- 0:27OK, so hey everybody, welcome back.
- 0:30We are live once again on the Trap Tribe live session,
- 0:37coaching session. I'm here with Coach Trent
- 0:40Deadman. Of Altamont High School.
- 0:43Woo, I'm excited. Thank you for joining us, Trent.
- 0:46How are you, brother? I am wonderful coach.
- 0:49Thank you for for putting this together and and for for having
- 0:53me on. Absolutely.
- 0:55Yeah, Yeah, it is fun. It is fun.
- 0:58So we're going to get into a conversation here, y'all.
- 1:00We're going to talk about how we build up better athletes across
- 1:04maybe the multiple sports and using some limited resources.
- 1:08So I want you to make sure that you grab your favorite beverage,
- 1:11get grab your favorite snack, get comfortable, take a bunch of
- 1:14notes. If you have questions, please,
- 1:17by all means, feel free to throw them in the chat.
- 1:19We're live on on YouTube. We're live on Zoom.
- 1:22We were in the track drive and you got any questions?
- 1:24Even if you're on Twitter, feel free to throw anything out
- 1:27there. Matter of fact, throw some
- 1:28curveballs at him just to see if he can answer this question.
- 1:30I'm just kidding. Don't mess him up.
- 1:32But we're going to have some fun here and we hope that you get a
- 1:35lot of value out of this. I don't want to waste any time.
- 1:38So I'm going to open this thing up like I always do with this
- 1:42simple question, coach. So tell us a little bit about
- 1:44your program. Tell about little bits about
- 1:46your philosophy, who you are, the nuts and bolts of who you
- 1:49are and your program, right? So I'd love to hear that.
- 1:52What is it about you and who are who are you and what is your
- 1:55program all about? Yeah, right on.
- 1:58So I'm in, I'll be in. It'll be my 13th year coaching,
- 2:04you know, as it in some capacity tracking cross country.
- 2:09So yeah, yeah, only been a head coach officially since 2020 on
- 2:15the high school side. I I did start a cross country
- 2:18team on the on the middle school side.
- 2:20That was cool. So still got that going.
- 2:24But on the high school side, I've only been that the head
- 2:26coach since 2020. So that was a wild year to start
- 2:30coaching. You know, we were the, the
- 2:34weekend, I'm getting the girls prepped for our first indoor
- 2:38meet of the season. And then we get, we get the, the
- 2:41message that Friday that it's cancelled.
- 2:42So I got, I got, I got to tell him go home.
- 2:46And then, and then we never practiced again and never saw
- 2:48him again. It's sad.
- 2:50So that was the start of my, my head coaching career.
- 2:55So that was kind of interesting. Jeez, that's a crazy start to
- 2:58it. And I and I remember those,
- 2:59those years and when we were getting ready, everybody's amped
- 3:02up and then we're like, hey, the world shut down.
- 3:04Yes. What?
- 3:06What just. Happened, I know, and I, you
- 3:09know, I, I've been, I moved back to my hometown after a little a
- 3:14few years away and, and it was always the assistant coach and
- 3:18it was always around the team and helping out girls team, boys
- 3:21team didn't matter mostly on the distance side a lot of times,
- 3:26but was always applying anytime those head coach jobs came up
- 3:30when I was always applying and then finally got it in 2020.
- 3:33It's like, all right, here we go.
- 3:35I'm so excited and then boom, it gets shut down.
- 3:38So that that was rough. That was rough, but then came,
- 3:41came back the next year and, and, and then we had a state
- 3:44champion. So that was cool.
- 3:45That was a good that was a good year, too.
- 3:48Hurry up and wait, right? Exactly.
- 3:51So anyway, the coaching journey to head coach.
- 3:53Yeah, so now transition to the boys head coach now.
- 3:59So I've got a awesome new girls head coach now.
- 4:02So I've been the boys head coach now since 22.
- 4:08And so we're coming into like the first year of like my, the
- 4:11freshman that I, you know, kids that I've had since freshman
- 4:14and, or, you know, they don't know any different as far as
- 4:16coaching goes. So like, I can say it's like my
- 4:19program now, so to speak. I don't like to say I don't like
- 4:21to like my, it's ours. You know, I like to use the, my
- 4:23word. But anyway, so that's, that's
- 4:26what, you know, how my, my coaching journey.
- 4:28I'm, I'm the also the cross country coach at the high
- 4:31school. I got lots of hats I wear.
- 4:33I'm doing 2 two teams in one season.
- 4:35I'm doing a junior high team in the high school team, and then
- 4:38I'm doing the high school boys on the on the track side.
- 4:41So. Holy moly.
- 4:43Yeah, Well, we're a small town, you know, everybody's got to do
- 4:45a little bit of everything. Right.
- 4:47Yeah. So as long as it's not dairy,
- 4:51you know, like that show it welcome to dairy.
- 4:53As long as it's not dairy, you know, we're, we're a small town
- 4:56type of that, you know. Yeah.
- 4:57No, no, we keep it. We keep it PG and we're good.
- 5:02Yeah, it's no, it's fun though, because you know, especially
- 5:06like some of these kids on the, because I'm, if I'm getting them
- 5:10in, in cross country, as you know, 5th and 6th graders, by
- 5:13the time they're seniors, you know, I've seen these kids for
- 5:16eight years. So I really get an opportunity
- 5:19to coach them up and, and, and see them grow and mature and,
- 5:23and progress. And, you know, we've, we've had
- 5:26some really good success stories.
- 5:27That's been fun. Dude, that's that's an amazing
- 5:30advantage it. Kind of is.
- 5:33And I'm the PE and I'm the junior high PE teacher over
- 5:35there too. So it's like, I know like I've
- 5:38got I've got stats on it. I can tell you their broad
- 5:41jumps. I can tell you their vertical.
- 5:42Like I got stats on all these kids.
- 5:44Yeah. So I'm like, all right, I know
- 5:46who's coming up. I know who I got, who I can put
- 5:48where in a few years, you know I.
- 5:50Do it's insane. You know what?
- 5:52It's crazy. I.
- 5:53Can play the I can play the long, long game.
- 5:56That part, it's like, yo, you got years to stack all their
- 5:58models, especially at cross country, right?
- 6:00Because cross cross country developed, it's stacking miles
- 6:02over years, right, And you just get a little bit better and
- 6:04better every year. Totally that advantage from from
- 6:09the middle school all the way up.
- 6:11Man, I would like just fight a polar bear for that type of
- 6:15advantage, right? Right, it is.
- 6:16Yeah. Shout out.
- 6:17Shout out to Coach Berry. Granted, Berry.
- 6:19I always. He said.
- 6:21It's like they get a PhD. He's like, it's like 8 years.
- 6:24It's like 8 years in the program.
- 6:25It's like that's that's kind of true.
- 6:26That's a fun analogy to think of it that way.
- 6:29And some of these kids do by that, you know, these kids that
- 6:31when they're seniors, if they're going to like, you know, we've
- 6:34got a freshman. He went D1 Eastern this year.
- 6:36He's our jumper, our our state champion last year, You know,
- 6:40like he's become a student of his sport for real.
- 6:42Like he, I, I coached, I coached myself out of a job like by his
- 6:46senior year, like I can't help you, man.
- 6:48You need to go go talk to your college coach by now, you know,
- 6:51like, yeah, that and and you want that.
- 6:53You want those kids to to get that good and and to want to
- 6:56know about it. Right.
- 6:58That's that's exceptionally that's exceptional way to do
- 7:01they think about things. Rather I should say, because you
- 7:04do want them to be able to move on to the next level and then
- 7:06continue to challenge them. But you know, they they
- 7:09shouldn't want to have to stay with you for the rest of their
- 7:12life, right? You want to you want to coach
- 7:13yourself out of a job and it's like so.
- 7:15You should progress beyond me, I hope for that point.
- 7:18Right. So let's switch here in a little
- 7:20bit. So I want to go you, you talked
- 7:23about having a, a, a, an access to the, the middle school is all
- 7:29the way through the high school is right.
- 7:30And now your track programs running, you're a head coach.
- 7:33And now you've got your first set of seniors coming up, right?
- 7:37This I'm going to tell you right now, you're going to cry like a
- 7:39baby when they graduate. It's inevitable, right?
- 7:43But let's talk about those, those systems that you already
- 7:45have in place, right? So we, we were rolling here on
- 7:49the premise of the simple systems that you do have in
- 7:52place because you have to have a system in order to be
- 7:54successful. So what does that really look
- 7:56like from week to week, right? They talked about Coach Beery
- 7:58working with you, right? What is that?
- 8:00What does that system look like? What are those conversations
- 8:03like? Kind of walk us through maybe
- 8:04even some examples of how you structure these programs or
- 8:09these these week to week plans for your athletes.
- 8:14For sure. Yeah, well, when I'll, I'll,
- 8:18I'll jump back to when I started, like going back to that
- 8:212020 season, you know, then this before I even started working
- 8:24with coach Bury. But you know, I had, I had been
- 8:27in the program, had been been an assistant, you know, and had
- 8:30been around a lot of these kids and it, it especially on the
- 8:36girls side, it was toxic like like as far as the culture was.
- 8:39And so I knew like when I took over, like outside of like how
- 8:44we're going to train, like we, there definitely needed to be a
- 8:48culture shift, you know, so that a, so we could get numbers out.
- 8:52Like our girls numbers were, were so low.
- 8:55Like we, we couldn't, we couldn't fill a van, you know,
- 8:59like there was like 3 girls out by the end.
- 9:02They were they were they were quitting and really talented
- 9:05girls, girls that were getting talked to by colleges like
- 9:07should it should have done it, you know, after high school, you
- 9:10know, should have been successful, but they just they
- 9:12just fell out of love with the sport, you know, through through
- 9:15some just toxic relationship kind of stuff.
- 9:18So there was definitely some like culture building that had
- 9:19to happen there for sure. So I knew that we had to address
- 9:23that somehow, you know, and at the same time, like, I don't
- 9:27want to pigeonhole myself like into a style of coaching, but
- 9:30like feed the Cavs was definitely like firing up
- 9:33whenever I was taking over the head coaching positions.
- 9:37And one thing we were lacking was speed and any kind of like
- 9:42an identity. And so that was a way for us to
- 9:47tap into like, who are we and what are we doing here?
- 9:50You know, like it was just like it was this coach would the
- 9:55coach didn't really have any progression or any rhyme or
- 9:59reason behind why they were doing anything.
- 10:02And it was like, we, we've got to give ourselves some purpose
- 10:04and some meaning, you know, and, and so by writing stuff down,
- 10:09recording, ranking, publish, you know, like we, they weren't
- 10:12taking any times in practice, you know, they weren't tracking
- 10:15PRS and progressions and stuff. Like it was almost like a
- 10:18workout club. Like they were just doing stuff
- 10:21to do. It's like, no, we're, we're a
- 10:23track team. Like we, we, we compete.
- 10:26We're, we're, we're chasing performance here.
- 10:29So let's start looking at numbers.
- 10:31Let's start actually like, are we are we getting better?
- 10:36You know, other than just at meets where we're like we're
- 10:39running to the ground, you know, like everybody's got everybody's
- 10:42got 4 events every single meet, you know, like that two mile
- 10:46girl doesn't need to also run the four by one.
- 10:48That's stupid. Like what are you doing?
- 10:51So there was that kind of stuff going on as like we've got to
- 10:54give ourselves some purpose into meeting here.
- 10:57Did you say the? The two mile girl was running
- 11:00the four by one. I got, I got into it with this
- 11:02when I was the assistant, I got into it with this coach and I
- 11:05was like, what are you doing? She's like, she needs to do this
- 11:08for the team. She needs this for the team.
- 11:11I was like, OK, well, would you have one of your 100 runners run
- 11:14the two mile for the team? Like come on.
- 11:17Like she was like trying to punish this girl or something
- 11:19like that, that kind of stuff. So it was like I said, it was,
- 11:22it was toxic. It was toxic.
- 11:24So like we got to change the narrative around track.
- 11:26First of all, like with the, with the, with these people,
- 11:29with these groups, you know, so, so then COVID almost became a
- 11:32reset because, you know, then come around to 2021, you know, I
- 11:37get a bunch of freshmen and, and really talented girls and you
- 11:40know, some of them had, who had lost their 8th grade year and
- 11:43we're like ready to get one back.
- 11:44And we're, we're, we're ready to work.
- 11:46So by the time we we were coming back into a a full season in
- 11:512021, we did have a positive culture and we were heading in
- 11:55the right direction. So what was the catalyst for
- 11:57that positive culture? And then, you know, what does,
- 12:00what does that look like? How do you, how are you getting
- 12:02things to work for you week to weekend?
- 12:04Yeah, so. Yeah.
- 12:06So, so, yeah. So then looking at the Nelson
- 12:08bolts and I'll, I'll start, I'll start trying to pull some stuff
- 12:10up here as well. Just looking at like some weekly
- 12:13things. Definitely.
- 12:17We had to keep it simple because I had had a lot of new, new
- 12:20kids, like kids that were new to track kids that didn't have like
- 12:23a track language or a track background or it wasn't a +1 or
- 12:28a productive 1, you know what I mean?
- 12:29Like they just didn't know like what it really was, especially,
- 12:34you know, on an event specific level.
- 12:37So it was like, you know, we've got to teach them these things
- 12:41in a in a simple way, you know, and you've just got to give them
- 12:44like language that they can understand.
- 12:47So here I'll, I don't do a whole lot with spreadsheets.
- 12:52I do with data, but when it comes to like programming, I
- 12:55just like make it look easy for me to read.
- 12:58So I just make my notes kind of like a presentation style.
- 13:02So I'm going to try to pull these up for you all right
- 13:08screen share here we go all right.
- 13:13Can we see that it? Is starting to shine.
- 13:17It is starting to shine all right.
- 13:19And if I need to zoom in on anything, you know, we can get a
- 13:23little a little more granular. So there's just, you know, I
- 13:27just make myself a little weak, you know, And so on the on the
- 13:31student side, like I'm not giving them, you know, a novel
- 13:36of like every single Rep, every single pace.
- 13:40And you know, we kind of deal with that day of, you know, I
- 13:43just give them the theme for the week for the day, you know, So
- 13:49it's kind of like a recipe each each, each day.
- 13:53We have a daily recipe, I would say.
- 13:55And then like in like here's here's here's what we have, you
- 13:57know, each week. And so we'll look at a daily
- 14:00recipe, but this would be like Monday we're going to come in
- 14:04and do an acceleration. Tuesday would be our lactate
- 14:09workout for that week, which is going to be, you know, something
- 14:13more intense, you know, like some repeat two hundreds.
- 14:17Wednesday, you know, we're going to be pretty toast for people
- 14:20that that don't need the day off.
- 14:22We're going to come in and try to do a little bit of light
- 14:25skill and technique work or we're going to be doing like
- 14:27recovery kind of stuff. When we're recovered, hopefully
- 14:32we're going to be ready to do some Max velocity on Thursday.
- 14:36Friday we're going to come in and do some meat prep and then
- 14:40Saturday we got to meet. So that's just what I'm going to
- 14:45send out to them, you know, on our on our GroupMe, how many
- 14:49that's that, that's what they're going to see on their side just
- 14:52so they have an idea of what to expect each and every day, where
- 14:55we're going to be, what time that kind of, you know, the
- 14:57basics. And I and I really don't
- 15:01typically give them much more than that.
- 15:04And then I always give myself some little like themes and, and
- 15:09quotes and stuff like things that I'm going to talk about and
- 15:12little, little quotes. I like to use that kind of like
- 15:14theme each day on the mental side of things.
- 15:19So then so then you know, so they each so this would be our
- 15:23recipe. And so basically every single
- 15:26day from like tomorrow will be our the start of our second week
- 15:30of pre season till the the state track meet.
- 15:35We are starting each practice the same exact way.
- 15:38We pretty much have a flow and a pattern.
- 15:41So like when I say it's simple, like it's, it's, it's, it's
- 15:46predictable. It is, is really what I like to
- 15:48think of it. Like they know what to expect.
- 15:52There's not a whole lot of mystery.
- 15:54If you've been showing up to practice from day one, you know,
- 15:58you know this stuff for you, you can do it in your sleep.
- 16:02This is this stuff becomes like second nature to you.
- 16:05It becomes ingrained. There's so much so that like I
- 16:08got to get on them and be like, hey, you're getting lazy.
- 16:10You're getting, you're going through the motions.
- 16:11You know, we got it tightened, tightened it up a little bit
- 16:14just because they get so, so used to it, you know, and, and,
- 16:17and I don't want it to become stale.
- 16:20So, you know, I might, I spice it up every once in a while, mix
- 16:23it up sometimes. But like I said, they, they,
- 16:27they definitely know what to expect day in and day out.
- 16:29We're going to start with our PR, We're going to start with
- 16:31torso activations. We're going to go into our speed
- 16:33drills, you know, from there, you know, we're going to do
- 16:36spring ankles from there. You know, it might, it might
- 16:39vary a little bit just based on the theme of the day, but
- 16:43there's definitely like a pattern and a rhythm to every
- 16:46kind of day. Like they know what to expect on
- 16:48a Max V day. They know what to expect on a,
- 16:52on a lactate workout day. There's not a lot of surprises,
- 16:56you know, and and like I said, I'm not necessarily telling
- 16:59them, you know, in the in the in the pre weeks sent like, hey,
- 17:03we're doing, you know, 40 yard dashes.
- 17:06You know, I'll I'll probably tell them that the day of, you
- 17:10know, and give give them the workout details.
- 17:13But as but as far as you know, what that workouts going to be,
- 17:16they're not going to be that nervous about what it is.
- 17:19They're not going to usually get surprised with any kind of like,
- 17:23Oh man, coaches got us doing 84 hundreds today or something
- 17:26crazy like that. Like they if if the Lactaid
- 17:28workouts coming, like I'm letting them know.
- 17:30Hey, guys, get ready tomorrow. We're, we're do we're doing, you
- 17:33know, 3-1 fifties, you know, no walk back, rest hard as you can,
- 17:38you know, and then, and then we're going to do some black
- 17:40tape retention stuff like then we're going to hit the weights.
- 17:43They they they know if if it if lactates on the schedule, they
- 17:47know what that means. So let me ask a question because
- 17:51we might have some people out here who may not be very
- 17:53familiar with the terminology. For.
- 17:57Sure. And and the system that you have
- 17:59in place, right. So maybe we take a sidestep here
- 18:02and take a about 120 to 180 seconds here, 2 to 3 minutes
- 18:07right, to breakdown this and simplicity for newer coaches,
- 18:14right, who might see this type of set up and go, oh, OK, what's
- 18:18an RPR zone? And well, what, what are spring?
- 18:21I'm not saying go through every drill because those are things
- 18:25we they can come into the track tribe and ask those questions
- 18:28and learn and we can do videos about that later.
- 18:30But what is the, the idea? What's the overall concept with
- 18:35your setup? Is it very, excuse me, is it
- 18:39varied warmups for different days or is it very similar with
- 18:43very slight variation? What is it that they're doing,
- 18:47you know, as you're kind of walking them through that warm
- 18:50up process to get prepared physically and then mentally?
- 18:53Yeah. So, you know, with the way, the
- 18:56way that we are, we kind of start our practice.
- 18:59We've, we've got kids, we've got kids rolling in at kind of
- 19:03different times based on like some, some after late school
- 19:06work things and in different schedules.
- 19:09So I, I want everybody to have something that they're, that
- 19:12they know how to do on their own.
- 19:15If, if they miss it, you know, like if, if the, if the team
- 19:18already did and I and I, and I was like, wasn't there for the
- 19:211st 5 minutes, you know what, that kind of thing, things that
- 19:24you, you can. So we teach them a lot of these
- 19:27things pre season early. Like I said, we're doing these
- 19:31things right now and we're really drilling them down so
- 19:34that when we get into the season, it's second nature.
- 19:38So the, the, the pattern would be like something that's
- 19:42something that's going to do an activation.
- 19:44So we're doing, we're doing the RPR zone, which so the focus is
- 19:47breathing. So you're always going to start
- 19:49with your breathing, you're going to get with your breath,
- 19:51no matter what it is that you're doing, whether we're at a
- 19:53practice or at a meet and no matter what the workout is that
- 19:56day, you're always doing something where we're we're,
- 19:59we're hitting that reset button on from, from what you just did
- 20:03to, to now we, we want practice to be the best part of your day.
- 20:08And but we want you focused and dialed in.
- 20:10So, you know, so that's what that that first portion there
- 20:14that we say we call activate and all of that is to kind of like
- 20:19get you out of school mode or work mode or whatever it is you
- 20:22were just doing. And now, now you're in practice
- 20:26mode. We want, we want that be that
- 20:27like positive shift. So it starts with the breathing.
- 20:31So that's kind of like just that signal and, and the RPR, which
- 20:33if anybody wants to learn about that, that's just the signal to
- 20:37the brain and the body that all right, we're, we're, we're doing
- 20:39the thing. Now it's, it's time to do the
- 20:41thing. And then you know, that, that
- 20:43torso activation, you know, just to, to, to very in a, in a very,
- 20:49what am I trying to say low impact way, you know, get, get
- 20:53the blood flow and, and the heart rate going.
- 20:55And then we, and then we do the spring ankle.
- 20:59That's something that we are, we're always doing because we're
- 21:01trying to address our, our, our foot and our lower, our lower
- 21:05leg and, and, and stiffness and strength in the, in those
- 21:08positions because that's something that we need.
- 21:10Whether we're a thrower, sprinter doesn't matter.
- 21:14So those, those are things that we set that up that way because
- 21:18that those are things we can do as a team.
- 21:21Those are things that we we find to be useful every single day,
- 21:24no matter what the theme is for that day, no matter what it is
- 21:26that we're doing. Those are things that we can do
- 21:29together. You know, the throws captain can
- 21:32lead his group, the the the sprints captain can lead their
- 21:35group, that type of thing. You know, that that's like our
- 21:38our beginning of practice. We are our circle of time, you
- 21:43know, because we don't, we don't do static stretching.
- 21:45We don't mess, right? Yeah.
- 21:46Yeah, nobody should be doing static stretching.
- 21:49We should know enough to not do static stretching.
- 21:52So if you're new and you're doing, you know, straddle
- 21:56stretches with your head trying to get to your toes and then
- 22:00staying there for 20 seconds, please stop.
- 22:02Yeah, please don't. Please talk to us.
- 22:04Come. See us?
- 22:06We, we've gotten away from that. That's the no.
- 22:08Judgment. No.
- 22:09Judgment. Right.
- 22:10Maybe quiet I'm. Going to be quietly like I'm
- 22:14definitely I'm bad. We'll be at practice like at the
- 22:18track and we'll be doing this stuff and I'll be like looking
- 22:20over at the softball team, like doing some static stretches.
- 22:23I'm like shaking my head. The like, coach, don't say it.
- 22:25Don't say it, coach. I'm like, I know, I know to be.
- 22:28Fair. That's where that's where we got
- 22:30to educate, right? And so they know.
- 22:33And they learn. They know.
- 22:34They know when they see it. If we roll up at a meeting, they
- 22:37see a team static stretching. They look at me and they're
- 22:38like, yeah, OK, yeah, we. Put that we even run out over
- 22:41there, right so and that's the educational piece, right?
- 22:44It's the other sports out there don't know right.
- 22:47And they they haven't caught up to what dynamic stretching is or
- 22:52dynamic mobility or dynamic warmups are at this point.
- 22:55And we have to educate baseball team.
- 22:58They they were warming up at high school and they they then
- 23:01they realize they hey, you guys look really loose and really
- 23:04fit. Dude, I can tell you right now
- 23:07our warm up is harder than a lot of teams practices.
- 23:10Yeah. Yes.
- 23:13And they will, they will tell you.
- 23:15And I've had some people do our warm up and they're like, matter
- 23:17of fact, we had a basketball coach.
- 23:19He, he just started coaching cross country with me this year.
- 23:21We started coaching together, I should say.
- 23:23And he went through the warm up and he, he, he came and
- 23:26whispered in my ear, 'cause I want to cuss you out right now
- 23:28because this warm up is so hard. And it was just a warm up.
- 23:31And the cross country kids are like, they're laughing and Joe,
- 23:33they're cracking up. And they're, they're because
- 23:35they're like, yeah, you see what we're going through right now?
- 23:37It takes us about 20 to 25 minutes to warm up on a big one
- 23:41anyway, because it gets kind of cold out here sometimes.
- 23:43But all that to say, if you're out there and you're still doing
- 23:46static stretches, please take off your tube socks, put away
- 23:49the 1980s gym shorts, and come to the future.
- 23:51OK, we. Got we got new stuff for you,
- 23:55Yeah. And it doesn't got to be
- 23:57complicated. No, no, it doesn't have to be
- 23:59complicated exactly. But to your point, right, you've
- 24:02got it all laid out. You've got a system here.
- 24:04Here's what everybody knows to do when you first step in the
- 24:06door. Here is what you do.
- 24:08We teach you, and then you do it right.
- 24:09We're not babysitting you. You have to be able to operate
- 24:12on your own. And now you're going from the
- 24:13reflexive. What is that reflexive something
- 24:18performance? Reset yeah, performance.
- 24:19Reset. I think I couldn't.
- 24:20I was like drawing a blank here, your performance reset here,
- 24:24reflection, performance reset. First of all, that's amazing
- 24:27because not a lot of coaches do that where it's hey, let's get
- 24:30let's get our breathing into rhythm.
- 24:31Let's check our, you know, different different parts of our
- 24:33body to make sure we're in the rhythm.
- 24:35Some people do the tapping right, You kind of calm down,
- 24:38but those are all different things.
- 24:39That's amazing. So if you don't know what the
- 24:41RPR zone is, y'all, that's something that you can take away
- 24:43from this and you've got several things that are dynamic that are
- 24:46leading you to your warm up. You split off into groups.
- 24:49And even if I would say even if they're not into the RPR, people
- 24:52think it's voodoo or whatever, people don't like it, you still
- 24:55got a hat. You have got to do something
- 24:58that sets that bridge between or that, that that reset button.
- 25:03Like I said, like, yeah, where you are, you, you, you got to
- 25:06have that mental reset. They got.
- 25:08They maybe they had a bad test that day, you know, or maybe
- 25:12their girlfriend cheated on him or who knows.
- 25:14Like you got, you got to have something that's going to put
- 25:18them in in practice mode because that that needs to be a positive
- 25:21reset. Even if practice is going to be
- 25:23hard, hard that day. Even even more importantly, if
- 25:26practice is going to be hard, like something in your warm up
- 25:30to start with, even if, like you always tell a joke, like who
- 25:34cares? I guess do something, do
- 25:35something where you're going to change the mood towards, Hey,
- 25:40it's time for practice. That they all know and get and
- 25:44feel it. And I like that different
- 25:46because it's physical. It's like you're getting out of
- 25:48your head and into your body that.
- 25:50Part and the real reality is that's sports psychology, right?
- 25:54But also you're training your body to get ready to perform.
- 26:00And I think that's key because what you do at practice is what
- 26:05shows up, not what you think about doing or not what you
- 26:07wanted to do, right? What you did actually is what
- 26:10shows up. So when you reset that mean we
- 26:14got kids like now with like high anxiety and ADHD and all these
- 26:17other acronyms, right ABC? Have hunched over their
- 26:20Chromebooks all day long. And say, hey, reset, come back
- 26:24outside, right, OK. Stand tall and breathe.
- 26:27That part I love it all right so we're we you got a whole system
- 26:31here this is what everybody does and it's.
- 26:33Exactly what we do. For a meet.
- 26:35So they, you know, like what we do in practice is we're going to
- 26:37meet. So, you know, when we were get
- 26:39off the bus. What we do in practice, you're
- 26:41doing the same thing. I don't care if it looks
- 26:42different. Yeah, get down on the ground and
- 26:44do the same thing. Exactly.
- 26:46Because you don't do anything. You start changing stuff up and
- 26:49then that next thing, yeah, you're thrown off, right.
- 26:50You throw off your routine. So what is it like, right?
- 26:54You, you, you, I see the system when they get to the warm ups
- 26:58and kind of split out. This is what you guys need to
- 27:00do. Now, you're already developing
- 27:03athletes from the middle school all the way up to the high
- 27:06school, right? What is it like to consistently
- 27:10develop durable athletes in that small school environment?
- 27:13So you won't find a kid that has had PE with me that doesn't know
- 27:19how to do like they might not know that it's called the Jeff
- 27:23Boley distance warm up, but they know the Jeff Boley distance
- 27:26form. Like they know the skips, they
- 27:28know the twist, they know it like they know the speed drills.
- 27:32They might not know if it's speed drill A or B, you know,
- 27:35like they might not know what they're called necessarily, but
- 27:38they've done them like twice a week in PE for eight years, you
- 27:44know, So and then and then if they're, you know, then they're
- 27:47if they do cross country with me as well, then they're, you know,
- 27:49they're hitting it even more. So we're definitely I'm trying
- 27:55to ingrain movement patterns into as many of these kids, even
- 27:59if I'm never going to coach them, like, man, I hope I'm
- 28:03helping the other sports or at least hoping I'm helping these
- 28:06kids have a quality of life. So I'm definitely trying to
- 28:09ingrain a lot of these movement patterns as early as I can, like
- 28:13kindergarten, like we're going to learn to skip, we're going to
- 28:15learn about, we're going to do this stuff, you know, I'll, I'll
- 28:18give it a fun or funny name. We'll call them cloud runs or
- 28:21something, you know, But I'm, I'm going to try to teach these
- 28:24movements to these kids as early as I possibly can.
- 28:28Hey gang, Mike Cunningham here. Hey, I hope you enjoyed this
