would
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: look at a lot of people in Ireland and be like, oh, everybody,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: everybody here is now calling nine out of 10 people.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: Even some people in comas or whatever drinking, you're like,
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: that's new. Um, but yeah, but like, but it's not
- 1:19:55Speaker 1: the same because I think it's a misconception. Oh, I agree. I,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: when you say that, it's like.
- 1:19:59Speaker 2: Cause I don't, I actually don't like the, uh, the
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: culture of like people viewing Ireland as like an alcoholic country.
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: It's like, it's not it.
- 1:20:09Speaker 2: They, they, you know, we can have a good time.
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: But it's not like, I don't know. It's the same
- 1:20:17Speaker 2: in England. Like, it's just the culture.
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree. But they're good. Germany's the same. It
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: surprises me how good at it they are. I think
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: that's what surprised me. Just that, like, wow.
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: But also, we drink from a very young age, irresponsibly
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: or responsibly.
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: But, like, I had my first beer when I was, like, 12, 13.
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: And you learn how to....
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: Manage your alcohol by the age of 16. You know,
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: if I drink this many cans of Strongbow, I'm probably
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: going to throw up. So I'll drink this many cans
- 1:20:48Speaker 2: of Strongbow. Whereas I think in America, it's very much
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: like 17, 18, 19. Maybe it's even just getting to
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: college for the first time where you're then finding out
- 1:20:55Speaker 2: what your boundaries are.
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: France, they start drinking wine from like five. Oh God.
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: They give tiny glass of wine to their kids and
- 1:21:03Speaker 2: it makes them respect alcohol by.
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: I'd watch that online if they had that. To be honest,
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: no judgment or anything, and I don't know any of
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: the children, and I wouldn't want to know any of them,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: but I would watch them drink a little bit of wine,
- 1:21:21Speaker 1: especially you can't do anything bad to the screen or whatever.
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: There's a YouTube video.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I actually wanted to do it for one of my songs, Bloodstream,
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: was to have a video of compilations of babies trying lemons.
- 1:21:32Speaker 2: Get up, get up, babies trying lemons for the first time.
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: Here we go. This is so good. Whoa, he couldn't
- 1:21:55Speaker 1: handle it. Anyway, we're good, we're good, we're good. Oh,
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: that's remarkable. Do you think about like what else you
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: want to do in life? Yeah, just like, yeah. Do
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: you start thinking about like, oh, what's something new you
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: want to do? Getting to do that movie thing sounded
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: really cool to me.
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: I'm going to segue into, I've been doing probably for
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: the last, seven years stuff with music in high schools
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: because the in my area so basically when i in
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: like 2017 2018 my old music teacher came to me
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: and he was like look the god the government is
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: currently in charge do not value art at all like
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: arts drama music and they cut all the funding for
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: comprehensive oh my god so my music teacher came to
- 1:22:43Speaker 2: me and he was like look we're going I think
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: they had to share like between art, music and drama,
- 1:22:46Speaker 2: like 700 pounds per year, like for all three subjects.
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: So I started funding that at my local high school.
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: And then you see a like massive uptick in like
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: kids doing production, kids doing songwriting, kids doing this. So
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: then I just started keep putting it. I built a
- 1:23:02Speaker 2: recording studio there. There's like loads of like proper instruments
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: that aren't broken. And you just see the school getting
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: better at music. So then I started doing that in
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: the county that I'm from. And we've just now changed
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: it to do it nationwide. And I'm now visiting more
- 1:23:21Speaker 2: high schools and places that really need music funding. And
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: you see what a difference it makes too. Because I'm
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: not an academic person. And in the real world, I
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: would be viewed as stupid. But I excelled at music.
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: And therefore, people think that I'm good at something. And
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: so I found it massively helpful to be in a
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: state-funded school that really encouraged that and they've basically cut
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: funding in England for it so I'm doing what I
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: can to get funding for it but I think getting
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: the the new government will be better at it I
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: think but the the thing that like that's kind of
- 1:24:01Speaker 2: what I want to segue into is music education because
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: it worked so well for me and I know it
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: can work so well for other kids I'm kind of
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: like proof that normal kids can just pick up guitars
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: work hard and And our country as well, like what
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: we're famous for is our art. We're famous for music.
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: We're the Beatles. We're famous for painting. Damien Hirst. We're
- 1:24:23Speaker 2: famous for movies. You've got like Danny Boyle coming out
- 1:24:25Speaker 2: of here, Christopher Nolan. And the government is just putting
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: importance on maths and banking. And, you know, we make arms,
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: but no one is, no one is proud that we
- 1:24:37Speaker 2: make arms and no one is proud that our banking
- 1:24:40Speaker 2: is really good, but they are proud of our art.
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: And so for, a government to be like, the art
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: doesn't matter. Like, where do you think the art's going
- 1:24:47Speaker 2: to come from? So I think that, that for me
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: is the next part of my career is getting a proper, proper,
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: proper funding in art, music, drama, back into schools. And actually,
- 1:24:59Speaker 2: Ireland do a very good job of it. Ireland are very,
- 1:25:01Speaker 2: very pro their arts because they know that that's their
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: cultural currency. You know, you too travel the world and they,
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: and they see that Banshees of Innishirin comes out, everyone
- 1:25:10Speaker 2: goes to watch that movie. And, um, They're, they, Ireland
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: are very, very good at recognizing that and funding. There's
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: lots of, uh, Irish, uh, because people travel around the
- 1:25:21Speaker 2: world as Irish. superstars in all aspects and they spread
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: people are like oh Ireland's awesome because so and so
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: comes from Ireland so and so comes from Ireland and
- 1:25:31Speaker 2: it's the same in England like British music there's Adele
- 1:25:34Speaker 2: there's Harry Styles there's Stormzy there's me there's like musicians
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: travel the world and we people are like oh that's
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: a British musician or that's a British artist or a
- 1:25:43Speaker 2: British actor or actress and that's what we as a
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: country are proud of we're proud of our football as
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: well but in terms of like art Um, and it's
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: so weird that no importance is being put on it.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: It's not even that the importance isn't being put on it.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: It's like completely stripping the importance of it and just
- 1:26:01Speaker 2: being like, this doesn't matter. I'm sorry to get all. No,
- 1:26:04Speaker 2: but when you, when you kill that in a culture, it's,
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: it's horrible, man. Even like you said, like when you
- 1:26:09Speaker 2: said earlier about like going to that NBA game, right?
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: You don't realize till you sit there at the front
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: row or until you get close to something, how important
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: it is or what are you, if you could even
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: be good at it. Like I remember stand-up comedy, I'd
- 1:26:21Speaker 2: seen it, like videos people had, like DVDs would get
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: passed around the neighborhood of like Chris Rock and stuff
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: And I'm like, oh, this is cool. But until I
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: was in college and actually went to a show, not then,
- 1:26:33Speaker 1: until that moment, did it hit me like- This is
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: what I could do, yeah. That this is even a
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: thing that you could do. Like just seeing it on
- 1:26:40Speaker 1: a screen, it just didn't really tabulate. Am I right
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: to assume that in school you would probably be like,
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: I don't know what I want to do. What am
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: I good at? I'm not very good at history. I'm
- 1:26:50Speaker 1: not very good at English. I'm not very good at this.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: And then suddenly you find comedy and you go, this
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: is something that I can really excel in. And I
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: think unless you give kids that opportunity, and also I
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: feel like you can destroy a kid's confidence at age
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: 12 by just being like, yeah, you're not.
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: Very good at that.
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: And if you give a kid, I was given confidence
- 1:27:11Speaker 2: by my, my music teacher, by my dad, by my friends.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: When I wasn't very good at all. I listened back
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: to the music that I was making when I was
- 1:27:18Speaker 2: like 14. My friends were nice.
- 1:27:19Speaker 1: Yeah. I listened back and I go, I go, fucking hell.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: My dad was not honest because he was just like,
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: this is great. And my confidence was built. And it's
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: got to a point where I then was like, I'm
- 1:27:30Speaker 2: going to release my first single and I'm going to
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: make a music video.
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: And then that was the song that got successful.
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: And had I been like, I think that's also like
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: changing the culture of that, of like, like I went
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: up to Sheffield the other day to do a couple
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: of school and music course visits. And they were amazing,
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: like way better than I was at, at, at 14.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: And I feel like all it takes is for someone
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: to be like, you're really, really good at this. And
- 1:27:58Speaker 2: then they go, Oh, well then I should, I should
- 1:28:00Speaker 2: carry it on.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Yeah. And, um, well having the equipment, like you're saying,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: like putting that equipment in their schools, dude, that's so cool. Because, um,
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: If you have a camera and you have like a
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: podcast set up or something, you can record something and
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: you can do anything. The second you do that one step,
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: now you're in a whole new purview or whatever. Yeah.
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: And then you're like, now what's possible. It's like, but
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: until you can get that first step. You do your
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: first show and you go, right, well, I've done one.
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: It wasn't that good. I'll go and do it again.
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: I'll make it better. And then it just improves. And
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: you don't know what part of you wants to do
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: until you like, it's almost like a metal detector. You're
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: like a metal detector. And until you kind of go
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: over that little, whatever that is, in the, in something
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: inside of you kind of goes off, you know?
- 1:28:42Speaker 2: Well, cause all you need to do that, that's the
- 1:28:44Speaker 2: thing as well that I say to kids, I'm like,
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: you only need one thing that you're good at. You
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: just find the one thing that you enjoy that you're
- 1:28:49Speaker 2: good at and you just work really hard at that.
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: And then it will work.
- 1:28:53Speaker 2: You go like the music industry is, is if you
- 1:28:56Speaker 2: want to work in the music industry, you can. Like
- 1:28:59Speaker 2: I was, the day that I made it in my
- 1:29:02Speaker 2: mind was I was gigging around, gigging around, not getting paid.
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: I got booked for a wedding and I played this
- 1:29:07Speaker 2: wedding for like 200 pounds. And I remember getting that
- 1:29:11Speaker 2: 200 pounds cash and being like, oh my God, this
- 1:29:13Speaker 2: is half my rent for playing a gig.
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: Looks like we made it. Exactly.
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: And in my mind then I was like, I could
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: just play weddings for the rest of my life and
- 1:29:22Speaker 2: I'm fine.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: I can do music.
- 1:29:23Speaker 2: And it's about finding people the you know me getting
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: 200 pounds for playing covers at a wedding isn't me
- 1:29:29Speaker 2: playing Wembley Stadium and making my albums and stuff like
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: that so it's not necessarily the dream but it is
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: doing music as a career so you can find if
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: you said tomorrow like right I want to be a
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: chocolate taster and I'm going to be the best fucking
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: chocolate taster you could potentially make that a career if
- 1:29:47Speaker 2: you just worked harder than other chocolate tasters or gamer
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: or I don't know.
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: Especially in the UK Willy Wonka's from here He is, right?
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: Did you ever meet him? Willy Wonka? No. Did I meet?
- 1:30:03Speaker 2: I think I might have met Timothee Chalamet. Somebody must have,
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: I'm sure. I'm sure someone's met him eventually, yeah.
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: Fuck, lucky. That's the kind of people that you, some
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: people you don't get to meet. You know, some people
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: the government hides them. What about the queen or anything?
- 1:30:22Speaker 1: Can you text her or whatever? Oh, she's dead. Oh,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: the new queen. Oh, is there a new one? I
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: didn't even know. Did they get a new one? Sorry.
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: I didn't know. And I'm sorry that she's deceased too.
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: I did not know that.
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: Yeah, she died in 2022. Oh, yeah. And then King
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: Charles is now the king. I did like her Jubilee.
- 1:30:41Speaker 2: I played her gig and there's an amazing picture of
- 1:30:43Speaker 2: her shaking my hand and smiling. And people are like, oh,
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: she was pleased to meet you. And actually a comedian
- 1:30:50Speaker 2: had just told her a joke. So it looks like
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: she's really happy to meet me, but she had no
- 1:30:54Speaker 2: idea who I was.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: That's all. But the picture says a thousand words. There
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: you go. Yeah. Do you do queen do the Royal people?
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: What are they do? What is it really like over
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: there when you go over there?
- 1:31:05Speaker 2: I don't think it's, I don't envy it at all.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: I wouldn't want to live that lifestyle. I remember being
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: in Japan once for the rugby world cup and I
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: met one of them and he was like, you know,
- 1:31:19Speaker 2: he's six, seven years older than me. And he was like,
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: this is my first time in Japan. And in my mind,
- 1:31:23Speaker 2: I'm like, I would have just assumed that you go
- 1:31:26Speaker 2: everywhere all the time. But I think it's very much
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: like it's a working job. They go and open hospitals,
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: open care centers, go and do this, go and do this.
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: And I wouldn't envy the lifestyle at all. I think
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: it is quite restrictive. I don't think you can just
- 1:31:39Speaker 2: be like, I'm going to go do this. I think like,
- 1:31:41Speaker 2: have you seen The Crown, the show? Because like even
- 1:31:44Speaker 2: when they go on holiday, they go on holiday and
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: they have to do like a press shoot. before the holiday.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: And then people just take photos of them for the
- 1:31:51Speaker 2: whole holiday. Cause it's kind of like you allow, because
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: you are funded by the public, the public own your life.
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:31:59Speaker 2: So it's not something that I would necessarily envy. It's
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: something that it's a big debate in this country, whether
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: people agree with it or not. I personally like think
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: it gives a certain like grounding for the, there's like
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: a historical aspect of it. And when things happen, it's like,
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Americans love seeing the ceremony that's over here. Like when
- 1:32:18Speaker 2: the queen passed away, the funeral is like very impressive
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: and it very much, I don't know, represents England for
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: the world.
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: You know, England, look at it. Yeah, because I think
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: England is something, there are a lot of great things.
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: It's like very proper and it's like.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: There's a lot of things that I would not agree
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: with as well. I think it is very like- It's
- 1:32:38Speaker 2: rigid almost. It's a very polarizing subject. But yeah, but
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: I definitely wouldn't envy.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: The lifestyle oh yeah it seems like it would be
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: tough like you're such a and you have to be
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: a concierge to your own country and you have to
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: be such a representative I.
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: Never talk about anything negatively their thing they say never
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: complain never explain so anything that happens they just right
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: you're just a middle man yeah you can't show any
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: emotion like even at like funerals and stuff like you're
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: not meant to cry and stuff it's like really quite hardcore.
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah gosh I remember my first funeral dude Not fun,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: are they? I was not good at funerals. No. I
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: was the worst, dude.
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: I feel like they needed to mark it, though. I
- 1:33:25Speaker 2: missed my grandmother's funeral. Did you see that court case
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: last year that I was in? I was in a
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: court case last year.
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: All my friends are criminals, to be honest with you.
- 1:33:36Speaker 2: She died at the start of the court case and
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: the funeral was like midway through it because she had
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: to be buried.
- 1:33:43Speaker 1: And you couldn't go.
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: I couldn't, and I still feel weird about it, that
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: there was no marking of the like, you know, seeing
- 1:33:51Speaker 2: a coffin be put into a grave and covered. And
- 1:33:54Speaker 2: I don't know, there's something in me that's like, even
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: like visiting her grave now, there's not, it still feels
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: like an open book.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:34:02Speaker 2: Open door, I guess. I think funerals are important for
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: the ceremony of like marking it. It's kind of like
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: the first day of grief as well, because before you
- 1:34:10Speaker 2: go to a funeral and there's like a weird month
- 1:34:13Speaker 2: or whatever where everything's like really fucking intense and grief stricken.
- 1:34:17Speaker 2: And then kind of the funeral is the day that
- 1:34:19Speaker 2: you go, now we start processing it.
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It is kind of wild, dude. Does
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: any of your music get played at funerals too or not? Yeah.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: I've got a song that I wrote about my grandmother
- 1:34:28Speaker 2: called supermarket flowers, which, um, is, um, a popular funeral song. If,
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: if that's like a thing to be proud of, like
- 1:34:35Speaker 2: I've got a popular funeral song, but yeah, it's such
- 1:34:37Speaker 2: an important.
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: It's a song that it's a, it's a moment that
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: people don't think of that much that needs a song
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: kind of in a way, maybe, or I don't know,
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: maybe as a songwriter, maybe people do think about specific
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: moments that need songs, but I definitely do.
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Like, I definitely know what I would have at my funeral.
- 1:34:52Speaker 2: Same as I would have at my wedding. You know,
- 1:34:54Speaker 2: you know, you know what, what tunes you want. There's
- 1:34:58Speaker 2: an Irish folk song, which is like always the final
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: song that is sung on a folk night, which is
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: called The Parting Glass, where it's like.
- 1:35:06Speaker 1: Are the pogues or no? No, it's like traditional. It's like.
- 1:35:12Speaker 3: Of all the money that I had, I spent it
- 1:35:16Speaker 3: in good company. And all the harm that I had done, alas,
- 1:35:22Speaker 3: it was to none but me.
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: And it's basically like all of the things I did.
- 1:35:27Speaker 3: And all I've done for want of wit to memory
- 1:35:31Speaker 3: now I can't recall. So fill to me the parting glass.
- 1:35:37Speaker 3: Good night and joy be with you all.
- 1:35:39Speaker 2: It's basically the last drink of the night. This is, uh,
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: I sort of feel weird that I just sung on. No,
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: but there's a farewell. But yeah, it's a, um, the
- 1:35:50Speaker 2: last drink of the night. And it's basically everything that's happened.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: It's happened.
- 1:35:54Speaker 2: And let's have this final drink and then, get on
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: with our lives and i think that's quite a nice
- 1:35:57Speaker 2: way to like go out of this world basically being
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: like of all the of all the comrades that ever
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: i've had i uh i'm i'm sorry that i'm going
- 1:36:06Speaker 2: away you know like it's like a it's just a
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: message to people i like.
- 1:36:09Speaker 1: It no man i appreciate you sharing that too yeah
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: it's nice it's nice man that from everyone that's ever
- 1:36:15Speaker 1: spoken about you i've heard you always seem like a
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: person that just shares the gift of who you are
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: with the world as clearly as you know how to
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: and navigate that the best you can man so i
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: appreciate you singing that's nice dude and And, yeah, I
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: appreciate you spending time with me, man. Thank you. Thanks
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: for coming as well, man. I really, really have enjoyed this.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: I feel bad that I referenced the term ginger, and
- 1:36:34Speaker 1: I feel bad that I mispronounced the name of this place, man. Oh,
- 1:36:38Speaker 1: that's all right. I thought you were doing it on purpose. Okay,
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I was. All good. No, no, the ginger thing. And
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: I wasn't.
- 1:36:44Speaker 2: The ginger thing, I'm actually like, I have a good
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: sense of humor, so I'm fun with being ripped.
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I just shouldn't have said it, though.
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: No, but I'm like, my point is, if this is
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: on limits, then... you know, other things should be too.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, it shouldn't be the only thing that's
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: on limits. Oh, I agree, brother. And let me tell
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: you this, we're turning on all the limits. We'll get
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: y'all to a live show and turn on all the limits.
- 1:37:11Speaker 1: I hope you make a million more wonderful songs and
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: just keep blessing us with your gifts. Thank you so much,
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: Ed Sheeran. Nice one. Thank you. Cheers, man. Thank you.
