- 0:02Speaker 1: And so we begin the third hour here of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: Morning Show with Preston Scott. Great to be with you
- 0:07Speaker 1: this morning, and as promised, let's just jump right to it.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Joining Jose and me on the program today is the
- 0:15Speaker 1: co founder of Orphan Shade. If you want to learn
- 0:17Speaker 1: more as we talk, Orphanshade dot Com is the website
- 0:22Speaker 1: and it's Jay Shirlow back with us. Jay, how are you.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Good morning, It's good to chat with you.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Are in Malawi. This is just surreal that you're there.
- 0:35Speaker 2: It is. It's it's been an interesting trip at a
- 0:39Speaker 2: lot of things going on here government wise, and we've
- 0:43Speaker 2: had some challenges, but God's been with us and we're
- 0:47Speaker 2: seeing some really mighty and powerful things that God has done.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Jay, let's set the stage real quickly. Tell everybody give
- 0:57Speaker 1: the elevator, pitch on Orphan Shade first and foremot for
- 1:00Speaker 1: those that might not be aware of the program.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Sure. We are partnered with a local church here in
- 1:09Speaker 2: Malawi that has about one hundred and fifty church plans
- 1:15Speaker 2: all in the southern region of Malawi, and so we
- 1:20Speaker 2: have partnered together to serve orphan girls who had lost
- 1:27Speaker 2: both parents as well as being in a situation where
- 1:32Speaker 2: they might have been abuse, they have come through difficult circumstances,
- 1:38Speaker 2: and so we build a home in a village where
- 1:42Speaker 2: our partner has a church plant. Typical church is about
- 1:47Speaker 2: twenty to fifty people that meets underneath a mango tree,
- 1:52Speaker 2: and so we build a home. We recruit eight girls
- 1:57Speaker 2: from that community and between the ages of five and
- 2:03Speaker 2: ten that meet our criteria, and then our church partner
- 2:08Speaker 2: provides a couple to be the parents of those children,
- 2:13Speaker 2: and so we are raising those children typically beyond we're
- 2:19Speaker 2: targeting the eighteen year old range. But our objectives just
- 2:24Speaker 2: to see them see advanced education and to be successful
- 2:30Speaker 2: in their own country.
- 2:32Speaker 1: This is not an orphanage. This is a home for
- 2:35Speaker 1: orphan girls.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yes, we call it a permanent foster home.
- 2:43Speaker 1: As a result, how many homes have you had an
- 2:47Speaker 1: opportunity to build in Malawi thus far?
- 2:51Speaker 2: So we have built three homes and have three families
- 2:55Speaker 2: that are operating. The one that your listeners might remember
- 3:02Speaker 2: because you guys helped us raise money to build that home.
- 3:06Speaker 2: It's in the village called Mdcca and that's our third home.
- 3:12Speaker 2: I had the opportunity to visit that family yesterday. We
- 3:17Speaker 2: can talk about that later. However, we're in the process
- 3:21Speaker 2: of building our fourth home, and we have plans to
- 3:25Speaker 2: build homes five and six this year. Number six is
- 3:30Speaker 2: the one that your listeners provided all the funds to construct,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and we're very thankful.
- 3:41Speaker 1: So nice with the noise of the news to push
- 3:43Speaker 1: away and talk about other things that are infinitely more
- 3:48Speaker 1: eternally important, the work of Orphanshade again Orphanshade dot com.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Jay tell us about homes one, two and three and
- 3:57Speaker 1: just kind of update us on the progress the status
- 4:00Speaker 1: you've observed now years later after seeing them uprate, well, I.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Can speak to the home that you're used that your
- 4:10Speaker 2: listeners supported in then Decca home number three. I wasn't
- 4:16Speaker 2: able to go to the other two on this trip.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I got to see the family. Yesterday. I went to
- 4:25Speaker 2: the village and worshiped in the local church with our
- 4:30Speaker 2: friends and had the opportunity to preach the eight girls
- 4:35Speaker 2: who are all there with their parents, and I got
- 4:38Speaker 2: to witness them sing worship music to the audience and
- 4:46Speaker 2: there they are a great choir without any music, which
- 4:51Speaker 2: is very African. Then we went to the home and
- 4:57Speaker 2: when I first sat down with the girls, they were
- 5:00Speaker 2: a little bit stand office, because they haven't seen me
- 5:03Speaker 2: in twenty four months, and even that was sort of
- 5:09Speaker 2: a fast event, and so I just spent time through
- 5:13Speaker 2: a translator, just asking questions and praising them for the
- 5:19Speaker 2: work they've done at school, for all of their hard
- 5:25Speaker 2: work that we're seeing the fruits of now. As an example,
- 5:31Speaker 2: the girls when they first started school this is a
- 5:34Speaker 2: local Malawi school, they failed. Every one of them failed
- 5:39Speaker 2: the first period and they were kind of dejected. But
- 5:46Speaker 2: we hired a tutor and that tutor is still there
- 5:50Speaker 2: working with our girls, and as of the last grading period,
- 5:56Speaker 2: four of the eight girls were ranked number one in
- 6:01Speaker 2: their school year, and that's out of hundreds of students,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and so we're seeing results, which is really encouraging for me.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Another aspect that is really important to us is mental health.
- 6:18Speaker 2: These these are children who have been through so much
- 6:21Speaker 2: trauma that they have experienced the result of their brain
- 6:27Speaker 2: being wired in a dysfunctional way. And so we've been
- 6:31Speaker 2: able to apply some principles that we've been learning to
- 6:35Speaker 2: help these girls unwind from these experiences and really form
- 6:41Speaker 2: attachment relationships with both their parents and with an individual
- 6:47Speaker 2: adult lady from the church who is discipling them, and
- 6:52Speaker 2: so we're really encouraged as to what we're seeing.
- 6:55Speaker 1: The conditions in Malawi generally speaking, what are they very difficult?
- 7:03Speaker 2: Just just this week, the government ran out of hard
- 7:10Speaker 2: currency and did not have the ability to buy fuel
- 7:15Speaker 2: on the open market outside of of mallowing and no
- 7:21Speaker 2: one will give them credit. And so they've gone through
- 7:24Speaker 2: a period of no gas and no diesel for quite
- 7:29Speaker 2: a while, and so that affects everything. And you know,
- 7:35Speaker 2: cars aren't moving, trucks aren't moving, and the whole country
- 7:39Speaker 2: slows down. And this even affected us. We did not
- 7:45Speaker 2: have a full gas tank when we left yesterday to
- 7:48Speaker 2: go to and Becca, and so we decided to go
- 7:53Speaker 2: on faith, and we had less than a quarter of
- 7:57Speaker 2: a tank. We started driving and my friend Elijah noticed
- 8:02Speaker 2: there was a gas station with no line and the
- 8:04Speaker 2: hat fuel and we said, thank you God. It was
- 8:10Speaker 2: a miracle, and so we had just enough gas to
- 8:13Speaker 2: get some of them back and back last night.
- 8:23Speaker 1: The ministry is called Orphan Shade, and it's an opportunity
- 8:27Speaker 1: for you to make a difference. A little goes a
- 8:31Speaker 1: very long way in Malawi, a very long way. In
- 8:34Speaker 1: joining US, co founder of Orphan shade Jay Shearlow Jay.
- 8:39Speaker 1: We've got home number four. It's now open or about
- 8:44Speaker 1: to be.
- 8:46Speaker 2: It's under construction. I would say it's about halfway.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Okay. Home number five has an amazing story because of
- 8:57Speaker 1: how you came about the property. Please share that.
- 9:01Speaker 2: Sure, we have been looking at a variety of villages
- 9:07Speaker 2: again where our partner has a church, and so our
- 9:14Speaker 2: co founder, Pastor Kompomo, we had him looking around and
- 9:22Speaker 2: sitting down with various pastors and village had been where
- 9:28Speaker 2: they operate. And so one day he is driving along
- 9:33Speaker 2: in our very small with a lot of kilometers on it,
- 9:39Speaker 2: Honda and obviously two wheel drive, and it had been
- 9:45Speaker 2: raining torrentially, and so he's driving along and he gets
- 9:51Speaker 2: stuck in a big slice of mud, and so people
- 9:56Speaker 2: come to try to help him, and it no joy.
- 10:01Speaker 2: He's stuck until things dry out. And so he's sitting
- 10:06Speaker 2: there and he starts talking with the neighbors that are
- 10:09Speaker 2: right there on the road, and eventually he starts talking
- 10:14Speaker 2: to the owner of the property, and so they're chit
- 10:18Speaker 2: chatting and he tells them what we're doing and what
- 10:23Speaker 2: we're looking for, and the guy says, well, that's very interesting.
- 10:28Speaker 2: He says, I've already sold this property. It's going to
- 10:32Speaker 2: close tomorrow and the funds will be transferred. And he said,
- 10:38Speaker 2: but I would like you to have it. And so
- 10:42Speaker 2: he negotiated a price which is lower than what he
- 10:45Speaker 2: sold the land previously. And so we purchased that land,
- 10:53Speaker 2: a beautiful piece of land that is very conveniently located,
- 10:58Speaker 2: and we got it at a below market price. So
- 11:03Speaker 2: we keep having these kinds of things happen, God showing
- 11:08Speaker 2: up in dramatic ways that we cannot explain in the natural.
- 11:14Speaker 2: This is not the only story.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I just you know, it reminds me of an old
- 11:19Speaker 1: expression I don't know who shared it with me said,
- 11:22Speaker 1: There's no such thing as a coincidence in God's economy.
- 11:25Speaker 1: A coincidence is just a miracle where God chooses to
- 11:28Speaker 1: remain anonymous. Amen, and I look at a stuck car
- 11:35Speaker 1: in the middle of who knows where. That leads to
- 11:38Speaker 1: the perfect piece of property. And so once home number
- 11:42Speaker 1: four is finished, you begin work on home number five
- 11:45Speaker 1: on this piece of land.
- 11:47Speaker 2: Yes, we've already had the builder out there and we've
- 11:51Speaker 2: picked the spot we're going to build the house. And
- 11:55Speaker 2: so the neighbors are going to clear some land to
- 11:58Speaker 2: help the builder get everything organized, and so everything is
- 12:03Speaker 2: going better than I ever thought, you know.
- 12:07Speaker 1: I every time I talk to somebody that starts a
- 12:11Speaker 1: ministry program, I'm always intrigued by the lessons learned Jay
- 12:17Speaker 1: from Pengetti and Home number one to now hopefully finishing
- 12:22Speaker 1: home numbers five and six this year. What do you
- 12:25Speaker 1: think the ministry you've learned that's most important moving ahead
- 12:33Speaker 1: and forward cast future casting? What's ahead?
- 12:39Speaker 2: I would say that we're now in the stage of
- 12:44Speaker 2: really coning in on our model and making it really
- 12:50Speaker 2: stable and repeatable. But I would say what's more important
- 12:56Speaker 2: than that is that we've really learned from the people
- 13:01Speaker 2: who have been the parents, who are the parents of
- 13:05Speaker 2: our existing homes. We had a great conversation with the
- 13:10Speaker 2: parents in them Deca yesterday, and I got to ask
- 13:14Speaker 2: some really tough questions, uh, and I got quite a
- 13:18Speaker 2: lot of insight from them. They are the experts, not me,
- 13:22Speaker 2: and so we're learning things like how long does it
- 13:28Speaker 2: take for these girls to accept their new mom and dad?
- 13:33Speaker 2: And so we have data now that says it's three months,
- 13:38Speaker 2: and so we have, you know, a process that we're
- 13:43Speaker 2: thinking in our head, but we actually have to use data,
- 13:47Speaker 2: uh and sort of drive our programs so that we
- 13:49Speaker 2: can really hone in on that and teach the parents
- 13:53Speaker 2: of what to expect so that they're not surprised and
- 13:56Speaker 2: that they have the right tools to go through this
- 14:00Speaker 2: process with the children. Another one is that it takes
- 14:04Speaker 2: about six months for things to settle down. And what
- 14:12Speaker 2: I mean by that is when we start a new family,
- 14:18Speaker 2: the community is confused and upset, and so we find
- 14:27Speaker 2: that we are facing the enemy showing up by means
- 14:31Speaker 2: of witchcraft and doing things like that I don't really
- 14:35Speaker 2: want to repeat on the radio, which causes a lot
- 14:40Speaker 2: of problems. And so we now know what to expect
- 14:44Speaker 2: from the community, on the good side and the bad side,
- 14:47Speaker 2: and so we can prepare our families and prepare our
- 14:51Speaker 2: team to really be able to pray into that and
- 14:55Speaker 2: to deal with it as it comes, as opposed to
- 14:58Speaker 2: letting things go by months after months not doing anything
- 15:02Speaker 2: about it.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Well exciting to know that shortly there will be now
- 15:06Speaker 1: thirty two young ladies being served and saved from a
- 15:14Speaker 1: life of great difficulty and having a chance at a
- 15:18Speaker 1: better future thanks to what you Pastor Prince and all
- 15:22Speaker 1: of the people in these churches are doing to help
- 15:25Speaker 1: serve these children. Jay, thank you for sharing time with
- 15:27Speaker 1: us this morning, and godspeed brother my pleasure.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Jay Sherlow with us this morning Orphanshade dot Com speaking
- 15:37Speaker 1: to us from Malawi and finishing up home number four.
- 15:45Speaker 1: They've got the land for five and then comes the
- 15:48Speaker 1: home that you people raise the money to build, and uh,
- 15:53Speaker 1: it's just it's amazing you people. You joined together and
- 15:58Speaker 1: put almost sixty thousand dollars in the bank to build
- 16:02Speaker 1: the second home, almost double what the first one cost.
- 16:06Speaker 1: So thank you and there's an update here on the
- 16:08Speaker 1: Morning Show with Preston Scott
