Building the Barrier: IEC 61511 Part IV, SIS Design, Architecture, Voting, and the SIS/BPCS Separation

The safety requirements specification for SIF four one oh one dash oh three is signed. Now Diego Ferrer has to turn eighteen lines of requirements into transmitters, a logic solver, solenoids and a valve, and the first design that lands on Noor Al Shamsi's desk shares a pressure tap with the control system. Over a week of design reviews they work through what Edition 2 of IEC 61511 really demands of architecture: independence, hardware fault tolerance, prior use, voting, common cause, and a PFD number that has to mean something.
