- 0:40>>Hello, everyone.
- 0:42I'm John Slavney here
- 0:44to introduce the 11th episode of this podcast,
- 0:46the hard edged crime thriller "Dead for a Dollar."
- 0:49We open our radio play in a dim downtown bar
- 0:52where two men nursing the same grudge plot to kill the man
- 0:55who wronged them both, the wealthy financier Jason Grant.
- 0:58On a barstool is Wynn Thomas, a Korean War vet.
- 1:01More than 20 years ago in the retreat
- 1:03to Busan, Grant left Wynn's brother to bleed to death,
- 1:07an act of cowardice he has never answered for.
- 1:09Seated next to him is Harry Toland,
- 1:11Grant's former business partner and a man with his own reasons
- 1:14to want Grant dead.
- 1:16Grant robbed him of his business, his money,
- 1:18his wife, and his dignity.
- 1:20Are these men brought together by a common enemy truly serious?
- 1:23Or are they just talking,
- 1:25plotting a murder they'll forget by closing time.
- 1:27And if they are serious,
- 1:29do they have the smarts and the guts to pull it off?
- 1:30These are the questions
- 1:31this gritty thriller turns on.
- 1:33In the roles of the dithering plotters
- 1:35are Paul Hecht as Wynn and Joe Julian as Harry.
- 1:38Hecht was one of the first actors
- 1:40Himan Brown brought on board for the Radio Mystery Theater,
- 1:43likely at the suggestion of heck's friend Marian Seldes.
- 1:46By then, he was already a seasoned stage actor,
- 1:48earning a Tony nomination for his performance
- 1:50in the original Broadway production
- 1:53of Tom Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead."
- 1:55Not long before this recording,
- 1:57he had completed the Broadway run of the revival
- 2:00of Pirandello's "Emperor Henry IV."
- 2:02Joe Julian plays the co-conspirator Harry,
- 2:04a character who matches Wynn's thirst for revenge
- 2:07if not his capacity to quench that thirst.
- 2:09Julian had worked with luminaries
- 2:11like Orson Welles and Norman Corwin
- 2:13in the heyday of network radio.
- 2:15Also in the large cast is Tony Roberts as Grant's son,
- 2:18a young man who's got it bad for his father's
- 2:20secretary and mistress,
- 2:22Kay Woodhouse, a sharp operator who drives a Fiat
- 2:25and has no illusions about the bargain
- 2:26she's made by betting her boss. Joan Lovejoy,
- 2:29plays the part with an air of wry resignation.
- 2:32Rounding out the principals is radio legend Mary Jane Higby
- 2:35as Grant's estranged wife,
- 2:37once married to Harry and now about to divorce Grant.
- 2:39Higby had acted in more than 30 episodes of the original series
- 2:42and wrote scripts for five others.
- 2:44Enjoying his role as the man
- 2:46no one really likes, Jason Grant,
- 2:48is veteran character actor George Petrie,
- 2:50here in his second appearance of 1974.
- 2:53You just heard him as the baffled groom
- 2:54in "A Ring of Roses."
- 2:56Petrie would perform in 17 additional "RMT"
- 2:59episodes in 1974 and '75.
- 3:02A reliable presence in the early years of
- 3:04"Mystery Theater's" run.
- 3:05The script is by Murray Burnett.
- 3:08Decades earlier, Burnett had co-written the play
- 3:10that became the legendary 1942 Michael Curtiz
- 3:13film "Casablanca."
- 3:14He sold the rights,
- 3:16but spent his later years in a losing legal battle
- 3:18to regain control of the characters.
- 3:20While it's not Rick's Cafe American,
- 3:22let's now drop in at that dimly lit bar filled
- 3:25with cigarette smoke and the smell of stale beer,
- 3:28and listen in on Wynn and his Confederate Harry
- 3:30as they plot a murder.
- 3:32Recorded on Wednesday, November 28th, 1973.
- 3:35"Dead for a Dollar" was first broadcast on January 16th, 1974.
- 3:40Pull up a stool and please keep your voice down.

- 4:05♪♪
- 4:08Come in.
- 4:10♪♪
- 4:13Welcome.
- 4:15I'm E.G. Marshall.
- 4:17Welcome to the sounds of suspense.
- 4:20The fear you can hear.
- 4:23Vengeance is traditionally supposed to be the province
- 4:26of the Lord, but too often individuals
- 4:29decide that they will take it
- 4:31upon themselves to mete out punishment to those
- 4:34who may richly deserve it.
- 4:36The results are almost always devastating.
- 4:39As witness.
- 4:41>>You ask me how we're going to kill him, Harry.
- 4:45We're going to shoot Jason Grant in the belly.
- 4:50>>Is that painful?
- 4:52>>Very. You don't like the idea?
- 4:57>>I like it so much it scares me.
- 5:00>>Then it's a deal. You're with me?
- 5:03>>I'm with you all the way.
- 5:06Have you thought about a place
- 5:08and a time for the -- > The execution?
- 5:11>>Yeah. >>You bet.
- 5:14♪♪
- 5:21>>Our mystery drama "Dead for a Dollar"
- 5:24was written especially for the Mystery Theater
- 5:26by Murray Burnett and stars Paul Hecht.
- 5:30I'll return shortly with act one.
- 5:33♪♪
- 5:39♪♪
- 5:44♪♪
- 5:50In today's world,
- 5:52the golden key to success is too often,
- 5:55unfortunately attained through absolute ruthlessness
- 5:59and utter disregard of ethics, morality,
- 6:02and the rights of others.
- 6:04Jason Grant was a symbol of such success,
- 6:07a multi-millionaire
- 6:09and a power in the world of international finance.
- 6:12Grant sat on a golden throne,
- 6:14built on the ruin of many lives and many hopes.
- 6:17Along with his millions,
- 6:19Jason Grant had earned the hatred of more people
- 6:22than he bothered to remember.
- 6:24This day, two men in whom
- 6:26the fires of hatred burned sat in a bar.
- 6:33>>Another toast, Harry? >>Why not.
- 6:36>>To Jason Grant. [ Glass tinks ]
- 6:38May his soul rot in hell.
- 6:41>>Amen. >>How long has it been, Harry?
- 6:47>>How long has what been?
- 6:49>>How long have we been meeting in this bar
- 6:51and drinking the same stupid toast.
- 6:53>>Let's see. The Denise divorced me in '69.
- 6:58I ran into you here about a year later,
- 7:00so I'd say two years, give or take a couple of months.
- 7:04>>[ Chuckles ]
- 7:07What do you think Jason would say if he heard us?
- 7:11>>I don't follow you, Wynn.
- 7:12>>Here we are,
- 7:14two men acting like a like a couple of sniveling schoolkids.
- 7:16>>What do you suggest we do?
- 7:19>>Kill him. >>Just like that?
- 7:22>>Kill him slowly and as painfully as possible.
- 7:25I want to hear Jason Grant screaming and begging for mercy,
- 7:29just like my brother screamed
- 7:31when Jason left him to bleed to death on the road to Busan
- 7:33while he bugged out to save his own skin.
- 7:35>>We'd be sure and get caught.
- 7:37>>So what?
- 7:39>>So what? >>Yeah. So what?
- 7:42We'll just tell our story to a jury.
- 7:43We can --
- 7:45>>That still doesn't give us the right to kill.
- 7:46>>Look, does Jason Grant deserve to die
- 7:48for what he did to you?
- 7:50It wasn't only breaking up your marriage.
- 7:52You and Jason were partners, and he not only stole Denise,
- 7:56but the business you built up for 11 years.
- 7:58>>I know he did. >>So what did you do about it?
- 8:00>>Wynn, get off my back!
- 8:02If you're so dead set on killing him,
- 8:04why don't you go ahead and do it?
- 8:07>>Because I need you, Harry. >>For what?
- 8:10>>Look, Harry, I'm willing to go to prison,
- 8:12but I don't see any sense in walking in
- 8:14if there's a way of staying out.
- 8:16>>How am I going along with you
- 8:17help keep you out of jail?
- 8:19>>We'll give each other an alibi.
- 8:21We'll swear we were together when Grant is killed.
- 8:26>>You thought about how we'd do it?
- 8:27>>I have.
- 8:30You see this? >>Hey, put that away.
- 8:33>>It's so uptight. It's a gun I picked up in Korea.
- 8:37I figured I might have a use for it someday, so, uh,
- 8:40so I kept it in good condition. >>Put it away.
- 8:42>>Harry, you asked me how we were going to do it.
- 8:46We're gonna shoot him in the belly.
- 8:51>>It's painful? >>Very.
- 8:55You don't like the idea?
- 8:58>>I like it so much it hurts.
- 9:02>>Then it's a deal. You're with me?
- 9:07>>I'm with you all the way.
- 9:10Have you thought about a place and a time for the --
- 9:14the, uh... >>The execution?
- 9:17>>Yeah. >>You bet.
- 9:19But, Harry, I need you to check some facts for me.
- 9:22>>If I can. >>Now, you once told me
- 9:24that Jason worked late every Monday night.
- 9:27>>That's right. >>He still does it.
- 9:29>>I'm not sure, but I guess he does.
- 9:31>>That's when we're gonna do it, late on a Monday night.
- 9:33He'll be alone.
- 9:35I'll walk in, shoot him and walk out.
- 9:38>>Off him?
- 9:40I thought you really had something worked out.
- 9:41You can't go into the building at night
- 9:43without signing in and signing out.
- 9:45>>Who said anything about getting in at night?
- 9:46>>You just -- >>Listen.
- 9:48I walk into the building about 5:00 carrying one
- 9:50of those -- those toolboxes a telephone repairman have.
- 9:52>>Yeah. >>There won't be any tools
- 9:53in it, just work clothes.
- 9:55I'll hang around till about 8 or 9
- 9:57when I'm sure Jason will be alone.
- 9:59>>There are cleaning women. >>Sure.
- 10:00But by that time, I'll have changed clothes.
- 10:04All you have to do is look like you're --
- 10:06you're working or going somewhere to do something.
- 10:09They won't bother you.
- 10:10>>How will you get out?
- 10:12>>After I leave him bleeding the way he left Mike in Korea,
- 10:17I'll just walk out the door,
- 10:21take the elevator, walk by the night guard.
- 10:25>>It might. It just might work. >>It will work.
- 10:30And all you have to do is say
- 10:32that we had dinner together at your place.
- 10:34>>No. >>No? I thought you --
- 10:37>>I said I was with you all the way.
- 10:38That means I could also pull the trigger.
- 10:40We'll toss a coin to see who does the killing.
- 10:43The alibi will work just as well at your place.
- 10:46>>Do you know how to use a gun? >>What's to know?
- 10:49Hey, what about the sound of the shots?
- 10:51>>No sweat. I got a silencer. >>Okay.
- 10:53Let's toss.
- 10:55>>You're sure?
- 10:57>>Dead sure.
- 10:59[ Train whistle blaring ]
- 11:01♪♪
- 11:05[ Telephone rings ]
- 11:09>>Jason Grant's office.
- 11:11>>Mr. Grant, please.
- 11:12>>May I ask who's calling?
- 11:14>>Tell him it's an old friend.
- 11:16>>Well, I'm afraid that isn't --
- 11:18>>Tell him it's his former partner, Harry Tolan.
- 11:21>>Hold on a moment, please. >>Yes.
- 11:25>>Harry Tolan. >>Harry Tolan?
- 11:29[ Chuckles ] Somebody's putting you on, Kay.
- 11:31>>Maybe.
- 11:32I've never met Harry,
- 11:34but he sounds as he would sound, from what you've told me.
- 11:37>>Have I ever told you you're bright as well as beautiful?
- 11:42>>I think maybe once. Do you want to talk to him?
- 11:44>>Why not?
- 11:46He must be really desperate to call me.
- 11:49I'll enjoy listening to him sweat.
- 11:51>>Your pleasure is my only desire, sir.
- 11:53>>[ Chuckles ] >>I think you've proved that.
- 11:57>>Thank you, Mr. Grant. Go ahead, Mr. Tolan.
- 12:01>>Jason?
- 12:02>>Yes, Harry. What can I do for you?
- 12:05>>You might ask what I can do for you this time, Jason.
- 12:08>>That will be the day. >>It is the day.
- 12:12I strongly suggest that you see me.
- 12:13>>You never strongly suggested anything.
- 12:17I'm all tied up, so you'd better let me hear it now.
- 12:20>>It's face-to-face, Jason, or it's goodbye.
- 12:22>>Goodbye.
- 12:24>>So long. >>Uh, hold the phone.
- 12:26Do you, um, Do you have a number
- 12:28where I can reach you if I get a break in my schedule?
- 12:31>>I do indeed, Jason.
- 12:34♪♪
- 12:40[Door closes]
- 12:41>>Jason, that secretary of yours is something else.
- 12:45>>You of all people.
- 12:47Harry, ought to know that I have very good taste in women.
- 12:49>>Yes, I know.
- 12:50>>What have you got in that toolbox?
- 12:53Don't tell me you're now a mechanic.
- 12:55>>All in good time, Jason.
- 12:57>>You had something to tell me?
- 13:00>>Yes. >>Well, I don't have much time.
- 13:02>>You know the saying, if you can't lick 'em, join 'em.
- 13:04>>Come on.
- 13:06>>I've decided to join you, Jason.
- 13:08To do business your way.
- 13:09>>[ Laughs ] You wouldn't know how.
- 13:13>>Well, how's this for a starter?
- 13:15Before I tell you what you must hear.
- 13:17I want a certified check for $50,000.
- 13:21When I finished, I want another 50.
- 13:24>>And you know me well enough to realize
- 13:26that I'm not going to give you $50,000 just
- 13:29because you asked for it. >>Not even to save your life?
- 13:33>>Are you trying to blackmail me, Harry?
- 13:35>>I'm trying to do you a favor.
- 13:37Your life should be worth at least $100,000.
- 13:40>>You're serious?
- 13:42>>You think anything else in the world
- 13:43would have brought me to your office?
- 13:45>>And before I agree, answer one question.
- 13:49Do you know who's going to kill me?
- 13:52>>I do.
- 13:53>>Who?
- 13:54>>Me.
- 13:56You see, the coin came up tails.
- 13:59[ Dramatic music plays ]
- 14:01♪♪
- 14:05>>The check will be here any minute.
- 14:07I suppose you start telling me about it.
- 14:09>>Suppose we wait for the check.
- 14:11>>Mm. You have changed. >>Here's the check.
- 14:14Certified as requested.
- 14:15>>Thank you, Kay.
- 14:17>>Not at all.
- 14:19>>Here you are, Harry. Now, let's have the story.
- 14:22>>You remember Wynn Thomas?
- 14:24>>Who? >>Wynn Thomas.
- 14:26You served in Korea with him and his brother.
- 14:29>>Oh. Yes. Yes, I remember him.
- 14:31>>He's never forgiven you for running off
- 14:32and leaving his brother to die.
- 14:34>>He's a damn fool. The kid would have died anyway.
- 14:37I had my own neck to save.
- 14:38>>He doesn't agree with you.
- 14:40>>Well, this isn't worth $50,000.
- 14:42>>And how about this?
- 14:44>>Put that gun down. >>It's Wynn's gun.
- 14:48We tossed a coin to see who was going to use it on you.
- 14:52>>You're crazy.
- 14:54You're lying.
- 14:55>>Am I?
- 14:57You asked me about the toolbox I'm carrying.
- 14:58If you care to look in it,
- 15:00you'll find a repairman's uniform.
- 15:03I'm supposed to stay here tonight until you're alone.
- 15:05You still work late on Mondays, don't you, Jason?
- 15:06>>Yes.
- 15:08>>And I'm supposed to come in here
- 15:09and shoot you with a silencer
- 15:10you'll also find in the toolbox.
- 15:12>>You'd never get away with it.
- 15:13>>Maybe not,
- 15:15but Wynn's waiting at home right now,
- 15:16and he'll swear that we had dinner together.
- 15:19Now, how about the other 50? >>[ Laughs ]
- 15:23You've got about as much chance of getting that
- 15:25as you have of cashing the check I just gave you.
- 15:27>>What? >>I'll try it.
- 15:29>>I-It's certified. >>Not by the bank.
- 15:33We have a stamp here which looks authentic.
- 15:36Did you think you could really put something over on me.
- 15:39Yes, I see by your stupid face you did.
- 15:43Now get out of here before I call the police.
- 15:47>>They'll never believe you.
- 15:49I'll tell 'em. >>You'll tell them what?
- 15:50You see this? This is a tape recorder.
- 15:53Every word you said is right here on tape.
- 15:56Now, what do you think the police will say
- 15:57when they hear it?
- 15:59Your confession, if it's really true and not a con game.
- 16:03Now, put the gun on my desk and get out.
- 16:06>>I thought I could play your own dirty game.
- 16:07But you're right, I can't.
- 16:09But I can still kill you.
- 16:11>>The tape recorder is still on.
- 16:13Would you like to check it?
- 16:15>>No. >>Put the gun down, Harry.
- 16:18That's right. Now beat it.
- 16:20>>I'll kill you, I promise I'll kill you.
- 16:22If I don't, Wynn Thomas will.
- 16:25And that's something you'd better believe.
- 16:27♪♪
- 16:32>>A murder has not been committed.
- 16:35Jason Grant, as you've heard,
- 16:37is an expert at riding roughshod over people.
- 16:41Believe me when I tell you that he was certain he had nothing
- 16:44to fear from Harry Tolan,
- 16:46nor was he too much concerned with Wynn Thomas.
- 16:50We'll learn whether Jason judged his men correctly
- 16:53when I return shortly with act two.
- 16:58>>Like what you're hearing so far?
- 17:00Are you curious about the history behind radio programs
- 17:03just like this one,
- 17:05and the dramatic genius who created them?
- 17:07In the nine part, award-winning documentary
- 17:09"Audio Maverick", we explore the golden age of radio
- 17:13through the life of Himan Brown.
- 17:15You'll hear the history of radio come to life as we travel,
- 17:19from the birth of audio drama to the programs
- 17:21that brought millions of families
- 17:23into their living rooms every night.
- 17:25"Audio Maverick" is available anywhere you get your podcasts.
- 17:28♪♪
- 17:35♪♪
- 17:42>>We've heard the ruthless side of tycoon Jason Grant,
- 17:46but we must also be fair and remember
- 17:49that Jason was a family man with a wife and a son and a mistress.
- 17:57As we continue,
- 17:59Jason Grant is sitting in his office later that same evening.
- 18:03Monday night, the door to his office opens
- 18:07and his beautiful secretary, Kate Woodhouse, enters.
- 18:11>>Finished working?
- 18:12>>No, but come in and close the door.
- 18:14[ Door closes ]
- 18:17Mm. That's quite a gown. >>Thank you, sir.
- 18:22And I do mean you, since you were kind enough to pay for it.
- 18:26>>My pleasure.
- 18:27>>You had me close the door.
- 18:30You expecting someone?
- 18:31>>Just Tony. >>Your son?
- 18:34>>Tony, yes. >>Well, then I'd better get...
- 18:37Hey. What's this? A gun?
- 18:41>>It's Harry Tolan's, he was just here.
- 18:44He was going to kill me. >>You're putting me on.
- 18:48>>No, no, he really was, the fool.
- 18:51He actually thought he could get away
- 18:52with a stupid ploy like that.
- 18:55He had a whole story that I have on tape.
- 18:58>>You ought to put that gun away.
- 19:00>>Oh, no.
- 19:02No, it amuses me to leave it there to remind me
- 19:04how right I was to get rid of him years ago.
- 19:07I only made one mistake.
- 19:09And that was marrying his wife, Denise.
- 19:12>>Well, how about Tony, the son you had with her?
- 19:15[ Gasps ]
- 19:17>>That's to remind you
- 19:19that Tony is something very special to me.
- 19:22>>And that's the last time you'll ever slap me.
- 19:24I'm warning you.
- 19:26>>I hope this is the last time you'll need it.
- 19:27>>And maybe you need a new girl.
- 19:29>>I know exactly what I need, Kay.
- 19:31I need you as my wife.
- 19:34>>Well, maybe you'd better tell that to Denise,
- 19:36your present wife.
- 19:37>>I already have.
- 19:38I've told Denise I'm divorcing her.
- 19:40And I'm telling Tony when he comes here tonight.
- 19:42>>Well, if Tony's coming, I'd better get out of here.
- 19:45We'll go over it late at night.
- 19:46>>Stop talking and come here.
- 19:49>>Yes, Jason.
- 19:51[ Door opens ]
- 19:53>>Excuse me. I didn't - >>Come in, Tony.
- 19:55Come in. It's quite all right.
- 19:57>>It looked a little better than all right to me.
- 20:00That's quite a gown, Kay. >>Thank you.
- 20:04See you later, Jason.
- 20:05>>Right.
- 20:06>>The usual place?
- 20:08>>Of course.
- 20:10[ Door closes ]
- 20:11>>I've got to hand it to you, dad.
- 20:13I've had big eyes for Kay myself.
- 20:15But while I was thinking, I guess you were doing.
- 20:17And, uh, speaking of that,
- 20:20uh, what's that gun doing on your desk?
- 20:23>>Oh, remember Harry Tolan? >>Isn't --
- 20:27wasn't he your partner years ago?
- 20:29And wasn't he married to mother?
- 20:31>>Correct. The gun is his. >>What's it doing here?
- 20:35>>Harry said he was going to use it to kill me.
- 20:38>>What? After all these years? >>Well, he wanted money.
- 20:42He said he'd make some kind of deal with me.
- 20:44I put the whole conversation on tape and kicked him out.
- 20:47>>He sounds like a fool.
- 20:49>>A good description. Now, what I wanted to tell you.
- 20:51>>If it's about the VCM steel deal,
- 20:53I've already taken care of it.
- 20:55They agreed to our terms. >>It's not about the VCM deal.
- 20:58Now, one thing you still have to learn, Tony, is to listen.
- 21:01Remember, people are sending up signals all the time.
- 21:04Now, if you can read them,
- 21:06you'll always be 1 or 2 steps ahead of them.
- 21:07>>What if you don't like the signals?
- 21:09Suppose the signal light is flashing red.
- 21:12>>What is that supposed to mean?
- 21:15>>The signal I see coming up is something about you and Kay.
- 21:19>>Hmm. Right. >>And, mother.
- 21:24>>Right again.
- 21:26>>Well, why can't you play around with Kay?
- 21:28>>You haven't heard what I'm going to say.
- 21:30>>I don't have to. >>No?
- 21:31>>Oh. All right, go ahead.
- 21:35>>I suppose you must have known that for many years,
- 21:37the marriage between your mother
- 21:39and me was a matter of convenience.
- 21:41>>Look, Dad.
- 21:43>>I know how you feel about your mother.
- 21:45And so I wanted you to hear from me first.
- 21:47That we've decided on a divorce.
- 21:51>>You mean you've decided on a divorce.
- 21:54>>You can put it that way if you like,
- 21:56but your mother will never have anything
- 21:58to worry about financially.
- 22:00>>Oh, and you think that'll make mother happy?
- 22:01>>It'll make her rich.
- 22:03>>That's not what she wants. >>It's what I want.
- 22:06>>And that's all that matters.
- 22:07What do you want. What about her?
- 22:10>>I see a quarrel coming.
- 22:12I don't think we should talk about this anymore tonight.
- 22:14>>And that I agree with you. Good night.
- 22:17>>Tony. >>Yes?
- 22:20>>Think over what I've been saying
- 22:22about your mother being well provided for.
- 22:24She'll be fine, I know.
- 22:26I think you'll see it my way tomorrow.
- 22:28>>And if I don't?
- 22:31>>Then you'll see it my way next week.
- 22:34[ Door closes ]
- 22:36♪♪
- 22:40[ Telephone rings ]
- 22:42>>Yeah. >>Wynn.
- 22:43>>Harry, where are you? What happened?
- 22:45I've been -- >>I blew it.
- 22:46>>You what? >>I blew it.
- 22:48>>You mean. You mean Jason Grant
- 22:49still alive? >>Yeah.
- 22:51>>How? >>Well, it's a long story.
- 22:52>>Have you got the gun?
- 22:54>>No. >>Where is it.
- 22:55>>I left it in Jason's office.
- 22:56>>You better get up here right away.
- 22:58>>Okay. As soon as I can grab a cab.
- 22:59>>Listen, if I'm not here,
- 23:01sit down and wait and leave the TV on.
- 23:03You understand? >>Yeah, I got you.
- 23:04>>You better repeat it, Harry.
- 23:06>>If you're not in,
- 23:08I'll wait and watch the TV that you've left on.
- 23:09>>Right.
- 23:11And make sure you know what the show's about.
- 23:12>>But Wynn -- >>Never mind. Get the cab.
- 23:13Goodbye.
- 23:15♪♪
- 23:21♪♪
- 23:24[ Knock on door ]
- 23:27>>Mom?
- 23:28>>Tony
- 23:29>>May I come in?
- 23:31>>Oh, of course, dear.
- 23:32[ Door opens ]
- 23:35>>Mom. >>I thought you were
- 23:36going to be at the office.
- 23:37>>I was. Dad told me.
- 23:41>>Oh. >>I know how you feel, and I --
- 23:43>>I'd rather not talk about it. >>That's what dad said.
- 23:46But somebody has to talk about it.
- 23:48>>Why? >>Because. Well, because you --
- 23:52You don't just throw 18 years of marriage down the drain.
- 23:56>>Oh, you'd be surprised how many people do just that.
- 23:58>>I was surprised.
- 24:01>>Honestly. >>Well, yes, I --
- 24:05I could see that you and dad weren't really getting along,
- 24:08but I thought. >>And you were wrong.
- 24:11>>Do you want it?
- 24:13>>Want what?
- 24:15>>The divorce.
- 24:16>>Of course I want it.
- 24:19You don't think I was very happy living with your father when...
- 24:21>>When what?
- 24:25>>Tony. Now what's happening to us?
- 24:28We've never been uncomfortable with one another.
- 24:31And now?
- 24:32Well, we can't seem to talk straight.
- 24:34>>I can.
- 24:35>>Well, fine. What do you want to say?
- 24:38>>I want to know whether you're really happy
- 24:40about it or whether --
- 24:42whether... >>You see, I said we couldn't.
- 24:47>>Or whether you're just saying that to make me feel better,
- 24:49or whether dad forced you to say it?
- 24:52>>Oh, don't be ridiculous, Tony.
- 24:54How could your father force me to do anything?
- 24:56>>Oh, you know what dad's like.
- 24:57>>Do you, Tony?
- 24:59>>Yes, I do. Please, Mom,
- 25:05I just want to know how you feel about this, this divorce.
- 25:09>>I told you, Tony. I feel fine.
- 25:12Just fine. >>The devil you do.
- 25:17And this is the first time you ever lied to me.
- 25:19♪♪
- 25:27[ Door opens ]
- 25:30>>Who is it? [ Rapid footsteps ]
- 25:32What? Don't be a fool. [ Grunting ]
- 25:36Give me that gun. Give it to me.
- 25:39Don't.
- 25:41Maybe I was wrong the way I handled it.
- 25:43[ Gunshot ]
- 25:44No, please.
- 25:47[ Gunshot ] [ Groans ]
- 25:49[ Gunshot ]
- 25:51[ Gunshot ]
- 25:53[ Gasps softly ]

- 26:06♪♪
- 26:07>>[ Sobbing ]
- 26:10>>I'm sorry, ma'am, but there's just no gentle way
- 26:13to tell a woman her husband's been murdered.
- 26:15>>I'm sorry. I'm hysterical, Officer --
- 26:18>>No, it's Lieutenant, ma'am.
- 26:20Lieutenant Metcalfe. >>Lieutenant.
- 26:24How can I help you? >>Just a few questions.
- 26:27>>But when did it happen?
- 26:29>>As near as the coroner tells us, around 11 p.m.
- 26:33>>How? >>He was shot several times
- 26:36with a revolver.
- 26:40Well, I don't have to ask much about Mr. Grant.
- 26:42Everybody knows about him. I just want to find out
- 26:45if there was anything different about last night.
- 26:48I mean, about him or his actions.
- 26:50>>Oh, no. No, nothing.
- 26:53He usually worked late on Monday evenings.
- 26:56Last night was no exception.
- 26:58>>How many people knew about this Monday night habit of his?
- 27:02>>Just -- Well, just about everyone.
- 27:05It's been in the papers
- 27:07and there have been magazine articles.
- 27:10>>Did he tell you about any special appointments
- 27:12that he might have had last night?
- 27:13>>No.
- 27:14He never discussed business with me, Lieutenant.
- 27:17You might ask his secretary. >>Miss Woodhouse?
- 27:20>>Yes. >>Yeah, that's being handled.
- 27:22Mrs. Grant, murder is a messy business.
- 27:25But I have to ask you this.
- 27:28How did you and Mr. Grant get along?
- 27:31>>Well, how do any married couple
- 27:33who've been with each other
- 27:34for 18 years get along? >>There --
- 27:37there have been rumors, and I'm sorry.
- 27:41>>Yes, we were talking about getting a divorce.
- 27:44>>Whose idea was that?
- 27:46>>Oh, it was mutual, Lieutenant.
- 27:50We'd both gotten tired of being married.
- 27:52>>I see. Is your son in? >>Well,I couldn't tell you.
- 27:54Have you asked the servants?
- 27:56>>Well, they don't seem to know.
- 27:58>>Oh, I'm sorry, but Tony's young and, well, he --
- 28:00he comes and goes as he pleases.
- 28:02>>Where do you think it would please him to go today?
- 28:05>>If he's heard the news?
- 28:08I expect he'll either come home or go to the office.
- 28:11>>Thank you. You've been most cooperative.
- 28:13I won't bother you any more. [ Telephone rings ]
- 28:16>>Hello. >>Mom, are you all right?
- 28:19>>Oh, Tony, where are you?
- 28:22>>At the office.
- 28:23I rushed over as soon as I heard.
- 28:25There are cops all over the place. I didn't believe --
- 28:27>>Excuse me, Mrs. Grant, is that your son?
- 28:29>>Yes, he's at the office.
- 28:31>>Who's that? Who's there? >>A police lieutenant.
- 28:33>>May I speak to him?
- 28:35>>Well. Of course. Just a minute, Tony.
- 28:38>>Mr. Grant. >>Yes.
- 28:40>>I'm Lieutenant Metcalfe.
- 28:42Your mother seems to be in pretty good shape.
- 28:43I'm in charge of the case,
- 28:45and I'd like you to wait for me at your office.
- 28:47I'll be right down.
- 28:49>>But, Mom -- >>I told you she's all right.
- 28:50We sent for a doctor,
- 28:52and you can go home as soon as we've talked.
- 28:55♪♪
- 29:01[ Door closes ]
- 29:02>>Morning, Duffy.
- 29:04>>Morning, Lieutenant. >>Where is he?
- 29:05>>Back in his own office.
- 29:07>>Lab men finished? >>They're packing up now.
- 29:08It's a big job. Blood all over the joint.
- 29:10>>I saw it. Which way The kid's office?
- 29:11>>Down the hall to the left.
- 29:13>>Anyone with him?
- 29:14>>I thought it was okay to leave him alone.
- 29:16>>How did he take it? >>About the way they all do.
- 29:20Except... >>Except?
- 29:22Well, he kept repeating, "I don't believe it.
- 29:24I don't believe it."
- 29:26And, uh, seemed as if he really couldn't believe
- 29:28that his father had been murdered.
- 29:30>>Shock maybe. >>Maybe.
- 29:32But from what I've heard about Jason Grant,
- 29:35he was a prime candidate for murder.
- 29:37>>Oh, okay. Duff, you hang in here.
- 29:39I'll be right back.
- 29:41[ Door opens ]
- 29:43Mr. Grant.
- 29:44>>Who are you? >>Lieutenant Metcalfee.
- 29:46Homicide. I spoke with you on the phone.
- 29:49>>Oh, yes. Come in.
- 29:52>>I'm sorry, but I'm going to need your help.
- 29:55>>I'll do anything I can.
- 29:56I have to make funeral arrangements
- 29:58and take care of mother, but, well, how can I help?
- 30:02>>First, when did you last see your father?
- 30:04>>Last night, about 9:15.
- 30:07>>Anyone with him?
- 30:08>>His secretary, Kay Woodhouse. But she left.
- 30:12>>Did your father mention anything about appointments
- 30:14that he may have had later? >>No.
- 30:17>>Then as far as you know,
- 30:19you left him alone sometime between 9 and 9:30,
- 30:21and he had no appointment scheduled.
- 30:23>>That's right. >>And where did you go?
- 30:25>>Home.
- 30:27>>It's no secret that your father had a lot of enemies.
- 30:29Can you think of anyone who might?
- 30:31>>Look, Lieutenant, it'll come out sometime,
- 30:34so you may as well hear about it now.
- 30:36But first I want to tell you that I still can't believe it.
- 30:40>>Believe what?
- 30:42>>My father's former partner, Harry Tolan,
- 30:45who was also married to my mother before she married dad.
- 30:48Harry was in yesterday and threatened my father with a gun.
- 30:53>>What happened to the gun?
- 30:55>>Now, dad took it from him.
- 30:57It was on his desk when I was there earlier.
- 30:58>>I see.
- 30:59>>And on dad's tape recorder in the desk.
- 31:01You'll find the entire conversation between them.
- 31:03>>Thanks. We'll check it.
- 31:06But I'd like to know what it is that you can't believe.
- 31:08>>I can't believe that Harry Tolan murdered my father.
- 31:12I've known him for years, and he --
- 31:14he just hasn't got the guts to kill a man.
- 31:16♪♪
- 31:23>>Why don't you leave me alone, Lieutenant?
- 31:25I never went back to his office.
- 31:26I didn't kill Jason, and you know it.
- 31:29>>Okay, let's go over it again, Mr. Tolan.
- 31:31You went to Grant's office with the gun.
- 31:34The gun that ballistics says killed him.
- 31:36>>I told you, I left it there.
- 31:37>>You did, and we know you did.
- 31:39At least two witnesses saw it on his desk.
- 31:42And you told him about the plot
- 31:43you and Wynn Thomas had cooked up,
- 31:46you asked money for your information.
- 31:47He laughed at you.
- 31:49>>That's right. >>Fine. So far.
- 31:52And then you went over to Wynn Thomas's apartment
- 31:54to tell him what happened. >>And we watched TV all night.
- 31:57I can tell you the shows that --
- 31:58>>Tolan, you're in big trouble.
- 32:01You're smart enough to realize that.
- 32:03Forget that tired old gag about -- about telling me
- 32:05the plot of TV shows.
- 32:07I want to know if you and Thomas were there all night.
- 32:10>>I told you.
- 32:12>>Now, what did he say to you when you reached his place?
- 32:13>>Hello? >>And then?
- 32:16>>Then he -- he offered me a drink and --
- 32:19>>And? >>And he -- he said something
- 32:20about the show that was on TV.
- 32:22>>Ah, you're a liar. You've been lying all the time.
- 32:23>>I swear.
- 32:25>>You swear? You're gonna swear
- 32:27that you hatched up a plot to kill Grant, muffed it,
- 32:29came back, and you and Thomas talked about what was on TV.
- 32:32Come on, Tolan, get wise and get yourself some help.
- 32:36>>Okay. Okay. Wynn Thomas wasn't there
- 32:40when I got there. He left the TV on.
- 32:43>>When did he get back?
- 32:45>>About midnight. Just about.
- 32:48♪♪
- 32:54>>Wynn Thomas and Harry Tolan had their revenge.
- 32:58Jason Grant is dead.
- 33:02Before the body was quietly buried,
- 33:04the police had arrested Wynn Thomas for first degree murder
- 33:07and named Harry Tolan as an accomplice.
- 33:10The case was closed to the satisfaction
- 33:13of the public and the police.
- 33:15But there may be some surprises
- 33:18when I return shortly with act three.
- 33:22>>Like what you're hearing so far?
- 33:24Are you curious about the history behind radio programs
- 33:27just like this one,
- 33:29and the dramatic genius who created them?
- 33:31In the nine part award-winning documentary
- 33:34"Audio Maverick", we explore the golden age of radio
- 33:37through the life of Himan Brown.
- 33:39You'll hear the history of radio come to life as we travel,
- 33:43from the birth of audio drama to the programs

- 33:58♪♪
- 34:07>>Jason Grant's death made headlines for two days.
- 34:11His funeral made the bottom of page one,
- 34:14and then Grant was just about forgotten.
- 34:17To Wynn Thomas and Harry Toland charged with his murder,
- 34:21Grant was still an important part of their lives.
- 34:24He was also much in the thoughts of his widow, Denise,
- 34:27his son Tony, and in the report of Lieutenant Metcalfe.
- 34:33>>Report from Lieutenant Metcalfe.
- 34:35Homicide.
- 34:3711th precinct on the murder of Jason Grant
- 34:39to the office of the District Attorney.
- 34:42One, an elaborate plot was hatched, then botched.
- 34:48And it will be our contention
- 34:50that Wynn Thomas went to Grant's office to finish it off.
- 34:54Although we can place him at the building
- 34:56at the time of the murder,
- 34:57we cannot put him inside the office.
- 35:01Two, we know the gun was there and the silencer.
- 35:07Why then did Thomas use towels from the men's room
- 35:10to muffle the shots. Three.
- 35:15Why didn't he follow his own plot and change clothes
- 35:18and take the toolbox with him as planned,
- 35:21instead of leaving it for us to find?
- 35:25Four.
- 35:26If Thomas was the killer,
- 35:28why didn't he take the gun with him
- 35:30instead of leaving it for us to find?
- 35:34Five.
- 35:36Ditto the tape recording,
- 35:38which Tolan admits having told Thomas
- 35:40was made earlier that afternoon.
- 35:42♪♪
- 35:52[ Knock on door ]
- 35:53>>Who is it? >>Denise.
- 35:55[ Door opens ]
- 35:56>>Come in.
- 35:58[ Door closes ]
- 36:00>>Is it all right if I sit down?
- 36:03>>You can do anything you want.
- 36:05After all, you own me now.
- 36:07>>That's foolish.
- 36:10>>You put up my bail, didn't you?
- 36:11>>Yes.
- 36:12>>Why?
- 36:13>>I felt guilty. >>Guilty?
- 36:15>>About you.
- 36:17About the way I left you.
- 36:20If it's any consolation to you, Harry.
- 36:22I had about two months of happiness with Jason.
- 36:25The rest was all a bad trip.
- 36:27We were getting a divorce.
- 36:29>>Why didn't you get off?
- 36:31>>I guess I was ashamed to admit to myself
- 36:33or to anyone else that I'd made a mistake.
- 36:36>>Okay.
- 36:38And that's why you put up the bail bond money?
- 36:40>>Partly. >>And the other part?
- 36:43>>Well, I know you, Harry. I lived with you.
- 36:47You're not a murderer.
- 36:49>>I went along with Wynn's idea.
- 36:50>>But you didn't kill Jason.
- 36:53And I couldn't bear the thought of you being in jail.
- 36:55>>What about Wynn?
- 36:56>>I wasn't married to Wynn.
- 36:58>>Neither was I, but --
- 37:00but I've done just as good or as bad a job on him
- 37:04as you did on me.
- 37:05>>I don't understand.
- 37:07>>I told you I went along with the idea,
- 37:09part of which was that we would alibi each other.
- 37:12I tried, but I messed it up.
- 37:15I-I-I let him down.
- 37:18>>Would you like me to post bail for him, too?
- 37:21Would that make you feel better, Harry?
- 37:24>>Yes, it would.
- 37:26>>Where's the phone?
- 37:28♪♪
- 37:37>>Will you have a drink, Lieutenant?
- 37:39>>No, thanks.
- 37:41>>I thought you caught the men who committed the murder.
- 37:43>>I think we have.
- 37:44>>But you're not sure?
- 37:46>>Mrs. Grant told me that she and her husband
- 37:48were getting a divorce.
- 37:50Did you figure in that in any way?
- 37:51>>Well, yes.
- 37:53Jason and I were going to be married.
- 37:55>>And you were on intimate terms with Jason Grant?
- 37:57>>Yes. >>A long time?
- 37:59>>Our relationship started about a year ago.
- 38:03>>Then you'd know all about him.
- 38:05>>[ Chuckles ] No one knew all about Jason Grant.
- 38:08>>Let's not fence. The night of the murder,
- 38:10When did you leave?
- 38:12>>About 9:00. I've already told you that.
- 38:13>>Was Grant alone?
- 38:14>>No, Tony was with him.
- 38:16>>Did he know about your friendship with his father?
- 38:19>>I think he found out that night.
- 38:21He, uh, he saw us embracing. >>And what was his reaction?
- 38:27>>An honest answer?
- 38:29>>They're usually the best kind.
- 38:31>>I think it was a combination of shock and jealousy.
- 38:35You see, Inspector, although Tony never made a pass,
- 38:38I knew he was attracted to me. >>Mm-hmm.
- 38:41Did he know his father intended to marry you?
- 38:43>>Not at that time.
- 38:45Jason was going to tell Tony that night.
- 38:47>>And did he? >>I have no idea.
- 38:50Why don't you ask Tony?
- 38:51>>I intend to.
- 38:53Now, you've told us that you came right home
- 38:56and never left the apartment.
- 38:58>>That's right.
- 38:59>>And when Grant never showed at your place,
- 39:01you went to sleep. >>Right again.
- 39:02>>Isn't that strange? I mean, you weren't concerned?
- 39:05>>You didn't know Jason, Lieutenant.
- 39:07He didn't like to be accountable to anyone for his actions.
- 39:10>>Mm-hmm.
- 39:12>>And really, of all the people involved,
- 39:15I had the most to gain from Jason alive.
- 39:19Did. I get nothing.
- 39:20>>Yes, I'm aware of that.
- 39:22But I've talked to the garage man in your building,
- 39:24and he tells me that a little after midnight,
- 39:27you took your car out
- 39:29and didn't bring it back until about two hours later.
- 39:32>>He told you that?
- 39:33>>Uh-huh.
- 39:35>>Well, I believe all the papers said
- 39:36that Jason died around 11:00.
- 39:38And if that's right, why then,
- 39:41he's a darling for giving me a perfect alibi.
- 39:45Wouldn't you agree, Lieutenant?
- 39:47♪♪
- 39:55>>Why? Why?
- 39:57Why would she put up bail for me?
- 39:59>>I told you, Wynn. Because I asked her to.
- 40:01>>Ah, I don't buy that.
- 40:03>>Well, you don't know her the way I do.
- 40:04>>She doesn't know me.
- 40:06Nobody puts up that kind of money for --
- 40:08for -- for a stranger, no matter what she tells you.
- 40:10How does she know I won't skip?
- 40:11>>She took my word for it.
- 40:14>>I don't buy that either. All that talk about how she --
- 40:15how she felt she had done you wrong.
- 40:17And the guilt. She said that she was...
- 40:20[ Snaps finger ] Of course.
- 40:22Why didn't I think of that before?
- 40:24That's it. >>What?
- 40:26>>Guilt. That's the key word.
- 40:28Guilt. She feels guilty because she killed Jason.
- 40:32>>Are you crazy?
- 40:33>>I'm just getting smart.
- 40:35She said Jason was divorcing her.
- 40:37Didn't you tell me she said that?
- 40:39>>I said they were getting a divorce.
- 40:40>>Sure, sure. We both know Jason.
- 40:42If he divorced her, he was through with her.
- 40:45She'd never get a cent from him.
- 40:46He'd fix it with his attorney
- 40:48so that she spent the rest of her life chasing him for alimony
- 40:51or her settlement.
- 40:53She couldn't face up to that, so she killed him.
- 40:54>>What are you doing?
- 40:56>>I'm calling Lieutenant Metcalfe.
- 40:58>>Now, you listen to me. You say you didn't kill Jason.
- 41:00I don't know who killed him if you didn't.
- 41:02But I know one thing for sure, Denise didn't.
- 41:04And I'm not going to let you throw her to the wolves
- 41:06to save your own skin.
- 41:07>>That's a noble speech, Harry.
- 41:10Particularly coming from a guy who threw me to the same wolves
- 41:13to save his own skin.
- 41:15>>You can't make me feel any worse about that than I do.
- 41:17It's one of the reasons she put up the bail.
- 41:19I told her how I felt about letting you down.
- 41:21>>Yeah? >>Yeah.
- 41:23>>Listen, she's got all the money in the world.
- 41:26She can hire great lawyers. They'll be sure to get her off.
- 41:29We can testify about what a lous Jason was.
- 41:32She's still attractive.
- 41:34She's got everything going for her.
- 41:35>>I don't care what you say. She didn't kill him.
- 41:38>>And you're not going to let me call Lieutenant Metcalfe?
- 41:39>>That's right. >>Sorry, Harry.
- 41:42[ Grunts ]
- 41:43[ Clattering ]
- 41:45[ Telephone keypad clicking ]
- 41:49[ Train whistle blowing ]
- 41:51♪♪
- 41:58>>Duffy, bring me the lab reports.
- 42:00>>Again, Lieutenant?
- 42:01>>You heard me.
- 42:03>>Coming up. Want some coffee with 'em?
- 42:05>>Oh, no. Just the reports. >>Here they are.
- 42:12You know what you're looking for?
- 42:13>>Nope.
- 42:15>>The call from Wynn Thomas made a lot of sense.
- 42:18>>You think so? >>Well, she put up the bail.
- 42:21She had a motive.
- 42:24We got no one who swears she stayed home all that night.
- 42:26>>Yeah, we got no one who'll place her at the murder scene,
- 42:28either. >>How about Wynn Thomas?
- 42:30Why don't you think he did it?
- 42:32>>I didn't say he didn't do it.
- 42:33She said there are a lot of loose ends,
- 42:36and I hate loose ends.
- 42:40Hey. >>You got something?
- 42:42>>Look here. From the coroner's report.
- 42:45Here, look.
- 42:47>>Death resulted from one bullet in the heart.
- 42:50Three other bullets were fired into the body,
- 42:53all below the waist. Well, I don't see what --
- 42:56>>It could be, Duffy. It just could be.
- 43:01♪♪
- 43:08[ Doorbell rings ]
- 43:09>>Who is that?
- 43:11>>Well, I know you think I'm a very smart girl, Tony,
- 43:13but I really can't see through doors.
- 43:15>>Send them away, Kay.
- 43:17>>You're uptight about being here, aren't you?
- 43:20>>Yeah, sure I am. Everybody knows about you.
- 43:23>>Oh, we're never going to have a relaxed relationship
- 43:25until you stop worrying about what people will think.
- 43:28Who is it? >>Lieutenant Metcalfe.
- 43:31>>Don't let him in.
- 43:32>>Uh, well, it's late, Lieutenant, and unless --
- 43:35>>I think you'd better let me in, Miss Woodhouse.
- 43:38[ Door opens ]
- 43:40>>That sounds ominous, Lieutenant.
- 43:43>>Evening, Mr. Grant.
- 43:44>>Evening.
- 43:46>>I know you better than to offer you a drink.
- 43:48So, uh, what can we do for you?
- 43:50>>A few answers.
- 43:53>>I, um, I'm afraid I'm all out of answers.
- 43:56>>How about you, Mr. Grant?
- 43:58>>I'll do anything to help.
- 43:59But we've been over everything so often.
- 44:01>>There's been a new development.
- 44:02>>Oh. >>Mr. Grant,
- 44:04did you know your mother has posted bail
- 44:06for Wynn Thomas as well as Harry Tolan?
- 44:08>>No, but --
- 44:10>>But can you think of any reason
- 44:12why your mother would do a thing like that?
- 44:13>>I haven't given it any thought.
- 44:16>>Your mother told Mr. Tolan she posted his bail
- 44:19because she felt badly about the way she treated him.
- 44:22>>That makes sense. >>She also spoke about guilt.
- 44:25>>What kind of guilt?
- 44:27>>That's the question. Thomas thinks is connected
- 44:29with her not wanting to let an innocent man go to prison
- 44:30for a crime she committed.
- 44:33>>Thomas is a liar, and you're a fool for listening to him.
- 44:36>>What makes you so sure?
- 44:37>>Because I know my mother.
- 44:39She couldn't have killed dad any more than --
- 44:41any more than she could kill a fly.
- 44:43>>She can't account for a time
- 44:44Around 11:00.
- 44:46>>She says she was at home.
- 44:47>>We can't place her there.
- 44:49>>Oh, yes, you can. I was -- I was there with her.
- 44:51I was there with her the whole time.
- 44:52>>Now, that's a stupid lie, Mr. Grant.
- 44:54And I'm sure you only said it because you're so upset.
- 44:58>>Of course I'm upset.
- 45:00Why don't you forget about mother
- 45:01and concentrate on nailing down the case
- 45:03against Thomas and Tolan?
- 45:06Although I can't see what else you need.
- 45:07>>I need to know why four bullets were fired
- 45:10when the first shot killed your father.
- 45:12>>The killer hated dad. He just --
- 45:14he just kept firing and firing.
- 45:17We all know how much Thomas hated him
- 45:19and -- and why.
- 45:20>>But the bullets were fired low.
- 45:22It all seemed very deliberate.
- 45:26>>Well, maybe it was.
- 45:27Maybe -- maybe Thomas hated him so much --
- 45:30>>That he stopped in the men's room
- 45:32to get towels to muffle the sound of the shots,
- 45:34when all along he knew there was a -- was a silencer
- 45:36in the toolbox Tolan left behind?
- 45:39>>Maybe -- maybe he didn't have time.
- 45:41It-t-t takes time to fit a silencer onto a gun.
- 45:44>>Or maybe the killer was someone who saw the gun
- 45:47but didn't know about the silencer in the toolbox.
- 45:51>>Yeah. That's possible.
- 45:54>>Does your mother know you're seeing Miss Woodhouse?
- 45:58I take it she doesn't.
- 46:00How do you think she'd feel about that?
- 46:02Her son taking right up with the same woman
- 46:04his father --
- 46:06>>You do play a very dirty game of pool, don't you, Lieutenant?
- 46:09>>Murder is a very dirty game, Miss Woodhouse.
- 46:12Well, Tony, isn't the men's room locked?
- 46:15Does your mother have a key, or, uh...
- 46:19do you, Miss Woodhouse? >>I think you'd better get out.
- 46:22Lieutenant, this is my apartment.
- 46:24And don't come back without a warrant.
- 46:25>>That can be arranged.
- 46:28What do you think your mother's going to say, Tony,
- 46:30when she finds out that you're in love with Miss Woodhouse,
- 46:32just as your dad was?
- 46:34You think she's gonna feel she killed your father for nothing?
- 46:38>>She didn't do it. She didn't.
- 46:41You know She didn't do it.
- 46:43I just couldn't stand seeing him hurt her that way.
- 46:47And all for --
- 46:49Because he had a picture of himself as the great lover.
- 46:52The great, great lover. So I, I took care of him.
- 46:57I was glad to take care of him.
- 46:59The way he -- he would have taken care of anyone like him.
- 47:02♪♪
- 47:11>>Like father, like son. Jason Grant was dead.
- 47:15Murdered by his own son who was driven to kill him
- 47:18because of his love for his mother.
- 47:21I'll be back shortly.
- 47:23♪♪
- 47:30♪♪
- 47:40Tony Grant confessed and was sent to a mental institution.
- 47:44As for Wynn Thomas and Harry Tolan,
- 47:47they had their revenge and they found it empty.
- 47:51For a while they kept on meeting every Friday night,
- 47:54but strangely, after a while they found they had nothing
- 47:58to talk about and drifted apart.
- 48:01It was almost as if, with Grant dead,
- 48:04their lives were now without purpose.
