- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Take thee again another roll, and write
- 0:05Speaker 1: it in all the former words that were in the
- 0:08Speaker 1: first roll, which Jehoakim the king of Judah hath burned.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Jeremiah 36.28 Give me the boldness to speak and proclaim
- 0:19Speaker 1: your truth, even when I face persecution from those who
- 0:24Speaker 1: feel they know better. In the same way that Jeremiah
- 0:28Speaker 1: had the confidence to stand, in the face of opposition.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I thank you that I too possess that same confidence
- 0:36Speaker 1: to stand for what is right and godly, even though
- 0:41Speaker 1: I may be the only one holding fast to your
- 0:43Speaker 1: words of truth. When society seeks to silence my words
- 0:49Speaker 1: and actions, when those in power look to burn and
- 0:53Speaker 1: destroy your truths, I thank you that your word and
- 0:58Speaker 1: your decrees are eternal and indestructible. Whereas others fold under
- 1:06Speaker 1: the pressure of the mantle of purpose, I will endure,
- 1:11Speaker 1: because you've anointed me to share your goodness and to
- 1:14Speaker 1: reach the lost in whatever environment I'm in. I declare
- 1:20Speaker 1: that revival is on us and change flows through us.
- 1:28Speaker 1: In Jesus' name. Amen. Burning the Scrolls.
- 1:58Speaker 2: In our last story, we learned about the calling of Jeremiah.
- 2:02Speaker 2: He was chosen as a prophet to bring the people
- 2:04Speaker 2: of Judah back to God. Jeremiah proclaimed the word of
- 2:08Speaker 2: God in the city streets and in front of the temple.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Much of his words fell on deaf ears. Other words
- 2:15Speaker 2: fell on angry ears. And Jeremiah was forced to feel
- 2:19Speaker 2: the blunt force of people's clubs and fists. Now we
- 2:22Speaker 2: learn about the word of Jeremiah being recorded into a
- 2:25Speaker 2: scroll and the word of God spreading for more people
- 2:28Speaker 2: to hear. However, whenever truth is proclaimed, there are those
- 2:32Speaker 2: in power who desire to repress it. Inspired by the
- 2:36Speaker 2: book of Jeremiah and 2 Kings.
- 2:42Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:44Speaker 3: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast

- 2:57Speaker 3: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:59Speaker 3: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 3:02Speaker 3: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 3:05Speaker 3: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 3:08Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 3:12Speaker 3: to get a copy of The Jesus Book, simply go
- 3:15Speaker 3: to jackgram.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:23Speaker 3: you for your support. In our last episode, we heard
- 3:27Speaker 3: of Jeremiah's call to be God's voice to the people
- 3:30Speaker 3: of Judah. Speaking God's truth can be lonely and often dangerous,
- 3:36Speaker 3: but Jeremiah was a man of courage. And even when
- 3:39Speaker 3: he was weary and tired, he still maintained the ministry
- 3:43Speaker 3: and the mission that God had given him. Today, We'll
- 3:46Speaker 3: hear more of Jeremiah's life and ministry as he proclaimed
- 3:49Speaker 3: the Word of God. His words will be recorded onto
- 3:53Speaker 3: a scroll preserved for future generations. But as we've already seen,
- 3:57Speaker 3: Jeremiah would face anger and hatred, and there would be
- 4:01Speaker 3: those trying to silence his voice and the voice of God.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So let's listen to the reading of God's Word now.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The righteous King Josiah had passed to be with his
- 4:13Speaker 2: father David. With him, the hope for a repentant Judah
- 4:16Speaker 2: grew dim. Jeremiah wasted no time. Josiah's death would set
- 4:22Speaker 2: the north in motion, and it was only a matter
- 4:24Speaker 2: of time before Babylon descended upon God's people. Jeremiah proclaimed
- 4:29Speaker 2: God's call to repentance with urgency. He stood in the
- 4:33Speaker 2: court of the Lord's house and spoke to all the cities.
- 4:36Speaker 2: He waved his hands and raised his voice, shouting for
- 4:40Speaker 2: all to turn from their ways and come back to
- 4:42Speaker 2: God before it was too late. God wanted to give
- 4:46Speaker 2: Judah every possible chance to turn away from evil. Josiah
- 4:51Speaker 2: did his best to remove all the idols from the nation,
- 4:54Speaker 2: but he could not change their hearts. Only they could
- 4:57Speaker 2: personally choose to worship and love the Lord. Despite Jeremiah's
- 5:02Speaker 2: best efforts, the Lord's warnings were not received with gladness.
- 5:06Speaker 2: In fact, Jeremiah was often met with incredible disdain, especially
- 5:11Speaker 2: from the priests. One day, Jeremiah was finishing his sermon
- 5:15Speaker 2: in front of a large crowd calling for repentance. In
- 5:19Speaker 2: the middle of his proclamation, Jeremiah saw a flurry of
- 5:22Speaker 2: temple guards come after him. Jeremiah tried to turn away,
- 5:26Speaker 2: but one of them grabbed him by the ankles.' You
- 5:28Speaker 2: shall die!' the priests yelled.' You speak as God, saying
- 5:33Speaker 2: that we will be destroyed. Who has given you the right?'
- 5:36Speaker 2: The priests were so busy focusing on their damaged egos
- 5:40Speaker 2: that they could not hear what Jeremiah was trying to
- 5:42Speaker 2: tell them. They detained him and a large crowd gathered
- 5:46Speaker 2: in the courtyard of the temple to watch. When the
- 5:49Speaker 2: king's judges and officials heard about the commotion near the
- 5:52Speaker 2: temple and came down to settle the matter. This man
- 5:55Speaker 2: deserves to die, the priests spat. You have heard it yourself,
- 6:00Speaker 2: he proclaims destruction against Judah. The officials looked at Jeremiah
- 6:05Speaker 2: and gestured for him to defend himself. The temple guards
- 6:09Speaker 2: let go of him and Jeremiah spoke again, saying, I
- 6:12Speaker 2: say nothing that has not been asked of me by
- 6:14Speaker 2: God himself. Mend your relationship with him and he will relent.
- 6:19Speaker 2: He is kind and willing to spare us if we
- 6:21Speaker 2: simply turn back to him. Jeremiah paused, looking at their
- 6:25Speaker 2: blank stares. He held up his hands and gestured for chains.
- 6:29Speaker 2: But if you truly see me as a threat... Go
- 6:32Speaker 2: ahead and detain me. Do what seems good to you,
- 6:36Speaker 2: but know that you would be shedding the blood of
- 6:38Speaker 2: an innocent man. The officials mumbled amongst themselves. Jeremiah looked
- 6:43Speaker 2: at them and then back to the priests. It was tense,
- 6:46Speaker 2: and Jeremiah did not know what would happen next. It
- 6:50Speaker 2: is clear, one of the officials began, that this man
- 6:53Speaker 2: does not deserve to die. He clearly speaks for the Lord,
- 6:57Speaker 2: as did our King Josiah before him. Jeremiah released a
- 7:01Speaker 2: sigh of relief. He was more pleased that the people
- 7:04Speaker 2: were finally beginning to understand him. Time had passed, and
- 7:09Speaker 2: Jeremiah could see a small revival blossoming. However, Jeremiah could
- 7:13Speaker 2: not shake the feeling that what the Lord was telling
- 7:16Speaker 2: him was for the future generations as well as the current.
- 7:20Speaker 2: So the Lord prompted his heart and told him to
- 7:22Speaker 2: write down all that he had told him. God's words
- 7:26Speaker 2: to Jeremiah would serve as a compass and comfort to
- 7:29Speaker 2: the captive people of Judah in the years to come.
- 7:32Speaker 2: So Jeremiah summoned Baruch, a trusted friend and scribe. Together
- 7:37Speaker 2: they wrote down all the Lord had shown Jeremiah. All
- 7:40Speaker 2: the warnings and calls for repentance were documented for future
- 7:44Speaker 2: generations to read. I am banned from entering the temple
- 7:48Speaker 2: because of the angered priests, Jeremiah said. You must go
- 7:52Speaker 2: and take this scroll to the people, read it to them,
- 7:55Speaker 2: and pray they turn to God. So Baruch took the
- 7:59Speaker 2: scroll into the temple. Before God and man, he declared
- 8:03Speaker 2: the warnings of Jeremiah. Revival began to blossom even more
- 8:07Speaker 2: as the people listened. A fast was declared for the people,
- 8:11Speaker 2: and the priests began to soften towards the warnings of God.
- 8:16Speaker 2: The word of God began to heal the broken hearts
- 8:18Speaker 2: of Judah. People were beginning to run back to God.
- 8:21Speaker 2: They were hearing the voice of their shepherd as they
- 8:23Speaker 2: once did in the wilderness. However, King Jehoiakim was not
- 8:28Speaker 2: like King Josiah. He was a prideful man. He was
- 8:31Speaker 2: calm and filled with quiet rage. Word came to him
- 8:35Speaker 2: that Baruch was reading the word of God and people
- 8:38Speaker 2: were filling the temple with repentant hearts. His servants went
- 8:41Speaker 2: to retrieve the scroll written by Baruch and Jeremiah. The
- 8:45Speaker 2: servant brought the scroll back to the king. He was
- 8:48Speaker 2: brooding over the fire, watching the coals pop in the fireplace.
- 8:52Speaker 2: Read it to me, the king said impassively. So the
- 8:56Speaker 2: servant began to read Jeremiah's words. They spoke of coming destruction,
- 9:01Speaker 2: past sins, and opportunities for love. The words vexed Jehoiakim.
- 9:06Speaker 2: He gestured for the servant to hand him the scroll.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Each page after it was read was tossed into the fire.
- 9:13Speaker 2: One by one, the word of God was burnt. Little
- 9:17Speaker 2: did Jehoiakim know the word of God is eternal and unwavering.
- 9:21Speaker 2: There is no stopping truth. Disaster would befall Jehoiakim. Disaster
- 9:27Speaker 2: unlike anything he could imagine. Jeremiah and Baruch created another
- 9:32Speaker 2: copy of the scroll. It was passed around to the
- 9:34Speaker 2: people and read in the temple. However, the anger of
- 9:37Speaker 2: the king was felt, and people were more reluctant to
- 9:40Speaker 2: receive God's warnings. The blossoming evil retreated for a moment
- 9:45Speaker 2: back into its bud. For now, the people remained distant
- 9:49Speaker 2: from their first love.
- 9:54Speaker 3: As we open God's Word today, Israel's righteous king, Josiah,
- 9:58Speaker 3: has died. God had promised him that the demise of Judah,
- 10:03Speaker 3: their punishment for years of disobedience, would not come about
- 10:07Speaker 3: in his lifetime. But now with the king gone, the
- 10:10Speaker 3: prophet Jeremiah knew that judgment was sure and that time
- 10:14Speaker 3: was short. There was such an urgency to the calling
- 10:18Speaker 3: of this man. God's hand of judgment would not be
- 10:21Speaker 3: stayed forever, and Babylon was growing stronger from the north.
- 10:25Speaker 3: And though punishment would come, God desired to see those
- 10:28Speaker 3: in Judah turn from their ways to worship him once again.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Jeremiah understood the importance of his task, but those to
- 10:37Speaker 3: whom he proclaimed God's word were unmoved. Worse yet, they
- 10:41Speaker 3: were bothered by the mere mention of judgment or calamity
- 10:44Speaker 3: that would come upon Judah. Some of Jeremiah's staunchest opponents
- 10:49Speaker 3: were the priests. Men who were to guide God's people
- 10:52Speaker 3: and instruct them in his ways were content to let
- 10:55Speaker 3: the people do as they wished, telling them only what
- 10:58Speaker 3: they wanted to hear. When those who are supposedly ministers
- 11:02Speaker 3: of God refuse to speak truth, disobedience, disorder, and disaster
- 11:07Speaker 3: are not far behind. This is also true in our
- 11:10Speaker 3: own generation. When ministers of the gospel, Our ministers of
- 11:15Speaker 3: the church do not speak God's truth. Disaster is sure
- 11:20Speaker 3: to follow. The priests were so threatened, their egos so
- 11:24Speaker 3: damaged by Jeremiah, that they wanted him killed and brought
- 11:28Speaker 3: him before the officials, calling for his death. Jeremiah's experience
- 11:32Speaker 3: foreshadowed what God's own son, Jesus, would one day experience.
- 11:37Speaker 3: When he, the way, the truth, and the life came,
- 11:40Speaker 3: they put him on a cross and took his life.
- 11:43Speaker 3: The religious establishment always resists the true work of God.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Facing a martyr's fate, Jeremiah spoke to defend himself. He
- 11:54Speaker 3: hoped some of the people would hear the truth and
- 11:56Speaker 3: turn to God. So in Jeremiah 26, verses 12 through 14,
- 12:01Speaker 3: here is what we read. Then Jeremiah spoke to all
- 12:05Speaker 3: the officials and all the people, saying, The Lord sent
- 12:08Speaker 3: me to prophesy against this house and this city all
- 12:11Speaker 3: the words you have heard. Now, therefore, mend your ways
- 12:14Speaker 3: and your deeds and obey the voice of the Lord
- 12:17Speaker 3: your God, and the Lord will relent of the disaster
- 12:20Speaker 3: that he has pronounced against you. But as for me, behold,
- 12:24Speaker 3: I am in your hands. Do with me as seems
- 12:27Speaker 3: good and right to you. Here was a bold, brave,
- 12:31Speaker 3: courageous man, committed and convicted always to obey God, even
- 12:36Speaker 3: if it meant death. With these courageous words, The officials
- 12:41Speaker 3: were convinced that Jeremiah did not actually deserve to die,
- 12:45Speaker 3: that he truly was speaking for God, and slowly hearts
- 12:49Speaker 3: began to warm to the words that Jeremiah the prophet spoke.
- 12:53Speaker 3: These were just small steps and just the beginning, but
- 12:57Speaker 3: they were seeds of renewal and revival. Jeremiah knew that
- 13:01Speaker 3: there were many who needed to hear his words, so
- 13:04Speaker 3: he and his scribe Baruch committed to writing the words
- 13:07Speaker 3: God gave him to speak. These words, the very words
- 13:12Speaker 3: of God, were not just for his generation, but for
- 13:16Speaker 3: those to come. The scroll with God's warnings was taken
- 13:20Speaker 3: into the temple by Baruch because Jeremiah was not welcomed there.
- 13:25Speaker 3: As more people heard the warnings, more hearts began to change.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Even the priests, the religious establishment who had opposed Jeremiah
- 13:34Speaker 3: began to listen. There was hope for the future. But
- 13:39Speaker 3: Judah's king, Jehoiakim was filled with pride. He didn't want
- 13:43Speaker 3: to hear condemnation or of a looming disaster or judgment.
- 13:48Speaker 3: He had the scroll brought to him, and as it
- 13:50Speaker 3: was read, he had his servant burn it in hopes
- 13:53Speaker 3: that God's word would be snuffed out. How absolutely foolish
- 13:58Speaker 3: of this king to think that he could restrain or
- 14:01Speaker 3: stop the word of God. God will always find a
- 14:04Speaker 3: way for his word to penetrate every heart, and sometimes
- 14:09Speaker 3: all he needs is or a few faithful people. Jeremiah
- 14:13Speaker 3: and Baruch recorded another scroll, and it went out to
- 14:16Speaker 3: more people as it was read in the temple. Still,
- 14:19Speaker 3: the king's heart was hard, and the people feared this king,
- 14:23Speaker 3: so Judah continued on a path of destruction. We'll hear
- 14:27Speaker 3: about that in our next episode. Dear Lord, may we
- 14:31Speaker 3: always be faithful, like Jeremiah and Baruch, to deliver your word,
- 14:37Speaker 3: that we would always believe your word, live your word,
- 14:41Speaker 3: and speak your word, because your word is truth. May
- 14:45Speaker 3: we be willing to be courageous and confident that your
- 14:49Speaker 3: word will change lives. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
