- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff Legwall time here on a Friday afternoon.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Jeff Legwald's appearances are brought to you by the International
- 0:05Speaker 2: Brotherhood of Electrical Workers IBEW Local sixty eight. You start
- 0:09Speaker 2: with a job and you end with a career, Jeff.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We know that the top one hundred is in its
- 0:15Speaker 2: finishing stages. We'll get to that in just a moment.
- 0:18Speaker 2: But first, congratulations Gregan Carrey. It's about time things went
- 0:23Speaker 2: okay for them in life. They now have forty percent
- 0:27Speaker 2: of a baseball team. Jeff, What does this news today
- 0:34Speaker 2: say about what Gregan carries overall vision is for what
- 0:38Speaker 2: they're trying to do in Denver.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Well, I think it shows what they've said, you know,
- 0:44Speaker 3: they want to have a presence here, you know, they
- 0:49Speaker 3: I think they've been very cognizant of not wanting to
- 0:54Speaker 3: appear like they just showed up, you know, in Denver
- 0:58Speaker 3: and Colorado to be you know, sports owners. They you know,
- 1:02Speaker 3: they were very clear, as was Rob Walton. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 3: when they purchased the Broncos that they've they've you know,
- 1:10Speaker 3: spent time in Colorado, have lived in part time in Colorado.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Uh So, I think this has all been an important
- 1:18Speaker 3: part of their approach and how they've done things, and
- 1:23Speaker 3: I you know, I think they're business people. I think
- 1:27Speaker 3: they feel like this is a good chance to add
- 1:29Speaker 3: to the sports portfolio, you know, of what they already
- 1:33Speaker 3: had in business and in sports. So I think they
- 1:37Speaker 3: see it as a good investment. And you know, does
- 1:40Speaker 3: it mean you know, years and years and years for
- 1:43Speaker 3: now they they own more of the team. You know,
- 1:46Speaker 3: I don't know that we know that yet, but they
- 1:49Speaker 3: certainly were interested enough to get forty percent. That's not
- 1:53Speaker 3: like you're buying.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, substantial, you know whatever. That's not Tom Brady the Raiders, right, Yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 3: You're you're in, You're in it. I mean even Rob Walton,
- 2:04Speaker 3: you know, he's got a ten percent share of the Diamondbacks,
- 2:08Speaker 3: I believe, So you know, this is even you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: obviously significantly more than than that. So it's, uh, they
- 2:17Speaker 3: must feel good about the baseball and what it can mean,
- 2:20Speaker 3: because I don't I don't get a sense they were
- 2:22Speaker 3: looking for things that were just sort of happy talk investments.
- 2:27Speaker 3: They wanted real ones.
- 2:29Speaker 4: Is there anything maybe that we don't see where they
- 2:31Speaker 4: could benefit. I mean, obviously more profit they'll share in
- 2:34Speaker 4: some profit of the team when and if it does
- 2:36Speaker 4: even better than it's doing right now, all those sales,
- 2:39Speaker 4: all those Glazilla sales. Like what else where might they
- 2:42Speaker 4: benefit from this?
- 2:42Speaker 1: Jeff?
- 2:44Speaker 3: I think you know, whatever kind of impact this gives them,
- 2:48Speaker 3: you know, in the search of the sports entertainment district
- 2:52Speaker 3: around Course Field, you know, there's this, give them an
- 2:56Speaker 3: opportunity to be involved with that because that with what
- 3:01Speaker 3: they're planning around the new Broncos Stadium, that's a pretty
- 3:05Speaker 3: significant downtown footprint, you know, and in this city for them.
- 3:12Speaker 3: So I think you know, all sports owners are cognizant
- 3:16Speaker 3: of where what real estate and other ventures can mean
- 3:21Speaker 3: around the teams you own.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Jeff Legwell ESPN joining us here on a Friday afternoon, Jeff,
- 3:28Speaker 2: the top one hundred?
- 3:31Speaker 1: Is it?
- 3:31Speaker 2: Is it officially complete? Is it in the hands of
- 3:34Speaker 2: an editor? Where is it right now?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Did you click send?
- 3:39Speaker 3: Not yet a week a week from Sunday, but I
- 3:44Speaker 3: think send will be clicked this weekend at some point.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Okay, what happens at the very end? Okay? Are you
- 3:52Speaker 1: in the stressing part? What are we doing? Yes?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Like, what what are you looking for to maybe move
- 3:56Speaker 2: number seventy two all the way up to sixty seven.
- 3:59Speaker 1: What do you looking for right now?
- 4:01Speaker 3: I was just going to say, I was just telling
- 4:03Speaker 3: this to someone else. Today. I'm at the stage where
- 4:08Speaker 3: I'm like, I'm the biggest moron on the planet to
- 4:12Speaker 3: sort of have a job covering a team and all
- 4:15Speaker 3: that takes to do it, you know, if you want
- 4:17Speaker 3: to do it right, and then to do this on
- 4:21Speaker 3: top of that. I'm at that stage now, or I
- 4:24Speaker 3: am an idiot and I am awful for I will
- 4:30Speaker 3: go back and look at a player valuation I've done.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I will go back and I will check all of
- 4:36Speaker 3: my data. I will go back and look at all
- 4:38Speaker 3: of my notes from all of the interviews I did
- 4:42Speaker 3: about that player with scouts and coaches and everybody. I'll
- 4:46Speaker 3: look at all of it, and then I'll move the
- 4:48Speaker 3: guy to spots.
- 4:52Speaker 1: And for what for what?
- 4:54Speaker 3: No one cares. I mean, no one's going to come
- 4:56Speaker 3: up to me at the grocery stores say, dude, you
- 4:59Speaker 3: should have had that guy in eighty seven. No way,
- 5:02Speaker 3: no way, is he in eighty four?
- 5:04Speaker 1: All right, So, Jeff, that's one of my from at
- 5:07Speaker 1: right now.
- 5:07Speaker 2: One of my favorite things, and I know it's one
- 5:09Speaker 2: of your favorite parts of the top one hundred every
- 5:12Speaker 2: single year. And I don't know how much you can
- 5:14Speaker 2: give us, but number one hundred it's always your thing,
- 5:19Speaker 2: it's always your your kind of your pet prospect. So
- 5:22Speaker 2: to speak, at number one hundred, what can you tell
- 5:25Speaker 2: us today about number one hundred?
- 5:28Speaker 3: It's down to two players?
- 5:30Speaker 1: Oh wow, you haven't even settle ahead of the game.
- 5:33Speaker 1: You haven't even settled on one yet.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And this is what I'm talking about. And I've been
- 5:39Speaker 3: going back and forth on something absolutely no one else
- 5:44Speaker 3: on planet Earth. Uh huh cares too much about. And
- 5:47Speaker 3: I will probably have an ulcer and an aneurysm together
- 5:52Speaker 3: picking number one hundred.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Jeff, tell people why in a list of one through
- 5:56Speaker 2: one hundred prospects, why number one hundred means so much
- 5:59Speaker 2: to you?
- 6:00Speaker 3: Well, the very first year I did it for publication,
- 6:03Speaker 3: Not the first year I did it, but the first
- 6:07Speaker 3: year I did it for publication, some thirty some years ago.
- 6:10Speaker 1: Meaning of one time, he was only doing it for fun.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Oh, pay improve my improved myself, but it became my
- 6:20Speaker 3: I thought it was a good way to say, this
- 6:23Speaker 3: player isn't in the top one hundred, but boy, keep
- 6:26Speaker 3: an eye on him. You know, could be a really
- 6:29Speaker 3: intriguing player, and I've i've you know, hit on a
- 6:34Speaker 3: few over the years, and one who played here, Brandon Marshall,
- 6:38Speaker 3: the receiver, was the number one hundred one year.
- 6:43Speaker 1: A great career for Brandon Marshall.
- 6:46Speaker 3: So that's why it's always just been a fun thing
- 6:49Speaker 3: for me to say, Hey, you know, it does mean
- 6:53Speaker 3: you're probably getting one raw no matter what happens. But
- 6:58Speaker 3: I just thought it was a fun way to point
- 6:59Speaker 3: out a cool prospect maybe people hadn't thought much about.
- 7:03Speaker 1: All right, So I am curious.
- 7:06Speaker 4: Was this class as hard because you guys, you've talked
- 7:08Speaker 4: about it not as much value in the later rounds.
- 7:11Speaker 4: It's just not been as sexy a draft. Teams are
- 7:13Speaker 4: looking towards next year versus this year. Has it been
- 7:17Speaker 4: harder because of that to get your one hundred out
- 7:19Speaker 4: or was it easier?
- 7:22Speaker 3: It's harder handy in some ways because the depth of
- 7:25Speaker 3: this draft is centered in a lot of defensive positions.
- 7:29Speaker 3: There's lots of edge rushers, there's lots of corners. I mean,
- 7:34Speaker 3: it's a good draft, a really good draft at some positions,
- 7:39Speaker 3: and you know, on draft Day, you know you're just
- 7:44Speaker 3: not going to have that many of those players get
- 7:48Speaker 3: selected where they belong because teams have needs and they
- 7:52Speaker 3: don't always draft, you know, best player available, they draft
- 7:56Speaker 3: best player they need that's available. That can impact how
- 8:01Speaker 3: it all looks. But this board is difficult because the
- 8:04Speaker 3: talent is very concentrated at probably three or four positions
- 8:09Speaker 3: along the way.
- 8:10Speaker 2: All right, guys, look for the top one hundred. It's
- 8:12Speaker 2: coming soon. We'll have a bigger preview of it coming
- 8:14Speaker 2: up on Monday. Jeff Legwold, everybody, ESPN. Jeff, go back
- 8:18Speaker 2: to the lab. We appreciate it, man, I appreciate it.
- 8:21Speaker 3: Fellas
