- 1:14nineteen forty seven, and the tunnel is the Case of the Lucrative Rex.
- 1:19I guess there, Nick, I feel like a Hollywood stumbleman about the pushed
- 1:23over a cliff. That's do as I told you, there shouldn't be any
- 1:26danger. The Andrew Writers Association is going to feel awfully bad about having this
- 1:30nice new car wreck, not if it gets the results they want. All
- 1:34right, hold tight, scarre's the curve and here we go. Now the
- 1:45Case of the Lugrative res Today is exciting. Nick Carter Adventure brought to you
- 1:49by old Dutch Glenter. Story begins with a young couple, Bob and Peggy
- 1:56Anderson, trying out their brand new car. Listen to that motar per Peggy.
- 2:05Oh, I feel it was good to be at the wheel of a
- 2:07new car again. Bob. This hill is steep. Maybe there's a curve
- 2:09at the bottom. Is there a curve that would be marked? You don't
- 2:14see any market, do you know? But Bob, there is a curve.
- 2:16Huh, don't ty? Peggy? All right, I guess too.
- 2:32Oh how about you? I gotta bump on my head. I guess no
- 2:38bones broken? Canna let me help you out? Oh, Bob, on
- 2:46new cars, it's pot wreck. Yeah golly. We not only went through
- 2:52the fence, we went halfway through the wall this barnay, you two,
- 2:55don't try to get away. Who's trying to get away? Ho? Don
- 3:00got gun you with us? Young fella right in here. Ruined my barn
- 3:02when you're reckless driving? Done you a thousand dollars damage to one thousand dollars.
- 3:06The whole barn isn't worth that. Don't go getting sashy, young lady.
- 3:09I'm a deputy sheriff. I am, I'll look mister Wick, my
- 3:13name is doing all right, mister Dylan. You'll get paid for the damage
- 3:17as soon as I can arrange it. I want cash, young fellow,
- 3:20haw, I haven't got enough with me. I get the cash, or
- 3:23I hold your car. Look, we can work this out somehow. Well,
- 3:29look tell you what. I got a nephew in the garage business.
- 3:32Now, this wreck of yours might be worth two or three hundred two in
- 3:36Now here's my proposition. I'll take what's left of the car and call it
- 3:40quits. Why am I take it or leave it? Well? All right,
- 3:47I'm licked. Yeah, pace another records afternoon, mighty nice new Royal
- 4:03Coop. Here's bill sale and good work. Dylan arranged another wreck by taking
- 4:11down that sign that says one in curve ahead? Did you a georged Rocky?
- 4:16Okay, Dylan, they got that bill of sale to Elmer Eustace.
- 4:20Same as usual. Ride in the Rocky. Look in the files and see
- 4:26if we got a wine colored Royal Coop model seventy six. Okay. Got
- 4:31a customer for a new job, just itching to pay a big price.
- 4:38Well, there's no model seventy six Royal Cope listed in the Bosses files.
- 4:43All right, Rocky, come on, let's go out and see if we
- 4:47can pick one up. Well, they're the records, mister Carter. In
- 5:01the past three months has been a positive epidemic offfects of new cause. So,
- 5:05mister Benson, hasn't a single car been recovered? Not one. That's
- 5:09why the Younger Writers Association is asking you to take the case very well.
- 5:14I warn you I'll have to have a free hand, no matter how strained
- 5:16my methods may seem, of course. Now what can we do for you?
- 5:20First, I'd like a list of all the cars stolen in the last
- 5:23three months, together were the names of their owners? Certainly? Oh,
- 5:27miss Collins, have you the car theft file? Here's mister Bote here it
- 5:32is. Oh, thank you. That's all right now, missus Collins,
- 5:36you are mister Carter. Anytime you want me, day or night, please
- 5:41call me. If I'm not in call Ms Collins. Oh. Here here's
- 5:46her home phone number and here's mine. Thanks. Now, if you'd excuse
- 5:53me, I've got some work to do. Oh nick, oh, asked
- 6:15Patsy. If you can there to give up playing with those radio sets for
- 6:18a minute, mister Benson's and the underwriters is here. Good. I was
- 6:23just going to call him, all right, shore men, Patsy, right,
- 6:29Nick, mister Benson, would you step in here, I'll say I
- 6:32will. Mister Carter, do you realize that it's forty eight hours since we
- 6:35gave you a free hand on this case, and in that time you haven't
- 6:39lifted a finger? Oh? Yes, I have, mister Benson. In
- 6:42my own way, of course. Do you know that another one of our
- 6:45clients had his car stolen last night? Yes? I know, and I'm
- 6:47sorry, and I couldn't do anything last night. Now I can. Well
- 6:51that's something. At least I need three cars from you, pretty new cars,
- 6:56three new cars. But for that I can't tell you. I give
- 6:59me the three cars, and I think I can promise you action in a
- 7:01hurry. Well, all right, all right, I guess it can be
- 7:06arranged. I'll have them here this afternoon. But frankly, mister Carter,
- 7:11we want results. Well, Nick, I just left the last of those
- 7:25three cars at seventh in Washington Streets. Now, maybe you'll break down,
- 7:29tell me what this is all about. Why, Patsy, I thought you'd
- 7:30figure the whole thing out right Now, All I know is that you had
- 7:34me pat those three beautiful new cars in different parts of the city, and
- 7:38they're supposed to be bait for this car stealing gang. But why don't you
- 7:42haven't put them someplace where you can watch them? But I am watching the
- 7:45Oh are you kidding? I am not under the back seat of each of
- 7:48those cars. I've hidden one of those little radios you said. I was
- 7:51playing with what a really small compact sanding sets with an individual signal and a
- 7:57two mile range. That shan Oh, I think i'd don if anybody steals
- 8:01one of those cars, the radio is sending out a signal automatically. With
- 8:05the direction finder in my car, we can follow the stolen car straight to
- 8:09the gang's hideout. Oh, that gang will just pick up one of those
- 8:13cars they have. How do you like that for service? Wait, it's
- 8:18the signal from the Royal coop you parked at the corner of six and Johnson.
- 8:20We've got to get there best. It must be straight ahead of us.
- 8:33Nack. The signal's been getting louder ever since we turned that last corner.
- 8:37Yeah, sieve, they're taking it out. This roarer must be headed
- 8:41for some place in the suburbs. There's nothing inside except that big truck up
- 8:46ahead. Why don't you pass it? Because that wouldn't do any good.
- 8:50What do you mean? I mean the stolen cars on that truck under that
- 8:54big canvas. I never thought of that, never to die, not until
- 8:58I saw that the truck was the only thing into side. A favorite way
- 9:01of transporting a stolen car, isn't I say? It is a freight train
- 9:05coming. Yeah, I better stop back here. I don't want to get
- 9:09too close to the truck, and I sneak. The truck's not stopping.
- 9:13They struck. They're going to try to get across the tracks in front of
- 9:15the train. Can't probably meet it. We can't look at the length of
- 9:24this train. It must be a mile long. Worse than that is stopping.
- 9:30How do you like that? I don't. But if darn thing gets
- 9:33out of my way, that truck will be's the far away. We won't
- 9:35be able to pick up the radio. Say oh, certainly looks as all
- 9:39lucks against us. Well. So Nick lost the first round in his battle
- 9:50to break up the ring of car thieves. But he's lost more than that.
- 9:54He's lost a brand new car lean to him to use his dait.
- 9:56We'll see what that leads to in just the moment. All back to the
- 10:07case of the yocrative Rex. Today is Nick Carter Adventure, brought to you
- 10:11by old Dutch Glinter. It was the following afternoon and Nick and Patsy and
- 10:16Nick's car are cruising around town hoping to pick up a signal from one of
- 10:20the other cars they planted as bait. I haven't been for that gone freight
- 10:26train. I might have the gang rounded up by now. Nick. Listen,
- 10:30sir, that's the signal from the radio and the Royal Coop that they
- 10:33got away with. Yeah, it's getting louder. How is getting saved again?
- 10:41And did you notice that it got louder just as that wine colored Royal
- 10:43Coop ahead passed us. Hey, that's the car that was stolen from us.
- 10:48It's not getting away from us again. What, of course are the
- 10:52curb? Hey, hollo, what's the big idea? Stopped? Why not?
- 11:01Stupid? What ou say? What's going on here? You tried to
- 11:07wreck me? Oh I didn't. I just want to stop you. That's
- 11:11a stolen car. You're driving tolen car. You're crazy? I just an
- 11:16hour a co paye podcast for it. Maybe, but it's still a stolen
- 11:18car. Oh see here I'm judged pears. And then a few things that
- 11:22you presen. My name is Carter, Nick Carter. Oh oh sure I've
- 11:26heard of you was the Carter. But I still say I bought this car
- 11:30legally. Look here's a little sale mm hmm, sold you by a man
- 11:35named Elmer Eustace address three one nine two Grand Avenue. They will sales an
- 11:41order all right. The engine number gives us wrong, but it can't be
- 11:46wrong. Look at the number on the engine and see for yourself. Thanks,
- 11:48Judger, will this is a car all right? I recognize that tiny
- 11:52scratch on the door. The engine number, Will flinches. Let me get
- 12:01let's see D four seven seven seven eight nine. Well that's the number on
- 12:07the bill of sale. But that's not the motor number of the coup that
- 12:11was stolen from us. No it's not. It's obviously the real motor number
- 12:16hasn't been tampered with him anyway. Well are you satisfied? Yes, I
- 12:20yes, I've made a mistake. Jud I told you so. Next time,
- 12:26better make sure of your fist. Nick. You let him go.
- 12:31You didn't even look to see whether the radio was under the back seat.
- 12:35Didn't have to, Patsy. That's the car that was stolen, all right,
- 12:37even if the engine number is different. Well, Betsy, listen,
- 12:41go down to the Motor Vehicle Bureau and find out who originally registered a Royal
- 12:45coup with motor number D four seven seven seven eight nine. Right, where
- 12:50are you going? I want to drop in on mister Elmer Eustace, the
- 12:52man who sold that car to Judge Pearson. Yes, I'd like to speak
- 13:16to mister Eustace. Is he in, Yes, she's in, young man.
- 13:20I don't know if he'll speak to you. I think you will.
- 13:22Maa come in please, Oh no, young man. Elma doesn't live here.
- 13:26He lives next door, next door, Yes, right there on the
- 13:30other side of the fence. But that's a cemetery. Yes, Elma's been
- 13:35dead twenty years. So Elma Eustace has been dead for twenty years. Yes,
- 13:50Patsy's very dead. Why did you find out if the Motor Vehicle Bureau?
- 13:54Oh, well, Nikaya asked about was registered several days ago by a
- 13:56man named Robert Anderson. He lives only a few blocks here or so on
- 14:00the way back I stopped him to see him. What did he say?
- 14:03Well, his story, Nick, is that he bought a wine colored Royal
- 14:05coop and wrecked at the same day. He gave the wrestler man named Frank
- 14:09Dyllan to pay for damage the car did to Dylan's bomb when it ran off
- 14:11the road. The car, I mean, not the barn that backs up
- 14:16very completely. Patsy, how would you like to join me in a nice
- 14:20cacophonic auto accident? Oh's that, Betsy. I guess my football helmet son's
- 14:37had enough. Nick, I feel just like a movie stunt girl who was
- 14:39about to be pushed off a cliff. Oh, that's all tight, It
- 14:43won't be any danger, you hope. Well, looks Dylan's barn just around
- 14:46the turn down at the bottom of the hill. I can see it in
- 14:48the headlights. Nick, My hunch is right. Dylan spotted the gang.
- 14:52My bed is that he's responsible for the accident young Anderson had and somehow or
- 14:58other got Anderson to turn the wreck car over him. And if you think
- 15:00the gang also stole the Royal crew we used as bait, it was the
- 15:03same model as Anders, Patsy, only they took the engine out of Anderson's
- 15:07car and put it in the stolen car. Why would they do that Because
- 15:09they got the bail of sales from Anderson, and when they put the engine
- 15:13from his car into the car they stole, the whole deal looked very legal.
- 15:16So that's how they disguise the cars they stole. That's how. And
- 15:20now we're going to have the same current of accident Anderson. Okay, Patsy,
- 15:24here's the curve. Hold tight. You are right, Patsy, whole
- 15:35things considered. Quick, give me your helmet. I'll put it in a
- 15:39suitcase of mine. Now they're on a site. Hey, you pretend to
- 15:46be unconscious. Psy. I'm going to pick you up and carry you.
- 15:50I could learn to like this. Hey, you too. Don't try to
- 15:52get away. What do you mean get away? We've had an accident,
- 15:56Yeah you have. Darner knocked my barn down. Must have gone thousands one
- 16:00of the damage to I'll huddle for the damage. But this lady's hurt.
- 16:03You gotta get on the house and call a doctor. What about my ball,
- 16:04I'll take care of that later. You can keep the car for security.
- 16:07Well, all right, come on this way, all right, I'm
- 16:11following you and keep on following them cutting. This is a gun against your
- 16:18banks, so no funny business. All right, gotta put the damon a
- 16:33sofa and sit down here with her. Anything you say, tell you what?
- 16:40Oh, make yourself comfortable. Cut in. Thanks, I'm calling the
- 16:47big boss. Ask about your funeral. See that there're lots of flowers.
- 16:51Why you won't be smelling them up for arsts, eh Williams. Listen,
- 17:02Rocky and mere Rid Dillens. You're giving him his payoff tonight when he walks
- 17:07Nick Cotton. Yeah, tried to pull a fake accident, but me and
- 17:11Rocky got the drop on him. Now, look, boys, you've got
- 17:14an idea. He's already wrecked his cars. He said, why don't we
- 17:18put it on the truck and haul it out to the old Morgan for it's
- 17:22about sixty feet. See me sure we can put him in the girl in
- 17:26the car and push it off. Ye're going to kill easy bets you would
- 17:30not do yet, that's the idea. Yeah, just a nice clean accident.
- 17:36Okay, goodbye, Well Caddy, you can pick up the Dame again.
- 17:41The four of us are going for a little ride, but only me
- 17:47and Rocky are coming back. Gee, gott it. You should make up
- 18:03pretty picture standing there on the edge of the quarry holding that dame in your
- 18:07bund. Rocky, give me your hand, thank you. Yeah, okay,
- 18:11I'll be right with if I've got the car balance right on the edge
- 18:12of the quarry. Means they won't have to push the very car. And
- 18:15once they get us inside, I see how ian I swim? Are you
- 18:22the quarry is almost build with water. You can't see it rippling the home.
- 18:26Yes, it's only about twenty feet from the top. Okay, we
- 18:30were to put a fast one on these thugs. Okay, got it.
- 18:32We're all set now if you that's what you think? It's hot? Hey,
- 18:37you can't They jumped into the quarry, all right, I do so.
- 18:44I think it easy enough. Make as little noise as you can.
- 18:45They can't see us, might judge whatever you are by the sound. I
- 18:49think you're a white guy. Don't get cut it. Let's see how you
- 18:52like this and here someone Well for the moment, at least, Nick and
- 19:11Patsy have beaten the crooks at their own game. But they're not out of
- 19:14danger yet. We'll see what happens next. In just a moment. Now
- 19:23back to the case of the Yucrative Wrecks. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought
- 19:30to you by All Dutch Clinchers. We pick up our story with Nick and
- 19:33Patsy in the water in the old quarry ace and rockies standing at the edge
- 19:37of the quarry are shooting at them through the darkness. They stopped firing and
- 19:48they haven't en us. That doesn't mean they won't stay close to the edge
- 19:52of the quarry right over list as they move to the other side. I
- 19:56suppose they do. I guess is that they have no more bullets. Shots
- 20:00that were twelve to six apiece. Maybe they're reloading. Sneak your rock here
- 20:04as well. You can pull ourselves up on a tree. Yeah, you'll
- 20:12never get out of there alive. What are you going to do? Shoot
- 20:17us with empty guns? That's why you're wrong. I always carry a little
- 20:22spar and a waterproof case. Quit your kid, You call this kidding?
- 20:30Yeah, it's kind Yeah, but don't worry. Doesn't never get out of
- 20:36there and don't drown like rats in a track because he right, Maybe we
- 20:41can't get out of here, Maybe not like we're going to try. Well,
- 20:55Patsy. That wasn't so bad, was it? Now that it's all
- 20:57over, It wasn't so bad before. For a few minutes, Nick,
- 21:00I thought we'd never lived. To get back here to the office. Wow,
- 21:03we made it. And that's all that comes. Dry clothes held too.
- 21:07I'm gonna have these extra things here at the office. What now me?
- 21:12We've got an important phone call of me. As soon as I'm through,
- 21:15I'm got going again. Hello Hello, Mss Collins, this is Nick
- 21:33Carter. Oh, yes, I have an important message for mister Benson.
- 21:37He doesn't seem to be home. If you take it down and try to
- 21:38look at him, why of course, what is a message? Just tell
- 21:41him that I've identified three of the gang and have a police drag net out
- 21:45for them. Hope to have them in custody by morning. Mister Benson will
- 21:48be delighted to hear that, Miss Carter. I'll see that he gets a
- 21:49message as soon as possible. Thanks very much, Miss Collins. Good night.
- 21:55Ah what's that? And now I'm going off to find that gang's headquarter.
- 22:00Find their headquarters. But Nick, they didn't give us a single clue
- 22:03to its location. Oh yes, they did, just one clue and I'm
- 22:07going to build that clue into a whole court full of convictions. But Nick
- 22:11used to hear by the phone. What I call I'm running with starts at
- 22:14Matheson and every man I can get his hands on. Look, you two,
- 22:27the boss will be here in a minute, and I'm doing the talking.
- 22:30You understand, Yes, sure we understand, And it's a boss.
- 22:37Now open the door, Rockie, sure coming boss. We're all here like
- 22:45you wanted close that door. Yes, shut fools, bunglers. What do
- 22:52you mean? So you got rid of Nick Carter? Did you shure?
- 22:55We did? And I suppose it was his ghost that just telephoned me,
- 22:57just just telephoned you, Nick car He did, and he's identified all three
- 23:02of your fudd It ain't possible you didn't kill him, So now I gotta
- 23:06kill you all of you. Listen, you fail, and you put me
- 23:10in a dangerous position if I let your list You know what where did he
- 23:15come? Pretty good act you put on this morning when I came out to
- 23:17question you, and I didn't stay food. You won't show the first man
- 23:22that moved I got that gun, missus take it over this way. Look,
- 23:32how did you find us? You find out at first. If Missus
- 23:36Eustace doesn't mind, I'd like to remove her. Wait, this is going
- 23:41to be quite a shock to mister Benson, isn't it. Miss Collins?
- 23:44Hey, what's this Miss Collins stuff? Yeah? I thought she was Missus
- 23:48Eustace. You see, boys, By wearing this gray wig, Miss Collins
- 23:52became Missus Eustace. At the time Miss Collins gets out of jail, she
- 23:57won't have to wear a wig. Her own hair will be gray. Well,
- 24:11I'll be darned. So Miss Collins was the mastermind of the car stealing
- 24:15ring. That's right, Patsy at Benson's secretary. Working right there in the
- 24:18office of the Underwriter's Association, she was in a perfect position to furnish the
- 24:22others with the information that made the rack at his success. So why did
- 24:25she play the part of Alma Houstace's poor old widow. Oh there was a
- 24:27smoke screen to hired her real identity from the gang. Ah. I imagine
- 24:33her original plan was that when the racket petered out, Missus Eustace would just
- 24:37vanished. Since none of the gang knew that she was also Miss Collins,
- 24:41they wouldn't be able to blackmail her later or infiplate her in any way.
- 24:45But I still don't see what made you suspect her. At one clue,
- 24:48I mentioned Betsy one acepone from Dylan's place. I counted the clicks as he
- 24:52dialed. Three three, three four four four was a number he called.
- 24:57That was the same number Benson that previously gave me in case I ever had
- 25:00to call Ms. Collins. That was all I needed to know, Jee,
- 25:03But it sounds simple when you explain it now. Perhaps you'll tell me
- 25:08how you found the hideout. Oh that was easy, you see. When
- 25:11I phoned Miss Collins and in that way let her know you and I had
- 25:15escaped, I knew she'd head straight for the hideout. Why, of course,
- 25:18Well I got to the place she lives just before she left. Oh
- 25:21but how'd you find out where she lived? Had Maddy trace her phone number?
- 25:23He gave me her address this morning? And where did she live,
- 25:26nick Wright? Smack across the street from where Missus Eustace lives. Well,
- 25:30what do you know? From there on? It was a cinch. I
- 25:33saw her when she came out of the house, fixed up at Missus Eustace,
- 25:37and then followed hers straight to the hideout any more questions. Hmm,
- 25:41oh, yes, teacher who owns that spiffy youth of dan parked outside of
- 25:45the curb that well pats it. It just happens that was on order for
- 25:51miss Collins, but since she won't be needing a car for ten years or
- 25:55so, the underwriters brought it and insisted on presenting it to me. Oh
- 26:00that's wonderful, miss b May I give you a ride home by mister car.
- 26:04It will be a pleasure. It isn't every day that a poor working
- 26:08girl it's going to skinned rider for my car. Nick, honest, break
- 26:18here, I got a brand new car and don't even get a chance to
- 26:22blow the horn every week. At this time, two great names are going
- 26:29welcome back. Well an interesting scheme. I won't say it was clever,
- 26:34just because this time of scheme, it just seems like there is so much
- 26:40that could go wrong. It really depends on people having car accidents that leave
- 26:48the engines attack, and also on everybody who has an accident been able to
- 26:52be a snow particular, you know, in particularly you're doing this out there
- 26:56on a rural road, is what I'm gamming from the description. But there
- 27:00were also some good twists and perilous situations For Nick Carter. I think he's
- 27:07the only one of our detectives who carries a gun in a water water safe
- 27:12pouch just in case. When Nick Carter says he's got something, no matter
- 27:18how weird it is for most other detectives, I just tend to believe him
- 27:22because usually he does. Sometimes he's bluffing. But Carter, there's a reason
- 27:27he's able to stay around and keep breathing despite being a very famous detective,
- 27:33which, when you think about, is a pretty dangerous thing to be.
- 27:37All right, Well on to listener comments and feedback, and I have an
- 27:40email from Randy's who says I have a suggestion. I would think it would
- 27:45be neat if you and Andrew if Needa did an audio montage of various Virginia
- 27:49Grade voices. Unless she's the only female character in the show, I can
- 27:53never be sure which person she voice, beyond the fact that I don't always
- 27:57know which character she voiced, and if I could, I would never be
- 28:00able to remember the voices with great detail from show to show, week to
- 28:04week. I know you once mentioned people used to say she could do many
- 28:07voices from age eight to eighty, So hearing several altogether I think would be
- 28:12interesting would help those of us who aren't greatly educated on OTR shows to hear
- 28:18how impressive her talents really were improved right the eight to eighty statement, thank
- 28:23you for your time, hard work and dedication to your shows. We fans
- 28:29greatly appreciate it. Well. Thanks for the email at Randy, and it's
- 28:33a good suggestion. My big problem would be some voices I have to actually
- 28:41think about whether Virginia Greg did it or not. I would foresee that being
- 28:45a somewhat tedious project, not just saying it wouldn't be worth doing, but
- 28:51just probably not something I'll do right away. It might be possible, too,
- 28:55with a larger group of fans to kind of get a sampling of her
- 29:00who know her voice and know her shows, because we don't usually have cast
- 29:04list. The ones were most sure Virginia Greg did it are the ones,
- 29:08like you said, where she's the only female voice, and you notice she
- 29:12did two or three different roles, And certainly there are times that you can
- 29:17kind of tell the quality of her voice from another, despite the way she
- 29:22disguises it and the way a character's voice differs but it'd be a big project
- 29:26and interesting one, so I'll keep that under consideration. Thanks for the email,
- 29:32Randy Well. We will be back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny doll
- 29:34Our. Next Thursday, join us for another episode of Nick Carter. I
