- 0:00Speaker 1: In order to understand love, I also have to understand
- 0:03Speaker 1: what is not love. The warning label of like going
- 0:06Speaker 1: after your mission is once you declare your mission, the
- 0:09Speaker 1: entire universe will conspire to help that mission come to life.
- 0:13Speaker 1: That means sometimes it'll be challenges. That means sometimes it'll
- 0:16Speaker 1: be breakdowns. That means there'll sometimes be struggles. But when
- 0:19Speaker 1: we can look at all of those and say thank you,
- 0:20Speaker 1: that's when life, I believe, really gets magical. Yeah.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Hey, everyone, Emily Abodi here.
- 0:39Speaker 3: You are listening to episode two thirty six of Hurdle,

- 1:02Speaker 3: potential and of course have some fun along the way.
- 1:07Speaker 2: For today's episode.
- 1:09Speaker 3: I am elated to bring you my conversation with Brandon Collinsworth.
- 1:14Speaker 3: He is, oh my goodness, so many things at the
- 1:17Speaker 3: top level. He's a human performance coach, He's also the
- 1:20Speaker 3: director of human Performance and Innovation at Core Power Yoga,
- 1:24Speaker 3: plus a Nike Global trainer and an all around really.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Motivational and inspirational human.
- 1:31Speaker 3: I had the good fortune to catch him when he
- 1:34Speaker 3: was here in New York City.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You want to talk about someone.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Who is constantly on the move and very rarely stateside,
- 1:42Speaker 3: and this is your guy. Brandon was in town to
- 1:45Speaker 3: celebrate the launch of a new program that he developed
- 1:48Speaker 3: for Core Power Yoga called Core Power Strength X. And
- 1:53Speaker 3: as I sit here recording this, I am just minutes
- 1:57Speaker 3: away from heading out to go take my first class and.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I cannot wait. But I digress.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Let's talk about Brandon, originally from Las Vegas, and today's
- 2:09Speaker 3: episode we talk about what it was like for him
- 2:13Speaker 3: to grow up, as he puts it, in the streets,
- 2:16Speaker 3: navigating poverty and finding movement from an early age, knowing
- 2:21Speaker 3: that his movement practice would eventually dramatically transform his life.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Brandon talks to us about what it was like to
- 2:29Speaker 3: quote unquote get everything he ever wanted, but.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Still feel unfulfilled.
- 2:33Speaker 3: And unhappy, and the big pivot and risk leap of faith,
- 2:37Speaker 3: perhaps so that he took traveling across the world to
- 2:42Speaker 3: find himself. He goes on to talk about how he
- 2:45Speaker 3: started practicing yoga and the dramatic impact that had on him,
- 2:50Speaker 3: eventually leading him to major opportunities both with Nike and
- 2:55Speaker 3: as I said at the top of this episode, Core
- 2:58Speaker 3: Power Yoga, Brandon is full of so much wisdom, so
- 3:02Speaker 3: much goodness. He has made it his life's mission to
- 3:07Speaker 3: embody love, something that we talk a lot about in
- 3:10Speaker 3: today's episode, and it's safe to say that this man
- 3:14Speaker 3: is certainly on the right track.
- 3:17Speaker 2: If you're not doing so yet.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Make sure you're following along with Hurdle on social It's
- 3:20Speaker 3: over at Hurdle Podcast. I am over at Emily a
- 3:23Speaker 3: Body and I'd love for you to take a few
- 3:25Speaker 3: seconds today and leave me a voice message, ask me
- 3:28Speaker 3: a question to be featured in an upcoming episode of Hurdle.
- 3:32Speaker 2: With that, let's get to hurdling today.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I am sitting down with Brendan Collinsworth. He is a
- 3:43Speaker 3: human performance coach. She's also the head of human Performance
- 3:47Speaker 3: and Innovation at Core Power Yoga and oh my god,
- 3:51Speaker 3: I can keep going. A Nike Global trainer, he also
- 3:54Speaker 3: recently helped core Power Yoga develop their Core Power Strength
- 3:58Speaker 3: X offering the first alluring in ten years.
- 4:01Speaker 2: That's new. How are you doing.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm amazing, blessed to be here in beautiful NYC and
- 4:07Speaker 1: so excited to dive deep with you today.
- 4:10Speaker 3: A little different than Costa Rica where you flew in
- 4:13Speaker 3: from a.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Little bit different. Yeah, my skin's like, what's going on?
- 4:16Speaker 2: Oh my god? My skins like, what's going on? And
- 4:18Speaker 2: I've been here. This cold weather does me no favors whatsoever.
- 4:22Speaker 2: How are you feeling?
- 4:23Speaker 1: I feel incredibly blessed. Twenty twenty three feels like a
- 4:28Speaker 1: sudden ray has just emerged beyond the clouds. And I'm
- 4:32Speaker 1: in this thing I call the God Pocket. And the
- 4:36Speaker 1: God Pocket is this metaphorical place of concentrated focus where
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm focused on everything that is true to me and
- 4:45Speaker 1: fully leaning into my potential and my purpose. I've been
- 4:48Speaker 1: in it for about six months and just been leaning
- 4:50Speaker 1: into the opportunities that are at hand, especially with this
- 4:55Speaker 1: juncture and history, especially where we are in the wellness space,
- 4:58Speaker 1: and just all the opportunity that have you know, presented themselves.
- 5:02Speaker 2: The God Pocket, it's the God Pocket.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Yoh, I love that terminology. That's awesome.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Okay, So for someone else he wants to be in
- 5:10Speaker 2: the God Pocket?
- 5:12Speaker 1: How do they get there?
- 5:13Speaker 2: How do they get there?
- 5:14Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 5:15Speaker 1: So about six months ago, my mother passed away and
- 5:19Speaker 1: I needed to focus my energy in a really concentrated way.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And I was sitting with a friend and I was like,
- 5:24Speaker 1: you know what, the only way I'm going to take
- 5:26Speaker 1: all of this pain internet purposeful is to focus on
- 5:31Speaker 1: exactly what God, the Universe, my highest self, my purpose
- 5:35Speaker 1: has for me. And so I put myself in this
- 5:37Speaker 1: space of just concentrating completely on what is true to
- 5:41Speaker 1: me and what is aligned with me, and everything else
- 5:43Speaker 1: that wasn't in alignment with that to cut out. And
- 5:46Speaker 1: that's where I've been for the last six months. And
- 5:48Speaker 1: I promise you the seeds that have blossomed in those
- 5:52Speaker 1: six months has been absolutely incredible. So I stepped into
- 5:55Speaker 1: the God pocket six months ago. In twenty twenty three
- 5:58Speaker 1: is my year of the God Pocket as an experiment,
- 6:01Speaker 1: just to see what happens if I use this whole
- 6:04Speaker 1: year to focus on my goals, my mission, my heart,
- 6:08Speaker 1: and my service to see what can blossom from of that.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It seems and sounds really beautiful in practice, but hearing
- 6:17Speaker 3: you say that, I also recognize that getting to this
- 6:21Speaker 3: place where you can choose all of these things that
- 6:24Speaker 3: seem good for you can be challenging because we have
- 6:28Speaker 3: to then choose to do something which can be difficult,
- 6:32Speaker 3: which is walking away from those things that don't serve us.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Easier said than done. So, how then, does someone get
- 6:38Speaker 3: to the place where they're okay with walking away from
- 6:41Speaker 3: the things that don't serve them in favor of leveling
- 6:44Speaker 3: up to being in this better for me arena?
- 6:49Speaker 4: I love the question, and I love how deep we've
- 6:51Speaker 4: dove so quick we're in it.
- 6:55Speaker 1: So my therapist once told me that if it is
- 6:59Speaker 1: familiar to you, even though it is unhealthy, it might
- 7:02Speaker 1: be comfortable. But if it's unfamiliar to you, even though
- 7:06Speaker 1: it is healthy, it will be uncomfortable. A lot of times,
- 7:11Speaker 1: when we talk about picking up new habits or stepping
- 7:13Speaker 1: into new paradigms or stepping into new spaces, if we've
- 7:17Speaker 1: never been exposed to say healthy, it might be hard
- 7:22Speaker 1: to step into that space, or to adopt a new habit,
- 7:25Speaker 1: or step into a new paradigm, or cut that relationship out,
- 7:29Speaker 1: or step into a new friend group. I think the
- 7:31Speaker 1: key with all growth is to take that first step
- 7:37Speaker 1: and that first step usually wakes up what I call
- 7:40Speaker 1: big mo this's big momentum, and momentum takes over and
- 7:44Speaker 1: as long as we nourish those steps forward, inevitably we're
- 7:49Speaker 1: shown the way. Now, for a lot of people stepping
- 7:51Speaker 1: into twenty twenty three, they talk about they want to
- 7:54Speaker 1: change everything. I always say, like, change one thing. Earlier
- 7:58Speaker 1: we were talking about James cleartom habits, like those one
- 8:01Speaker 1: things that like making your bed in the morning, or
- 8:04Speaker 1: like hiring a therapist, you know, signing up for a
- 8:08Speaker 1: training session, or hiring a trainer. These things end up
- 8:11Speaker 1: being incredibly powerful momentum shifting things in the long run,
- 8:16Speaker 1: as long as we stick with it. So for all
- 8:18Speaker 1: those out there who are trying to really, you know,
- 8:20Speaker 1: step into a new paradigm, take that first step.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Take that first step.
- 8:25Speaker 3: So this is a simplistic segue back to you taking
- 8:29Speaker 3: your first step into movement, which I know happened long, long,
- 8:34Speaker 3: long ago. Talk to us about the catalyst for you
- 8:38Speaker 3: learning the importance of movement within your body.
- 8:44Speaker 1: All right, we're going down memory lane. We're back back
- 8:47Speaker 1: in the day. So I grew up in Las Vegas,
- 8:51Speaker 1: east side of Las Vegas, in the projects, and about
- 8:57Speaker 1: seven eight years old, I start arted to realize that
- 9:01Speaker 1: my body was a mechanism to help me find deeper
- 9:07Speaker 1: levels of happiness and joy within myself. In third grade,
- 9:12Speaker 1: I had a pe teacher who created this thing called
- 9:14Speaker 1: the Jog and Walk Stars, and we had an option
- 9:17Speaker 1: every day at lunch we could either play or we
- 9:21Speaker 1: could run laps. And the caveat was that if you
- 9:25Speaker 1: ran enough laps, you got a pizza party. And you know,
- 9:27Speaker 1: as kids, if you get a pizza party, like you're motivated.
- 9:30Speaker 1: But she told me one thing. She said that you're
- 9:33Speaker 1: inevitably going to come up against a wall. And she
- 9:36Speaker 1: said this wall is going to come in the form
- 9:38Speaker 1: of a mental block, or it might be this stinging
- 9:41Speaker 1: cramp in your stomach. She said, I promise you, if
- 9:44Speaker 1: you can push through the wall, there's something on the
- 9:47Speaker 1: other side. There's gifts on the other side of that.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So I remember about third grade fourth grade, I started
- 9:52Speaker 1: to play with the wall and I started to realize
- 9:55Speaker 1: that if I pushed hard enough, if I stayed with
- 9:59Speaker 1: it long enough, on the other side of the resistance,
- 10:01Speaker 1: there were gifts. And that became my intro into movement.
- 10:06Speaker 1: When the streets became more prevailing. And I'm fifteen, sixteen
- 10:11Speaker 1: years old, and the pull of the streets became so
- 10:16Speaker 1: much stronger. One of the things that kept me saying,
- 10:19Speaker 1: where when my friends were getting killed, when my friends
- 10:22Speaker 1: were becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol, When I'm seeing
- 10:26Speaker 1: so many people around me fall short of their dreams.
- 10:29Speaker 1: One of the things that kept me rooted and grounded
- 10:31Speaker 1: and in my body was my movement practice. So literally,
- 10:35Speaker 1: movement and my love for the burn and my love
- 10:38Speaker 1: for fitness is what pulled me out of the streets
- 10:41Speaker 1: and allowed me to converse and play with the metaphorical
- 10:47Speaker 1: resistance points in life to inevitably strengthen my spirit to
- 10:51Speaker 1: step into my purpose. And so a lot of people
- 10:55Speaker 1: step in the fitness game for esthetics. By default, step
- 11:00Speaker 1: in the fitness game because it was the only thing
- 11:01Speaker 1: I had for that would keep me alive. There was
- 11:05Speaker 1: a powerful tool for me to survive the streets.
- 11:08Speaker 3: What did it look like for you at that time?
- 11:11Speaker 3: Your movement practice.
- 11:13Speaker 1: So when I was in third fourth grade, it was
- 11:15Speaker 1: a lot of running. When I was sixteen years old,
- 11:18Speaker 1: I found I was over at a friend's house and
- 11:20Speaker 1: there was an apartment gym, and we found out that
- 11:24Speaker 1: you could get into the apartment gym without being a
- 11:26Speaker 1: resident of the apartment. We found the code somehow, and
- 11:29Speaker 1: so my first like full on practice of movement that
- 11:34Speaker 1: was consistent was I would walk five miles from my
- 11:38Speaker 1: apartment building to this other apartment gym almost every day.
- 11:42Speaker 1: And this is back when we had a CD player.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I was bumping like some old school outcasts or something
- 11:46Speaker 1: like that, walking to this apartment gym to you know,
- 11:51Speaker 1: work out. And what I started seeing is like I
- 11:54Speaker 1: started getting stronger, and then all of a sudden, like
- 11:56Speaker 1: I started feeling better. And the next thing you know,
- 11:59Speaker 1: people are looking at me and they're like, oh, bro,
- 12:01Speaker 1: you kind of swow. Can you teach me how to
- 12:04Speaker 1: like move this way? And one thing led to another,
- 12:07Speaker 1: and so finally, when I was about nineteen years old,
- 12:11Speaker 1: I became a trainer. And it started off with five
- 12:14Speaker 1: dollars sessions out of my apartment gym, and five dollar
- 12:18Speaker 1: sessions turned into ten years of internships where I'm diving
- 12:24Speaker 1: deep into everything human movement, human performance, and I loved it.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And it was just such a deep passion and that
- 12:31Speaker 1: inevitably carried me out of the streets into the skies
- 12:35Speaker 1: and my potential.
- 12:37Speaker 3: It's so impressive to hear you talk about this deep
- 12:42Speaker 3: rooted passion that you were then able to make and
- 12:47Speaker 3: flip into purpose, right, and for you to be able
- 12:52Speaker 3: to have such a head on your shoulders to know
- 12:56Speaker 3: that you weren't interested in all of the kind of
- 13:00Speaker 3: other riff raff that was going on. Did you feel
- 13:04Speaker 3: at times though, that you were pulled into that maybe
- 13:09Speaker 3: without your own agency at all.
- 13:13Speaker 1: There's been a lot of different moments in the space
- 13:16Speaker 1: of my career, which is now twenty years. Yeah. Yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 1: two thousand and two is when I started the journey,
- 13:24Speaker 1: and growing up in Las Vegas, and being that my
- 13:27Speaker 1: career started in Las Vegas, there's so many different spaces
- 13:31Speaker 1: to be pulled into. One of the things that I
- 13:35Speaker 1: was gifted early on, I was working as a spa
- 13:38Speaker 1: tendant at the Wind Hotel, basically taking care of a whole
- 13:41Speaker 1: bunch of naked men coming in there, like getting their
- 13:43Speaker 1: spas in, like one of their eucalyptus scrubs and all that.
- 13:47Speaker 1: This life coach performance coach had so much swagger. His
- 13:51Speaker 1: name was Jammelle Davenport, and he came in and at
- 13:54Speaker 1: that time, he was one of the biggest human performance
- 13:57Speaker 1: slash life coaches in the game, which inevitably inspired me
- 13:59Speaker 1: to get my master's performance psychology because I wanted to
- 14:03Speaker 1: connect the body and the brain and unify a holistic
- 14:08Speaker 1: approach to the training that I was in the protocols
- 14:10Speaker 1: that I was teaching. But he told me, he said, listen, Brandon,
- 14:13Speaker 1: He's like, if you really want to be successful in
- 14:15Speaker 1: this game, you need to live by two things.
- 14:17Speaker 4: He said. First, you need to be the example. He said.
- 14:21Speaker 1: You got to walk that walk, he said, because what
- 14:23Speaker 1: you do behind closed doors will always be seen in public.
- 14:26Speaker 1: And that was one of the things that never pulled
- 14:28Speaker 1: me into any scenes, and it always kept my heart
- 14:30Speaker 1: in the right place, like, how do I serve these
- 14:33Speaker 1: people best? Well, I need to serve myself best. I
- 14:36Speaker 1: need to be when I'm preaching, and I see in
- 14:38Speaker 1: this space, especially the wellness industry, there's a lot of
- 14:41Speaker 1: talk embodyment is a different thing. Embodyment is hard and
- 14:45Speaker 1: Epitdocus says, you know, don't talk about your philosophy embody it,
- 14:50Speaker 1: And I think that's really important. And then the second
- 14:53Speaker 1: thing he told me is you can never be afraid
- 14:54Speaker 1: to help people become better than you. And that was
- 14:57Speaker 1: when I had to sit back for a minute and
- 14:59Speaker 1: think about because when you really think about it, like
- 15:01Speaker 1: people will help you, but oftentimes they'll help you get
- 15:05Speaker 1: to a certain point, but a lot of people wouldn't
- 15:09Speaker 1: help you to get so good that they would not
- 15:11Speaker 1: need you anymore. And this comes back to this concept
- 15:13Speaker 1: of like not giving man fish, but like teaching men
- 15:17Speaker 1: to fish, or teaching a person to fish so they
- 15:19Speaker 1: can eat for a lifetime. You know, they say you
- 15:21Speaker 1: give a man of phish, he eats. Once you teach
- 15:23Speaker 1: a man of fish, he eats for a lifetime. And
- 15:25Speaker 1: so those two philosophies early on in my career really
- 15:30Speaker 1: brought my focus to a place that drowned out the
- 15:35Speaker 1: outside noise and allowed me to really focus on the
- 15:37Speaker 1: mission of being in service to each and every person
- 15:41Speaker 1: that I have an opportunity to touch.
- 15:43Speaker 3: Yeah, and again, like, kudos to you, because that's just
- 15:46Speaker 3: such an impressive outlook, especially when you talk about your beginnings.
- 15:51Speaker 3: You also mentioned charging at first five dollars for people
- 15:55Speaker 3: to come and work out in your apartment, Jim, not
- 15:58Speaker 3: to blow up your spot, but you ended up at
- 16:01Speaker 3: U Penn. And so how does someone go from charging
- 16:05Speaker 3: five dollars to train people in their apartment gym to
- 16:08Speaker 3: then getting to a place where arguably you're so established
- 16:12Speaker 3: perhaps that you cannot only make that kind of life jump,
- 16:17Speaker 3: but then also maybe even a FOURD that kind of
- 16:19Speaker 3: life jump.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It's incredible what is possible when the heart is in
- 16:24Speaker 1: the right place. Yeah, it's like the universe is always listening,
- 16:29Speaker 1: and when we're truly living from a space of intention
- 16:31Speaker 1: and truth, doors open up.
- 16:34Speaker 4: You know. Penn was a.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Beautiful gift that unfolded in a way that I still
- 16:43Speaker 1: have to pinch myself at times because it was funny
- 16:47Speaker 1: coming from Vecas. I didn't even know Penn was an
- 16:49Speaker 1: Ivy League school. So I'm actually at that time, I
- 16:53Speaker 1: was interning for three years under a sports psychologist and
- 16:58Speaker 1: he was one of the University of Kansas like mindset
- 17:01Speaker 1: coaches back when University Kansas basketball was just like killing
- 17:05Speaker 1: it and back in the day. And he really introduced
- 17:09Speaker 1: me to the world of flow and mell high checks
- 17:12Speaker 1: and mill high and like flow states and human performance
- 17:15Speaker 1: and like was wild. I would do seventy plus sessions
- 17:20Speaker 1: a week under him. I'm talking about sometimes twenty plus
- 17:23Speaker 1: sessions in a day, and he would critique each one
- 17:26Speaker 1: for three years. And this dude would pay me like
- 17:28Speaker 1: ten bucks an hour. He's making so much money off me,
- 17:31Speaker 1: but he was teaching me and he drilled me for
- 17:33Speaker 1: three years. And then in that space, it opened up
- 17:35Speaker 1: a love for psychology, and so I was like, I
- 17:38Speaker 1: want to go study performance psychology or positive psychology. At
- 17:41Speaker 1: that time, there was only one program and it happened
- 17:44Speaker 1: to be like University of Pennsylvania, and me, not knowing
- 17:47Speaker 1: that it was IVY League, I'm like, oh, this is
- 17:48Speaker 1: like it T Tech, University of Phoenix. I'm just going
- 17:51Speaker 1: to apply.
- 17:51Speaker 4: And then my buddy was like bro us the IVY Leagues.
- 17:55Speaker 1: And so I spent two years on one application to
- 17:58Speaker 1: get into UPenn and I knew there was no other
- 18:02Speaker 1: colleges at grad schools that I applied to. I spent
- 18:05Speaker 1: two years sitting at a Starbucks taking all the GRI
- 18:09Speaker 1: courses on this like one program, and I applied. The
- 18:14Speaker 1: emissions date went by. I didn't hear from anybody last
- 18:18Speaker 1: but not least like a month after they closed the application,
- 18:22Speaker 1: somebody dropped out and I got that spot. Wow, that's
- 18:25Speaker 1: how I got into pen and so it was like,
- 18:28Speaker 1: how did you know that?
- 18:28Speaker 2: Did they tell you that they?
- 18:30Speaker 1: Like on the back end, it was disclosed that I
- 18:36Speaker 1: was gifted that gift. And I think it comes again
- 18:38Speaker 1: like the universe always is going to meet us where.
- 18:43Speaker 4: We show up.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Sometimes we just got to lean in and trust in,
- 18:47Speaker 1: put it all on the table and then allow for
- 18:50Speaker 1: you know, the universe to get our back fully.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think that that is only a concept
- 18:55Speaker 3: that over the last couple of years, maybe really the
- 18:57Speaker 3: last year that I personally have I've really leaned into
- 19:02Speaker 3: it was It's like something as simple as me speaking
- 19:05Speaker 3: to my life coach. I said to her, I want
- 19:08Speaker 3: to strengthen my relationship with my brother, and she said, well,
- 19:11Speaker 3: where's like the common ground? And I talked to her
- 19:12Speaker 3: about how we had a history of like we both
- 19:14Speaker 3: at one point really liked to CrossFit, and so we
- 19:16Speaker 3: used to talk about CrossFit. And I was like, I
- 19:18Speaker 3: guess I got to think about what the common ground is.
- 19:20Speaker 3: And then out of nowhere, yesterday I wear a woop
- 19:23Speaker 3: regularly and my brother texts me and he says.
- 19:26Speaker 2: Do I need a whoop?
- 19:27Speaker 3: And I'm like, this is literally the universe like conspiring
- 19:29Speaker 3: for us to have something like just like low hanging
- 19:31Speaker 3: fruit to talk about regularly. And I recently got my
- 19:34Speaker 3: dad a woop, so I'm like, you could be in
- 19:35Speaker 3: our whoop group, and so he's like, I ordered it,
- 19:38Speaker 3: and so it's just it's just funny because it's something
- 19:40Speaker 3: so simple, right, It's like, I'm going to think about this.
- 19:43Speaker 3: But when I believe that it's twofold, it's you put
- 19:46Speaker 3: something out into the universe. And I also believe that
- 19:49Speaker 3: you have to be a good persona I think that
- 19:52Speaker 3: it is you do good by others and have good
- 19:54Speaker 3: intentions in this world, and then these things are going
- 19:56Speaker 3: to come back to you and it will work for you.
- 19:59Speaker 3: But regardless of if you're a good person or not,
- 20:02Speaker 3: there is this baseline that like everything that is happening,
- 20:05Speaker 3: whether you may perceive it as good or bad, is
- 20:07Speaker 3: happening for you.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 3: Is that definitely like a principle that you go by
- 20:11Speaker 3: as well.
- 20:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I mean gratitude on all days for all things in
- 20:16Speaker 1: all ways, because it's either a lesson or a blessing.
- 20:19Speaker 1: And I think when we meet the universe that way,
- 20:24Speaker 1: the universe responds in such a powerful way. One of
- 20:27Speaker 1: the quotes I always say I live by is like,
- 20:30Speaker 1: stop asking how you can get, and start asking how
- 20:33Speaker 1: you can give. Because when we ask how we can give,
- 20:36Speaker 1: we're showing the universe, We're showing reality, We're laying down
- 20:40Speaker 1: an imprint of abundance, and inevitably it comes back full force.
- 20:43Speaker 1: And that's what the streets really taught me. The streets
- 20:45Speaker 1: taught me to be grateful. One of the things that
- 20:48Speaker 1: I say about my mother, and you know, rest in peace, Mom,
- 20:51Speaker 1: is that she was the most grateful person I've ever met.
- 20:55Speaker 1: It didn't matter if we didn't have no food, it
- 20:57Speaker 1: didn't matter if like the lights were off, it didn't
- 20:59Speaker 1: matter if we were like we.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Had no heat. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 21:03Speaker 1: And so this was another anchor as I started to
- 21:06Speaker 1: like grow and evolve in my career and step into
- 21:09Speaker 1: these spaces and places in these more higher echelon circles.
- 21:15Speaker 1: The one thing that I see a lack of is gratitude,
- 21:19Speaker 1: because so many people are caught up in like what's next.
- 21:22Speaker 1: And the one thing that I realized quickly that was
- 21:24Speaker 1: a superpower if implemented on a regular basis, is gratitude.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's so so special.
- 21:31Speaker 3: And what I'm hearing you say here is that gratitude
- 21:33Speaker 3: was just really instilled in you from such a young age.
- 21:37Speaker 3: And to have that beautiful role model and your mother,
- 21:39Speaker 3: despite the struggles maybe that you and your family navigated
- 21:43Speaker 3: to come back to gratitude is truly just really it's
- 21:46Speaker 3: really special.
- 21:47Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Yeah, And it's the gift that keeps on giving. And
- 21:50Speaker 1: this is one of the reasons why Penn was so
- 21:52Speaker 1: powerful was when I got there, Martin Seligman's work on
- 21:55Speaker 1: gratitude was like becoming internationally known. And essentially they did
- 22:00Speaker 1: a research and they found that if you just wrote
- 22:02Speaker 1: down three things you're grateful for each day, you're exponentially
- 22:05Speaker 1: going to be more happy over time.
- 22:07Speaker 4: How easy.
- 22:08Speaker 1: It doesn't matter what situation you're in, doesn't matter what
- 22:11Speaker 1: class you come from. If you can just get caught
- 22:14Speaker 1: up in the thank you, everything else opens up.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Everything else opens up.
- 22:18Speaker 3: Good thing I start every workday if I sit down
- 22:20Speaker 3: at this desk, the first thing I do before anything
- 22:22Speaker 3: else is write down three things I'm grateful for. Well,
- 22:25Speaker 3: bam bam, gid y up. Okay, So Penn transformational.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:30Speaker 3: Do you know immediately upon finishing at Pen exactly what.
- 22:34Speaker 2: You want to do with that education.
- 22:37Speaker 1: So I'm at Penn and it was interesting because I
- 22:40Speaker 1: was in a program where I would have to fly
- 22:43Speaker 1: to Philly for a week a month and then I'd
- 22:46Speaker 1: fly back to Vegas and I did that for a
- 22:47Speaker 1: year and a half. So in Vegas at that time,
- 22:50Speaker 1: I was full force focused on building out a fitness camp.
- 22:54Speaker 1: Fitness camp inevitably turned into a chain of four jibs,
- 22:58Speaker 1: and this is inevitably what opened up the door for
- 23:01Speaker 1: me to start working with Nike. Flashback two thousand and seven,
- 23:06Speaker 1: I saw the Secret for the first time, and me
- 23:10Speaker 1: and my friend created a vision board based off the
- 23:11Speaker 1: Secret and I put the Swoosh up on there and
- 23:14Speaker 1: I started reaching out to the Swoosh And for six years,
- 23:18Speaker 1: they never spoke to me. And then all of a sudden,
- 23:21Speaker 1: twenty fourteen, somebody from Nike was in Las Vegas and
- 23:27Speaker 1: they asked who was doing innovative stuff in the human
- 23:30Speaker 1: performance space and fusing mindset into the workouts. So this
- 23:33Speaker 1: is how Penn all of sudden inserts and they came
- 23:38Speaker 1: did a workout and that was like my entrance into Nike.
- 23:42Speaker 1: And so it wasn't like I had exactly the right
- 23:48Speaker 1: direction with how everything was going to play out. I
- 23:52Speaker 1: just continue to trust the feeling, continue to trust the vision,
- 23:56Speaker 1: continue to trust this quote by Ember that says, there's
- 24:00Speaker 1: nothing capricious in nature. The implanting of a desire means
- 24:04Speaker 1: that its gratification is in the constitution of the creature
- 24:07Speaker 1: that feels knowing that, like, these visions that I've been
- 24:10Speaker 1: given are not there to tease me. I have to
- 24:13Speaker 1: trust them, and as long as I do the work
- 24:14Speaker 1: and show up with heart, They're going to show up somehow.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Some way, somehow, some way.
- 24:22Speaker 3: It's so funny because that story we were I mean,
- 24:25Speaker 3: Joe was on the show recently as well, and we
- 24:27Speaker 3: were talking about Joe Holder and how like he ended
- 24:30Speaker 3: up at Nike. It's always like someone just happens to
- 24:32Speaker 3: be around. It just happens to be someone like stumbles
- 24:35Speaker 3: upon you, and it's totally one of those stars align moments.
- 24:39Speaker 3: You never know who's listening, who's watching, who you're inspiring,
- 24:44Speaker 3: who you're impacting, And it doesn't matter if you know
- 24:47Speaker 3: you want to say like, well, no one quote unquote
- 24:50Speaker 3: follows me. It doesn't matter. You walk down the hallway,
- 24:52Speaker 3: you get in the elevator, and you have the opportunity
- 24:55Speaker 3: to impact absolutely anyone. So you have the choice then
- 24:59Speaker 3: on how you want to show up the minute that
- 25:01Speaker 3: you step out the door, or maybe you don't even
- 25:03Speaker 3: need to step out the door, right Like, how do
- 25:05Speaker 3: you want to show up? And it goes back to
- 25:07Speaker 3: what we were saying before about the concept of like
- 25:10Speaker 3: who do you want to be?
- 25:12Speaker 2: Who do you want to be? Start there and then
- 25:15Speaker 2: act accordingly.
- 25:16Speaker 4: That's a that's a bar right there.
- 25:18Speaker 3: It's a bar quote quote Bam, you start these four
- 25:22Speaker 3: gyms and ultimately someone from Nike finds you. How does
- 25:28Speaker 3: that mix things up for you once that happens.
- 25:31Speaker 1: So the gyms were an incredible journey. It started with one.
- 25:35Speaker 1: One grew to two, two, grew to us opening up
- 25:39Speaker 1: a wellness space at Zappo's headquarters in Las Vegas, and
- 25:43Speaker 1: it just continued to blossom. And I did a couple
- 25:47Speaker 1: of things. One vice is unchecked when success comes, will
- 25:55Speaker 1: only bring them right back to the surface. So there's
- 25:59Speaker 1: there's a a quote that one of my mentors told me.
- 26:02Speaker 1: He says, don't wait to be successful to act successful.
- 26:05Speaker 1: So all of a sudden, all the success started coming in,
- 26:08Speaker 1: and also it started to really show me where I
- 26:12Speaker 1: still needed a lot of deep work. And what that
- 26:16Speaker 1: did is it opened up the doors for me to
- 26:18Speaker 1: really start to go deeper, which inevitably led me to yoga.
- 26:23Speaker 1: So twenty twelve to twenty sixteen, Gym's opened up. Twenty fifteen,
- 26:29Speaker 1: we win Business of the Year, Mind Body Bold Business
- 26:32Speaker 1: of the Year, twenty fourteen, signed a Nike. Everything is
- 26:36Speaker 1: like just blowing up. I'm traveling, I'm training. The life
- 26:42Speaker 1: that I once thought, the life that I once dreamed of,
- 26:46Speaker 1: is now in the palm of my hands, or I
- 26:49Speaker 1: thought that I wanted. And I realized sitting on the
- 26:54Speaker 1: balcony of my condo one day in twenty sixteen, that
- 27:01Speaker 1: I was still kind of empty inside, Like I spent
- 27:06Speaker 1: all these years focusing on building the dream, becoming like
- 27:10Speaker 1: this top trainer, working with like the top brands, traveling
- 27:14Speaker 1: the world, making money and all that, but I still
- 27:17Speaker 1: felt off. And that's what opened the doors up for
- 27:19Speaker 1: me to go to Bali and I stepped into a
- 27:21Speaker 1: yoga class. And once I stepped into that yoga class,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I actually the yoga teacher came up to me after
- 27:26Speaker 1: the class and said that I have no idea what's
- 27:29Speaker 1: going on on my inside, and that I need to
- 27:31Speaker 1: focus in and tune in, and that yoga could be
- 27:34Speaker 1: that pathway.
- 27:34Speaker 4: And so that was the.
- 27:37Speaker 1: Opening for me to step into the yoga space, which
- 27:41Speaker 1: inevitably led me to walking away from my gyms and
- 27:44Speaker 1: studying abroad and living abroad and traveling to go deeper
- 27:49Speaker 1: into that deep desire to find inner wealth rather than
- 27:53Speaker 1: outer wealth.
- 27:54Speaker 3: Yeah, it's when you get to that moment when you
- 28:00Speaker 3: I have everything I want, but I still feel empty.
- 28:04Speaker 3: Can you describe what that realization felt like for you?
- 28:09Speaker 2: Was it scary?
- 28:11Speaker 1: It was not only scary, it was like it was
- 28:13Speaker 1: an existential crisis on.
- 28:16Speaker 4: The highest level. All those years.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I was told, like, you get this, you get that,
- 28:21Speaker 1: and then you're going to be happy. And those are
- 28:23Speaker 1: the road maps that all of my vision boards and
- 28:25Speaker 1: my dreams and even my visions led me to imagine
- 28:30Speaker 1: some kid from the streets now owns one of the
- 28:32Speaker 1: top gyms in Vegas. Now he's traveling the world. Now
- 28:37Speaker 1: all these things are in play, and I'm sitting on
- 28:39Speaker 1: my balcony and I'm just like, I don't feel any
- 28:43Speaker 1: different than when I was on the streets. That was
- 28:45Speaker 1: a really big aha moment for me that something wasn't right.
- 28:50Speaker 1: I remember, in fact, I had about two hundred pairs
- 28:53Speaker 1: of nikes at that time, when I used to not
- 28:55Speaker 1: even be able TOFD nikes.
- 28:57Speaker 4: And so.
- 29:00Speaker 1: That moment right there is scary because two things happen,
- 29:05Speaker 1: like Young Santiago and the Alchemists as he's working in
- 29:09Speaker 1: the crystal shop. You either go on the journey or
- 29:12Speaker 1: you don't. And so I took the leap. And in
- 29:15Speaker 1: taking the leap, I always say, if I would have
- 29:18Speaker 1: known it would have been as hard as it has been,
- 29:20Speaker 1: I would never have taken the leap. But I'm so
- 29:22Speaker 1: grateful that I took the leap because it was crazy
- 29:25Speaker 1: to walk away from societal validation towards something that people
- 29:30Speaker 1: had no idea about.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to talk to you
- 29:38Speaker 3: about my lovely sponsors, Welcome Bandit running to the Hurdle family. Now,

- 32:34Speaker 3: Personal training made modern only on Future. Let's get back
- 32:39Speaker 3: to it. I have to ask, because you said that
- 32:51Speaker 3: the vices can resurface, what were the vices that resurfaced
- 32:56Speaker 3: for you?
- 32:56Speaker 1: Yeah, so a lot of you know, growing up in poverty,
- 33:01Speaker 1: it's like post traumatic stress the streets. Although it wouldn't
- 33:05Speaker 1: never be claimed like that. When we have people who
- 33:07Speaker 1: are served in the military, there's a lot of resources,
- 33:10Speaker 1: but when you grow up in the streets, it's kind
- 33:12Speaker 1: of like, uh, yeah, they should have done better, they
- 33:14Speaker 1: should have known better. We're not given mental health tools,
- 33:19Speaker 1: we're not given resources. This is why a lot of
- 33:21Speaker 1: people slip into drugs and vices and women or whatever
- 33:25Speaker 1: that may be. And so me come in full circle
- 33:29Speaker 1: and then having money, I realized that there was still
- 33:32Speaker 1: deep levels of depression, there were deep levels of anxiety,
- 33:36Speaker 1: There were deep levels of me trying to fill wounds
- 33:39Speaker 1: through spending a lot of money and not having a
- 33:41Speaker 1: healthy relationship with money. There was all types of anxious
- 33:46Speaker 1: avoidant attachment styles. There was codependency, there was savior complexes.
- 33:51Speaker 1: There was all these things that started surfacing more and
- 33:54Speaker 1: more the more quote unquote societally validated.
- 33:58Speaker 4: I became.
- 33:59Speaker 1: Luckily I had and have the I've always had the
- 34:07Speaker 1: deep desire to excavate what doesn't feel right, and so
- 34:13Speaker 1: I always say, it's like it took eighteen years for
- 34:18Speaker 1: me to become like an overnight healed story, Like it
- 34:23Speaker 1: was a lot of excavation, and so all of that
- 34:26Speaker 1: stuff came up, and it came up full force, and
- 34:29Speaker 1: I had to really sit with it and deal with it.
- 34:31Speaker 1: And this is also one of the reasons why when
- 34:33Speaker 1: I sat on that balcony that day, I was like,
- 34:34Speaker 1: why do I feel so off? And so twenty sixteen
- 34:39Speaker 1: when I walked away, put everything in storage, moved to Bali, Indonesia,
- 34:44Speaker 1: and since then I've lived in Bali, Hawaii, Thai, lamp
- 34:47Speaker 1: At Eru, and you know, it been on the journey.
- 34:50Speaker 1: I would say that it took after that twenty sixteen
- 34:53Speaker 1: to probably twenty twenty one that I was able to
- 34:59Speaker 1: do enough deep introspection and work and have enough space
- 35:03Speaker 1: to actually like put those things to rest or either
- 35:08Speaker 1: transmute those things into personal power or as a means
- 35:12Speaker 1: to like really harness my purpose. So it's been a
- 35:14Speaker 1: lot of deep work. You know, they say that if
- 35:17Speaker 1: a flower is not blooming, you don't change the flower,
- 35:19Speaker 1: you change the environment. And so I was inevitably in
- 35:22Speaker 1: a space where I was not blooming anymore. So I
- 35:25Speaker 1: had to change the soil that I was in, and
- 35:27Speaker 1: that revolved me going on this journey to expand my
- 35:32Speaker 1: perspective beyond the Western mind and a lot of When
- 35:40Speaker 1: I took the leap, I was like, I'm going to
- 35:42Speaker 1: lose everything I did. I lost my gym, I got
- 35:45Speaker 1: sued for six hundred and fifty thousand dollars plus, and
- 35:49Speaker 1: I thought I was going to lose all my connects
- 35:51Speaker 1: with like you know, the Swoosh Nike, with all the
- 35:55Speaker 1: stuff that I built. And it was funny about a
- 35:59Speaker 1: year and a half later, I'm still in the space
- 36:02Speaker 1: with all of these you know, companies and a lot
- 36:06Speaker 1: of old clients. And what happened is they started becoming
- 36:09Speaker 1: really interested in like what I was doing overseas, and
- 36:14Speaker 1: so I put together some proposals and started to like
- 36:19Speaker 1: plan my attack on how I could actually start sharing
- 36:21Speaker 1: some of the wisdom from the East with the West.
- 36:25Speaker 1: And so twenty seventeen twenty eighteen is when we really
- 36:27Speaker 1: started to, like for me to bring yoga back into
- 36:31Speaker 1: the communities and into the brands that I was working
- 36:33Speaker 1: for working with before that, And all of a sudden,
- 36:35Speaker 1: all these doors opened up that were beyond my vision board.
- 36:40Speaker 1: It was like the vision board was like the first level,
- 36:43Speaker 1: and then there was beyond the vision board. And I
- 36:45Speaker 1: love to say, like, what if the limit to your
- 36:47Speaker 1: sky was just the beginning of your universe? So like
- 36:51Speaker 1: for me, what I my grandest imagination was actually just
- 36:56Speaker 1: the beginning for like what guy I have for me? Yeah,
- 36:59Speaker 1: that's been the last three to four years, is just
- 37:02Speaker 1: being in that space.
- 37:03Speaker 4: You know.
- 37:03Speaker 1: I've lived abroad since twenty sixteen, and I've worked in
- 37:09Speaker 1: the West yea, And so I go to the east,
- 37:13Speaker 1: I go to the south. I haven't been up north yet,
- 37:15Speaker 1: but I want to go up this a little cold
- 37:17Speaker 1: up there. But and then I bring these insights and
- 37:23Speaker 1: teachings back to the West.
- 37:24Speaker 4: And what is interesting is people.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Sometimes ask me, like what's your motivation or like how
- 37:32Speaker 1: did you really like find your truth or your teachings. Honestly,
- 37:38Speaker 1: it's selfishly been a twenty plus. You're healing journey for me,
- 37:42Speaker 1: and all I'm doing is sharing what has worked for
- 37:46Speaker 1: me as I've healed myself from being a broken human
- 37:49Speaker 1: from the situation I grew up in to a more
- 37:53Speaker 1: whole human.
- 37:54Speaker 2: You're doing my job for me.
- 37:56Speaker 3: People sometimes ask me, I'm like, okay, please keep going.
- 37:59Speaker 3: What else do they ask you? What would you say
- 38:01Speaker 3: that your purpose is love?
- 38:05Speaker 2: Just love?
- 38:05Speaker 4: Love? Love is my mission?
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 38:08Speaker 1: I was in Brazil and shout out to my former
- 38:11Speaker 1: partner Alex soul Sister incredible Yogi.
- 38:15Speaker 4: She broke up with me.
- 38:18Speaker 1: And we were talking and this was this was like
- 38:23Speaker 1: about a year endo my yoga journey, and she was
- 38:27Speaker 1: she was saying like, you're always on your mission, but
- 38:30Speaker 1: nobody knows what your mission is and you never have
- 38:33Speaker 1: time for love. And so it put me in this
- 38:37Speaker 1: introspective state and I was just like, all right, Well,
- 38:39Speaker 1: what what really matters at the end of the day,
- 38:43Speaker 1: what do we all want? Like, wherever you go in
- 38:46Speaker 1: the world doesn't matter where you go. What is it
- 38:50Speaker 1: we all want? It doesn't matter what class you come from,
- 38:53Speaker 1: doesn't matter how much money you got in your bank account.
- 38:55Speaker 1: And the truth is love, love it, Love is it.
- 38:58Speaker 1: And I was told that if your mission is not
- 39:02Speaker 1: so big that you'll probably never achieve it, it's not
- 39:04Speaker 1: big enough. And so when I declare love is my mission,
- 39:08Speaker 1: it was like the universe was like, oh, oh, this
- 39:10Speaker 1: is your mission. Through everything at me to be like,
- 39:14Speaker 1: maybe I should not have that as my mission, but
- 39:17Speaker 1: that's that's truly my purpose. That's truly my mission is
- 39:20Speaker 1: to understand love, love for myself, love for other people,
- 39:26Speaker 1: love for this planet, and love. It just says anchoring
- 39:33Speaker 1: energy that moves this world, you know, Muhammad A. Lisa's
- 39:37Speaker 1: service to others is the rent we pay for our
- 39:40Speaker 1: time here on earth. May Angelo says, people are going
- 39:43Speaker 1: to forget what we said, people are going to forget
- 39:44Speaker 1: what we did, but they'll never forget how we made
- 39:46Speaker 1: them feel. The general thread I feel that legacies are
- 39:51Speaker 1: made from that. Truly, last is love. That's the ripple
- 39:57Speaker 1: and that I want to be a part of. And
- 39:58Speaker 1: if I can just play once small piece in that,
- 40:02Speaker 1: that's that's enough for me.
- 40:05Speaker 3: You mentioned that when you made the pivot into doing
- 40:10Speaker 3: more yoga and incorporating yoga into your practice and bringing
- 40:13Speaker 3: these teachings from West to East, that a lot of
- 40:17Speaker 3: doors opened for you, including a pivot or a shift
- 40:22Speaker 3: perhaps in the work that you had been doing at
- 40:24Speaker 3: the time with Nike. How does it feel for you
- 40:27Speaker 3: to be a person of color in a space that
- 40:31Speaker 3: conventionally may not be doused with a lot of color.
- 40:37Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a great question.
- 40:39Speaker 1: So in the West it's not as ethnically diverse.
- 40:45Speaker 4: You go to the East.
- 40:47Speaker 1: You know, my time in India, it's all color out there, right.
- 40:52Speaker 1: But when I talk about or when we speak of
- 40:55Speaker 1: like the shoulders of the giants that were standing on
- 40:58Speaker 1: from an ancestry stamp, I feel that it is my responsibility
- 41:04Speaker 1: and duty with the opportunity that I have as a
- 41:06Speaker 1: black man in two thousand and two, to be able
- 41:09Speaker 1: to travel the world the way I travel, I take
- 41:13Speaker 1: it very seriously and I move with an urgency because
- 41:19Speaker 1: not only am I so fortunate and blessed to be
- 41:22Speaker 1: able to travel and to go to Peru and Bali
- 41:25Speaker 1: in India, but we're also reclaiming so many lost teachings
- 41:30Speaker 1: that we've lost just from years of fear and division,
- 41:36Speaker 1: and you know, people not being in a line with love,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and so there's a deep responsibility that I feel I have,
- 41:49Speaker 1: and I.
- 41:52Speaker 4: Just want to share the.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Tools with as many people as possible. One of the
- 41:59Speaker 1: books that just inspire me so much I've read it
- 42:01Speaker 1: for the second time is The Narrative of a Slave
- 42:03Speaker 1: by Frederick Douglas, and he talks about the fact that,
- 42:06Speaker 1: like once upon a time, it was illegal to even
- 42:10Speaker 1: teach slaves to read, and the fact that you know,
- 42:15Speaker 1: we have access to the world's information now and all
- 42:19Speaker 1: the mystery schools are unlocked, and literally the click of
- 42:22Speaker 1: a button, we can tap into any type of esoteric teaching,
- 42:26Speaker 1: from yoga to tai chi to martial arts. It would
- 42:29Speaker 1: be a disservice to not to take full advantage of it.
- 42:35Speaker 1: My grandma, and it's a whole different story, but I
- 42:38Speaker 1: met my father for the first time when I was
- 42:39Speaker 1: twenty seven years old, and meeting him and then meeting
- 42:43Speaker 1: my grandma. My grandma was actually one of the first
- 42:45Speaker 1: black nurses in Vegas, and she used to have to
- 42:48Speaker 1: go through the colored entrance at the hospital.
- 42:52Speaker 4: And so.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Even sitting here having this conversation with you, coming in
- 42:56Speaker 1: from Costa Rica, I'm very well, honor, and know that
- 43:01Speaker 1: I'm so blessed to be able to do that, and
- 43:04Speaker 1: I take this opportunity very serious.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 43:09Speaker 3: I also think that this resonates with the concept that
- 43:15Speaker 3: in order oftentimes on the show, I'm speaking with women,
- 43:18Speaker 3: but I do dabble with a male guest from time
- 43:20Speaker 3: to time, and you know, we say often like, in
- 43:23Speaker 3: order to be her, you need to see her. And
- 43:25Speaker 3: so for you to be in this place for other
- 43:29Speaker 3: individuals of color who may not have felt represented in
- 43:33Speaker 3: their practice previously, to be able to look to you
- 43:35Speaker 3: and learn from you is also a beautiful opportunity. So
- 43:39Speaker 3: as much as you are grateful for this opportunity, there
- 43:42Speaker 3: are without a doubt people that are grateful for you,
- 43:45Speaker 3: which is just a really awesome thing.
- 43:48Speaker 4: Thank you, of course.
- 43:49Speaker 3: And so this all comes back now, as I said
- 43:52Speaker 3: at the top, to this latest venture that you have
- 43:56Speaker 3: with Core Power Yoga.
- 43:59Speaker 2: How did that come to be?
- 44:00Speaker 1: Yeah, shout out to Core Power Yoga. Such an amazing
- 44:04Speaker 1: innovative company. And it's been just an honor to align
- 44:09Speaker 1: with a brand that truly is galvanizing love through movement
- 44:15Speaker 1: but through their philosophy. And so two last year, twenty
- 44:20Speaker 1: twenty two, I got a message in the default inbox
- 44:28Speaker 1: on Instagram, like the one that you almost never see,
- 44:30Speaker 1: the one.
- 44:31Speaker 2: That you forget exactly yeah, yeah, yeah, yes.
- 44:33Speaker 4: And it was Sarah Choi.
- 44:36Speaker 1: She's a CMO slash COO over at Core Power Yoga,
- 44:39Speaker 1: and she was like, Hey, what are your thoughts about
- 44:43Speaker 1: doing a keynote on love for our company? All hands
- 44:48Speaker 1: and we started some conversations and then the doors opened
- 44:53Speaker 1: up and I was given the opportunity to do a
- 44:55Speaker 1: keynote on love, which almost didn't happen because it was
- 44:59Speaker 1: a week after mother Past. But one of the things
- 45:02Speaker 1: that I wanted to do last year, and this is
- 45:04Speaker 1: why I entered the God Pocket quote unquote, was I
- 45:07Speaker 1: wanted to honor her, and so I went ahead and
- 45:10Speaker 1: I did this keynote, and the keynote opened up some
- 45:13Speaker 1: doors for me to come out to Denver. And then
- 45:16Speaker 1: when I was in Denver, they started, you know, they
- 45:19Speaker 1: brought me into their new class format. And being that
- 45:23Speaker 1: I've been in the sports performance space but also you know,
- 45:26Speaker 1: a thousand hours of yoga and been deep into yoga
- 45:29Speaker 1: space for a long time, I was able to like
- 45:32Speaker 1: offer a unique perspective that really like gelled with the
- 45:37Speaker 1: current creation that they were creating, and so it went
- 45:39Speaker 1: from literally an Instagram DM to like me collaborating in
- 45:44Speaker 1: a really deep way in the last four months really
- 45:46Speaker 1: helping Core Power Yoga create Core Power Strength X as
- 45:50Speaker 1: their first new class offering in ten years as a
- 45:55Speaker 1: way to help people truly strengthen their mind, body, spirit
- 46:01Speaker 1: and to like further push their mission forward, which is
- 46:06Speaker 1: to empower love from the inside out. And so it's
- 46:09Speaker 1: been incredible to just dive back into the corporate space
- 46:15Speaker 1: in a way that is heart open and in a
- 46:19Speaker 1: way that infuses all the things I love, which is mindset, strength, breadth, intention,
- 46:25Speaker 1: And it's felt like just a beautiful, beautiful relationship that
- 46:30Speaker 1: we've been able to like cultivate over the last you know,
- 46:34Speaker 1: six months now, but four months in deep project mode
- 46:36Speaker 1: and to be able to, like now in twenty twenty three,
- 46:40Speaker 1: offer this new class format to the world as a
- 46:42Speaker 1: mechanism for people to really like build strength on the mat,
- 46:46Speaker 1: but also build strength off the mat, to like be
- 46:49Speaker 1: stronger in their lives, to be stronger in their relationships,
- 46:52Speaker 1: to be stronger in their why and their purpose.
- 46:55Speaker 4: I'm all about it. It's just it gets me so excited.
- 46:58Speaker 2: How do you get stronger in your purpose?
- 47:02Speaker 1: It's a great question. So I'm going to give you
- 47:06Speaker 1: a couple answers. Oh, I love, I love multiple plas struggle.
- 47:12Speaker 1: The struggle makes us, makes us stronger. I always ask
- 47:17Speaker 1: my clients, can you love yourself enough to struggle a
- 47:21Speaker 1: lot of times we want to bypass the struggle because
- 47:25Speaker 1: it doesn't feel good. Self love asks us to give
- 47:30Speaker 1: ourselves what we need, not always what we want. What
- 47:34Speaker 1: we want feels good. I was just at a cafe
- 47:36Speaker 1: down the way and I wanted this donut so bad.
- 47:40Speaker 1: It felt good, but it wasn't what I needed. Now,
- 47:43Speaker 1: the struggle was real, and I had a If you
- 47:45Speaker 1: look on my Instagram, there's some donuts right now.
- 47:47Speaker 4: I just took a picture.
- 47:50Speaker 1: So allowing ourselves, loving ourselves enough to struggle, what a
- 47:54Speaker 1: beautiful metaphor. Like in the gym on the map, there's
- 47:59Speaker 1: going to be it's where we struggle, where you're met
- 48:02Speaker 1: with that metaphorical resistance point. And the longer we can
- 48:06Speaker 1: stay at what my mentor, doctor Guadanoli says is the
- 48:09Speaker 1: edge of stretch, the more potential is activated. So just
- 48:15Speaker 1: to break it down for you, there's this thing called
- 48:17Speaker 1: challenge points theory, and doctor Gudanoli says that you have
- 48:20Speaker 1: the comfort zone, you have the panic zone, and you
- 48:23Speaker 1: have the stretch zone. You go too deep in the
- 48:25Speaker 1: panic zone, it's all bad. Stay in the comfort zone,
- 48:27Speaker 1: nothing changes. But the closer you can get to the
- 48:30Speaker 1: edge of stretch, that's the line that divides the panic
- 48:34Speaker 1: zone and the stretch zone. That's the magic spot across
- 48:37Speaker 1: the board. And so for people who are really trying
- 48:40Speaker 1: to like build strength, giving themselves that opportunity to struggle.
- 48:47Speaker 1: The other thing, and I'll pull this from just my
- 48:50Speaker 1: time at PEN, what they have found is the more
- 48:52Speaker 1: we focus on our strengths, the less our weaknesses become apparent.
- 48:57Speaker 4: And this is like.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Pretty revolutionary in schooling and in teaching and education, and
- 49:02Speaker 1: even in corporate culture. A lot of times we want
- 49:04Speaker 1: to focus on what's wrong with us instead of what's
- 49:07Speaker 1: right with us. And so for like as a foundation,
- 49:12Speaker 1: allowing oneself to struggle, but then also getting really clear
- 49:15Speaker 1: on what one's strengths are and leaning into those, allowing
- 49:19Speaker 1: those strengths to become stronger, inevitably are going to start
- 49:22Speaker 1: to offset those preconceived weaknesses. Or possible actual weaknesses. And
- 49:28Speaker 1: then thirdly, I think that the most important thing to
- 49:30Speaker 1: really build potent strong strength is to have a team
- 49:35Speaker 1: around you. When we look at the greatest achievers of
- 49:38Speaker 1: our time, they never did it alone. You look at
- 49:41Speaker 1: Lebron James, he has an entire team. You look at
- 49:43Speaker 1: Muhammad Ali, an entire team, Serena Williams an entire team.
- 49:48Speaker 1: We get to build a team around of objective, heart
- 49:53Speaker 1: centric individuals that are all rooting for us to be
- 49:58Speaker 1: our best. And what is team look like. Maybe it's
- 50:01Speaker 1: just some really good friends, or maybe it's a therapist,
- 50:04Speaker 1: a life coach, a nutritionist, a trainer. It's really about
- 50:08Speaker 1: asking yourself what do you need to amplify your strengthen
- 50:14Speaker 1: your potential to the highest level possible. And it also
- 50:17Speaker 1: in the same vein of like building our team, it's
- 50:22Speaker 1: also about also cutting the players that no longer serve us.
- 50:25Speaker 1: See you Yeah, And I put people in three categories, noses, anchors,
- 50:29Speaker 1: and lifelines. Noises are people that energetically strangle you out.
- 50:34Speaker 1: Anchors are people that weigh you down, and lifelines are
- 50:36Speaker 1: people that build you up.
- 50:38Speaker 4: And in a time and.
- 50:39Speaker 1: Place where we don't have a lot of time, and
- 50:41Speaker 1: our potential is asking us to truly step into it.
- 50:44Speaker 1: Lifelines are only.
- 50:48Speaker 3: This is like a full circle moment from the beginning
- 50:50Speaker 3: of our chat when we were kind of insinuating or
- 50:53Speaker 3: talking about how you get away from the anchors, right,
- 50:55Speaker 3: Because sometimes it can feel as though we have such
- 50:59Speaker 3: a strong tie or devotion maybe to individuals who don't
- 51:04Speaker 3: serve us or don't act as a lifeline when we
- 51:07Speaker 3: need them the most, right, And that can truly be
- 51:11Speaker 3: a challenging thing to do.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, to step away, it can be really really hard.
- 51:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:18Speaker 1: And I think the key, the cornerstone, the master key
- 51:24Speaker 1: of it all, is self worth. When we really start
- 51:28Speaker 1: to see ourselves as worth something, and we start to
- 51:30Speaker 1: treat ourselves as valuable, we start to really advocate for ourselves.
- 51:35Speaker 1: We start to stop the things that are holding us back,
- 51:38Speaker 1: We start to cut out the people that no longer
- 51:41Speaker 1: serve us, We start to open up the doors that
- 51:44Speaker 1: inevitably strengthen our being. And that's where it really begins
- 51:51Speaker 1: to get magical, because the truth is, we've all been
- 51:54Speaker 1: gifted these one of the kind expressions that we are
- 51:57Speaker 1: and I think the goal of us being here is
- 51:59Speaker 1: to like fall in love with what it is we are,
- 52:02Speaker 1: and the sooner we fall in love with what it
- 52:04Speaker 1: is we are, we can really get on to like
- 52:06Speaker 1: celebrating this this crazy I call it likeful wasca, I said, ayahuasca,
- 52:13Speaker 1: the psychedelic experience of love that we've been gifted.
- 52:17Speaker 3: It's also when you fall in love who it is
- 52:20Speaker 3: that you are, and you celebrate who you are, you
- 52:22Speaker 3: become better advocating for yourself like you said, and also
- 52:27Speaker 3: exercising your boundaries, like it doesn't become such a maybe
- 52:32Speaker 3: internal battle or struggle to ask yourself if you should
- 52:36Speaker 3: stay true to what it is that you want. Maybe
- 52:38Speaker 3: when you're in a situation that's beckoning for you to flex.
- 52:42Speaker 3: It could be as simple as maybe I don't know,
- 52:44Speaker 3: being out on a date and one person. Maybe your
- 52:48Speaker 3: date wants you to stay for longer, but you know
- 52:50Speaker 3: you have a commitment in the morning.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Well, when you honor.
- 52:53Speaker 3: What it is that you want and who it is
- 52:56Speaker 3: that you are, you don't feel so maybe guilty or
- 52:59Speaker 3: have hazard about like no, I'm out yeah, and you
- 53:02Speaker 3: understand that the people that are for you will support
- 53:05Speaker 3: you and the things that support you being the best
- 53:08Speaker 3: version of yourself. But again it takes kind of reps
- 53:13Speaker 3: to get to that place. It's like, how does how
- 53:15Speaker 3: does the muscle strengthen? Like you give it something to
- 53:17Speaker 3: push up against? Like how does our will strengthen? You
- 53:20Speaker 3: give it something to push up against? Yeah, And so
- 53:23Speaker 3: to get to that place where you feel comfortable, more
- 53:26Speaker 3: comfortable than perhaps previously exercising your boundaries, that is also
- 53:31Speaker 3: you getting one step closer to being in this place
- 53:34Speaker 3: that we're talking about being life celebration right.
- 53:36Speaker 4: Absolutely for sure.
- 53:38Speaker 1: And this is why like movement is so powerful because
- 53:44Speaker 1: beyond the body, like if we even talk about it
- 53:46Speaker 1: from like a yoga standpoint, they actually say, we have
- 53:49Speaker 1: five bodies. You have the physical body, the mental body,
- 53:54Speaker 1: the energetic body, the wisdom body, and the bliss body.
- 53:56Speaker 1: And the physical body is the access point through the
- 53:59Speaker 1: soma into the rest of those bodies. And it's like
- 54:02Speaker 1: the struggle that we can create through a curated environment
- 54:09Speaker 1: like a workout class, like going on a run, like
- 54:14Speaker 1: martial arts, these all build the strength and fortitudes who
- 54:19Speaker 1: inevitably begin to stand stronger in our boundaries where we
- 54:24Speaker 1: then say, or there's a quote by my brother Mark Groves.
- 54:28Speaker 1: He says walls keep people out, but boundaries show people
- 54:32Speaker 1: where the door is. And also that nobody that truly
- 54:36Speaker 1: loves you will ever get mad at you for loving yourself.
- 54:40Speaker 1: And so this is the work. And then yoga. My
- 54:45Speaker 1: master teacher, Sri dar Bameitro would say, do the sodna
- 54:49Speaker 1: unlock the cities. So the sodna is intentional practice, and
- 54:53Speaker 1: the cities are the gift when we show up and.
- 54:55Speaker 4: Do the work.
- 54:57Speaker 1: The work works, but you got to do the work,
- 55:00Speaker 1: and inevitably it up levels our ability to create environments
- 55:04Speaker 1: for ourselves that are truly harmonious rather than something that
- 55:07Speaker 1: is going to continue to loop us into, like lower
- 55:11Speaker 1: levels of our expression.
- 55:14Speaker 3: When you look in the mirror, what do you see
- 55:16Speaker 3: looking back at you?
- 55:18Speaker 4: Love period? Yeah?
- 55:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I could say like milk chocolate brother
- 55:25Speaker 1: that some swagger.
- 55:27Speaker 4: But.
- 55:29Speaker 3: Man, I mean when I look in the mirror, I
- 55:33Speaker 3: see all that I've become, but I also see my
- 55:37Speaker 3: younger self.
- 55:38Speaker 2: Yeah that is one hundred percent.
- 55:39Speaker 3: When I see what I look in the mirror, I
- 55:41Speaker 3: see how far I've come by looking at her, and
- 55:46Speaker 3: also my potential on the other side of that. And
- 55:52Speaker 3: it's interesting to hear that what excites you, what your
- 55:57Speaker 3: purpose is, what you see all three of those to
- 56:00Speaker 3: be the same, with the emphasis that you understand there's
- 56:04Speaker 3: still more to embody under that category, right, because to
- 56:10Speaker 3: some they may hear that and think like, well, if
- 56:14Speaker 3: you're already here, what happens next?
- 56:17Speaker 2: So what happens next?
- 56:19Speaker 1: It's a process of blossoming and of becoming. Yeah, and
- 56:23Speaker 1: I spoke about this recently that the orange or the orange,
- 56:31Speaker 1: the full expression of the orange tree, doesn't look at
- 56:34Speaker 1: the seed as inferior. It knows that the entire process
- 56:40Speaker 1: from seed to orange was necessary. And I feel like
- 56:43Speaker 1: we are all in a process of blossoming and of becoming.
- 56:46Speaker 1: So there's no destination. And that was the existential crisis
- 56:50Speaker 1: I had when I was sitting in my condo in Vegas.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Was I had a destination. I thought when I got
- 56:56Speaker 1: XYZ and was this level of body fat and this
- 57:01Speaker 1: level of success, I was going to be happy. And
- 57:04Speaker 1: I missed out on so many of the beautiful moments
- 57:06Speaker 1: on the way to that journey. I got to that
- 57:08Speaker 1: space and I wasn't even fulfilled. And so it's an expanding,
- 57:14Speaker 1: it's a it's an evolution, it's a blossoming of.
- 57:18Speaker 4: Where we are.
- 57:19Speaker 1: Over time, that continues to blossom and continues to show
- 57:22Speaker 1: us new shades of who it is we are. I
- 57:26Speaker 1: think it's important to have a mission. I think a
- 57:28Speaker 1: mission directs us. It brings our focus towards things that
- 57:34Speaker 1: are in alignment with that mission. So whatever a person's
- 57:37Speaker 1: mission is, like, have a mission, mission and intention is
- 57:41Speaker 1: the same thing. But when we're moving intentionally, it attunes
- 57:45Speaker 1: us in a way that is much more aligned than
- 57:49Speaker 1: when we don't have that. And I feel like I've
- 57:55Speaker 1: arrived to today and tomorrow I'm going to be a
- 57:59Speaker 1: different person. Try I'll arrive into that moment, and this
- 58:03Speaker 1: adventure that we are on called life is going to
- 58:06Speaker 1: continue to expand and show me different facets of that mission.
- 58:11Speaker 1: One thing that's crazy about love being my mission is
- 58:14Speaker 1: and what I've learned is in order to understand love,
- 58:18Speaker 1: I also have to understand what is not love. And
- 58:21Speaker 1: the universe has been dealing that up on a silver
- 58:25Speaker 1: platter to me for the last three to four years,
- 58:28Speaker 1: full force.
- 58:29Speaker 4: And so.
- 58:31Speaker 1: I guess the warning label of like going after your
- 58:34Speaker 1: mission is like once you declare your mission, the entire
- 58:38Speaker 1: universe will conspire to help that mission come to life,
- 58:42Speaker 1: you know, quoting Paolo Goyelo, And that means sometimes it'll
- 58:47Speaker 1: be challenges. I mean sometimes it'll be breakdowns. That means
- 58:50Speaker 1: they'll sometimes be struggles. But when we can look at
- 58:52Speaker 1: all of those and say thank you, that's when life,
- 58:54Speaker 1: I believe, really gets magical.
- 58:56Speaker 3: I could ask you what excites you right now, but
- 58:58Speaker 3: I feel like you're just going to say love, fatherhood.
- 59:02Speaker 2: Okay, talk to me about.
- 59:03Speaker 1: Fatherhood another aspect of love. Yeah. So my mother passing
- 59:11Speaker 1: away was an initiation. She was one of my best friends.
- 59:15Speaker 1: It was the first person really really close to me
- 59:17Speaker 1: that passed away. It was one of the most beautiful
- 59:20Speaker 1: experiences of my life, and it taught me so much.
- 59:24Speaker 1: It was like, oh, this is one of life's master
- 59:27Speaker 1: classes that you cannot sign up for. There's no degree
- 59:32Speaker 1: that comes from this, but this was so potent. I
- 59:38Speaker 1: feel like death and birth are two of life's most
- 59:42Speaker 1: potent teachers. And so a lot of people have asked
- 59:45Speaker 1: me as of late, what am I most excited about,
- 59:47Speaker 1: And what I'm most excited about is the journey in
- 59:50Speaker 1: the fatherhood and the journey into like taking all my
- 59:53Speaker 1: teachings and officially like bestowing them onto the next generation.
- 59:58Speaker 1: They say that it takes three generations to break out
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: of poverty. In the poverty mindset, my mother was the
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: first generation. I'm the second, so to officially break the
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: cycle of poverty in my family chain is everything to me.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's really special. How does that idea make you feel?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: Oh, it's incredible, It's incredible. But I do still have
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: some homies back in the streets that I'm gonna when
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: I do have children, they're gonna go like visit them
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: for a weekend, so they like make sure they have
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: a little bit of street swag and they're not completely like.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm so happy that we were able to
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: make this happen.
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: Yes, when you have an opportunity right now, knowing what
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: you know at this point, to offer yourself a piece
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: of advice. Let's go back when you thought you had
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: everything that you could ever want.
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: You thought that you were.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: At the place that was supposed to be what success
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: felt like and looked like, and you realize that you
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: were coming up empty. You have an opportunity to tell
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: him something right now during that Hurtle moment. What do
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: you tell him?
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: I say, Brandon, you're beautiful, and you get to love
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: yourself now as you are. You don't need to become
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: anything else. You don't need to change a thing about you.
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: You're perfect the way you are, imperfectly beautiful, and trust
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: that everything will work out. And if I could like
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: the anxiety, the challenges, the levels of like not feeling
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: worthy for so long took a toll, and so like
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: where I am now sitting in a place of really
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: deep self appreciation and worth, I feel that.
- 1:01:37Speaker 4: That's the advice I would give that.
- 1:01:39Speaker 3: Dude, How do the hurdlers follow along with you? How
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: do they keep up with you? Give us the deats?

- 1:04:11Speaker 3: when you're in a different city and you're like looking

- 1:04:15Speaker 3: a core power, like you know exactly what you're going
