- Lucas: Welcome back to another episode of Learn Finnish with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. It is so good to be here again with you. Lucas: We have been talking about cooking for a while now. We have chopped onions and we have measured flour. Luna: Yes. And before we bake anything, we need to get the mixture right. That is what we are doing today. Lucas: Exactly. If Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language... Luna: Then the way these stay ad-free is listener support. You can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo — that's F. E. X. I. N. G. O. Lucas: Thanks for listening. Now, let's go back to the kitchen. First step: the eggs. Luna: Right. The eggs. In English, I say 'I whisk the eggs'. What do we say in Finnish? Lucas: We say 'Vaahtoitan munat'. Listen closely. Lucas: Vaahtoitan munat. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Wait, let me try that again. Vaahtoitan munat. Lucas: That is perfect. 'Vaahtoitan' means 'I whisk' or 'I beat'. 'Munat' means 'the eggs'. Luna: Oh, I see. So it is about making them foamy? Like foam? Lucas: Exactly. You are creating foam. So, 'Vaahtoitan munat' is the phrase. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Okay. I like that word. It sounds energetic. Lucas: It does. Let's say it one more time together. Vaahtoitan munat. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Good. Now, once the eggs are whisked, what do we do? Lucas: We mix everything together. The flour, the sugar, the eggs. We make the dough. Luna: So, 'I mix the dough'. How do we say that? Lucas: We say 'Sekoitan taikinan'. Listen. Lucas: Sekoitan taikinan. Luna: Sekoitan taikinan. Hmm. 'Sekoitan' is 'I mix'? And 'taikinan' is 'the dough'? Lucas: Yes. 'Sekoittaa' is the verb 'to mix'. When you add the ending, it becomes 'I mix'. 'Taikina' is dough. 'Sekoitan taikinan'. Luna: Sekoitan taikinan. Oh, I think I got it. I am mixing the dough. Lucas: You did. There it is. Let's practice the full sequence. First, the eggs. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Lucas: Then the dough. Luna: Sekoitan taikinan. Lucas: Perfect. Now, after you mix the dough, where does it go? Luna: Into the oven! To bake it. Lucas: Right. 'I put it in the oven'. This is a very common phrase. 'Laitan uuniin'. Lucas: Laitan uuniin. Luna: Laitan uuniin. Oh, 'uuni' is oven? So 'uuniin' is 'into the oven'? Lucas: Yes. The '-in' ending often shows movement into something. So 'Laitan uuniin' means 'I put into the oven'. Luna: Laitan uuniin. That makes sense. It is simple. I just put it there. Lucas: It is. And then you wait. But you don't eat it immediately. You let it cool down. Luna: Right. If it is too hot, you burn your tongue. So, 'Let it cool down'? Lucas: Yes. We use the passive form here. 'Anna jäähtyä'. Lucas: Anna jäähtyä. Luna: Anna jäähtyä. 'Jäähtyä'... is that related to ice? Jää? Lucas: Wow, you are sharp. Yes. 'Jää' is ice. 'Jäähdyttää' is to cool down. 'Jäähtyä' is to cool down reflexively. 'Anna' is 'let' or 'give'. Luna: Oh, I love that connection. Ice. Cooling down. Anna jäähtyä. Lucas: Anna jäähtyä. Exactly. Finally, you taste it. Is it sweet? Luna: Yes! It is a cake or a cookie. So, 'The taste is sweet'? Lucas: Yes. 'Maku on makea'. Lucas: Maku on makea. Luna: Maku on makea. Maku is taste? And makea is sweet? Lucas: Correct. 'Maku' is taste or flavor. 'Makea' is sweet. So 'Maku on makea'. Luna: Maku on makea. That is so easy to remember. Taste is sweet. Lucas: Let's review all five phrases. Start with the eggs. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Lucas: Good. Then mix the dough. Luna: Sekoitan taikinan. Lucas: Put it in the oven. Luna: Laitan uuniin. Lucas: Let it cool down. Luna: Anna jäähtyä. Lucas: And finally, the taste. Luna: Maku on makea. Lucas: You nailed it. Those are the five key steps for today. Luna: I feel like I could actually bake something now. Even if it is just a simple cake. Lucas: Start small. Use these phrases when you cook. Say them out loud. Luna: Vaahtoitan munat. Sekoitan taikinan. Laitan uuniin. Lucas: There you go. Keep practicing. We will see you next time. Luna: Bye for now. Remember, Fexingo is here to help.
