- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. We are so happy
- 0:03that you guys had tuned in this week. This is
- 0:05our final episode for our love month. And I did
- 0:09check there is four weeks in February versus
- 0:12five like January. And so we are recording these
- 0:15episodes earlier. And so we're trying to get
- 0:17ahead of the game. And we have created a workbook
- 0:20series that is on our website fosteringfaithmedia
- 0:24.com. And so you guys can head over there and
- 0:26check out the links should be in our bio and
- 0:29we hope that those can be printed out and passed
- 0:32around and you guys can be listening these to
- 0:35small groups and maybe in your women's ministry,
- 0:37men's ministry, whatever. And so that way you
- 0:40guys can just walk through these together and
- 0:42share and be vulnerable and have community because
- 0:45we are better together. And so I hope these messages
- 0:48are flowing and that these series are blessing
- 0:51you and just keeping you motivated and inspired
- 0:53to be more like Christ. And so in this episode,
- 0:56we are gonna be talking about guarding. Our heart
- 0:59God's way and so guarding our heart is one of
- 1:01the most important spiritual disciplines You
- 1:03will ever learn because your heart is the place
- 1:06where everything flows from Proverbs 4 23 says
- 1:09above all else guard your heart for everything
- 1:12you do flows from it Nothing not some things
- 1:16but everything your thoughts your decisions your
- 1:20relationships your emotional patterns your boundaries
- 1:24Your purpose your calling your choices They all
- 1:28flow out of the condition of your heart. And
- 1:30your heart is a wellspring of your life. And
- 1:35whatever is shaping your heart is shaping your
- 1:38future. But most of us, we're never taught how
- 1:42to guard our heart. We either did too much or
- 1:45too little. Some of us build walls. instead of
- 1:50boundaries and you guys are gonna hear my dog
- 1:52spark and so we apologize but we live life here
- 1:55and people come and go and our dog it may be
- 1:58a little crazy and that's fine his name is Izzy
- 2:00he's old and so he's trying to protect his mama
- 2:04and some of us have built boundaries and some
- 2:07of us have trusted too quickly and handed our
- 2:09hearts to the wrong people some of us trusted
- 2:11no one at all and lived in isolation some of
- 2:14us spilled our hearts into friendships that weren't
- 2:18safe. Some of us let bitterness guard our heart
- 2:21instead of the Holy Spirit. We didn't know the
- 2:24difference between guarding and hiding. We didn't
- 2:27know the difference between wise boundaries and
- 2:30emotional shutdown. And we definitely didn't
- 2:33know how to protect our heart without losing
- 2:35our tenderness. And so let's start there. Guarding
- 2:40our heart doesn't mean closing our heart. Guarding
- 2:44your heart means protecting what God is doing
- 2:46inside of you so nothing destroys it. Guarding
- 2:50your heart is not being suspicious of everyone.
- 2:53It's being surrendered to God. Guarding your
- 2:55heart is not paranoia. It's stewardship. Think
- 3:00of your heart like a garden. A garden protected
- 3:02doesn't mean nothing grows. It means only what
- 3:06is planted intentionally survives. Guard your
- 3:09heart like a garden, not a prison. When Solomon
- 3:13wrote Proverbs 4, he wasn't talking about guarding
- 3:17your heart from love and relationships. He wasn't
- 3:19saying that. Be cold, never trust, stay distant,
- 3:23don't let anyone in. He didn't say that. He was
- 3:27saying be careful. What shapes your inner world?
- 3:30Because whatever gets into your heart eventually
- 3:32flows into your decisions. If fear gets in, fear
- 3:36will flow out. If bitterness gets in, Bitterness
- 3:39will flow out. If insecurity gets in, insecurity
- 3:43will flow out. If truth gets in, then truth will
- 3:47flow out. If God words gets in, wisdom will flow
- 3:51out. If the Holy Spirit gets in, peace will flow
- 3:54out. Your heart is too valuable to leave unprotected.
- 3:59Think about this. If someone steals a car, an
- 4:02alarm goes off. If someone tries to break into
- 4:05your house, the security system gets triggered.
- 4:08But if someone tries to break your heart, most
- 4:11of us don't even notice. We allow access without
- 4:16evaluating motives. We let people speak into
- 4:19our identity without testing their fruit. We
- 4:22take criticism from people who don't carry your
- 4:26calling. We take advice from people not submitted
- 4:28to God. We trust voices that are loud instead
- 4:32of voices that are wise. And then we wonder why
- 4:37Our heart feels bruised, overwhelmed, confused,
- 4:43or exhausted. Guarding our heart requires discernment,
- 4:47and discernment is not suspicion. Discernment
- 4:51is spiritual wisdom, and discernment says, God,
- 4:54show me who is meant to be close, and who is
- 4:57meant to stay outside the gate. Jesus loved everyone,
- 5:01but he didn't give everyone access, the same
- 5:04access. He had a crowd. He had the 70, he had
- 5:09the 12, and then he had the three. Different
- 5:12access for different people and he never apologized
- 5:16for that. And so we often tell our high school
- 5:19small groups is that we have level 10 friends
- 5:21and we have level one friends. And so you pick
- 5:24the level and which people and what you're gonna
- 5:26say. And so whenever you're sharing, if you want
- 5:28everyone in here to be a level 10 friend, then
- 5:30let it flow. And if you are at a level one, that's
- 5:34fine. And so pick the level that you guys are
- 5:38at. And so one of the ways the enemy tries to
- 5:41destroy your heart is by blurring those access
- 5:43lines. He makes you feel guilty for setting boundaries.
- 5:47He makes you think that you're unloving for saying
- 5:50no. He makes you think that you're selfish for
- 5:53protecting your peace. But hear me clearly, guarding
- 5:57your heart is not selfish. It is biblical. If
- 6:01the enemy can't break your faith, he'll try to
- 6:03break your focus. He does it through people,
- 6:07situations, distractions, drama, emotional clutter.
- 6:13And so let's talk about relationships for the
- 6:15moment because February is our relationship month
- 6:17and we're ending it on a strong note. Some of
- 6:19the biggest wounds in your heart didn't come
- 6:22from random people. They came from people you
- 6:25trusted, people you helped, people that you love
- 6:28deeply. And so now You guard your heart by shutting
- 6:32it down instead of guarding it through wisdom.
- 6:35You build walls when God wants you to build gates.
- 6:40Walls keep everyone out. Gates let the right
- 6:45people in and keep the wrong people out. Walls
- 6:49isolate. Gate filters. Walls protect through
- 6:53fear. And gates protect through discernment.
- 6:57And so let's get practical. Guarding your heart
- 7:00means guarding your inputs. What do you watch?
- 7:04What do you listen to? Who gets emotional access?
- 7:10What you meditate on? What you repeat to yourself?
- 7:15The environments that you tolerate? The conversations
- 7:19you feed? The drama that you participate in?
- 7:23Your daily inputs shape your heart more than
- 7:26you realize. And if your heart is troubled, check
- 7:31your inputs. If your heart is anxious, check
- 7:35your inputs. If your heart is bitter, check your
- 7:38input. If your heart is insecure, check your
- 7:43input. Your heart can't thrive in an intoxic
- 7:48environment. Maybe you've noticed this. Some
- 7:51people drain your heart. They don't challenge
- 7:53you. They don't uplift you. They don't speak
- 7:55truth. They don't sharpen you. They don't push
- 7:58you closer to Christ. They bring chaos, confusion,
- 8:01drama, negativity. Guarding your heart doesn't
- 8:04mean you stop loving them. That means you stop
- 8:07giving them influence. And let's be real. Some
- 8:12of those thoughts that you've been entertaining
- 8:14are not from God. The enemy plants suggestions,
- 8:18hoping you're going to water them. He whispers
- 8:23the lies, hoping you meditate on them. He brings
- 8:26up your past mistakes, hoping that you'll define
- 8:30yourself by them. And we talked about that in
- 8:32the last episode. We are so hard on ourselves.
- 8:36If God has forgiven you, forgive yourself and
- 8:38move on. That's why Paul says in 2 Corinthians
- 8:4110 -5, take every thought captive. Not entertain
- 8:47it. Not analyze it. Not rehearse it. Take it
- 8:52captive. Guarding your heart begins in your own
- 8:59thought life. You cannot protect. You cannot
- 9:02have a protected heart and an unprotected mind.
- 9:05And one more thing. Guarding your heart means
- 9:07guarding your identity. You cannot let people
- 9:10label you. I tell this to my patients all the
- 9:12time. They come in and say, I have this, I am
- 9:14this, I am this, I am this, I am this. No. The
- 9:17only label that you get to wear is a child of
- 9:19God. That is the only label that you get to wear.
- 9:22You cannot let your past seasons define you.
- 9:25You cannot let your insecurities name you. You
- 9:28cannot let failure discourage you. You cannot
- 9:31let shame attach yourself to yourself. The enemy
- 9:36attacks - Identity because your identity determines
- 9:39your destiny if he can't change God's call on
- 9:42your life, but she can't He'll try to convince
- 9:45you that you're not worthy of it guard your heart
- 9:48for from your identity attacks by anchoring yourself
- 9:51to God's Word and Repeat you are chosen and not
- 9:55rejected loved and not forgotten forgiven not
- 10:01condemned and called and not overlooked protected
- 10:06not abandon And we brought this up on in the
- 10:09podcast before please know the enemy knows Scripture
- 10:14and if you don't know it better than he does
- 10:16He will twist it and make you believe that it's
- 10:19true if he has the audacity to go after Jesus
- 10:24with Scripture Do you not think that you are
- 10:27a little snack to him if you do not know what
- 10:31scripture says? Somebody can take it out of context
- 10:34and try to spin it and beat you over the head
- 10:35with it. And that's what's wrong with Christianity
- 10:38and people that take context into the wrong places
- 10:43where they don't need to go and they take the
- 10:44Bible that is meant for healing and they beat
- 10:47people with it. And so make sure that you are
- 10:49rooted in Scripture. Make sure that you are spending
- 10:52time in the Word. Podcasts and sermons and church
- 10:55are supplementary. They are not meant to... Take
- 10:59your time over with God that is you and him that
- 11:01is a relationship between you and God Spending
- 11:04time with him being in his word being in prayer
- 11:06being in worship Podcast and sermons on YouTube
- 11:10and going to church. Those are supplemental Those
- 11:14are not meant to be your whole dinner. You can't
- 11:17live on supplements You can't. And please know,
- 11:20I like supplements, but I still have to eat.
- 11:22I still have to eat the main sources of protein.
- 11:24I still have to eat the nutrition that I need.
- 11:27And so supplements are important, but they are
- 11:29supplements. They are not the main course. He
- 11:31is your main course. He set your table. And so
- 11:35just making sure that you are getting your wisdom
- 11:37and your knowledge from the direct guy. Like
- 11:42he's your father. Spend time with him. Okay,
- 11:45that was my rant for the moment. Okay, and then
- 11:49so we're guarding our heart. You cannot have
- 11:52a protected heart and an unprotected mind. And
- 11:55the one more thing is guard your heart means
- 11:57guarding your identity, which we just talked
- 11:59about. And so you are a child of God. You are
- 12:02a son or daughter of the Most High. That's it.
- 12:05Bottom line. If you've given your life to Christ,
- 12:08this is only for those that have given their
- 12:11lives to Jesus, that you believe that God sent
- 12:14his son to die for you on a cross and that he
- 12:16rose on the third day to pay for our sins. This
- 12:20is only for you. That's who this podcast is for.
- 12:24And for those that you don't know Jesus, stick
- 12:26around. We'll introduce you to the guy. He is
- 12:29fantastic and he's just so wonderful. And he
- 12:32is just wonderful. I just love him. And as we
- 12:36come to the end of this message, I want to give
- 12:37you a picture. So imagine Your heart is a house.
- 12:41Who has the key? If you had a billion dollar
- 12:44house, would you give a stranger the keys? Would
- 12:48you give a random person your keys? Who has the
- 12:52keys? Who has access to the rooms? Who would
- 12:56you give the alarm code to? Who can walk in and
- 13:00rearrange things? Would you just invite someone
- 13:03that you randomly meet into your gated community
- 13:06and say, hey, come on, here's the keys, here's
- 13:08the access code, here's this, here's that, I'm
- 13:10gonna be gone on vacation this day. Would you
- 13:12give them all that access? Could someone just
- 13:16randomly walk into your house and just rearrange
- 13:18your whole furniture, paint your walls, and do
- 13:20all the things? Who can influence you how you
- 13:24feel, who you let in, how you think, how you
- 13:27respond? Who gets to decorate your walls of your
- 13:29mind? And who gets to speak into your identity?
- 13:34Some of us, some of you, have handed out the
- 13:37keys to the people who should not have even been
- 13:40in your driveway. Let them know your address.
- 13:44Guarding your heart means taking back the keys
- 13:47God never told you to give away. This is such
- 13:51an important part, your heart. Guard it. More
- 13:56than you guard your house, more than you drive
- 13:57your car, and we have insurance. Just in case,
- 14:01like, just guard your heart. And so the action
- 14:05step this week is simple. Identify one area of
- 14:09your heart that needs guarding. Your thoughts,
- 14:12your emotions, your boundaries, or your influences.
- 14:17Ask God to show you one change to make this week.
- 14:21But then, actually, Make it. Be a doer of the
- 14:25word and not just a hearer of the word. We hope
- 14:28this message inspired you, encouraged you to
- 14:31take a deeper look at what's going on inside
- 14:33your heart. We would love to pray for you this
- 14:35week. Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for the listeners
- 14:38right now. We pray for... them to be strengthened
- 14:41and have wisdom over every heart that's listening.
- 14:44Help them discern who is belonging in their life
- 14:47and who does not. Help them set holy boundaries.
- 14:49Help them protect their identity. Guard their
- 14:52peace. Reveal every unhealthy access point. Show
- 14:55them how to build gates and not walls. Surround
- 14:57them with the right people and remove every distraction
- 15:00sent by the enemy. Anchor their heart in your
- 15:03word. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen and amen
- 15:06We hope this message encouraged you that inspires
- 15:09you send it to a friend share it with a friend
- 15:11Share it with your small groups and make sure
- 15:12that you go check out the workbooks on our fostering

- 15:18show notes. We hope you guys have an amazing
- 15:20week and stay tuned for next month Talk to you
