- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz, where.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest sports
- 0:09Speaker 2: stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 3: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 3: I'm Andrew Perloff. He's Paul Pax. Day four. We had
- 0:22Speaker 3: a huge college football show planned today. You have the
- 0:26Speaker 3: Arkansas Pine Bluff depth chart ready to go?
- 0:28Speaker 4: Oh, ready to chop it up. At directional schools, hyphenated schools,
- 0:31Speaker 4: I was all in.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Yeah, and then the NBA said, not so fast. We
- 0:34Speaker 5: got a bomb to drop. Of course, if you watch
- 0:36Speaker 5: the Dan Patrick Show, you know what happened. The NBA
- 0:38Speaker 5: took five first-round picks away from the Clippers for salary
- 0:42Speaker 5: caps for a convention. Kawhi Leonard, I thought the Dan
- 0:45Speaker 5: Patrick Show broke it down in a really interesting way.
- 0:48Speaker 5: They had Pablo Torreon, of course, Brian Windhorst. But what
- 0:51Speaker 5: was your reaction, Paul, when you saw the news last night?
- 0:54Speaker 4: Well, this has been a year in the making, and
- 0:55Speaker 4: it felt last year like it was a big story,
- 0:57Speaker 4: and then it just kind of went away for a while,
- 0:59Speaker 4: or it was simmering for a while. Then in August,
- 1:01Speaker 4: there was a story that made it sound like this
- 1:03Speaker 4: has much to do about nothing, and nothing's going to happen.
- 1:06Speaker 4: Pablo Torreon has been chopping this up for a while.
- 1:08Speaker 4: But the NBA punishment, when I saw it yesterday, five
- 1:10Speaker 4: first-round picks, that's not little. $ 30 million, Steve Ballmer is
- 1:15Speaker 4: not allowed to be in the facility, participate, go to games,
- 1:18Speaker 4: which He's always on the sidelines, like Mark Cuban a
- 1:20Speaker 4: generation ago. But this is the hammer. This isn't a
- 1:23Speaker 4: mild hammer. This is the hammer.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, and not so fast, one of the
- 1:26Speaker 5: things we want to do is try and speak as fans.
- 1:29Speaker 5: I thought if you're a Clippers fan, this is a
- 1:31Speaker 5: raw deal. You're losing five first-round picks. How can you
- 1:34Speaker 5: get excited about the future of this team? And they're
- 1:36Speaker 5: expensive tickets. I understand hitting Bomber. He deserves it. But
- 1:40Speaker 5: the fans didn't do anything, and now what do you
- 1:42Speaker 5: do as a Clippers fan?
- 1:43Speaker 4: Yeah, anyone who's a season ticket holder of the Clippers
- 1:45Speaker 4: gets punished. You lose five. Draft picks 29, 30, 31, 32, 33.
- 1:50Speaker 4: You're getting into another generation of Clippers fans. You're punishing
- 1:53Speaker 4: people who weren't born yet. You know, Bomber will get
- 1:55Speaker 4: away over this. Kawhi, he does a quick my bad
- 1:59Speaker 4: and then rolls out of town like he's a bad
- 2:01Speaker 4: pass in a pickup game. But the Clippers, imagine you're
- 2:04Speaker 4: Keaton Wagler, the new Clipper guard. You now have nothing
- 2:07Speaker 4: to help you for the next few years. So they're
- 2:09Speaker 4: the real people getting punished here.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I'm very curious.
- 2:12Speaker 5: Will Ballmer fight back, and can he reduce the penalties over?
- 2:16Speaker 5: You know, if the Clippers play ball and say, okay,
- 2:18Speaker 5: we'll take the penalty, I wonder if the NBA would
- 2:20Speaker 5: go from five first-round picks to three like they've done
- 2:23Speaker 5: in past situations.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Yeah, so if you go back to last September, the
- 2:26Speaker 4: Clippers issued a statement that said, yeah, we didn't do
- 2:28Speaker 4: any of this. This is completely false. Yesterday, they didn't
- 2:31Speaker 4: wiggle at all. They said, We still didn't do this.
- 2:34Speaker 4: Commissioner Silver told us we were going to negotiate, and
- 2:37Speaker 4: we didn't expect this. And they're complete deny mode still.
- 2:40Speaker 4: Here's the one caveat, and we're going to have Chris
- 2:42Speaker 4: Mannix from Sports Illustrated in a second here. But is
- 2:45Speaker 4: there any chance, just to play devil's advocate, is that
- 2:47Speaker 4: this was all done behind Steve Ballmer's back? Like his henchman,
- 2:51Speaker 4: his business guy, his assistant GM said, We're going to
- 2:54Speaker 4: find a way to get Kawhi and shovel this money
- 2:57Speaker 4: to him, and he never knew.
- 2:58Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 2:59Speaker 5: I see the guy in the front row. It looks
- 3:01Speaker 5: like he wants to jump into the game. He doesn't
- 3:03Speaker 5: seem like the kind of owner who just sits back
- 3:05Speaker 5: and lets other people do his dirty work. I have
- 3:08Speaker 5: a sense, and based on Lawrence Frank, I had notes
- 3:10Speaker 5: that Bomber was involved. It doesn't seem like they're going
- 3:12Speaker 5: to be able to fight back in that way. But
- 3:15Speaker 5: then again, if they just say, all right, we did it,
- 3:17Speaker 5: I think the penalty.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Would be worse. They want to keep fighting back. Who knows?
- 3:21Speaker 3: Maybe the NBA will come after them some more.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Yeah, they have a couple months. It's like the SEC.
- 3:24Speaker 4: They're going to go to the courtrooms. But let's bring
- 3:26Speaker 4: in our good buddy, Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated, senior
- 3:29Speaker 4: NBA writer. Mannix, all right, let's get into this. When
- 3:32Speaker 4: you saw this punishment yesterday, what level of surprise or
- 3:36Speaker 4: lack of surprise was there for you?
- 3:39Speaker 6: The severity of it was certainly eye opening.
- 3:42Speaker 7: This is a comparable penalty to what the Minnesota Timberwolves
- 3:45Speaker 7: received back in 2000. And that was a clear case
- 3:49Speaker 7: of cap circumvention. There was an email paper trail. that
- 3:53Speaker 7: had the Timberwolves dead to rights. This penalty tells me
- 3:57Speaker 7: that the NBA believes that they've got the Clippers dead
- 3:59Speaker 7: to rights. But more significantly, I think the fact that
- 4:02Speaker 7: they went after Steve Ballmer spoke volumes here. Nobody I
- 4:06Speaker 7: talked to was really surprised that the NBA came down
- 4:09Speaker 7: hard on the Clippers because they had a lot of evidence.
- 4:12Speaker 6: You saw that 35-page report.
- 4:14Speaker 7: There is a lot of, let's say, smoldering guns out
- 4:17Speaker 7: there That suggests the Clippers did a lot of impropriety
- 4:21Speaker 7: when it came to the salary cap. But Steve Ballmer,
- 4:24Speaker 7: there was a belief in NBA circles that the league
- 4:27Speaker 7: might find a way to go a little bit easy
- 4:28Speaker 7: on him. Maybe give him a fine, a slap on
- 4:31Speaker 7: the wrist. But this is really the ultimate penalty that
- 4:35Speaker 7: you can give a billionaire owner, telling him, that he
- 4:39Speaker 7: can't be around the team telling him he can't watch
- 4:41Speaker 7: games in the arena that he built that he can't
- 4:44Speaker 7: be part of the board of governors means they can't
- 4:46Speaker 7: be part of the nba uh this is something i
- 4:49Speaker 7: think steve ballmer is going to fight the hardest and
- 4:52Speaker 7: it surprised me a little that the nba was willing
- 4:54Speaker 7: to go there.
- 4:55Speaker 5: Chris how powerful is ballmer in the nba amongst all
- 4:58Speaker 5: the owners is he near the top kind of like
- 5:00Speaker 5: jerry jones is in the nfl I wouldn't.
- 5:04Speaker 6: He's the most influential owner, I would say, in the NBA.
- 5:06Speaker 7: You know, Jerry Jones is like the de facto co-commissioner,
- 5:10Speaker 7: it feels like, in the NFL.
- 5:11Speaker 6: I wouldn't go that far with Steve Ballmer.
- 5:13Speaker 7: But Steve Ballmer's ability through his net worth to make
- 5:18Speaker 7: connections for the NBA globally, to be part of their
- 5:22Speaker 7: development in technology. He sits on a lot of committees
- 5:26Speaker 7: within the NBA. He's a loud voice at the Board
- 5:29Speaker 7: of Governors meetings or an influential voice at the Board
- 5:32Speaker 7: of Governors meetings, he is as powerful a figure as
- 5:36Speaker 7: they get in the NBA. And this is Adam Silver saying,
- 5:39Speaker 7: we believe you did enough wrong to boot you out
- 5:42Speaker 7: for a year.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Chris, you chopped up the Clippers' response yesterday, and they're
- 5:45Speaker 4: not backing down at all. Do you believe that the Clippers, Ballmer,
- 5:49Speaker 4: and Commissioner Silver were negotiating in any way some type
- 5:52Speaker 4: of middle ground the past month, and then the NBA said, nope,
- 5:55Speaker 4: we're going to hammer you?
- 5:57Speaker 7: I mean, maybe, but not to the extent that ESPN
- 5:59Speaker 7: acted like it was. I certainly think there have been
- 6:03Speaker 7: conversations where the NBA has shown some of their hand
- 6:09Speaker 7: when it came to what this report revealed. Now, obviously,
- 6:13Speaker 7: they didn't show their entire hand because the Clippers were
- 6:15Speaker 7: as taken off guard as anybody by the results of
- 6:19Speaker 7: this investigation. But I certainly believe that there were some
- 6:22Speaker 7: conversations that went on behind the scenes. But clearly, the
- 6:27Speaker 7: NBA was not willing to let the Clippers skate with
- 6:31Speaker 7: just a slap on the wrist. I mean, one of
- 6:32Speaker 7: the most revealing things in this report, the summary of
- 6:37Speaker 7: the report... is that we're not done. There's still a
- 6:40Speaker 7: lot more. This is Wachtell Lipton saying, hey, we had
- 6:44Speaker 7: to get this out. Adam Silver, the NBA, they were
- 6:46Speaker 7: telling us to wrap this thing up. So here is
- 6:48Speaker 7: what we got so far. But we want to be clear.
- 6:51Speaker 7: We want to put this in writing that there is
- 6:53Speaker 7: more out there. They said we had a witness that
- 6:56Speaker 7: came forward this week, this week, to give us information.
- 7:00Speaker 7: So I just think the NBA was never going to
- 7:02Speaker 7: allow the Clippers to skate with any kind of small,
- 7:06Speaker 7: insignificant penalty.
- 7:07Speaker 6: That's why any talks, Probably didn't go anywhere.
- 7:09Speaker 5: You know, today on SI.com, you wrote, the Clippers are cooked.
- 7:13Speaker 5: If you're a Clippers fan and you're worried about the
- 7:16Speaker 5: future of your team, can they recover from this and
- 7:18Speaker 5: be competitive and stay over the next 10 years?
- 7:21Speaker 7: I like it, Perloff. You're a man of the Clipper
- 7:23Speaker 7: faithful there. You're one of the supporters of.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Big, big Clippers. Look, it is.
- 7:30Speaker 6: It is the basketball equivalent of a death sentence.
- 7:32Speaker 3: It just is.
- 7:34Speaker 7: You know, there's some questions about whether or not, and
- 7:36Speaker 7: I heard you bring this up at the top of
- 7:37Speaker 7: the show, would the NBA restore some of these Clippers
- 7:41Speaker 7: draft picks?
- 7:42Speaker 6: They did it in Minnesota.
- 7:43Speaker 7: But the difference is that the Timberwolves were on their
- 7:45Speaker 7: best behavior throughout that entire process. The Timberwolves didn't really fight. Like,
- 7:49Speaker 7: they were dead to rights. They didn't fight it. They
- 7:51Speaker 7: kind of took their punishment like men. And the NBA
- 7:54Speaker 7: turned around in, what's it, 2003 and said, you got
- 7:57Speaker 7: a couple of these picks today.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Back.
- 7:59Speaker 7: The Clippers are not going quietly into that night. Like
- 8:02Speaker 7: they are determined to fight. It sure sounds like they're
- 8:04Speaker 7: considering legal options. That's not the behavior of an organization
- 8:10Speaker 7: that's likely to get their picks back. So they're not
- 8:13Speaker 7: going to have a first round pick till I believe 2035.
- 8:16Speaker 7: And if you think about it contextually, guys, like the
- 8:20Speaker 7: player they're going to draft in the first round in
- 8:21Speaker 7: 2035 is like 10 years old now.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You think.
- 8:26Speaker 6: Young kid right now.
- 8:27Speaker 7: So it's, look, I think you're talking about late 2030s
- 8:32Speaker 7: before the Clippers have a chance to be really relevant again.
- 8:35Speaker 4: You know, I can tell you that 10-year-old does not
- 8:37Speaker 4: want to go to the Clippers already. Believe me, I
- 8:39Speaker 4: don't know what his name is, but he doesn't want
- 8:40Speaker 4: to be a Clipper. Let me ask you this, Chris.
- 8:42Speaker 4: You did a feature piece on Kawhi Leonard a couple
- 8:44Speaker 4: years ago, cover of SI. You got to know him,
- 8:47Speaker 4: and we don't know him at all. I mean, the
- 8:48Speaker 4: casual fan, even people who work in the sports media
- 8:51Speaker 4: barely know this guy. Were you surprised by... Let me
- 8:55Speaker 4: ask you about his statement on the way out, his
- 8:57Speaker 4: half apology, blaming his underlings. Do you know about his
- 9:00Speaker 4: backstory and the people who work around him?
- 9:02Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, he's had a pretty close inner circle for...
- 9:06Speaker 7: his entire life. It's been his uncle, Dennis Robertson, who's
- 9:10Speaker 7: acted as his de facto agent for most of his
- 9:13Speaker 7: pro career. He's got a good friend, Jeremy Castleberry, who's
- 9:17Speaker 7: been an assistant coach in Toronto and with the LA Clippers.
- 9:20Speaker 7: He's been his kind of right-hand man for a long time,
- 9:24Speaker 7: but it's a very tight inner circle. That statement... All right, Chris.
- 9:29Speaker 7: That statement was awesome. I'm sorry. That statement was awesome.
- 9:32Speaker 7: It was absolutely awesome. Because this was like the Clippers
- 9:35Speaker 7: are out there saying like, we didn't do anything and
- 9:38Speaker 7: we're going to fight this till the end. Kawhi, if
- 9:41Speaker 7: I can paraphrase this statement, is like, guess we did something.
- 9:45Speaker 6: My bad. What up, Toronto?
- 9:47Speaker 4: How you guys doing?
- 9:49Speaker 6: I'm here to party. I'm lucky to get back with you.
- 9:51Speaker 6: Everything else, that doesn't really matter.
- 9:54Speaker 4: They needed Kawhi to load manage that statement and just
- 9:57Speaker 4: hold it off for a few days and take a break.
- 9:59Speaker 3: How did they.
- 10:00Speaker 7: I mean, look, Kawhi owes the Clippers nothing right now.
- 10:03Speaker 7: The Clippers clearly have nothing to do with Kawhi. But
- 10:04Speaker 7: the fact those statements were not more closely coordinated is
- 10:08Speaker 7: a killer for the Clippers. And I'll tell you guys,
- 10:10Speaker 7: this was the NBA being savvy here. Now, I'm sure
- 10:13Speaker 7: the NBA wanted to come down harder on the Clipper
- 10:16Speaker 7: or on Kawhi Leonard. But by giving him this little
- 10:19Speaker 7: slap on the wrist, they take Kawhi out of play.
- 10:22Speaker 6: They take, more importantly, the union and its lawyers.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Out of play. So now.
- 10:27Speaker 7: They have isolated the Clippers here. They have removed arbitration
- 10:30Speaker 7: from the table. They have removed the union from being
- 10:33Speaker 7: a thorn in their side. This was the NBA saying,
- 10:35Speaker 7: you know what? We don't like it, but it's more
- 10:37Speaker 7: important to us to police the team and not the players.
- 10:41Speaker 7: And by giving Kawhi the slap on the wrist, they
- 10:44Speaker 7: strengthened their position when it comes to the Clippers.
- 10:47Speaker 5: All right, Chris, we have some unfinished business on the
- 10:49Speaker 5: basketball court, by the way. I've been coming up to
- 10:51Speaker 5: the man cave every day. And many years ago, you
- 10:53Speaker 5: and I famously lost to Paul and Seton. It was
- 10:58Speaker 5: a Villanova Georgetown level upset. You want to come back down?
- 11:01Speaker 5: I don't know how your game is these days. Mine's
- 11:04Speaker 5: not great, but can we get a rematch? Are you
- 11:06Speaker 5: down for that?
- 11:07Speaker 6: I'm down for that.
- 11:07Speaker 7: I've started to, now that I'm primarily out in California,
- 11:11Speaker 7: I have started to play more outdoors games.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Which is nice.
- 11:15Speaker 6: Start to get some reps.
- 11:16Speaker 7: I've got a kid now, so I like to bring
- 11:18Speaker 7: him to the park, get some shots up myself while
- 11:20Speaker 7: he plays in the grass.
- 11:21Speaker 6: So I'm starting to shake some of the rust off.
- 11:25Speaker 7: But I mean, like, Paulie and like, isn't Fritzy like
- 11:28Speaker 7: 60 with like multiple surgeries?
- 11:31Speaker 6: What's going on with him?
- 11:33Speaker 7: I don't know if I want to beat up on
- 11:34Speaker 7: a senior citizen right now.
- 11:35Speaker 5: But he's got a great hook shot. He's got this
- 11:36Speaker 5: lefty hook shot that you can't lock.
- 11:38Speaker 4: If you're balling in SoCal, the Clippers may sign you, Chris.
- 11:41Speaker 6: I mean, I'd be one of the guys available to
- 11:43Speaker 6: come off the street.
- 11:43Speaker 7: They might have to have open tryouts, like invincible style
- 11:46Speaker 7: tryouts to get guys on that roster. It's not going
- 11:50Speaker 7: to be pretty. And just last thing on them is
- 11:53Speaker 7: one of the big questions I have. is will Steve
- 11:56Speaker 7: Ballmer sell this team? Like he's gone for a year.
- 11:59Speaker 7: He paid $ 2 billion for the team back in what, 2013?
- 12:02Speaker 7: Even as a distressed asset, the Clippers can probably get
- 12:06Speaker 7: 3X on that investment.
- 12:06Speaker 6: He probably gets 6 billion. He owns the building.
- 12:08Speaker 7: He sells that 8 billion. Like there's a lot of
- 12:10Speaker 7: money to be made just by selling the Clippers. Steve
- 12:13Speaker 7: Ballmer is 70 years old. Does he want to stick
- 12:17Speaker 7: around and oversee a floundering franchise with a fan base
- 12:22Speaker 7: that is going to blame him for the predicament that
- 12:24Speaker 7: they're in?
- 12:25Speaker 5: All right, Chris, thank you so much for the time.
- 12:27Speaker 5: I'll see you on the court. We'll set it up.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Come on down, buddy.
- 12:30Speaker 6: I'll be there.
- 12:31Speaker 3: All right.
- 12:32Speaker 5: Of course, that's a great Chris Mannix. Oh, man, poor bomber.
- 12:37Speaker 5: I don't know what he's going to do with all
- 12:38Speaker 5: his money if he doesn't own the Clippers.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Yeah, that yacht is going to be lonely.
- 12:41Speaker 5: All right, coming up next, we're going to turn to
- 12:43Speaker 5: the NFL. Is it now or never for Lamar Jackson
- 12:46Speaker 5: in Baltimore? We'll explain next on Not So Fast.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Leave like January it's now like that was our last
- 12:59Speaker 2: pad of practice before we play a game where'd it
- 13:01Speaker 2: go like if yesterday felt like years or last year
- 13:04Speaker 2: felt like centuries ago like it's it's it's on it's
- 13:08Speaker 2: football season how do you not get excited like how
- 13:11Speaker 2: do you not have a little bit how do you
- 13:12Speaker 2: how do you sleep all the way into your alarm
- 13:14Speaker 2: this time you can't right you're waking up like if
- 13:17Speaker 2: you don't like you got to you're waking up because
- 13:20Speaker 2: you're dreaming about it like that's football season so absolutely
- 13:23Speaker 2: not it's there's no monotony in the football season or
- 13:27Speaker 2: getting ready to play.
- 13:27Speaker 4: A football game Back on Not So Fast, Paxton Perloff
- 13:32Speaker 4: here on NBC Sports Now. That's Kenny Dillingham. He's our guy,
- 13:35Speaker 4: not my guy.
- 13:36Speaker 5: By the way, you want a college football czar maybe,
- 13:38Speaker 5: a scheduling czar at least, Kenny Dillingham would be the guy.
- 13:41Speaker 5: Nobody talks about the sport more eloquently than Kenny Dillingham.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I love it.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Culture czar. He's like, I want to hit somebody.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 13:47Speaker 4: He's got the sweatshirt on. It's 98 degrees out there
- 13:49Speaker 4: in the morning.
- 13:50Speaker 5: I can't believe he's still at Arizona State because I
- 13:52Speaker 5: think he could get it.
- 13:53Speaker 3: After this year, watch. He'll get any job he wants.
- 13:55Speaker 4: You know, it was close last year.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:57Speaker 4: There were some people calling. That's Kenny Dillingham getting us
- 13:59Speaker 4: fired up for the college football season. Back on Not
- 14:01Speaker 4: So Fast. What we like to do here is warm takes.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You don't want to burn anybody. Now, I went first
- 14:06Speaker 4: the first couple days. I'm going to yield the floor
- 14:08Speaker 4: to you and your lovely blue shirt.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Yeah, this was actually your outfit on day one.
- 14:15Speaker 4: I called it.
- 14:16Speaker 5: Yeah, but now you kind of look like Jeff Probst,
- 14:18Speaker 5: but we'll get to that later.
- 14:19Speaker 3: All right.
- 14:21Speaker 5: My first warm take today is about Kirk Cousins. Now,
- 14:23Speaker 5: Kirk Cousins named the starter in Las Vegas. I think
- 14:26Speaker 5: everyone's waiting for him to lose a few games and
- 14:29Speaker 5: yield the floor to Fernando Mendoza. I got to tell
- 14:31Speaker 5: you right now, Kirk Cousins is going to be better
- 14:33Speaker 5: than you think. I'm going to call it commitment to
- 14:36Speaker 5: competence in Vegas with the Raiders.
- 14:38Speaker 3: No commitment to excellence, but competence.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Because he's very, very good in Clint Kubiak's offense. They
- 14:43Speaker 5: were together in Minnesota. Every year they were together, Cousins
- 14:46Speaker 5: had a passer rating over 100.
- 14:48Speaker 3: They run this wide zone run game and play action, Paul.
- 14:51Speaker 5: And all quarterbacks are better under play action, especially if
- 14:53Speaker 5: you can sell the run. Cousins knows what he's doing. Listen,
- 14:57Speaker 5: he's like me. He had no athleticism when he was young.
- 14:59Speaker 5: He has none now. It does not matter. He knows
- 15:02Speaker 5: where to go with the ball. He's going to throw
- 15:04Speaker 5: the ball to Brock.
- 15:04Speaker 3: Bowers over the middle.
- 15:05Speaker 5: And Kubiak makes receivers good. It's not the other way around.
- 15:09Speaker 5: The offense will create a good receiver, even though there's
- 15:12Speaker 5: none on the depth chart right now.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Just wait. This passing offense is going to look way
- 15:16Speaker 3: better than we think it is. Will they win a
- 15:17Speaker 3: lot of games? Maybe not.
- 15:19Speaker 5: But I think they are going to have a higher
- 15:21Speaker 5: level than we thought with Kirk Cousins because they've been
- 15:24Speaker 5: bad the last few years. They're going to be very
- 15:26Speaker 5: pleased with just sort of competent quarterback play.
- 15:29Speaker 4: A couple things. You crushed that warm take. That may
- 15:32Speaker 4: go in the warm take Hall of Fame. It had comedy.
- 15:34Speaker 4: It had a little against the grain in it. I
- 15:36Speaker 4: think this is a very interesting take by you because
- 15:38Speaker 4: if Cousins plays well and they win a couple of
- 15:40Speaker 4: those games they're not expected to win and somehow they're
- 15:43Speaker 4: 4-3 at the halfway point, you can't bench them. And
- 15:46Speaker 4: now Mendoza is No fault of his own. It's just
- 15:49Speaker 4: sitting and sitting and sitting. But, you know, there'd be
- 15:50Speaker 4: pressure to not play a guy. You know, I always
- 15:53Speaker 4: said that week eight game against the Jets, that's the
- 15:55Speaker 4: target game. But if somehow you beat the Rams or
- 15:57Speaker 4: beat the Bills or beat them both, you're not sitting anybody.
- 16:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, I think the high end would be
- 16:03Speaker 5: Alex Smith in Kansas City right before Patrick Mahomes got there.
- 16:06Speaker 3: That's possible. If they got 10 wins, that'd be like
- 16:09Speaker 3: winning the Super Bowl.
- 16:09Speaker 4: It's possible from the standpoint of Alex Smith is similar
- 16:12Speaker 4: to Kirk Cousins in good, not great. but I don't
- 16:15Speaker 4: know if the supporting cast with the Raiders will support
- 16:17Speaker 4: Cousins to that level.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Oh, just because they've been terrible for 20 years?
- 16:21Speaker 4: Yeah, because they've been terrible for 20 years. Got me
- 16:23Speaker 4: on that one. All right, let's get to my warm take.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Here we go. I've always thought there should be a
- 16:27Speaker 4: rule in sports, and I'm being a little facetious here,
- 16:29Speaker 4: but that owners should be accountable, not just for infractions,
- 16:32Speaker 4: but for your team losing. You're the steward of this franchise, right?
- 16:35Speaker 4: If you buy a team and they don't win, you
- 16:37Speaker 4: should take the blame for it. We talked about Artie Moreno,
- 16:40Speaker 4: the former owner of the Angels yesterday. And they went
- 16:43Speaker 4: one for 17 in making the playoffs. How about a
- 16:45Speaker 4: hard rule? You buy a team, you're on the clock.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Artie Moreno, you should have been on the clock. If
- 16:50Speaker 4: your team doesn't make the playoffs the postseason for 10
- 16:53Speaker 4: straight seasons, you must sell. And I know they can
- 16:56Speaker 4: enforce this and commissioners won't enforce this, but I would
- 16:58Speaker 4: love to see it in this pie in the sky
- 17:00Speaker 4: thought I have. Because if you don't make the postseason
- 17:02Speaker 4: for 10 years and you spend or you don't spend,
- 17:05Speaker 4: you're gone, man. You didn't do it. If you look
- 17:08Speaker 4: at what's going on with the Clippers, they're not that bad,
- 17:10Speaker 4: but they're in the middle of the road. Their owners
- 17:12Speaker 4: should have been gone years ago for malpractice. This one
- 17:14Speaker 4: is a different case. But if you're an owner of
- 17:15Speaker 4: a team, if you're an owner of the Mets or
- 17:17Speaker 4: whatever team, and you don't spend or you spend, 10 years,
- 17:20Speaker 4: you're on the clock, you're out of there, you must sell.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yeah, every 10 years, every owner goes in front of
- 17:25Speaker 3: the league, and they have to get re-approved.
- 17:27Speaker 4: Yes, like a review.
- 17:28Speaker 3: But even better, what if fans got to do it?
- 17:30Speaker 5: Like, you could sit on the board with 12 Chicago
- 17:33Speaker 5: fans and.
- 17:33Speaker 3: Decide if you're going to keep the guys.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Right, if you're the new owner of the Denver Broncos,
- 17:37Speaker 4: and you're in year 10, and it's the final week
- 17:39Speaker 4: of the season, and You have to walk out of
- 17:42Speaker 4: the building, and you're just a civilian. You're walking to
- 17:44Speaker 4: your car.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that Broncos owner has a lot of money.
- 17:47Speaker 4: Shame, shame, Game of Thrones.
- 17:50Speaker 3: I love it.
- 17:51Speaker 5: Okay, let's stick in the NFL. Lamar Jackson's been in
- 17:55Speaker 5: the news because of his contract. I feel like this
- 17:56Speaker 5: happens every year, Paul, where we're talking about Lamar Jackson's contract.
- 18:00Speaker 3: But it is up pretty soon.
- 18:01Speaker 5: At the end of 2027, he could be gone in Baltimore, theoretically.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Now, you look at the Super Bowl odds. They are 10-1.
- 18:07Speaker 5: They're tied for second with Buffalo as the most likely
- 18:10Speaker 5: team to win it all.
- 18:12Speaker 3: I've got to be honest.
- 18:13Speaker 5: It's now or never for Lamar Jackson because he still
- 18:15Speaker 5: has Derrick Henry, a running back.
- 18:17Speaker 3: He still has Mark Andrews, a tight end.
- 18:18Speaker 5: He's got a new offensive coordinator, Declan Doyle, who everyone's
- 18:21Speaker 5: excited about.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Lamar said we're going to unveil things the league has
- 18:24Speaker 3: never seen. But, you know what? He's got to win
- 18:27Speaker 3: in the postseason.
- 18:28Speaker 5: I think that an MVP-type season could be coming from
- 18:31Speaker 5: Lamar Jackson. But if he doesn't win the playoffs, it's
- 18:33Speaker 5: going to look even worse after that.
- 18:35Speaker 4: So I'm going to bonus warm take you here and
- 18:37Speaker 4: say that the Ravens should not spend any more money
- 18:40Speaker 4: on Lamar Jackson now. They should wait until January, February. Look,
- 18:44Speaker 4: they don't have to spend on him right now, and
- 18:45Speaker 4: they shouldn't. See what happens. You want to give him
- 18:48Speaker 4: some monstrous contract extension and he doesn't do anything this year?
- 18:50Speaker 4: He has a mild year like last year. I know
- 18:53Speaker 4: he's banged up. But assuming health, if he underachieves... Why
- 18:56Speaker 4: would you give him the money now? You don't have
- 18:58Speaker 4: to give him the money now. It's okay if he's disgruntled. What,
- 19:00Speaker 4: is he going to be gruntled if you give him
- 19:02Speaker 4: the money, which is not even a word? But I
- 19:04Speaker 4: don't need to pay him now. I need him to
- 19:06Speaker 4: earn one more big paycheck.
- 19:08Speaker 3: I don't know. The guy's got two MVPs. He's going
- 19:10Speaker 3: to be awesome.
- 19:11Speaker 4: How many playoff wins to MVPs? What's his playoff win
- 19:13Speaker 4: to MVP ratio?
- 19:15Speaker 3: About one to one.
- 19:16Speaker 4: One-to-one. That's not what I want. I want more playoff
- 19:18Speaker 4: wins than MVPs.
- 19:19Speaker 5: You're telling me you're going to give Brock Purdy and
- 19:21Speaker 5: probably eventually CJ Stroud $ 55 million, and you're not going
- 19:24Speaker 5: to give that to Lamar Jackson?
- 19:26Speaker 4: I'm going to make him wait until February for $ 55 million.
- 19:30Speaker 5: I like that you sort of warm-take me back on
- 19:32Speaker 5: my warm-take, but I'm third warm-taking you.
- 19:35Speaker 3: You've got to pay him. Pay him now. Save some money.
- 19:37Speaker 3: Lamar Jackson is not going anywhere, Paul.
- 19:39Speaker 4: Three warm-takes make a right, right?
- 19:42Speaker 3: I hope so.
- 19:42Speaker 4: All right, let's get to the NFC North. Every day
- 19:44Speaker 4: we're going to do a division preview, my NFC North.
- 19:47Speaker 4: You know I love it, but I'm going to you, Pearl.
- 19:49Speaker 4: NFC North prediction.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Here.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I'm going to start with the Bears. The Bears have
- 19:52Speaker 4: a ton of hype, a lot of national TV games.
- 19:55Speaker 4: They kind of got by in a couple wins last year,
- 19:58Speaker 4: more than seven wins in the final quarter. Do you
- 20:00Speaker 4: think that they're going to drop off or are you
- 20:02Speaker 4: going to go warm take and say they'll get better?
- 20:04Speaker 5: I'm going to do a little bit of a drop off. A,
- 20:07Speaker 5: their schedule's hard. B, regression. As Coach Ben Johnson said,
- 20:10Speaker 5: they are the prime target for regression because of all
- 20:13Speaker 5: those close wins and their turnover luck. And turnovers are
- 20:16Speaker 5: a bit luck. Now, I like Caleb Williams. I love
- 20:19Speaker 5: Ben Johnson. Defense, that's my concern, Paul, partly because I
- 20:23Speaker 5: sit next to you and you talk.
- 20:24Speaker 3: About it all day long.
- 20:24Speaker 4: They're not threatening.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know if that's the kind of unit
- 20:27Speaker 3: that's going to win 13 games.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Okay, let's get to the Packers. Let's get to Jordan Love.
- 20:30Speaker 4: We talked about this the other day. Jordan Love, when
- 20:33Speaker 4: optimal conditions, he's throwing dimes. He's got Tucker Kraft back,
- 20:38Speaker 4: Josh Jacobs, we don't know. But best-case scenario for the
- 20:41Speaker 4: Packers is?
- 20:42Speaker 5: Well, I think there's actually pressure. I mentioned Lamar Jackson.
- 20:45Speaker 5: I think Jordan Love's got to win on a high
- 20:46Speaker 5: level maybe.
- 20:47Speaker 4: He already has his contract.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, they were so close. Remember they blew
- 20:51Speaker 5: that playoff game to San Francisco and started to rain?
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:54Speaker 5: You know, Green Bay has made the playoffs. We know
- 20:56Speaker 5: they can do that. Can Jordan Love take them to
- 20:57Speaker 5: the next level? Can he really be the successor to
- 20:59Speaker 5: Favre and Rodgers? I think he's a good enough quarterback
- 21:02Speaker 5: to take a team deep into the playoffs.
- 21:04Speaker 3: I just worry that everybody gets hurt.
- 21:06Speaker 5: Parsons, I don't know if he's going to be full
- 21:07Speaker 5: Micah Parsons when he comes back. If they're healthy, though, Paul,
- 21:11Speaker 5: they have the talent to win it all. I'm not
- 21:14Speaker 5: going to predict them to win it all because they
- 21:15Speaker 5: have no depth, but they have more talent than anyone.
- 21:18Speaker 4: I'm going to skip the Lions because we've done a
- 21:19Speaker 4: lot about the Lions. I'm going to go right to
- 21:20Speaker 4: the Vikings. Are the Vikings an interesting good team or
- 21:23Speaker 4: an interesting Bad team.
- 21:25Speaker 5: To me, they are a very interesting, probably bad team.
- 21:31Speaker 5: They got two good coaches, Kevin O'Connell and Brian Flores.
- 21:35Speaker 5: They don't have the quarterback. Now, I know DP is
- 21:37Speaker 5: kind of optimistic on Kyler Murray.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I'm nervous. Yeah, I'm nervous.
- 21:41Speaker 5: Even if he does play well, he's a health risk.
- 21:44Speaker 5: You know, it's a very timing-oriented offense. Is he going
- 21:46Speaker 5: to be able to run that? I love a lot
- 21:49Speaker 5: of the players. I love the roster. I'm worried about
- 21:51Speaker 5: the quarterback.
- 21:52Speaker 4: All right, that's it. That's our NFC North. We'll get
- 21:53Speaker 4: to these every day on Not So Fast. But coming
- 21:55Speaker 4: up next, NBC Sports College Football Insider, Nicole Auerbach, joins
- 22:00Speaker 4: the show. Gets us ready for five days of college football.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Can't wait. Stick around. Not so fast.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Andrew Perloff, Paul Paps here at NBC Sports Now and Peacock. Now, Paul,
- 22:12Speaker 5: if you're watching college football anywhere on NBC, you're going
- 22:16Speaker 5: to see a lot of Nicole Auerbach. She's the lead
- 22:18Speaker 5: college football analyst, of course. Tonight, the debut of Rushing
- 22:22Speaker 5: the Field with Joshua Perry. We're so excited for that.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Nicole, how you doing?
- 22:27Speaker 8: I am doing great. I am so excited to actually
- 22:30Speaker 8: get football to talk about and not eligibility lawsuits like
- 22:34Speaker 8: we've had all offseason.
- 22:35Speaker 4: Now, your show tonight, is it going to be in
- 22:36Speaker 4: Ann Arbor?
- 22:38Speaker 6: Yes, it is.
- 22:38Speaker 8: We're at Good Time Charlie's, one of the best bars
- 22:41Speaker 8: in Ann Arbor. Many a trivia night I've spent at
- 22:45Speaker 8: this bar.
- 22:46Speaker 4: So you went to Michigan. We did our research on
- 22:48Speaker 4: Not So Fast. We do that. Now, yesterday on the show,
- 22:51Speaker 4: we played the clip of Appalachian State versus Michigan, I
- 22:54Speaker 4: think 07 with the upset of number five Michigan. Were
- 22:57Speaker 4: you at Michigan at the time?
- 22:59Speaker 8: I sure was. That was my very first game of
- 23:02Speaker 8: my freshman year.
- 23:03Speaker 6: No way.
- 23:04Speaker 8: My absolute first college football game. I grew up in
- 23:07Speaker 8: New Jersey, pro sports area, grew up going to Jets
- 23:10Speaker 8: games everywhere. And this was my first college football experience.
- 23:13Speaker 8: I obviously did not know that I would go on to, like,
- 23:15Speaker 8: cover college football.
- 23:16Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:17Speaker 8: But very memorable start.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Did you consider transferring to Ohio State after that game?
- 23:21Speaker 5: No. You probably went for the football, and you're like, oh,
- 23:23Speaker 5: my God, now I'm the mush.
- 23:25Speaker 3: We're not good.
- 23:26Speaker 8: Well, the crazy part is, yes, I mean, I remember
- 23:28Speaker 8: leaving and it was just like this stunned silence and
- 23:30Speaker 8: being like, that is not what was supposed to happen.
- 23:33Speaker 8: But also, so first of all, I was the only
- 23:36Speaker 8: person that went to Michigan for my entire high school
- 23:40Speaker 8: and from my entire friend group. So everyone was texting me.
- 23:43Speaker 8: Everyone was calling me. Everyone was making fun of me
- 23:46Speaker 8: for it. And the worst part was as someone who
- 23:49Speaker 8: is so excited to go to a big state school,
- 23:51Speaker 8: like we had the student season ticket shirts, like t-shirts,
- 23:55Speaker 8: they're really cute. I could never wear it again because
- 23:57Speaker 8: it said Appalachian state, like on the top line of
- 24:00Speaker 8: the back of the shirt. So I could never wear
- 24:01Speaker 8: the t-shirts.
- 24:02Speaker 4: Oh, before we put a bow on that, if you
- 24:04Speaker 4: could find that shirt, we'll put up in studio because
- 24:06Speaker 4: Darren Revell would bid on that shirt. That's a classic.
- 24:08Speaker 4: All right, Nicole, you cover the Big Ten. You're locked
- 24:10Speaker 4: in on the Big Ten. If you look at the
- 24:12Speaker 4: Big Ten right now, Ohio State, Indiana, Oregon, and then
- 24:16Speaker 4: it drops a tier. Is that where you see it?
- 24:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that is.
- 24:19Speaker 8: I've been calling them the big three in the Big Ten.
- 24:21Speaker 8: You know, the rankings reflect that. I actually think Indiana
- 24:25Speaker 8: is a little low. I have them number one in
- 24:27Speaker 8: my ballot for the eight people. But in general, yeah,
- 24:30Speaker 8: those three feel like the true national title contenders, true
- 24:34Speaker 8: Big Ten title contenders. And then the next group is, hey,
- 24:37Speaker 8: is there going to be a fourth team emerge? Is
- 24:39Speaker 8: there a fourth team in the college football playoff? And
- 24:41Speaker 8: there's a whole group of teams in that category. You know,
- 24:43Speaker 8: you could go obviously USC and what Lincoln Riley is
- 24:46Speaker 8: trying to get breakthrough for the first time with with
- 24:50Speaker 8: the Trojans. I think Washington's dark horse got to put
- 24:52Speaker 8: it in that category. Penn State's got a very friendly schedule.
- 24:55Speaker 3: And then Michigan.
- 24:57Speaker 8: They've got a brutal schedule but you still got Bryce
- 24:59Speaker 8: Underwood if he can really take that jump if Kyle
- 25:01Speaker 8: Whittingham can you know impact and and have a program
- 25:04Speaker 8: that is in his image tough physical athletic maybe they've
- 25:08Speaker 8: got a chance too so all of those teams and
- 25:10Speaker 8: maybe even Iowa based on their schedule are kind of
- 25:12Speaker 8: in that middle tier trying to fight to get into
- 25:15Speaker 8: that top group.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Okay Nicole I'm going to put you on the spot
- 25:18Speaker 5: best quarterback in the Big Ten oh Oh, that is.
- 25:21Speaker 8: Such a tough question. I go Dante Moore. I understand
- 25:25Speaker 8: all the arguments for all the other guys, especially Julian Sane, right?
- 25:27Speaker 8: Like he was fourth in the Heisman voting last year.
- 25:30Speaker 8: But I think it's Dante Moore. I just think he
- 25:32Speaker 8: obviously is pro-ready, but he chose to come back. And
- 25:36Speaker 8: he orchestrates such an explosive, electric offense. But it's his
- 25:42Speaker 8: playmaking ability that allows them to do that. I love Moore.
- 25:44Speaker 6: I love Dante.
- 25:45Speaker 4: Okay, I want to go to the state of Indiana,
- 25:47Speaker 4: not the school of Indiana. the most threatening college football
- 25:50Speaker 4: team this year in the state of Indiana is?
- 25:54Speaker 8: Okay, so that's a tough question for me because I
- 25:57Speaker 8: put Indiana as my preseason number one, but I have
- 26:01Speaker 8: Notre Dame winning a national championship.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Okay, I respect that.
- 26:03Speaker 8: And I have them beating Indiana to do so. So, like,
- 26:06Speaker 8: I'm all in on the state of Indiana. I do
- 26:09Speaker 8: think it's Notre Dame. Obviously, their season comes down to
- 26:12Speaker 8: just a couple of big games, but I think that
- 26:15Speaker 8: that is... the team that is best equipped to win
- 26:18Speaker 8: a national title, a quarterback who I think might end
- 26:21Speaker 8: up being the best quarterback in the country this year,
- 26:23Speaker 8: the best defender in the country in Leonard Moore. They
- 26:26Speaker 8: just don't have any questions. They don't have any weaknesses.
- 26:28Speaker 8: And I think they're going to handle those big moments
- 26:30Speaker 8: better than they did a year ago.
- 26:32Speaker 5: All right, Nicole, I'm going to take you down to
- 26:34Speaker 5: the SEC. University of Texas, Arch Manning obviously gets a
- 26:37Speaker 5: lot of attention.
- 26:38Speaker 3: Let me ask about Coach Steve Sarkeesian.
- 26:41Speaker 5: If Texas does not make the college football playoff, what
- 26:44Speaker 5: happens down in Austin?
- 26:47Speaker 8: I think it gets very uncomfortable. Like it's hard to
- 26:49Speaker 8: talk hot seat about some of these coaches that have,
- 26:52Speaker 8: you know, big buyouts, but big expectations. And we got
- 26:56Speaker 8: there right to the point with with James Franklin and
- 26:58Speaker 8: Brian Kelly last year that you would have said, you know,
- 27:00Speaker 8: people were being financially prudent. We wouldn't be having this conversation,
- 27:03Speaker 8: but that's not what college sports is. So I think
- 27:06Speaker 8: life does get very uncomfortable, especially just with the disappointment
- 27:09Speaker 8: of last year, not even making the playoffs. and all
- 27:12Speaker 8: the hype around Arch Manning if he does not develop him.
- 27:15Speaker 8: He's supposed to be an offensive guru. He's supposed to
- 27:17Speaker 8: have great quarterback play. But this year he added weapons
- 27:21Speaker 8: around Arch. He added the best running back and the
- 27:23Speaker 8: best receiver that were available in the transfer portal this year.
- 27:26Speaker 8: So there really shouldn't be any other questions, any other excuses.
- 27:33Speaker 8: I do think that they have a tough draw. The
- 27:35Speaker 8: SEC is going to be brutal with the nine conference games.
- 27:39Speaker 8: I think it still goes through Athens, but I, man,
- 27:43Speaker 8: I mean, it's such a tough question. I do think
- 27:45Speaker 8: that we're going to end up having hot seat conversations
- 27:47Speaker 8: about Steve Parkeesian, whether or not he chooses to maybe
- 27:50Speaker 8: look for other jobs and opportunities in the NFL or
- 27:52Speaker 8: something like that. Or we'll just be talking about his
- 27:56Speaker 8: job status because that's unacceptable, you know, especially after they
- 27:59Speaker 8: were a couple of plays away from making the national
- 28:00Speaker 8: championship game not very long ago.
- 28:02Speaker 4: All right, Nicole, let's stay in the SEC. Lane Kiffin's
- 28:05Speaker 4: getting all the coverage. LSU is good. I don't know
- 28:07Speaker 4: if they're, national title good, but I want to go
- 28:09Speaker 4: to Ole Miss. Trinidad Chambliss is still there. He's like
- 28:12Speaker 4: a Dr. Chambliss. He's been in college so long. But
- 28:15Speaker 4: Kiwan Lacy, they've got a coach that people aren't talking
- 28:18Speaker 4: about because they're in the rear view. More threatening this
- 28:21Speaker 4: year for the national title, Ole Miss or LSU?
- 28:24Speaker 8: I think it's LSU, but you're totally right about the
- 28:27Speaker 8: Ole Miss offense. They're going to put up a ton
- 28:30Speaker 8: of points, a ton of yards. Trinidad Chambliss will be
- 28:33Speaker 8: a finalist. He'll be in New York as a high
- 28:35Speaker 8: school I just I think that LSU with Sam Levitt,
- 28:41Speaker 8: when he's been healthy, we've seen this. It's been a
- 28:43Speaker 8: minute since he was healthy at Arizona State. We saw
- 28:45Speaker 8: them go on their magical run to the playoff. He
- 28:48Speaker 8: is a difference maker. He can make a lot of
- 28:49Speaker 8: plays that not a lot of guys can't. They obviously
- 28:52Speaker 8: spent big in that portal to get, you know, the
- 28:54Speaker 8: type of athletes that you need for LSU. There's so
- 28:57Speaker 8: much pressure, so much expectation on LSU to be ultra
- 29:00Speaker 8: competitive in year one. But I think they have the
- 29:02Speaker 8: talent to do that. Now, the question is, can they
- 29:06Speaker 8: handle that trip back to Oxford mentally, physically, emotionally? I mean,
- 29:09Speaker 8: that could derail a season. That could be difficult. Even
- 29:13Speaker 8: opening with Clemson with everything that's kind of clouded or
- 29:16Speaker 8: overshadowed this game because of eligibility issues as a potential distraction.
- 29:21Speaker 8: But Lane Kiffin has been very good at compartmentalizing over
- 29:23Speaker 8: the course of his career because there always seems to
- 29:25Speaker 8: be a distraction somewhere. So I'm not too, too worried
- 29:28Speaker 8: about those things. But I do think that their roster
- 29:31Speaker 8: should put them in that top grouping in the SEC.
- 29:34Speaker 8: And I do think not making the college football playoff
- 29:36Speaker 8: in year one, not advancing kind of far in it
- 29:39Speaker 8: would be a huge disadvantage. for Kiffin and company.
- 29:41Speaker 5: All right, Nicole, you mentioned Clemson. I know you got
- 29:44Speaker 5: some attention for some of your comments on Abbo Sweeney.
- 29:47Speaker 5: Is it possible that his old school approach is going
- 29:49Speaker 5: to work or is the.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Game passed him by?
- 29:52Speaker 8: That's been the question, and I think it continues to
- 29:55Speaker 8: be the question with him. I mean, he obviously feels
- 29:58Speaker 8: he was the king of college football like 10 years
- 30:01Speaker 8: ago and would love for college football to still be
- 30:04Speaker 8: where it was 10 years ago, where it was not
- 30:07Speaker 8: dominated by NIL and the portal and all of this
- 30:10Speaker 8: player movement. And you didn't have to re-recruit your roster.
- 30:14Speaker 8: He got great players and developed them at Clemson. He
- 30:17Speaker 8: had great coaches, a great offense coordinator, a great defense
- 30:19Speaker 8: coordinator that stayed with him for a very long time.
- 30:22Speaker 8: Some of them went on to other opportunities. He's a purist.
- 30:25Speaker 8: He wants them to truly be student athletes. And all
- 30:28Speaker 8: the reasons that everyone gets into coaching college football, he's
- 30:31Speaker 8: there for. Now the question is, you know, can they
- 30:34Speaker 8: actually do it at the high enough level to be
- 30:38Speaker 8: an ACC contender, to be a national title contender in
- 30:40Speaker 8: this era? I'm not sold on it.
- 30:43Speaker 4: I'm not sure.
- 30:44Speaker 8: But in a weird twist of fate, they're kind of
- 30:46Speaker 8: America's team right now against LSU this weekend. So maybe
- 30:50Speaker 8: this turns the tide.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot of upside for Davo in this game.
- 30:54Speaker 4: We do the Heisman a lot on this show, even
- 30:56Speaker 4: though it's week one, a lot. We're debuting getting the
- 30:58Speaker 4: Heisman tomorrow on Not So Fast. If I gave you
- 31:01Speaker 4: Arch Manning or the field for the Heisman, where are
- 31:04Speaker 4: you going?
- 31:05Speaker 8: I'm going with the field. I just think there's too
- 31:07Speaker 8: many other elite quarterbacks and programs that are going to
- 31:10Speaker 8: be in the national championship conversation. Some great running backs.
- 31:14Speaker 8: You still have like two of the best, the two
- 31:16Speaker 8: players that I'm most excited to watch this year, Jeremiah Smith,
- 31:20Speaker 8: Malachi Tony receivers, but they are household names. They could
- 31:23Speaker 8: get in the mix too. So I just think there's
- 31:25Speaker 8: too many other big name star players elsewhere.
- 31:29Speaker 6: Now, if Texas.
- 31:30Speaker 8: goes undefeated or goes on some crazy run and runs
- 31:33Speaker 8: through the SEC. That conversation changes because the spotlight is
- 31:37Speaker 8: on them and we'll be seeing that. But I just
- 31:40Speaker 8: think after how high the expectations started with him, I
- 31:44Speaker 8: just don't know if he can exceed it. And you
- 31:45Speaker 8: have so many other talented quarterbacks, which is mostly a
- 31:48Speaker 8: quarterback award these days.
- 31:49Speaker 4: Okay, we like to do a little lifestyle on this show,
- 31:51Speaker 4: not just the games. You've been around a little bit
- 31:53Speaker 4: with college football. You've been all over, and I'm going
- 31:55Speaker 4: to take Michigan off the board. If you had to
- 31:57Speaker 4: go tailgate for a weekend or recommend someone, a novice,
- 32:00Speaker 4: to just go tailgate, where the game may not be
- 32:02Speaker 4: the star, but the tailgate may be the star, give
- 32:04Speaker 4: us one or two you'd recommend.
- 32:06Speaker 8: Well, Penn State is awesome, and it's basically in the
- 32:10Speaker 8: middle of nowhere, right? So, like, all the tailgating just, like,
- 32:12Speaker 8: goes out from the stadium. They've got RV lots. They've
- 32:16Speaker 8: just got regular, you know, cars and tents and all
- 32:19Speaker 8: of that. I tried a deep-fried turkey leg there for
- 32:22Speaker 8: the very first time. It was phenomenal. And they can also,
- 32:26Speaker 8: very much like LSU, I put these two fan bases
- 32:28Speaker 8: in the same category, they can sustain the drinking throughout
- 32:32Speaker 8: the day.
- 32:33Speaker 4: Stamina is what you're saying.
- 32:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 32:35Speaker 8: Stamina, which I think is very, very impressive. And I
- 32:40Speaker 8: think that that's one that I.
- 32:41Speaker 4: Would give you.
- 32:42Speaker 8: And then I would say Wisconsin just because, again, the
- 32:44Speaker 8: stamina is there. There's also cheese curds.
- 32:47Speaker 4: There's broth.
- 32:47Speaker 8: There's really good food. And that is a also just
- 32:51Speaker 8: a lovely college town to just wander around.
- 32:53Speaker 4: Fantastic breakdown by you, by the way.
- 32:54Speaker 3: Fantastic.
- 32:56Speaker 5: Nicole, tell us about rushing the field. Did you ever
- 32:58Speaker 5: rush the field in Michigan? I mean, obviously you got
- 33:00Speaker 5: off to a bad start. I went to Dartmouth. We
- 33:03Speaker 5: rushed the library, not the field, unfortunately. Have you ever
- 33:06Speaker 5: been in that mosh pit of a field like that?
- 33:09Speaker 8: So I have not personally done it as a student because, again,
- 33:14Speaker 8: to your point, like Michigan, you're not supposed to be
- 33:16Speaker 8: rushing the field. But I have been in field storms
- 33:19Speaker 8: and court storms as a reporter and they get a
- 33:23Speaker 8: little crazy. I saw someone break either it was an
- 33:26Speaker 8: arm or a leg during a basketball court storm. Cause
- 33:29Speaker 8: those ones like you're right on the court and you
- 33:31Speaker 8: can just get on the players and the court very quickly. Um,
- 33:36Speaker 8: I was there when, uh, Iowa rushed the field when
- 33:38Speaker 8: they beat Penn state a couple of years back. Um,
- 33:41Speaker 8: and that was like the most polite field storm. Like
- 33:43Speaker 8: it was, it was crazy.
- 33:44Speaker 4: It was like a stroll.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 8: It was strong. They were like, Oh, her ways for
- 33:47Speaker 8: the reporters. The reporters need.
- 33:49Speaker 6: To get to the tunnel.
- 33:49Speaker 8: I was like, this is bizarre. You guys are just
- 33:52Speaker 8: too nice.
- 33:52Speaker 4: That was more of a field stroll than a field storm.
- 33:55Speaker 4: Before we get you out of here, we like to
- 33:57Speaker 4: do a thing. Such thing as a dumb question. Now,
- 34:00Speaker 4: you talked a little bit about the physicality. You've been
- 34:02Speaker 4: on many different fields. Have you ever been run over
- 34:04Speaker 4: or partially run over by a stray player on the sidelines, Nicole?
- 34:09Speaker 8: No, but you have to keep your head on its
- 34:11Speaker 8: level because I've seen that happen many times. But I
- 34:13Speaker 8: have not personally. I'm going to jinx myself by saying
- 34:15Speaker 8: that I have not had this.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Happen to me. What are you doing, Paul?
- 34:17Speaker 4: My bad.
- 34:18Speaker 5: We're going to watch all season long just to make
- 34:21Speaker 5: sure Nicole's okay. Nicole, can't wait for your new show
- 34:24Speaker 5: and to watch you all season long on NBC.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Thanks for joining us.
- 34:28Speaker 8: Thanks for having me, guys.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Thank you very much. Nicole, that's great. She went to Michigan.
- 34:32Speaker 4: She was at the 07 game versus Appalachian State. She's
- 34:35Speaker 4: been field storms, court storms. I'm so jealous we're not
- 34:39Speaker 4: in Michigan with her this weekend.
- 34:40Speaker 3: Oh, my God. I want to rush the field just
- 34:42Speaker 3: one time.
- 34:43Speaker 4: They don't do that at Dartmouth, right?
- 34:44Speaker 3: No, they really don't. All right, coming up next, we
- 34:47Speaker 3: have the Clip Joy. We'll hear from DP and guests.
- 34:50Speaker 3: Not so fast. That was great.
- 34:53Speaker 5: But, yeah, I've got to be honest. I'd be nervous
- 34:55Speaker 5: doing sideline. You really do have to keep your head
- 34:57Speaker 5: on a swivel.
- 34:57Speaker 4: Yeah, low base, head on a swivel.
- 34:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:59Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 35:07Speaker 1: I wonder if Aaron Rodgers would have come back if
- 35:10Speaker 1: you were still the head coach. Did you have conversations?
- 35:13Speaker 1: You know, Mike comes in, but I wonder, you know,
- 35:17Speaker 1: what would have happened?
- 35:19Speaker 9: I believe he would have. Just spending 12 months with Aaron, man,
- 35:24Speaker 9: this guy has a love affair with football and all
- 35:27Speaker 9: components of it. The process, you know, meetings, team development.
- 35:34Speaker 9: He loved training camp last year. You know what I mean?
- 35:37Speaker 3: Not a lot of guys, man.
- 35:39Speaker 9: Enjoy training camp settings the way I watched him enjoy it.
- 35:42Speaker 9: And so I just think, man, he's built for it.
- 35:46Speaker 9: He's healthy. He's certainly capable. And so I think that
- 35:50Speaker 9: he would have strongly considered it regardless of circumstance. That's
- 35:54Speaker 9: just my gut feeling.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast with Paxton Perloff. That was
- 35:58Speaker 4: Mike Tomlin, the former Steeler coach, the new NBC analyst.
- 36:01Speaker 4: There's a lot to chop up there. First of all,
- 36:03Speaker 4: This stoic leader of men, he was talking to us
- 36:06Speaker 4: like he just came back from Margaritaville. The guy is
- 36:08Speaker 4: relaxed and chill.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. I was looking back at the archives. Mike
- 36:12Speaker 3: Tomlin hasn't been on that much through the years.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Honestly, I can remember maybe one eight years ago Mike
- 36:19Speaker 4: Tomlin appearance on the show. He just doesn't do a
- 36:21Speaker 4: lot besides taking care of the local market. And when
- 36:23Speaker 4: he does do interviews, he's coach mode. And this was
- 36:28Speaker 4: retired coach mode.
- 36:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I just thought Dan threw a bit of a
- 36:30Speaker 5: fastball there about Aaron Rodgers, but that's It's a question
- 36:33Speaker 5: we're all wondering. Was that the reason that Rodgers came back?
- 36:36Speaker 5: And Tomlin denied it and said the guy loves football.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm not sure I totally bought that.
- 36:41Speaker 3: But you know what? He seems pro Aaron Rodgers.
- 36:43Speaker 4: It's got to be weird for Mike Tomlin because you're
- 36:45Speaker 4: no longer the Steelers coach, but you feel like you're
- 36:48Speaker 4: still a voice of the Steelers franchise.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Yes, absolutely.
- 36:51Speaker 5: But that's a good omen, by the way, for a broadcaster. And,
- 36:55Speaker 5: you know, Dan's really good with former players and former coaches.
- 36:57Speaker 5: He tends to get a lot out of them. Will
- 37:00Speaker 5: Tomlin be able to do that at halftime of big games?
- 37:02Speaker 3: I think so. I think he'll call out guys.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I think Dan talked about this. Dan hosts Football
- 37:06Speaker 4: Night in America for many years, and he worked with
- 37:08Speaker 4: different people, and he said, like, you have so many stories,
- 37:11Speaker 4: and you just start bringing them out. And Dan is
- 37:13Speaker 4: a master at, like, even off the air in a
- 37:15Speaker 4: commercial break, he'll find out a story and be like,
- 37:17Speaker 4: I'm going to ask you about that. And he'll just
- 37:19Speaker 4: tell them, I'm going to ask you about that. I've
- 37:20Speaker 4: seen him do it. And it's masterful. But these coaches
- 37:23Speaker 4: and these players don't realize how many stories they have.
- 37:25Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
- 37:25Speaker 5: And Tomlin, nobody says less with more sometimes. Some of
- 37:29Speaker 5: the Tomlinisms that make no sense. I hope he does
- 37:33Speaker 5: a couple of those too. I love, if anyone could do,
- 37:35Speaker 5: I can't do it, but a Mike Tomlin impersonation is
- 37:37Speaker 5: always funny.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to bring the voice down. All right.
- 37:39Speaker 4: Earlier today on the Dan Padgett Show, Pablo Torre, if
- 37:41Speaker 4: Pablo Torre finds out, he was on the show and
- 37:44Speaker 4: he has been in the show a lot lately because
- 37:47Speaker 4: the thing with the Clippers, it all came out yesterday,
- 37:49Speaker 4: the punishment. And Dan asked Pablo Torre, What's next with
- 37:52Speaker 4: this story?
- 37:55Speaker 10: Well, let's just take Steve Ballmer at his word. He
- 37:59Speaker 10: has written a letter via his very expensive attorneys to
- 38:03Speaker 10: Adam Silver blaming this podcaster for getting the NBA to
- 38:08Speaker 10: do a prejudiced investigation. And at first, after the ruling
- 38:11Speaker 10: came out, he threatened arbitration. And in the NBA, what
- 38:15Speaker 10: Adam Silver knows better than Steve Ballmer and his lawyers
- 38:18Speaker 10: know apparently is that arbitration can only be activated by
- 38:21Speaker 10: the unions. And so arbitration, because of that settlement, is
- 38:25Speaker 10: off the table. Can't go to arbitration. What can Steve
- 38:30Speaker 10: Ballmer do? He can literally sue the NBA. He can
- 38:34Speaker 10: sue Adam Silver. He can sue me. He can sue
- 38:36Speaker 10: Wachtell Lipton. He can sue you.
- 38:37Speaker 4: He can sue everybody.
- 38:39Speaker 10: And that opens the door to, spoiler alert, more discovery
- 38:43Speaker 10: of documents.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Paul, I can't remember a journalist who deserves a victory
- 38:48Speaker 5: lap more than Pablo Torre. Because as he mentioned there,
- 38:51Speaker 5: bombers denied it all, said this podcaster is coming out
- 38:54Speaker 5: of nowhere with these facts.
- 38:56Speaker 3: All, to me, proven to be true. Pablo was right
- 38:58Speaker 3: on from the start.
- 38:59Speaker 4: Yeah, it'd be shocking if this has a... I think
- 39:01Speaker 4: the story has other developments in it, but I don't
- 39:03Speaker 4: think it's going to go the other way. It feels
- 39:05Speaker 4: like Pablo Torre can do the Larry Bird three-point shooting contest,
- 39:09Speaker 4: finger up, it's over, Johnny.
- 39:10Speaker 3: And I... I'm with the NBA. I don't love bombers
- 39:14Speaker 3: denying everything.
- 39:14Speaker 5: I mean, if you did it, at a certain point,
- 39:16Speaker 5: you're going to have to come clean, but they are
- 39:18Speaker 5: still fighting, Paul.
- 39:18Speaker 4: I don't think the NFL would let this happen. I
- 39:20Speaker 4: think the NFL and Roger Goodell would say to the owner, look,
- 39:23Speaker 4: we're going to make an agreement here, and you're going
- 39:25Speaker 4: to maybe have to eat this and eat this punishment,
- 39:27Speaker 4: but maybe more of a mild punishment. because the NFL
- 39:30Speaker 4: doesn't really go scorched earth. They go mildly scorched.
- 39:32Speaker 5: Can I remind you of Spygate? Hey, can I remind
- 39:35Speaker 5: you of Deflategate?
- 39:36Speaker 4: But okay, I'll challenge you back on that because I
- 39:39Speaker 4: think the Patriots lost one first round pick on that.
- 39:42Speaker 4: And if you compare one to five, I think five
- 39:44Speaker 4: is a lot more than one.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Yeah, but you know what hurt the Patriots is that,
- 39:48Speaker 3: in my opinion... They did it.
- 39:51Speaker 10: Yes.
- 39:51Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 39:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 5: So that was a problem. I think Bomber did it, too.
- 39:55Speaker 5: So he should follow the lead. He, at some point,
- 39:57Speaker 5: has to say, you're right.
- 39:58Speaker 3: Pablo, you're right. NBA, you're right. Just give me my
- 40:00Speaker 3: draft picks back. All right.
- 40:01Speaker 4: That was a little basketball. Let's get back to the NFL,
- 40:03Speaker 4: the season in six days. Hot new segment here on
- 40:06Speaker 4: Not So Fast, Perloff. People are already talking about it
- 40:08Speaker 4: before it even happened. This is called Superlofftives.
- 40:12Speaker 6: Superlofftives.
- 40:14Speaker 3: Superlofftives.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Explain this to the country.
- 40:16Speaker 5: Okay, these are the most something.
- 40:18Speaker 3: You know, superlative, most something.
- 40:20Speaker 5: I was originally called the Indomitian Superlofftives, but the graphics
- 40:23Speaker 5: people said that.
- 40:24Speaker 3: Was too long and too hard to spell.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Got it.
- 40:25Speaker 5: All right, so I'm going to do three Superlofftives, starting
- 40:28Speaker 5: with the most overhyped team.
- 40:30Speaker 3: I'm going to do overhyped, underhyped, and properly hyped.
- 40:34Speaker 5: Most overhyped team coming into the 2026 season. Most overhyped
- 40:38Speaker 5: team coming into pretty much every season. I'm not going
- 40:41Speaker 5: to go too far than the normal. The Dallas Cowboys
- 40:44Speaker 5: are the most overhyped team in the NFL. Their win total, Paul,
- 40:47Speaker 5: is at nine and a half games. This is a
- 40:49Speaker 5: team that won seven games last year. So already that's
- 40:52Speaker 5: a jump. But I looked at the DraftKings numbers. Guess
- 40:54Speaker 5: what percentage of the public is choosing the over on
- 40:57Speaker 5: nine and a half wins?
- 40:59Speaker 3: Over 90%, 91% go over on the Cowboys wins.
- 41:03Speaker 5: Now, everyone thinks their defense is fixed, in part because
- 41:05Speaker 5: they drafted Caleb Downs, a safety out of Ohio State.
- 41:08Speaker 3: He's going to be a great player.
- 41:09Speaker 5: But when is a rookie safety completely transformed a defense?
- 41:14Speaker 5: I'm still worried about the defense. Listen, they've had great
- 41:17Speaker 5: Dak Prescott seasons before. Maybe they get to double-digit wins,
- 41:20Speaker 5: but I'm not scared that they're going to make the
- 41:22Speaker 5: NFC title game for the first time since 96, Paul.
- 41:25Speaker 3: I think the hype is out of control.
- 41:27Speaker 4: Yeah, I like you poo-pooing the Cowboys because everybody wants
- 41:30Speaker 4: to put them into the broadcasting. I will say, though,
- 41:32Speaker 4: I like the direction of their team, and I think
- 41:34Speaker 4: that defense next year, there's always next year for the Cowboys.
- 41:37Speaker 4: I think next year the Cowboys could be their season
- 41:39Speaker 4: because Caleb Downs will be a sophomore, second-year player. They'll
- 41:43Speaker 4: kind of develop their defense.
- 41:44Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Yeah, and then hopefully we're sitting right here. Next year
- 41:47Speaker 5: I will have the most overhyped team.
- 41:48Speaker 3: All right, next. Underhyped, baby. Underhyped.
- 41:51Speaker 5: Okay, here's another team no one's talking about. The Jacksonville
- 41:54Speaker 5: Jaguars won 13 games last year. Their win total's at
- 41:56Speaker 5: eight and a half somehow. And I don't hear anyone
- 41:59Speaker 5: talking about Jacksonville. They had the number 11 defense in
- 42:02Speaker 5: the NFL. Trevor Lawrence took another step. And here's what
- 42:06Speaker 5: I think the special sauce is.
- 42:07Speaker 3: Gonna be this year, Paul.
- 42:08Speaker 5: No one's talking about Travis Hunter anymore.
- 42:10Speaker 3: It doesn't even come up.
- 42:11Speaker 5: I think he's going to play cornerback a lot, and
- 42:13Speaker 5: I think that's probably where he should be.
- 42:15Speaker 3: He's going to have an impact.
- 42:16Speaker 5: He's going to be a playmaker, a little bit like
- 42:18Speaker 5: Deion Sanders was with the Cowboys and the Niners and
- 42:21Speaker 5: the Falcons. I think you're going to see some big
- 42:23Speaker 5: plays on defense out of the former Heisman winner. I
- 42:28Speaker 5: don't understand why is everyone down on Jackson. I don't
- 42:30Speaker 5: think people like Liam Cohen. I think he's going to
- 42:32Speaker 5: be a really good coach. But Jacksonville deserves more hype.
- 42:34Speaker 4: All right, quickly, I like the superlative badge. I would
- 42:36Speaker 4: like one for my shirt. It'll be coming on Trevor Lawrence.
- 42:39Speaker 4: Let's go right to properly hyped.
- 42:42Speaker 5: Okay, properly hyped is tough. But I like the Houston
- 42:45Speaker 5: Texans as the right amount of hype. Because there's pretty
- 42:48Speaker 5: good hype, but there's always a question mark.
- 42:50Speaker 3: We love the defense. Number one defense in the NFL.
- 42:52Speaker 5: Will Anderson and Daniil Hunter, unstoppable on the D-line.
- 42:56Speaker 3: But we're not quite sure about C.J. Stroud.
- 42:58Speaker 5: They are ninth in Super Bowl odds. Paul, I think
- 43:01Speaker 5: that's the proper level of hype. I think people are
- 43:04Speaker 5: viewing this Texans team.
- 43:05Speaker 3: The right way.
- 43:06Speaker 5: They are a very good team. They need to show
- 43:09Speaker 5: something on offense. And generally, looking around predictions, that's what
- 43:12Speaker 5: everyone is saying about them. I have them as my
- 43:14Speaker 5: properly hyped team.
- 43:15Speaker 4: I think that's fair because they feel good, but they
- 43:18Speaker 4: don't feel completely threatening because of C.J.
- 43:20Speaker 7: Stroud.
- 43:20Speaker 5: Right, and it won't be disappointing if they don't make
- 43:22Speaker 5: the Super Bowl, but you wouldn't be surprised.
- 43:24Speaker 3: Properly hyped.
- 43:25Speaker 4: That sounds good to me. All right, coming up next,
- 43:27Speaker 4: constructive criticism and, oh, the feel-good. Never forget the feel-good.
- 43:31Speaker 4: Stick around. Not so fast. Coming back.
- 43:34Speaker 3: Welcome back.
- 43:35Speaker 5: Not so fast. NBC Sports Now and Peacock. We're a
- 43:38Speaker 5: week away from the big game on NBC, Seahawks-Patriots. And
- 43:42Speaker 5: right after that, we go to Australia, Paul. Now, there
- 43:45Speaker 5: are two different strategies here. San Francisco left yesterday, and
- 43:49Speaker 5: I think they have probably touched down in Melbourne.
- 43:52Speaker 3: Melbourne? Melbourne? Melbourne? We're going to have to work on
- 43:55Speaker 3: that next week.
- 43:56Speaker 5: The Rams are waiting until next week, and they are
- 43:58Speaker 5: going to arrive the day before the game. In your mind,
- 44:01Speaker 5: what's a better strategy for adjusting to the time zone?
- 44:03Speaker 4: Oh, we're breaking down the game by time zone and rest.
- 44:06Speaker 3: Yes. You know, it's a 17-hour difference, by the way.
- 44:08Speaker 8: Right.
- 44:09Speaker 4: I had no idea.
- 44:09Speaker 3: All right.
- 44:10Speaker 4: I like what the Rams are doing. It's like when
- 44:12Speaker 4: you go to Vegas. You just ignore the clocks. The
- 44:14Speaker 4: Rams are going to go fly there, and they should
- 44:16Speaker 4: just stay on L.A.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Time.
- 44:18Speaker 4: You get in. You do L.A. time stuff. I think
- 44:20Speaker 4: the game, the kickoff is 1035 local time. You just
- 44:24Speaker 4: ignore everything local. It's like going to a country without
- 44:26Speaker 4: seeing a country. That's the ramp strategy.
- 44:28Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:28Speaker 5: You know, they, they actually had a sleep expert who
- 44:30Speaker 5: said that's a better way. I get that. You know,
- 44:33Speaker 5: when I go on vacation, if it's a different time zone,
- 44:35Speaker 5: I feel much better four days in than the first day.
- 44:38Speaker 5: I think, you know, the Niners, they do some tourist stuff.
- 44:40Speaker 3: See, uh, A koala bear? I don't know.
- 44:42Speaker 5: The local Sydney Opera House, which is not in Melbourne.
- 44:46Speaker 4: That's all we know.
- 44:48Speaker 3: I don't know. This will play out on the field.
- 44:49Speaker 3: And both teams are old and have a lot of injuries,
- 44:51Speaker 3: so this should be interesting.
- 44:52Speaker 4: All right, it's time for a little constructive criticism. We
- 44:55Speaker 4: want to hear from you, what you have to say
- 44:56Speaker 4: about our show, our shirts, sports, whatever it may be.
- 44:59Speaker 4: Here's one, Perloff. How about this? Let's check out this
- 45:02Speaker 4: tweet coming in. A Magic Genie gives you one wish.
- 45:06Speaker 4: You could own any sports franchise in the world. Premier League, F1, anything. Okay.
- 45:12Speaker 4: I'll go first.
- 45:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 45:13Speaker 4: I will say I'm going to go with the, and
- 45:15Speaker 4: I've given this very little thought, the San Diego Padres.
- 45:18Speaker 4: I would love just to walk in every day, live
- 45:21Speaker 4: in a condo by the ballpark, walk in, grab a beer,
- 45:23Speaker 4: and watch my Padres. I love earth tones. I love
- 45:26Speaker 4: the colors. I'd be a Padres owner and just sit
- 45:28Speaker 4: there in center field and join my team.
- 45:30Speaker 5: That is a great call, and who doesn't want to
- 45:33Speaker 5: live in San Diego? Would you have an apartment inside
- 45:35Speaker 5: the stadium?
- 45:36Speaker 4: Can we do that?
- 45:37Speaker 3: Well, don't they have that in Toronto?
- 45:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm in. I'm doing that.
- 45:40Speaker 3: All right, I want the Cincinnati Bengals.
- 45:42Speaker 5: I want a team that has never won at the
- 45:43Speaker 5: highest level, because if I do that, I am a
- 45:45Speaker 5: god in that city. So I'm going with the Bengals,
- 45:48Speaker 5: look at the Lions, definitely NFL, and definitely not a
- 45:52Speaker 5: high bar.
- 45:53Speaker 4: But you don't like the chili dog situation in Cincinnati.
- 45:57Speaker 5: No, not a chili. A little watery for me, Paul.
- 46:00Speaker 4: A little watery, a little watery. All right, let's get
- 46:02Speaker 4: to some leftovers. We always have room for leftovers. College
- 46:05Speaker 4: football starts tonight. It's a mishmash of games, some directional schools,
- 46:09Speaker 4: some hyphens. I got Akron at number 25, Missouri.
- 46:12Speaker 3: Okay.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I got Idaho at number 21, Utah. I got Eastern Illinois,
- 46:17Speaker 4: quarterbacks from Eastern Illinois.
- 46:18Speaker 3: Well, that's Jimmy G, right?
- 46:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:21Speaker 4: Sean Payton.
- 46:21Speaker 3: Ooh.
- 46:22Speaker 4: And Tony Romo, all Eastern Illinois Panthers. I think they're
- 46:25Speaker 4: the Panthers. Against Minnesota on Peacock.
- 46:27Speaker 3: Oh, Drake Lindsey, by the way, big-time NFL prospect, Minnesota.
- 46:30Speaker 3: Watch out. Yep.
- 46:32Speaker 4: And the good game tonight, or the saucy game tonight,
- 46:34Speaker 4: would be Georgia at, I'm sorry, Colorado at Georgia Tech.
- 46:37Speaker 4: Great uniforms for Georgia Tech.
- 46:39Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh.
- 46:40Speaker 5: I think you were talking about this earlier. This is
- 46:42Speaker 5: not the Colorado debut of a couple years ago.
- 46:44Speaker 3: No.
- 46:44Speaker 4: Marvin and I were talking on the Dan Patrick Show two,
- 46:47Speaker 4: three years ago, his appointment programming with Deion. and everybody
- 46:50Speaker 4: was there. I think Big Noon Kickoff was there a
- 46:52Speaker 4: couple times.
- 46:52Speaker 5: Yeah, Lil Wayne, The Rock, everybody was there, but not
- 46:55Speaker 5: so much anymore. I believe Georgia Tech has Fernando Mendoza's brother.
- 46:59Speaker 5: I have to double-check that.
- 47:00Speaker 4: Tune in tonight to watch Fernando Mendoza's brother.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Yeah, well, that's not bad. They got something there. Actually,
- 47:06Speaker 5: back to the Minnesota game. Drake Lindsey, you know, NFL
- 47:09Speaker 5: loves height. This guy's huge, Paul.
- 47:10Speaker 3: Watch him. Watch him now. He's going to work his
- 47:12Speaker 3: way into first-round mocks, I believe.
- 47:13Speaker 4: You are a heightist. But college football, we got five
- 47:16Speaker 4: days of college football. We got Western Michigan, Michigan this weekend.
- 47:19Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Notre Dame versus Wisconsin at Lambeau. That's a bonus coverage game.
- 47:24Speaker 3: Oh, that'd be so fun. Are you going to make
- 47:25Speaker 3: it out for that game? I know it's a long weekend.
- 47:27Speaker 4: I'm considering it. I have talked to NBC, and they
- 47:30Speaker 4: said they didn't actually respond to my text. All right,
- 47:32Speaker 4: it's time for the feel good. We're going to get
- 47:34Speaker 4: you out of here feeling good before we wrap up
- 47:35Speaker 4: our day on Not So Fast.
- 47:37Speaker 8: Here we go.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Pearl, you're going to like this.
- 47:39Speaker 3: Okay.
- 47:40Speaker 4: I'm a dog owner. Oh, look at that.
- 47:43Speaker 7: Aw.
- 47:43Speaker 4: It's canine picture day at the University of Cincinnati Police Department.
- 47:47Speaker 4: And look at that fellow, Remy. He looks like a
- 47:50Speaker 4: German shorthair.
- 47:52Speaker 3: That is a good boy. That's fantastic.
- 47:57Speaker 4: I love that guy.
- 47:58Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, you have a dog, Paul.
- 48:00Speaker 5: Do you ever take photos, like family photos, and have
- 48:02Speaker 5: trouble corralling?
- 48:03Speaker 3: It's Archie, right?
- 48:05Speaker 4: It's more, yeah, Archie the dog. He behaves. It's the
- 48:07Speaker 4: kids you have to corral, not the dog.
- 48:09Speaker 3: Was Archie named after Archie Manning? Archie?
- 48:12Speaker 4: I think it was named after Archie Manning.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Archie Griffith, two-time Heisman winner?
- 48:15Speaker 4: All of the above.
- 48:17Speaker 3: That was cute, by the way.
- 48:18Speaker 4: All right, six days to the NFL season.
- 48:20Speaker 3: What else?
- 48:20Speaker 4: We're ramping up. You getting ready? You feeling good?
- 48:22Speaker 5: Well, yeah, a lot of college this weekend. I mean,
- 48:24Speaker 5: you don't have your one versus two like last year,
- 48:27Speaker 5: but I got to be honest. I have to do
- 48:28Speaker 5: a lot of picks, a lot of fantasy drafts. We're
- 48:30Speaker 5: going to do Super Bowl picks next week.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Yeah, Super Bowl picks next week. College football picks tomorrow.
- 48:34Speaker 4: Heisman picks tomorrow. We're going to give them the Heisman
- 48:37Speaker 4: on this show. And, of course, the AFC North. We'll
- 48:40Speaker 4: get to all of that.
- 48:40Speaker 5: And I heard a rumor we have a very special
- 48:42Speaker 5: guest possibly tomorrow.
- 48:44Speaker 4: He might be right down the hall from us right now.
- 48:46Speaker 4: All right, thanks a lot for watching Not So Fast
- 48:48Speaker 4: right here on NBC Sports Now. And tune in to
- 48:50Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick Show, 9 to noon Eastern every day,
- 48:52Speaker 4: DP and the boys right down the hall. Thanks for
- 48:55Speaker 4: coming with us. Take care.
