- 0:46And welcome back to the Boundary Corner Podcast along with my
- 0:49partners Brian Siegler, Jonathan Talley, and Shelton Moss.
- 0:52I am Curtis Wilson in this episode is brought to you by
- 0:56Doctor Jeremy Counts down at the Main Street Pharmacy in
- 0:59Blacksburg. Your friendly neighborhood
- 1:00pharmacy, 301 S Main St. Definitely go see Jeremy.
- 1:04Rally for Robbie is back this week in Lot 1.
- 1:08If you don't follow Grayson Wimbush, follow him, He'll give
- 1:10you the exact location. I got a feeling it's probably in
- 1:12164 again next to Castle and it's $7.00 and you always can
- 1:17pick it up at the pharmacy as well.
- 1:19Gentlemen, how's it going on a cool fall Tuesday night?
- 1:27Man, that weather feels good, don't it?
- 1:30Finally turning into fall or false fall.
- 1:34I don't know. We might get some more
- 1:35summertime but. In the morning time it's feeling
- 1:38like fall down here. I hear that.
- 1:41I don't think we get any more false fall.
- 1:44I think that's it. I think up here it's it now down
- 1:46there in Alabama maybe y'all get one more 85 degree week I think.
- 1:51I don't know what false fall feels like in Alabama.
- 1:53So you got to, you got to tell me what that's like.
- 1:54Go ahead. Well, you go through all Four
- 1:58Seasons in one day just about you'll wake up and it's like 50
- 2:04degrees and then. During the day.
- 2:07So you have to turn your defrost on to get the frost off of your
- 2:11window in the morning time before you take the kids to
- 2:14school and do whatever. And just about when you're you
- 2:19go get breakfast or coffee and start heading back home.
- 2:22So 30 minutes. It's like art is getting too
- 2:24hot. I got to turn this off.
- 2:26So you go from about 5052 to about 70 and then on into the
- 2:33middle of the day you get to about 85.
- 2:36And then it just dwindles down home for the rest of the day.
- 2:40So you go through about all Four Seasons in one day?
- 2:44In one day. In one day, man, we we had a few
- 2:47of those, man. Like I think it was a couple
- 2:49weeks back. We had like two or three days in
- 2:50a row. There was like a 40 degree swing
- 2:53from the from the morning temps to the evening temps.
- 2:56It was like 53 in the morning to 93 in the afternoon and that's
- 3:01why I sound like I do right now because the when the weather
- 3:05can't settle my allergies and my sinuses is just out of control,
- 3:09they like. Yeah, I'm fighting too, but I
- 3:11got, I got one this, this sinus right here is on fire, buddy.
- 3:17Alrighty. Well, we got a lot to uncover.
- 3:19Obviously, Hokies fall to FSU3917.
- 3:24We're going to talk about that. Then we're going to preview the
- 3:26Wake Forest, know the enemy. But before we start all that
- 3:29stuff, I want to give a shout out to all of our listeners
- 3:32because last week was our largest combined episode we have
- 3:37ever had. Between not quite, not quite,
- 3:40not quite, not quite not quite the we had, we had the episode
- 3:45back there with the panel that that hit a bunch of high points
- 3:49there. But this is this is the highest
- 3:52episode when it's just the crew. Just the crew.
- 3:54Just the crew. 3000 listens over 1700 on YouTube, 1300 plus just
- 4:02downloaded from podcast sources and we won't thank Y'all because
- 4:06legitimately we lost Tally. I don't know where he went.
- 4:09I mean cuz legitimately we are. We're four fans, Shelton writes
- 4:13a ton and kudos to him for that. If you do not check Shelton's
- 4:19workout on the key play, y'all need to subscribe just for
- 4:22Shelton's articles. In general, it's also.
- 4:24I appreciate that anytime. Your articles are awesome, man.
- 4:28So we're just four fans and we love talking about this and
- 4:31researching it and writing about it and talking about it and
- 4:34making notes and sitting around that we won't get tally back.
- 4:37But that's what we are, you know, Sheldon and alum us three
- 4:41or not. And just to do this and have
- 4:433000 people want to listen to your opinion on it, it means a
- 4:46lot to us and so want to tip the hat to everybody out there
- 4:50listening. Is he gone?
- 4:55It looks like he said he lost the Internet there, full stop,
- 4:58so hopefully he can get that back on.
- 4:59But if not, we we we we go forward, man.
- 5:02We go forward, we move, we move and let's hit some news and
- 5:06notes while hopefully Tally can get a connection here and let's
- 5:13just let's drop this. I'm sure y'all saw the news
- 5:16former Hokey head coach Justin Fuente is going to Indiana as an
- 5:22offensive analyst. Fox.
- 5:25Gentlemen, I mean, that makes a whole lot of sense from his
- 5:32standpoint. I mean, it's a, it's an
- 5:36offensive job where he can kind of get back to his bread and
- 5:39butter. It's an analyst position where
- 5:40he doesn't have to deal with all of the other stuff that he
- 5:44demonstrated he was not very good at.
- 5:46At Virginia Tech. So like I said, overall I think
- 5:51that's a that's a good solid fit for his skill set at this point
- 5:55in his career shown any any thoughts on this?
- 5:59Yeah, I mean of all the things that I would not Justin Fuente
- 6:02for, I think his knowledge of the exes and knows of football
- 6:05is not one of them. I mean, I've talked to coaches
- 6:07who use his run packages from TCU and you could also look at
- 6:10the way that he he neutralized JJ Wattnet ball game that had
- 6:13against. Against Wisconsin and the Rose
- 6:16Bowl back a few years ago. So you know, football, like
- 6:19Brian said, I think it's just a better fit for him being an
- 6:20offensive analyst because he can sort of, you know, get away from
- 6:24the recruiting aspect and just focus on ball, which is his
- 6:27Forte Valley that we are discussing.
- 6:31Ex hokey coach Justin Fluente taking a job with Indiana as a
- 6:34offensive analyst as. Long as he ain't got to do no
- 6:37recruiting and stuff, it'll be fine.
- 6:39Everything got talking to parents.
- 6:41I ain't got to go make no. Crazy decisions like if he's
- 6:45just in the background collecting the check, he.
- 6:48Doesn't have to glad hand donors he doesn't have to do.
- 6:50He's a pretty good, he's a pretty good football mind.
- 6:53And no, I do not have great value Internet.
- 6:55That would be an upgrade. I have Alabama Internet and this
- 7:01suck. Doesn't matter what you do.
- 7:04Doesn't matter what you do. Oh my gosh.
- 7:06Well, I think y'all right. It is.
- 7:08It is his wheelhouse. It's an offensive analyst job.
- 7:10Again, he doesn't have to do anything but break tough down
- 7:12and put stuff out there. And like you said, Shelton, some
- 7:15of those concepts he had at TCU and when we saw it flash at
- 7:18times here, you knew it was right.
- 7:20But I think for him in general, I think that's probably where he
- 7:24lands. And by the way, I'm kind of
- 7:25shocked. As big as his buyout was, I know
- 7:27that's an ill point with everybody.
- 7:30I mean, we're right at two years, like right at 2 years, a
- 7:33couple weeks away from 2 years. I thought it'd be a couple more
- 7:37went back to. Work that's.
- 7:40Fair. That's fair.
- 7:42All right. I mean, so does that mean Grit
- 7:45is coming to Indiana? Oh, well, Tom Allen's safety,
- 7:50He's an alum and he given a couple of their best seasons of
- 7:52all time. So maybe question is, did he
- 7:56become OC at Indiana? That'll be a bigger interesting.
- 8:01All right, I did not get to see this on Saturday night.
- 8:05I got texted about it from from this, from from this panel right
- 8:08here. Saw it on Sunday morning.
- 8:13Anybody want to explain what the was Miami doing with 35 seconds
- 8:18left at the end of the game? I don't know, man.
- 8:23I tried my best to make sense of it.
- 8:25I was like, do they just not want any negative plays?
- 8:28I don't. You know, maybe taking a knee
- 8:30gives you an offense, a negative run.
- 8:32I don't know. We sat watching on in in college
- 8:36football. Somebody got some, so I know
- 8:39what it was. Somebody had the more than on on
- 8:42prize picks when he was going to fuck him up.
- 8:44It had to be something, man, because it's like there's no
- 8:47reason to run the ball, no reason at all.
- 8:50But but the worst part, I'll let you chime in.
- 8:54The worst part was OK, you'd run and they fumble.
- 8:57The worst part was OK. 30 yard game was not the worst part.
- 9:01They made a good play. The worst part was the
- 9:04touchdown. Why do you have two guys back
- 9:07there? They go have to throw somewhat
- 9:10of a Hail Mary to get it to the end zone from 40 plus yards out.
- 9:17Any any Did you get to watch this?
- 9:19Did you see this live by chance, or did you see the text and be
- 9:23like what did they do? Yes, I actually did see it live.
- 9:25I I caught it right as a fun what was happening?
- 9:27I don't understand defensively how?
- 9:31They gave up that those big touch, those big passing plays
- 9:34when they were dropping aid into coverage.
- 9:35Like I don't understand how that works.
- 9:38I mean you're playing prevent defense, you know that the the
- 9:40one job you have is to not get beat deep and they got.
- 9:43Beat deep. Just don't get beat deep.
- 9:45And they got beat deep two times.
- 9:48The last time was still the worst.
- 9:49Because I I sit here as a coach. Well, I sit here thinking as a
- 9:53coach, OK, what? What do they need?
- 9:54They need a touchdown, right? Yeah, four guys are going to
- 9:57stand at the goal line. You don't.
- 9:59Least you do not leave your your heels, do not leave the goal.
- 10:03Line until you just don't let him get to the.
- 10:05Just don't let nobody get to the goal line.
- 10:06But you got to handle so. You're you're in at least a
- 10:10nickel, probably a dime look, and every single one of those
- 10:14people that has a DB attached to their name needs to be on that
- 10:18fucking end zone. Ready to knock that shit down
- 10:22and get that shit out of there? It's really funny that that.
- 10:25Happened. And I mean, you get burned
- 10:27twice, like you didn't even learn from your mistake.
- 10:31I don't know why it happened, but I was happy I wanted.
- 10:34My I mean, it's hilarious. I wanted an hilarious, well,
- 10:37y'all know that's not the first time it happened.
- 10:39Oh, Oh no. Yeah, we've seen it before.
- 10:42It did it out there in Oregon. Almost lost the stand for doing
- 10:45the same shit. So I'll tell you what might need
- 10:49to get that man there. Somebody needs to to send him
- 10:53the victory formation play design.
- 10:56You can even do it to. Say here's a present.
- 10:58Yeah, do it on a shotgun. Do it however you want to do it.
- 11:01You don't have to teach your quarterback to take a snap under
- 11:04center to do this. Not anymore.
- 11:06Receive the stat. Take a knee.
- 11:08That's all you got to do. Game over W in the win, college.
- 11:12All right. Well, let's move to it, boys.
- 11:14Let's move to tell the truth Tuesday of what went well, what
- 11:17went bad, anything we weren't prepared for and things we got
- 11:20to do better moving forward. Some of these will sound
- 11:23monotonous from the last few weeks.
- 11:24That's Okay, because that means we got to deal, do things
- 11:28better. But I'm going to start out to
- 11:30get here and let's start with what went well, Brian, what is
- 11:34something you felt like went well on Saturday?
- 11:38We ran the football pretty well man, considering the opponent.
- 11:43I think we ran the ball pretty well overall.
- 11:46I like seeing drones on that big run, stepping up in the pocket,
- 11:52making a big run, about a 40 yard carry.
- 11:54I believe Malachi Thomas had his best game of the season.
- 11:58We mixed into in there a little bit we saw.
- 12:02You know we had a chance Black and Bryce Duke exciting late,
- 12:05not that that really played a factor in the in that very much,
- 12:08especially with the the ball getting on the turf a little bit
- 12:11there. But overall, I mean if if we had
- 12:15been a little bit better in some other areas, I'd I'd have been
- 12:17okay overall with the run performance.
- 12:21Kylie, what about you? What do you feel like went well
- 12:24on Saturday afternoon? We returned to kick.
- 12:28We hadn't done that in a long time.
- 12:31You know what Tooting, which Tooting is just a man like he he
- 12:36is getting hit before he gets the ball.
- 12:38He's bouncing off people. So he may, I think he only had
- 12:41with 30 yards rushing or 25 yards rushing and maybe 25 yards
- 12:46receiving, something like that. But it takes someone to the
- 12:49house and I'm like yelling at the TV.
- 12:51Why do you keep putting on starting running back back there
- 12:55to run off a run a kick and then he runs it back?
- 12:58So I'd sit down and shut up, you know what I'm saying?
- 13:01So I mean, I think it's been 11 years since we returned to
- 13:04kickoff and he did it. And it's crazy because if you go
- 13:08watch that kick, he wasn't running fast until, like, he
- 13:12just kept hitting more gears. Like he he, he was, you know,
- 13:16mosing alone. Then he felt some pressure.
- 13:19He hit another gear. Then he felt the dude about to
- 13:21catch him, He hit another gear. I was like, God damn, how fast
- 13:24can he run? So that was, that was good to
- 13:27see. That was awesome to see.
- 13:29Sam, what about you? What do we do?
- 13:31Well, they covered. They covered the, that is.
- 13:36That is the most important thing.
- 13:39I mean obviously the the kickoff return helped.
- 13:42I thought the Russian game was you know pretty solid all things
- 13:44considered success rate wise they they had a pretty well,
- 13:47they stayed on schedule for the most part.
- 13:49So I thought it was pretty a pretty solid performance
- 13:51relative to the quality of the opposition.
- 13:55Alright, I'm, I'm, I'm kind of with you on that.
- 13:58The one thing I said and we said this in the keys last week is
- 14:02keep FSU in front of you, right, Keep the passing game,
- 14:06especially keep that passing game in front of you and we did.
- 14:11Now the first quarter, they drove the ball three separate
- 14:15times, took about 4 1/2 minutes. Each time we gave him 22 points.
- 14:20That's not great, but it's one of those things that you know
- 14:24people are going to be pissed anytime you people score on you
- 14:27or you lose a game. But the whole idea of keeping
- 14:30people in front of you is more play, more plays, equals more
- 14:36chances for people to make mistakes, to make errors, to
- 14:39force turnovers. So when we were doing, they were
- 14:42driving like that first one, where they're driving, they're
- 14:44driving, they're driving, remembers the third one.
- 14:48Kalyle Lawson always had a pick because wherever he dropped,
- 14:53Jordan Travis missed him and he almost had the pick.
- 14:56So when I say that key teams in front of you, it's not
- 15:01necessarily, well, that what if they keep scoring because let's
- 15:05talk about the Reds on defense later.
- 15:08But that piece is eventually somebody's going to make an
- 15:11error or eventually it's going to be third and short and
- 15:14they're going to run the wrong play and they're going to have
- 15:15to punt. That's just those things we can
- 15:18build on anything else that you know offensively or defensively
- 15:23that caught Y'all's eye that you know from Saturday.
- 15:31I mean I think the big thing we got, we got some pressure on the
- 15:33quarterback. I mean they hadn't really
- 15:36surrendered a ton of pressure and especially getting home and
- 15:40you know we were able to do that somewhat consistently,
- 15:43especially in those kind of middle quarters where we kind of
- 15:46made a little bit of a run there.
- 15:47So you like to see that hopefully that can continue as
- 15:52we kind of move forward here to. Wake Forest this week because
- 15:55we're going to need to get some pressure I think, on the
- 15:56quarterback to to affect what they do well with that slow
- 16:01mesh. Yeah, Tally mentioned it last
- 16:04week. They'd only given up 4 sacks all
- 16:06year. We got two Saturday and he was
- 16:10he was pressured. They'd only given up one.
- 16:12They'd only given up one. And we pressured them numerous
- 16:17times. Jordan Travis got out of it and
- 16:18we talked about it. He's he's athletic.
- 16:20He's slippery, so that is what it is.
- 16:23But again, you keep seeing that against the level of that
- 16:26competition. You know, obviously things went
- 16:29bad, you lost the game, but when you see we ran the ball well
- 16:32against them, Okay, that's good. We had some special teams, we
- 16:36did pretty good there. We kept them in front of us.
- 16:39They did not hit explosive pass plays.
- 16:41But let's talk about what went bad because it happened again.
- 16:44Y'all. Don't say it.
- 16:48Don't even. Don't even say it, Sheldon.
- 16:50Say it it happened again, it's. One of your favorite categories?
- 16:58Explosive plays. Button plays.
- 17:02Let's explosive ruins now. We can't fix it, man.
- 17:06We can't fix it. All right, well, let's Let's be
- 17:10real though for the two, because it was an 85 yarder that was
- 17:14bad. The 85 yarder.
- 17:16We pulled up the tape. I'd ask people to cover their
- 17:19eyes because Jane McDonald just completely messed that up
- 17:24completely. The other one, I looked at it
- 17:28like four times myself, and then I conferred with our offensive
- 17:32line specialists over here. The first one was just a good
- 17:36block play. Nobody was really.
- 17:38It wasn't bad fits or anything. It was fit right.
- 17:40They just blocked it. Well, with you again, You play a
- 17:43team like Florida State with that much talent, guess what
- 17:45happens? Oh yeah.
- 17:46It's going to be a talent discrepancy.
- 17:47You know you're going, you're going to run into a play where
- 17:50that just better than you. But the thing that bothers me is
- 17:53that we play six games. What we have is what we are, you
- 17:59know what I'm saying? It's kind of like what we see is
- 18:02what we get and this is going on every week.
- 18:07You know, you think you got defensive coordinator, that's
- 18:10been a long time linebacker coach.
- 18:13You got pride who's a defensive guy, linebacker coach.
- 18:16And we just continuously give up big runs when we need one stop,
- 18:22go back to the Rutgers game, it's like third and one, third
- 18:26and two, they break off a big run.
- 18:28You go to the Marshall game and so on and so forth.
- 18:32It's not anything that I think they can fix in the in the
- 18:35season. I think Shelton probably said
- 18:37this like numerous times in the chat, like it's a it's a talent
- 18:42deficiency that we have to fix in the offseason.
- 18:46So they got to go in this portal and they got to get some help
- 18:49because yeah, the run fits have been bad.
- 18:52But when you start playing certain teams, it's like the run
- 18:56fits is bad because you don't know what you're doing or you
- 18:59just don't have the capability to fix it.
- 19:01So that's what's frustrating. Well, I'm, I was going to save
- 19:06this for a little while, but I'll bring it up now about what
- 19:09to do better moving forward. It is it's night and day when
- 19:13Tisdale and Lost are on the field.
- 19:16If it's there, they're good. If anybody else or any
- 19:19combination or one of them's, it's it legitimately just and
- 19:23with Tisdale and Lawson, Brian, they made some mistakes earlier,
- 19:28but those two guys have fixed it.
- 19:31Yeah they they've definitely cleaned up some of their errors
- 19:34as the season has gone on. I mean they're they're the first
- 19:38long touchdown. They were both on the field,
- 19:41Lawson slightly over pursued, Tisdale a little slow getting
- 19:46there, but they they were more or less where they needed to be.
- 19:48It was just also well blocked play.
- 19:52You know the other play, you can't make that that move.
- 19:57If you're McDonald, you can't try to undercut.
- 20:00The the blocker in in another gap and and make that play from
- 20:05behind. You're not that athletic.
- 20:09I was saying earlier you know you're not you're not Michael
- 20:11Parsons here. You're not you're not equipped
- 20:13to make that play right now. You need to play sound play
- 20:18within the structure and make them earn it.
- 20:22When you when you do stuff like that that's that risky against a
- 20:25a a good team and the defense that's already struggling with
- 20:28these things that that's the outcome all.
- 20:33Right. Any anything else y'all want to
- 20:35add to that of what went bad about the explosive runs?
- 20:41All right. I really, Yeah.
- 20:43Tallies. I think we're tired of talking
- 20:45about it. The issue is we keep, yeah,
- 20:47freaking doing it. I mean, at some point we just
- 20:49either need to see it get better or we're going to keep having to
- 20:51bring it up every. Week.
- 20:52Bring it up every week because it's not getting better.
- 20:54Hey, hey. I mean, I don't.
- 20:55Want to be it? Did it against PIT.
- 20:58So maybe, maybe hokey naked Hokey Nation can show up again
- 21:02and like, be the 12th man and help us.
- 21:05Because whatever happened against Pitt, we need it to
- 21:08happen this weekend, too. It's going.
- 21:10To be nice to have it this weekend.
- 21:12Alright, something else I saw that went bad.
- 21:14Overall the numbers look good. Money downs.
- 21:17Florida State was 6 for 13, that is under 50%.
- 21:21I think it's pretty good. The bigger issue is, is in the
- 21:24first quarter they were five for five.
- 21:27On all those touchdown drives and you got and they got home on
- 21:31all like so they weren't they weren't just five for 5:00, but
- 21:33they put points on there every time.
- 21:35So you're falling down 22. I mean that's just, that's
- 21:39killer, man. That kills you.
- 21:42It does. And it was the whole thing is
- 21:44when you see 5 for five tally, you can say it you've and you've
- 21:48said it a couple times already. The opportunities were there to
- 21:51stop the drive. You got to have.
- 21:54That's where playmakers come up. You know what I'm saying?
- 21:56I ain't saying like you got to go recruit all five stars, but
- 22:00when you have people in places that step up and make plays like
- 22:03that, like that's where the cream of the crop rises, you
- 22:08know what I'm saying? I think we have a couple of
- 22:11people who can do that, but consistently we're not showing
- 22:15that we can do that across the board.
- 22:17You know, like I watched the Lane play and he's, he's balling
- 22:22like he's a, he's a. I seen him jump over a six,
- 22:26seven guy, you know, to go defend the past.
- 22:29He just can do some stuff that you can't teach, you know what
- 22:32I'm saying? So we got to find those players
- 22:35and we may have some already there.
- 22:37You know, I know we got a lot of young guys and stuff.
- 22:39Not saying I'm down on the team. I'm just saying for right here
- 22:44and right now we got to have some guys to step up and be able
- 22:48to do that. They'll be like, I'm going to
- 22:49put the team on my back to make this play.
- 22:52I'm I'm going to make a point to this because you just made the
- 22:54point about the lane making those that play on Johnny Wilson
- 22:59and for the most part holding his own and it and it goes back
- 23:02to the blend, right. You've got to have some guys
- 23:05like that. But the other guys have to be
- 23:08the guys who are going to be disciplined, know exactly where
- 23:11they're going and what they're doing and that's what they're
- 23:13going to be consistent every single time.
- 23:15And the issue is we got Lawson freak.
- 23:19The lane's great, Strong's good. Stroman people and you got those
- 23:25four, but they apr is flashing. APR is flashing, but then like
- 23:29right now you've got a guy like Nasir, people's getting back.
- 23:31Safety play was much better Saturday but he's that steady
- 23:34Eddie and and The thing is we're missing right now is it's the
- 23:40guys behind some of them. Oh yeah, the.
- 23:43Missing all you want. And to me, all we want with
- 23:45those pieces is I don't look for freaks there.
- 23:48That's the steady. The second team linebacker
- 23:50steady. You going to go to the right
- 23:51holes. You're not going to do anything
- 23:52stupid. You going to break your guy
- 23:54down, right? You going to leverage the
- 23:55outside. We don't have those guys now.
- 23:58Could Stone Snyder had been it? Maybe, maybe not.
- 24:02We'll never know. It'll be a big unknown question.
- 24:04To your point. I think the portal's got to be
- 24:06hit on the linebacker side. It's like you got to find just
- 24:09some good, solid player. Like, hey, you're going to get
- 24:12about 15 snaps a game. You're going to play special
- 24:15teams. Come here.
- 24:17Because trenches in line, I mean trenches in in linebacker room.
- 24:21How to address that and at least one safety?
- 24:24And at least one safety because the sear is gone, we cannot
- 24:26bring him back. But if you look at, if you look
- 24:29at our and we ain't got to go into this all tonight.
- 24:33But if you look at what we have on the team, if they can hold it
- 24:38together like the the main job of the coaches this offseason
- 24:43should be, let me keep. The good that I have here, let
- 24:48me make sure nobody leaves early.
- 24:50Let me make sure nobody transfers that can come back
- 24:53because a lot of these names that we're calling that are
- 24:57flashing and are making plays can come back if you pay, if you
- 25:01place the right people with them in the transfer portal, then you
- 25:05start to build like a Florida State does.
- 25:08You know what I'm saying? Like I like we talked about it
- 25:10before the game, the way that they built the team, the way
- 25:13that Northvale did it is. A game plan for pride if he uses
- 25:19it right. You know what I'm saying?
- 25:20Again, I don't think we're Florida State.
- 25:22They're they're different than we are.
- 25:24But I'm just saying how he's built this team is a way that
- 25:27you can look at it because some of the way we will never build a
- 25:30team like Dion, because we're not, we don't have the Dion, you
- 25:34know what I'm saying? But the way Norvelle did it, we
- 25:37can do that. So I'm just hoping these guys
- 25:39can move forward like that. I agree because if you look at
- 25:44it, you know, I think we can incrementally backfill here
- 25:50because I mean, you look at Florida State, a lot of those,
- 25:52their key players came over in the transfer portal.
- 25:56And I think if we can have another offseason where we fill
- 26:01in those holes like we did in this one, I think it needs to be
- 26:05more defensive focus, whereas last season, last offseason was
- 26:09offensive focus. But if you look at our offense,
- 26:11I mean, our transfers are accounting for like 75% of our
- 26:16offensive production. They are.
- 26:18It's not even a joke. So that tells you that we've had
- 26:22success in the transfer board. All.
- 26:25Right. Well, let's let's talk about
- 26:26kind of some things that went bad.
- 26:28On the offensive side of the ball, and I and I, and I'm
- 26:31sorry, I bothered y'all with this and I bothered a few other
- 26:34people with it, our offenses came in the first quarter tally.
- 26:40Explain to me why we would ever try to attack the edges against
- 26:44Florida State passing or running the ball.
- 26:48No, they faster than us, They bigger than us, you know what
- 26:52I'm saying? They're more athletic than us,
- 26:55attacking the edges, what going to work.
- 26:56But what I was more worried about was why did we come out
- 27:00trying to throw the ball so much like when we start running the
- 27:05ball and you can say. You know, well, they took their
- 27:07foot off the gas, so they did this.
- 27:09They still had their starters on the field and their starters
- 27:12still wanted to hit our players. They were still hitting and we
- 27:16averaged 6 yards to carry. You know some of those was
- 27:19drones breaking, you know, breaking a run on a on a pass
- 27:22play. But we came out and the first
- 27:24three plays was pass plays. That should never be us.
- 27:28That is not what we're going to be good at at all.
- 27:31We don't got the line to do with it, especially not against that
- 27:33team so. Back to what you said, Curtis.
- 27:36The early scheme, I was blown. I don't know what we was doing,
- 27:41but it went bad. It definitely went bad, Brian.
- 27:48Yeah, I did not like how much we were throwing the ball around.
- 27:52I didn't have a problem with the first down throws, but you know,
- 27:59sometimes when those aren't successful, you kind of get in
- 28:02this cycle where you feel like you have to throw it after that.
- 28:04So not having that early success and not not really emphasizing
- 28:09the ground game, which I mean that's what we've shown
- 28:12ironically. Like the first three weeks we
- 28:14couldn't move the damn ball and now all of a sudden I feel like
- 28:17we have found how we can run the ball.
- 28:21But we didn't get to that fast enough on Saturday against FSU.
- 28:26We didn't get to that that mode. And I think that if we could
- 28:31have like at least had a had a nice little sustained drive in
- 28:35that that early push given the defense a little bit more time
- 28:39to settle in. Because once once Barr made some
- 28:42adjustments on that side, you know other than those two big
- 28:45plays that came in the second-half, they didn't really
- 28:48do a ton right. So if we could have got a little
- 28:51bit more offense going in that early run and slowed down what
- 28:55they were doing on offense, I think that could have, you know,
- 28:58really put us in a better spot as we kind of moved into the
- 29:01second quarter there. But we we just kind of went out
- 29:04there and slung it around a little bit, got off the field
- 29:06and the defense was back on there doing it again.
- 29:09Jill, do anything on the early offensive scheme in your
- 29:12opinion? Yeah, I mean, this was a game
- 29:15where they were far more efficient running the ball than
- 29:19throwing it. I mean, just looking at the
- 29:20success rate. When rushing, they're about 55%
- 29:24successful compared to passing about 20%.
- 29:27So I mean that's kind of twice as twice as effective.
- 29:29And I think this is probably Karen Jones's worst game just
- 29:32from a pure efficiency standpoint.
- 29:34So they, I mean they just couldn't get anything going in
- 29:36the passing game and you know I can understand why you'd want to
- 29:40run the ball more but it might, you know not be particularly
- 29:43tempting against that floor to safe front.
- 29:45But it did have success with it. So I don't know it's it's always
- 29:49a balance as an OC between. You know, going with what works
- 29:52versus not trying to be too predictable because if you just
- 29:54try to hammer, you know, the inside zone all day, then
- 29:58Florida State can adjust that too.
- 30:00So I'm sure that's probably the reason for why they had the
- 30:02splits that they did, but certainly beats me.
- 30:06Yep. And if you're wondering how much
- 30:09first nine plays, seven passes, two runs, the first three series
- 30:14were all three and outs. Let's talk about it just real
- 30:19quick because it's where we're keep beating the dead horse here
- 30:22again offensive line place still ain't there shown.
- 30:26Do you have the grades for the offensive line?
- 30:30For this particular game, yeah, I can pull the notice.
- 30:32Give me one SEC. All righty, Brian Talley just
- 30:35just watching from the tape. Anything stood out.
- 30:38Anything that jumped while Sheldon gets the the stat points
- 30:42right side is still bad. Braylan Moore played his best
- 30:45game, I feel like. I was going to say kind of what
- 30:49Brian said, right side is still bad.
- 30:51I don't understand why they haven't addressed that.
- 30:53I mean you got to try to do something right.
- 30:54But some plays, you know, not to just say everything was all bad.
- 31:01Some plays again we were messing up but we messed up going full
- 31:06speed. I'm okay with that.
- 31:09Like that play were Tooting scored and he jumped over the
- 31:12kid. It was not blocked.
- 31:14Perfect people were in the right places when they pulled.
- 31:17Chaplain was in the right place. He kind of pushed his guy, but
- 31:20the guy that he pushed was the guy that too jumped over.
- 31:24So I'd like to see him finish that block, drive that man on
- 31:28out of the plate. But I can say, hey for God, it's
- 31:32what he's like 66300 and something pounds like he was
- 31:37getting on the outside. He was moving, you know what I'm
- 31:39saying? So it is some stuff that you can
- 31:41see that's going good. Or that you can build on.
- 31:44But that right side is horrible. You know, their defensive line
- 31:48was eating us alive, but I think we only gave up like 2 sacks,
- 31:52which I didn't think we. I thought we'd give up like 7.
- 31:57It felt like 7, but I mean they were living in the backfield
- 32:00only, like. True drop back drones was
- 32:02running for his life so. So, Sean, what does it say about
- 32:10the? The grades who is the highest,
- 32:14lowest or the order of? Them Well, sure enough, Brian's
- 32:18intuition was correct because Britain More did have the
- 32:20highest grade among offensive lineman.
- 32:23And then you've got Also in addition to that, Caden Moore is
- 32:30OK, probably average, chaplain a little bit below average, and
- 32:34then Park Clemens below average as well.
- 32:37Shake had a rough game and Bretti Notice had a really rough
- 32:40game. So you know it's it's a little
- 32:43bit both right side and left side but I think I mean I I saw
- 32:46one play where shit got you know twisted around by first HDT and
- 32:49give up a a pressure. I mean he's he's had a really
- 32:52rough go. I mean, he's been OK in past
- 32:53protection, but the run game has been, has been really rough for
- 32:56him. And and y'all were talking about
- 32:58it. They did have two sacks, five
- 33:00additional tackles for loss, so they were in backfield. 7 plays
- 33:04with it. I feel like this game was the
- 33:06game where Brody's physicality and youth kind of showed up.
- 33:11Yeah, cuz you're finally playing against guys that are head and
- 33:16shoulders above you talent wise and I think is an experience
- 33:20showed up there. Makes sense.
- 33:22Makes perfect sense. All right, last thing I wanna
- 33:25hit on here. And we mentioned it that we
- 33:27needed to be good on 3rd down and 4th down.
- 33:29We were not good at all. 5 for 17 total.
- 33:34Obviously the first one we're owing 3 out of the gate and
- 33:37again we we we mentioned it last week.
- 33:39The only way we're going this game is play perfect Five for 17
- 33:42on those downs. You ain't gonna get it done.
- 33:45You ain't gonna get it done. You needed to be somewhere
- 33:47between to me 8. Because if you think 8/8 for
- 33:52minimum 8. 8 for 17 and like what's that 47% you can live
- 33:57because you extend a couple drives like.
- 34:00You you slow their momentum down potentially early and and there
- 34:03there's nothing you can say about that but just it was bad.
- 34:08I do I do compliment pry for you know about midfield down late
- 34:14down what 17 or down 15 screw it we going for it we we going for
- 34:20it because what was bad and I still haven't seen anything.
- 34:24Anybody seen the spot on that 4th and 16 and it it
- 34:28legitimately? The drone breaks.
- 34:30The pocket goes as he's going out of bounds.
- 34:32He extends his arm. Yeah, I mean, it looked like he
- 34:35had it well, like had it pretty good.
- 34:38And then it was it was like a full yard spot off.
- 34:41It was a couple of spots like that too.
- 34:43I think it was one where Malachi might have caught a pass across
- 34:47the middle and got tackled, like right on the line and they
- 34:50spotted him short. And I think we ended up, you
- 34:52know, trying to do a quarterback sneak and fumbling the ball in
- 34:55the backfield. You know, just different stuff
- 34:58like that, man, and that you really don't think about, OK,
- 35:00those spots don't. It ain't that bad.
- 35:02And then it just trickles into something else.
- 35:04But. It makes you run an extra plate.
- 35:06It doesn't. The change don't reset.
- 35:10By the way, can I say something about that fumble?
- 35:12Yep. Kind of.
- 35:14Drone was in that pile for about 3 1/2 seconds in your life.
- 35:19How long does it normally take for a pile like that for them to
- 35:22blow a whistle and call momentum stop?
- 35:25About a second and a half. That thing is he jumped in and
- 35:31I'm like, he's got it. Why ain't they blowing the bird
- 35:34damage the ball out. I was like what?
- 35:36By the way, the other one strovin definitely targeting.
- 35:40But, and this is bad on the rest part, you tell me how I'm
- 35:44sitting down with a guy who was not a Virginia Tech fan when
- 35:47drones had that big run and is going.
- 35:50They hit him in his ear hole with his with his shoulder.
- 35:54Well, that ain't targeted. Yes, it is.
- 35:56Head and neck area is part of the targeting rule.
- 35:59You cannot throw your show, not even if Y'all didn't notice.
- 36:02You knew who had lost his shit on the sidelines when that
- 36:04happened. Who?
- 36:06Coach Pry. He was like, he was like
- 36:09screaming, like he hit him right in the ear hole.
- 36:11He was mad and they didn't even review it.
- 36:14Yeah, what's crazy is I watched the Florida State guy and he has
- 36:18a pretty good podcast. I can't remember the name.
- 36:20I think it's like no slaw or something like that.
- 36:24So I watched this podcast and he's got a whole podcast
- 36:26dedicated to how the refs screwed them in that Virginia
- 36:30Tech game. And I was like, what?
- 36:33So it was Florida State fans like livid that they were up 22
- 36:37to 0. And you know, the refs tried to
- 36:40get us back in the game. And I was like, hey man, you may
- 36:43be right, but y'all had your, you had your.
- 36:46You had your hand at getting some good calls too.
- 36:48There was some shit on the other side too.
- 36:50They might have missed some stuff.
- 36:51I ain't saying they didn't, but they definitely gave you some
- 36:53calls too. It was a bad call game
- 36:56regardless of whether you think you swayed one way or the other.
- 36:58It wasn't a very well officiated game.
- 37:00Not at all. They did not have a they did not
- 37:02have the top crew there. I don't know where the top crew
- 37:04was. All right, let's go to this
- 37:06next. Anything that we were not
- 37:08prepared for. And I'm going to leave this one
- 37:10off and send it to y'all because I'm going to be honest, not
- 37:13really. I expected Florida State that
- 37:16have one big quarter. I did.
- 37:19I expected them to have somewhere between 17 plus
- 37:21points. What I did not expect, I did not
- 37:24expect it out the game. To me, I think in my head it was
- 37:28going to be third quarter, 33rd quarter, going into 4th where
- 37:32they just put us away. So everything else, how they
- 37:37played, they are as advertised. I've watched the LSU game.
- 37:41I watched some of the Clemson game.
- 37:43They're for real. They are legitimately a national
- 37:46championship contender. And to say, and I know some
- 37:49people say, well, moral victories ain't worth the crap
- 37:51and ain't worth the shit for 3/4 and Tally, I know people are
- 37:56going to tell you they took the gas off.
- 37:58They weren't really playing for 3/4.
- 38:01We played them 1717 and for the psyche of our team.
- 38:06I think that goes a long way. Brian, what you got, I mean, to
- 38:12me what what surprised me was how wound up we played in that
- 38:17first quarter, especially on defense, looked like the entire
- 38:20defense was pressing. They they didn't settle in.
- 38:24They they were looking like they just were a little too tight,
- 38:31little wound too tight and playing a little, little faster
- 38:33than they needed to. And sometimes that that gets you
- 38:39at the spot where you're giving up those those plays and they
- 38:42able to keep them on the field. They they sustained a bunch of
- 38:45big drives there early and got that 22 points on the board real
- 38:49quick. So I was glad the coaches were
- 38:52able to settle them down. The adjustments that they made
- 38:56were able to more or less slow down what they were doing, give
- 39:01the offense time to kind of claw back a little bit.
- 39:05But just kind of disappointed that we're seeing that in
- 39:08another big game. Kind of, you know, to go what
- 39:14you said, Curtis. I wasn't really.
- 39:16I ain't going to say it was nothing that I wasn't prepared
- 39:19for. But you know, I predicted the
- 39:20game to be think 4221. So right about, right about
- 39:26where I thought we would be as far as what they had.
- 39:29But still, even with that, I I didn't expect them to be so
- 39:35physical. You know what I'm saying?
- 39:37Like I didn't think Florida State was going.
- 39:39I thought they were going to be more for Nest.
- 39:41Just watching some of their games, but they are really
- 39:43physical team, like their wide receivers block.
- 39:47I've seen one time like they hit canteen in the chest.
- 39:50I thought they was going to knock his back plate off like
- 39:54they were physical man. But I can say, you know,
- 39:57something else that I weren't prepared for was they were
- 40:00physical but we punched back. Like I seen the lane come up and
- 40:04hit somebody. You know, I've seen some people
- 40:06get some licks on them, you know what I'm saying?
- 40:07I've seen some people. You know, getting off some
- 40:09blocks, getting to the quarterback.
- 40:11So I don't want to say we matched that physicality because
- 40:14we did get beat 39 to 17. But I do feel like they hit and
- 40:19then we didn't just go down like we we punch back.
- 40:22We might have been, we might have lost the fight, but when
- 40:25they would have looked in the mirror, we at least gave them
- 40:27something. We scratched their lip or
- 40:28something. You know what I'm saying?
- 40:29Well, they they knocked us down, we got backed up and we popped
- 40:32them a. Few times.
- 40:34Sheldon, what about you? Anything that you were not
- 40:37prepared for on Saturday? Not really.
- 40:40I mean I thought maybe the the defensive acts weren't as
- 40:43productive as I thought. You know they done pretty well
- 40:45in coverage up to this point, but they got, they got clicked
- 40:48pretty well. I can try to find the success
- 40:52rate for for passing plays around 48%.
- 40:55So not not ideal. That's one area where tech, I
- 40:59think it's done a really good job this year is is, you know,
- 41:01keeping keeping things locked down in the passing game.
- 41:05You know as compared to the run game, but I don't know I mean
- 41:07these games are hard to analyze because you've got you know such
- 41:09disparity in terms of you know the the talent.
- 41:12I think Tech went down by about you know 9 or 10 spots and in
- 41:16the defensive SP Plus ranking. So you know they got they got a
- 41:20little bit of a downgrade there. I think you know even when
- 41:22you're playing it and it's really good, you can still, you
- 41:24can still make evaluations of of how you played.
- 41:27And this was just, it's just not a great game for the defense.
- 41:30Point blank. I mean, regardless of.
- 41:32If you're playing the photo site similar to the Washington
- 41:33Generals, you got to play. So they just, they just, they
- 41:37didn't, they didn't make enough plays.
- 41:40All right. Did not make enough plays.
- 41:41All right, let's go real quick. Before we wrap up this segment,
- 41:45let's just talk about what we can do better moving forward.
- 41:47Brian, what you got with this? I mean, it's proven across the
- 41:52board this year we cannot afford slow starts.
- 41:57Point blank, we cannot afford to start slow against really any
- 42:00competition, but especially against that level of
- 42:02competition, all right. Tally, what about you?
- 42:07Starts with the quarterback, man.
- 42:08I mean, they took the oil out this week, so they did.
- 42:12Price say it. The drones is the guy for now.
- 42:16He threw that in Neptune. But we all know Grant is hurt.
- 42:19So if we're rolling with drones and you want him to be the
- 42:21quarterback of the future, you got to put him in positions to
- 42:25be successful. And the way that he can be
- 42:29successful is using his legs in the passing game, using his legs
- 42:33to when the play breaks down. Like they got to constantly be
- 42:37in his ear, telling him to look for lanes, constantly be in his
- 42:41ear, telling him or running plays, rolling him out.
- 42:43Because what I've noticed is again, Florida State was really
- 42:48good. He was drifted.
- 42:51You know we're we're running plays and he's drifting back
- 42:54instead of rolling the pocket and it's so hard to make a, I
- 42:58mean you just can't. That's why we looked like we
- 43:00looked in the passing game. So I'm hoping this week, moving
- 43:04into the weight game, we got to get back into doing what he's
- 43:08good at. Chilling What about you?
- 43:11One thing we can do better moving forward.
- 43:14I mean I think the the keeping run game can you know be a
- 43:18little bit better I think I know I was looking at the stats last
- 43:21week and and we Jones has been one of the.
- 43:24Most heavily used quarterbacks in terms of design runs and I
- 43:27did notice that against for the state, like their difference of
- 43:30line was definitely keying on that stuff.
- 43:31Like there was one run they had the goal or knew the goal line
- 43:34on 1st and goal where they had a QB draw for drones and first it
- 43:39was right there. So, you know, obviously the
- 43:41defensive line will take those gaps and you know if they're
- 43:45expecting QB draw, they're going to play a certain way.
- 43:47So but it but it's a tough situation for Bone because
- 43:49obviously you know that's kind of like a really successful play
- 43:52for tech. So if defenses start keying in
- 43:53on that, it's getting a lot harder to to get big plays off
- 43:56of that. So just just find ways to get
- 43:58drones out in space and use his legs, which obviously are his
- 44:01best asset. Well, and you talk about that
- 44:05like that draw play, because we ran the same draw play the week
- 44:08before and it was a touchdown build off of it.
- 44:12Show that draw. Let them take one false step
- 44:15forward. Get the safety's out of position
- 44:17and cross somebody right, right where they'd be.
- 44:20That's why you're paid almost $1,000,000 a year.
- 44:22Because if my stupid self can think about something like that,
- 44:25I hope he can. You'll pay.
- 44:29Yeah, something. But the whole thing is, it's
- 44:32that layer, right? Teams are expecting it.
- 44:34Now do something they're not expecting and the next thing you
- 44:37know, they're sitting there and they're not moving doing
- 44:38anything. And the lane opens back up Make.
- 44:41Give me some wrinkles off of what we're already showing and
- 44:43what we're already successful at.
- 44:44If we could throw some wrinkles in there, then you at least can
- 44:47set. You know you use it as your
- 44:49bread and butter, but it also sets up some other things if
- 44:52they start keying on it. 100% One last piece.
- 44:56What we got to do better moving forward?
- 44:57Y'all the red zone defense got to get better.
- 45:00We are dead last. Y'all saw it.
- 45:01There's four teams, we're one of them, that every time a team has
- 45:05entered the red zone they have scored on us. 14 for 14 Internet
- 45:10and I know where to hit a day and age where kickers are
- 45:13better. You know, the 35 yard field
- 45:16goals are almost becoming something that's a 90% make,
- 45:18even in college. But we need a turnover.
- 45:22We need to block a kick. We need to effectively, you
- 45:27know, do something because it's killer.
- 45:31Like, you know, teams drive down there and score a touchdown or
- 45:34get a field. We'll get points every single
- 45:36time. It it's one of those well things
- 45:40and to to know that you are along with three other teams
- 45:43have not stopped anybody once they've got inside the 20 yard
- 45:46line. I mean that's got to be mental
- 45:48right? Like for the not only just for
- 45:52the defense, for the entire team, like all pass through the
- 45:5415, well, they're getting something here.
- 45:57I don't know what they're getting.
- 45:58It's coming. So kind of like we talked about
- 46:02earlier, you got to have somebody that steps up and makes
- 46:05a play, excuse me, you got to have a playback on there.
- 46:09You got to have somebody that says like we're not going to let
- 46:12them score. I don't know what we're going to
- 46:13do, but we get a pick, you know, I don't know so.
- 46:16What's a fumble like? What's a fumble do?
- 46:19Something like a kick. Do something.
- 46:23Get an offensive lineman in there on field goal block and
- 46:26get get a big ass hand up there and get a little piece of it.
- 46:29100%. All right.
- 46:31So y'all, before we get into Know the Enemy, we are going to
- 46:35take a quick pause for my Digital partners and Main Street
- 46:38Pharmacy. I can probably save you a lot of
- 46:41money and I can take a lot better care of you.
- 46:44That's pretty much it. My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm
- 46:47a pharmacist. I want to operate Main Street
- 46:49Pharmacy here in downtown Blacksburg.
- 46:51My brother's A pharmacist. I'm a pharmacist.
- 46:52My uncle's A pharmacist. My dad's a pharmacist.
- 46:54I remember he would give me M&M's to count in little pill
- 46:57counters. This is something I've always
- 46:59done and I'm just lucky that. What I know so well is something
- 47:03that I can do and feel good about it and get back to people.
- 47:06Pharmacies are your frontline defense.
- 47:08Pharmacy job is to make sure you're getting optimal care for
- 47:11the lowest price possible. Also, we take the pressure off
- 47:15of emergency rooms. I'll tell people immediately
- 47:17when they need to go to the doctor, or I'll tell them if
- 47:19they just need a cream over the counter.
- 47:21If there's something that isn't commercially available, if it's
- 47:23something that's not available in a certain strength or a
- 47:26certain form or anything like that, we'll make it tailor made
- 47:29medications. Some of those options save
- 47:30people a lot of money. What motivates me?
- 47:32I get to take care of people and limit Blacksburg, I thought.
- 47:35Neat. As we take a quick break, we'd
- 47:40like to tell you about getting your free website report from
- 47:42our digital partner, Grassroots Digital Marketing Studio.
- 47:45They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google, on site
- 47:48SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 47:51You can get your free report by visiting Grassroots
- 47:54digitalstudio.com/freewebsite Dash Report.
- 47:59Now back to the episode. All right, so let's get into it.
- 48:03Let's get into know the enemy Wake Forest.
- 48:05So we play 330 ACC Network Lane Stadium.
- 48:09It is homecoming weekend. Sheldon, before I get into this,
- 48:12are you going down for Homecoming weekend?
- 48:14Unfortunately no. I have this thing called work
- 48:16which protects me from doing that.
- 48:20The whole damn work work, man. Forget work.
- 48:24The one, the one Drive back, the one drive back to working in
- 48:27sports is that you do have to work weekends most of the time.
- 48:31So that's just that's just a price you pay.
- 48:33The price you pay. All right, well, I'm sorry you
- 48:36can't go for homecoming weekend. I know.
- 48:37I've got. I've got a few friends here that
- 48:40are. They're they're going Thursday
- 48:41to Sunday, boys. I don't think we can get away
- 48:44with. That they're long haul of it.
- 48:45They're long haul of it. I love that shit.
- 48:47Yeah, Mason. Long haul of it man.
- 48:50I like because he's not coming Thursday night.
- 48:52That's why he he. He talked to me.
- 48:54He's like, I'll be on the road Thursday.
- 48:55I was like, all right, go do your thing, man.
- 48:58Going for it. All right, well, let's get into
- 49:00it and let's talk about the offense.
- 49:02Let's get into talk about the skiing.
- 49:04Let's talk about Warren Rogero scheme and little little nugget
- 49:08here. DDYI did or DYK did.
- 49:12You know Warren Go in 1990? Seven 1998 was the head coach of
- 49:17Glenville State. Guess who was the offensive line
- 49:22coach? I'm guessing Ron Crook.
- 49:26Ron Crook was the offensive line coach.
- 49:28So a little, a little nugget there.
- 49:31Two guys that go way back. So Brian, let's take a look.
- 49:34What do we have here from this game and?
- 49:38This is still your classic Wake Forest slow mesh RPO.
- 49:43Not a whole lot has changed on that front.
- 49:46Little bit of a less commitment to the the run game from that
- 49:50that slow mesh than previous iterations.
- 49:54Still very prevalent though, but you're going to see a little bit
- 49:55more of a mix of outside zone pistol and some other run calls
- 49:59kind of mixed in there with that slow mesh game.
- 50:02And the past game is absolutely predicated off of a successful
- 50:06rushing attack. So if they're not able to run
- 50:08the football, then none of the other stuff really works very
- 50:10well all. Right, Tally.
- 50:15Who are you leading off with tonight?
- 50:17So I guess, you know, part of that slow mesh and being able to
- 50:20run and throw the football would be the quarterback.
- 50:23So their quarterback is a Virginia, kid is Mitch
- 50:27Griffiths. He is 511, about 193.
- 50:33He's from what broad run in Ashburn, VA class of 2022.
- 50:40He committed really early to Wake Forest.
- 50:44He had offers from not super big offers.
- 50:47But again, I think it's because he committed so early.
- 50:51Appalachian State. Harvard.
- 50:53Kent State. I think he had a West Virginia
- 50:55offer as well, but he committed to Wake Forest in 2018.
- 51:03He was a composite 3 star, 87 guy, so you know, a little bit
- 51:08higher on the three star level. He was #17 in Virginia when his
- 51:15class came out and he was the number 22 dual threat
- 51:21quarterback. That's what they were calling
- 51:23them. And for this year he is 9
- 51:29touchdowns, 5 interceptions. He's got about 11:50 in yards.
- 51:39Yeah, that's all I got on him. Brown, what you got?
- 51:43Yeah, I mean, he's, he's kind of your typical Wake Forest
- 51:45quarterback. He doesn't have that elite.
- 51:49Type of arm that you see from Sam Hartman, so you're taking a
- 51:53step back on that front, but he still could cook pretty well in
- 51:57the short and intermediate passes, especially when he gets
- 52:00a clean pocket. Doesn't really throw on the run
- 52:03much despite being a threat with his legs, but he is he is really
- 52:07slippery between the tackles when he keeps it on those.
- 52:12Those reeds in the slow mesh, so that's something to look out
- 52:15for. I would definitely say he's more
- 52:17dangerous with his legs than his arm in terms of getting
- 52:21consistent first downs and moving the six.
- 52:25Not a great deep ball, but he will take a shot here or there
- 52:28and have some success and we'll sometimes keep on the RPO when
- 52:34he probably should then get. Sacked or hit unnecessarily,
- 52:37creating some situations where that ball is kind of floating
- 52:39out of that backfield and give us some opportunities for some
- 52:42interceptions as you noted tally with those that touchdown
- 52:46interception ratio. Now, Sheldon, you said you got a
- 52:50little, a little more deeper numbers on this kid.
- 52:54Yeah. So again, this is a situation
- 52:56where the stats kind of line up with what Brian was talking
- 52:58about, so. Mitch Griffiths has not had a
- 53:01great season. A second lowest graded
- 53:02quarterback in the ACC, ahead of only Anthony Calandra of UVA,
- 53:06who's been kind of in and out of the starting lineup.
- 53:08Not a ton of big time throws. They are most effective in short
- 53:11passing, so that's zero to 9 yards.
- 53:13They don't throw the ball deep a ton.
- 53:17Second, he is the second most Sachs quarterback in the Power
- 53:20Five, behind only Sugar Sanders of Colorado.
- 53:23So we'll get into some of the office line stuff that's not
- 53:26just enough to find. It's also in quick play and some
- 53:28other blocking as well. And in terms of their passing
- 53:33structure, not a ton of screens. They do not throw behind the
- 53:36last scrimmage much at all. Like I said, it's not just that
- 53:39short to intermediate passing game that works for Wake.
- 53:43All right, so let's talk about the next part of the slow mesh,
- 53:46and that's gonna be the running back room.
- 53:48And I wanna make a real quick point here, the gentleman I'm.
- 53:52Going to bring up first is usually partnered with a guy by
- 53:55the name of Justice Ellison. Justice is currently going
- 53:58through an ankle injury. He suffered it at the Georgia
- 54:01Tech game where he went for over 130 yards, played the first
- 54:04series of the Clemson game and basically rolled it up again, is
- 54:07what Clawson said. So and and from so the look of
- 54:10it, it is going to be this guy who Cali Shocker, another
- 54:15Virginia kid. We another Virginia kid?
- 54:21Yeah, Demond Claiborne out of King William.
- 54:25Shout out Derek, by the way, Brian.
- 54:27Yeah, running King William. Shout out my my wife's former
- 54:30employer. You're for exactly so composite,
- 54:35excuse me, 4 star player coming out was a 93 per 247 ranked in
- 54:40the top 150, a top 10 running back, a top five player in the
- 54:43state when he committed back in the class of 2022.
- 54:48So he is relatively a young buck there.
- 54:51He is 5 foot nine, he is £200 and right now having a pretty
- 54:56solid season out of the gate. 82 carries, 371 yards, 3
- 55:02touchdowns, only a couple receptions there.
- 55:04So, Brian, what are we seeing from Devin Claiborne?
- 55:10Yeah, as you noticed the you know he was partnering with the
- 55:13with Justice Ellison there. So he hasn't got it as much run
- 55:17as a normal lead backwood. He he's dynamic.
- 55:21You know, he's caught the ball a couple times out of the
- 55:22backfield. He he's done a little bit with
- 55:24it every time he's caught it. They just don't do that very
- 55:27often in that offense. So that's kind of why you're not
- 55:30seeing that finishes, runs hard, really solid vision at the point
- 55:34of attack. I wouldn't call him a big play
- 55:37threat. He's not somebody that's going
- 55:39to hit a ton of home runs, but he is that guy that can gash you
- 55:42for those. You know 15 to 25 yarders if if
- 55:46if you're not get if you're not getting in the gaps man he can
- 55:49still put up some some gas plays on you but he shouldn't be a
- 55:53home run threat and unless we you know pull what we did
- 55:56against FSU that last 85 yarders so but he will he has put the
- 56:01ball in the turf a couple times that that started I think it was
- 56:05his first drive there against Clemson put the ball in the turf
- 56:08there so. There's some potential to get
- 56:11maybe a turnover there, but overall a solid back for them.
- 56:15All right, Sean, I know you said you had most of the offense.
- 56:17You got some deeper numbers on Claiborne as well.
- 56:20Yeah, 74 overall grade, which is pretty solid.
- 56:23It hasn't translated to yards per rush.
- 56:26Wake hasn't been great. There's a team rushing
- 56:29Claiborne, not a big yards after contact guy.
- 56:31You'll see a lot of gap runs proportion.
- 56:33I think he has the most gap scheme runs in the entire ACC
- 56:37among running backs. And he's not been great in pass
- 56:40protection, 7 pressures allowed. So that's again talking about
- 56:43the SAC rates. That's a big reason why Wake
- 56:46Forest has allowed so many sacks.
- 56:47It's not just the ups of line, it's also been the running backs
- 56:50and press protection as well. All righty, Good deal.
- 56:53More to know about Devin Claiborne, the running back.
- 56:56Definitely someone we will probably see get quite a few
- 56:58carries on Saturday. I'm gonna flip next to the wide
- 57:01receiver room because once again, it's a Virginia kid.
- 57:06Yep. There's a theme here.
- 57:08There is a. Theme.
- 57:10There's a theme here and his name is Jamal Banks.
- 57:14Now, he did not go to school in Virginia though, he went up to
- 57:18Saint Francis. When he came out in 2020 he was
- 57:22an 85, considered a, you know, like a 1200 ranked player.
- 57:28So way back there. And when he came out it was only
- 57:31six £370.00, so kind of long and lanky.
- 57:35Now this kid's grown. He's 64, he's 208 pounds Now he
- 57:39is a big kid and so far this year with Jamal Banks, he has
- 57:461/3 of the receptions of all the past midscripts as this
- 57:49completed. Just think about it with tech
- 57:53between Wells and drones. The closest is 17%.
- 57:58Jalen Lane has 17% of the calls called, so he's double what
- 58:01lanes get. So clearly he is their number
- 58:04one ride receiver. And with that 32 catches, 331
- 58:08yards, 3 touchdowns. Brian, based on the size and we
- 58:14kind of start doing the numbers at 10 to catch, I got a feeling
- 58:18you're going to talk about. I got a feeling I know what
- 58:21you're going to say about this kid.
- 58:23Yeah, I mean he's their stick mover.
- 58:25He's the guy that they run a lot of those re routes in the the
- 58:28slomash RPO. So he's going to be the guy that
- 58:31they're hitting on those a lot. But they do like to send him out
- 58:35on kind of a go or fade down the sideline.
- 58:39He uses his size that they'll do that a lot.
- 58:40When they get kind of in plus territory in the red zone, you
- 58:44start seeing those type of routes but usually between the.
- 58:48The 30s, you're going to see a lot more of the the intermediate
- 58:50stuff and trying to get them to matriculate the ball down the
- 58:53field a little bit and like a lot of cloths and wide
- 58:56receivers, he's a good stock blocker, so he he's going to do
- 59:00some blocking outside to try to open up some rushing lanes to
- 59:03and. What about banks, Mr. Moss?
- 59:096th size grade skill player in the ACC probably hasn't gotten
- 59:14the ball as much as he would have liked.
- 59:16Again, not targeted a lot on deep throws you're supposed to
- 59:19gonna see that short zero to 9 yard range.
- 59:21So that's kind of where they work.
- 59:25All right, it's crazy. He's 6 and you expect him to get
- 59:29the ball more because, I mean a third of all the passes
- 59:31completed. I'd love to hear his target
- 59:33numbers, but. If you're looking for a deep
- 59:37thread and like Brian said, they don't throw it deep, keep an eye
- 59:40on Wesley Grimes. Grimes is averaging over 20 a
- 59:43catch from them, so he might be their big play guy.
- 59:47But we're going to flip real quick here and we're going to
- 59:49talk about the offensive line. I know Shelton has some stuff,
- 59:53so Sheldon, I'll let you leave. What do you have as far as their
- 59:55offensive line goes? And then Brian, you can do the
- 59:58technical stuff. Yeah, so it was kind of a tough
- 1:00:01unit for me to analyze just because there's lots of
- 1:00:03conflicting statistics. So First off, I had done this
- 1:00:07research a while back Virginia. Second, Wake Forest are the only
- 1:00:10ACC schools that have 3 starters who had no prior starting FBS
- 1:00:15experience. So for a full season, that is.
- 1:00:18So obviously with that, there's some growing pains.
- 1:00:20But Despite that fact, they've had had some pretty impressive
- 1:00:23individual standouts. Left guard Michael Jerkins,
- 1:00:26highest grade lineman in the conference, the tackle Spencer
- 1:00:29Clap, the highest grade run blocker.
- 1:00:32And then on the flip side, the worst grade office of lineman is
- 1:00:36right tackle Eric Russell, but he's still around average, so in
- 1:00:39terms of individual performances it's been pretty solid.
- 1:00:43Now with that being said, Wake Forest has generated almost 0
- 1:00:47explosive run plays. They've got a few in the kind of
- 1:00:50that 10 plus range, but in terms of like the 20 plus to 30 plus
- 1:00:53yard gains they have, they're very few and far in between and
- 1:00:56part of that could be running backs as well.
- 1:00:59Their success rate as an office line is you know a solid okay.
- 1:01:03But again it's just about those running backs not being able to
- 1:01:05get those those big, big gainers, they're, you know,
- 1:01:10they're struggling to finish drives, they don't really
- 1:01:12convert you know points per drive inside the 40 particularly
- 1:01:16well and they've also given up a lot of havoc.
- 1:01:18So havoc rate is mainly looking at sacks and tackles for loss
- 1:01:24and basically negative plays. So they've been, they've been
- 1:01:26pretty bad there too. You know I'd say overall again
- 1:01:30it's it's hard to judge because their their individual off to
- 1:01:34line grades are solid, but it just hasn't translated to team
- 1:01:39success I guess and again there's lots of reasons for that
- 1:01:42but you know certainly the the share the plan is kind of spread
- 1:01:46around pretty evenly all. Right.
- 1:01:48Brian, what'd you see on the tape?
- 1:01:50Yeah, I mean, it kind of backs up what Shelton's bringing there
- 1:01:52from a statistical standpoint. You know, they're not elite, but
- 1:01:57I'd say overall fundamentally sound.
- 1:01:59They play for the play with pretty solid fundamentals,
- 1:02:01especially in the run game. They're not going to overwhelm
- 1:02:04the defense, but they don't really miss a ton of assignments
- 1:02:06either. So they usually get some some
- 1:02:10pretty, you know, solid rushes. They're not falling behind the
- 1:02:13six, even if they're not necessarily getting those, you
- 1:02:16know, four or five yarders that you'd like to see to start it.
- 1:02:18Start a drive out and they they don't allow a ton of negative
- 1:02:22run plays but they will give up a lot of that in the in the
- 1:02:26passing game. So sacks you know QB hits things
- 1:02:32like that so pressures so that that's something to look out
- 1:02:35for. Especially with that slow mesh
- 1:02:37you're you're definitely going to see that there'll be some
- 1:02:39opportunities there if we can, you know kind of pinch them on
- 1:02:42the edges being able to to force Griffiths into some some rough
- 1:02:46situations there in the backfield.
- 1:02:48And what y'all are saying about the offensive line as far as the
- 1:02:51havoc you you spent in that Sheldon, they rank 127 in sacks
- 1:02:55allowed. They're giving up 4 1/2 sacks
- 1:02:57for her game and 22 sacks, 136 yards worth of loss.
- 1:03:03And they I didn't get a chance to look at the TfL and the other
- 1:03:06points you make about Sheldon. They're a good they're a solid
- 1:03:09running king, but this is what will catch your eye.
- 1:03:11They ranked 60th. We take 60th right now in the
- 1:03:14country. About 100 and 61162 yards.
- 1:03:19Here's a kicker though, They're one of the only teams in that
- 1:03:22kind of statistical range that average under 4 yards of carry.
- 1:03:26They're at 3.93. Go to what Sheldon just said.
- 1:03:30They don't explode. It is a slow grind, so
- 1:03:34definitely some opportunities there on the offensive side of
- 1:03:37the ball. Again, it's more of, to me,
- 1:03:40they're like the little engine that could, right?
- 1:03:42If. They're going to beat you.
- 1:03:43They're going to matriculate it. But you don't feel on 3rd down I
- 1:03:46was. Going to say, yeah, it's just
- 1:03:47kind of like it's what you expect out of out of Clawson's
- 1:03:51team. Like he's just a fundamentally
- 1:03:54sound coach. He's always got a well coach
- 1:03:57team. They usually do the small things
- 1:04:00right, You know, they don't overwhelm you with Flash, but he
- 1:04:06always has a solid team. So again, we can't take them
- 1:04:10lightly. All the stuff that we're talking
- 1:04:12about is what? I'm sure the coaches are looking
- 1:04:15at it and and and are going to have to correct.
- 1:04:17So I think Brian just said it. You got to get off the field on
- 1:04:213rd down. You got to because they're
- 1:04:25probably going to be in a lot of 3rd and fours, you know 3rd and
- 1:04:30threes because of how they play and you got to give yourself a
- 1:04:35chance. You got to get off the field.
- 1:04:38Alright, and the other point is you you mentioned that, but it's
- 1:04:41also Sheldon again everything's. Job and with some of the stats
- 1:04:45120th and tackle for loss, they're giving up eight tackles
- 1:04:48for loss. Again, I want 15.
- 1:04:52I want 15 combined sacks. Tackle for loss in this case.
- 1:04:56Hey. We do.
- 1:04:57That should be no problem. We're going to flip over to the
- 1:05:02defensive side of the ball. Now.
- 1:05:04Let's talk about that. Let's talk about Brad Lambert,
- 1:05:07someone JC Price very familiar with because he was this
- 1:05:09defensive coordinator while JC was down at Marshall.
- 1:05:13Brian, what sort of scheme is Mr. Lambert running here?
- 1:05:18Yeah, this is a 4/3. They've got a stand up edge that
- 1:05:21they use versus having two guys with their hand in the dirt.
- 1:05:27You know, looking at Lambert, I mean really everywhere he's
- 1:05:29been, the defense is kind of taking a step forward.
- 1:05:31So solid, solid coordinator, does a good job of getting a
- 1:05:37good amount out of the talent that he's given, especially at
- 1:05:39those stops. So, and this is a return trip
- 1:05:42for him to wake for us. He was there a couple years back
- 1:05:44as well, so he's circling back home a little bit here.
- 1:05:49All righty. Well, let's.
- 1:05:50Talk about some of the players. And we're going to start with
- 1:05:53Jacob Roberts. Jacob Roberts actually a portal
- 1:05:59guy, he was one of the top linebackers in the country.
- 1:06:02He was played down at North Carolina AT literally right next
- 1:06:06door down there to Wake Forest, both in the Triad and he is from
- 1:06:11Mallard Creek. That's a damn good high school
- 1:06:13down in the Charlotte area now. And so far this season Really
- 1:06:19racking up the stats. 40 total tackles, 6 1/2 tackles for loss,
- 1:06:24including that are 5 sacks. Also has a forced fumble.
- 1:06:28So definitely a a dynamic player from the stat wise.
- 1:06:35What's the tape say, Brian? Yeah, I mean he's he's really
- 1:06:39good at avoiding blockers and making tackles in the run game.
- 1:06:44Solid pursuit. Takes good angles.
- 1:06:47But you know, overall I'd say he's not really good in
- 1:06:49coverage, especially if he gets matched up in man
- 1:06:51responsibilities. Not very good at that.
- 1:06:55That area. They will use him on blitzes.
- 1:06:59He'll get, he'll get after the quarterback solid in that area
- 1:07:04of his game, but nothing that I would say would be scary.
- 1:07:08But. But he will get after the passer
- 1:07:09a little bit. So just probably some opportune
- 1:07:12timed. Blitzes, Yeah.
- 1:07:14It's more kind of scheme based. It's not, it's not anything he
- 1:07:17does necessarily at the lead level, but between the scheme
- 1:07:23and his, just his ability, he's able to, you know, make some
- 1:07:26plays here or there. Good deal.
- 1:07:27Anything deeper in the stats, Shelton on this guy?
- 1:07:31Yeah, he's really good at pass rush around the 81 grade.
- 1:07:34He's got 8 pressures in the season, which is pretty good for
- 1:07:36a linebacker. OK, interesting.
- 1:07:38So definitely we it correlates with that blitzing that.
- 1:07:42It might be his biggest strong suit and something we need to
- 1:07:44watch out for, especially with the way our line sometimes plays
- 1:07:49Tally who's next? We got Jay Sheen Davis.
- 1:07:53He's from Snellville, GA Class of 2020.
- 1:07:58Went to Shiloh High School, I think it's called.
- 1:08:01He was a four-star guy, 2474 star guy, rated a 90 out of high
- 1:08:09school. Top 500 guy.
- 1:08:12It looks like 479 in the nation coming out of high school.
- 1:08:17He has some pretty decent offers.
- 1:08:19You know, Arkansas's in there. He had offers from Virginia
- 1:08:22Tech. He had offers from, I think LSU
- 1:08:26was in there just about the whole ACC as well as Penn State,
- 1:08:32Michigan. So he has some pretty decent
- 1:08:34offers for what it looked like, 6-3. 63235 coming out of high
- 1:08:41school, I think he's right at about 25 tackles this year, 4
- 1:08:481/2 sacks. So I mean, he's getting in the
- 1:08:50backfield. He is causing some chaos.
- 1:08:53Brian, what you got on him? Yeah, so I talked about the edge
- 1:08:57players. One's the stand up, one's the
- 1:08:59hand of the dirt. He's the hand of the dirt.
- 1:09:01Guy uses his hands really well to shed blockers and get after
- 1:09:05the quarterback. They they like moving him
- 1:09:08around. He's strong enough to play like
- 1:09:11they slide him inside to a three or a four.
- 1:09:14Eye technique holds up really well when they shift the front
- 1:09:17for those blitz looks that they like to bring.
- 1:09:19And I definitely say overall he's their best defensive player
- 1:09:22all. Right.
- 1:09:25Any any extras on this one? Shelton, another guy that's also
- 1:09:29very good in pass rush, top five grad in ACC and he's also pretty
- 1:09:35good in the run game, looking up the grade right now.
- 1:09:40Yeah. So, so pretty solid in the run
- 1:09:41game and really good in pass rush.
- 1:09:42Kind of like like the case for for Jacob Roberts it.
- 1:09:47Looks like we're looking at their right players and we're
- 1:09:51gonna talk about one more guy. Let's go to the back end of this
- 1:09:53and let's talk about the Shawn Jones.
- 1:09:57Deshaun Jones was a low three star when he came out in 2021.
- 1:10:03You take a look at his offer list.
- 1:10:05The other most exciting offer is probably Kansas.
- 1:10:10Some some SCS offers got like Elon on there, so not a huge
- 1:10:14offer. List was ranked way down and he
- 1:10:18was an 83 when he came out of Mount Saint Joseph High School
- 1:10:23out of Baltimore, MD, but so far this season.
- 1:10:27He's having a really good 115 total tackles.
- 1:10:30He is leading the ACC and interceptions with three in last
- 1:10:35season as a richer freshman. 5 past deflections So clearly
- 1:10:42maybe a little bit of a hawk here.
- 1:10:44Brian. What's the tape saying on the
- 1:10:46Sean Jones. Yeah, he.
- 1:10:48Plays primarily lines up at that left corner, back position.
- 1:10:52Definitely his best overall cover corner on the team.
- 1:10:56I'd give him a higher grade in man coverage than zone, but he's
- 1:11:00pretty solid in both. I'd call him a willing tackler,
- 1:11:05but he's also a guy that will miss tackles when he kind of
- 1:11:08gets his nose in there. And I'd say he could be a little
- 1:11:11more physical when when playing the ball versus trying to get in
- 1:11:17there to to to get the interception.
- 1:11:20There's there's some opportunities where.
- 1:11:23If he was a little more physical there, you might get a pass
- 1:11:26breakup versus the the reception so but definitely their overall
- 1:11:32best defensive back and pretty solid cover corner.
- 1:11:36Right. Anything additional on him,
- 1:11:38Shelton? No.
- 1:11:41He actually, oddly enough, it was kind of a weird situation
- 1:11:44because he did not grade particularly well.
- 1:11:47I would say more so since the Elon game which is you know the
- 1:11:49first game of the season. But he is a big tackler and
- 1:11:53he'll get some some few stops here and there coverage wise,
- 1:11:57pretty solid run, a 66 pass rating against which you know
- 1:12:01it's, I mean that's a that's a pretty good number.
- 1:12:04So he's he's good in coverage. Alrighty, so there are some of
- 1:12:08the defensive players and some ideas of what we should see
- 1:12:12scheme wise from the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Saturday
- 1:12:15afternoon. Let's roll to it.
- 1:12:18Next, boys, Let's talk about the hokey keys.
- 1:12:20I'm gonna start at the bottom here.
- 1:12:21Shelton, what is one of your big keys for the game on Saturday?
- 1:12:27Well, put me on the spot early, I would say kind of what I
- 1:12:32talked about last week, success on early downs.
- 1:12:34Defensively Wake Forest tends to struggle a lot on those early
- 1:12:38down situations and I feel like with the way they're passing
- 1:12:41offensive structured you can get them in you know third long test
- 1:12:44may pretty big because they just they just don't have the I would
- 1:12:47say downfield passing attack required to convert those.
- 1:12:51You know this obvious passing downs with the way that Griffith
- 1:12:53has struggled the way their their offensive line has been
- 1:12:56hit or missed and pass protection.
- 1:12:58I just think the the the easiest way to win this game is get them
- 1:13:01an obvious passing downs all. Right, give them an obvious pass
- 1:13:05and then tally. What about for you?
- 1:13:06What are some keys you thinking about in this game?
- 1:13:08You got to get QB one involved, man.
- 1:13:10You got to get QB One involved in the running game early.
- 1:13:15You know we don't need to come out and unless you're coming out
- 1:13:18throwing a bomb on the first play, trying to just catch
- 1:13:21somebody sleeping, we need to come out and we need to run the
- 1:13:24ball. We need to come out and we need
- 1:13:25to get car and drones involved in the run games.
- 1:13:28And also roll that pocket for him because he looks pretty good
- 1:13:31when we rolled a pocket and he's kind of throwing on the run.
- 1:13:36All righty, Brian. What about you?
- 1:13:41No rushes over 30 yards this week. 30 yards. 30 yards,
- 1:13:47capital to 30. That's a pretty big key, so I
- 1:13:52ain't mad at him. That is a big key and and I'm
- 1:13:56I'm all kind of piggyback something that we've been
- 1:13:59talking about. We got to start fast.
- 1:14:01You talking about that bomb Tally.
- 1:14:03Let's throw the bomb. Let's look at Felton going deep
- 1:14:05early. Or catching with a big play
- 1:14:07early. I think that is going to help.
- 1:14:10I think it'll help even more because now we know how this
- 1:14:13team is paced. The other piece is I think we've
- 1:14:16got to force some turnovers. We see Griffiths obviously will
- 1:14:20throw some picks. We obviously know Claiborne will
- 1:14:25put some on the ground. So to me, very key that we get
- 1:14:32at least one. I'd like to see two.
- 1:14:35But we've got to win it. We cannot give them the
- 1:14:37opportunities because of how they play the game and then
- 1:14:41getting the ball off turnovers. It's going to put us at a
- 1:14:44disadvantage because I know they're going to want to slow it
- 1:14:46down and it'll be interesting to see how that goes.
- 1:14:50I mean it's it's lining up good for us as far as what we're
- 1:14:55seeing, what we're good at, what they're not good at, what they
- 1:14:57are good at. It's this is the team that's
- 1:15:01coming to our house that we can be.
- 1:15:04This is going to be a big week. I said it on Twitter earlier
- 1:15:07this week. This not more than any other
- 1:15:10game. But you know, this is going to
- 1:15:12be one of the more important games for Pride this year
- 1:15:14because where we're at right now, we're two and four.
- 1:15:19Everybody expected you to lose to Florida State.
- 1:15:23Everybody did. Nobody expected you to win.
- 1:15:25So it wasn't a huge backlash on losing that game.
- 1:15:29People are going to critique it, but this Wake team is coming to
- 1:15:32your house. The line has shifted.
- 1:15:34We opened up as 3 point underdogs I think and the line
- 1:15:38has shifted to now we're favorite I think 1 1/2 points.
- 1:15:43Vegas knows something. The hokey fans know something
- 1:15:47that fucking coaching staff better know something.
- 1:15:50You get out there, you're at home, you use the crowd, you go
- 1:15:54beat them. You need to go and beat this
- 1:15:56team from starter game to the finish of the game.
- 1:15:59Like you don't need to be in no fucking hell game with them.
- 1:16:02Because Clawson is a good coach and his team is going to be well
- 1:16:06coached. So this is, and the reason I say
- 1:16:09it's a very important game for pride because when you're going
- 1:16:12to get a coach like him, you got out coaching.
- 1:16:15So for pride he can show that he can out coach good coaches in
- 1:16:19this game all. Righty.
- 1:16:22Well, let's get into it, because now we got to make our
- 1:16:24predictions here. And and make some big strangers,
- 1:16:28because as always, we are watching a lot more than just
- 1:16:31the hoagies game. Just it's who we are.
- 1:16:33And the big Screener segment is presented by Price Picks.
- 1:16:36Price Picks, a daily fantasy app where you make entries based on
- 1:16:40player projected outcomes. I've got nothing this week
- 1:16:44because I have not had a chance to look.
- 1:16:45I've been actually scaveraging the waiver wire.
- 1:16:48Or anything I can find in fantasy because Justin Jefferson
- 1:16:51went down. Give me Gino Smith for more than
- 1:16:55248 1/2. So who?
- 1:16:57They playing. They are playing Cincinnati.
- 1:17:02Cincinnati, yeah. You'll see that happening, yeah.
- 1:17:04All right. There's Brian, he said.
- 1:17:06That's the one he's going with, so.
- 1:17:10You know, go on there. It's really cool.
- 1:17:11It's really easy to go on there and especially when you can use
- 1:17:15our BC Pics sign up code where they will match any deposit up
- 1:17:19to $100. When you use that code, use the
- 1:17:21QR code you see there. Or go to boundarycornerbc.com
- 1:17:24back slash BC pics. Just a real quick, brief
- 1:17:29synopsis last week Brian 3, two and one.
- 1:17:33Shelton four, one and one. Tally 2-3 and one and myself
- 1:17:37four, one and one. Fade, tally, whatever Tally says
- 1:17:42when we get to the big screeners, go the opposite way.
- 1:17:46Wait, Tally, I'm going to throw it to you first.
- 1:17:47When it comes to predicting this hokey game right now.
- 1:17:51There's the line right there. What do you think?
- 1:17:55You know, I wanted to fade myself because that's just what
- 1:17:58I wanted to do. But I got the hokeys winning
- 1:18:01this thing, and I'm going to go ahead and give you a score
- 1:18:03prediction. I got the hokeys taking this
- 1:18:05game 2414. All right.
- 1:18:09Crime's going to be in it. We're at home.
- 1:18:12Y'all got all maroon. Well, we'll talk about that off
- 1:18:16the cab. I guess with Curtis you got
- 1:18:18mostly maroon. Mostly, not all maroon.
- 1:18:21Mostly. Maroon, Curtis said.
- 1:18:22Fuck them stripes. You got mostly maroon.
- 1:18:26Go win the game. Go win the game.
- 1:18:29Crime. What about you?
- 1:18:31I am, as always. I'm going with the Hokies, man.
- 1:18:35I think this is a a good opportunity to get back on the
- 1:18:38right track. It's going to put them in a
- 1:18:40position where they still have an outside shot at making a bowl
- 1:18:44this season. This is not a very good Wake
- 1:18:47Forest team. This is not probably the worst
- 1:18:49Wake Forest team we've probably seen in at least probably four
- 1:18:52or five years. So this is an opportunity.
- 1:18:56Yeah, Sam Harvey's out there. This is an opportunity to punch
- 1:19:00him in the mouth a little bit and get back on track.
- 1:19:04Right. Brian with the win as well.
- 1:19:05Sheldon, what about you? Even the Hokie is straight up
- 1:19:082421. I think Wake Forest is really
- 1:19:10beatable. I think their offense is not
- 1:19:12great and I think Phil Dare's pain is going to cook.
- 1:19:15As the Katie's would say. Give me the Hokies.
- 1:19:18I forgot I didn't give my prediction 3127 Hokies. 3127
- 1:19:22Hokies got it all right. I'm with y'all back on the
- 1:19:26Choosing the Hokie train. Again I I I think the way the
- 1:19:31offense the defensive line excuse me, played last week
- 1:19:35getting pressure on Jordan Travis and getting pressure
- 1:19:41against a much better defensive line definitely carries the
- 1:19:43Hokies through that and I think to what we said, I think you
- 1:19:47know the the the run defense for Wake is solid but I think we can
- 1:19:52break some give me Hokies 3123. So we we we win and we cover.
- 1:20:01All righty. Now we get to go to the big
- 1:20:04screeners. It is actually some sneaky good
- 1:20:07games this week. I still don't think it beat a
- 1:20:08couple weeks ago, but still some sneaky good games in mind.
- 1:20:13I am going with the Miami Hurricanes versus the North
- 1:20:17Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina is laying 3 1/2
- 1:20:22at home in this game and I might be crazy but.
- 1:20:28And everything I keep thinking about what happened with Miami
- 1:20:31and Georgia Tech, I feel like they were looking forward to the
- 1:20:34game against Carolina because it was supposed to be 5 and O
- 1:20:36versus 5 and O2 top 15 teams. And for just a split second,
- 1:20:43Mario Cristobal thought about that and handed the ball off
- 1:20:46instead of taking a knee. I don't know who wins this game,
- 1:20:49but I think it's going to be a tight battle.
- 1:20:51We saw Miami absolutely annihilate Texas A and M down at
- 1:20:55home, and I know that was at home.
- 1:20:57It ain't much of A home field advantage down there because
- 1:21:00they'd only show up when they're like 7:00 and 9:00 and oh,
- 1:21:03anything less than that. Miami fans don't show up, but I
- 1:21:06think it's going to be close enough where I will take 3 1/2
- 1:21:09points and let it ride. Give me EU to Alley.
- 1:21:14Who you got on this one? Like Curtis said, Curtis said.
- 1:21:19You know, they, they might have been looking ahead, you know,
- 1:21:22and coach handed the ball off. But it was a lot of stuff
- 1:21:24happened after that. They handed the ball off, they
- 1:21:27fumbled, they got on defense. They gave up a big play.
- 1:21:31They knew they had to not let a man get in the end zone.
- 1:21:34Then they gave up another play, got behind everybody.
- 1:21:36It wasn't even the hell, Mary. He was just open.
- 1:21:39They're going to go into Chapel Hill and they're going to get
- 1:21:41their ass beat. That's what they're going up
- 1:21:44there. They're going up there.
- 1:21:45They're losing. Like Senator was on the sideline
- 1:21:48crying, asking them what the fuck are we doing?
- 1:21:52He's still saying that all week. So are you Shelton?
- 1:22:00Yeah, I think there's going to be a little bit of a a clash of
- 1:22:03culture, so to speak, in that Miami locker room.
- 1:22:05I think they're going to come in a little bit dazed into Keenan
- 1:22:09Memorial. I think Unc's going to lay a
- 1:22:10smack in on him. So I got UNC all right.
- 1:22:14And you know what? We're going to make it three in
- 1:22:16a row here. I I think that UNC is going to
- 1:22:19handle some business. I think Miami, I think really
- 1:22:23got exposed a little bit against Georgia Tech.
- 1:22:27I don't think some of what we saw was a fluke.
- 1:22:30And I think that UNC's offense is just going to be too much for
- 1:22:33them. All righty, got it.
- 1:22:37Everybody's got the name on the line now, so no crying about it
- 1:22:40on Saturday night. Ally, you picked the next one
- 1:22:44and Tally's going way, way, way out West to Husky Stadium and
- 1:22:51the Puget Sound 75,000 plus. You know, this is an interesting
- 1:22:59game, and I haven't watched a ton of of Washington games, but
- 1:23:04I know that they're that quarterback Sabala.
- 1:23:09Matter of fact, I think he left Indiana, right?
- 1:23:12So Justin Fuente fits White in now.
- 1:23:15They run quarterbacks off and then they go somewhere else and
- 1:23:17have Heisman careers. Perfect job.
- 1:23:20I'm taking Oregon in this game. I just think Oregon's going to
- 1:23:23be the better team and and they're going to win the game.
- 1:23:28All righty, Sheldon, you're up next on this one.
- 1:23:31This is going to be an awesome game, but I'm going to take
- 1:23:34Oregon. I had a tough time picking it
- 1:23:36because I think you got two really good teams, but I just
- 1:23:38like Bo Nicks. And I think Washington's going
- 1:23:41to come out a little bit too empt up with their home crowd.
- 1:23:43So give me Oregon, Brian. I've got Oregon, too.
- 1:23:49I think that the Huskies have probably the better quarterback
- 1:23:53overall, but I think that Oregon top to bottom is the better team
- 1:23:57and they're going to get it done.
- 1:24:00You talk about that home field advantage, it is a home field
- 1:24:03advantage at Custi Stadium. I think the Huskies come out and
- 1:24:07win this game by more than three points.
- 1:24:09I think by touchdown. I think Michael Pennix has some
- 1:24:11moments. And by the way, y'all y'all
- 1:24:14didn't listen to Tally's advice. He said fade him, not go with
- 1:24:17him on picks. They did it.
- 1:24:20They did it before we got on there.
- 1:24:22They didn't know. They didn't know what you were
- 1:24:24picking. All right, Brian, What is your
- 1:24:28game of the week, Sir? Yeah, I've got the, I've got
- 1:24:32UCLA. Oregon State, Oregon State is
- 1:24:37laying the 3 1/2 and you know what, Oregon State, man, they're
- 1:24:43going to take care of business. I think what we saw from UCLA
- 1:24:47last week is promising, but I think Oregon State just top to
- 1:24:52bottom is going to be able to handle that, all the noise and
- 1:24:55take care of business. Yeah, I'm with you as well on
- 1:24:59this one, Brian. Give me Oregon State, I'll lay
- 1:25:00the 3 1/2. I mean, UCLA was playing wazoo
- 1:25:05last week. It was a good game.
- 1:25:08But DJU he he keeps proving over and over he want the problem at
- 1:25:14Clemson. He want the problem at Clemson.
- 1:25:19So give me the later points. Take the Beavers.
- 1:25:25Is it what I mean there? So yeah, I'm going to go with
- 1:25:28what my man Thomas Train said. I mean, I think you UCLA is
- 1:25:32playing some defense, man. You know, a lot of times we
- 1:25:35don't see defense out there. I think UCLA is playing decent
- 1:25:39defense and that's the that's the only way you're going.
- 1:25:42You're going to beat the DJ, so I'm taking UCLA.
- 1:25:47She'll wrap us up here. Take an Oregon State, because
- 1:25:50UCLA is coming off a big win, and typically I like to.
- 1:25:54Pick against team teams that are coming up.
- 1:25:55Big wins. Fade, Fade.
- 1:25:58The big wins fade. The big win, by the way.
- 1:26:02DJ Ugale. 10 touchdowns passing, 3 rushing and just three picks
- 1:26:09of 13 to 3 touchdown. The interception ratio so far
- 1:26:14this year for the four and one Beavers.
- 1:26:17Alright, Shelton, what is your game?
- 1:26:22What is in that game? We'll have to go.
- 1:26:25If I can see it, yes, USC, indeed.
- 1:26:27So another really good one. I'm taking another game because,
- 1:26:31as always, in keeping with my philosophy, they're coming off a
- 1:26:36very tough loss to Louisville. So I think they're gonna bounce
- 1:26:38back, and I think they're gonna be USC.
- 1:26:42All righty, Bron. You know what?
- 1:26:45I'm trusting this Sheldon here. I think that what we saw last
- 1:26:49week was not indicative of what. Notre Dame is capable of I think
- 1:26:54they have a good bounce back week this week.
- 1:26:56I think you see Hartman play a much better, better game this
- 1:26:59week and they take care of the Trojans.
- 1:27:04Nah, not so fast. Not so fast.
- 1:27:07They struggle with that Louisville offense, and I know
- 1:27:09Braun is a very good head coach and a very good offensive mind,
- 1:27:13but so does Lincoln Riley. And Lincoln Riley got a lot more
- 1:27:16weapons. Where is this game?
- 1:27:20I did not get a chance to look at that regardless.
- 1:27:23I'm assuming. Yeah, it's got to be at Notre
- 1:27:24Dame if they're favored by just the normal hook.
- 1:27:28Yeah, I I I don't know if I mean it could get as ugly as it did
- 1:27:31late Saturday night because it got ugly late Saturday night
- 1:27:34because that often is not clicking for Notre Dame.
- 1:27:38Take the over, whatever that is. I'll look it up while Tally
- 1:27:41gives this prediction here. Man, just watching again, I I'd
- 1:27:46really like Sam Hartman. I think he's a a good
- 1:27:48quarterback and just a good, good kid.
- 1:27:52But in a lot of games that I've watched Notre Dame, they're not
- 1:27:55scoring a lot of points. I don't think USC has a good
- 1:27:59defense, but I know they got a damn good offense.
- 1:28:02So unless Notre Dame's going to score points with them, I think.
- 1:28:07I think it's over with. I think Caleb Williams and USC
- 1:28:11goes in there and wins and the the over under is 62 1/2.
- 1:28:17I think I would take the over on that right now as we speak.
- 1:28:21That's at Notre Dame Stadium 730.
- 1:28:23Some really good set, some really good nightcap games.
- 1:28:25Carolina Miami's A nightcap game, and this next one we're
- 1:28:29going to discuss is a nightcap game.
- 1:28:30And I threw it on here because a if Duke wins this game, Mike
- 1:28:37Elko will be the Michigan State head coach.
- 1:28:40Book it if he's not already in principle signed with them so.
- 1:28:45Curtis what? You said he gone already, He
- 1:28:49gone already. He they they willing to pay
- 1:28:51somebody $100 million up there to be an average coach in plus
- 1:28:57with Elko I think he fits in that Coaching at Notre Dame for
- 1:29:00a few years. Coaching at wait for a few
- 1:29:02years. I think he fits what probably
- 1:29:04they want to do. But this game again another
- 1:29:07Saturday night game if y'all see it.
- 1:29:09Duke lay in 3 1/2. Brian, leave us off.
- 1:29:14It's Duke. I don't trust what NC State's
- 1:29:18doing on offense, so until they show me something on offense, I
- 1:29:23can't trust them anymore. So I'm going Duke here.
- 1:29:25Same, same. Even though they showed
- 1:29:27something against Marshall. We've seen you take care of a
- 1:29:31lot more talented teams late at 3 1/2.
- 1:29:34I think Duke wins by like 10. What's going on with Duke's
- 1:29:38quarterback? Not good.
- 1:29:42He's out. He's out.
- 1:29:45North Carolina State has a tackling machine over there.
- 1:29:48Whoever they put in there, if they're not ready, Peyton Wilson
- 1:29:51is going to feast. I don't think that the office is
- 1:29:55that good, but I know Duke's quarterback was the machine that
- 1:29:59drove their offense, so I'm taking North Carolina State,
- 1:30:05Sheldon last. One, yeah, yeah, it feels like
- 1:30:08Wilson's been in college for forever.
- 1:30:09But anyways, I was like, this is the type of game where, you
- 1:30:12know, a team's missing a quarterback and you think, Oh
- 1:30:14well, they're going to lose, but they come out and just play with
- 1:30:17their hair on fire. I think NC State is going to get
- 1:30:19thoroughly out coached just based on gut field, and I think
- 1:30:22Duke's going to win the game there we go.
- 1:30:25Fade there. That's what I would have did.
- 1:30:27Perfect tally we faded y'all faded me.
- 1:30:34Then we fade a tally. Yeah, good job.
- 1:30:36I blame you. Anything else breaking tonight?
- 1:30:40Hey, look, y'all like 90 minutes.
- 1:30:42We got it right on time this time.
- 1:30:43What we got right down the middle.
- 1:30:45Man, we got Sheldon working now we got to get him in bed at a
- 1:30:48good time. That's right.
- 1:30:52Needs a good eight hours. Listen, there are there are
- 1:30:54points in your life where you just sacrificed to sleep.
- 1:30:57This is one of them. This is one of the nights right
- 1:30:59here that I'll sacrifice sleep along with Sunday night.
- 1:31:04I sacrifice sleep Sunday night, boys.
- 1:31:07Yeah, you saw Kettle's fucking legacy game, man.
- 1:31:12Legacy game. Trifecta touchdowns.
- 1:31:15And I think that was our defense.
- 1:31:16Legacy game because Dallas Y'all didn't know I'm a 49ers fan, but
- 1:31:20a 49ers fan since I was a kid that was a throttling that was a
- 1:31:26beat down and I've happily stayed up and watched every snap
- 1:31:30of that game until 11:30 on Sunday to go to work on Monday.
- 1:31:34So I would have to, yeah, I had to have something that you feel
- 1:31:38good after Saturday night, especially my fantasy team ain't
- 1:31:40doing good either. Alrighty is.
- 1:31:42Anything breaking, nothing breaking.
- 1:31:45But Andrea, to keep your head up, man.
- 1:31:47I've been sending your comments. Keep your head up.
- 1:31:52I'm going to put this out here. It was tweeted about 7:30, so a
- 1:31:55little bit before Eric Hoback, who writes for Inside or
- 1:31:58Streaking the Lawn, one of the UVA sites.
- 1:32:02He is saying multiple sources close to the situation.
- 1:32:06Key UVA donors have effectively gotten the money to buy out Tony
- 1:32:10Elliott and his staff. Oh, already.
- 1:32:17Already I want him to stay there for a little while.
- 1:32:19What he doing? Yeah, he bullshitting over
- 1:32:22there. So just take that what you will.
- 1:32:27I don't know if anything's gonna come to fruition of it.
- 1:32:30Again, he's saying they've got the money to do it.
- 1:32:33The question is, do you just flip it and rip it?
- 1:32:36And who's actually going to be willing to go and coach UVA?
- 1:32:40I think that's the problem with pulling the like you know this
- 1:32:43isn't. You know USC, This isn't
- 1:32:46Florida. This isn't any you know,
- 1:32:48Tennessee. This isn't a place where you can
- 1:32:50pull the plug really quick and still attract top talent.
- 1:32:53Like this was a tough, tough job to accept without the the
- 1:32:59feeling that you're only going to get one year, two years to
- 1:33:03show what you can do before the plug gets pulled on you.
- 1:33:06So I don't know if this is the best idea just from UVA
- 1:33:11standpoint, I'm. I I would much rather say keep
- 1:33:17Tony in there because I think we're doing a much better job on
- 1:33:21the at least the things off the field compared to what what's
- 1:33:25going on over at Eva. So if we could keep that up, all
- 1:33:29the better. But if Eva wants to move on, I
- 1:33:32feel like they're going to have just as hard a time getting a
- 1:33:34quality candidate coming in there, especially after doing
- 1:33:36something like that, so. What if they get food like
- 1:33:39Thomas said? Please, please, absolutely.
- 1:33:47Yeah, he'll go prove to us that he is a good coach and he'll go
- 1:33:50win the ACC over there. I'll be pissed fucking one day.
- 1:33:56All right, well, boys, let's wrap up this episode of the
