- 0:00Welcome to the Joe Rogan Recap and before we get going, please
- 0:03follow us right here on Spotify to make sure you get sight of
- 0:06our latest episodes in your feed.
- 0:08Today is going to be a journey. We are going way back back to
- 0:14the source code. We really are the absolute
- 0:16patient zero moments of mixed martial arts.
- 0:19That's the perfect term for it. So we're diving into The Joe
- 0:22Rogan MMA Show episode 173 and the guests are Benny the Jet
- 0:27Arcadez and William Blinky Rodriguez.
- 0:30And you know, people throw the word legends around a lot.
- 0:33All the time. But these two, I mean, they were
- 0:34doing MMA before anyone even knew what to call it.
- 0:37Exactly. If you look at the UFC today,
- 0:39it's this polished, you know, billion dollar machine, you got
- 0:42rules, weight class, doctors, all of it.
- 0:45But this deep dive takes us back to the primordial soup of the
- 0:491970's. The.
- 0:50Wild West it. Was absolutely the Wild West and
- 0:53guys like Benny and Blinky were basically inventing the sport by
- 0:56trial and error. And it sounds like error usually
- 0:58meant someone getting seriously hurt or finding yourself in a
- 1:02just a crazy situation. Or a horror film.
- 1:04Yeah, yeah, depending on how you look at it.
- 1:06What really got me about this whole thing isn't just the fight
- 1:08stories and we have some wild ones to get to.
- 1:10Hey, we do. It's the arc of it all.
- 1:12We're going to talk about how a simple misunderstanding about a
- 1:15name basically changed, striking forever.
- 1:17And how a local cobbler accidentally invented a piece of
- 1:20safety gear we all use now. Yes.
- 1:23And then we have to talk about this really profound story about
- 1:27murder and forgiveness that just completely redefines what it
- 1:31means to be a tough guy. That last part, Blinky story
- 1:34about his son, it just, it stops you in your tracks.
- 1:38It does. It takes a whole conversation
- 1:39from how to hurt people and shifts it to how to heal people.
- 1:42It's incredible. So powerful, but OK, let's set
- 1:46the scene. We need to take everyone back to
- 1:48what, 19731974? Yeah, the era of full contact
- 1:52karate to understand martial arts back then were completely
- 1:55siloed. Right, no Internet.
- 1:57No Internet, no YouTube information, just didn't travel.
- 2:00So if you were a karate guy, you fought other karate guys right?
- 2:04A boxer fought boxers. There was no real cross
- 2:06pollination of ideas. So you had all these guys, these
- 2:09black belts, who thought they were the most dangerous men on
- 2:12the planet. And maybe they were within their
- 2:14own. Rules, but they'd never actually
- 2:16been tested outside of that little.
- 2:18Box, precisely. And the whole landscape was just
- 2:20chaos. There was no PKA, the
- 2:22Professional Karate Association, none of that yet.
- 2:25Which brings us to the Hawaii fights.
- 2:27This sounds like something out of a movie.
- 2:29Benny and Blinky talk about flying to Hawaii for these
- 2:33elimination bouts. And the lack of regulation is
- 2:36just it's shocking by today's standards.
- 2:39Lack of regulation is being very polite.
- 2:40It really is. There were basically no rules on
- 2:44technique. And the big one?
- 2:46No weight divisions. None.
- 2:48Zero. You sign the contract, You
- 2:50fought whoever they told you to fight.
- 2:51And that leads to this first just terrifying story.
- 2:55Blinky Rodriguez gets his match up.
- 2:57Now, Blinky's not a big guy. No, he's a featherweight. 145
- 3:01lbs maybe. Lean quick and he's told he's
- 3:04fighting a man named Ernest White.
- 3:06OK, Ernest White is 6 foot 3 and weighs 245 lbs.
- 3:10Whoa, that's £100 difference. A full 100 lbs.
- 3:14Today, a Commission wouldn't just stop that fight.
- 3:16They'd probably pull the promoter's license.
- 3:19It's just physics at that point. It's David versus Goliath, but
- 3:23without the slingshot. And this is where you see the
- 3:25mindset of that era. Benny's in his corner.
- 3:28He's his brother-in-law. And he doesn't tell him to run.
- 3:31No, he leans in and tells him the cold, hard truth of the
- 3:34situation. He says the promoters, they want
- 3:37a spectacle. They want to see the little guy
- 3:39get smashed. If you don't knock him out, you
- 3:42will not win. Wow, so don't just survive
- 3:45against this giant. You have to completely finish
- 3:47him or they'll rob you. That's the pressure and he did
- 3:51it. Blinky 1 But that lawlessness,
- 3:54it led to some desperate moments.
- 3:57Benny tells the story about getting pinned.
- 3:59Right, because they were judo black belts.
- 4:01They understood grappling. But submissions weren't really a
- 4:03thing yet in these fights. The refs didn't know what they
- 4:05were looking at. Just one guy on top of the
- 4:07other. So Benny's pin, he's exhausted,
- 4:09he can't move, so he just, he bites the guy.
- 4:12On the chest. Right on the chest.
- 4:14The guy jumps up screaming, pointing at the bite mark on his
- 4:17PEC. The ref looks at Benny and Benny
- 4:20just shrugs and says I was getting tired.
- 4:23It's hilarious now, but you see the desperation when there are
- 4:27no rules, you do what you have to do.
- 4:30They were making it up as they went along, but maybe the
- 4:33biggest discovery, the thing that changed everything, came
- 4:37from a misunderstanding. That sounds like a comedy
- 4:39sketch. The Muy Thai incident.
- 4:41This is my favorite. It's so good.
- 4:43It perfectly shows that isolation we were talking about.
- 4:46South Benny's brother Arnold comes up to him and asks, hey,
- 4:49you want to fight a tie? A tie?
- 4:51And Benny, completely innocent, asks what's Tai?
- 4:54He thinks it's a person's name. He literally thinks the
- 4:57opponent's name is Mr. Muay Thai, so he says yeah sure, I'll
- 4:59fight him. He has no idea Muay Thai is a
- 5:02whole fighting style from Thailand.
- 5:03A style that specializes in, you know, chopping people's legs out
- 5:06from under them and throwing elbows.
- 5:08He steps in that ring thinking he's about to have a karate
- 5:10match with a guy named Tai, and then the first kick lands.
- 5:15Reality hits hard. He says his eyes bulged out of
- 5:18his forehead. You have to remember in American
- 5:21karate, then, you didn't kick the legs.
- 5:23It wasn't seen as honorable. Right.
- 5:25It was all about points above the waist, so his legs had zero
- 5:28conditioning for that kind of attack.
- 5:30They were just soft targets. He was getting chopped down like
- 5:33a tree, he said. He didn't even know they could
- 5:34use knees. He thought the guy was just
- 5:36fighting dirty. Oh, so we're brawling now?
- 5:39Exactly. He didn't realize he was up
- 5:42against a centuries old old refined martial art.
- 5:45It was a huge wake up call for the entire American scene.
- 5:49A massive hole in their game. But this is what makes Benny the
- 5:53Jet special. He didn't just get beat up and
- 5:56complain, he adapted. And that leads to an innovation
- 6:00that everyone listening probably has in their gym bag.
- 6:03The shin guard? Yep.
- 6:04Necessity is the mother of invention, right?
- 6:07So after that fight, Benny knows, OK, I have to learn how
- 6:10to block these kicks and I need to teach my students.
- 6:12But you can't just throw full power link kicks at each other
- 6:15every day. You won't be able to walk the
- 6:16ties. They were just, you know,
- 6:18kicking banana trees since they were kids to deaden the nerves.
- 6:21Or using lidocaine spray to numb their shins.
- 6:24Right. Betty didn't have time for that.
- 6:26He needed a solution now. So he goes to a cobbler, an old
- 6:30school shoe repair guy. It's.
- 6:32Such a great image. He walks in.
- 6:33Ask the guy to make these leather pads for his shins and
- 6:37the Cobblers. Confused, he asked well how are
- 6:39they going to stay on? And he suggests this brand new
- 6:42material, Velcro. Velcro.
- 6:44So Benny Urquidaz basically invents the modern martial arts
- 6:48shin guard all so he could train to fight like the Tais.
- 6:52It's an amazing story, and that one piece of gear allowed the
- 6:55score to evolve so much faster here.
- 6:58And Speaking of techniques, evolving the calf kick.
- 7:01Oh, this is a huge one in modern MMA.
- 7:04The calf kick is everywhere now it.
- 7:06Cripples people, it ends fights. But for a long time everyone
- 7:09thought it was this. Like new discovery, a new meta.
- 7:12But Benny and Blinky were doing this in the 70s, they called it,
- 7:15making the dancers flat footed. Because it hits that peroneal
- 7:19nerve right and your foot just goes dead.
- 7:20You can't bounce on your toes anymore.
- 7:22If you're fighting a guy who moves a lot, a boxer, you just
- 7:25chop the calf and suddenly they're a stationary target.
- 7:28What's so fascinating is how that technique, just it
- 7:31disappeared for a while. Why did it?
- 7:33The rules. American kickboxing came along
- 7:36and a lot of promotions had rules where you had to throw a
- 7:39certain number of kicks above the waist.
- 7:41Leg kicks were seen as, I don't know, less flashy.
- 7:44So the sport actually devolved in some ways.
- 7:47It did. It went in a different direction
- 7:48and now, 50 years later, it's come full circle.
- 7:51You have guys bringing it back and dominating with it.
- 7:54Good technique, never really dies.
- 7:56But there is one very famous story of someone not respecting
- 7:59that technique and paying a huge price for it.
- 8:01Muhammad Ali versus Antonio Ornouki, 1976.
- 8:05The weirdest super fight ever. Boxer versus wrestler.
- 8:09And Benny was there. He was fighting on the
- 8:10undercard. And because he knew about this
- 8:13stuff, about cross style fighting, he actually tried to
- 8:16warn Ali. Really.
- 8:17Yeah, he went to Ali's locker room before the fight, he said.
- 8:20Mohammed, this wrestler, he's going to go for your legs.
- 8:23He's not going to try and box you.
- 8:25And Ollie being Ollie. Just blew it off.
- 8:27I'm too fast, he can't touch me. I just didn't understand the
- 8:31threat. And the fight was, I mean, it
- 8:33was ugly to watch Enoki just lay on his back and kicked Ollie's
- 8:37legs for 15 rounds. But people forget the damage.
- 8:40Ollie's legs swelled up so bad they had to drain fluid from
- 8:43them. They got infected.
- 8:44There's a real argument that his movement that float like a
- 8:47butterfly was never the same after that night.
- 8:50Permanently damaged because he didn't respect a weapon he
- 8:52couldn't comprehend. It's a tragic lesson.
- 8:55So Benny and Blinky, they take all this knowledge they've bled
- 8:57for, and they open the Jet Center in LA.
- 9:01The Mecca of kickboxing. Joe Rogan even talks about
- 9:03training there back in 94. But for me, the most interesting
- 9:07thing about it wasn't the fighting, it was the the
- 9:10sociology of the place. The mix of people.
- 9:12Exactly. They had a group they called the
- 9:14fighting attorneys that. Sounds like a bad sitcom, right?
- 9:17But these were real high-powered lawyers, and they were in there
- 9:22sparring with actual gang members from an outreach program
- 9:25Blinky was running. That sounds like a recipe for
- 9:28disaster. You'd think so, but this is
- 9:31where their philosophy, their code, comes in.
- 9:33They called it mirroring truth. What does that mean?
- 9:37Mirroring. Truth.
- 9:38The idea is that fighting strips away your ego, your mask.
- 9:42When you're tired and getting hit, you can't pretend.
- 9:45Your real self, your fear, your anger, it comes to the surface.
- 9:49And once it's out in the. Open.
- 9:50You can deal with it. You can reprogram it.
- 9:53So the lawyer and the gang member, they realized, they both
- 9:55felt the same fear of getting hit.
- 9:57They weren't a suit and a thug anymore.
- 9:59They were just two men. It created a neutral ground
- 10:02that's incredible, but they do have some critiques of how
- 10:05modern MMA has maybe lost some of that spirit.
- 10:08Yeah, a few 1 is really practical eye pokes.
- 10:12The. Worst, it happens all the time.
- 10:13Fighters have their hands open, fingers out, if any solution is
- 10:17so simple. Curve the glove.
- 10:18Make them like mittens, like the old Everlast bag gloves.
- 10:21Make it so the hand is naturally closed.
- 10:23It's a simple design fix. But deeper than that, they miss
- 10:26the Bushido, the honor. That's the real heart of it.
- 10:29They respect the skill of modern ground and pound, but they don't
- 10:32love the spirit of it. Hitting a man when he's already
- 10:35down. In their day, if a guy went
- 10:37down, the honorable thing was to let him get back up.
- 10:40You beat him at his best, now the smart business move is to
- 10:44swarm him until the ref steps in.
- 10:46It changes the whole thing from a duel to just a beat down.
- 10:50It does, and they get that it's a sport, but they feel like
- 10:53something of the character building part gets lost.
- 10:55And Speaking of character, this brings us to the emotional core
- 10:59of this entire deep dive. And I have to say this, this
- 11:03part is just staggering. We need to talk about Blinky
- 11:06Rodriguez and his son. This is the story that just
- 11:08stays with you. Blinky's son was a teenager.
- 11:11He was murdered in a drive by a completely random, senseless
- 11:14shooting. Wrong place, wrong time.
- 11:16And you think about a man like Blinky, a fighter, a man who
- 11:20knows violence. The rage from that kind of loss
- 11:23must be bottomless. He carried it for years.
- 11:26He channelled it into activism, trying to broker peace between
- 11:29gangs, but the personal wound was there.
- 11:31And then in 2023, he gets a phone call.
- 11:34From a friend who tells him we know who the killer is, he's in
- 11:37prison and he wants to meet you. I just, I can't imagine getting
- 11:42that call. What do you even do with that?
- 11:44Blinky said he wrestled with it. Every part of him probably
- 11:48wanted to say no, or worse, he said he heard this gentle voice
- 11:52telling him to say yes. So he goes.
- 11:55He goes to the prison, walks into the Chapel.
- 11:57And the man who killed his son David walks in, and the first
- 12:01thing David says to him is, can I get hug just.
- 12:04Wow. And Blinky.
- 12:06Blinky says yes. He embraces the man who murdered
- 12:09his child and they both just breakdown and weep.
- 12:12That moment, I mean, that's a level of strength most of us
- 12:14can't even comprehend. Blinky then leads him in prayer
- 12:17and he has this quote. He's perfect, he says.
- 12:19The power of forgiveness is more powerful than my left hook, and
- 12:22I had a good one. He calls it leaving the 99 to go
- 12:25get the one. It totally reframes what a
- 12:27warrior is. It's not about destroying, it's
- 12:30about healing. It takes more strength to
- 12:32forgive than it does to fight. So these two guys, after all
- 12:35this, you'd think they'd be retired, but they're not done.
- 12:38They're planning something new. The safe haven.
- 12:41And there's a great story here. Apparently, when they built the
- 12:43first Jet Center, Benny drew the blueprints on toilet paper in
- 12:47Japan because he had nothing else.
- 12:49And Blinky had a literal dream about that exact gym layout the
- 12:54night before. It's like they're on the same
- 12:55wavelength. So now Benny's doodling again.
- 12:58On real paper this time, he's designing 9 new pieces of
- 13:01equipment, five of which he says have never been seen before.
- 13:04And I believe him. Their goal is to build a new
- 13:07center, not just a gym, but a safe haven, a place for mental,
- 13:12physical and spiritual training to recreate that magic of the
- 13:16Jet Center for today. Sounds like we need it.
- 13:19We really do. We have plenty of places to
- 13:21learn how to fight. We don't have enough places that
- 13:23teach us how to find peace. So that's the whole journey
- 13:26from, you know, lawless chest biting fights in the 70s to
- 13:30inventing the gear we use all the way to this place of radical
- 13:34forgiveness. It's the full evolution of a
- 13:36martial artist. You start by learning to fight,
- 13:39then you learn to win. But the final stage is learning
- 13:42that the real fight is always internal.
- 13:44And it leaves us with a really big question to think about.
- 13:48We've spent 40 years making the sport safer, more regulated,
- 13:52more profitable. But in doing that, have we
- 13:55stripped away the code? Can you have the sport without
- 13:58the Spirit? I think Benny and Blinky would
- 14:01say you can, but it's empty. The real victory is always a
- 14:04spiritual one. Something to think about next
- 14:06time you're watching the fights. Thanks for diving in with us.
- 14:09See you next time.
