- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. I am Lucas, and this is Luna. We are so glad you are here. Luna: Hi everyone! It is good to be back. We have been doing a lot of different places lately. Lucas: That is true. We have been to the gym, the dentist, the airport, and even the garden center. Luna: Oh yes. And clothing stores too. But today we are going somewhere else entirely. Lucas: We are heading to a hardware store. In German, we often call it an Eisenwarenhandel or just a Baumarkt. Luna: A Baumarkt. That sounds big. Do you like those places? Lucas: I find them fascinating. There is always something you need that you did not know you needed. Luna: Like what? A very specific screw? Lucas: Exactly. Or maybe just a new lightbulb. But first, let us talk about how to ask for help there. Luna: Okay. How do I start? I feel nervous asking strangers for things. Lucas: You do not need to be nervous. Just use one simple phrase. Repeat after me: Wo ist... Luna: Wo ist... What does that mean? Lucas: It means Where is... It is the most common way to start any question in a shop. Luna: Okay. Wo ist... The paint section? Lucas: Good. Let us make it complete. Wo ist die Farbe? Where is the paint? Luna: Wo ist die Farbe. Got it. That seems easy enough. Lucas: It is very easy. Now, imagine you walk up to a staff member. You might say: Ich suche... Luna: Ich suche... I search? Or I look for? Lucas: You look for. So you could say: Ich suche eine Lampe. I am looking for a lamp. Luna: Ich suche eine Lampe. Okay. And if I want to know if they have a specific item? Lucas: Then you use this phrase: Haben Sie... Do you have... Let us try it together. Luna: Haben Sie... Schrauben? Screws? Lucas: Perfect. Haben Sie Schrauben? Very polite and direct. Luna: I like that one. It feels confident. But what if I find something and want to know the price? Lucas: Ah, excellent question. This is crucial. You ask: Wie viel kostet das? Luna: Wie viel kostet das? How much costs that? Lucas: Exactly. It is a standard phrase everywhere in Germany. Not just in hardware stores. Luna: Wie viel kostet das. I will remember that. One more thing though. Lucas: Yes? Luna: What if the person hands me something, and I realize it is exactly what I wanted? Lucas: That is a great moment. You can say: Das ist genau richtig. Luna: Das ist genau richtig. That is exactly right. Lucas: Yes. It shows the clerk that you are happy with their help. Luna: I love that. It makes the interaction friendly. Before we practice more, I have a quick thought. Lucas: Go ahead. Luna: If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, and you want to support the show directly... Lucas: We keep things ad-free because of listeners like you. If you want to buy us a coffee to say thanks... Luna: The link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It really helps us keep making these episodes. Lucas: Thank you. Now, back to our hardware store adventure. Let us put these phrases into a scene. Luna: Okay. I am walking into a large Baumarkt. It is very bright inside. Lucas: Right. You need a drill. You see a worker near the power tools. What do you say first? Luna: I will ask: Wo ist der Bohrer? Where is the drill? Lucas: Good. The worker points you down an aisle. You go there but cannot find it on the shelf. Luna: So I ask again: Ich suche einen Bohrerschrauber. I am looking for a drill driver. Lucas: Nice touch. The worker checks his tablet. He finds it behind the counter. Luna: He brings it over. I pick it up and ask: Wie viel kostet das? Lucas: He tells you the price. You pay and take the box. Does it look like the right model? Luna: Yes. It is perfect. I smile and say: Das ist genau richtig. Lucas: Excellent. You handled that beautifully. Let us review the phrases quickly. Luna: Okay. First: Wo ist... Where is... Lucas: Second: Ich suche... I am looking for... Luna: Third: Haben Sie... Do you have... Lucas: Fourth: Wie viel kostet das? How much does that cost? Luna: And fifth: Das ist genau richtig. That is exactly right. Lucas: Perfect repetition. Try saying all five in order now. Luna: Wo ist... Ich suche... Haben Sie... Wie viel kostet das... Das ist genau richtig. Lucas: You sound very natural. Remember, these work in many shops, not just hardware stores. Luna: True. I could use them at a bookstore or a clothing shop too. Lucas: Exactly. Language is flexible. Use these tools where you can. Luna: I feel much more ready to go shopping in German now. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Anytime, Luna. Keep practicing these phrases until we chat again. Luna: See you next time!
