Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: From Barely a Half-Mile to 16 Marathons
Transcript
- 0:06Speaker 1: Hey, everybody.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Emily Abadi here.
- 0:18Speaker 3: You are listening to 5-Minute Friday from Hurdle.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Friday before New York City Marathon. Let's go. I am
- 0:28Speaker 2: so excited. Today is a day for me, if you're
- 0:30Speaker 2: listening in real time.
- 0:31Speaker 3: I've got two live shows, one with Helen O'Berry, a
- 0:34Speaker 3: small intimate gathering put together by Shocks. And then this evening,
- 0:38Speaker 3: a live with Nena Lynn.
- 0:41Speaker 2: She's the board chair for New York Roadrunners.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I'm going to be doing that at the Tracksmith X
- 0:47Speaker 3: Brooklyn Circus pop-up in Soho. If you are, again, listening
- 0:52Speaker 3: to this in real time or watching on YouTube, I'm
- 0:54Speaker 3: going to put the link to that event in the
- 0:56Speaker 3: show notes. If you have nothing going on tonight and
- 0:58Speaker 3: want to come hang out. You know what's so interesting?
- 1:02Speaker 3: And I know I've said this here on the show.
- 1:04Speaker 3: I always refer to this week as my Super Bowl.
- 1:06Speaker 3: There's so much going on. It's really exciting. What I
- 1:09Speaker 3: love about the New York City Marathon is that so
- 1:12Speaker 3: many people come together to celebrate this major moment for
- 1:15Speaker 3: the city, which is great. And it's such an entry
- 1:19Speaker 3: point for so many into the world. of running literally
- 1:23Speaker 3: so many, thousands upon thousands of people getting involved in
- 1:28Speaker 3: this major moment. And so many people see that and
- 1:32Speaker 3: they think, maybe I can do this too. I remember
- 1:36Speaker 3: when I was younger, I would come to the city
- 1:38Speaker 3: and watch my cousin run the New York City Marathon.
- 1:41Speaker 3: And it was never something at a young age that
- 1:44Speaker 3: I fathomed could be in my cards. And then fast
- 1:47Speaker 3: forward to now, I'm a 16 time... I'm a 16-time marathoner,
- 1:53Speaker 3: which is just a kind of crazy sentence to say.
- 1:57Speaker 3: But this week, as I said, I often refer to
- 1:59Speaker 3: this as my Super Bowl. And what I realized in
- 2:03Speaker 3: conversation with someone yesterday is that It's not that I
- 2:07Speaker 3: don't get nervous for all of this anymore in terms
- 2:10Speaker 3: of the work responsibilities, trying to make as many people
- 2:13Speaker 3: happy as I can, show up to as many things
- 2:16Speaker 3: as I can, support so many of my friends that
- 2:18Speaker 3: are invested heavily in this space.
- 2:21Speaker 2: I want to do everything.
- 2:22Speaker 3: And I've just come to accept that I know I
- 2:26Speaker 3: am truly doing the best that I can. And so
- 2:29Speaker 3: I'm almost entering this year with a level of excitement and...
- 2:34Speaker 3: calm that I don't typically have. I feel like I
- 2:39Speaker 3: have some really good balance in my life right now.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I feel like I have my priorities straight.
- 2:45Speaker 3: And that wasn't something that happened in.
- 2:49Speaker 2: The blink of an eye, in a snap of a finger.
- 2:51Speaker 3: This is something that I have truly been working on
- 2:54Speaker 3: for years.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And what it comes from is And understanding, yes, that
- 3:00Speaker 2: I'm doing the best that I can.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And then also this really beautiful acknowledgement that I'm good
- 3:05Speaker 3: at owning my no. I'm good at knowing when I
- 3:09Speaker 3: need to shut it down. And sending an email that says,
- 3:13Speaker 3: I wish I could be there, but I just can't
- 3:15Speaker 3: make it. Or shooting a friend a phone call or
- 3:18Speaker 3: a text message on the side and acknowledging maybe that
- 3:21Speaker 3: I don't have the bandwidth for X, but I'd love
- 3:24Speaker 3: to show up for you in some other way. And
- 3:26Speaker 3: right now, I'm just... It feels so cheesy to say,
- 3:30Speaker 3: but I'm really proud of it. I'm really proud of
- 3:33Speaker 3: how invigorated I feel by all of this instead of
- 3:36Speaker 3: feeling burnt out and drained. And I also think that
- 3:40Speaker 3: this goes hand in hand with acknowledging priorities and acknowledging
- 3:44Speaker 3: that I am.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Exactly where I'm supposed to be right now.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I had the opportunity to host a live show at
- 3:51Speaker 3: the Nike House of Innovation in on Fifth Avenue on
- 3:54Speaker 3: Tuesday night with Melissa Jefferson Wooden. That's going to be
- 3:59Speaker 3: in the podcast feed on Tuesday. But To kick off
- 4:03Speaker 3: my favorite week of the year, that whole sentence is
- 4:06Speaker 3: wild to me. It is wild to me because when
- 4:08Speaker 3: I was younger, I thought that I could never be
- 4:11Speaker 3: a runner. I didn't make my volleyball team in high
- 4:13Speaker 3: school because I couldn't run a mile fast enough. When
- 4:16Speaker 3: I got into running as an adult back in college,
- 4:19Speaker 3: I could barely run a mile. I ran a half
- 4:23Speaker 3: mile for an entire summer every single day. And now
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm sitting here telling you that my favorite week of
- 4:31Speaker 3: the year is New York City Marathon Week. I'm sitting
- 4:33Speaker 3: here telling you I'm a 16-time marathoner. I'm sitting here
- 4:36Speaker 3: telling you that a brand like Nike wants me to
- 4:40Speaker 3: help kick off this unbelievable week here in New York City.
- 4:44Speaker 3: How amazing is that? It's truly invigorating for me and
- 4:50Speaker 3: it's exciting. And I feel like it is such a
- 4:53Speaker 3: reminder for me that when you put your head down
- 4:57Speaker 3: and you do the work and you follow truly that
- 5:00Speaker 3: inner knowing, that inner voice, then really good things are
- 5:05Speaker 3: on the table for you. And so as Coach Bennett says,
- 5:09Speaker 3: maybe this is about running, maybe it's not about running
- 5:11Speaker 3: at all, but there are so many possibilities for us.
- 5:13Speaker 3: And if anything, at the bare minimum, this week here
- 5:18Speaker 3: in New York, if you just show up and you
- 5:20Speaker 3: step outside and you watch the marathon, you will be
- 5:22Speaker 3: reminded that you can do hard things and that there
- 5:26Speaker 3: are endless possibilities for you too. I want to know
- 5:30Speaker 3: what hard thing you're thinking about right now. What hard
- 5:32Speaker 3: thing is on your radar? And again, this does not
- 5:39Speaker 3: have to do with running. Oh my God, I'm speaking
- 5:42Speaker 3: so much publicly that in the comfort of my own
- 5:44Speaker 3: home to create content and then put it onto the internet,
- 5:46Speaker 3: I'm not necessarily excelling at this part, but it's okay.
- 5:49Speaker 3: What hard thing is on your radar right now? Tell me,
- 5:51Speaker 3: let me be your biggest cheerleader. And now I am
- 5:58Speaker 3: going to answer a listener question. This comes from Kim.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Kim says, okay, super vulnerable question, but I feel like
- 6:05Speaker 3: you and I are friends. So it's a safe space
- 6:07Speaker 3: with the hurdlers. I'm running the NY marathon for the
- 6:11Speaker 3: first time on Sunday.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 6:13Speaker 3: This has been a dream of mine for so long
- 6:15Speaker 3: and I could not be more excited, nervous. However, I
- 6:18Speaker 3: was not anticipating my struggles with body image during training.
- 6:21Speaker 2: I'm nodding here and understanding.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I haven't run a marathon in 14 years since before
- 6:26Speaker 3: my kids were born. So I'm trying to give myself
- 6:28Speaker 3: as much grace as possible.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
- 6:43Speaker 3: At the beginning of my training, I was incorporating strength training,
- 6:46Speaker 3: but that has fallen off and I've really just been
- 6:48Speaker 3: focused on the running. I look forward to going back
- 6:51Speaker 3: to strength training when this is done.
- 6:52Speaker 2: However, I am just having a hard time.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I would love to know if you have had a
- 6:56Speaker 3: similar experience or any tips that you would tell yourself
- 6:59Speaker 3: when you know you are doing a hard thing, but
- 7:02Speaker 3: just don't feel your best. Thank you so much, Emily.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Appreciate you. Kim, this is relatable content. First off, I
- 7:12Speaker 3: want to acknowledge that this is so valid. And I
- 7:16Speaker 3: think we can all here take a collective deep breath
- 7:20Speaker 3: knowing that It is common experience and you have nothing
- 7:25Speaker 3: to feel guilty or ashamed about. I have certainly been
- 7:30Speaker 3: in this place before. If anything, especially as women, I
- 7:34Speaker 3: can say that in my experience as a woman myself
- 7:39Speaker 3: and then also talking with other women, this is something
- 7:42Speaker 3: that happens so often. It's like men somehow lose a
- 7:45Speaker 3: ton of weight training for a marathon, but women are
- 7:48Speaker 3: just really... going through it. So I can really relate
- 7:54Speaker 3: to this. Here's what's happening from a physiological POV in
- 7:59Speaker 3: your body. Right now, your body is storing glycogen. And
- 8:04Speaker 3: for every single gram of glycogen stored, I think the
- 8:07Speaker 3: statistic is that your body then holds about three to
- 8:11Speaker 3: four grams of water So when you're going from this
- 8:15Speaker 3: place where you're strength training a lot to letting go
- 8:17Speaker 3: of that strength training and focusing on cardio and fueling
- 8:20Speaker 3: for that cardio, naturally, aesthetically for sure. And then also
- 8:24Speaker 3: like physiologically, your body composition is going to change a
- 8:27Speaker 3: little bit. So I want to acknowledge that you are
- 8:30Speaker 3: preparing your body for a hard thing and it is
- 8:33Speaker 3: responding in the way that it should be responding so
- 8:35Speaker 3: that you can show up on Sunday and do your best.
- 8:39Speaker 2: Now, to your point, again, it.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Is so valid that you might not feel your best
- 8:44Speaker 3: necessarily in pursuit of this hard thing.
- 8:48Speaker 2: You said it and I'm going to reiterate it. You
- 8:50Speaker 2: are doing a hard thing.
- 8:52Speaker 3: There is so much to be proud of right now
- 8:53Speaker 3: and you are setting yourself up for a memory that
- 8:57Speaker 3: will last you a lifetime. So I want you to
- 9:00Speaker 3: be proud of yourself. I want you to to write
- 9:04Speaker 3: down all of the things that you have done over
- 9:08Speaker 3: this training journey, all of the ways that you have
- 9:11Speaker 3: showed up for yourself.
- 9:12Speaker 2: You're a mom.
- 9:13Speaker 3: You are doing incredible things. You are taking the time
- 9:17Speaker 3: to show up for you while likely also showing up for,
- 9:20Speaker 3: not likely, it's for certain, you're showing up for your family.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And that is something to be so, so proud of.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Recognize that this is just a season. And Whether or
- 9:32Speaker 3: not the seven pounds come or go when you are done,
- 9:36Speaker 3: it is so much bigger than the number that we
- 9:38Speaker 3: see on the scale. So I know this goes live
- 9:41Speaker 3: the Friday before the marathon. I'm going to say this.
- 9:44Speaker 3: If it's not already put away, put the scale away.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Now is not the time. Now is the time to
- 9:49Speaker 3: focus on how you are fueling your body. Now is
- 9:52Speaker 3: the time to do the best you can with what
- 9:54Speaker 3: you have.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Speak nicely to yourself. All of the positive affirmations.
- 10:00Speaker 3: And know that you have come a long way and
- 10:03Speaker 3: you are so ready for what you're about to do.
- 10:07Speaker 3: But again, let me validate you. It is so understandable
- 10:09Speaker 3: that you feel this way. And I think a lot
- 10:11Speaker 3: of people do. I know that I certainly have when
- 10:14Speaker 3: towing that starting line in Staten Island.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Do the best you can with what you have.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Focus on how strong your legs are, how strong your
- 10:22Speaker 3: soul is, and you are ready for it. My girl,
- 10:26Speaker 3: make sure you're following along with hurdle over on social.
