- 0:37Welcome to drive through episode number three.
- 0:40This is our monthly recap, where we put together a main view of automotive.
- 0:44Motorsport and random car.
- 0:46I see the L he showed up.
- 0:51This episode is probably going to be recorded on some sort of
- 0:54recycled digital media, right?
- 0:56It is Earth Day after all.
- 0:57Earth Day is April 22nd.
- 0:59It's Earth Day.
- 1:00E R F.
- 1:02Well, I mean, it's 420, so maybe we should all have green backgrounds.
- 1:06Earth.
- 1:08That's why it's E R F earth.
- 1:11It's herb day.
- 1:12It's oh, there we go.
- 1:13It's herb day.
- 1:14I like it.
- 1:15Tanya is in a really good mood.
- 1:17420 at the time of this recording, this month's drive through.
- 1:22For the first time in three, three episodes, we are going to focus
- 1:28on Earth Day, Green Initiatives, EVs and Concepts and the like.
- 1:33Well, before we start, I want to apologize to Mark Hewitt.
- 1:37I don't know for what yet, but I'm going to go ahead and apologize to him now.
- 1:41This is going to turn into the Jimmy Kimmel saying, we're sorry, Matt Damon.
- 1:44We don't have enough time for you today.
- 1:46We'll, we'll get you next week.
- 1:47I apologize, Mark Hewitt, for whatever I do this month that I shouldn't have.
- 1:51So.
- 1:51There you go, but thanks for listening.
- 1:53Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:54Thanks for listening.
- 1:55We appreciate your support.
- 1:55Previous months.
- 1:56I kept talking about an event that was coming up at Watkins
- 1:59Glenn called the green Grand Prix.
- 2:02Maybe it just flew by your desk.
- 2:03Maybe you stopped and listened to the pre release episode that we put out.
- 2:07What exactly is the green Grand Prix?
- 2:09It's been going on for 19 years now, sponsored by Toyota.
- 2:13It used to be in the old days, they would do a time distance
- 2:16rally around Lake Seneca.
- 2:18It was about 80 miles around the lake.
- 2:21It's evolved over the years.
- 2:22It's held at Watkins Glen International, and it's basically 80 miles of the track,
- 2:28which comes out to roughly 26 laps of the track over about a 90 minute period.
- 2:34And what was the point of the event?
- 2:35So it's a memorial event for Doris Bovee.
- 2:39And basically she was an environmentalist very much about, you know, the
- 2:43green initiative, all this kind of stuff, even going back 20 years.
- 2:46And so this event is in honor of her.
- 2:48It's a time distance rally.
- 2:50It really kicked off in the early days of the Prius to help showcase
- 2:54the early hybrids and stuff like that.
- 2:56And so they've continued to perpetuate the event, grow the event.
- 2:59It's actually become a STEM event as well.
- 3:02So a lot of the participants are from surrounding colleges and universities.
- 3:06They invited 1200 people to this event, which was pretty cool.
- 3:10The whole point of the thing was to do the 80 laps in a certain amount of time.
- 3:16And.
- 3:19I was invited to not only participate in the event, but cover the event from
- 3:24different perspectives, being part of the media team that was there, we live
- 3:29streamed multiple portions of the day.
- 3:31I didn't really know what to expect, right?
- 3:33I've done some other rallies and gym kind of like things in the
- 3:36past, but I've never done a TSD.
- 3:38I was very fortunate to go into this event with my family.
- 3:42Quote unquote alternative fuel vehicle, which by their definition
- 3:46was alternative to gasoline.
- 3:47So diesel does qualify for that.
- 3:49And in full disclosure, they had to kind of like hem and
- 3:53haw about it and get approval.
- 3:55And then finally they go, okay, cool.
- 3:56I'm out there in my, you know, 5, 000 pound Jeep diesel and, you
- 4:00know, live streaming from the truck and all this kind of stuff, you
- 4:03know, I wasn't expecting anything.
- 4:05I kind of had an idea of what it might do, but I really wasn't expecting
- 4:09the day to play out the way it did.
- 4:12Time distance rally by yourself with no navigator is more challenging
- 4:16than I thought it would be, you know, kind of talking to some of
- 4:18the folks that won overall and kind of looking at the scores and stuff.
- 4:22And I was like, well, how did you guys do it?
- 4:23And they're like, Oh, well, we're calculating as we're going along, how
- 4:27quickly we should be going down the straightaway and, you know, how much
- 4:30speed we can scrub off and all this kind of stuff to really maintain that
- 4:33average lap speed around the track.
- 4:36And so I was sort of going at it.
- 4:38Too much of face value like, all right, I'm just going to set the cruise
- 4:40control and we'll do what we can do.
- 4:42But in reality, the more I looked at it, my lap times were consistent.
- 4:46I don't know.
- 4:47I wasn't really hitting the, maybe the number that I was supposed to be hitting.
- 4:50My lap should have been slower.
- 4:51I noticed that some of the folks that during the award ceremony had won.
- 4:56I had passed those cars.
- 4:57I was like, man, they're going really slow.
- 4:59So you had a target mile per hour that you had to be 46
- 5:03miles per hour was your target.
- 5:04Correct.
- 5:05It's the average lap speed.
- 5:08Even though I was talking to the live stream, I was sort
- 5:10of kind of thinking about it.
- 5:11They gave you a window.
- 5:12You weren't supposed to go slower than 35 or faster than 55.
- 5:17And so somewhere in that window.
- 5:19You can achieve an average lap speed of 46, which is the
- 5:24number they said was the target.
- 5:26And my aim solo was actually showing me the ranges of my upper and lower
- 5:31miles per hour, which was pretty cool.
- 5:33And I was falling in that range.
- 5:35Except when I did 70 to get around the Mustang.
- 5:38But you know, the race is over.
- 5:39I can say that now.
- 5:41I've driven around Watkins Glen several times.
- 5:43You go into some of those turns a lot faster than 46 miles an hour.
- 5:48So why not just set the cruise at 46 miles an hour and let the vehicle
- 5:53just take you around the track?
- 5:55So that was my initial goal.
- 5:57And I thought that was going to be the plan for the Jeep.
- 6:00Just lock it in at 46 and call it a day.
- 6:03The problem is with the cruise control, when you started to go
- 6:06downhill, it would put on the brakes.
- 6:09So rather than do that, what I would let it do is I would kill the cruise control.
- 6:12I would let it speed up a little bit and then I would trail break in
- 6:16like, especially like turn six, just.
- 6:18Ease the brakes into nose it in to allow it to come through, but
- 6:22like turn nine, it's a slow turn.
- 6:25It's tight.
- 6:25I wasn't confident with the cheap, although I did push it through there
- 6:28a little faster towards the end.
- 6:30Cause I wanted to see under acceleration with the all wheel
- 6:33drive, it'll pull through.
- 6:34It's not a problem.
- 6:35So I was a little nervous, right?
- 6:36I didn't want.
- 6:37To really upset the vehicle so much, yes, I could have gone faster, but
- 6:41I think the lap conditions when you're racing are different because
- 6:45you're planning your breaking zones.
- 6:47You're not just trying to do the BMW school thing where you
- 6:49throw it in with no brakes.
- 6:51So there's a little level of apprehension that you have
- 6:54to overcome when you do that, especially in a 5, 000 pound vehicle.
- 6:57It's not the same as in a GTI where you could, yeah, just turn
- 7:00the wheel and who cares, you know?
- 7:02Yeah, I would have been curious how my TDI would have done because its cruise control
- 7:06is very tight where some cars you go down a hill and suddenly you're like, I'm doing
- 7:1110 miles an hour faster because like, it's got such a ban before it like catches
- 7:15itself and comes back to set point.
- 7:17I see very little movement in my cruise control, whether it's going up a hill
- 7:21or down a hill, it reacts very quickly.
- 7:23I'd be curious to see how it would do.
- 7:25And apparently my car would be not eligible because I don't have stock tires.
- 7:30Well, that should be easy to overcome.
- 7:32We can find a stock set of wheels and tires around.
- 7:34Well, you're running a 225.
- 7:3640, 17.
- 7:37That's a stock size.
- 7:38The stock that came on the car.
- 7:40Oh, he came with 15.
- 7:42No, no, no, no, no.
- 7:43Hold on.
- 7:44It is a OE size for a Mark four golf period full stop
- 7:49because SCCA is weird like that.
- 7:51If you go to them and say, this is the stock available OE size.
- 7:55Oh, if that's the rule, I interpreted the rule.
- 7:57Meaning if you bought that car.
- 7:59It came with like 185s or something.
- 8:03That's the leeway that they give you in the SEC rule book.
- 8:07So that is an manufacturer size that is legal on that car.
- 8:12Well, then I could have been there and I would have gotten
- 8:13first place for diesel category.
- 8:15Yeah, there you go.
- 8:15And you just answered another one of my questions.
- 8:17Who put this event on?
- 8:18So it was SCCA?
- 8:20Correct.
- 8:20It's an SCCA event.
- 8:21Now, you said your alternative fuel vehicles, but there were
- 8:25911s and Mustangs and stuff there.
- 8:28So really, if you just want to go and drive Watkins Glen, sign up for the event.
- 8:33Yeah.
- 8:33A hundred percent, a hundred percent.
- 8:34But I believe if you have a non petrol car that isn't a diesel, or so if
- 8:39you have a gas car, I think you're kind of moved down the priority list.
- 8:43Like they hold you.
- 8:44And if there's open slots and then you can get in, they give priority to
- 8:47the alternative fuel vehicles first.
- 8:49I mean, that makes sense.
- 8:50It is.
- 8:51After all a green green Grand Prix.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53Yeah.
- 8:53I thought all the cars were supposed to be green.
- 8:55I guess I was wrong.
- 8:56I was shocked too.
- 8:57I mean, you see an El Camino and you're like, well, that's
- 8:58about as not green as we can get.
- 9:01It was interesting.
- 9:02It was really kind of nerve wracking at some points where you're like,
- 9:05Oh, you know, how much speed can I carry through this corner?
- 9:08This guy does.
- 9:09Dive bombing on top of me, stuff like that.
- 9:11I will say the pit stop was just, thankfully, Tanya was back in the
- 9:18studio and she's texting me going, Oh, you know that you have this much
- 9:20time left, you have this much time.
- 9:22And I'm like, cause I didn't even pay attention to when I rolled
- 9:24into the pit, but it was like four minutes of absolute torture because
- 9:28I'm like, do I turn the vehicle off?
- 9:30Do I let it run?
- 9:32And I'm just watching my MPG calculation just fall and fall and fall.
- 9:37And I'm like, well, what was the point?
- 9:39Of the pit stop, you know, I don't know if that goes back to something that is
- 9:44part of the original time distance rally.
- 9:46It didn't make sense to me.
- 9:47I'm like, why do we have to stop for four minutes?
- 9:49But I think it allows them to change drivers.
- 9:52The thing I was confused about, because there were some teams that had three
- 9:55drivers and four drivers, and I saw people like pitting in and then leaving.
- 9:59Cause like the Mustang did that.
- 10:01Cause there were three drivers.
- 10:02Is it a cumulative four minutes or is it four minutes in one shot?
- 10:05Again, the rules were a little unclear and I wanted to ask these questions
- 10:10at the driver's meeting, but I felt like if I asked these questions,
- 10:13I'm going to look like that guy.
- 10:15I'm going to be that noob.
- 10:17And I didn't want to be that guy.
- 10:18You know, you got to get over that sometimes, right?
- 10:20I think going into next year, I'm going to have more questions that
- 10:24I want answered before the event.
- 10:26I think you took a longer pit stop too.
- 10:27Cause After you got into the pits and you read the rules about the pits, the
- 10:31timing should have started apparently when you cross the line into the pit.
- 10:35I didn't start counting you until you stopped in your pit box and
- 10:40then the counter should have ended like as you pitted out.
- 10:42So you took like an extra solid extra minute or more.
- 10:46Yeah, I was going to say, does it count from pit in to pit out?
- 10:48Four minutes or is it?
- 10:50Four minutes at your stall.
- 10:51As long as it's four minutes, you can go more apparently.
- 10:55But what they do is in the timing, cause they use the same
- 10:57transponders we use in time trials.
- 10:59They just delete the laps before, during, and after, I think they said.
- 11:03So they take those away.
- 11:04So they don't even count.
- 11:05We were able to claw back from that, which was good.
- 11:08Honestly, I'm still really proud of my Jeep for being
- 11:10almost 10 years old and getting.
- 11:12As we recorded live stream 31.
- 11:159 miles to the gallon.
- 11:17I think that's pretty good.
- 11:18What tune was it?
- 11:20It was the GDE tune.
- 11:22Okay.
- 11:22It was tough.
- 11:23It was challenging.
- 11:24And there's a lot of things going on.
- 11:25And obviously multiple cameras in the car and talking to you guys
- 11:28and everything that was happening.
- 11:30It was interesting.
- 11:30And I think with two people, maybe you could do the rough
- 11:33math as you're going along.
- 11:35But I don't know.
- 11:36It's weird.
- 11:37Like a four and a half minute lap.
- 11:39Flew by, but also felt like an eternity.
- 11:42Once we got done with the TSD part of the event, we moved to the conference
- 11:47center where there was a talk by folks from Toyota, from BAE systems,
- 11:52from the TCAT service, which is like the bus service or whatever, and
- 11:56they were actually showcasing and they, you could go for joy rides.
- 11:59On these electric full size, you know, like bolt buses or whatever around the
- 12:04track, which a couple of people said it was kind of sketch going through like
- 12:07the boot with the big massive, like Greyhound, you know, it's pretty cool.
- 12:11They're silent, they're quick, they're super torquey.
- 12:13And so they had a whole discussion about that and the future of EVs, but
- 12:17it was all with respect to those big buses and the technology that BAE and
- 12:21Toyota and all them were working on.
- 12:23And then the later part of the day was an autocross, which I want
- 12:27to dive into a little bit more.
- 12:28I know Tanya was watching the live stream and we were chatting back
- 12:31and forth through the live stream about like the times and stuff.
- 12:33And it was really interesting to see the hybrids versus like the gas cars
- 12:37that were there and stuff like that.
- 12:39It's a full day event, award ceremony dinner.
- 12:42It's the part that got a little kind of confusing.
- 12:44There's different classes.
- 12:45Like they, they subdivided the results by like generation of Prius.
- 12:50And insight and stuff like that.
- 12:52And then there was like, okay, gas cars, which confused me.
- 12:55Cause as I walked around the paddock, I'm like, that's a saline Mustang.
- 12:58That's an El Camino.
- 12:59There's a couple of Miatas over there.
- 13:01I was like, what does that have to do with anything?
- 13:03Granted, you know, you got extra spots to fill.
- 13:05You'll sell them to people.
- 13:06Right?
- 13:06Sure.
- 13:06Fine.
- 13:07And I don't take any satisfaction in coming home with a trophy.
- 13:10First place, you know, I did hang it on my wall in the garage
- 13:13because the Jeep won something.
- 13:14I'm proud of the Jeep, but yeah, it was the only diesel there.
- 13:18Right.
- 13:18I mean, so I was kind of competing against myself.
- 13:20You know, how did they score that?
- 13:22It was weird because the gas calculations were easy.
- 13:26You know, how many gallons of fuel did you burn over 80 miles?
- 13:29You know, during the time period and all this kinda stuff and they could just
- 13:32do a rough calculation, the EMPG for the hybrids and the EV calculations.
- 13:37Like I got a little bit lost 'cause they were all cheering about like
- 13:410.2 kilowatt mile and I'm like, I don't know what that means.
- 13:45Like you gotta transl it for me.
- 13:46'cause the part that was crazy was when you're hearing about these
- 13:49guys at the Prius and they're like 112 miles to the gallon.
- 13:53And I'm like, what?
- 13:54How?
- 13:55There's no way you went around 80 miles.
- 13:57Without burning any fuel, there's almost not enough of Watkins Glenn
- 14:02to use regenerative braking, or maybe there is, maybe I don't understand
- 14:08how the Prius makes its electricity.
- 14:10That part was a little sketchy.
- 14:12I didn't get to really see how they scored everything, but I felt like IMSA
- 14:17racing, it was like, there's 16 different classes of cars out here right now.
- 14:21And we're really not competing against each other other than the fact
- 14:25that we're running the same format.
- 14:26The Prius would have been running on the gas engine the entire time.
- 14:29Is what I was thinking.
- 14:30According to the interwebs, most Toyota Priuses will switch to gas when the
- 14:34car reaches speeds of 15 miles an hour.
- 14:37And the average speed you were supposed to be somewhere.
- 14:3946 miles an hour is what they said.
- 14:41Yeah.
- 14:42Okay.
- 14:4246.
- 14:43Okay.
- 14:43The gas engine was on then.
- 14:44A hundred percent.
- 14:45I don't know how they calculated this, right?
- 14:47And when I heard the numbers, I was like baffled.
- 14:50What?
- 14:51How?
- 14:52How did you do that?
- 14:53Because I was sort of thinking, okay, a Prius, probably in line with say
- 14:59a VW TDI, they should be getting 45 miles to the gallon, kind of almost
- 15:04regardless of the conditions, right?
- 15:06They're just sort of that type of vehicle.
- 15:07But 112, I was just like, what?
- 15:10How?
- 15:11Were you hypermiling?
- 15:12And even the guy who had the 911, and I'm not trying to call them
- 15:15out because they sure as heck did during the award ceremony.
- 15:18I mean, they were giving him grief, but stock 911 4S with the all wheel drive
- 15:23and he's getting 40 miles to the gallon.
- 15:25I was like, what?
- 15:25Did he pop it in neutral and like just coast?
- 15:28How?
- 15:29Again, according to the interwebs, a Prius is probably, let's just call it
- 15:32somewhere around 50 miles to the gallon.
- 15:33How do you double that?
- 15:34Are you turning the car off?
- 15:36Are you coasting?
- 15:37I mean, they didn't say you couldn't hypermile.
- 15:39I personally don't have the patience for that.
- 15:41I would say on a racetrack, it's sort of nerve wracking to, you know,
- 15:44like, I'm just going to let it coast.
- 15:46How are you hypermiling up 600 horsepower hill?
- 15:49That's what I was wondering, right?
- 15:50With all the pre I and the insights.
- 15:52It's like a suit.
- 15:53I mean, I had torque for days.
- 15:55I could just tip into the throttle and it just climbed the hill with no problem.
- 15:58But you're in a what?
- 15:591.
- 16:002 liter Prius.
- 16:01Might as well be going backwards, trying to get up that hill.
- 16:04Cause there's also the hill up the S's that you have to climb.
- 16:06From turn two to the bus stop is a long haul.
- 16:09I guess you could coast from the bus stop all the way to the hill.
- 16:13But then you're accelerating the rest of the way all the way
- 16:17around basically to like pit.
- 16:21Yeah.
- 16:21Cause it's all straight.
- 16:23And then you could coast till you get to the S's.
- 16:25There was a top gear skid where Jeremy Clarkson took an E46 M3 and drove it
- 16:31around the top of your test track.
- 16:32Got better mile per gallon than a Toyota Prius that he was following.
- 16:36Yeah.
- 16:37He drove the Prius first, I guess, to get a target lap time.
- 16:40And then he drove the M3 and at that same speed, the M3 was more economical.
- 16:44Was there any type of hooliganism or shenanigans there at this event,
- 16:49kind of around something like that?
- 16:51I mean, you say there were Mustangs there, and No, because the Prius
- 16:54got 112 miles to the gallon.
- 16:56It's a showcase for a Prius event I call COLLUSION!
- 16:59Drafting's not allowed.
- 17:01There's a lot of things you're not supposed to do.
- 17:03They stagger start it like a proper rally, so everybody is sent off.
- 17:0710, 15 seconds apart or whatever, but you end up catching people.
- 17:11I mean, it just happens, right?
- 17:12Especially I was one of the only people as I was going through traffic that was
- 17:17actually driving the race line, trying to hit all the apexes to maintain as
- 17:21much speed as I could, stuff like that.
- 17:23And I'm not trying to boast.
- 17:24It's just, I was sort of like perplexed by where people were putting the car.
- 17:28That was the problem.
- 17:29You drove more than you needed to.
- 17:32Maybe that's it.
- 17:33I should have shortened the track up.
- 17:35I figured to maintain that average lap speed, I was really
- 17:38targeting a four minute, 25 lap.
- 17:41I was looking at lap times and I was like, once I set my base lap based on
- 17:45what I thought was good, I could keep being in that range for 24 or four 25,
- 17:50four 23 and kind of float around in there.
- 17:53And I was like, I felt that was good.
- 17:54That was consistent.
- 17:55Because what I was hoping for was better than 32 miles to the
- 17:58gallon, because I know the Jeep.
- 18:00Can already do 32 miles to the gallon so tough.
- 18:03It was challenging.
- 18:04Right?
- 18:04But yes, I was looking at people's I'm going to call them lines.
- 18:07And I'm like, where are you driving the other 1 that was kind of interesting.
- 18:11And we joked about it during the autocross and I have pictures
- 18:14of it up on our website.
- 18:15It's the converted all electric geo Metro, and apparently like that
- 18:20blew all the EVs out of the water.
- 18:23It got like 12.
- 18:245 kilowatt per mile or whatever the heck the conversion is, you know, a billion
- 18:30times better than the Chevy Bolt that ended up winning the EV class because
- 18:35that's considered like a super modified.
- 18:37It was in its own class, but the numbers were just like, okay, we have 0.
- 18:422.
- 18:43And then we had 12.
- 18:445 and to me, I'm like, that's like, I'm assuming the geometrify
- 18:49ways have as much as a bolt.
- 18:51Yeah.
- 18:51I was going to say the weight difference.
- 18:53Oh, yeah.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:54But as we saw during the autocross is still understeered like crazy, which was.
- 18:57Pretty bizarre considering it had no weight up front.
- 19:00It had no brakes.
- 19:00That's how they saved weight.
- 19:01They didn't put brakes in it.
- 19:03They just had wood up there.
- 19:05Did they have those little teeny skinny tires too?
- 19:07Yeah, they had everything and they blocked off the front to
- 19:10try to make it more aerodynamic.
- 19:11It was totally homebrew.
- 19:12They blocked it off using like duct tape and cardboard and it was
- 19:15just like, all right, whatever.
- 19:17It was comical, but the car was quick.
- 19:19My real question is where in the standings did the Eagle Eye Hammer Thrust And, uh, I
- 19:24think I beat the Eagle Eye Hammer Thrust.
- 19:26So we're all good there.
- 19:27Just really quick about the autocross.
- 19:29The young guys that were there from the colleges are like, Oh, the
- 19:32Miata is going to crush everybody.
- 19:35You know, and I'm like, no, that formula SAE car over there is definitely going
- 19:38to crush everybody by like a mile.
- 19:40So it did, it did their little autocross course in like 20 seconds flat.
- 19:44It was like, all right, cool.
- 19:44Let's take the outlier out of the equation.
- 19:46But the top five was modified Miata with a turbo, not a Mazda speed Miata.
- 19:52Then it was the 911 that I talked about, a GTI Mark 7 with an APR kit on it.
- 19:58And then there was a couple other cars that were in that area.
- 20:02And they were all right around 22 to 23 second times.
- 20:05And what was funny is when they talked about their fastest times,
- 20:09I was like, that's not what I reported on the live stream.
- 20:12It was a little weird when we got to the award ceremony, either way, it
- 20:15was interesting to see how tight the Porsche, the Miata and the GTI were,
- 20:19and they looked so different when they were out there on the autocross.
- 20:23But what really shocked me were these supposedly stock.
- 20:27Chevy volts, those things were quick right there with those other cars
- 20:33that I mentioned, like within a second, especially that green and
- 20:36blue one, the Alfred state car, I don't know who was driving it.
- 20:39If it was the teacher, 1 of the students, because, you know, there
- 20:41were so many drivers in the same car, it got a little confusing.
- 20:44You're doing like a 22 second lap and I'm like, dang, that is
- 20:48ballistically quick for a Chevy volt.
- 20:50That's.
- 20:51I'm going to put air quotes around it, stock.
- 20:53So I was actually really impressed.
- 20:55I was looking at how the Volt handled.
- 20:57It has the typical front wheel drive lift throttle oversteer because they
- 21:00were getting it to rotate and stuff, but it was pretty well planted.
- 21:04I mean, yeah, they could get it to push, but not as much as like the
- 21:07Bolt, where they basically flung that car and pushed it through every turn
- 21:12and it was just screaming for mercy.
- 21:14Just like the Priuses were, it was like, man, that hurts me to watch that
- 21:18car because, you know, skinny five inch tires, and they're just like rolling
- 21:22over on themselves, but they managed to make it work the autocross lots, a little
- 21:26small, if anybody's ever been to Watkins Glen and especially to a lot of the
- 21:30HOD events we go to, if you're familiar with the big garages and where we pit.
- 21:35Out to go on to the hot pit, they use the little lot right there next to
- 21:40the garages in that area where there's like, there's medians and there's a
- 21:43couple of trees and guys will camp out there and put their trailers and stuff.
- 21:47So it wasn't super huge.
- 21:49I was expecting them to use the other paddock that world challenge
- 21:52uses because it's much larger and like a proper autocross.
- 21:55But apparently that was closed off because it was opening weekend is what it is.
- 22:00I think overall I had fun.
- 22:02I think I need a redo.
- 22:03I need a mulligan.
- 22:04I want to try it again.
- 22:05And I think it would be cool to go back with Tanya's TDI and see what that does,
- 22:08you know, next year compared to the Jeep.
- 22:10It was a neat experience.
- 22:12I would recommend people going and checking it out.
- 22:14If you ever wanted to.
- 22:16See what your alternative fuel vehicle does in an event like this, sign up
- 22:20for next year's green ground, pre keep an eye on what they're doing again,
- 22:23very low key tech, wasn't anything that you really had to be worried about.
- 22:27You know, you had working turn signals and headlights and stuff like that.
- 22:31So it wasn't like proper track day or an autocross where they
- 22:34got to check a million things.
- 22:35And by the way, there was no helmets, so you don't have to worry about
- 22:38that, you know, windows up, the whole thing, you know, all that you
- 22:41want to run with the air condition.
- 22:42It's not like a track day, because again, the speeds are much slower.
- 22:45And I will say there was only one flagger the entire time.
- 22:49He was going to ask, were there even anyone to see that
- 22:52you were drafting somebody?
- 22:54I don't know how they police that.
- 22:56Because again, there was only one flagger and he was a turn
- 22:5810 right before you put it in.
- 23:00And I was like, okay.
- 23:02Your experience reminds me of when GTM got together and tried to do that
- 23:07electric cart Enduro and not fully understanding the rules and the strategy.
- 23:13And we were pitting in and changing drivers and swapping carts and stuff
- 23:16where everybody else literally was driving the carts until they died.
- 23:20The race would stop and then they would get a new cart and
- 23:23then the race would resume.
- 23:24It was the most ass backwards thing I'd ever seen.
- 23:27It made no sense.
- 23:28Absolutely.
- 23:29What was a nice followup to the Green Grand Prix, especially if you want to make
- 23:33a weekend out of going to Watkins Glen.
- 23:35I mean, there's a million things to do up there.
- 23:37Go to Lake Seneca, go to the local wineries and the breweries and do
- 23:41some antiquing and all that fun stuff.
- 23:43It's a great place for a weekend getaway.
- 23:46Our friends over at the International Motor Racing Research Center also held
- 23:49their eighth annual model car show.
- 23:52The next day.
- 23:53So I stopped by before I went home.
- 23:55I grabbed some breakfast at Toby's donuts, which was fantastic.
- 23:58Great little diner cafe there in downtown.
- 24:01And I went over to the IMRRC, which shares its location with
- 24:04the Watkins Glen public library.
- 24:05A bunch of collectors came out and it wasn't just model cars.
- 24:09It was Legos.
- 24:10It was dioramas.
- 24:12It was slot cars.
- 24:13It was all sorts of stuff.
- 24:15And what was cool is I got to experience another side.
- 24:19Of the motorsport enthusiast community.
- 24:22I always knew existed, but I never personally kind of crossed that threshold.
- 24:26And I'm sitting there and a guy's talking about this McLaren Lego thing.
- 24:30And then the other guy's like, Oh, I got that.
- 24:32The model car.
- 24:32And they're like comparing the models and the details.
- 24:35And then they're suddenly talking about Daniela Ricardo.
- 24:38Like it evolved into these conversations.
- 24:40And I'm like, They're car guys, just like the rest of us, but they're probably
- 24:43smarter because they're only spending, you know, 94 cents for a matchbox versus, you
- 24:47know, 94, 000 for, you know, a brand new car or whatever, but it was really cool
- 24:52to share stories and then they were like, well, what do you have in your collection?
- 24:55And I'm like.
- 24:55One to one scale, or are we talking, you know, one 64, like those kinds of things.
- 25:00And, and, you know, swapping stories.
- 25:02And I actually talked about the Falcon X BGT build that I recently
- 25:06did from the block zone, which we've talked about on our holiday episode.
- 25:10And the guys were really interested about that.
- 25:12Somebody else was like, Oh, I got one of those right here.
- 25:14And he had a McLaren formula car that he bought.
- 25:16And we talked about the build experience and it was, it was really cool.
- 25:19It was different.
- 25:20It was very pleasant.
- 25:21You know, going to the center is always a lot of fun.
- 25:23It's in trenched in history.
- 25:25Every time you turn around, there's something else going on.
- 25:28There's new things to look at and whatnot.
- 25:30So it was a good time.
- 25:31Very much enjoyed that.
- 25:33So if you're interested in next year's green Grand Prix, check
- 25:35out www dot green, grumpy.
- 25:37com.
- 25:38And then look at some of the other things that might be going
- 25:40on Watkins Glen that weekend.
- 25:42And don't forget to hit up house of Hong.
- 25:43Uh, yeah.
- 25:47Moving on, we need to talk about some more states that are pushing back on
- 25:53the alleged ICE bans and phase outs.
- 25:58Wait a minute, hold on.
- 25:58Did you mean states that are in support of Phasing out ice, correct?
- 26:02No, there are states that are in favor of getting rid of ice and
- 26:07all EV and all electric and all that, but there are actually states
- 26:10retaliating, pushing back and saying, no, we want to keep our petrol cars.
- 26:16Two of them.
- 26:17You can probably guess that would be the country of Texas.
- 26:20Yeah.
- 26:20The Republic of Texas is definitely is at the top of that list
- 26:25followed closely by Colorado.
- 26:27I mean, one of the most outdoorsy States in the country shout
- 26:31out to herb day, Colorado.
- 26:33That's right But what I was a little kind of surprised by his New Hampshire
- 26:36is pushing back Saying let's take a chill pill on these phase outs and these bands
- 26:42Mmm, maybe they actually have Intelligent lawmakers in their state their lobbyists
- 26:47are better than the rest I would have thought Michigan would be on the list
- 26:50if that was the case with the heart of the automotive industry there, but I
- 26:53guess not in light of all that there are organizations like PRI and SEMA and
- 26:58things like that, that are going to bat as well for these types of initiatives.
- 27:02They've been behind the right to repair act, the right to modify they're
- 27:06behind keeping motor sports alive.
- 27:08There's a lot of things going on.
- 27:10I tell a lot of my motor sports compatriots, if you're not a member of
- 27:13PRI, you should be thinking about it.
- 27:15It's pretty cheap.
- 27:16It's like 40 bucks a year and you get access to.
- 27:19All their government affairs, things that they're working on, the legislation, a
- 27:23lot of insight webinars and things like that, where you can actually see what
- 27:27they're up to, what they're talking about.
- 27:29There's some really interesting stuff going on with PRI and SEMA in terms of
- 27:33them advocating for us as enthusiasts, but also advocating for our lovers in general.
- 27:40And for folks that maybe aren't ready to transition to EV or
- 27:43hybrid or whatever have you.
- 27:45So really interesting stuff going on at performance racing.
- 27:48com.
- 27:48You've said multiple times that the answer is not all one or all the other.
- 27:53It's a nice mix of all because everybody has a different use case.
- 27:58So why can't we all just be happy?
- 27:59Since we're still talking about Earth Day and green initiatives, there's been
- 28:04a lot of Hubbaloo in the last month over at the environmental protection agency.
- 28:10They would like to close, as they say, a SUV loophole, which I didn't appreciate
- 28:17that this existed and is basically the reason, I guess, why so many
- 28:22people were willing to purchase these monstrosities back in the day even, right?
- 28:26They're much better today.
- 28:28Somewhat better fuel economy, I guess, and more luxurious.
- 28:31They don't flip over and all that good stuff.
- 28:33But apparently back then there was a loophole that was goes as
- 28:36far back as the seventies, because there was a lot of people, obviously
- 28:40there always has been that use SUVs or big trucks exclusively for.
- 28:45work, whether you're a farmer or other industries.
- 28:49And so there was a loophole for them not to suffer severe punishments
- 28:52because of fuel inefficiency, that became a loophole for personal use.
- 28:58And so that allowed people to not be penalized, have any sort of repercussion
- 29:04to having some monstrosity that gets eight miles to the gallon as you're just going
- 29:07to work and sitting stuck in traffic.
- 29:09And then to further that apparently in 2010, there was further loophole
- 29:14craziness that happened that essentially said the bigger your footprint, i.
- 29:18e.
- 29:18the larger your chassis, you still get exempt from like more stringent shit.
- 29:24So car manufacturers, it's in your best interest to actually make shit bigger.
- 29:29Wow.
- 29:29Oh, man.
- 29:30Thank you.
- 29:31Thank you.
- 29:31And this EPA.
- 29:33Come now.
- 29:34And wasn't there something we talked about like last year?
- 29:37If you slapped stickers on the side of your monstrosity, like a G Wagon or
- 29:42something like that, you could consider it as a work vehicle and therefore
- 29:45it would fall into this loophole.
- 29:47Yes, yes.
- 29:47So, you know, small businesses do that stuff all the time.
- 29:50Because the vehicle, it's over a certain weight or something like that.
- 29:54They use it as a commercial vehicle and then they write it off on their taxes.
- 29:57And yeah, it's good stuff.
- 29:58As someone who's in the market for a suburban now that my family is
- 30:03growing, I hope I can still buy a used one before they close this loophole.
- 30:06Ford Flex with the EcoBoost.
- 30:08That's all I'm saying.
- 30:08Uh, not big enough.
- 30:10Have you seen my family?
- 30:11I have soon to be two children that would potentially reach seven feet tall.
- 30:14Yeah.
- 30:15Right.
- 30:15And then the dogs.
- 30:16And a hundred pound Labrador.
- 30:17Yeah.
- 30:17So a Ford Flex, not gonna do it.
- 30:19Sorry, we're sorry, bro.
- 30:20Not going to do it.
- 30:21Not going to do it.
- 30:23I mean, we drive maybe 5, 000 miles a year combined.
- 30:26It's not that terrible of an issue.
- 30:28Well, what is terrible is the EPA.
- 30:31Yes, I agree.
- 30:32The EPA is terrible.
- 30:34End of story.
- 30:35Leave it right there.
- 30:36What is the next article?
- 30:38There's another article from PRI kind of affirming what I was
- 30:41mentioning, that there's a lot of Hubbaloo over at the EPA this month.
- 30:44And basically, I even heard this on NPR, I heard this on other places, they
- 30:49are pursuing new standards before the supposed 2032 cutover, all EV, no more
- 30:57petrol cars, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 30:58And when you boil it back, 17 states that are basically latching onto the
- 31:04new CARB rules that are coming out, And they're changing the numbers, the
- 31:09metrics that manufacturers have to achieve in terms of their emissions output.
- 31:14And here's where it gets a little tricky because people are like, Oh my
- 31:17God, this is the end of everything.
- 31:19There's never going to be another Mustang.
- 31:22It's like, all right, put your pitchforks down.
- 31:24Do you extinguish your torches for a second?
- 31:26The way this works is they have to have a 90 mile per gallon.
- 31:33Chevy Bolt to basically swing the pendulum so they can have a nine mile
- 31:39per gallon Chevy Camaro ZL one 28, whatever the hell it is, and then
- 31:44everything else has to fit in between.
- 31:45So what it is is they're changing the standards for the average
- 31:49miles per gallon, sort of like that average speed per lap that we talked
- 31:52about the green Grand Prix, same thing with these manufacturers,
- 31:55they're changing the average miles per gallon that the entire fleet.
- 31:59Needs to achieve.
- 32:01And so that number is going up, but with the recent adoption of EVs and
- 32:05the new mental gymnastics and new math that you have to do there to make that
- 32:09convert to miles per gallon, they can still afford to have big pickup trucks
- 32:13and things like that in the fleet.
- 32:15So I'm curious to see how it all comes out in the wash at the end of the day.
- 32:19What I find interesting though, is just before all this hit is when Ford is like,
- 32:26we're not going to sell any more sedans.
- 32:29Forget the hatchbacks.
- 32:30The focus is dead.
- 32:31The Mondeo is gone.
- 32:32Known as the fusion here in the United States.
- 32:34You know, stuff like that.
- 32:35They just checked them all at the door.
- 32:37They don't have an EV right now to really compensate for the number of F 150s.
- 32:43Best selling car in North America.
- 32:45They have the lightning.
- 32:46They've got the Mach E, and they've got the plug in hybrid Fusion.
- 32:50No, the Fusion's dead.
- 32:51The Fusion's gone.
- 32:52Don't they have an EV escape or a plug in escape or something like that?
- 32:56I don't know.
- 32:56I'm not a Ford fan.
- 32:57But what I'm getting at is there's not much to compensate for the amount of But
- 33:02then they just go to Tesla and buy credit.
- 33:03Possibly, right?
- 33:05And the cycle continues.
- 33:06Exactly.
- 33:07So nothing's really changing, but what is changing is the number of
- 33:11wagons, sports coupes, the things that some of us really do enjoy.
- 33:16Those numbers are getting smaller every year that goes by.
- 33:19I know we talked at the beginning of the year, the number of cars
- 33:21with manual transmission sold is up this year compared to previous.
- 33:25I don't see that lasting forever either.
- 33:28Well, the problem that none of this takes into account is what's going on with
- 33:32Porsche and their development of these.
- 33:36Greener traditional fuels, e fuels, gasoline, diesel, whatever that aren't
- 33:41going to have that's maybe the same environment impacts as we see today.
- 33:45How does that play into here?
- 33:46Suddenly we had magic gasoline that there's nothing harmful
- 33:50coming out of the tailpipe because those molecules don't exist.
- 33:53If you don't have nitrogen and those bad things in the fuel to begin
- 33:56with, it can't convert into there's nitrogen in the air and all that stuff.
- 34:00Naturally.
- 34:01Yes, but like it's not going to have the same impact.
- 34:04Right?
- 34:05So.
- 34:06If we magically had that today, what does this conversation look like?
- 34:09Exactly.
- 34:10And you know, what's funny is I don't know if it was an April Fool's thing,
- 34:13and we're going to talk about crazy YouTubers as we move on here, but
- 34:16there was something coming back saying that Porsche's new e fuel is illegal.
- 34:21You know, they're pushing to make it illegal.
- 34:22I'm like, what are we talking about now?
- 34:24What, why let them experiment, let them see if they can come up with an option
- 34:29to keep petrol engines on the road.
- 34:31I don't know what it is.
- 34:32But there's definitely something fishy going on.
- 34:35And somebody has their hands in the government's pocket.
- 34:38Oh, capitalism, baby.
- 34:39Somebody has the excellent lobbyists.
- 34:41There's something going on that we don't know in the background that
- 34:44yes, there's somebody's all this crap.
- 34:46Somebody's pockets getting lined.
- 34:48I hate when the government oversteps and starts pushing
- 34:51people around to push their agenda.
- 34:53And it's not even their agenda.
- 34:54It's the agenda of private corporations.
- 34:56As Tanya alluded to capitalism.
- 34:58Leave me alone.
- 34:59Just let me do what I want to do.
- 35:00Some of this is because as a commodity in the energy sector, electricity itself in
- 35:06the United States was cheap, super cheap.
- 35:09It was super cheap.
- 35:12And what's the best way to make everybody have to pay 500 a
- 35:16month at home for electricity?
- 35:18Well, let's introduce electric cars.
- 35:20Not everybody can afford an electric car.
- 35:22Not everybody can afford the infrastructure to charge an electric car.
- 35:25There are So many people in this country that can't afford to do any of that stuff.
- 35:30They can barely afford.
- 35:31I mean, we joked about her and this lot in the last drive thru, but that
- 35:34woman who was so proud of herself for going out and being able to
- 35:36buy a Ford escort for what was it?
- 35:39300 a month.
- 35:40Yeah.
- 35:41There are so many people in this country that are like that.
- 35:44But unfortunately, that's the way the world works.
- 35:46How is this going to be possible?
- 35:48I don't want to say the driving is a necessity because it's not, but you're
- 35:51basically pricing them out of the ability to get to work and have transportation.
- 35:56Now, are you going to, in conjunction with this, are you going to increase the.
- 36:00Public transportation infrastructure, if you're going to do something to offset
- 36:04it to where these people that can't afford to drive anymore have alternate
- 36:07means to get where they need to go, then, okay, we can talk about that.
- 36:10That's what was really interesting about the lunch and learn at the green
- 36:14Grand Prix is seeing those electric buses and hearing from British aerospace
- 36:19and hearing from Toyota about the technologies on the big scale, because
- 36:22how many times have we talked about why are they penalizing the consumers
- 36:26and the workers when you've got buses?
- 36:29At airports around the country and metro systems and all this stuff.
- 36:33And you've got delivery vehicles and police cars and stuff.
- 36:36That's just sitting there idling all day long.
- 36:38What you don't think because they're idling, they're not polluting.
- 36:41So to your point there into Tanya's point earlier that she made, we don't
- 36:44have enough money to pay for lobbyists.
- 36:46We're not corporations.
- 36:47We can't pay for lobbyists.
- 36:49So if we got everybody together, everybody puts in 5.
- 36:52We'll start a new tier on Patreon.
- 36:54We'll call it the lobbyist here.
- 36:55You can start the lobbyist here.
- 36:57Everybody puts in their 5 and we will lobby for the general
- 37:01consumer, not a corporation.
- 37:03We're a nonprofit.
- 37:05So we will lobby for the general consumer.
- 37:07To get your needs passed because apparently the politicians
- 37:10don't give a shit about it.
- 37:11There's a lot of different, unfortunately, divisive topics here, right?
- 37:15It creates these arguments and whatever.
- 37:18I mean, I'm all in favor of all cars.
- 37:21I have my biases.
- 37:23The things I like and like I always joke, just like, you know when I find
- 37:26something at the grocery store that I enjoy to eat because I like it,
- 37:29they're not gonna produce it anymore.
- 37:31Right?
- 37:31So it's sort of like manual transmissions and two door coops and things like that.
- 37:35It's just the thing of the past, I'm always in the 1%, but it's
- 37:38not like I'm one percenter.
- 37:40It's I'm in the 1% of enthusiasts that like really weird stuff.
- 37:44But for the general population, I agree with you.
- 37:46The movement is a little premature.
- 37:48We've talked about that before.
- 37:50And I look at it too.
- 37:51We have a hybrid.
- 37:52I don't have two 20 in my garage for these level two or above chargers
- 37:57and getting a level two put in.
- 37:59I don't care how many government incentives you give me.
- 38:02I still have to find an electrician that is willing to take my money, do the work.
- 38:07Retrofitted into the house, which is way more expensive than a lot of
- 38:10people realize my house is older, so I got to upgrade my service.
- 38:14I got to do a bunch of stuff.
- 38:15Sub box in the, it's a lot of money that has to be put out to do this conversion.
- 38:20And so right now I'm really fortunate that my wife's vehicle can be charged
- 38:25in a level one charger overnight.
- 38:27But if we were to replace that, or let's say tomorrow I ran out and bought
- 38:31a Mach E, I wouldn't know what to do.
- 38:33And I don't have the patience to drive down to the local library and go
- 38:38charge and wait there for 45 minutes.
- 38:41It's inconvenient.
- 38:42Plug it in and spend a week charging like that one guy did.
- 38:45You own a house.
- 38:46You've got a single family home.
- 38:47Yep.
- 38:47What do you see a lot of driving around the cities in particular?
- 38:52Normal driving, you see a lot of apartments.
- 38:54Yeah.
- 38:54A lot of renters.
- 38:55How are they going to charge their cars?
- 38:57How is, you know, a single mom going to charge her car to go to run her shift job?
- 39:02You know, what about people that are on campus, right?
- 39:05In school or whatever.
- 39:06And some campuses, you're not allowed to have a car on campus in your X years or
- 39:09whatever, and not until the later years.
- 39:11But still, nonetheless, there are people on campus that have cars because they
- 39:14also have jobs they have to get to.
- 39:15And they're living there.
- 39:15Our university is going to install chargers for these people to be
- 39:19able to like, go do their lives.
- 39:20I mean, There's a lot to it.
- 39:22I think it's disheartening all these years that they throw out where it's
- 39:25like in 10 years from today we will be Ev, I'm like y'all can't even freaking
- 39:31repave the road two mile stretch But you're gonna like redo an entire
- 39:37country's electrical infrastructure grid to support this in 10 years?
- 39:42For DMV people, be on alert that the GW Parkway is commencing construction
- 39:47that will go on till 2025, where you will alternate between two lanes and
- 39:52one lane available during weekday rushes, and then only one lane available
- 39:56on your weekends and any other time.
- 39:58Enjoy this for the next two years.
- 40:00That's okay.
- 40:01Those of us in the Baltimore area are already used to 695
- 40:05constantly being under construction.
- 40:07So it's not a big deal for us.
- 40:08No, but the point is, it's like they're repaving a two lane highway divided.
- 40:13I forget the total mileage.
- 40:14Once you come off the beltway and heading to the airport or whatnot, I
- 40:17mean, it's not short, but still it's like, that's going to take two years.
- 40:20Just to do that, but you're gonna re infrastructure everything in like 10
- 40:25and everybody's gonna be buying EVs.
- 40:26That's where the disconnect is.
- 40:28That's true.
- 40:28And our last article here dovetails right into the what we've been talking about.
- 40:32It's the coverage from NPR.
- 40:34They have about a 15 minute podcast that they added to this.
- 40:38I actually listened to this the day Everything went
- 40:42really sour with Elon and NPR.
- 40:45And we're going to talk about that as we move along, but their reporters got on.
- 40:48They said, look, let's summarize all these EPA changes for you guys.
- 40:52And they were basically saying the EPA wants to put millions more EVs on the
- 40:56road, should you buy one right now?
- 40:58And actually I thought it was really good of the NPR reporters to say, you
- 41:03know what, no, understand that this.
- 41:05Rule applies to new cars.
- 41:08They're not going to take away your petrol car.
- 41:10They literally said gasoline is not going away anytime soon.
- 41:14And that's great.
- 41:15And that was very positive.
- 41:16And they're trying to basically dispel and dilute any sort of sudden
- 41:21panic that people are going to have.
- 41:22What I want to remind people of is, yes, there are plenty
- 41:26of petrol cars to go around.
- 41:28But right now there's a weird situation happening where it's actually
- 41:34cheaper to go buy a new car than to buy a used car in a lot of cases.
- 41:40And so we talk about this a lot on what should I buy, you know,
- 41:43our sub series here on break fix.
- 41:45Be careful what you're buying.
- 41:47Don't end up with a 98 escort that's costing you 300 a month because the used
- 41:52car market is due for a course correction very soon because it cannot sustain the
- 41:59prices that used cars are at right now.
- 42:01Not for what you're getting.
- 42:02Well, and every individual person has to look at their particular situation, right?
- 42:06Because if you already have your car paid off, it's in good, reliable condition,
- 42:10and it has many, many miles to go.
- 42:13It is not more cost effective for you to go out and shell
- 42:17out 50, for a brand new car.
- 42:19If you have it that it's like buying chiclets at the grocery store, cool.
- 42:23Otherwise, keep driving your car.
- 42:25And even if you're doing regular maintenance, have to
- 42:28fix something here and there.
- 42:29It's still going to be more cost effective for a long time versus just
- 42:33dropping and buying something new that also still has its own issues.
- 42:38And if it's an EV, as was just mentioned, level two charging, all this stuff,
- 42:42you got to pay extra infrastructure in your own home and you have to have a
- 42:46place to have it and all that stuff.
- 42:47There's other considerations.
- 42:48Not only that, there's something that you touched on In the ladies and EVs episode
- 42:55of what should I buy that we did earlier in March and what was really important
- 42:59about that is people are not thinking about the long term environmental impact
- 43:04of getting rid of their existing car.
- 43:07What you guys touched on and what you talked about was really important because.
- 43:11Not only is there not a plan right now, although there are a lot of
- 43:14propositions to say, this is how we're going to handle the batteries
- 43:17when it's time to recycle them.
- 43:18Well, guess what?
- 43:19Everything's new.
- 43:20So we haven't crossed that bridge.
- 43:22We're not recycling anything yet.
- 43:23Right?
- 43:23Even the Tesla model S's from 10 years ago are still on the road.
- 43:27So we haven't really had to handle the hazmat until we've
- 43:30gotten into an accident situation.
- 43:32But here's what happens to your used car.
- 43:35Let's think about diesel gate.
- 43:36We talked about this years ago, even before we started to show what's
- 43:39going to happen to all these cars.
- 43:41Daniel buys them.
- 43:42Yeah.
- 43:42What happens to all these cars that Volkswagen bought back?
- 43:46And the speculation was they were getting put on container ships and sent to like
- 43:51Africa and Asia and all these places.
- 43:54And they were being resold because the demand was super high and the
- 43:57U S government wanted them out anyway, because this Evie thing was
- 44:01already on the horizon and all this conspiracy theory and speculation.
- 44:05But what I'm getting to and what I'm driving towards with that is your
- 44:08car, just because you traded it in.
- 44:11It doesn't mean it's dead.
- 44:13Somebody else might continue to drive that car for 10 years.
- 44:16They're going to put in those couple extra bucks.
- 44:18Maybe it is a couple thousand dollars to get it back on the road
- 44:21and it's going to continue to live.
- 44:23And then once it is, let's say dead.
- 44:25It continues to live more in a salvage yard, rotting in the middle
- 44:29of a field where it's letting go of its fluids into the ground and
- 44:33you know, all this kind of stuff.
- 44:34And it's just like your car isn't really done done until even it's gone through
- 44:39the crusher or it gets melted down.
- 44:41They're better at recycling them now than they used to be.
- 44:44It doesn't happen the day after you trade in your car.
- 44:47It happens years later.
- 44:50Maybe a decade after you got rid of that car.
- 44:52So think about it for a second.
- 44:54I need to change a starter in the car.
- 44:56What's that cost me?
- 44:57200 bucks.
- 44:58Oh, we're just going to trade it in.
- 44:59I get a new car, spend the 200 bucks and your car's got a lot
- 45:02more life in it than you think.
- 45:04Maintain your car.
- 45:05Maybe just.
- 45:05Yeah.
- 45:06Minimum stuff.
- 45:07Don't be an asshat.
- 45:08You don't have to hit every pothole you see and run over
- 45:10every curb that you encounter.
- 45:12You know, that'll keep the longevity of your car as well.
- 45:16A hundred percent.
- 45:16Change your oil.
- 45:17Yes.
- 45:18That is super important.
- 45:19If you're worried about that too, you know, we've talked about it before.
- 45:22We had Rick Lee on the show.
- 45:24Look at alternative oils like evolve that are made from
- 45:27plants rather than petroleum.
- 45:29There's a lot of alternatives out there right now.
- 45:31There's a lot of science.
- 45:32That's being perfected and things like that, but it's not
- 45:35as cut and dry as it used to be.
- 45:37So in kind of wrapping up this thought about earth day and about herb day and
- 45:42earth day, and all that is just take a step back and think about your car
- 45:46and think about what you can do, be a better steward of the environment.
- 45:50But like we talked about on other episodes, there's different
- 45:53ways to go about doing that.
- 45:55Well, it's time that we switch to Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche news.
- 46:00I'm just going to read the headline.
- 46:01Audi owner finds basic HVAC function paywalled after
- 46:05pressing the button for it.
- 46:10I called it!
- 46:11I knew it was, I knew it was coming.
- 46:12I'm going to revise that cheap bastard Audi owner finds
- 46:16basic HVAC function paywall.
- 46:18There you go.
- 46:19The owner jokingly tongue in cheek calls himself out for being cheap anyway.
- 46:23And he says, every time that he gets in his car now, it reminds him.
- 46:27That he's cheap because he did not buy the Audi tri zone climate
- 46:30control for his Q4 e tron.
- 46:33The button for it is still there in the car because gone are the days of the
- 46:37manufacturers putting blank buttons there.
- 46:39It's cheaper just to manufacture them all the same.
- 46:42And if you don't have the function, it just doesn't work, didn't do anything.
- 46:45This one does something though.
- 46:46It says that function has not been purchased.
- 46:49He doesn't have heat?
- 46:50No, he doesn't have a very specific way to use the HVAC system.
- 46:55Wah, wah, alright, alright, Karen.
- 46:58Every car has heat.
- 46:59Yeah, it's called Tri Zone Climate Control.
- 47:02So I'm assuming it must divert, you know, like, oh, you can control different Part
- 47:06like the back seat versus the front seat.
- 47:08You can put heat on your feet and coolness on your balls.
- 47:12Yeah.
- 47:12Come on.
- 47:13So, I mean, totally like a luxury purchase add on, obviously it's a Q4 e
- 47:18tron, that's a luxury purchase itself.
- 47:21Yeah.
- 47:21It's already spending a hundred grand.
- 47:22These, this is some first world BS problems right here.
- 47:25But it is scary.
- 47:27Nonetheless, when they start talking about all the subscription stuff, because it's
- 47:31following the airline model where they've gone, Oh yeah, economy now we haven't.
- 47:35Basic economy.
- 47:36And not because you're a basic bee, but we want to nickel and dime you even more.
- 47:43For everything.
- 47:44It's the Spirit Airlines model.
- 47:46Oh, it's terrible.
- 47:47I mean, basically, but now the majors are doing it, right?
- 47:50So it's like, Oh, United, you want the cheapest ticket possible?
- 47:52Well, you will be forced to sit next to the toilet and you'll have to pay to bring
- 47:58a bag on the plane to put under your seat.
- 48:00Can I sit in the toilet?
- 48:02Yeah, but you can upgrade to economy plus and sit one row in front of the toilet.
- 48:06Yes.
- 48:07For 50 a ticket.
- 48:08Yeah.
- 48:09Right.
- 48:10This is why I don't like to fly again.
- 48:12This is why I'm all for used cars, but this new stuff scares me because again,
- 48:17you buy this car used in five years.
- 48:20Can I turn this feature on?
- 48:21What's the infrastructure supporting it is the Amazon in the cloud system.
- 48:25That's running the subscription for the HVAC going to be there in five years.
- 48:30Like it's insane.
- 48:31Like, stop, give me a button, turn it on.
- 48:33I've never been a fan of all the packages on cars.
- 48:36You got to have the premium package and the premium plus and the
- 48:39prestige and the prestige black.
- 48:41And just give me all the options and let's call it a day.
- 48:45The car is the car.
- 48:46Like.
- 48:46Everybody's making it way more complicated than it needs to be.
- 48:49You just want the car to be too bespoke.
- 48:51It's what I don't want it to be is software where it's like, well, you
- 48:54need this add on and you need this DLC.
- 48:56It's like when you buy a video game.
- 48:57Now you can't get the full game.
- 48:59They give you something half baked over the next six months.
- 49:02You got to pay for all these add ons and cars are not like that.
- 49:07When I buy a car, I want to hit the HVAC and I want it to work.
- 49:11And what was wrong with the dials, like we had 20 years ago, where you
- 49:15pointed at your head and you pointed at your feet and you'd pointed at
- 49:18the defroster and you just turned a freaking knob to get this done.
- 49:22Eric, you're a dinosaur.
- 49:24I'm like, yeah, I'm from the Jurassic era.
- 49:26Cars 2000s.
- 49:31There's an argument to be made around safety in that because All these
- 49:36infotainment screens where the stupid buttons don't work and you gotta
- 49:40pound on them because all that crap technology is still crap, honestly.
- 49:44It's more distracting to have to, oh I gotta sift through four screens I need
- 49:49to turn my heat on or my defrosters on versus like Dials and buttons, you can
- 49:54see them out of the corner of your eye, you instinctively, no muscle memory,
- 49:57like, you can reach for them without even looking, and keep your eyes on the
- 50:01road as you should be doing, as opposed to completely distracting yourself
- 50:04with a frickin laptop in your car.
- 50:06I'm telling you, it's all bullshit.
- 50:08The government trying to make things safer and all this other
- 50:10bullshit, it's all fuckin bullshit.
- 50:12They don't care about us, it's all about the money.
- 50:14The lobbyists for those infotainment systems, yeah.
- 50:18Capitalism.
- 50:18They don't give a shit about us.
- 50:20Whoever thinks that the government cares about us.
- 50:23Yes.
- 50:23The government cares about the dollar.
- 50:26It's all about the dollar.
- 50:28Yeah.
- 50:31Sing it Tanya.
- 50:32Amen.
- 50:32Amen sister.
- 50:33Sing it.
- 50:33It's the eighties all over again.
- 50:35Like I just see Michael Douglas.
- 50:38Greed is.
- 50:39Good as like Gordon Gekko, right?
- 50:42I mean, it's like, come on.
- 50:43Yeah, it's out of control.
- 50:45I will probably never buy a new vehicle ever again.
- 50:48I probably have the last two.
- 50:50Maybe there's another vehicle in my future down the line a long way
- 50:54away, but I think I've turned all my attention now to older cars.
- 50:59I'm in that collector mindset and I'm just like, Oh, if I get rid of this and
- 51:03I can buy that and blah, blah, blah.
- 51:05And I want this car from the 80s or from the 70s.
- 51:08You got to stop doing what should I buys?
- 51:09You're, you're, you're starting to, you're being influenced.
- 51:12It's bad for me, man.
- 51:15I did.
- 51:16I stopped the other day.
- 51:16I was like, I was looking at a Ford Maverick, not the pickup truck
- 51:19that everybody's thinking about.
- 51:20Now I'm talking about a 72 or don't do it.
- 51:23Don't buy that piece of shit.
- 51:28But since we're talking about Ford's, let's switch gears.
- 51:31This is something that is right up your alley, Brad.
- 51:33So let's talk domestic news brought to us by American muscle.
- 51:36Your source for OEM performance and replacement parts for your
- 51:40Chevy, Ford, or Mopar product.
- 51:43The 2026, you're gonna have to wait a little bit.
- 51:46Ford Mustang.
- 51:48Raptor.
- 51:49Raptor all the things.
- 51:51Yeah, Raptor all the things.
- 51:52Do you mean the Porsche 911 Rally?
- 51:54Thank you!
- 51:55Thank you!
- 51:55Because that's exactly what I thought when I first saw it.
- 51:58Do you know what this is?
- 52:00The auto manufacturers see the writing on the wall, they realize that we're
- 52:03going to be in a post apocalyptic world soon, and they're giving us our Mad Max
- 52:07cars now, so that we can prepare For the impending doom when the world implodes.
- 52:13Dang, that's a good one.
- 52:15I'm good with that.
- 52:16And if the Aussies still made cars, cause we're not sure if
- 52:21they make anything anymore, this would be the Ford Falcon XBGT.
- 52:25This is Mad Max's car.
- 52:27That's pretty cool.
- 52:27Here's a, what should I buy?
- 52:29What should I buy?
- 52:30Mad Max edition in the future post apocalyptic world, what car
- 52:36would you want to be like this?
- 52:38The first question is what fuel source survived?
- 52:42My guess is diesel.
- 52:43Diesel will be around forever.
- 52:44We're all going to be running biodiesel because we can go
- 52:46out and find vegetable oil.
- 52:48They used to joke all the time, you can run a diesel on piss.
- 52:51Well, let's get that done.
- 52:52I mean, think about that recycling plan, how efficient would that be?
- 52:56How also, Oh, I got to stop.
- 52:58I got to fill the tank.
- 52:59I mean, think about it.
- 53:00You get the death and the power from the same fluid.
- 53:04It's all right there.
- 53:05Just urinate in the tank.
- 53:07Done.
- 53:07We're going to start this company and we're going to start researching now.
- 53:09If there are any chemical engineers out there that want to help us with that
- 53:12wink, wink, nudge, nudge, Tanya, then please sign on, uh, we'll have a job
- 53:16applications on our patron under our lobbyist tier soon to be on Patreon.
- 53:21Yeah.
- 53:22Yes.
- 53:22We're looking for chem E interns to make this diesel.
- 53:26What does that smell like coming out the pipe?
- 53:28It's got to be better than death now.
- 53:30Well, it depends.
- 53:31Did you have asparagus for lunch?
- 53:32Oh, that's how you get that extra five horsepower.
- 53:36Is that that green diesel?
- 53:39Those cars are going to be running in the green Grand Prix next year.
- 53:42As I was coming back from the green Grand Prix, a lot of miles on the
- 53:46road, back from the track to home.
- 53:48And I saw in traffic.
- 53:50Remember we talked about the last two routes for the facade.
- 53:53They're not being built even here anymore in the States.
- 53:55They kind of phased them out last year.
- 53:57So a brand new facade and then next to it was a literally a brand new still
- 54:03had sticker plates on it, Malibu.
- 54:06And it got me thinking.
- 54:07I paused for a second because at first I didn't recognize the Malibu.
- 54:10They redesigned it.
- 54:11The rear lights are a little angular, kind of reminiscent of the Camaro,
- 54:15and they added this nice little integrated kind of spoiler to the back.
- 54:20It's sort of aggressive looking.
- 54:21The front hasn't changed too much.
- 54:23It's sort of All the blazer and they all look the same, the equinox
- 54:27and all them from the front.
- 54:28It's got that big, massive grill like a Lexus.
- 54:31And I'm looking at them from the third lane.
- 54:33They're next to each other.
- 54:34And I'm like, what would I rather own being a diehard
- 54:37Volkswagen guy for so long?
- 54:39How was the question?
- 54:40Cause I was thinking about it.
- 54:41They're sort of like the last of the sedans because those
- 54:44cars are being phased out.
- 54:46As we know, the Malibu is still around.
- 54:48You know, we don't know what the expiration date is on
- 54:50that, but the Passat's gone.
- 54:51A Malibu should have died in 2000.
- 54:54And I've rented a Malibu and the inside, they're quite nice.
- 54:56I mean, we make fun of the Impala for sure, but the Malibu is not bad.
- 55:01The interior cannot withstand candle fire though.
- 55:04This we know to be true.
- 55:05Again, looking at them going back and forth and what it
- 55:07did is it brought to light.
- 55:09You don't see too many full size sedans on the road anymore because
- 55:12again, they're just being phased out.
- 55:14And so I said to myself, you know, if I was in that market, What would I buy?
- 55:18I sort of fell squarely on the Malibu because in profile, it doesn't look
- 55:24like a rental car like the Passat does.
- 55:27It's a little more aggressive the way they restyled it.
- 55:30In reality, I would have neither, but I became a fan for a moment
- 55:34there as I was in traffic.
- 55:35And so I just, I wanted to bring that up.
- 55:37You could go get a Toyota Crown, you know, You're right about
- 55:42not having full size sedans.
- 55:44Toyota is bringing it out.
- 55:45The all new 2023 Toyota Crown full size sedan, which will probably be a hybrid.
- 55:51So that fits with this whole green theme, huh?
- 55:53Well, since you brought up Toyota, I mean, they're, they
- 55:56are all over the map right now.
- 55:57We've heard you say it before, Tanya, Honda and Toyota seem to
- 56:00flip flop in terms of, you know, who's exciting for a decade or so.
- 56:04And right now, Toyota is the hotness.
- 56:08And they have teased the fourth generation, Mr.
- 56:11Two.
- 56:11Oh, my attention.
- 56:15Right?
- 56:15I don't fit, but a lot of my friends do, so I can live vicariously.
- 56:19It doesn't look like a car from this decade.
- 56:22It looks like it's straight out of the late 90s, early 2000s.
- 56:26The blue one doesn't look like a car from this decade.
- 56:28The yellow one looks like a car from this decade.
- 56:31Not in a good way.
- 56:32Just like the Integra, these are two different designs for the new MR2.
- 56:38And actually there's a third one if you scroll down, there's a black one.
- 56:41Yes.
- 56:42And so they're just throwing out some ideas out there.
- 56:45I don't dislike Really any of them, honestly.
- 56:49I think the yellow one looks like an Evora that was in an accident.
- 56:52I did kind of think that too.
- 56:54And the black one sort of looks like a cross between the
- 56:57third gen TT and the Cayman.
- 57:00No, the Lexus.
- 57:01What's that little two door convertible Lexus?
- 57:03The SC430.
- 57:04Kind of has a profile shape.
- 57:06And the blue one looks like a Scion.
- 57:08I just kind of go, is that a TC?
- 57:10You just kind of look at it sideways and you're just like, okay.
- 57:12Again, they could produce any one of these, all three of these.
- 57:17I'm okay with them because I think this is exciting because when was
- 57:21the last time a two seat midship runabout, which is what MR2 stands
- 57:26for, by the way, has been produced.
- 57:27Something that's like a little 914 or, or, or like a Lotus Elise type of car.
- 57:32I thought that this is cool.
- 57:33This is exciting.
- 57:34And if they make a GR version of this, let's face it, it's going to have the
- 57:38three cylinder 300 horsepower turbo.
- 57:40They said it's going to have the three cylinder.
- 57:42Yeah.
- 57:42So that's awesome.
- 57:44Awesome.
- 57:44So I sort of don't care what it looks like.
- 57:46You know what I do care about?
- 57:47You know, since I mentioned I was in traffic.
- 57:49Guess what I saw?
- 57:51The new Indegra.
- 57:53Indegra.
- 57:54And it's fugly.
- 57:57I mean, it's a TLX?
- 57:58TSX?
- 57:59Which one?
- 57:59It's bigger than I thought it was going to be.
- 58:02I appreciate the lift back, but then it makes the profile look really
- 58:06strange, right around the C pillar.
- 58:08Uh, and actually I ended up seeing two of them, one in navy blue and one in gray.
- 58:13And the color didn't make a damn bit of difference.
- 58:15Cause you know how sometimes cars look better in certain colors and they do it.
- 58:18I was just, I was not impressed.
- 58:20What I did confirm is what we suspected.
- 58:23It's huge.
- 58:24It is really, really big.
- 58:26And it's just like It has nothing to do with an Integra.
- 58:29Quote, original Integra.
- 58:30And the only way I recognized that it was an Integra was because of
- 58:33the little badge on the bumper.
- 58:35Otherwise, you're like, okay, to your point, it's like, that's
- 58:37an Acura TL, TSX, or whatever.
- 58:39Like, all right.
- 58:40You know, I thought I saw one at the Cars and Coffee I went to a couple weeks ago.
- 58:44And whatever.
- 58:46It's a car.
- 58:47That about sums it up.
- 58:48It's a car with a manual transmission.
- 58:51I can't say that I hate it.
- 58:53I have to like it based on those facts, but I would not own one.
- 58:57Yeah, unfortunately.
- 58:58I mean, I'd still drive one.
- 58:59I'd still ride around in one.
- 59:01If somebody wanted to take me around a lap of the track, I'd love to experience it.
- 59:05But yeah, I was like, not for me.
- 59:07Maybe that Malibu is where I'm at.
- 59:11No, I would not own a Malibu.
- 59:12But would you own this new Afghani supercar?
- 59:16I mean, we'll never see it.
- 59:17Ooh.
- 59:18It's interesting.
- 59:20Apparently it's basically Toyota underneath.
- 59:22The front end is very Maxima.
- 59:24Also Mustang y at the same time.
- 59:27Stang y.
- 59:27It's very stank y.
- 59:29EQS.
- 59:33But not in a good way.
- 59:34The back looks like a McLaren.
- 59:36Yes.
- 59:36It's got a lot of different cars in it.
- 59:38I'm not sure the front spoiler.
- 59:41That's the cow catcher.
- 59:42Yeah.
- 59:42I'm like, is that the scoop people up?
- 59:44It's different for sure.
- 59:45I mean, I mean, I don't see Afghanistan as a burgeoning car
- 59:49manufacturer Mecca of any sort, but.
- 59:53You know, good on them.
- 59:53If they're going to try, if somebody is going to make this happen, maybe
- 59:56this design gets sold to somebody.
- 59:59I just figured it out.
- 1:00:00This is the will.
- 1:00:00I am car.
- 1:00:01So he couldn't sell it here in the States.
- 1:00:03He went to Afghanistan and had it made there.
- 1:00:06That's what this is.
- 1:00:08Tell me it's not the will.
- 1:00:08I am car.
- 1:00:09Yeah, that makes a lot more sense now for sure.
- 1:00:12Brad, it's time for lost and found where you scour the internet
- 1:00:18looking for the newest old car available on dealership lots.
- 1:00:22All right.
- 1:00:23For this month's old gem, the 1988 Cadillac DeVille base is still available.
- 1:00:31Ray Chevrolet.
- 1:00:32Yep.
- 1:00:32Ray Chevrolet, 275 miles from where I am right now.
- 1:00:36And it will stay 275 miles away.
- 1:00:39I'm going to go get it for you for Christmas.
- 1:00:40If you want to buy me a car for Christmas.
- 1:00:42That's going to be the running joke.
- 1:00:43It was Dodge darts.
- 1:00:45That padelack is going to end up on our holiday shopping guide as a bargain
- 1:00:49because it's been sitting for so long.
- 1:00:53It's cheaper than an EV.
- 1:00:54Let's see.
- 1:00:55We've also got the Ford GT still out there.
- 1:00:58I'm looking for things of note.
- 1:00:59There's a 2005 Buick LeSabre.
- 1:01:02Custom by custom.
- 1:01:05I mean, it's just a plain white Buick LeSabre at Mark McLarty Toyota.
- 1:01:12It's not quite as good as Chuck LeDuc, but Mark McLarty is pretty
- 1:01:15good to rival your Cadillac.
- 1:01:17There's a 2006 Lincoln town car signature again, signature means.
- 1:01:23Nothing.
- 1:01:24This one's in my backyard.
- 1:01:26It is four miles away.
- 1:01:27It's cheeky Ford Lincoln.
- 1:01:29You should go do a retro test drive.
- 1:01:30I think that would be fun.
- 1:01:31Yes, I, so I need, I need to dress up like the eighties, of course.
- 1:01:35100%.
- 1:01:36Big lapels, man.
- 1:01:37Big lapels.
- 1:01:38Yes, yes.
- 1:01:39And, and, uh, bell bottom pants.
- 1:01:40No, not those.
- 1:01:41Those are Jenko's, right?
- 1:01:43Jenko, yes.
- 1:01:44That's the nineties, early 2000.
- 1:01:46Yeah.
- 1:01:46The new metal phase.
- 1:01:47Yeah.
- 1:01:47Look at Tanya.
- 1:01:49Way to go.
- 1:01:49There are a couple of 2013 Corollas out here.
- 1:01:52Remember when we used to talk about should Andrew bank buy it?
- 1:01:55Yeah.
- 1:01:55What would Andrew buy?
- 1:01:57W W a B.
- 1:01:58We found a 2 million McLaren flood car.
- 1:02:01Well, this was already purchased though.
- 1:02:02Yeah.
- 1:02:03And you know what the guy said?
- 1:02:04It's freaking worthless.
- 1:02:07Is this the, is this the one that Tavares bought?
- 1:02:10I didn't see the video.
- 1:02:11Cars junk.
- 1:02:12And unlike.
- 1:02:13Andrew's flood car Mercedes that he bought, which he alleges he made money on.
- 1:02:18The math doesn't work for me, but he uses mountain math.
- 1:02:23We know how that works.
- 1:02:24I mean, this video is an interesting insight into why sometimes as Don
- 1:02:29Weberg likes to say from garage doll magazine, the cheapest exotic
- 1:02:33ends up being the most expensive.
- 1:02:35But the views for the gram.
- 1:02:39Meanwhile, Tanya, you came across something interesting.
- 1:02:41Yes.
- 1:02:41I did.
- 1:02:42Apparently there was sort of a barn find in Holland recently.
- 1:02:47Oh.
- 1:02:47230 classic cars discovered in warehouses, an abandoned church.
- 1:02:54Apparently there was a Dutch gentleman that was collecting
- 1:02:57cars for the last 40 years.
- 1:02:59Recently, at 82 years old, his health has declined considerably.
- 1:03:03So he's no longer been taking care of them.
- 1:03:05They're no longer, I think, in his possession.
- 1:03:06They were all sold off.
- 1:03:07And so they now are.
- 1:03:08Further going to go into auction, some things like Elantra B24
- 1:03:12Spider America is in that fleet.
- 1:03:14He's got other Ferraris and Alphas and Mercedes, Jags, Astons, yada, yada.
- 1:03:20I see a FB Mazda RX 7 here.
- 1:03:22I see the XJ Jag.
- 1:03:24One of the pictures you might go, wow, these are in really horrible condition.
- 1:03:28They're really filthy.
- 1:03:29Apparently there was a fire in one of the warehouses, but
- 1:03:33like the brigade got it out.
- 1:03:34Like immediately.
- 1:03:35So nothing was actually damaged.
- 1:03:37Apparently a lot of the cars are actually in like pristine mint condition.
- 1:03:40So it's unfortunate that his health failed and, you know, people found
- 1:03:45out about this after the fact.
- 1:03:46So no one really knows the backstory here.
- 1:03:48Like, why was he collecting all these cars?
- 1:03:50Like, how did he do this?
- 1:03:51Where did he find them?
- 1:03:52That's a little bit sad to miss out on that story.
- 1:03:55But if you're in the market for some classic cars, go figure out how to
- 1:03:58get in on this auction happening May 19th in the Netherlands.
- 1:04:02How is this still a thing?
- 1:04:03How many more barns full of cars are we gonna find?
- 1:04:07It's just ridiculous.
- 1:04:08Warehouses, like, there's cars shoved everywhere.
- 1:04:11This is what happens when you trade in your old junker for an EV.
- 1:04:15You're exactly right.
- 1:04:16You thought this thing was dead.
- 1:04:18This is where the cars go.
- 1:04:19People like Daniel buy it and shove it in a building and it sits there.
- 1:04:22It's there for 50 years until someone discovers it.
- 1:04:25In other interesting historical facts, I guess, here's a list of 10 sports
- 1:04:31car vehicles that share headlights or taillights from another car.
- 1:04:35Damn, I thought you were going to say they had three spoke steering wheels.
- 1:04:38No, we haven't found that list yet.
- 1:04:39This is a grasp.
- 1:04:41So the apparently the 1991 and 2001 Lamborghini Diablo share some
- 1:04:46illumination with the Nissan 300ZX.
- 1:04:49Lister Storm and Audi 80, Lotus Esprit and Toyota Corolla 11, TVR Cerbera and Ford
- 1:04:55Fiesta Mark 3, Panos Esperante GTR1 and the Mazda NX6, the MG and the Fiat Punto.
- 1:05:04Yeah!
- 1:05:04I like it.
- 1:05:05Wait, you weren't excited about the Morgan Aero 8 sharing its
- 1:05:08front end with the Beetle RSI?
- 1:05:10I thought that would be like super exciting for you.
- 1:05:12Yes, it's very nice.
- 1:05:14I like the Hayane Sonata lights, though, for your taillights.
- 1:05:18Zezetta Marauder and the Alpine GTA have the same taillights.
- 1:05:23And the Invicta S1 and the B5.
- 1:05:275 Volkswagen Passat have the same.
- 1:05:30Tail lights.
- 1:05:31And interestingly, they're just rotated 90 degrees on the, this is not the same bite.
- 1:05:37And I was like, Oh look, that was very creative.
- 1:05:40Yes.
- 1:05:40But you won't fool us.
- 1:05:42That's right.
- 1:05:42And the real question is how many of these vehicles share their lineage
- 1:05:46with the legendary three spoke steering wheel of the Nissan R32?
- 1:05:49The answer is all the ZX, maybe the 300 ZX.
- 1:05:53Nope.
- 1:05:53Nope.
- 1:05:54That's got a four spoke steering wheel.
- 1:05:55You are a loser!
- 1:05:59LOSER!
- 1:06:00I think it's that time again.
- 1:06:02It's Teslagate time.
- 1:06:04We would be remiss.
- 1:06:05And speaking of steering wheels.
- 1:06:07Oh boy!
- 1:06:09Apparently, the yoke is a bit of a joke.
- 1:06:12Ah!
- 1:06:14You're pulling my yoke.
- 1:06:15I heard, the yoke's on them.
- 1:06:19The steering wheel's gonna cost ya.
- 1:06:21Ooooh!
- 1:06:22Yes, their whole yoke steering wheel idea, which Sounds silly to me unless you're
- 1:06:27in a Formula One car, but what do I know?
- 1:06:28Apparently people also think it's quite silly and not that effective as you're
- 1:06:32just kind of driving to the grocery store and you can buy, sold separately,
- 1:06:37regular circular steering wheel that's been tried and true for decades.
- 1:06:41However, if you're looking to replace your yoke I guess they're
- 1:06:45backordered because they're sold out.
- 1:06:47Um, how about you head on down to OG Racing and pick up yourself
- 1:06:51a nice Momo steering wheel?
- 1:06:52That's okay, because all the Model Ys where the steering wheel has come
- 1:06:56off in their driver's hands, you can just pick those up on eBay, I'm sure.
- 1:07:00I wonder if you could even, like, take a Aftermarket steering
- 1:07:03wheel and put it on a Tesla.
- 1:07:05Not without the airbag situation, right?
- 1:07:07So that's the problem with all that.
- 1:07:08It wouldn't, yeah, it wouldn't pass any type of state safety.
- 1:07:11But I bet it's not even, I'm like, I wouldn't be surprised if there's some sort
- 1:07:14of like special hub that's only for Tesla.
- 1:07:18Even that racing Tesla that we saw at Emra last year still had
- 1:07:22the stock steering wheel in it.
- 1:07:24Because to your point, there's a lot of things like, you know, you have to have
- 1:07:26your hands on the wheel for the autopilot.
- 1:07:29So I'm sure even if you don't use that stuff, it still probably
- 1:07:32freaks the car out and the software if you don't have the wheel.
- 1:07:35So here is one instance where I wholeheartedly advocate
- 1:07:39for changing vehicles.
- 1:07:41You've got a Tesla, you need a new steering wheel,
- 1:07:43just get a new fucking car.
- 1:07:46It's appropriate in this one instance.
- 1:07:50Well, you know, what is not appropriate is the use of the interior cameras.
- 1:07:55It's not just the interior cameras, it's the exterior cameras, because
- 1:07:59when it's like, oh, there's video from within my house of myself
- 1:08:03naked looking past a window.
- 1:08:07Uh.
- 1:08:08That's not interior camera.
- 1:08:10Yeah.
- 1:08:10You didn't hear about this?
- 1:08:11Apparently all the cameras on the Teslas have been recorded.
- 1:08:14It's like how you got the Amazon echo.
- 1:08:16You got to put that little sticker on your webcam, on your laptop, you know?
- 1:08:20So the government, it's called electrical.
- 1:08:23I have a yellow post it note with a smiley face, you know, so the
- 1:08:26government ain't looking at you topless, sitting at your computer all day.
- 1:08:30I don't know.
- 1:08:31Same thing here with the Tesla's, the cameras apparently are always
- 1:08:33on and they're always recording.
- 1:08:35And so if you're the dude or dudette.
- 1:08:38Back in wherever, watching the video footage, you're getting the show, maybe.
- 1:08:43No, it's like that movie with Robin Williams.
- 1:08:45You remember One Hour Photo?
- 1:08:47Oh, God.
- 1:08:48It's like super creepy.
- 1:08:49That's the kind of people that are into this stuff, right?
- 1:08:52I mean, I don't know, but I don't think they were trying to be creepy, but
- 1:08:56it's hard because I think I've heard of reports Where that camera actually
- 1:09:02caught somebody trying to burglarize a home or even burglarize a car and it
- 1:09:06actually caught that person on camera.
- 1:09:09So it's like, on the one hand, you make the argument of like, okay,
- 1:09:13it's a camera catching something.
- 1:09:14On the other hand, I don't think these people realized it was actually
- 1:09:17doing all this stuff and Okay, I can see the justification there.
- 1:09:21I would be more okay with it.
- 1:09:23If you could say there's an integration between ring and the Tesla or blink and
- 1:09:30the Tesla, where you could say when I arm my alarm system at the house, it
- 1:09:35can activate the cameras in the car and become part of my security system,
- 1:09:39which is actually kind of a cool idea.
- 1:09:42But that doesn't exist.
- 1:09:43What they're doing here is technically illegal.
- 1:09:47They're spying on people.
- 1:09:48They're recording them for no apparent reason without their consent.
- 1:09:53Yeah, only the government can do that.
- 1:09:55They're collecting data, you know, probably for the self driving,
- 1:09:59that information, because when the car is parked, that's a really
- 1:10:02important self driving data.
- 1:10:03The disclaimer is like when you call and you get the automated
- 1:10:06voice and it's like, this call may be recorded for quality assurance.
- 1:10:09Like that's the excuse that they're using.
- 1:10:11That's what they need.
- 1:10:12When you get in the car, they need the little zoom thing that comes
- 1:10:15up that says recording in progress.
- 1:10:17And you have to hit, got it or decline.
- 1:10:20If you hit decline, you can't move the car.
- 1:10:22Exactly.
- 1:10:22Here's another instance where I say, if you've got a problem with your Tesla,
- 1:10:26just go ahead and sell it for doge.
- 1:10:28Yes.
- 1:10:28Sell it for dogue.
- 1:10:29I mean, they're capturing all this footage.
- 1:10:32This is all footage that you can't see.
- 1:10:34So they're capturing footage of you that you'll never, you cannot verify.
- 1:10:37Yeah, exactly.
- 1:10:38So who knows what they got?
- 1:10:40And that part is creepy.
- 1:10:41And then them sharing it across work email, be like, look at this dingus.
- 1:10:45Oh my God.
- 1:10:45I can see his dingus.
- 1:10:46Oh, look at this girl's tits.
- 1:10:49Oh my God.
- 1:10:50She really needs to close her windows.
- 1:10:52Makes me wonder how good is the zoom on the cameras?
- 1:10:55Are they able to see other sensitive information?
- 1:10:57Can they really spy on you?
- 1:10:59Well, cybersecurity soapbox.
- 1:11:01I want to hear it.
- 1:11:02No, no, we're going to park that for another day.
- 1:11:04Let's do it.
- 1:11:05I want to know, but here's the other thing.
- 1:11:07So if those cars are recording.
- 1:11:09In the privacy of your home, what are they recording in public?
- 1:11:13Uh, you know what, as I changed lanes around the Tesla the other
- 1:11:17day, I was like, Hmm, so are you just recording me right now?
- 1:11:21And you wonder, and then what if your car was seized because it was at the
- 1:11:26location of a crime and then the footage could be recalled from Tesla, because
- 1:11:31The kit 2000 is recording everything that it sees back at Tesla headquarters.
- 1:11:36So what if your car is suddenly involved in like a murder investigation?
- 1:11:40You weren't there.
- 1:11:41I mean, your alibi is that you weren't there.
- 1:11:43They can prove that, but your car was, and now it's going to be subpoenaed.
- 1:11:47I mean, think about that.
- 1:11:48And it is a slippery slope.
- 1:11:50But in this modern day and age, if you go out in public and don't think
- 1:11:53you're being recorded by something at any point, you're kind of delusional
- 1:11:57because you're always being recorded.
- 1:11:59But there's a.
- 1:11:59Problem legally, because there's such a thing as consent and in certain
- 1:12:03states, if you're being recorded, you had to have given consent to that.
- 1:12:07So even if they are recording you, I don't think in none of that could be used.
- 1:12:11It's all garbage.
- 1:12:13I didn't give consent for you to spy on me and record what I was saying or what
- 1:12:16I can go out and commit murders again.
- 1:12:18Well, no, but, but the point is like, I don't know that.
- 1:12:22It could go that far.
- 1:12:23The point is, Elon is watching.
- 1:12:25That's all we know.
- 1:12:26What he's doing while he's watching.
- 1:12:28I see it.
- 1:12:28Like, do you guys remember the Watchmen where Ozymandias is
- 1:12:32sitting in front of all the screens?
- 1:12:34I just had that same vision of him sitting with like a hundred
- 1:12:38monitors and like just seeing.
- 1:12:39And he's in a throne with a cape.
- 1:12:42That's Elon.
- 1:12:43He's got, what's her name?
- 1:12:44And the child that's just.
- 1:12:45Characters and not a real name.
- 1:12:47His name's Kevin.
- 1:12:48Yeah.
- 1:12:48Right.
- 1:12:48Rufus dollar sign, asterix pound sign L seven two five nine six decimal point.
- 1:12:54Start eight 32.
- 1:12:55592.
- 1:12:56Musk, but they call him Kev like Ev like Evie.
- 1:13:02And their car lineup is sexy.
- 1:13:05Elon versus the world.
- 1:13:07Let's go there.
- 1:13:08Now we're cancelling NPR.
- 1:13:10Like, seriously?
- 1:13:12It's like the most government sponsored news outlet that ever existed, so.
- 1:13:16It's like the people that don't listen to our Patreon outro on the show.
- 1:13:20Do you not realize NPR exists at the behest of what's her face, who
- 1:13:25is the wife of Ronald McDonald, the hamburger happy clown?
- 1:13:28Well, you know, like 3 percent of NPR's funding does come from
- 1:13:32political backing, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:13:35Even though every year they do their NPR telethon for like
- 1:13:38a week straight to get money.
- 1:13:40Super annoying too.
- 1:13:41Again, most of the money comes from the McDonald's Joan B.
- 1:13:45Kroc.
- 1:13:46That's her name, right?
- 1:13:47At the behest of Joan B.
- 1:13:48Kroc.
- 1:13:49Who?
- 1:13:50She was the wife of the McDonald's founder.
- 1:13:52You never watched that on Netflix?
- 1:13:53Oh, Kroc with a K.
- 1:13:54I don't know, I was thinking Kroc with a C.
- 1:13:56Yeah, Ray Kroc's wife.
- 1:13:57Exactly.
- 1:13:58The McDonald's guy.
- 1:13:58Ronald McDonald, the hamburger happy clown.
- 1:14:00Jokes aside, everybody's always said not popular radio, whatever.
- 1:14:04I find Except during the Trump administration that their reporting
- 1:14:08has always been very neutral.
- 1:14:10I stopped listening to NPR during that time, not because
- 1:14:13I'm a fan one way or the other.
- 1:14:14I just thought I need to just stop listening to the news period.
- 1:14:17Like it was just too much for me to handle.
- 1:14:20It is what it is.
- 1:14:21I guess Elon's cancelling NPR and NPR's cancelling their Twitter account.
- 1:14:26Well, I guess a lot of people are going to cancel their Twitter
- 1:14:28accounts since they're now unverified.
- 1:14:29And now we can have Chad GPT pretend that they're like Oprah on Twitter.
- 1:14:33And Twitter's going to a pay model soon.
- 1:14:35And like, it's like, who cares?
- 1:14:36Twitter's dead, isn't it?
- 1:14:37I was like, who cares?
- 1:14:38Not yet, but he's trying to grind it into the ground.
- 1:14:40I think trying to roll it into the everything app that does everything,
- 1:14:44but does nothing at the same time.
- 1:14:46And in other Tesla news, they've like slashed their prices again.
- 1:14:50And I think what came out today is like their.
- 1:14:54Sales or something is down 20 percent versus No, last year,
- 1:14:59they have never been down.
- 1:15:01They have sold all the vehicles they have made.
- 1:15:05Just one of those things where Elon Musk is buying all the inventory
- 1:15:09just so that he can show the numbers.
- 1:15:11Yeah, right.
- 1:15:11Exactly.
- 1:15:12Uh, so many games.
- 1:15:1320 percent drop in net income.
- 1:15:15That was the thing.
- 1:15:16They're still holding on to those carbon credits that
- 1:15:18Chrysler doesn't need anymore.
- 1:15:20This is like the fifth or sixth time that they've, oh, here's a couple
- 1:15:23thousand dollars less, a couple thousand dollars less on the price of the cars.
- 1:15:26You're only going to do that if you're not selling.
- 1:15:28Right.
- 1:15:29Inventory.
- 1:15:30Exactly.
- 1:15:30Your demand is low.
- 1:15:32Because if you're still selling.
- 1:15:34You're gonna keep your price high.
- 1:15:36It's basic economics, supply versus demand, right?
- 1:15:38But then at the same time you hear how like, they've sold more than ever!
- 1:15:42It's like, okay.
- 1:15:44I've sold more than ever, but I lost money.
- 1:15:47Yeah, it's a good business model there.
- 1:15:50Ah, my expectations are lowered once again.
- 1:15:53I don't know, isn't this old?
- 1:15:54Didn't we hear about this a long time ago?
- 1:15:56Or is this another person who put the world's largest Conestoga
- 1:16:00wagon wheels on a Tesla?
- 1:16:02The one person did it on a Hellcat.
- 1:16:05Oh, that's what I was confused by.
- 1:16:07I think this is the same guy.
- 1:16:09It's the same guy, Whistling Diesel on YouTube.
- 1:16:12Not that I'm trying to give him more publicity than he already needs.
- 1:16:15Let's just not talk about this.
- 1:16:16This is also the same idiot that sawed that mirror off of the Ferrari, which
- 1:16:20we were talking about on Discord.
- 1:16:22So this guy is over the top as mountain man, Dan likes to
- 1:16:25call him a, he's a shock jock.
- 1:16:27There ever was one.
- 1:16:28And he basically puts those stupid wagon wheels, even bigger than the
- 1:16:33ones he had on the challenger Hellcat on a Tesla and flips it upside down.
- 1:16:38And then he's all like.
- 1:16:39Your move, Elon!
- 1:16:41Your move to do fucking what?
- 1:16:42Right?
- 1:16:43I'm like, what are you proving here?
- 1:16:44That, yeah, you can drive a car upside down?
- 1:16:46And then use a giant crane to flip it over?
- 1:16:50And you have to drive it in reverse to go forward.
- 1:16:53So, yeah.
- 1:16:55And you could have done that with a metal And it doesn't steer worth a shit.
- 1:16:58It goes straight.
- 1:16:59You're like, what?
- 1:17:01Of course it can't steer because there's zero turning radius.
- 1:17:04Because as soon as you turn the thing, the frickin nine
- 1:17:06foot wide wheel hits the door.
- 1:17:08That's what happened with the Hellcat.
- 1:17:10It, like, destroyed the car.
- 1:17:11Oh, yeah, 100 percent it did.
- 1:17:13It was awful.
- 1:17:13I felt so bad.
- 1:17:14And that was a brand new Hellcat, too.
- 1:17:16Pissed me off.
- 1:17:17And every car he touches, he destroys.
- 1:17:19And the bigger question I have is Where is he getting them from?
- 1:17:22Thank you.
- 1:17:23Where is he getting the money to afford this stuff?
- 1:17:25YouTube.
- 1:17:26Yeah, but the YouTube pay models If you think you're going to become a
- 1:17:30millionaire on YouTube, got news for you.
- 1:17:33Like the payout structures are awful.
- 1:17:35You have to have like a jillion views a second, and then
- 1:17:38they pay you like 10 bucks.
- 1:17:39Really?
- 1:17:40Why do you care?
- 1:17:41Screw that guy.
- 1:17:44Lowered expectation.
- 1:17:45Well, It's that time that we go down south and talk about alligators and beer.
- 1:18:07Birdman.
- 1:18:08And alligators drinking beer.
- 1:18:09That's right, beer drowning alligators.
- 1:18:12So last month we talked about the new Netflix series called And I vowed to
- 1:18:18you guys that I was going to watch it.
- 1:18:20And as promised, I did.
- 1:18:21I binged it.
- 1:18:22I watched every episode despite the previews that show you the
- 1:18:27raccoon Aquanet blowtorch and all the other stuff that's going on.
- 1:18:31It is not what you think it is.
- 1:18:33It's not a Florida man putting wagon wheels on a Tesla and driving around.
- 1:18:37Nope.
- 1:18:37Nope.
- 1:18:37Nope.
- 1:18:38So it is definitely a drama.
- 1:18:41It's dark.
- 1:18:42It's like a mobster type of thing.
- 1:18:44So I think Bateman produces it.
- 1:18:46So he did Ozarks.
- 1:18:48Correct.
- 1:18:49And so it has that Ozarks feel to it, right?
- 1:18:51It is a little gritty at times.
- 1:18:53The cast is interesting.
- 1:18:55Anthony La Paglia plays the father of the Florida man.
- 1:18:59Some hilarity ensues.
- 1:19:01There is some stupid stuff that happens.
- 1:19:03The most entertaining Florida man esque as we like to report it on this show
- 1:19:09is with the news reporter and it's usually in the background of the scene
- 1:19:13and she'll be reporting upon like the stuff that we talk about, Florida man
- 1:19:16goes on golf course and crashes in the telephone pole and 20 miles an hour and
- 1:19:19blows up his car and an alligator eats him, you know, all that kind of stuff.
- 1:19:22And it, and so that's in the background.
- 1:19:25And then there is another sort of ancillary character in the show that pops
- 1:19:29up and it all starts with him trying to bring a gun into Florida and buy a gun
- 1:19:34and he's a cop and like all this and he ends up like your typical Florida man
- 1:19:39that we talk about in these stories.
- 1:19:41He's like he's wearing his basketball jersey and he's got Crocs and
- 1:19:45he's like beat up and he's dirty.
- 1:19:47And he shows up at one point on a mini bike that he stole.
- 1:19:50That character sort of epitomizes all the things that we joke about,
- 1:19:54but it's not the theme of the show.
- 1:19:56The show is to your point, Tanya, more like Ozarks.
- 1:20:00It's drug running and they're looking for gold.
- 1:20:03And there's a mobster involved, people backstabbing each other.
- 1:20:06It's not bad.
- 1:20:07It's actually excellent.
- 1:20:08I highly recommend watching it.
- 1:20:10It was a great couple hours of these eight episodes.
- 1:20:14By all means, watch it.
- 1:20:15It's actually quite good, but don't go into the expectations of it being
- 1:20:20like we joked about a continuation of my name is Earl because it's not, it
- 1:20:24sounds like a Florida man origin story.
- 1:20:26It's sort of click baity in the sense that they called it Florida man to
- 1:20:31be sort of like tiger King, where you want to jump in there and I'm
- 1:20:34like, I got to watch Florida, man.
- 1:20:35They could have called it something else.
- 1:20:37Like, I don't want to say it's like Magnum PI.
- 1:20:39It's more like in that genre of.
- 1:20:42He was a cop and like all this stuff happens to him and it's
- 1:20:46like a series of unfortunate events and they're not that funny.
- 1:20:49You know, there are things that happen to him and he's, you know, he's trying
- 1:20:52to work back from that, you know, a rose by any other name is still the same, but
- 1:20:56yeah, the Florida man thing gets you, but I recommend G you guys got to watch it.
- 1:21:00It's on my list.
- 1:21:01I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
- 1:21:03Got to finish up.
- 1:21:03Love is blind.
- 1:21:04Love Island.
- 1:21:05Is that what you said?
- 1:21:05You're watching?
- 1:21:06No.
- 1:21:08You know what?
- 1:21:08I thought it was going to be light on Florida man.
- 1:21:11And at the 11th hour, I was like, let me look again.
- 1:21:14And you just Google search for Florida man and see what comes up.
- 1:21:18Oh, that's what I always do.
- 1:21:22I didn't know it was a secret.
- 1:21:25No, I kid you not.
- 1:21:26I had a meeting at work.
- 1:21:27Somehow this came up and people didn't know if you just put Florida man
- 1:21:32or Florida man stories into Google.
- 1:21:35What it gives you back three people in the meeting didn't know.
- 1:21:37And they did it.
- 1:21:38And their faces like, Oh, you just do Florida man, click news.
- 1:21:43So it filters down and you just got headline after headline after.
- 1:21:46Oh yeah.
- 1:21:47They were beside themselves.
- 1:21:48And then the one guy just busted out laughing.
- 1:21:50I think he got like to the bottom of it and he saw something that
- 1:21:53got his attention and he's like.
- 1:21:55Oh my God, I didn't know this was a thing.
- 1:21:57And I'm like, what kind of rock have you been living under?
- 1:22:00I mean, you can do it with it.
- 1:22:01You can do any state, Maryland man, Texas man, Michigan man,
- 1:22:04Michigan woman, California woman, you know, do whatever you want and
- 1:22:08just filter all the news headlines.
- 1:22:09The Florida man is always the most entertaining.
- 1:22:12It's a special breed.
- 1:22:14It really is.
- 1:22:15And we'll see that here.
- 1:22:16I, they got some nuggets.
- 1:22:17I wasn't expecting them.
- 1:22:18But before we go to Florida, we're going to go up into the great Northwest.
- 1:22:22I haven't read any of these.
- 1:22:23I'm going in blind.
- 1:22:24For an Oregon man.
- 1:22:25Oh, in celebration of Herb Day, we're going to Oregon.
- 1:22:29Oregon.
- 1:22:30Oregano.
- 1:22:30Well, speaking of things that are green, this dude decided to Wipe
- 1:22:36out all his family's bank account, 200, 000, drive down the highway,
- 1:22:41and literally make it rain 100.
- 1:22:45Hundo's out the window!
- 1:22:47It was Hyundai?
- 1:22:48It was a Chevy Malibu.
- 1:22:50Ah, B.
- 1:22:51Chaos kind of ensued because when people realized there were hundos
- 1:22:55flying around, everybody was pulling over and like collecting all the money.
- 1:22:59What possesses a person to do that?
- 1:23:01He wanted to share his money generously with others.
- 1:23:05Except you just ripped off your There must be more to that story.
- 1:23:08Nonetheless, if you were in Oregon that day on highway Something
- 1:23:13or other, you might have had a little early present there.
- 1:23:18We'll call that a tax return.
- 1:23:20Yeah, this is like when the beer truck turns over.
- 1:23:23Yes, exactly.
- 1:23:24scrambling to get cases of beer.
- 1:23:25When it's Bud Light, nobody wants it.
- 1:23:27That's the problem.
- 1:23:28They're like, I don't even want to clean this up.
- 1:23:30There's a lot of people out there with no taste.
- 1:23:33It's half the calories in the same taste, Brad.
- 1:23:35Which is, like I said, no taste.
- 1:23:37So now we'll go to Florida.
- 1:23:39You've got to love it when it starts with only in Florida, man spotted riding
- 1:23:44jet ski motorcycle in Cape Corral.
- 1:23:49Go ahead and click that link and check the picture out.
- 1:23:51He is literally on a jet ski converted to a motorcycle.
- 1:23:55Why, why is this a problem?
- 1:24:01Well, apparently the police would offer that it probably is illegal.
- 1:24:07Not having a license plate, not having headlights, not having a
- 1:24:11rear view mirror or turn signals.
- 1:24:13So, so jet skis have headlights.
- 1:24:15You can have a headlight.
- 1:24:16Well, we don't know if this one has a headlight.
- 1:24:18It's probably as safe as if it was a regular motorcycle.
- 1:24:24It's amphibious.
- 1:24:25He did the Top Gear challenge and made an amphibious vehicle.
- 1:24:29He built this himself.
- 1:24:30I gave him props.
- 1:24:31And him and his, his purple backpack.
- 1:24:33I can imagine how this chase scene should have played out.
- 1:24:37All he had to do was find a boat ramp.
- 1:24:39He'd be gone.
- 1:24:40Well, not even that.
- 1:24:41Wrap the throttle, bang a hard right and go off into the swamp.
- 1:24:45Yes.
- 1:24:46This guy's got it figured out.
- 1:24:48This is the ultimate escape vehicle for Florida.
- 1:24:51Wow.
- 1:24:54You know what?
- 1:24:55He could be onto something.
- 1:24:56He truly needs to make them amphibious and he could be onto something.
- 1:25:01He could have a business.
- 1:25:02I love the detail that was put into this.
- 1:25:05Do you see the exhaust tip, how it comes out the back of
- 1:25:09like that fairing back there?
- 1:25:11It's just, he spent a lot of time making this work.
- 1:25:15This is amazing.
- 1:25:16It's that Florida man ingenuity.
- 1:25:17I love the backpack and the matching hat.
- 1:25:20He's going off to school riding his jet ski.
- 1:25:22I mean, he had a jet ski and he had a motorcycle and he had one too many joints.
- 1:25:28Let's put them together.
- 1:25:29No, he was talking to some friends and God knows what they said.
- 1:25:32And he goes, hold my beer.
- 1:25:33And then this came out.
- 1:25:34Oh my God.
- 1:25:35So he had a jet ski that he needed to transport.
- 1:25:38But he only had a motorcycle.
- 1:25:39So he said, all right, well, if I got to move my jet ski and I
- 1:25:43got a motorcycle, I'm going to move them both at the same time.
- 1:25:46Hold my beer.
- 1:25:47I'm a bear.
- 1:25:48But speaking of Florida man, ingenuity, take a look at this next one.
- 1:25:52And let me know, would you buy?
- 1:25:56This Ford Crown Victoria convertible.
- 1:25:58What the hell?
- 1:26:00Now, I look at this, and the second picture, he's got a smirk,
- 1:26:04shit eating grin, I love it.
- 1:26:05He's like, I know what I got.
- 1:26:06No lowballs, I know what I got.
- 1:26:09Why is the air filter routed with like a 5 inch PVC pipe
- 1:26:14up from the front of the hood?
- 1:26:16Up to the dashboard!
- 1:26:18This vehicle, too, can go in water, so therefore, if you look
- 1:26:23at it, he made it look like a boat.
- 1:26:25It has a boat windshield, and that's a snorkel so that when he goes in the water,
- 1:26:30he doesn't suck water into the motor.
- 1:26:32Goddamn, you're right.
- 1:26:33My favorite part is the temp tag.
- 1:26:36He just registered this vehicle.
- 1:26:38Better than the shit eating grin.
- 1:26:40Better than, obviously.
- 1:26:41All lack of safety on this.
- 1:26:43Cause if you look at the seatbelt mounts, it's covered with foam, right?
- 1:26:47I don't even know how that's bolted.
- 1:26:48I would argue that the jet ski motorcycle is safer than this.
- 1:26:52All of this is absolutely amazing because it is almost ready for a lemons race.
- 1:26:58And at first I thought, maybe, maybe just, maybe this is a lemons car.
- 1:27:04You're right, actually.
- 1:27:05So it is part of the Gambler 500, Florida, which is like an off
- 1:27:11road rally, blah, blah, blah, two, three, four day challenge.
- 1:27:17And basically, yes, it's like off roading lemons.
- 1:27:21But, did you scroll down to the picture where he has his
- 1:27:26shit eating grin on his face?
- 1:27:27Did you look at the logo?
- 1:27:29Heh heh heh heh heh.
- 1:27:31That palm tree's got boobs!
- 1:27:34That or truck nuts.
- 1:27:35I haven't figured out which yet.
- 1:27:36And I love the fact that it's pissing rain on him.
- 1:27:44Everything about this is awesome.
- 1:27:47Okay.
- 1:27:47Our last Florida man, and there's a water theme here.
- 1:27:51I'm going to die.
- 1:27:52Like my stomach hurts.
- 1:27:53Like this is going to, it can't get any worse.
- 1:27:56Oh, it gets better.
- 1:27:5723 year old man in his Nissan Sentra, crossed the center line, collided with
- 1:28:02a semi truck, so it had an accident.
- 1:28:05First thought, you have an accident.
- 1:28:06Get naked, get naked and run into the swamp because I'm gonna be less
- 1:28:12noticeable naked going through a swamp.
- 1:28:16I'm gonna be less noticeable as gator food.
- 1:28:19While he was looking for the jet ski motorcycle so he can get away.
- 1:28:23I think that's like step one in the Florida Man handbook.
- 1:28:28Step one, no matter what you did.
- 1:28:29Step one, get naked.
- 1:28:31You gotta reduce the drag and save some weight so you can run faster.
- 1:28:35Simplify and add lightness.
- 1:28:37Simplify and add nudity.
- 1:28:41Lord of Man motto.
- 1:28:42Harlan Chapman had it right.
- 1:28:44This guy is brave.
- 1:28:46Brave?
- 1:28:47Brave is the word you use?
- 1:28:48Yes!
- 1:28:48Yes!
- 1:28:49I don't know that I would use that particular adjective to describe this guy.
- 1:28:55The other ones were taken, but Brave, I say, because he got naked
- 1:29:00and jumped into a swamp at 8.
- 1:29:0130 PM!
- 1:29:03Ooh!
- 1:29:04You can't see what shit's out there?
- 1:29:06What swamp thing's there to eat you?
- 1:29:08Ooh, that's He got He got in so deep, apparently he was happy when the cops
- 1:29:13found him, cause he wanted to get the F out of there, but I don't even think
- 1:29:17scary swampland is it in the water?
- 1:29:20Is it something about when the water evaporates and goes into the air
- 1:29:25that people just go crazy in Florida?
- 1:29:28You know, they say it's because of the water that New York bagels are so good.
- 1:29:32So I could see something that Florida causing all these people figuring it out.
- 1:29:37It's from all the drug running in the eighties.
- 1:29:40There's so much cocaine in the water.
- 1:29:44It's just everywhere.
- 1:29:45It's like that cocaine bear thing.
- 1:29:47You see, Oh my God.
- 1:29:50They should just rename Florida.
- 1:29:52Okay.
- 1:29:53It was cougar town.
- 1:29:54Now, now cocaine town.
- 1:29:56So now it's time to go behind the pit wall and talk about next week's news.
- 1:30:01Brad and Tanya are resident Formula One experts.
- 1:30:05What has been going on?
- 1:30:06There was a race.
- 1:30:07It ended poorly.
- 1:30:08You're welcome.
- 1:30:10Mic drop.
- 1:30:11Depends on your perspective, but that was a cluster.
- 1:30:14Oh my God, the end of that.
- 1:30:16So many wrecks.
- 1:30:17Apparently they let a bunch of club racers out in an F1 track.
- 1:30:20Yes.
- 1:30:21It was Romper Room.
- 1:30:23Who even won that one?
- 1:30:24Verstappen.
- 1:30:25Verstappen, Hamilton, Alonso.
- 1:30:28And then Alonso, he lost five spots and had to give it to Russell.
- 1:30:32He was given a five second penalty, took him off the podium
- 1:30:34and put Russell on the podium.
- 1:30:36And then about an hour later, that penalty was reversed.
- 1:30:39And then they put Alonzo back on the podium, then Russell off the podium.
- 1:30:43Was that that race or the race before?
- 1:30:45That was Australia.
- 1:30:46Russell crashed.
- 1:30:47He was crashed out, or his car broke.
- 1:30:48He was DNF'd in Australia.
- 1:30:50Was he?
- 1:30:51I think that was the race before, because Alonzo also came in third in Saudi.
- 1:30:55I think that was the one that had the, uh, podium.
- 1:30:58I retract my statement.
- 1:30:58Because Russell came in fourth there, but he DNF'd in Australia, because like
- 1:31:02Sorry Mark Hewitt, I retract my statement.
- 1:31:03Eight cars DNF'd and like six of those eight was because
- 1:31:08they crashed into each other.
- 1:31:10Driving in Florida.
- 1:31:11It was bad.
- 1:31:12It was romper room.
- 1:31:13But we've been on spring break for the last couple weeks.
- 1:31:16So there has been no races since April 2nd.
- 1:31:19And the next upcoming race is the 30th in Azerbaijan.
- 1:31:23You know, I'm really glad that they get a break.
- 1:31:25You know, they worked so hard.
- 1:31:27They really deserve a spring break and a summer break.
- 1:31:30I'm so happy for them to get quick respite from all the hard work that they put in.
- 1:31:35They are athletes.
- 1:31:36Let's get, I know, I know.
- 1:31:38I'm, I'm, I say that in jest, but whatever.
- 1:31:40So there's some interesting changes happening now that formula W.
- 1:31:45has been on pause.
- 1:31:46Formula One, the FIA made an announcement that there's a new Formula
- 1:31:50Academy for women drivers coming on.
- 1:31:53They've got five teams already lined up in there.
- 1:31:56I think the inaugural season opener race is coming up in Austria on 28th, 29th.
- 1:32:03So it's right ahead of the Azerbaijan men's Formula One race on April 30th.
- 1:32:07And this program is actually being managed.
- 1:32:12The director of this is Susie Wolf.
- 1:32:14And if Wolf sounds familiar, it should, because that is Toto Wolf's
- 1:32:18wife, the principal for Mercedes.
- 1:32:20The most overpaid person in Formula One right now.
- 1:32:22I mean, he's not having a good year, but we'll see if they can turn it around.
- 1:32:26He's still getting paid.
- 1:32:27Good year or bad year.
- 1:32:28He's still making that doge coin.
- 1:32:30I mean, you know.
- 1:32:32We've been talking a lot this season about WRC and at the time of this
- 1:32:38recording here on IRF day, we are just ahead of the Croatia rally, but that
- 1:32:44also comes at the heels of some very sad news and a statement from Hyundai
- 1:32:49Motorsports on April the 13th, 2023 Hyundai Motorsport is deeply saddened
- 1:32:54to confirm that WRC driver, Craig Breen, lost his life during an accident during
- 1:32:59pre event testing for the Croatia rally.
- 1:33:02Co driver James Fulton was unharmed in the incident that occurred just
- 1:33:06after midday local time on the 13th and Hyundai Motorsports sends its
- 1:33:11sincerest condolences to Craig's family, friends, and his many fans.
- 1:33:15Hyundai Motorsports We'll make no further comments at this time as WRC
- 1:33:19fans, you know, we've been talking about Craig and his progress and some
- 1:33:22awesome results he's had at the last three rounds of the 2023 season of WRC.
- 1:33:27And he was one of our hopefuls.
- 1:33:29He was definitely not an underdog, a contender to take the crown this year.
- 1:33:33And I think we're all shocked and saddened by the sudden news and
- 1:33:37sudden passing of Craig Breen.
- 1:33:39And I think I saw something where Toyota was only going to or something like that.
- 1:33:44To kind of limit the amount of points that they could take away from the race
- 1:33:47and some sort of show of solidarity.
- 1:33:50Yeah.
- 1:33:50Missing man type of thing.
- 1:33:51Yeah.
- 1:33:52Because Hyundai is down a driver.
- 1:33:53Now they've just got Terry Neuville.
- 1:33:55They haven't said who's going to fill his spot.
- 1:33:58It is a little quick to just jump into that, you know, maybe
- 1:34:01one of the backup drivers.
- 1:34:03Well, again, we won't have results from Croatia or any additional news
- 1:34:07until next month's drive through.
- 1:34:09So we'll be paying attention to that to see what the changes are for Hyundai.
- 1:34:12But again, all of us deeply saddened by the passing of Craig Breen.
- 1:34:17Motorsports.
- 1:34:18History being kept alive by our friends at the international

- 1:35:57The description shows closed off mountain roads, closed off tunnel, drag strip.
- 1:36:03Airport runs police escort need.
- 1:36:06I say more.
- 1:36:06That sounds like a pretty awesome event to me.
- 1:36:08Where are the police escorting you to probably across state lines.
- 1:36:12Get out of my state.
- 1:36:14Also, the golden gears, 50th anniversary car and truck show is

- 1:37:0528th at, you guessed it, Pocono Raceway.
- 1:37:08And tons more events like this and all their details are available
- 1:37:11over at collectorcardguide.
- 1:37:12net.
- 1:37:13Now it's time for our HPDJunkie.
- 1:37:15com Trackside Report.
- 1:37:17What's going on here in early spring in our area?
- 1:37:20Speedo de Mayo event with HOD Southeast is on Friday, May the 5th.
- 1:37:25It's a one day event at Florida International Rally and Motorsports
- 1:37:29Park, also known as The Firm.
- 1:37:31Like the movie?
- 1:37:32John Grisham will be there.
- 1:37:33For 189.
- 1:37:35So there's some updates here for HOD Northeast that came across our desk.
- 1:37:38There's a couple of new events that they've added to the schedule on
- 1:37:41June the 3rd, they're going to be at Pocono and they're hosting a one day
- 1:37:45event on the 21 turn mega course 3.
- 1:37:5051 mile mega course at Pocono it's where they use.
- 1:37:53Every bit of the track, except for NASCAR turn three.
- 1:37:56So that's all the infields and two thirds of the NASCAR oval.
- 1:37:59We've done that configuration several times before.
- 1:38:01If you've never done it before, it is the biggest, baddest configuration at Pocono
- 1:38:06and it is definitely worth trying out.
- 1:38:08And usually at the end of that day, they will open up the circuit and
- 1:38:11allow you to run the tricky triangle.
- 1:38:13So if you want to get your NASCAR fantasy on, that's a good time to do it.
- 1:38:17There's also an unmuffled day at Lime Rock.
- 1:38:19It's two half day open track sessions at Lime Rock on
- 1:38:23Friday, June the 9th from 1 p.
- 1:38:25m.
- 1:38:25to 5 p.
- 1:38:26m.
- 1:38:26And on Saturday, June the 10th from 9 a.
- 1:38:29m.
- 1:38:29to 1 p.
- 1:38:30m.
- 1:38:30But again, the best of all for these two half day events is that
- 1:38:33there are no sound restrictions.
- 1:38:35So you don't have to worry about getting thrown out of
- 1:38:37Lime Rock because your Miatas.
- 1:38:39With its stock exhaust is too loud.
- 1:38:41At the same time, HOD has partnered with track masters to offer discounted rates
- 1:38:46for all HOD novice and intermediate level drivers for three, two day
- 1:38:51events at Watkins Glen in 2023.
- 1:38:54So you'll see familiar faces to help ensure you have a great Monday,
- 1:38:57Tuesday at these track events and make sure to wave to Kenny Ivner
- 1:39:01as he points you by in his Miata.
- 1:39:02More details on that.
- 1:39:04If you check out hooked on driving, you can also.
- 1:39:07Register on Motorsports Reg, take advantage of this current offering
- 1:39:11and opportunity of events at Pocono, Lime Rock, and at Watkins Glen.
- 1:39:15And you can save 50 on any Trackmasters two day HBD event as well.
- 1:39:22Again, we want to remind you as a thank you for everyone being loyal
- 1:39:26supporters of GTM and fans of break fix.
- 1:39:28Mike and Mona from hooked on driving are offering a discount
- 1:39:31all season on their HPD events.
- 1:39:33You can use code break fix 23 to receive a discount on your
- 1:39:36event registration at checkout.
- 1:39:38So thank you all again for being supporters of our efforts and tune in
- 1:39:41throughout the year for more promotions.
- 1:39:43So does that discount only apply to HOD Northeast and does not
- 1:39:47apply to HOD Southeast with a.
- 1:39:49Steve.
- 1:39:50So I have heard from Steve Furman that the code does work or is
- 1:39:54supposed to work on Southeast events.
- 1:39:56That was sort of the original plan.
- 1:39:58I haven't had anybody test it to confirm.
- 1:40:01I know that people have used our code for the Northeast events, so it does work.
- 1:40:04But if it doesn't work for some reason, please reach out to us and let us know.
- 1:40:08All right.
- 1:40:08Some news from SCCA.
- 1:40:10There's a lot of people that are sort of upset about this.
- 1:40:12There's some changes coming to our favorite registration
- 1:40:15platform, motorsportsreg.
- 1:40:17com.
- 1:40:18Payment policies have been changed and they've announced that they're
- 1:40:22introducing an added fee to processing of every event entry through their system.
- 1:40:27So this applies to not only SCCA, but other.
- 1:40:30Events that use MSR like track days, like NASA, whoever, it's not that
- 1:40:35anybody's leaving the platform, but they just want to make you aware that
- 1:40:38there's now an experiential fee that will be added to people's registration.
- 1:40:44And it's a whopping 2.
- 1:40:47So there's some people that are very upset about that.
- 1:40:49Bake it into the cost, whatever you want to do.
- 1:40:53Honestly, I think Ticketmaster charges a lot more for their convenience
- 1:40:56fees and experiential fees.
- 1:40:58So two bucks isn't so bad at the end of the day, but yeah, just be aware
- 1:41:03that they are changing this policy and it will show up and you're like, Hey,
- 1:41:07where'd this extra two bucks come from?
- 1:41:08What does it go for?
- 1:41:09But MSR has stated specifically a 2 fee is applied once and only once to
- 1:41:14all registrations with an entry fee fee registrations, such as those for
- 1:41:18volunteers, workers, instructors, crew, et cetera, are not charged and nor
- 1:41:23will volunteer registration be charged.
- 1:41:25Registrations paid entirely by credits on file are not charged the fee.
- 1:41:30So the booking fee.
- 1:41:31Can be refunded if the registration is refunded in full, the long and short
- 1:41:35of that disclaimer is that this only really applies to people that are
- 1:41:39paying full boat for an event on MSR.
- 1:41:43So those of us that are instructors, et cetera, this is pretty much moot.
- 1:41:46So, but we just wanted to bring it to your attention.
- 1:41:48Why did they feel the need to point out it's paid once and only once in what
- 1:41:53instance would it not be paid once?
- 1:41:55I don't understand.
- 1:41:56And that's misleading too.
- 1:41:57It's not like a one time membership fee.
- 1:42:01Yeah, that's what it sounds like.
- 1:42:02They make it sound like we're going to charge you one time a 2 fee.
- 1:42:05No, it's once per registration.
- 1:42:08Exactly.
- 1:42:09Exactly.
- 1:42:09So again, thank you for clarifying that Brad, because you're not getting
- 1:42:12an MSR membership of any sort.
- 1:42:14It's just a 2 fee every time you sign up for an event.
- 1:42:17Capitalism.
- 1:42:18In case you missed out, check out the other podcast
- 1:42:20episodes that aired this month.
- 1:42:22We rounded out International Women's Month with an extra episode where we
- 1:42:25chatted with a third generation SCCA club racer, Taylor Hyatt, and her
- 1:42:29plans to get more ladies on track.
- 1:42:32Kat DeLorean returned to BreakFix to introduce us to Rimac Bugatti designer
- 1:42:36Angel Guerra from Seville, Spain, who is determined to bring the steel bodied, gull
- 1:42:40winged door DMC 12 squarely into the 21st century with a next generation concept.
- 1:42:46We welcome back Steve from Everything I Learn From Movies to help us review
- 1:42:49Lamborghini, the man behind the legend.
