- 0:15Speaker 1: the Gentleman Killer. From CBS, this is Inner Sanctum Mysteries,

- 0:34Speaker 1: Tepperman wrote the script, and Hyman Brown directed and produced.
- 0:38Speaker 1: The house, the visitor, and a radio set are all
- 0:41Speaker 1: part of Ethel Canning's uneasy night. Now, back to the
- 0:46Speaker 1: golden age of radio.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Good evening, creeps.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Tonight, your mystery playhouse presents Inner Sanctum.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Good evening, friends of the Inner Sanctum.
- 1:08Speaker 3: This is your host inviting you in through the squeaking door.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Ah, I just left a friend of mine.
- 1:15Speaker 3: He runs an all-night billiard academy near the cemetery. As
- 1:20Speaker 3: after midnight, he.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Uncovers the ghoul tables.
- 1:23Speaker 4: But no rough stuff at his place.
- 1:26Speaker 3: No, he settles all arguments by arbitration. Simply lifts the
- 1:30Speaker 3: shroud and points out they haven't a leg to stand on.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Believes the old motto that a fiend in need is
- 1:38Speaker 3: a fiend indeed. Now, dust off the edge of your chair...
- 1:56Speaker 3: because that's where you'll be sitting for the rest of
- 1:58Speaker 3: this half hour... And listen to Murder Comes at Midnight.
- 2:04Speaker 3: This is the story of how one average family, even
- 2:08Speaker 3: as yours and mine, spent a quiet night at their
- 2:10Speaker 3: rented country house. A night of terror. As I said,
- 2:17Speaker 3: the Cannings were just an average family. Harry was 29
- 2:21Speaker 3: and worked as a sound engineer for a broadcasting studio
- 2:24Speaker 3: in the city. Ethel was 27 and had been a
- 2:28Speaker 3: schoolteacher before.
- 2:29Speaker 2: She was married.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Now she was kept pretty busy between writing the great
- 2:33Speaker 3: American novel and taking care of Judy, her seven-year-old daughter.
- 2:37Speaker 3: This was the first year they had rented a house
- 2:39Speaker 3: in the country for the summer, and Ethel didn't take
- 2:41Speaker 3: much to the idea of being alone either.
- 2:46Speaker 5: At first, I didn't know what it was that woke me.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Perhaps it was because I was expecting Harry. He phoned
- 2:55Speaker 5: that he was working overtime. He wouldn't be home till
- 2:57Speaker 5: after midnight. I didn't like the idea of us driving
- 3:00Speaker 5: 60 miles from this city at that hour. Or maybe
- 3:04Speaker 5: it was just because I wasn't used to being alone
- 3:06Speaker 5: with Judy in the old house. I got out of bed.
- 3:11Speaker 5: I opened the connecting door to Judy's room. She was sleeping. Quietly.
- 3:20Speaker 5: I closed the door softly. Went across to my window.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Something had awakened me.
- 3:28Speaker 6: What?
- 3:28Speaker 5: What? Was it a sound I heard in my sleep?
- 3:33Speaker 2: Or....
- 3:35Speaker 5: Or was it a premonition? I looked out the window.
- 3:40Speaker 5: The night was dark with a thousand secrets. Harry should
- 3:44Speaker 5: have been home by this time. My watch showed a
- 3:46Speaker 5: few minutes after twelve. Maybe he'd had an accident. Maybe
- 3:49Speaker 5: that's why I awakened. Some sort of telepathy. And then
- 3:54Speaker 5: I saw the headlights. It was Harry's. He was turning
- 3:57Speaker 5: in our road. The headlights fazed me for a moment
- 3:59Speaker 5: as he swung into our driveway. Everything was all right then.
- 4:04Speaker 5: I'll be right down, Harry. Breathlessly, I raced downstairs to
- 4:08Speaker 5: let him in. I was so happy I could cry.
- 4:11Speaker 5: It was only then I realized what tension I'd been under,
- 4:13Speaker 5: all because of my silly fears. I unlocked the door quickly. Oh, Harry,
- 4:18Speaker 5: I was so worried.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Sorry to bother you so late, miss. I had an
- 4:24Speaker 2: accident with my car. Oh, I.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I thought you were my husband.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Sorry to disappoint you.
- 4:33Speaker 5: Oh, no, no, I'm afraid you can't come in. My
- 4:35Speaker 5: husband isn't home yet.
- 4:36Speaker 2: Well, it won't be for long.
- 4:38Speaker 5: Oh, my heavens, you're hurt.
- 4:40Speaker 2: It's your arm.
- 4:41Speaker 4: I hurt it in the accident. I'm afraid it's broken.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Oh, you poor man. Here, sit down. Sit down right here.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Oh, that's better.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Here.
- 4:51Speaker 5: Your arm's so limp. Do you really think it's broken?
- 4:54Speaker 2: I can't tell. It's kind of numb.
- 4:57Speaker 5: Oh, dear, I feel so helpless. I don't know what
- 5:00Speaker 5: to do. I took a first aid course during the war,
- 5:03Speaker 5: but I don't remember a thing. Maybe I'd better call Dr.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Schultz.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Oh, please, don't go to the trouble.
- 5:08Speaker 5: There's no trouble. The phone's right here.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I said no, doctor. But it's all right.
- 5:11Speaker 2: Put down that phone, please.
- 5:14Speaker 5: I don't understand.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Maybe you understand this. A gun. Put the phone down.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Who are you? I'll ask the questions from now on.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Your name's Canning, isn't it?
- 5:34Speaker 5: How did you know?
- 5:35Speaker 2: Name's on the door, isn't it?
- 5:37Speaker 5: Oh.
- 5:38Speaker 2: What kind of phone is that?
- 5:41Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 5:41Speaker 2: Party line?
- 5:42Speaker 5: No, it's a private one.
- 5:44Speaker 2: Can you dial or do you have to ask the
- 5:45Speaker 2: operator for the number?
- 5:46Speaker 5: No, you just dial.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Good.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Push the phone over here to this side of the table.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Who were you going to call?
- 5:54Speaker 4: The phone, please.
- 5:56Speaker 5: You'd better get out of here before my husband comes home.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Oh, how do you think he'd make out in an
- 6:03Speaker 4: argument with this?
- 6:06Speaker 5: Oh.
- 6:07Speaker 2: The phone. Thank you.
- 6:12Speaker 4: Step back a little. That's good, good. I have to
- 6:19Speaker 4: put this gun down while I make my call.
- 6:21Speaker 2: It's on the mind.
- 6:23Speaker 4: But you understand that I can pick it up faster
- 6:26Speaker 4: than you could reach it from there, don't you?
- 6:29Speaker 5: Yes, I understand.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I see. We'll get along all right.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Oh, operator, get me Plaza 9970. Yeah, I'm very pleased.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Well, this is 864.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Please, after your phone call.
- 6:44Speaker 5: You get out before my husband comes home. He's late already.
- 6:49Speaker 4: You wouldn't turn an injured man out of your house in.
- 6:52Speaker 2: The middle of the night. Oh, hello, Linda. That's right.
- 6:57Speaker 4: I had a little trouble.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I hurt my arm.
- 7:00Speaker 4: Look, I think.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You'd better come up here.
- 7:03Speaker 4: Yeah, and bring Fred and Doc Stetson along. No, no, no.
- 7:07Speaker 2: It's fine.
- 7:08Speaker 4: There won't be any trouble. I'm a guest of some
- 7:13Speaker 4: very good friends up here. Cannings and me. Or you
- 7:18Speaker 4: drive up Highway 26 through a cord and turn right when.
- 7:21Speaker 2: You pass the first gas station. Just a mile from there.
- 7:26Speaker 4: You ought to be here by six in the morning.
- 7:28Speaker 4: There'll be a light in the downstairs window. Drive in.
- 7:32Speaker 2: See you in the morning.
- 7:35Speaker 5: You can't stay here all night. You've got to go.
- 7:45Speaker 4: What's that over there? Radio?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yes. Pretty big.
- 7:49Speaker 5: It's a sending and receiving set. Terry built it himself.
- 7:51Speaker 5: He's a radio engineer.
- 7:52Speaker 2: Can you get short waves? Police calls? Yes. Turn it on.
- 7:59Speaker 2: But I don't... Turn it on. No! Well.
- 8:05Speaker 4: Getting brave, huh?
- 8:07Speaker 5: I don't think you'd dare to shoot me.
- 8:09Speaker 2: It would be murder.
- 8:10Speaker 5: They'd send you to the chair. Now you get out
- 8:13Speaker 5: of here. You call your friends and tell them to
- 8:14Speaker 5: meet you someplace else. There, I've opened the door. Now
- 8:17Speaker 5: get out!
- 8:21Speaker 4: Worried about your husband, aren't you? Afraid of what'll happen
- 8:25Speaker 4: to him if he comes home now, huh?
- 8:26Speaker 5: I want you to go away. And if you don't
- 8:28Speaker 5: go now, I'll run out and scream for help. There
- 8:30Speaker 5: are other houses in this neighborhood and somebody will hear me.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Oh, go ahead and run.
- 8:35Speaker 5: What?
- 8:36Speaker 2: I won't shoot you.
- 8:38Speaker 6: You won't?
- 8:40Speaker 4: I don't have to.
- 8:42Speaker 5: What do you mean?
- 8:45Speaker 4: You wouldn't dare to run out and leave your kid upstairs.
- 8:50Speaker 4: That little red-headed kid with the cute curls.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Judy.
- 8:59Speaker 5: How do you know I have a daughter?
- 9:01Speaker 2: Easy.
- 9:02Speaker 4: The doll carriage over there.
- 9:04Speaker 5: How do you know she has red curls?
- 9:06Speaker 2: Maybe I guessed it.
- 9:09Speaker 5: And her name, too?
- 9:12Speaker 2: Turn on that radio.
- 9:13Speaker 4: All right.
- 9:26Speaker 6: All cars must be searched, every passenger positively identified. Officers
- 9:31Speaker 6: are warned to exercise extreme caution. Though believed to be wounded,
- 9:36Speaker 6: he's armed and dangerous. I will repeat, Arnie Bishop, known
- 9:41Speaker 6: as the Gentleman Killer... escaped from custody on board the
- 9:44Speaker 6: Allegheny Limited... at 11 o'clock while being escorted to the
- 9:48Speaker 6: death house at the state prison.
- 9:51Speaker 2: He's thought to be heading north in the direction Send
- 9:53Speaker 2: it off. Now you know who I am.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Arnie Bishop. You're Arnie Bishop.
- 10:02Speaker 2: How many rooms in this house? Eight. Fine, fine.
- 10:07Speaker 4: My friends and I will stay here for a few days.
- 10:09Speaker 2: This will make a fine hideout.
- 10:10Speaker 5: What will you do when my husband comes home?
- 10:13Speaker 2: Don't worry about him.
- 10:16Speaker 5: Now.
- 10:17Speaker 4: Suppose we go in the kitchen, then you can make
- 10:19Speaker 4: me something to eat. Wait.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Huh?
- 10:22Speaker 5: Why did you choose this house to come to? This
- 10:25Speaker 5: house of all of us?
- 10:27Speaker 2: Can't you guess?
- 10:30Speaker 5: Yes, I think so. How did you know Judy's name?
- 10:34Speaker 5: And about the color of her hair?
- 10:35Speaker 2: Ah, you're getting warm.
- 10:36Speaker 5: My husband, Harry. Harry told me.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Oh, you know you're pretty smart.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Oh, please, don't you have any pity at all? Tell
- 10:40Speaker 5: me what you did to Harry.
- 10:41Speaker 4: He's not hurt much. I just tapped him on the head.
- 10:46Speaker 4: He picked me up on the road, gave me a lift.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I pumped him, found out all about this house and.
- 10:53Speaker 2: About you and Judy. Then I knocked him out and
- 10:58Speaker 2: kept going. It was pretty tough driving with one hand,
- 11:01Speaker 2: but I made it.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Where's Harry now?
- 11:03Speaker 2: In the back of the car. He can't get loose.
- 11:05Speaker 5: I'm going out to.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Stay where you are.
- 11:06Speaker 5: But Harry's hurt. I can't leave him out there alone.
- 11:10Speaker 2: About this little red-headed kid of yours. When does he sleep?
- 11:15Speaker 4: Upstairs?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Better stay here if you want to make sure. Oh, no.
- 11:25Speaker 5: That's better.
- 11:28Speaker 4: No.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Suppose we have something to eat.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Now let's return to the little white shingled house on
- 11:44Speaker 3: the hill where Ethel Canning is entertaining her uninvited guest,
- 11:49Speaker 3: Arnie Bishop. You know, he's a pretty courageous guy for
- 11:52Speaker 3: an ex-convict. But then maybe he has the courage of
- 11:56Speaker 3: his convictions. But Arnie isn't so smart, you know, tangling
- 12:03Speaker 3: with a red-headed gal.
- 12:05Speaker 4: He ought to recall that old ditty.
- 12:08Speaker 2: How's it go?
- 12:10Speaker 3: Beware of a girl with deep red hair. A man
- 12:13Speaker 3: is safer in the electric chair. But who can tell
- 12:17Speaker 3: how a tale will end up in a sanctum? Let's
- 12:20Speaker 3: join them in the kitchen. Excellent bacon and eggs. I'm
- 12:27Speaker 3: sure my friends will like your cooking when they come.
- 12:30Speaker 5: More coffee?
- 12:31Speaker 2: Yes, please.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Careful.
- 12:36Speaker 5: I was only reaching for the coffee cup.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I thought you might have ideas about grabbing this.
- 12:46Speaker 5: There's your coffee.
- 12:50Speaker 2: What time is it?
- 12:51Speaker 5: Twenty after two.
- 12:51Speaker 4: Uh-huh. Three and a half hours to go before my
- 12:55Speaker 4: friends get here.
- 12:57Speaker 5: How will they get through the roadblock?
- 12:58Speaker 2: Oh, you'll leave it to them. Oh.
- 13:01Speaker 4: What's that?
- 13:01Speaker 5: That's the telephone. It's in the living room.
- 13:02Speaker 2: You better get to it.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Oh, you don't let go of that gun.
- 13:08Speaker 3: You shouldn't have tried that.
- 13:12Speaker 5: What are you going to do?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Answer that telephone first.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Get going.
- 13:15Speaker 5: Yes, sir.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Anybody in the habit of calling you at this hour? No.
- 13:19Speaker 2: All right, answer it.
- 13:20Speaker 4: But be careful what you say.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Hello?
- 13:25Speaker 5: Yes, this is Mrs. Canning.
- 13:28Speaker 2: Oh.
- 13:30Speaker 5: This is for you. Oh.
- 13:32Speaker 2: All right. Lay the receiver down on the table and
- 13:36Speaker 2: walk away. That's far enough. Don't try anything. Hello? Linda. Linda.
- 13:47Speaker 4: Did you get started yet?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Where are you? What? Roadblock.
- 13:57Speaker 4: You've got to get through. I need Doc Stetson. You've
- 14:01Speaker 4: got to make it, Linda.
- 14:01Speaker 5: I can't stay awake forever.
- 14:02Speaker 2: All right, all right. Do your best. Call me back later.
- 14:10Speaker 5: Oh. What's the matter, Mr.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Bishop?
- 14:16Speaker 5: Are your friends falling down on you? Shut up.
- 14:18Speaker 4: I've got to think.
- 14:19Speaker 6: Oh, you don't have anything to.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Worry about, Mr. Bishop. Aren't you a guest of the
- 14:23Speaker 5: cannings in the little white-shingled house a mile off Highway
- 14:25Speaker 5: 26 north of Accord?
- 14:26Speaker 4: Oh, you can be sarcastic, too.
- 14:29Speaker 5: Oh, I wouldn't dare be sarcastic to you, Mr.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Bishop.
- 14:32Speaker 5: Especially when you have that gun. And with my husband
- 14:34Speaker 5: unconscious in the car. And you threatening to harm my child.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Oh, no.
- 14:38Speaker 5: No, you still hold all the cards, Mr. Bishop. And
- 14:41Speaker 5: you're such a big, strong, brave man.
- 14:45Speaker 2: What are you trying to do, get me mad enough
- 14:47Speaker 2: to kill me?
- 14:47Speaker 5: Aren't you going to kill me anyway?
- 14:48Speaker 4: What makes you think that?
- 14:49Speaker 5: Because you're a killer by instinct, Mr.
- 14:52Speaker 4: Bishop.
- 14:53Speaker 5: It's easier for you to kill than to do anything else.
- 14:56Speaker 5: I wonder why you didn't murder my husband instead of
- 14:57Speaker 5: just knocking him out. Was it because you thought you
- 15:00Speaker 5: might need him?
- 15:02Speaker 4: Well, you're not afraid of me anymore.
- 15:04Speaker 5: No, I'm not. No, I just realized. I can't afford
- 15:08Speaker 5: to be afraid.
- 15:09Speaker 2: What?
- 15:10Speaker 5: I'm a woman fighting for her family, for Harry and Judy.
- 15:13Speaker 2: What?
- 15:13Speaker 5: And I've got to use all my wits against you.
- 15:17Speaker 5: I can't afford to be afraid.
- 15:18Speaker 2: You've got some scheme in that crazy little brain of yours.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yes, Mr. Bishop, I have. I think I've found a
- 15:24Speaker 5: chink in your armor. You're a coward.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Me?
- 15:28Speaker 5: Yes, you. You're the one who's afraid now. Your friends
- 15:31Speaker 5: aren't coming. You have a wound in your arm that
- 15:34Speaker 5: needs treatment, and you know you can't trust me. You
- 15:37Speaker 5: don't dare close your eyes, even for five minutes. And
- 15:39Speaker 5: you may have to stay here for several days. How
- 15:41Speaker 5: do you like the prospect of staying awake night and day,
- 15:44Speaker 5: watching me every minute of the time, afraid that you
- 15:46Speaker 5: might drop off to sleep at any minute?
- 15:48Speaker 4: Oh, that's how you figure it, huh?
- 15:49Speaker 5: Maybe you'd better kill us all right now, Mr. Bishop.
- 15:52Speaker 5: That would be easy, wouldn't it? Just three bullets. Then
- 15:55Speaker 5: you wouldn't have to worry about watching anyone.
- 15:57Speaker 2: That's an excellent idea, Mrs. Canning. Yes.
- 16:01Speaker 5: But then you'd have other worse things to worry about.
- 16:03Speaker 4: Such as?
- 16:03Speaker 5: This is Saturday morning. The milkman will come to collect
- 16:06Speaker 5: for the week's milk. The neighbors will stop by to
- 16:08Speaker 5: ask if I want my marketing done. And what will
- 16:11Speaker 5: you do? Sculpt in the cellar while they ring the doorbell?
- 16:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 5: And then there's the police.
- 16:16Speaker 2: What about the police?
- 16:17Speaker 5: They'll surely search this part of the country. They'll be
- 16:20Speaker 5: making inquiries at all the houses. Do you want them
- 16:22Speaker 5: to find the car outside? With Harry in it?
- 16:29Speaker 4: You figured all the angles, huh? You know, you're pretty smart, Mrs.
- 16:34Speaker 2: Canning.
- 16:35Speaker 4: I think you're even smarter than Linda.
- 16:38Speaker 2: But you forget one thing.
- 16:41Speaker 5: Yes?
- 16:43Speaker 2: You forget that little girl upstairs. What do.
- 16:47Speaker 5: You mean?
- 16:48Speaker 2: Come along and I'll show you. Upstairs.
- 16:51Speaker 5: You stay away from Judy!
- 16:54Speaker 4: Maybe you think you've got everything figured out, but I'm
- 16:56Speaker 4: still the boss. Gun muscle hurts, doesn't it?
- 17:00Speaker 2: But.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Now, shall we go upstairs?
- 17:05Speaker 5: That's better.
- 17:12Speaker 4: So you think Arnie Bishop is licked, huh?
- 17:15Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Now, which is Judy's room?
- 17:22Speaker 5: What are you going to do to her?
- 17:23Speaker 4: Which is Judy's room? Or are you going to make
- 17:25Speaker 4: me open all the doors to find her?
- 17:29Speaker 5: That one.
- 17:30Speaker 2: Uh-huh. All right, let's go in.
- 17:33Speaker 4: You first, Mrs.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Canning.
- 17:34Speaker 5: I warn you, if you have to.
- 17:35Speaker 4: You first, Mrs.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Canning.
- 17:38Speaker 5: Please. Please don't wake her.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Ah, very pretty child. How peaceful she looks. And innocent.
- 17:51Speaker 4: You know, childhood's the best time of life. It's almost
- 17:56Speaker 4: a pity to grow up out of it.
- 17:58Speaker 5: You couldn't. You couldn't hurt her.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Oh, I assure you, Mrs. Canning, I won't lay a
- 18:02Speaker 4: hand on her.
- 18:04Speaker 2: Oh, no. Not on a beautiful child like that. No.
- 18:08Speaker 4: But I've got to protect myself.
- 18:13Speaker 2: Let's see.
- 18:16Speaker 4: That's the connecting door to your room, isn't it? Yes.
- 18:19Speaker 2: There's a key in the door. Lock it, please.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Okay.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Now give me the key. Thank you. Now we'll go
- 18:32Speaker 2: out the way we came in.
- 18:33Speaker 4: I'll take the key out of this door, too.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 18:39Speaker 4: You first.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Now we'll lock this door on the outside. There we.
- 18:49Speaker 4: Are.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Everything's set. Good.
- 18:53Speaker 5: You just want to make sure she doesn't get out?
- 18:55Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Now, will you pull the mattress and sheets off your
- 19:01Speaker 4: bed and bring them out.
- 19:02Speaker 2: Here, please?
- 19:03Speaker 5: Are you going to sleep in front of her door?
- 19:05Speaker 2: Do as I say.
- 19:05Speaker 5: All right.
- 19:07Speaker 2: I'll help you.
- 19:07Speaker 5: I don't understand. Why do you want to sleep out here?
- 19:12Speaker 4: You know, I'm... Everything.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Just the way I want it.
- 19:22Speaker 4: The mattress against Judy's door.
- 19:24Speaker 5: But you can't sleep on it that way, half up
- 19:25Speaker 5: against the door.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I didn't say I was going to sleep on it.
- 19:27Speaker 5: Well, what are you going to do?
- 19:28Speaker 2: Mrs.
- 19:28Speaker 4: Canning, we'll see if you can figure out how to
- 19:31Speaker 4: beat this angle. What would happen if I were.
- 19:37Speaker 2: To put a match to this mattress and bedding? Oh, no!
- 19:41Speaker 4: This whole floor would be in flames in five minutes.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Both doors locked. Judy wouldn't have.
- 19:48Speaker 2: Much of a chance. Oh, no!
- 19:50Speaker 5: Me.
- 19:50Speaker 4: Oh, no. Don't think Arnie Bishop is licked, Mrs.
- 19:55Speaker 2: Canning.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 19:57Speaker 4: You're right about one thing, Mrs.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Canning.
- 19:59Speaker 4: I am in a corner. With this bum arm, I've
- 20:03Speaker 4: got no chance of running if the police come. So
- 20:05Speaker 4: if they do, and if I'm cornered, I'll set a
- 20:10Speaker 4: match to this mattress and.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Fight him off till the whole house is just a
- 20:15Speaker 2: bunch of rubble with.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Judy in it.
- 20:19Speaker 2: You understand me thoroughly, Mrs.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Canning, huh? Yes.
- 20:25Speaker 4: So it's up to you to see that the police
- 20:28Speaker 4: don't come. You're going to lie for me, Mrs. Canning,
- 20:32Speaker 4: and you're going to cheat for me, and.
- 20:34Speaker 2: You're going to kill for me if necessary. Because... I
- 20:38Speaker 2: always have a match ready. Now, do you still feel
- 20:44Speaker 2: like trying any tricks?
- 20:48Speaker 5: I'll do whatever you say.
- 20:52Speaker 2: More like it.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Now, the first thing you're to do, go downstairs and
- 20:57Speaker 4: run that car into the garage.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Get it out of the way.
- 20:59Speaker 4: But don't touch your husband. Don't even look in the
- 21:01Speaker 4: back of the car. I'll be watching, understand?
- 21:05Speaker 2: Yes. Glad we understand each other at last.
- 21:19Speaker 4: I'll be standing right here in the driveway, so don't
- 21:22Speaker 4: try any tricks.
- 21:22Speaker 2: I won't.
- 21:24Speaker 4: Remember, I'm watching you. Harry.
- 21:28Speaker 5: Harry, dear, can you hear me?
- 21:31Speaker 2: Harry? Harry?
- 21:35Speaker 5: Oh, he's still unconscious. There's blood on his head.
- 21:38Speaker 6: Yes, I'm coming.
- 21:46Speaker 2: You did take a look at him, didn't you? No, no.
- 21:48Speaker 2: All right.
- 21:49Speaker 5: No.
- 21:49Speaker 2: All right, come inside.
- 21:55Speaker 4: Beautiful night, isn't it?
- 21:57Speaker 5: It'll be morning soon.
- 21:59Speaker 2: What time is it?
- 21:59Speaker 5: Almost six. The milkman should be here soon. Oh?
- 22:04Speaker 2: Well, here's where you start lying for me. After you, madam. Now.
- 22:14Speaker 4: I'm going to sit right here in this chair with
- 22:17Speaker 4: my hand in my pocket.
- 22:20Speaker 2: And in my hand's the gun.
- 22:21Speaker 4: Understand?
- 22:23Speaker 5: Yes.
- 22:25Speaker 4: That's the milkman. You tell him I'm your cousin just
- 22:28Speaker 4: visiting here for a few days.
- 22:30Speaker 5: He'll wonder why you're up so early.
- 22:31Speaker 2: Let him wonder. Go on. Answer it.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Good morning, Miss Canning.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I'm the new milkman on the route.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Hope I didn't wake you up.
- 22:42Speaker 5: Come in, please.
- 22:43Speaker 3: That's two bottles of milk you wanted this morning and
- 22:46Speaker 3: a bottle of cream.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Yes, you can put them on the table.
- 22:49Speaker 4: All right.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Oh, this is my cousin. He's visiting us for a
- 22:53Speaker 5: few days.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Oh, how are you?
- 22:54Speaker 2: Hello.
- 22:55Speaker 5: You have my bill?
- 22:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I got it right here in my pocket. Here. Hey,
- 23:00Speaker 4: is that.
- 23:00Speaker 2: That's right, Bishop.
- 23:01Speaker 6: It's a gun.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Sit still and take your hand out of your pocket
- 23:05Speaker 4: very carefully.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Okay, okay. You win. You win.
- 23:11Speaker 4: But how come a milkman with a gun? I, uh...
- 23:15Speaker 4: I borrowed this coat from the regular milkman. I'm Sergeant Wright,
- 23:19Speaker 4: State Police.
- 23:20Speaker 5: What?
- 23:20Speaker 2: State Police?
- 23:23Speaker 4: How did you know I was here?
- 23:24Speaker 2: Mrs.
- 23:24Speaker 4: Canning told us.
- 23:26Speaker 2: She? Well, how? I didn't let her out of my sight.
- 23:29Speaker 4: She broadcast it to us.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Broadcast?
- 23:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 23:34Speaker 5: Over this set, Mr.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Bishop.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Remember the speech I made you? You didn't know what
- 23:38Speaker 5: had come over me. I was really talking to the
- 23:40Speaker 5: state police over the shortwave. Don't you remember I told
- 23:43Speaker 5: you that this was a sending and receiving set that
- 23:45Speaker 5: my husband built it? And when I turned off the
- 23:47Speaker 5: shortwave signals, I turned the switch to sending. And then
- 23:50Speaker 5: I hoped, I just hoped my message would get through.
- 23:52Speaker 2: I didn't think you were smart enough.
- 23:59Speaker 4: And I thought I had you scared stiff.
- 24:04Speaker 2: You looked like the kind who would scare easy. Oh,
- 24:07Speaker 2: I am, Mr.
- 24:08Speaker 5: Bishop, I am. But I warned you. This was a
- 24:13Speaker 5: time when I couldn't afford to be scared.
- 24:33Speaker 4: Which.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Which.
- 24:36Speaker 4: All goes to prove.
- 24:38Speaker 3: that a determined man can always get what he goes after.
- 24:42Speaker 3: You remember Bishop tried to get free board and lodging
- 24:44Speaker 3: for Methel Canning. He finally got it all right, but
- 24:49Speaker 3: not exactly where he wanted it.
- 24:51Speaker 5: You know, as a matter.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Of fact, Bishop was the type of man who should
- 24:54Speaker 3: never have gone in for murder. Oh, too many risks.
- 24:59Speaker 3: He should have specialized in arson. That's always a sure-fire undertaking.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Hmm?
- 25:18Speaker 3: That was your host, Raymond Edward Johnson, closing the door
- 25:21Speaker 3: on Inner Sanctum, tonight's performance in the Mystery Playhouse.
- 25:26Speaker 2: It's late, Chris, so good night.
- 25:27Speaker 4: Sleep tight.
- 26:00Speaker 1: That brings Inner Sanctum Mysteries and Murder Comes at Midnight
- 26:04Speaker 1: to a close. Good night, and thank you for listening.
