- 0:00Speaker 1: Skin is deeply personal, which is a strange thing to
- 0:03Speaker 1: say about something that everyone can see. Before people know
- 0:07Speaker 1: our story or even our name, our skin becomes part
- 0:11Speaker 1: of their first impression of us. It ships how we
- 0:14Speaker 1: get dressed, how we sleep, how we work, go to school, date,
- 0:18Speaker 1: take photos, attend parties, and sometimes it dictates whether we
- 0:22Speaker 1: even want to leave the house.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It just felt like I was a shell of a
- 0:26Speaker 2: person and I just wanted to hide.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So when it starts flaring, itching, or doing something completely unpredictable,
- 0:34Speaker 1: the day can start to feel like a series of negotiations,
- 0:38Speaker 1: all centered around that pesky little question, how can I
- 0:43Speaker 1: make myself less visible?
- 0:46Speaker 2: My outfits are dependent on my skin condition about long legs,
- 0:50Speaker 2: and unfortunately these long legs are covered in eczema, so
- 0:55Speaker 2: usually I'm going to aim for pants.
- 0:59Speaker 1: We have spent enough time hiding the parts of this
- 1:02Speaker 1: experience that are already so hard to carry on our own,
- 1:06Speaker 1: So on this show, we're giving it space. I'm Dylan
- 1:10Speaker 1: Maren and this is Skin Quarries, the podcast about what
- 1:13Speaker 1: it means to live in our skin. This season, we
- 1:16Speaker 1: are talking to people living with skin conditions about the
- 1:19Speaker 1: questions that don't always get asked, like, what does it
- 1:23Speaker 1: feel like when your body becomes unpredictable?
- 1:26Speaker 2: I lost the ability to grow hair, I could not
- 1:29Speaker 2: recognize myself in the mirror.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I've never felt as horrible as trying to put a
- 1:33Speaker 3: child with open wounds and a bathtub of salt. When
- 1:35Speaker 3: people tell you that it's like the miracle cure.
- 1:38Speaker 1: How do you hold on to your joy when your
- 1:40Speaker 1: skin keeps interrupting the plan?
- 1:42Speaker 3: It destroys your heart to see your child non stop rubbing, itching, scratching.
- 1:47Speaker 1: And what changes when you finally meet people who get it.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I went up to a handful of black girls in
- 1:53Speaker 2: the room, and I was like, can I take a
- 1:54Speaker 2: photo of our hands? Because I just have never seen
- 1:56Speaker 2: people's hands who look like mine, you know, And I
- 1:59Speaker 2: was just so excited about it.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Skin can be funny, frustrating, vulnerable, confusing, exhausting, and so dramatic,
- 2:08Speaker 1: but it can also connect us to our bodies and
- 2:11Speaker 1: to each other.
- 2:12Speaker 3: It was the hardest thing, and I just I didn't
- 2:14Speaker 3: want anybody to have to go through that. That's why
- 2:16Speaker 3: I started the Exema Company.
- 2:17Speaker 2: The Black Girls with Exzema community like supports me and
- 2:20Speaker 2: poors into me just as much as I pour into them.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So let's talk about it. This is skin Querries, dropping
- 2:26Speaker 1: every other week starting July twenty third. Follow and subscribe
