Queens’ Ridgewood Reservoir is getting a major eco-makeover as volunteers pull out 15,000 cubic feet of invasive phragmites to restore native wildlife and turn the site into a natural flood buffer. Once a drinking water source, it’s now a key part of NYC’s “bluebelt” strategy to manage rainwater with nature—not against it. Wildlife is already returning, including lizards, fishing spiders, bryozoans, and even snapping turtles—some of which have been known to take down swans.
