- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast.
- 0:17It's also an online course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:29Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:32Service, and Love.
- 0:34What is the get-to, have-to mix
- 0:37of your current work?
- 0:39This is a concept that was introduced to
- 0:41me by Kevin, my boss at the mortgage
- 0:44company.
- 0:45Pretty intuitive.
- 0:46There are some things that you get to
- 0:47do in your work, things that you look
- 0:49forward to doing, things that you enjoy.
- 0:51And then there are other things that you
- 0:52have to do in your work.
- 0:54Things that you might not prefer to do,
- 0:56but that need to get done.
- 0:58And it's a different mix and different jobs,
- 1:00right?
- 1:00Some jobs, maybe it's like 80-90%
- 1:03have-to.
- 1:04And then you've got a little bit of
- 1:0510% of get-to that you look
- 1:07forward to.
- 1:08Those jobs are really hard.
- 1:10On the flip side, maybe you have a
- 1:11dream job.
- 1:12But even in a dream job, you're probably
- 1:13going to have like 5-10% at
- 1:15least that's in that have-to category.
- 1:17Even if most of the time you're getting
- 1:18to do what you love, what you want
- 1:20to do.
- 1:21So just take a minute.
- 1:22What would the split be for you?
- 1:23Is it 70-30?
- 1:25Is it 90-10?
- 1:26Is it 50-50?
- 1:27In your current job, how much of your
- 1:30job do you get to do versus how
- 1:32much do you have to do?
- 1:35And as we look at this last part
- 1:37of the series, looking at how love can
- 1:39make our work meaningful, I want to kind
- 1:42of encourage you about the have-to parts
- 1:44of your job.
- 1:45Because if you're like me, the have-to
- 1:47stuff that you don't enjoy, it can be
- 1:49hard to find meaning in it, right?
- 1:50Like often the reason we don't enjoy it
- 1:52is because there's something that's less motivating about
- 1:55it.
- 1:55Maybe it's tedious or maybe it's repetitive.
- 1:58Maybe it's something that we don't think actually
- 2:01contributes to the mission of the workplace that
- 2:03much.
- 2:03There can be different reasons why it's hard
- 2:05to find meaning.
- 2:06But I think there is a way to
- 2:07find meaning in this kind of work, the
- 2:09have-to kind of work.
- 2:11And I want to go to a couple
- 2:13passages that talk about what happens when somebody
- 2:17else imposes something on you.
- 2:19What happens when somebody else doesn't respect your
- 2:23rights?
- 2:23And that might seem like a strange place
- 2:26to go, but then we'll come back around,
- 2:27and I think you'll see how it connects
- 2:29to this idea of allowing love to transform
- 2:33the have-to parts of your work.
- 2:35Okay, so our first passage comes from Jesus.
- 2:38This is in the Sermon on the Mount.
- 2:39We've looked at this before.
- 2:41I'm going to read chapter 5 of Matthew,
- 2:44starting in verse 38.
- 2:47You have heard that it was said, Eye
- 2:50for eye and tooth for tooth.
- 2:52But I tell you, do not resist an
- 2:53evil person.
- 2:55If anyone slaps you on the right cheek,
- 2:56turn to them the other cheek also.
- 2:58And if anyone wants to sue you and
- 3:00take your shirt, hand over your coat as
- 3:02well.
- 3:03If anyone forces you to go one mile,
- 3:05go with them two miles.
- 3:07Give to the one who asks of you,
- 3:08and do not turn away from the one
- 3:10who wants to borrow from you.
- 3:12You have heard that it was said, But
- 3:14I tell you, love your enemies, and pray
- 3:17for those who persecute you, that you may
- 3:19be children of your Father in heaven.
- 3:22This is a really rich teaching of Jesus.
- 3:25In our last episode on Maundy Thursday, we
- 3:28talked about how Jesus himself lived out, praying
- 3:31for those who were persecuting him when he
- 3:32was being crucified, praying, Father, forgive them.
- 3:35So we know that Jesus isn't asking us
- 3:37to do anything here that he hasn't done
- 3:39himself.
- 3:41Okay, but it's really interesting that the things
- 3:43that Jesus lays out, right before that teaching
- 3:45of love your enemies, as kind of examples
- 3:48of how to do that.
- 3:49So one is, if someone slaps you on
- 3:51the right cheek, turn to them the other
- 3:53also.
- 3:54Just some cultural context here.
- 3:56Slapping someone on the right cheek was like
- 3:59insulting them.
- 4:00This isn't talking about somebody actually trying to
- 4:02beat you up, but somebody who's like deeply,
- 4:03deeply insulting you.
- 4:05This would be similar maybe to somebody spitting
- 4:07in your face in our cultural context.
- 4:09So it's saying, if somebody insults you, don't
- 4:12insult them back.
- 4:14Right, that's one example when somebody insults you.
- 4:16Then there's another one, if anyone wants to
- 4:18sue you and take your shirt.
- 4:20Interesting, a lawsuit is an issue here.
- 4:22We'll actually look at a lawsuit context again
- 4:24in our next passage.
- 4:26So if somebody sues you, he says, don't
- 4:28just give them what they're asking for, give
- 4:30them something else too.
- 4:31So they want to sue you and take
- 4:32your shirt, probably unfairly.
- 4:35He's like, don't just give them the shirt,
- 4:37give them something else too.
- 4:37If anyone forces you to go one mile,
- 4:40go with them two miles.
- 4:41Now the cultural historical context here is that
- 4:44Roman soldiers who had authority in ancient Palestine
- 4:49where these Jewish listeners to Jesus would have
- 4:52been, they literally could do this.
- 4:53They could force civilians to help them carry
- 4:56stuff up to a full mile.
- 4:58So this is something that could literally happen.
- 5:01A Jew might be minding his own business,
- 5:03maybe working on his farm or running an
- 5:07errand, and a soldier could just stop him
- 5:09and say, you're going to help me carry
- 5:10this load for a mile.
- 5:13Imagine how disruptive that would be in your
- 5:14day if somebody could just disrupt you and
- 5:17commandeer you like that.
- 5:19And Jesus says, what should you do?
- 5:20He says, don't just go with them one
- 5:22mile, go with them two miles.
- 5:26This is totally counterintuitive.
- 5:28Jesus is saying, rather than insisting on your
- 5:30own rights, be generous.
- 5:33Give something back.
- 5:34Give your cloak as well as your shirt.
- 5:36Give the second mile as well as the
- 5:37first.
- 5:39And then he specifically talks about giving in
- 5:41the next example.
- 5:41He says, give to the one who asks
- 5:43you and do not turn away from the
- 5:45one who wants to borrow from you.
- 5:48Okay, so Jesus is giving us, I think,
- 5:51a way out from resentment here.
- 5:53What is resentment?
- 5:54We talked about this in a previous series.
- 5:56Resentment is the feeling you get when sacrifices
- 5:59are required of you rather than freely given.
- 6:02When it's like something is forced upon you.
- 6:05And that's exactly what Jesus is talking about.
- 6:07Somebody who's using the legal system to get
- 6:09the better of you through a lawsuit or
- 6:11somebody who has authority, like a Roman soldier,
- 6:14forcing you to do labor that you shouldn't
- 6:16have to do.
- 6:17Somebody who is asking you for a gift,
- 6:20even though they have no particular reason why
- 6:22you have to give it to them.
- 6:24Jesus is saying in all of these situations,
- 6:26rather than being constrained by resentment, saying, oh,
- 6:29I have to do this, you can choose
- 6:32to give.
- 6:33You can choose to even give more than
- 6:35what was required of you.
- 6:36So something that starts as a requirement or
- 6:39an obligation, Jesus is saying you have the
- 6:42freedom, you have the power as a human
- 6:44agent to turn that around and make it
- 6:47a gift.
- 6:48Right?
- 6:48That person maybe can force you to do
- 6:51something.
- 6:51Maybe they can.
- 6:51Maybe they've got the political power to force
- 6:54you to do something.
- 6:55You know what they can't do?
- 6:56They can't force you to hate them.
- 6:58They can't force you to feel resentful.
- 7:02They can't prevent you from choosing to be
- 7:05generous back to them.
- 7:07See, true deep freedom is actually the capacity
- 7:10to love regardless of what the other person
- 7:13is doing.
- 7:15Okay, so this is kind of the basic
- 7:17teaching of Jesus.
- 7:18I think this is probably in the back
- 7:20of Paul's mind in our next passage.
- 7:23So our next passage comes from 1 Corinthians
- 7:25chapter 6, and Paul is addressing an issue
- 7:29that has arisen in the Corinthian church related
- 7:31to lawsuits among believers.
- 7:33They're getting into conflicts with each other.
- 7:35They can't find anybody in the church to
- 7:37resolve it, so they go to the Gentile
- 7:38courts to have a lawsuit, just like, you
- 7:41know, we might go to a court, again,
- 7:43a civil court to try and resolve some
- 7:45sort of matter.
- 7:46So Paul's writing and he says, starting in
- 7:49verse 3, Do you not know that we
- 7:51will judge angels?
- 7:53How much more the things of this life!
- 7:57Therefore, if you have disputes about such matters,
- 7:59do you ask for a ruling from those
- 8:01whose way of life is scorned in the
- 8:03church?
- 8:04I say this to shame you.
- 8:05Is it possible that there is nobody among
- 8:07you wise enough to judge a dispute between
- 8:09believers, but instead one brother takes another to
- 8:12court, and this in front of unbelievers?
- 8:15The fact that you have lawsuits among you
- 8:18means you have been completely defeated already.
- 8:21Why not rather be wronged?
- 8:24Why not rather be cheated?
- 8:26Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and
- 8:29you do this to your brothers and sisters.
- 8:33Okay, a couple things there.
- 8:34One is this idea that we will judge
- 8:36angels.
- 8:37This is a part of the New Testament
- 8:38teaching that I think is sometimes neglected, that
- 8:41part of our future, those of us who
- 8:42are in Christ, is that we will have
- 8:45authority over the whole universe when Jesus returns.
- 8:50We'll be under Jesus, but we'll be exercising
- 8:52authority with him to judge the earth or
- 8:55to judge angels, like this passage says.
- 8:57We'll be exercising authority to determine how things
- 9:00go.
- 9:01And so that's actually part of your future
- 9:03in God, if you're in Christ, is to
- 9:06be a co-ruler of the universe.
- 9:09Big responsibility.
- 9:11And Paul's saying, look, if that's where we're
- 9:12eventually headed, we should be able to handle
- 9:15disagreements one another inside of the church now.
- 9:17Like, we shouldn't have to go outside the
- 9:19church to people that don't even share our
- 9:21convictions or our way of life and have
- 9:24them judge between us.
- 9:25Like, we should be qualified to do this.
- 9:27We should have enough discernment to figure these
- 9:29kind of conflicts out.
- 9:31And then he kind of gets to the
- 9:32heart of the matter, which is what's going
- 9:35on if believers are having a lawsuit with
- 9:37each other?
- 9:38Well, it means that opposing parties are both
- 9:40insisting on their rights, insisting on getting their
- 9:43way.
- 9:44And what he says in verses 7 and
- 9:468 is, that's the problem, right?
- 9:49The real problem is not just the discernment
- 9:51of who's in the right, but why are
- 9:53you, as a disciple of Jesus, even insisting
- 9:55on getting your way in the first place?
- 9:57He says, you've already been completely defeated already.
- 10:00Why not rather be wronged?
- 10:02Why not rather be cheated?
- 10:05These are really powerful questions.
- 10:07What he's saying is, suppose the other person
- 10:08is in the wrong and you are in
- 10:10the right.
- 10:10Wouldn't it be better to just, again, let
- 10:14them have what they want rather than dragging
- 10:16them into court?
- 10:18Couldn't you take this inopportunity and turn it
- 10:22into an opportunity to love?
- 10:25Couldn't you take this imposition and instead choose
- 10:28to be generous?
- 10:30That's what Jesus teaches us.
- 10:32Jesus teaches us that we can turn this
- 10:34around, that other people's behavior doesn't have to
- 10:36determine our behavior.
- 10:38They might be able to take something away
- 10:39from us, but they can't make us hate
- 10:41them.
- 10:42They can't make us resent them in our
- 10:44hearts.
- 10:45They can't take away our capacity to love
- 10:48them and to be generous to them no
- 10:50matter what they do to us.
- 10:52And so Paul is saying, this is the
- 10:54way we've got to think.
- 10:55Rather than always being ready to insist on
- 10:57our rights, how can we have a posture
- 10:59of generosity?
- 11:01This is super counterintuitive.
- 11:04Again, in our culture, especially in the United
- 11:06States, one of the most litigious nations in
- 11:08the history of the world, we love insisting
- 11:10on our rights.
- 11:11We love fighting for what's ours.
- 11:13And there can be a place for that,
- 11:14like if you're fighting for the right of
- 11:16a disenfranchised group of people, right?
- 11:19You know, like Rosa Parks, when she stood
- 11:21up and refused to sit in the segregated
- 11:24area of the bus, right?
- 11:25It was not like, oh, Rosa Parks wasn't
- 11:27being generous, like a follower of Jesus.
- 11:29No, no, no, no, no.
- 11:29Like she was fighting for the rights of
- 11:31a disenfranchised group of people.
- 11:32Different context, right?
- 11:33But this is talking about interpersonal conflict.
- 11:35Do we have that willingness to surrender what's
- 11:40ours, to not insist on getting our way?
- 11:44All right, let's bring this teaching from Jesus
- 11:46and then echoed by Paul back to the
- 11:48question of the have-to stuff at work.
- 11:51What is the have-to stuff that you
- 11:52have to do?
- 11:54For me, I think of nurses, where they
- 11:56want to spend time caring for patients, but
- 11:58they've got to do all of this onerous
- 11:59paperwork.
- 12:00Paperwork can be a burden in a lot
- 12:02of different jobs.
- 12:02Small business owners face a ton of paperwork,
- 12:04social workers, teachers, now with the IEPs and
- 12:08individualization plans and other things.
- 12:12Or I think about folks in ministry who
- 12:13love doing, say, evangelism and discipleship, but then
- 12:16they've also got to spend a bunch of
- 12:17time fundraising, and maybe that's something that's particularly
- 12:20challenging for them.
- 12:21Or I think about teachers, maybe at the
- 12:24college level, professors.
- 12:25They love teaching, they love research, but then
- 12:26they keep having to give time to administrative
- 12:28duties because somebody's got to be the dean
- 12:30of the department.
- 12:32Or maybe it's somebody who loves building systems
- 12:35behind the scenes, but then they keep getting
- 12:37pushed into interpersonal communication.
- 12:39I have a friend like this.
- 12:40She's a great structural person, but then somebody
- 12:44left the team who was doing some of
- 12:45the phone work, so until they hired a
- 12:47new person, she had to step in and
- 12:49do the phone work, and that's not her
- 12:50thing.
- 12:51She's like, please get me off the phones.
- 12:52I do not want to do this.
- 12:55That was a have-to for them.
- 12:56What is the have-to for you?
- 12:58Okay, the question is, are we going to
- 13:00let ourselves become resentful because these are things
- 13:04we dislike doing?
- 13:05These are things that we have to do
- 13:06rather than we get to do.
- 13:08Again, even if it's unfair in some way,
- 13:12maybe the paperwork is forced on us by
- 13:14our boss, or maybe the boss has been
- 13:16inequitable in the workload distribution, so you're stuck
- 13:20with more work than you should have.
- 13:22Maybe there's some other reason that this really
- 13:24isn't great.
- 13:25Again, even if you're in the right, even
- 13:28if you have been wronged, that doesn't take
- 13:30away the opportunity to turn it around and
- 13:34make it generosity, make it love.
- 13:38That's what Jesus is inviting us into.
- 13:40No matter how onerous the situation is, you
- 13:43still have freedom to say, I'm going to
- 13:45take this obligation.
- 13:46I'm going to take this requirement.
- 13:48I'm going to take this have-to, and
- 13:49I'm going to turn it around, and I'm
- 13:51going to love.
- 13:52I'm going to make it a gift.
- 13:54I'm going to go the extra mile.
- 13:57Now, one caveat here is, kind of like
- 14:01with Rosa Parks, there are situations where it
- 14:04does make sense to push back against something
- 14:07that's unfair, right?
- 14:09Both maybe for the sake of other disenfranchised
- 14:11people, and sometimes for your own sake, too.
- 14:13I don't think that this teaching prevents us
- 14:15from setting boundaries, for example, asserting ourselves.
- 14:19We've looked in other episodes at how, for
- 14:21example, the Apostle Paul was very assertive about
- 14:23his rights sometimes in clever and kingdom-minded
- 14:26ways.
- 14:28So this raises a significant question.
- 14:31What's the right thing to do?
- 14:32If I'm discerning, if I'm facing a have
- 14:35-to and it feels unfair, is it a
- 14:37situation where I should set a boundary with
- 14:39my boss, or is it a situation where
- 14:41I should turn it around and go the
- 14:42second mile and make it an act of
- 14:44love?
- 14:45Well, what I want to encourage you is
- 14:47that it's like those actually aren't contradictory.
- 14:48You can assert yourself and advocate for yourself
- 14:51and for others in order to try and
- 14:53get things to be more fair, more equitable,
- 14:55to work for change, whatever that might be
- 14:58in your workplace.
- 14:58And in the meantime, you can also cheerfully
- 15:02and generously give that second mile, right?
- 15:06You can work for change and you can
- 15:08give the thing that isn't even required of
- 15:10you.
- 15:11So there's not a contradiction there.
- 15:13The key thing is in your heart, are
- 15:17you letting your heart be gnawed at by
- 15:18resentment, or are you finding that capacity, like
- 15:22Jesus, to forgive the other person for the
- 15:25way that they're wronging you and then to
- 15:26give anyways?
- 15:28There's a deep freedom there when you turn
- 15:30the obligation into a gift.
- 15:32It's not incompatible with advocacy, with working towards
- 15:35justice, but it's about interior freedom.
- 15:38It means no matter how I'm treated, no
- 15:40matter what I have to do at work,
- 15:41I can always choose to be generous.
- 15:44I can always choose to love.
- 15:47So as you think about your get-to,
- 15:50have-to mix this week at work and
- 15:52you hit one of those have-to moments,
- 15:54just welcome the Holy Spirit and ask, Holy
- 15:57Spirit, how can I turn this around and
- 15:59make it a gift of love?
- 16:01The Lord will show you how and you'll
- 16:03experience deep freedom.
- 16:07Lord Jesus, thank you that you lead us
- 16:08into the way of freedom, that no one
- 16:11can take away the capacity you give us
- 16:14by your Spirit to love, that we can
- 16:17love even our enemies like you did, Lord
- 16:20Jesus.
- 16:21We pray that you would strengthen us in
- 16:23our discernment to know when to advocate for
- 16:25ourselves and others, and while we're doing that,
- 16:28to be free from resentment, to love with
- 16:31generosity, to turn things around.
- 16:34Thank you that you've turned things around for
- 16:35us.
- 16:36Do your work in us as we do
- 16:38our work with you.
- 16:44Thanks for listening.
