Transcript
- 0:30[SPEAKER_03]: What's up everybody and welcome to another episode of Scouting the Finns part of the three arts precaried podcast and also part of the five reasons sports network.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_03]: Training camp is finally here and unfortunately we have a lot of injury news to report for the dolphins.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_03]: Coach is not here with us tonight, but we do have our other co-host Eric Wittigieric.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_03]: How are we doing?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_01]: doing our right training camp is finally back and there's certainly been no shortage of news to talk about in the first few days.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm happy to break it all down and excited to talk about it.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_01]: How you guys doing?
- 1:08[SPEAKER_01]: And doing doing good.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_03]: We got a couple of special guests here.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_03]: We have Ethan J. Skolnik.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_03]: They had a bunch of five reasons boards along with Alfredo R. Tiaga of three hours per carry.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_03]: Who were there for the last two days up to often training camp gentlemen?
- 1:24[SPEAKER_03]: How are we doing today?
- 1:26[SPEAKER_04]: going to be with you.
- 1:27[SPEAKER_04]: I don't have a face or no.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_04]: I don't see it.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_04]: I saw this face in person.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_04]: It's okay.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: I just finished doing a discord on only friends with cow crebs.
- 1:43[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't have my camera on.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_03]: We, that was part of that one too.
- 1:49[SPEAKER_03]: Asked the question, gentlemen, what was the vibe from camp that last two days compared to the last two years of camp with my nickname?
- 1:59[SPEAKER_03]: Well, out was there both days.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_04]: I'll let him start.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: It was different.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: They're run sprints now after practice, which is very different from what they've been doing the last few years as far as the timing of
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: of practice and what they are doing.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: They've incorporated more seven on seven, which is something that they didn't do in twenty two or twenty three that they're a little of in twenty four.
- 2:25[SPEAKER_00]: But now I guess it's it's a main step because it's been here for two days.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: They still do there are eleven on eleven stuff and they still have the same individual drills, but they've been two days on the four field.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: So we haven't been able to listen to the coaches interact with the players yet.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's happening on Saturday when the fans show up.
- 2:46[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, guys, you know, you know, you know, I mean, the first day, I mean, the only thing that I gathered and again, Alfa's like saying it's hard to really hear stuff.
- 2:55[SPEAKER_04]: The first day they were, they were inside for a little while and then moved outside when they weren't expecting lightning anymore.
- 3:02[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I think it was, it was interesting to me and Alfa and I were both there for, for day one that, you know, to me the most interesting thing, the Odyssey was what to ascend.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_04]: And I think specifically the two things, one about
- 3:16[SPEAKER_04]: You know, he's wanting to be more selfless in his decisions to slide or not and take the entire team into context, into consideration on that.
- 3:26[SPEAKER_04]: And then obviously the big, big conversation is Ty Reed.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_04]: And I just think that if, you know, you're hearing him step into his voice more and more as a leader over the past two, three years.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_04]: But I also think it's stuck out to me and the respect that we're in training camp now and this still isn't like resolved.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_04]: So it's a little of both.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_04]: I think it's positive that Tyrex seems to be taking these steps.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_04]: But I'll throw this one back on Al because I'm trying to think of an example.
- 3:57[SPEAKER_04]: where an issue came to training camp that we thought was going to be a problem and it's somehow just resolved itself and was not a problem again.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_04]: I can't think of a lot of those endorphins history.
- 4:09[SPEAKER_04]: Typically, when there is a problem that comes in the camp, it festers.
- 4:12[SPEAKER_04]: Did you see this festering?
- 4:15[SPEAKER_00]: I'll give you one that fixed itself, but it fixed itself with a ton of money, which was Xavier Howard.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: Brian Flores' last season here.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_00]: Xavier Howard asked for a trade.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_00]: People forgot.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: He asked for a trade.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then they were doing this dance back and forth where they were saying he was under contract.
- 4:35[SPEAKER_00]: And Brian Flores essentially, I guess, did not care if they did trade or were not.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: I guess Chris Greer refused, I guess that was the first of many times that Chris Greer and Bryan Flores butted heads, because two weeks at the training camp, Xavier and Howard had a new contract, and he was a Miami dolphin for three years after that.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, that's the only one.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_04]: So that's the only one.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_04]: But money can't fix this one.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_04]: That's the problem, right?
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: This would be that one and try it.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they did that already.
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: That'd be something if Tyre can manage to get himself another thirty million dollars out of this.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it was no way.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_04]: It's no way.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_04]: There's no way.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_04]: That's, that should be a sale.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_04]: But to me, that's the big thing.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, that in the quarterback situation, whether or not there's anybody that can be trusted in that, in that quarterback room, other than Cohoo, I feel like that's, those are really the two biggest issues I think so far at the guard camp.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_04]: In addition to the injuries, we're switching
- 5:38[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to have those in everything.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I was there when you till green, like, you know, blew out his knee, right right in front of him.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I'm very first day after he was in first round pick.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_04]: Like, there have been catastrophic injuries in the first week of camps.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_04]: So I, you know, having an injury here there was, I mean, General Ramsey had been right after he got a choir, right?
- 5:55[SPEAKER_04]: So this, this is kind of thing I've
- 5:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Ryan Tenhill running out of bounds in his second practice of training camp.
- 6:03[SPEAKER_00]: And he'll close out of me.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_00]: And a week later, we had the Jay Cutler experience.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_04]: With a cigarette.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yep.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_04]: Exactly.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_01]: So what, you know, you talked about the Xavier and Howard thing.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's a great segue because it seems like the dolphins.
- 6:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's an annual tradition every training camp to have some sort of contract dispute going on as camp is
- 6:29[SPEAKER_01]: is kind of in its throes and the Zack sealer situation is interesting especially in light of the Christian Wilkins moods that dropped earlier today and it just kind of brings to mind the situation with Christian Wilkins and the team a couple years ago now just based on the sense of
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: that training camp versus this training camp.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: How similar do those two situations feel?
- 6:57[SPEAKER_01]: And do we see maybe the same kind, do we see it playing out kind of in a similar way?
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: Or is XC later going to end up actually being a guy that gets paid at the end of this?
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: Well, what I find the most interesting about all of this is that I think Florio and Pablo Torri had the best video of at least a month.
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: They did a video that was titled, why is the NFOPA in such chaos?
- 7:24[SPEAKER_00]: Well, for starters, there are all their videos got everybody fired at the NFOPA, so that's why they're in such chaos.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: But remember what came out from that?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: JC Trider was essentially telling players, no, you're your final year.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: is not really your final year under contract.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: That is your year to start extending and he kind of put it kind of bluntly like, yeah, you could fake injuries now.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: And that's why the NFL filed the grievance and they actually won and they buried it and that's what in Florio and Pablo Tory brought to light.
- 7:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's happening all across the league.
- 8:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like there is no such thing as playing out the final year of your contract anymore.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: And I thought it was refreshing kind of strange to be honest with you.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: The Zaxi was asked today about his contract situation and he poo-pooed it and he said, yeah, no, I'm on the team and I'm playing and that's that because if I were a drama for once, right?
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: Like a drama for God because if there's one guy that is, he's being robbed.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just put it bluntly.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_04]: But Alfred, he's also the one guy that I think just based on his demeanor since he's come to the dolphins that you wouldn't expect.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_04]: to sort of stop his feet, right?
- 8:38[SPEAKER_04]: Like it just doesn't seem to be in his personality to do that.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, it really hasn't been.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: He's had two contract negotiations, and they've gone rather quickly, and they both came up kind of favorably for the dolphins both times.
- 8:56[SPEAKER_00]: So the one I'm interested in seeing, and that one's going to be a doozy, is next summer with Mink of its Patrick.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to be fine.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_03]: So with this whole Zax sealer stuff, we see how culture changes teams, with especially with the heat.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_03]: and the Panthers.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_03]: I think he's one of those blue guys, those leaders on the defense, but can that blueprint that Zack sealer embodies?
- 9:23[SPEAKER_03]: can't spread to the entire locker room from defense to often to the special teams.
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, impossible.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll tell you why.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: No way.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's like what the heat did two years ago where they found Max Drew's and Caleb Martin.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine if the heat did that every single year, but times five.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_00]: Like they found five UDFA's out of nowhere that became rotation players in the NBA.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, guess what?
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: The Miami heat would probably win a championship by now because they would monetize all those guys for draft fix and they would use those graphics that get stars.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_04]: Well, they they wouldn't actually not.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_04]: We know that.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but that's it.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_04]: That's another conversation.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: They are ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to be ready to
- 10:22[SPEAKER_03]: Presence is more so off-field locker room culture and accountability.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but who's not nobody nobody everybody is going to be about their money in a different way.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_04]: That's the thing.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_04]: Like so I don't I mean, I think it's it's one thing and sort of setting a tone.
- 10:35[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to play for the team.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to sacrifice but when it comes down to dollars and cents, I don't think other guys are necessarily going to take their human.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_04]: In fact, there may be some and this has happened a lot of rooms before who wanted to fight for his money.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_04]: because it sets a precedent going forward that, you know, a team can't get over on a particular player and certainly the agents want them to fight for their money.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_04]: The NFLPA wants them to fight for their money.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_04]: So again, I give this axiola credit for doing this.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_04]: I remember there's been other issues that I remember, I mean, here's one example and this is another, there's a Drew client, Connor Williams a couple years ago, right?
- 11:13[SPEAKER_04]: Came into camp, wasn't sign-up contract, talked about how he was just going to play it out, didn't seem happy.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_04]: blood is neat, right?
- 11:21[SPEAKER_04]: I've retired.
- 11:22[SPEAKER_04]: So these guys, I think I look at themselves.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_04]: I think there, it's one thing to say, okay, we're gonna, you know, be team oriented behind the scenes and show up to meetings on time.
- 11:32[SPEAKER_04]: Like, that's important.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, respect the coaches, that's important.
- 11:35[SPEAKER_04]: But what comes to money, I don't think that, afraid of my wrong.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I think I feel like the guy, every guy is gonna handle that differently based on what their own needs are.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely, and the NFL pay may be in complete total chaos and there may be the weakest of all the unions.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, much of the sports, but I don't think that their agents are weak because David moves yet.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: If you could follow him and see his work, that guy is a wonder.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Because not only when the NFL is colluding, think about this.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: The NFL is colluding against second round picks to not pay them guaranteed contracts, essentially because the Texans and the Cleveland Browns are so bad at this.
- 12:14[SPEAKER_00]: And what do a few teams do?
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: They get guys to capitulate to ninety percent guarantees.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_00]: David Mugulietta sits there right behind the dolphins.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, right behind the dolphins in the draft order, and he says, no, one hundred percent guarantee or nothing.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: Sure enough, he gets his client sign for one hundred percent guaranteed.
- 12:36[SPEAKER_00]: And within, I think, two hours, the dolphins sign Jonah Savaya and A for a hundred percent guarantee as well.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: So they have really good agents, bad union.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it's, it's, look, this next CBA in twenty twenty seven.
- 12:52[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to get ugly.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I do expect a lockout for sure in twenty twenty seven.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: So we're talking about one more season.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: So everybody's like, my God, that's so far away.
- 13:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's just one more season.
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it's, it's kind of interesting because two of the biggest headlines coming out of the first day of camp where we're injuries, but
- 13:13[SPEAKER_01]: What I think about like the roster top to bottom.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_01]: It kind of, I mean, now hopefully everything is good with mottoes and and already burns, you know.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_01]: hoping for a speedy recovery for those guys, but as far as the rest of the roster goes, it kind of feels almost as healthy as Adolf and his team has been coming into a season.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_01]: Don't jinx it now.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_01]: Don't jinx it now.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_03]: Don't jinx it now.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_03]: Eric, you said it.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, let's just spit it out.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_04]: There's some guys into his matter to this success of a team and some guys don't, right?
- 13:52[SPEAKER_04]: Like that's really it.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_04]: And so we're kind of saying is they haven't had one of those yet.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_04]: And as long as they don't have one of those, they have a chance, but I guess the the issue is like, how deep is this roster and where can they actually sustain.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_04]: injuries to core guys and I mean it's it's pretty clear like in the second area you don't have a lot of wiggle room right strictly out at a boundary corner I mean I don't even know who's going to emerge there but that's certainly a place you don't have a lot of wiggle room and then you have the issues of guys the past race which should be a strange but you have multiple guys who are coming off catastrophic injuries and so that could take a hit there and of course on the offensive line
- 14:39[SPEAKER_04]: one key injury on the offensive lines problematic and of course, a quarterback.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_04]: So, you know, and then, you know, I'm waiting, I hate to say, but I'm waiting for the water hamstring pull that keeps him out for two weeks.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_04]: So, I know you had a big catch there.
- 14:51[SPEAKER_04]: You know, they spotlighted, but they don't have, I mean, Alfredo, how would you grade their depth?
- 14:58[SPEAKER_04]: Like, if I was to say to you, the depth of this roster from a one to ten, ten being the best compared to other teams around the league, what would you say?
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's solid five because they're deep in a couple of places.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're deep on edge.
- 15:13[SPEAKER_00]: They're deep at linebacker like I really like their lineback and core.
- 15:16[SPEAKER_00]: I like what they did, especially since they remade the entire room.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: So that was a very, very nice work.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: I like the interior offensive line, but they're paper thin at tackle.
- 15:27[SPEAKER_00]: Like they really cannot take an injury to Austin Jackson or Patrick Paul.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_00]: But on the interior offensive line, they're pretty good.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I like their wide receivers.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: But of course, you lose a jail of water or a tyree kill.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: You're losing a star.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_00]: You lose in one of your better players on the team.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, it's a solid five because it's patchy where they have depth and where they don't have depth.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_00]: I got a great stat that Kyle Crab's gave to me since bully gate.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking about two thousand thirteen.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: It's the year of our Lord twenty twenty five now.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: So it's twelve years later.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_00]: The Miami Dolphins have had one season where they've had two offensive linemen play an excess of one thousand snaps in consecutive moments.
- 16:12[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 16:13[SPEAKER_03]: And I think since the Mike McDaniel era, there's only been two games where you've had the starting five offensive line in front training camp into the season.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_03]: Actually play.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that's the biggest key to this.
- 16:26[SPEAKER_03]: You have Patrick.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm the.
- 16:29[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, the song.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: I think that.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the follow up stat to that to that stat, who saw him is those two games.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: They scored forty five points and seventy points.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, and I think that's probably what they loaded up more so on the interior because they have certain swing guys that can play swing tackle in a pinch now the drop off from Austin Jackson as we saw it last season specifically in the run game
- 16:55[SPEAKER_03]: When I take a look at some personal personal runs, specifically out of eleven and twenty one personal, they're not running to the left at all.
- 17:03[SPEAKER_03]: They're not running to the beer the sea gap in the left.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_03]: They're more so going towards the boundary side, which is usually, I'm sorry, they're not running to the right.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_03]: It's a part of me.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_03]: They're not running to the right where Austin Jackson plays at or whoever the swing tack would be.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_03]: They're running more so towards the left and a little bit more so towards the boundary side.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_03]: I'm turning these things in.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_03]: I'm noticing like they're putting extra blockers on the boundary side, whether it be Julian Hill, Malik, Washington, you're having Liam Iconberg come in and be the pin pull card.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_03]: They're running more from there, so if Austin Jackson is out, expect to see that same type of consistency and runs more so towards Patrick Paul's side end, but the extra help and extra blockers.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, another follow-up to that stat, the Buffalo Bills, I've had two consecutive seasons of having at least five guys play a thousand snaps.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: So if you're doing the math, the Buffalo Bills have had five times as many guys play a thousand snaps as the dolphins I've had in twelve years.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_04]: Is that a structural thing Alfredo?
- 18:08[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, is that is that?
- 18:11[SPEAKER_04]: That's what I'm saying.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_04]: I know I know Kaufman.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_04]: I know C.K.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_04]: has been on this, but like is that it seems to me like again, he's taken some chances on guys with some injury history.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_04]: But it's also training that goes into this, right?
- 18:26[SPEAKER_04]: There's also luck.
- 18:28[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, there's all of those elements, right?
- 18:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's about training luck.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's easily fifty percent luck, okay?
- 18:36[SPEAKER_00]: So you just got to be lucky.
- 18:38[SPEAKER_00]: But it is also, look, Chris Greer has tried to exploit a market inefficiency.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_00]: He thinks, and it's at least a philosophy.
- 18:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's just not throwing stuff at the wall, hoping that it stinks.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: He thinks that players that have injury histories are undervalued in the NFL.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_00]: So he's gonna go out there and get them in free agency.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_00]: Think about it.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: When he signed to Ron Armstrong, what was to talk all over Twitter?
- 19:03[SPEAKER_00]: My God, Chris Greer for President.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: Remember everybody thought Chris Greer was a God for getting to Ron Armstrong for eighteen million dollars a year?
- 19:11[SPEAKER_00]: Well, if you extrapolate that and you do it per game, you essentially were paying to our norms that are on twenty four million dollars a year.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: So you were paying him as the highest paid left tackle in football.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_04]: Well, there's the other issue related to that, which is you get really good played from him while he's there.
- 19:29[SPEAKER_04]: You get leadership, right?
- 19:30[SPEAKER_04]: So that was beneficial, but
- 19:32[SPEAKER_04]: You also had that uncertainty they would deal with on a weekly basis where on Thursday, you didn't know if he was starting that weekend, which I mean, again, if you're trying to build continuity on the unit, it was virtually impossible to do that.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I look back at some of their offensive linemen that they've had over time.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going way back here, okay, but like the Todd waves and the Tim Rotties, like they played a lot of games.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_04]: Like I mean, they weren't necessarily great, but they played a lot of games and there was at least that that stability where I feel there was the quarterback for most of that time.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_04]: But they kind of, they kind of knew that those those guys were gonna play, but you're not getting the web in Sims stuff anymore where guys are playing fifteen.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, Keith Sims, like, didn't he have like the second longest streak in terms of consecutive games?
- 20:17[SPEAKER_04]: We have Marino for the dolphins, like that is, that's just not something you see anymore.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, Rick and Webb was for years and years and years.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he was starting at Lush Tackle.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: He was right there on Dhammarino's blind side.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_00]: He knew he was going to be there.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, that was no such thing as, oh, well, he's questionable this week.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_00]: No, Rick and Webb was going to be there.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_00]: No matter what, every, every single game.
- 20:42[SPEAKER_00]: Same thing for for a few guys in the NFL too.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: Like Cret Williams has been that way ever since he had his belt with cancer.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: Think about it.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_00]: This guy survived cancer and then has gone out to be essentially an Iron Man.
- 20:52[SPEAKER_00]: Until last year when they were had a bad season and he missed a few games, but you could see that one coming.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_03]: All right, Ethan J. Skolnik, thank you so much for joining us here on Scouting Defense.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_03]: Follow him.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_04]: I know I got to go.
- 21:05[SPEAKER_04]: But I want to throw this one out there for you guys.
- 21:07[SPEAKER_04]: There's a prominent column.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_04]: This covers the dolphins who's out there.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_04]: And I was talking to him.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_04]: And he refers to Chris Greer's GM for life.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_04]: Afraid it was he GM for life.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_04]: Is there anything that could change that this year?
- 21:21[SPEAKER_04]: I guess that's my big question.
- 21:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to have to take
- 21:26[SPEAKER_00]: extreme embarrassment, I think if they make the playoff, I could see how he could sell Stephen Ross on trying to live to see this team win.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I appreciate it.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you, Ethan and Jay, Skolnick, Alf, and Eric, still on the topic of the offensive line.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_03]: They have made some additions recently with Dan Brouskill.
- 21:59[SPEAKER_03]: Is this a little bit of July optimism during camp of the offensive line?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_03]: They have the depth, they have the guys, they have newer players.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_03]: We just haven't seen them in pads yet and it's just happy go-dory right now.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think, you know, on paper, this is definitely, I mean, it's tough to say considering the arms that the departure and you just don't know what you're going to get from Patrick Paul.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_01]: But I think everybody kind of is in agreement that we at least saw promise in Paul last season.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: It looks like it should be one of the best deepest offensive line, you know, depth charts of the dolphins have had certainly in the last four or five years on paper.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_01]: But we know that the games aren't played on paper.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think that there's only so much optimism you can have up until that point where you do see it on the field.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: But you go back to Aaron Brewer and his acquisition he's been fantastic since he's put on a Miami Dolphins uniform.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: We've seen what Austin Jackson can do when he's healthy.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: James Daniels, I don't know necessarily what you're going to get out of him from all reports.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: At least he looks physically.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like he hasn't lost much since the Achilles injury.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_01]: Jonah Savinaya.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you don't necessarily know what you're going to get out of him, but you know, for a guy that's drafted thirty seven, though, for all you expect pretty good things.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_01]: And then adding Brunskill, who is a really solid kind of utility, backup guy, along the interior to where, you know, you don't have to rely on Lee and Mike and Bird if somebody gets hurt.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's a pretty big acquisition in and of itself.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: I think that naturally there's going to be a honeymoon period with this naturally there's going to be some unease about the offensive line with this team as there always is.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I can't think of a better front seven for a jelling offensive line to go up against day in and day out and practice then.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: but the dolphins are going to be putting on the field.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_01]: So I think you'll get results pretty quickly and a good read on this group.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_03]: I think the biggest key to this is going to be Patrick Paul.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_03]: He only played with less than three hundred and sixty snaps last season today.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_03]: He said that he studied all of his offensive snaps.
- 24:38[SPEAKER_03]: Not only did he study his snaps.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_03]: He studied tape of, and I quote, this is from Barry Jackson,
- 24:44[SPEAKER_03]: from the pressure today, if I think you were there as well, so you have every single tackle for thirty one teams that says a lot, trying to get an understanding, but it also tells me that the dolphins are looking to run a lot of diverse things this season rather than sticking to their bread and butter.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I would expect a little bit more inside zone running this year, and a little bit more diversity in the run game, a couple of players I've already mentioned some of that.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Back to Daniel Brunskill, I absolutely love that signing, and I said so at the time, I'd said it before the start of the free agency, I wanted him as the third guard.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: I wanted to fill both guard spots with either James Daniels and Will Hernandez, and then bring in Daniel Brunskill because he's a guy
- 25:35[SPEAKER_00]: who not only can't back up both guard spots and do it adequately, he also knows the system inside and out, played on two very, very good, forty-anter teams, started on two very good, forty-anter teams with Mike McDaniel, but I've seen his tape from just last year and in my opinion, I think he's a starter level
- 25:57[SPEAKER_00]: He's a starter level or starter quality player at center right now.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: So he's a guy that can play three spots.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: And if you told me right now, you didn't have Aaron Brewer for four or five games.
- 26:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'd be, I'd be just fine with having Daniel Brunskill in there to take his spot.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_00]: Because I do believe he's a high level center, especially based on his play last year.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, he played seven hundred snaps last year.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_00]: Give up no sacks.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: allowed depending on who you believe PFF or or pro football reference.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: Seven pressures or eleven pressures and he had three penalties and remember he played center left guard and right guard last year.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, this is a high quality.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_00]: Look, you're not signing this guy to start seventeen games.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: But if this is your third guard.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_00]: This is a very high quality backup to have anywhere in the league.
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's one of the better backup guards to back up offensive linemen, especially on the interior that you can have.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_03]: Eric, who do you see as the second year guy that can make the jump outside of Chop Robinson?
- 27:10[SPEAKER_03]: We know he's got the past for us.
- 27:11[SPEAKER_03]: She's going to be playing a little bit more, and we'll have more help with Kenneth Grant, Zach Sealer, Bradley Chub, and Jaylin Phillips back.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_03]: I think it's important this season.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_03]: We see a jump from a lot of second year guys.
- 27:28[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that there's a few good
- 27:30[SPEAKER_01]: Candidates as far as this goes.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm bullish on quite a few of the second year guys actually.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_01]: But if I had to pick one, I'm actually going to keep it in the offensive line and I'm going to go with Patrick Paul because of the mental makeup that he has.
- 27:49[SPEAKER_01]: We know this is a guy that puts in the work that's going to do what it takes to be great.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_01]: He's got the the right mentality about it.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: And then I think when you combine that with the just freakish physical tools that he has, you know, at a position where you have to be freakishly athletic to succeed.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_01]: He's, I mean, he is a monster among monsters with his combination of size and athleticism.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: And I think
- 28:23[SPEAKER_01]: you know, in another year with butchberry and just cleaning up his technique, I think he's going to be a pretty good left tackle this season.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: Now, I don't, you know, that's not, it's not going to make a pro bowl team or anything like that, but I think he's going to be a guy that after this season, we look at and we pencil in as it often is left tackle for the next, you know, intense seasons.
- 28:50[SPEAKER_03]: Very high remarks.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_03]: for Patrick Paul.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_03]: I'll this second year draft class with Patrick Paul.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_03]: Job.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_03]: Chop Robinson, Jalen Wright, Lake Washington, Todd Washington, and Moe Camero.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_03]: As well, who do you see as being a riser this training camp into the season?
- 29:10[SPEAKER_03]: And who do you see as a surprise cut?
- 29:14[SPEAKER_00]: Hmm, that's a, that's a good question.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think a riser, man, it's year two and I think I said Johnson just has a look about him.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: I think he could be a boundary player for this team and not to say that he's going to start, you know, in place a thousand snaps, but
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: can they have a situation where like let's say they sign resoul Douglas and you have resoul Douglas and you know cohu on the outside and then cohu reduces inside for the nickel and those spot that those boundary snaps are split between campsmith and Isaiah Johnson yes I could see something like that
- 29:55[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think Storm Duck is best suited to be a nickel to be honest with you.
- 30:00[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, it gives them a little bit of redundancy.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that that's a high riser, a surprise cut.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: Man, that's a rough one.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe Taj Washington after being a draft pick last year.
- 30:15[SPEAKER_00]: Because I think they're they're pretty deep at why receiver and they have a lot of big guys Armstrong we's Even Tariq black made a couple of plays today and if Erica's a comma is anything like what he's been looking like through two days Then yeah, it starts to get very very tight think about it.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_00]: You got your top two guys Waterland Tariq.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: You got milk
- 30:41[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Westbrook Akine and now you add as a comma to that mix, that's five and we still haven't talked about any of the UDFA's.
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I think a surprise could be Taj Washington.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I think he will get on a team by the way, because he has a lot of speed and he has good tape from USC.
- 31:02[SPEAKER_00]: Do we think
- 31:03[SPEAKER_03]: There will be one to two players that will take an unexpected regression after this season.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_00]: An unexpected regression for this season you may for this season.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_00]: Look, I think Chop Robinson is perfectly situated to progress further because his role is going to be reduced.
- 31:32[SPEAKER_00]: He was asked to do much more last year than he's going to be asked to do this year.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: He's essentially the third past Russia now.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: So he's going to be picking up like low hanging fruit all the time.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: He's going to be rushing at the best times, like third and eleven, third and fourteen, that's when he's coming into the game.
- 31:48[SPEAKER_00]: So he's going to have the most opportunities to affect the pastor.
- 31:52[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, he could have one of those seasons like Trace Armstrong had in I believe, ninety eight or ninety nine were he was averaging almost a sack per like eight snaps.
- 32:03[SPEAKER_00]: And he was only playing on third downs and he ended up with sixteen snacks that season.
- 32:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I think you guys have a season where if both are healthy, it's Bradley Chug and Jalen Phillips are healthy that both guys will out-snap chop Robinson, but chop Robinson will have more snacks than those two.
- 32:21[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that's a possibility.
- 32:24[SPEAKER_03]: Eric, we've got a pretty crowded turning back room with Devon H. Jalen Rye, Ali Gordon, Nate Nualo and a couple of other
- 32:32[SPEAKER_03]: UDFA.
- 32:32[SPEAKER_03]: There's a lot of camp buzz about Jalen Wright.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_03]: He changes number from twenty five to five taking Jalen Ramsey's old number.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_03]: He's got a lot of speed.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_03]: He also forced a lot of misdeccals in his limited time in getting carried.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_03]: There was something I found last season where he and where he monstered almost had similar amount of carries.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_03]: But Jalen Wright had more yards for carry.
- 32:58[SPEAKER_03]: more broken tackle significantly, more broken tackle is about twenty percent more than Reim Master.
- 33:04[SPEAKER_03]: And he also had a better rushing yards over expected.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_03]: Who do you think, do you think, do you think Jalen Wright will actually push Devon Hain for running back for the running back one spot?
- 33:23[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think so, not necessarily because I don't think right is a good backer capable back.
- 33:32[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I think what HM brings to the table is extremely special.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_01]: And I think comparing the two guys really kind of an apples to oranges, things, things just in terms of where I think they'll inevitably be at to provide for the offense.
- 33:50[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of total carries, I could see right, you know, maybe getting seventy to eighty percent of the carries that that agent gets if if all goes right.
- 34:03[SPEAKER_01]: No pun intended.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 34:11[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think he pushes HN for, you know, a majority of the snaps in the backfield on a given play.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_01]: And I honestly think that, you know, even kind of just talking through this, I haven't mentioned Allie Gordon once and I think there's a chance Allie Gordon gives Jalen right some competition, not, and again, because I'm higher Allie Gordon.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_01]: and what he could bring to the running back room as a guy that's more of a physical runner.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_01]: So I think right takes a step and is clearly the RB-two this year in a way that he necessarily wasn't last year.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_01]: But I think HN is very, very, very clearly.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: Number one in the packing order and the running back room.
- 35:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I tend to agree and I think Jamal Wright the good news is that man if he just if he just gets the playbook down and just understands what he has to be doing at all times he's going to be a good player, okay?
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: You saw it all last year.
- 35:21[SPEAKER_00]: Like he really did not have any bad moments.
- 35:24[SPEAKER_00]: And in fact, I can make an argument that there was so many games where you were wanting to see him more.
- 35:34[SPEAKER_00]: One game that reminded me of this was in Seattle.
- 35:39[SPEAKER_00]: His last carry against Seattle was a nine yard run where he ran over three guys and then he never got into the game again.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: And at that point, it was just a seven point game against the bills.
- 35:49[SPEAKER_00]: He rattled off a few runs.
- 35:52[SPEAKER_00]: They decided to sit him down and they brought in most of it and that was the drive where most are fumbled.
- 35:58[SPEAKER_00]: J.L.
- 35:59[SPEAKER_00]: Wright, when asked to do simple things and just run outside zone inside zone, he's always been impressive.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I do expect a big season from him.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: But no, he will not supplant Devon H and Devon H and is a guy who has a ton of versatility.
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: And look, those snaps are going to be tight.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_00]: Look, they brought in an Alexander Madison to do one specific role.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: He's a short yardage back.
- 36:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I'll record him six, two, two hundred and twenty five pounds.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_00]: And if you watch him out there,
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: He's every bit of it.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: Like you tell this is a big guy, you know, and we're only a year removed from him being a heisman candidate at running back.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_00]: So this is a guy that they should take a very long look.
- 36:41[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 36:42[SPEAKER_00]: And I think in preseason is going to be a lot of fun this year because there's going to be guys are going to get the ball like those UDFA wide receivers are going to get the ball in preseason.
- 36:51[SPEAKER_00]: And how the Gordon is going to get carries.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_00]: So you're going to get a very long look at all these guys.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_03]: of before we get out of here.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_03]: What has the dolphins rookie class look like?
- 37:01[SPEAKER_03]: Namely, the three defensive tackles in Jonas Avenue.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Zieg Beggers has been getting name checked by everybody and you can see why like he's lengthy.
- 37:13[SPEAKER_00]: Played out a position last year at Georgia Tech, and now he's going to be in a much more natural zone, more natural role.
- 37:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I expect some things from him, kind of scrapped as advertised.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: He looks a little bit apart.
- 37:28[SPEAKER_00]: Giant guy, and he can move.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Phillips, what I find interesting is that he's marrying Benito Jones, and I've said this before.
- 37:37[SPEAKER_00]: I wouldn't be surprised if he takes over Benito Jones zero role by midseason.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_00]: And that's kind of what you want, right?
- 37:45[SPEAKER_00]: And the ZERO is, you know, we're talking about a fifteen to twenty snap per game role.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's not a full-time job.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_00]: But I think he could do that well, because he is absolutely strong.
- 37:57[SPEAKER_00]: So, yeah, I like this group.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_00]: And I like them going into the draft.
- 38:01[SPEAKER_00]: Like, Zig Biggers was the guy that I did not have in my, in my top ten.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: But I created three tiers where you need to have at least one from each tier to rebuild the entire defensive tackle room and they actually grab one from each of the tiers and they took my number one guy and kind of scratch.
- 38:20[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm biased because I liked all three of these guys coming into the draft and they actually took them.
- 38:26[SPEAKER_00]: so so far so good uh they're getting very high marks and Austin Clark is pretty involved with them so can't wait to watch and play against the Chicago in a couple of weeks because that should be fun they should get plenty of playing time yep back together we think weekend will be this Saturday remember day will be next Saturday is all they have a lot of practices
- 38:47[SPEAKER_03]: lined up off for the archiago is there almost every day.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_00]: I've never scored every day.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm there every single day.
- 38:54[SPEAKER_00]: I have not missed a practice in eight years.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: So wow.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_00]: So yes.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_00]: I've been this every day for eight years.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_03]: And if you guys want exclusive vetted camp reports, make sure you check out the only fence discord ran by a very young three yards per carry members.

- 39:31[SPEAKER_03]: We much miss Coach Hope.
- 39:33[SPEAKER_03]: He is doing well.
