- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, listen is doug Aldrich with The Dead Daisies
- 0:02Speaker 1: and we have a new live album out, The Dead
- 0:06Speaker 1: Daisies Live Plus five, which was recorded last year at
- 0:10Speaker 1: Stone Dead Festival in the UK. The album features David
- 0:15Speaker 1: Lowe young guitar, Meong guitar, John Corabi on vocals, Michael
- 0:20Speaker 1: Devon on bassin vocals and Tommy Klifftos on drums.
- 0:25Speaker 2: So we're very excited about the record. We want you
- 0:27Speaker 2: guys to check it out.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Very nice, Bunny, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Thank you man.
- 0:34Speaker 3: Pleasure.
- 0:35Speaker 2: So, as you say, the.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Dead Daisy's released the physical copy of the live album
- 0:39Speaker 4: Live plus five.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Dismayed.
- 0:41Speaker 4: As a musician, do you get as excited releasing a
- 0:44Speaker 4: live album with what you do here original albums for
- 0:47Speaker 4: the first time?
- 0:50Speaker 2: It's different.
- 0:50Speaker 1: It's a totally different thing because you know, obviously new music,
- 0:54Speaker 1: when you create new music is it's very exciting because
- 0:59Speaker 1: you've got something that that's no one's ever heard and
- 1:02Speaker 1: there you're going to present it to your fans and
- 1:05Speaker 1: to the you know, the community. And in this situation,
- 1:10Speaker 1: we just had a bunch of we had new material
- 1:14Speaker 1: from two albums from Light Them Up and from trouble,
- 1:18Speaker 1: looking for trouble, sorry, light them up and looking for trouble.
- 1:21Speaker 2: And so we were performing those songs.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Live last year, and the last show of the tour
- 1:29Speaker 1: we just happened to record it and it turned out great.
- 1:32Speaker 2: It's just it's it's very raw and very real.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It's honest, no fixes, no ai, no nothing, It's just
- 1:40Speaker 1: how it was on stage. And I got to say
- 1:42Speaker 1: the audience was incredible, so that was great.
- 1:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you mentioned that you've kept it rough, like with
- 1:51Speaker 4: the raw edges to it, like it's a tempting to
- 1:54Speaker 4: sort of go through in politional up and make it
- 1:56Speaker 4: all perfect. So people out there think that it is
- 1:59Speaker 4: perfec though is it more important to leave it the
- 2:02Speaker 4: way it is?
- 2:02Speaker 3: You think?
- 2:04Speaker 1: I mean, it depends on the on the situation we've
- 2:07Speaker 1: you know, we're basically a real live band. We you know,
- 2:13Speaker 1: some of the coolest moments are when there's little mistakes
- 2:16Speaker 1: or things that happen, or you know, somebody will play
- 2:20Speaker 1: something a little differently. It's like, oh man, I didn't
- 2:23Speaker 1: do that before, you know. So I think you can
- 2:26Speaker 1: always if you start to dabble with it, it it
- 2:31Speaker 1: ends up not you know, I ended up going sometimes
- 2:33Speaker 1: too far with it done that in the past, not
- 2:36Speaker 1: with the Dead Daisies, but with some other things. And
- 2:39Speaker 1: I just think that the beauty of a live show
- 2:41Speaker 1: is is that it's live.
- 2:43Speaker 2: You know, that's the whole point.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Great, I'll tell you a little story though, Like if,
- 2:50Speaker 1: for example, somebody and I did this with with Dio,
- 2:55Speaker 1: somebody handed me a guitar once it was it was
- 2:57Speaker 1: out of tune. I started the song and I had
- 3:01Speaker 1: to go. I couldn't stop, you know, there was nothing
- 3:03Speaker 1: I could do. So when it came time to when
- 3:06Speaker 1: he put the live album out, I just replaced that
- 3:08Speaker 1: guitar with an intune guitar from another another night, you know,
- 3:14Speaker 1: so and it was it was a little better. But yeah,
- 3:18Speaker 1: these things happened. And I remember when I remember before
- 3:23Speaker 1: Van Hanlon died, they did a show on TV in
- 3:29Speaker 1: the United States and Eddie's guitar was he was playing
- 3:34Speaker 1: the wrong key and I don't think I think he
- 3:36Speaker 1: somebody gave him a guitar that was tuned in properly.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And it's kind of cool, you know that that these
- 3:43Speaker 2: people are human. You know, these things happened.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm bin it great fully.
- 3:48Speaker 4: So what are some of the important things as a
- 3:50Speaker 4: band gout you do a live album, like do you do?
- 3:53Speaker 4: You have to sort of find change stuff a little
- 3:55Speaker 4: bit more on stage.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Before he started, you just get out there and belt
- 3:58Speaker 3: it as very usual.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Now, I mean we were going first of all, if
- 4:03Speaker 1: you're going to be in a band with other musicians,
- 4:07Speaker 1: you need when you show up, you need to have
- 4:09Speaker 1: done your homework and put the time in. And so
- 4:12Speaker 1: everybody does that. We put our time in, we do
- 4:14Speaker 1: our homework, we do the best we can. Then we
- 4:17Speaker 1: get together and rehearse for a couple of days and
- 4:20Speaker 1: we get it good. But it never it never really
- 4:24Speaker 1: starts to gel until you're on stage performing live.
- 4:27Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: After three or four shows, it's like, okay, now we
- 4:31Speaker 1: got to set rocking. Now it's good, you know. And
- 4:35Speaker 1: so I think that it's important to put the homework
- 4:38Speaker 1: in at home and show what prepared. But then the
- 4:43Speaker 1: shows are going to work itself out eventually.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Yeah, And as one as like the whole performance from
- 4:49Speaker 4: the Signdag Festival, you've also got five bonus tracks on
- 4:52Speaker 4: name from other shows that you played across Europe in
- 4:55Speaker 4: the US.
- 4:56Speaker 3: What was the selection process for those five bonus one.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It's like you would have a love to choo problem.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, well there was. There's always a lot to choose from.
- 5:04Speaker 1: We you know, we're always changing the set, trying different things,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and I think those were just those were just songs
- 5:12Speaker 1: that were we had good clean versions of.
- 5:16Speaker 2: You know. That's the other thing too. We're not really
- 5:18Speaker 2: we weren't. We weren't planning on.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Making a live record, so it just happened that that
- 5:23Speaker 1: particular show was intact and it was a really great night.
- 5:28Speaker 1: And then we felt like, okay, for for a CD
- 5:31Speaker 1: and a physical product, let's put a few more songs on,
- 5:34Speaker 1: you know. So we just grabbed those and our soundman,
- 5:37Speaker 1: Tommy Dimitrioff, our front of house engineer, and our management
- 5:42Speaker 1: David Edwards picked some songs that that MAT's good with
- 5:47Speaker 1: the whole vibe and and it's a new kind of
- 5:51Speaker 1: a new cross section for the band to play live.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Yeah, there's a couple of interesting comments on there that
- 5:58Speaker 4: I want to talk about a bit more.
- 6:00Speaker 3: The first of.
- 6:01Speaker 4: Which is take a Long Line by Australian band The Angels.
- 6:04Speaker 3: It is now that b what do you that one?
- 6:08Speaker 1: David Lewie loves that song and he you know, he
- 6:11Speaker 1: played with he played with Doc and and did a
- 6:16Speaker 1: little bit of touring with those guys, and it's just
- 6:19Speaker 1: a great song, you know, And so we kind of
- 6:22Speaker 1: just worked up our own take on it, our own
- 6:25Speaker 1: version of it, and it's very cool and it works
- 6:29Speaker 1: good live.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it sounded really good.
- 6:31Speaker 4: Then you've got Hell to Skelter, which has had a
- 6:33Speaker 4: lot of controversy over the years, but it's actually a
- 6:37Speaker 4: damn fine song.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Sure is.
- 6:39Speaker 1: I mean, that's one of the Beatles' heaviest songs. That's
- 6:42Speaker 1: kind of like almost in a sense, that's kind of
- 6:47Speaker 1: one of the first heavy metal songs that I can
- 6:50Speaker 1: think of.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And you know, the Dead Days he's put that song on.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I believe it was on Revolution before I got in
- 6:58Speaker 1: the band, and then we did it. We've done it
- 7:01Speaker 1: live off and on for the past ten years, eleven years, and.
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's just always a great crowd pleaser. People love it.
- 7:08Speaker 1: And John Karrab being from Motley Cruz, he does a
- 7:12Speaker 1: great version of it.
- 7:13Speaker 3: He does.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And the last thing I want to talk about was
- 7:16Speaker 4: Get a Haircut from George Shargood.
- 7:18Speaker 3: What a great song.
- 7:21Speaker 1: It's one of my that was one of my favorite
- 7:23Speaker 1: moments from that show in that tour was we were
- 7:27Speaker 1: featuring David Lowe on lead vocals, just for just to
- 7:30Speaker 1: change it up.
- 7:31Speaker 2: You know.
- 7:32Speaker 1: David's got a really cool voice actually, and he delivered
- 7:35Speaker 1: that song great. It's a song that he had done
- 7:38Speaker 1: that is. I believe he did it as his father's
- 7:41Speaker 1: birthday party at one point, just for fun. And we
- 7:46Speaker 1: tried it a few years ago. We were doing meet
- 7:50Speaker 1: and greet concerts, like a pre concert to the show,
- 7:54Speaker 1: and we tried that song. It was really cool, you know,
- 7:57Speaker 1: so like this last two were I don't know who
- 8:02Speaker 1: who came up with it, but we decided let's try it,
- 8:05Speaker 1: let's put it in the set, you know, and and
- 8:07Speaker 1: see what happens. And it's just a fun It's just
- 8:10Speaker 1: a fun tune. And I'm surprised at how many people
- 8:14Speaker 1: know that song. I didn't know that song. I loved
- 8:16Speaker 1: George Throro good, but I didn't know that song.
- 8:18Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a pearla.
- 8:21Speaker 4: You notice those strangers to doing covers or you've got
- 8:23Speaker 4: a few covers on the live album. The last album
- 8:25Speaker 4: you did was your take on some great blues songs.
- 8:30Speaker 4: When you're taking someone else's song and making it your own,
- 8:32Speaker 4: because I haven't heard you guys mess one song up
- 8:35Speaker 4: that you've covered.
- 8:36Speaker 3: You've done a great job on all. How hard is
- 8:39Speaker 3: the process of making it your own?
- 8:40Speaker 4: Like is it a charl And era thing or do
- 8:42Speaker 4: you just build it out once and you've got it?
- 8:45Speaker 2: Or yeah?
- 8:46Speaker 1: I mean we picked songs for that blues album. We
- 8:50Speaker 1: picked songs that we liked, and we thought, let's just
- 8:53Speaker 1: try and change it up a little bit, you know.
- 8:55Speaker 1: We like, for an example, cross Roads. The song cross Road,
- 9:00Speaker 1: we approached it more in a way, like you know,
- 9:05Speaker 1: a rock and blues band would do it, as opposed
- 9:07Speaker 1: to the original version. I believe, you know, I guess
- 9:12Speaker 1: it's a Robert Johnson. I'm not even sure. No, Robert
- 9:16Speaker 1: Johnson didn't write it. I forget who wrote it, but
- 9:19Speaker 1: Robert Johnson's version is very famous, and then Robert Johnson's
- 9:23Speaker 1: version turned into Cream.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Had their very famous version.
- 9:26Speaker 1: We just wanted to rock it up a bit, so
- 9:28Speaker 1: we I came up with a slide part that was
- 9:31Speaker 1: kind of cool, and it's a blues progression. It's a
- 9:34Speaker 1: one four five basic twelve bar blues progression, so you
- 9:38Speaker 1: you basically just play a twelve bar blues, but using
- 9:41Speaker 1: the slide and in that tempo, and that's what we.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Did for other songs like the Thrill Is Gone.
- 9:50Speaker 1: The Thrill Is Gone is basically in a slow tempo
- 9:54Speaker 1: in this temple like right here, and we put it
- 9:56Speaker 1: into a one two three two two three or one
- 9:59Speaker 1: two three four five six one to four five six.
- 10:02Speaker 2: We put it into that kind of a tempo.
- 10:05Speaker 1: So it's just a matter of experimenting and trying some
- 10:07Speaker 1: things and then it's like, oh, that's cool. Or another
- 10:11Speaker 1: one that we really did a big number one number
- 10:14Speaker 1: on was Black Betty.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It's great. Yeah, we just I had an open tuning.
- 10:21Speaker 1: I was I was trying to play something that was
- 10:24Speaker 1: really old school blues, and then it kind of turned
- 10:29Speaker 1: into a little bit more of a of a rock riff.
- 10:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 10:33Speaker 1: It's very bluesy, but kind of as easy top ish
- 10:36Speaker 1: in a sense or where or Stevie Wonder kind of
- 10:39Speaker 1: a little bit of a funny, funky little groove to it.
- 10:43Speaker 1: So we it's and then there's songs that we did
- 10:46Speaker 1: like Fortunate Son. We did one take in the studio
- 10:50Speaker 1: just straight ahead rock and roll, you know.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Very cola from what I can work out dead daysies
- 10:57Speaker 4: have a Chortistris October two thousand and fifth. Dane might say, Joey,
- 11:01Speaker 4: you guys going to be planning to come visitors sane.
- 11:04Speaker 1: And man, we're due, We are so due to come
- 11:07Speaker 1: visit you guys, and we really of course. You know,
- 11:11Speaker 1: we've all been there in various at various times, some
- 11:14Speaker 1: of us more than others. I've only been to Australia once,
- 11:17Speaker 1: back in in the mid two thousands, I guess, two
- 11:21Speaker 1: thousand and eight, something like that. I went and I
- 11:24Speaker 1: loved that. I got a chance to do a bunch
- 11:26Speaker 1: of stuff. I don't know if it was Brisbane, whether
- 11:30Speaker 1: the Kuala.
- 11:31Speaker 3: Farm is yeah, Brisbane, Qualit Light Pine Kuala Sanctuary.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, So I went there. I would love to
- 11:38Speaker 1: visit again. I'd love to bring my family there. You know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: now you are kids, it would be great to come
- 11:43Speaker 1: and visit. But you know, Australia is near and dear
- 11:46Speaker 1: to my heart, and of course you know the half
- 11:50Speaker 1: of our team is from Australia, so we need to come.
- 11:55Speaker 4: You need to come right Ever, before I let you go, dog,
- 11:57Speaker 4: I've got a new segment.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I've started cold Fight.
- 12:00Speaker 4: I say, basically, I've gone through your social media and
- 12:02Speaker 4: I found a couple of fighters that I want to
- 12:04Speaker 4: know a little bit more about.
- 12:07Speaker 2: Okay, damn, yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 3: This one here, like I'm not bad over there, but
- 12:13Speaker 3: in Australia. That kid's too young to be doing tat days.
- 12:18Speaker 1: That is that is my son, and I think he was.
- 12:23Speaker 1: He was putting some wings on my arm or something
- 12:27Speaker 1: before a show, and it's pretty cool. I'm gonna take
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a snap of that.
- 12:38Speaker 2: That's pretty cool. Yeah, that's my son Rider very intently.
- 12:45Speaker 2: He's now sixteen, he's fully grown.
- 12:48Speaker 1: He's he's taller than me and stronger than me, and
- 12:50Speaker 1: he's he's just got his license and he's an amazing
- 12:54Speaker 1: football player soccer.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Okay, right, So didn't go out to be a title no, thankfully,
- 13:03Speaker 4: thankfully No. The Chaka family like, where is this place?
- 13:09Speaker 4: It looks beautiful? Did you actually play that?
- 13:13Speaker 2: Oh? That is No, I didn't play there.
- 13:15Speaker 1: I just went on a There was a trade show
- 13:19Speaker 1: in China last year and there there was.
- 13:23Speaker 2: You know, when I get a.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Chance to travel around and stuff a bit, I rarely
- 13:28Speaker 1: do a lot of sight seeing because I kind of
- 13:30Speaker 1: feel guilty that I'm not there with my family.
- 13:32Speaker 2: And but my buddy that had brought me over said, hey,
- 13:36Speaker 2: we're going to this place. It's a really beautiful.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Area with famous Chinese buildings and famous Chinese harbor, and
- 13:46Speaker 1: there's a stone boat made out of stone, you know,
- 13:49Speaker 1: so to speak.
- 13:50Speaker 2: So that's the stone boat, you know.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And it was, you know, like I said, I feel
- 13:56Speaker 1: guilty without having my family with me to go to
- 13:59Speaker 1: these e addic places. But my buddy Johnny brought me.
- 14:03Speaker 1: He said, we're going. And the other thing Johnny did
- 14:05Speaker 1: he made me go to the zoo. He goes, hey,
- 14:08Speaker 1: we got a day off tomorrow, let's go to the zoo.
- 14:10Speaker 1: I'm like, he's gotta be kidding. And then I was
- 14:13Speaker 1: practicing guitar in my room on the day off and
- 14:15Speaker 1: he rings me up and he goes, Doug, we're here.
- 14:18Speaker 1: We got the family, I got the family together, We're
- 14:21Speaker 1: going to this I'm like, what you're serious. And it
- 14:23Speaker 1: was a great zoo in Guangzhou. Uh that was you know,
- 14:31Speaker 1: amazing tigers and elephants and monkeys and I mean the
- 14:34Speaker 1: real deal like it was. It was so cool. So yeah,
- 14:39Speaker 1: that's uh, that was from my Chinese trip.
- 14:41Speaker 4: All right, dog, Well thanks very much for you to
- 14:43Speaker 4: write the album Live plus five.
- 14:45Speaker 3: The physical version of it is out in May.

- 14:50Speaker 4: made and I can't get it off of you guys,
