Speaker 2: Challenge Benefiting Covenant House coming up September the 15th at
• 2:45
Speaker 2: the Coliseum and Convention Center. And we have Brianna Martin
• 2:49
Speaker 2: here and Chef Dennis Harris. To talk about it. Chef,
• 2:51
Speaker 2: we'll start with you. Good morning. Welcome to the show.
• 2:53
  Speaker 5: Good morning, sir.
• 2:54
Speaker 2: And Brianna, great to have you on the show again.
• 2:56
Speaker 2: You haven't been on in a while.
• 2:57
Speaker 6: Good morning, Dave. You are correct. We've got to fix that.
• 3:01
Speaker 2: You know where we are. Been here for 99 years now,
• 3:04
Speaker 2: as I told you in the green room. I have
• 3:06
Speaker 2: only been there half of that time now. But you're
• 3:08
Speaker 2: always welcome on the show. First of all, talk about
• 3:11
Speaker 2: the work of Covenant House. I want to talk about
• 3:13
Speaker 2: that first, and we'll talk about the events. What do
• 3:14
Speaker 2: these folks do? Sure.
• 3:16
Speaker 6: We are a social service nonprofit. that specializes in food, housing,
• 3:21
Speaker 6: and access to health care. We have been in the
• 3:24
Speaker 6: business over 45 years. So this is our 16th Annual
• 3:29
Speaker 6: Chefs Challenge, where we just bring what we call local
• 3:31
Speaker 6: celebrity chefs together to support a great cause. So we
• 3:37
Speaker 6: are looking forward to it. We've got a myriad of
• 3:40
Speaker 6: chefs participating this year. There are 12 chefs coming to
• 3:43
Speaker 6: the table to put together one delicious menu.
• 3:49
Speaker 2: And see, I'm a foodie. You know that. If you
• 3:51
Speaker 2: listen to me on the air on a regular basis,
• 3:53
Speaker 2: you know this. So try not to have me chewing
• 3:56
Speaker 2: on the new equipment here, okay?
• 3:58
Speaker 6: Listen, Dave, I'm going to do like I did with Jenny.
• 4:01
Speaker 6: I'm going to give you a sneak peek of this menu.
• 4:05
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 4:05
Speaker 6: And then you can chew on that paper and tell
• 4:07
Speaker 6: me what it tastes like.
• 4:08
  Speaker 2: All right.
• 4:09
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 4:10
Speaker 2: Chef Dennis, I appreciate you being here as well, making
• 4:12
Speaker 2: your debut with us here on the show. I believe
• 4:14
Speaker 2: you've not been on the show before, have you?
• 4:15
  Speaker 5: It's been a while. I mean, okay.
• 4:17
Speaker 2: It's great to have you on the show. Give us
• 4:21
Speaker 2: your bio, Chef Dennis.
• 4:23
Speaker 5: I've been a part of this event for probably 10 years.
• 4:26
Speaker 5: It is an awesome event to support and get behind.
• 4:30
Speaker 5: It's the one time a year where chefs actually get
• 4:32
Speaker 5: together and have a little camaraderie in the kitchen. As
• 4:37
Speaker 5: a chef, sometimes you're very busy and don't get to
• 4:39
Speaker 5: see other chefs in the industry because they're busy as well.
• 4:42
Speaker 5: This is that one opportunity a year that I can
• 4:45
Speaker 5: go in the kitchen and They're like, why are you
• 4:48
Speaker 5: and Chef Paul hugging so much?
• 4:51
Speaker 2: Because we haven't seen each other since the last one.
• 4:53
Speaker 2: All right. Talk about where you're a chef and talk
• 4:57
Speaker 2: about your background. How did you get into this whole
• 4:59
  Speaker 2: food game?
• 5:00
Speaker 5: I'm actually right now the director of operations slash executive
• 5:03
Speaker 5: chef at Sleepy Hollow. My previous was a 12-year tenure
• 5:07
Speaker 5: as the chef at Edgewood Country Club. And prior to that,
• 5:10
Speaker 5: Aubrey's Yorkshire Pub and Eatery in St. Albans. Okay.
• 5:13
Speaker 2: All right. So we got Chef Dennis, Chef Keith. Chef
• 5:19
Speaker 2: Todd Jones, General Manager Kevin Madison. He's with Black Sheep Burrito.
• 5:24
  Speaker 6: Correct.
• 5:25
  Speaker 2: Chef Terry Blevin.
• 5:27
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 5:27
Speaker 2: Where is Chef Terry from?
• 5:28
Speaker 6: She's a little bit ahead in cupcakes.
• 5:30
  Speaker 2: Okay.
• 5:31
  Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
• 5:31
Speaker 2: That's right. We've interviewed her on the show in the past.
• 5:34
Speaker 2: You know, she's like Paula Deen's personal cupcake maker.
• 5:38
Speaker 6: I have seen the pictures and heard the stories.
• 5:42
Speaker 2: Now, how cool is that, that Chef Paula Deen calls
• 5:45
Speaker 2: her when she wants cupcakes?
• 5:46
Speaker 6: It's really, really incredible. I mean, we have, I would,
• 5:50
Speaker 6: I like to call it some culinary artiste in our state.
• 5:55
Speaker 6: And you can clearly see by the menu that you're reading.
• 5:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, we're going to get to that in a minute.
• 6:01
Speaker 6: What we have here. And I hope people will come
• 6:03
Speaker 6: out and check out the showcase of our chefs.
• 6:07
Speaker 2: And we get Chef Chase Collier, restauranteer bruising.
• 6:10
Speaker 6: Yes, this is his first year participating, so I'm very
• 6:14
Speaker 6: happy to have Chef Chase.
• 6:15
Speaker 2: And he was nominated for a James Beard Award. Am
• 6:17
Speaker 2: I correct about that?
• 6:18
Speaker 6: I hope he joins us for years to come.
• 6:20
Speaker 2: All right, and Chef Betty Reed. Tell us about Chef
• 6:22
  Speaker 2: Betty Reed.
• 6:23
Speaker 6: Chef Betty comes to us from Embassy, so she's been
• 6:25
Speaker 6: over at Embassy. You know what's funny about Chef Betty?
• 6:28
Speaker 6: Chef Betty moves silently. When I tell you, she will
• 6:33
Speaker 6: swoop in. And drop off her things and then leave.
• 6:37
Speaker 6: She doesn't want to be in the picture. She doesn't
• 6:39
Speaker 6: want the accolades. She just truly enjoys participating in the event.
• 6:43
Speaker 6: And so sometimes I may never see Chef Betty.
• 6:46
Speaker 2: She does her stuff and leaves. Chef John Macklin. Tell
• 6:49
Speaker 2: me about Chef John Macklin.
• 6:51
Speaker 6: He's incredible. He is at Edgewood now. So he participated
• 6:57
Speaker 6: years ago before I sat at the helm by way
• 7:00
Speaker 6: of Mardi Gras Casino. So at that time, he was
• 7:03
Speaker 6: representing the casino cooking, but he's just now coming back
• 7:07
Speaker 6: to the table for us this year. So we're really excited. Now,
• 7:10
Speaker 6: he is making some pork belly. However, I don't eat pork,
• 7:16
Speaker 6: so I'm going to miss that. So everybody else will
• 7:18
Speaker 6: just have to tell me what it tastes like.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: You've got plenty other options down there.
• 7:21
  Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
• 7:22
Speaker 2: Chef Evan Wilson. Tell me about Chef Evan Wilson.
• 7:25
Speaker 6: Fazio's. He's Fazio's now. So Chef Evan has been with
• 7:29
Speaker 6: us for years. I love Chef Evan. Chef Evan truly
• 7:33
Speaker 6: enjoys the event, and I don't care where he goes.
• 7:35
Speaker 6: I don't care what restaurant he might pop up in.
• 7:38
Speaker 6: He's always going to be at the table. He always
• 7:40
Speaker 6: tells me, count me in.
• 7:41
  Speaker 7: I'm there.
• 7:41
Speaker 2: And Chef Morgan Morrison, of course, from Rock City. Chef
• 7:47
Speaker 2: Morgan and I go way, way back. She's from my hometown.
• 7:49
  Speaker 2: She's a Charleston girl now, but she's a Logan girl,
• 7:52
Speaker 2: just so you know.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: That is my girl. Love Chef Morgan. She truly loves
• 7:59
Speaker 6: Covenant House. She loves the community. She loves what she
• 8:02
Speaker 6: is doing. Have you seen her lately, this singing in
• 8:05
Speaker 6: Lincoln and all this.
• 8:06
Speaker 2: Stuff that she's been doing?
• 8:08
Speaker 6: Listen, I'm putting her on the spot right now. I
• 8:11
Speaker 6: want her to be picked up in that Lincoln. I
• 8:13
Speaker 6: want to sing. I can't sing, but I want to.
• 8:15
Speaker 2: Well, I'll go along with you if she picks us
• 8:18
  Speaker 2: up there.
• 8:19
Speaker 6: Okay, Chef Morgan, it's a challenge. Dave Allen, Breonna Martin,
• 8:24
Speaker 6: singing in the Lincoln.
• 8:25
  Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
• 8:26
Speaker 6: Megan Moses, you hear us? We're calling.
• 8:28
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:29
Speaker 6: We need that Lincoln ride.
• 8:30
  Speaker 2: A little trio.
• 8:31
  Speaker 6: That's right.
• 8:31
Speaker 3: We can do that.
• 8:32
Speaker 6: Maybe we can take Chef Dennis to go get his
• 8:35
Speaker 6: tattoo when we sell out the event.
• 8:38
Speaker 2: Let me get to one more chef here, and then
• 8:40
Speaker 2: we'll talk about this tattoo. Chef Paul Smith, I mean,
• 8:42
Speaker 2: does he need any introduction? He's Chef Paul. Okay. So you,
• 8:46
Speaker 2: Chef Dennis, have said that if this event sells out,
• 8:49
Speaker 2: you're going to get a tattoo, right?
• 8:50
  Speaker 8: Indeed.
• 8:51
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 8:51
Speaker 2: Tell us about the tattoo.
• 8:53
Speaker 5: It is a character that they created as part of
• 8:56
Speaker 5: the ad campaign for this year's event. This commemorates my
• 8:59
Speaker 5: 10th year doing it. And they're like, hey, chef, what
• 9:02
Speaker 5: if you sell out and you get this tattoo? And
• 9:05
Speaker 5: I'm just like, okay. All right.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: Now, do you have any tattoos?
• 9:10
  Speaker 5: I do.
• 9:11
  Speaker 2: I have some chef-themed tattoos. I didn't see any until
• 9:13
Speaker 2: you turned your arm.
• 9:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, I have a chef from South Park on my legs.
• 9:18
Speaker 2: All the good chefs are on there.
• 9:20
  Speaker 9: All right.
• 9:20
Speaker 2: So let's talk about the actual menu now. Chef Dennis,
• 9:23
Speaker 2: I'll start. I don't know if we have time to
• 9:25
Speaker 2: go through everything, but I'm going to start with you.
• 9:26
Speaker 2: What are you making?
• 9:27
  Speaker 5: I'm making a watermelon gazpacho.
• 9:29
Speaker 2: All right. Explain that to us.
• 9:30
Speaker 5: It's basically a watermelon-based cold soup with other vegetables inside.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: Very refreshing, very light, vegetarian-friendly. A lot of times I
• 9:40
Speaker 5: do these events, I kind of want everybody to experience
• 9:44
Speaker 5: what I make. So I try to make it gluten-free,
• 9:48
Speaker 5: all those things that people cannot eat. I try to
• 9:51
Speaker 5: do a dish that everyone can have.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: And Chef Keith's going to do the specialty dinner roll.
• 9:58
Speaker 2: Chef Todd Jones is going to get the Italian thing going.
• 10:01
Speaker 2: I'm not even going to pretend to know how to
• 10:03
Speaker 2: pronounce it unless you know. It's chicken.
• 10:05
  Speaker 5: Salt and vodka.
• 10:06
Speaker 2: Just like it looks.
• 10:07
  Speaker 1: Okay.
• 10:07
Speaker 2: All right. And explain what that is.
• 10:10
Speaker 5: Basically, it's a chicken breast with sage and prosciutto wrapped.
• 10:15
Speaker 2: Sorry, did I say that out loud?
• 10:17
  Speaker 10: No.
• 10:18
  Speaker 5: It's very good.
• 10:19
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 10:20
Speaker 2: And Chef Kevin Madison, of course, he is going to be,
• 10:23
Speaker 2: he's from Black Sheep Produce. He's doing a shrimp dish, right?
• 10:26
  Speaker 5: Shrimp ceviche.
• 10:27
Speaker 2: Ceviche. Now, what is shrimp ceviche?
• 10:29
Speaker 5: Basically, it's a citrus cured shrimp with peppers. It's really good. Okay.
• 10:35
  Speaker 5: All right.
• 10:36
Speaker 2: Of course, Chef Terry is going to be doing bruleed
• 10:39
Speaker 2: apple tart macaron. Now, is it macaron or macaroons?
• 10:43
  Speaker 5: Macaroons. Okay.
• 10:44
Speaker 2: I've seen it both ways. Brûlée' d apple tart macaroons and
• 10:50
Speaker 2: red wine chocolate truffles. Suddenly, my wife, if she's listening
• 10:54
Speaker 2: right now, just did a, if she's driving, she did
• 10:57
  Speaker 2: a U-turn.
• 10:59
  Speaker 6: September 15th.
• 11:00
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 11:01
  Speaker 2: Coliseum Convention Center.
• 11:02
  Speaker 1: That's right.
• 11:02
Speaker 2: Chef Chase Collier is going to do Appalachia stuff with
• 11:06
Speaker 2: trout cake. With green tomato and bacon jam, ramp aioli,
• 11:11
Speaker 2: and buttermilk foam. Chef Dennis, help me with this. What
• 11:13
  Speaker 2: is trout cake?
• 11:15
Speaker 5: Basically, it's almost like a salmon cake, except they make
• 11:18
Speaker 5: it with trout. Okay.
• 11:19
  Speaker 10: All right.
• 11:20
Speaker 8: I'm in on that.
• 11:21
Speaker 2: Chef Betty Reed, help me out here. Mombata? Batata?
• 11:26
  Speaker 9: Yes.
• 11:26
  Speaker 5: Okay.
• 11:26
  Speaker 6: It's a lamb dish.
• 11:27
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 11:28
Speaker 6: I'm looking forward to it.
• 11:29
Speaker 2: It's a potato dish with steamed red potatoes and lamb stuffing.
• 11:33
Speaker 2: I'm in on that. Chef John Macklin doing the Jamaican thing.
• 11:36
Speaker 2: Crispy jerk marinated pork belly with smooth grilled plantain puree,
• 11:41
Speaker 2: smoked pineapple salsa, and an Appleton rum reduction.
• 11:45
  Speaker 5: Chef Dennis. Exciting.
• 11:47
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 11:49
Speaker 2: Chef Evan Wilson doing some more Italian stuff. Wild mushroom arancini?
• 11:54
  Speaker 5: Yep, arancini.
• 11:55
Speaker 2: Arancini, okay. I need my man Tony the tailor to
• 11:58
Speaker 2: help me. Perenzino, where are you? And he's got some
• 12:02
Speaker 2: other great things going on there. And Chef Morgan, as
• 12:04
Speaker 2: you said, is going to be doing a couple different desserts,
• 12:08
Speaker 2: one from Mexico, one from Brazil, and one from Sweden.
• 12:10
Speaker 2: Chef Paul is going to be helping you out as well.
• 12:13
Speaker 2: And the thing I like about it, and all this
• 12:15
Speaker 2: information is available on your website. We'll get that a
• 12:17
Speaker 2: little bit later on. But I do want to remind
• 12:19
Speaker 2: people that these are primarily– you're making these things– with
• 12:23
Speaker 2: things that you normally find that are easily available. Talk
• 12:26
  Speaker 2: about that, Brianna.
• 12:27
Speaker 6: So that's the challenge. While we bring together the local
• 12:31
Speaker 6: celebrity chefs that often don't have time to come together
• 12:34
Speaker 6: until an event such as this happens, that challenge is
• 12:37
Speaker 6: not amongst the chefs, but the challenge is with the food.
• 12:40
Speaker 6: And we host a food pantry at Covenant House. And
• 12:44
Speaker 6: so that challenge is preparing or coming up with a
• 12:47
Speaker 6: menu item that would have some type of an ingredient
• 12:50
Speaker 6: included that could be found on the shelves of our pantry,
• 12:54
Speaker 6: showcasing that gourmet food can still be made from food
• 12:57
Speaker 6: that can be found in your local food pantry. Roughly,
• 13:01
Speaker 6: we have about 14% of our area here that is
• 13:08
Speaker 6: food insecure. And so it, again, comes back. All the
• 13:13
Speaker 6: funds that are generated from this event come back to
• 13:16
Speaker 6: benefit all the programs and services that we operate there
• 13:18
Speaker 6: at Covenant House. And of course, and that is the
• 13:22
Speaker 6: food pantry. So it does benefit from this. And so
• 13:24
Speaker 6: we like to showcase it and highlight it. And this year,
• 13:26
Speaker 6: we'll be honoring the Reverend Jim Lewis, whom we just
• 13:30
Speaker 6: lost just a few months back. And he was a
• 13:32
Speaker 6: founding father of Covenant House. And so what better way
• 13:36
Speaker 6: to celebrate but by food and bringing people together?
• 13:41
  Speaker 3: Absolutely.
• 13:42
Speaker 2: Absolutely. And when you use the term food insecure, that's
• 13:47
Speaker 2: got a lot of different connotations. It doesn't necessarily, and
• 13:51
Speaker 2: here's my definition, you can correct me if I'm wrong,
• 13:53
Speaker 2: it doesn't necessarily mean I have no food all the time.
• 13:56
Speaker 2: It can mean I don't know where, I know where
• 13:59
Speaker 2: my meals today are taking care of, that are where
• 14:01
Speaker 2: I'm going to eat today, but I don't know where
• 14:03
Speaker 2: I'm going to eat tomorrow. That's the definition of food insecurity.
• 14:06
  Speaker 2: It's not necessarily I don't have any food. It's just
• 14:09
Speaker 2: I don't always know where my next meal is coming from.
• 14:11
Speaker 6: That is correct. That is very correct. So a lot
• 14:15
Speaker 6: of the population that we serve at Covenant House, they're working.
• 14:18
Speaker 2: Yes. Here's what gets lost in a lot of this stuff.
• 14:22
Speaker 2: I'm going to be honest with you. And it doesn't
• 14:23
Speaker 2: matter whether it's you guys. I talked to my friends
• 14:26
Speaker 2: at Union Mission and Mountain Mission. A great number of
• 14:30
Speaker 2: people that utilize these resources. As a matter of fact,
• 14:32
Speaker 2: I can tell you with one of those, the majority
• 14:34
Speaker 2: of people are working people. Talk about that.
• 14:37
Speaker 6: You are correct. Majority are working. The other portion... are
• 14:41
Speaker 6: living on a fixed income. And so when it comes
• 14:44
Speaker 6: down to trying to meet rent and utilities and keep
• 14:48
Speaker 6: your family fed, then they don't always have the means
• 14:53
Speaker 6: and resources to make that stretch. So fortunately, we are
• 14:57
Speaker 6: able to offer the services of that food pantry that
• 15:00
Speaker 6: can help supplement that family's needs for that month. Many
• 15:05
Speaker 6: of the families, they also serve SNAP benefits. But when
• 15:09
Speaker 6: they begin working, those SNAP benefits, they begin to titrate down,
• 15:13
Speaker 6: and it's more difficult to make their dollar stretch. So
• 15:17
Speaker 6: we're fortunate to have our food pantry where we're able
• 15:20
Speaker 6: to get food to people's tables and do the best
• 15:24
Speaker 6: that we can with what we're given.
• 15:25
Speaker 2: This event, again, has happened at the Connoisseur Convention Center
• 15:28
Speaker 2: on September the 15th, and I think it says something
• 15:30
Speaker 2: to all these chefs that are involved, Chef Dennis, because
• 15:32
Speaker 2: as a chef, you've been a chef for a long time,
• 15:34
Speaker 2: and you know what it's like, and you know that you,
• 15:37
Speaker 2: you covet any time away. I mean, as much as
• 15:40
Speaker 2: you like cooking, you know, you like a little time
• 15:42
Speaker 2: off every now and then, but you guys are all
• 15:43
Speaker 2: giving of your time and your talents to be able
• 15:46
Speaker 2: to do this. So you obviously believe in the mission.
• 15:48
Speaker 5: Oh, 100%. Um, I've been a part of this event
• 15:50
Speaker 5: for a long time. It's very, uh, near and dear
• 15:52
Speaker 5: to my heart. So like I said, with this being
• 15:55
Speaker 5: my 10th year, being a part of it and them
• 15:57
Speaker 5: approaching me to say, Hey chef, would you reward your,
• 16:00
Speaker 5: this event by, you know, selling out or helping us
• 16:03
Speaker 5: sell out to Go get a tattoo if we sell out.
• 16:07
Speaker 5: They knew who to ask. They know it's hard for
• 16:09
Speaker 5: me to say no when it comes to supporting this awesome,
• 16:13
  Speaker 5: awesome event.
• 16:14
Speaker 2: Give us the website again, Brianna.
• 16:16
Speaker 6: West Virginia Covenant House. West Virginia Covenant House. Let me
• 16:19
Speaker 6: say that again because there are some other advertisements that occur.
• 16:24
  Speaker 3: TV.
• 16:27
Speaker 6: They don't have anything to do with West Virginia Covenant House.
• 16:29
Speaker 6: So when you see Covenant House, look for WV in
• 16:32
Speaker 6: the front of it. They're a standalone grassroots organization.
• 16:34
Speaker 2: And you can get your tickets on that website?
• 16:36
  Speaker 6: Correct.
• 16:37
Speaker 2: And get them soon because the event is September the 15th,
• 16:39
Speaker 2: and it is going to sell out, and he's going
• 16:41
Speaker 2: to get a check today. As a matter of fact,
• 16:43
Speaker 2: if you go to the website, which I did this morning,
• 16:45
Speaker 2: the actual tattoo is on the website.
• 16:47
  Speaker 1: Correct.
• 16:47
Speaker 2: So you can actually see. We had a text here
• 16:49
Speaker 2: that says, do you all ever make cookbooks of all
• 16:51
Speaker 2: the foods that were done at the event?
• 16:53
Speaker 6: That would be incredible.
• 16:54
Speaker 5: Great idea. Really, really good idea. Okay. As hard as
• 16:58
Speaker 5: it is to wrangle these chefs to get together, though,
• 17:00
Speaker 5: to actually get them to submit a recipe.
• 17:03
Speaker 2: And some of them may not want to give up
• 17:05
Speaker 2: their recipes. You know how cooks are. You know how
• 17:06
Speaker 2: chefs are sometimes. They may not want to.
• 17:09
Speaker 6: It's one of those things, you know, a little bit here,
• 17:11
Speaker 6: a little bit there.
• 17:12
  Speaker 2: And that's what I like because, like I said, I'm
• 17:15
Speaker 2: a big foodie. I watch all these cooking shows on TV,
• 17:17
Speaker 2: and they'll say, and what is that? And other things.
• 17:20
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 17:21
Speaker 5: They don't tell you all the ingredients. They just give you, like,
• 17:24
Speaker 5: an outline of the ingredients.
• 17:26
  Speaker 2: And spices.
• 17:27
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 17:28
  Speaker 2: And assorted spices.
• 17:29
  Speaker 3: All right, guys.
• 17:30

• 20:52
Speaker 2: Good morning, sir. Welcome to the show.
• 20:54
Speaker 5: Good morning. Thank you.
• 20:55
Speaker 2: You know, I'm still hung up on this Chef's Challenge thing, man.
• 20:58
Speaker 2: Hit me. I mean, the crispy jerk marinated pork belly
• 21:04
  Speaker 2: is awesome.
• 21:08
Speaker 3: What was the other one?
• 21:09
Speaker 2: This watermelon gazpacho. It's a soup, and it's a cold soup.
• 21:14
Speaker 2: But I would try it. I'd try any of these things.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: I'm intrigued. You have my attention.
• 21:19
Speaker 2: And then you got people like Chef Paul involved.
• 21:20
  Speaker 10: Right.
• 21:21
Speaker 2: You got people like Chef Morgan Morrison involved.
• 21:23
  Speaker 10: Yeah.
• 21:23
Speaker 2: Chase Collier from Ristorante Abruzzi with that trout cake with
• 21:27
Speaker 2: green tomato and bacon jam, ramp aioli, and buttermilk foam.
• 21:33
  Speaker 3: I'm frankly speechless.
• 21:35
Speaker 2: Well, you won't be. You can go check it out
• 21:38
Speaker 2: for yourself on the 15th of September at the Coliseum
• 21:42
Speaker 2: Convention Center. It's a fundraiser. Covenant House. Just go to
• 21:44
Speaker 2: their website for more information. Second year, Daniel, that we're
• 21:47
Speaker 2: going to be covering state football. Talk about the season.
• 21:51
Speaker 2: Exciting stuff going on.
• 21:53
Speaker 3: This West Virginia State team's picked fourth in the Mountain
• 21:55
Speaker 3: East Conference this year. All of the media day kind
• 21:59
Speaker 3: of things have been coming out recently over the last
• 22:01
Speaker 3: couple of weeks. The league has each day been releasing
• 22:07
Speaker 3: an interview with each of the coaches in the conference
• 22:10
Speaker 3: and John Pennington, the head coach at West Virginia State,
• 22:12
Speaker 3: his came out on Friday, and he said he thinks
• 22:17
Speaker 3: this is the most talented team he's had at West
• 22:18
Speaker 3: Virginia State. He's been there for 10 years, so that's
• 22:21
Speaker 3: 10 teams you're talking about, and he says this is
• 22:23
Speaker 3: the most talented group that they've had. I'm very excited.
• 22:26
Speaker 3: I know the folks in Institute are very excited, and
• 22:28
Speaker 3: we're ready to get things started.
• 22:30
Speaker 2: And you have a new color commentator for our coverage
• 22:32
  Speaker 2: this year, right?
• 22:32
Speaker 3: That is right. Hollis Lewis, not just a member of
• 22:35
Speaker 3: the House of Delegates, but also a former West Virginia
• 22:37
Speaker 3: State football player, a local standout at George Washington High School.
• 22:42
Speaker 3: where he was a teammate of West Virginia State's John Pennington.
• 22:45
Speaker 3: So a really exciting addition to our team and our
• 22:48
Speaker 3: family this year. Somebody that I think is going to
• 22:51
Speaker 3: bring a lot of perspective as to what goes on
• 22:53
Speaker 3: on the field, but also the West Virginia State community
• 22:56
  Speaker 3: as well.
• 22:57
Speaker 2: And, of course, as you said, he was a standout
• 22:59
Speaker 2: football player, House of Delegates member, podcast co-host along with
• 23:03
Speaker 2: Carl Lee and Lisa Odey. uh, on let's talk. So, uh,
• 23:07
  Speaker 2: he's a true Renaissance man does a little bit. I
• 23:09
Speaker 2: think he's going to add a lot to the broadcast.
• 23:11
Speaker 2: I think he was broadcasts were already great, but I
• 23:12
Speaker 2: think he's going to add a, add a lot more
• 23:14
Speaker 2: to it. It's always good to have. And I know
• 23:16
Speaker 2: you played, but I mean, it's also good to have a, uh, uh,
• 23:19
Speaker 2: somebody that's actually played even at that particular institution that
• 23:23
  Speaker 2: can talk about.
• 23:24
Speaker 3: Absolutely. It's, it's somebody that knows the ins and outs
• 23:26
Speaker 3: of the program. He goes and talks to the team
• 23:30
Speaker 3: all the time in his capacity as someone who's a
• 23:32
Speaker 3: leader in the community and an alumnus and somebody that
• 23:36
Speaker 3: understands what it means to be a West Virginia State
• 23:38
Speaker 3: student athlete. So it's just a really strong addition to
• 23:43
Speaker 3: what I think. We already have a tremendous product with
• 23:47
Speaker 3: West Virginia State and our relationship with the university and
• 23:49
Speaker 3: the athletic department. But Hollis being part of the team
• 23:52
Speaker 3: is only going to make that even better. Talk about
• 23:54
Speaker 3: the first game. We got Shawan on Saturday. Non-conference game.
• 23:58
Speaker 3: Opponent from Conference Carolinas from Murfreesboro, North Carolina. And a
• 24:05
Speaker 3: team that has a lot of new faces on the roster.
• 24:08
Speaker 3: It's a noon kickoff on Saturday. Very excited. It's always...
• 24:13
Speaker 3: a fun atmosphere at Lake and Rayfield at Dickerson Stadium.
• 24:17
Speaker 3: We'll have coverage on the air with pregame at 1130
• 24:20
Speaker 3: on 107.3 The Beat. Here locally, 107.3 The Beat, wv.com
• 24:26
Speaker 3: is where you can find us streaming online. And we
• 24:29
Speaker 3: will have the start of the season noon on Saturday,
• 24:31
Speaker 3: toe meets leather, West Virginia State and Shawan. And the
• 24:34
Speaker 3: majority of the games are on Saturday afternoons, right? I
• 24:37
Speaker 3: believe every game is on a Saturday.
• 24:40
  Speaker 2: And most....
• 24:42
Speaker 3: Games in the Mountaineers Conference will be either noon or
• 24:44
Speaker 3: one o'clock kickoffs. Next week's going to be a lot
• 24:47
Speaker 3: of fun because we are going up to Robert Morris
• 24:50
Speaker 3: to play a Division I FCS opponent at Robert Morris
• 24:54
Speaker 3: in Pittsburgh. That's going to be a six o'clock kickoff
• 24:56
Speaker 3: next Saturday, but just about every game is either noon
• 24:59
Speaker 3: or one o'clock this year.
• 25:00
Speaker 2: And they're on 107.3 The Beat.
• 25:01
  Speaker 1: Yes.
• 25:02
Speaker 2: What is it that you enjoy about getting, because this
• 25:04
Speaker 2: was a new venture that we got into last year,
• 25:07
Speaker 2: and you're the play-by-play guy. What is it that you
• 25:10
Speaker 2: get out of these games? What do you enjoy about it?
• 25:11
Speaker 3: Division II athletics in particular is a community. College athletics
• 25:15
Speaker 3: in general is, and that's what I've always loved about
• 25:18
Speaker 3: college athletics. But Division II, it's one of, to me,
• 25:23
Speaker 3: the purest forms of competition because these are guys that
• 25:28
  Speaker 3: 99 out of 100, it's not even 9 out of 10,
• 25:31
Speaker 3: 99 out of 100 are never going to make a
• 25:33
Speaker 3: dollar playing football. They're going out there because it's helping
• 25:36
Speaker 3: them get an education. They want to keep playing the game.
• 25:39
Speaker 3: They love the game, and they want to keep doing it.
• 25:41
Speaker 3: And the community rallies around that. I've said for a
• 25:44
Speaker 3: couple of years now with the NIL and the revenue
• 25:46
Speaker 3: sharing and the transfer portal and everything going on in
• 25:49
Speaker 3: Division I college athletics, if you're kind of fed up
• 25:52
Speaker 3: with what that has become, go support your local Division
• 25:55
Speaker 3: II program. And I'll say that to anybody around the
• 25:59
Speaker 3: state of West Virginia because the Mountain East Conference is
• 26:01
Speaker 3: a lot of fun and a really competitive place to be.
• 26:03
Speaker 2: And it's one of those reasons why, you know, minor
• 26:06
Speaker 2: league baseball is so popular too, is because years and
• 26:09
Speaker 2: years ago, not recently, but years ago, people kind of
• 26:11
Speaker 2: got fed up with the high salaries and so on
• 26:13
Speaker 2: and so forth. And they said, look, if I want
• 26:15
Speaker 2: to go out and I want to take in a
• 26:16
Speaker 2: game that's purely for the enjoyment and these guys are
• 26:19
Speaker 2: out there and the, and of course the bands and
• 26:21
Speaker 2: cheerleaders and everybody out there just doing it for the
• 26:24
Speaker 2: love of this. They're not looking for their next step
• 26:26
  Speaker 2: up necessarily.
• 26:27
  Speaker 9: Right.
• 26:28
Speaker 2: That's why minor league baseball really exploded like it did,
• 26:30
Speaker 2: and that's why some of the best football, I think,
• 26:32
Speaker 2: around is found on that level.
• 26:34
Speaker 3: It's a lot of fun. It's exciting games. The Mountain
• 26:37
Speaker 3: East in particular is a really level playing field. I mean,
• 26:41
Speaker 3: almost every game you get week in and week out
• 26:44
Speaker 3: is competitive. The top end of the league is really good.
• 26:48
Speaker 3: Frostburg State was picked to win the conference this year
• 26:51
Speaker 3: after going to the Division II quarterfinals in the NCAA tournament.
• 26:54
Speaker 3: They're No. 17 in the country to start the year.
• 26:57
Speaker 3: University of Charleston has hosted NCAA playoff games the last
• 27:01
Speaker 3: couple of years. It's a really good league with really
• 27:04
Speaker 3: good games and really good players, frankly. And if you
• 27:08
Speaker 3: follow West Virginia high school football, you're going to see
• 27:09
Speaker 3: a lot of the names that you've heard on Friday
• 27:11
Speaker 3: nights the last couple of years out there on the field.
• 27:13
Speaker 2: Talking to Daniel Woods, 25, away from Tampa, Dave Allen
• 27:16
Speaker 2: Show on 580 Live, brought to you in part by
• 27:17
Speaker 2: Pinnacle Consultants, helping to identify environmental concerns, asbestos, lead, mold,
• 27:22
Speaker 2: and indoor quality issues in buildings all across the state.
• 27:24
Speaker 2: Providing inspections, testing, and accredited lab services you can trust.
• 27:27
Speaker 2: Check out PinnacleCorp.net. Helping you understand your environment because what
• 27:31
Speaker 2: you don't know can hurt you. And we are adding
• 27:34
  Speaker 2: a coaches show. That's right.
• 27:36
Speaker 3: Second season for West Virginia State football. And it's going
• 27:39
Speaker 3: to be the first season that we have the John
• 27:41
Speaker 3: Pennington show live on location. We did a little bit
• 27:44
Speaker 3: of a studio show last year on the beat just
• 27:47
Speaker 3: to kind of get our feet underneath us. Uh, but
• 27:50
Speaker 3: this is the John Pennington show live on location every
• 27:53
Speaker 3: Wednesday night during the season, uh, at the pitch at Shawnee. Uh,
• 27:57
Speaker 3: so right by campus, uh, at West Virginia state. And
• 28:01
Speaker 3: it's an hour seven to eight every Wednesday night on
• 28:03
Speaker 3: the beat. I'm going to sit down with, with the
• 28:05
Speaker 3: head coach of the yellow jackets, John Pennington. And we're
• 28:07
Speaker 3: going to talk about the team, talk about the game
• 28:09
Speaker 3: coming up. We'll have special guests throughout the season. You'll
• 28:12
Speaker 3: get to know the players. You'll get to know the
• 28:13
Speaker 3: other coaches. Uh, and we're just going to talk some
• 28:15
Speaker 3: football every Wednesday night on the beat. And if the
• 28:18
Speaker 3: football's not enough to get you to come see us
• 28:20
Speaker 3: out at the pitch, it's also Wing Wednesdays at the
• 28:24
Speaker 3: pitch during the show. So that's Dollar Wings and Dollar
• 28:27
Speaker 3: Off Draft Beer every Wednesday night that we'll be out
• 28:30
Speaker 3: there during the season. So really excited to get that
• 28:32
Speaker 3: started tonight, 7 o'clock. At the pitch or tune in
• 28:36
Speaker 3: on 107.3 The Beat.
• 28:37
Speaker 2: And they have got some fantastic wings.
• 28:39
  Speaker 3: That they do.
• 28:40
Speaker 2: Their food's excellent at the pitch. I've eaten there. As
• 28:42
Speaker 2: a matter of fact, we were at a gathering there
• 28:44
Speaker 2: just a couple of weeks ago.
• 28:45
  Speaker 3: That is correct.
• 28:45
Speaker 2: Breaking bread or maybe breaking chicken bones, as we should say,
• 28:48
Speaker 2: just a couple of weeks ago out at the pitch.
• 28:50
Speaker 2: But I think it's cool. I mean, as you said,
• 28:51
Speaker 2: you've done the show in the past, but there's nothing like,
• 28:53
Speaker 2: and I've done similar things on other stations. There's nothing
• 28:55
Speaker 2: like actually taking it out. to the public. And plus it,
• 28:58
Speaker 2: it works out because there may be people in there
• 29:00
Speaker 2: that are just dining or just taking in.
• 29:02
  Speaker 3: The great food.
• 29:03
Speaker 2: They think, well, I'm going to go check out a
• 29:04
Speaker 2: Western USA game. You know, I'm all, I'm all bought
• 29:06
  Speaker 2: in on this.
• 29:07
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 29:07
  Speaker 3: It's, it's exciting stuff. And whether you're a football novice,
• 29:13
Speaker 3: who's just there to support the university, or like you said,
• 29:15
Speaker 3: you're just sitting in the restaurant on wing night and
• 29:18
Speaker 3: happen to happen to see what's going on or, or,
• 29:21
Speaker 3: You're a diehard West Virginia State fan that's at every
• 29:24
Speaker 3: game and lives and dies with the X's and O's.
• 29:26
Speaker 3: I mean, this show, it appeals to everybody, and we're
• 29:30
  Speaker 3: really excited to.
• 29:30
  Speaker 5: Make it happen.
• 29:31
Speaker 2: And again, all the games can be heard at 107.3
• 29:34
Speaker 2: The Beat, and Coach's show will be every Wednesday night
• 29:38
Speaker 2: during the season there at the pitch. and you start
• 29:39
  Speaker 2: at 7 o'clock, right?
• 29:40
  Speaker 3: 7 o'clock.
• 29:41
Speaker 2: So come on out, enjoy some wings, enjoy some drinks,
• 29:43
Speaker 2: or just hang out and talk a little bit of
• 29:45
Speaker 2: West Virginia State football. Man, is this not the most
• 29:47
Speaker 2: exciting time of the year?
• 29:48
  Speaker 5: It's the best.
• 29:48
Speaker 2: I mean, this week or so leading up to football,
• 29:52
  Speaker 2: because I have been, I mean, I'm a football fanatic,
• 29:55
Speaker 2: and I have been All dialed in on NFL preseason
• 29:58
Speaker 2: games that I really couldn't. Cowboys are 2-0 in preseason,
• 30:01
Speaker 2: by the way. There you go.
• 30:03
  Speaker 5: It's preseason.
• 30:04
Speaker 2: Uh, but, uh, but I mean, and that, and we
• 30:06
Speaker 2: were in, of course, state starts this week. We're already
• 30:08
Speaker 2: getting pumped up about, about Marshall and WVU and whatever
• 30:12
Speaker 2: your favorite college team happens to be.
• 30:14
Speaker 3: There's a high school football game on this very station
• 30:17
  Speaker 3: tomorrow night.
• 30:18
  Speaker 2: I got it.
• 30:18
  Speaker 3: Tomorrow night.
• 30:20
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 30:20
Speaker 2: A lot of the schools are waiting or not waiting.
• 30:22
Speaker 2: They're Gavin, my alma mater, but Logan Wildcats are playing
• 30:24
Speaker 2: the annual battle of Logan County, the lion's club bowl
• 30:27
Speaker 2: against the man. He'll be tomorrow night at, uh, at
• 30:31
Speaker 2: Nesbitt Queen Stadium, which is, of course, located in Logan.
• 30:34
Speaker 2: I've got the schedule. I'll get to that after the
• 30:36
Speaker 2: break about the games we are going to be covering. Now,
• 30:39
Speaker 2: are you going to be doing high school games as well?
• 30:42
Speaker 3: I will be around our high school coverage. I will
• 30:46
Speaker 3: not be broadcasting games on the air, but I will
• 30:48
Speaker 3: be around the Metro News high school football coverage this fall.
• 30:51
Speaker 3: is what i can say at this time it's not
• 30:53
Speaker 3: like it's not like there's some kind of secret plan
• 30:55
Speaker 3: uh but we're working out some of the details i
• 30:58
Speaker 3: will be i will be in and around the metro
• 31:00
  Speaker 3: news high.
• 31:00
Speaker 2: School football coverage this year but we know for a
• 31:02
Speaker 2: fact that if you want to come hang out with
• 31:03
Speaker 2: daniel woods the place to do it is the pitch
• 31:05
Speaker 2: at seven o'clock tonight which is just right down right
• 31:07
Speaker 2: down the road you know from that's right right practically
• 31:10
Speaker 2: next to campus yeah west virginia state university so i'm
• 31:12
Speaker 2: sure there'll be some students over there too it's great
• 31:14
Speaker 2: it's a great place to have it i mean it
• 31:16
Speaker 2: really really is because it's in walking distance of the
• 31:18
Speaker 2: campus there'll be a lot of the Students that will
• 31:20
Speaker 2: come over after class and whatever and enjoy some wings.
• 31:22
  Speaker 3: And if you're a student, a faculty member, a staff
• 31:25
Speaker 3: member at West Virginia State, there is a West Virginia
• 31:28
Speaker 3: State discount at the pitch all the time. But of course,
• 31:31
Speaker 3: it applies while we're there as well. So come down,
• 31:34
Speaker 3: bring your university ID with you and get a little
• 31:37
Speaker 3: bit of help on the bill, too.
• 31:38
Speaker 2: All right. Daniel Woods, Metro News and Sports. Appreciate you
• 31:42
Speaker 2: being here. We'll talk to you Friday on the Sports Blitz.
• 31:43
Speaker 5: Talk to you Friday.
• 31:44
Speaker 2: Thanks a lot. Coach's show tonight at the pitch. Again,
• 31:46
Speaker 2: it starts at 7 o'clock. 9.39, speaking of sports, the
• 31:49
Speaker 2: Dave Allen Show on 580 Live is brought to you
• 31:51
Speaker 2: in part by the Charleston Dirty Birds. Check this out, Daniel.
• 31:54
Speaker 2: You may or may not know this. Tonight is Toilet
• 31:56
Speaker 2: Paper Night at GoMart Ballpark. They're teaming up with the
• 31:59
Speaker 2: United Way of Central West Virginia, and this is their words.
• 32:02
Speaker 2: Bring a roll of toilet paper. A new roll of
• 32:05
Speaker 2: toilet paper. And I don't really think they needed to
• 32:08
Speaker 2: put new in there, but okay, okay.
• 32:11
  Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good point.
• 32:13
Speaker 2: And when you do that, it's going to go to
• 32:14
Speaker 2: the United Way, and you're going to get free admission
• 32:16
Speaker 2: to the game tonight against the Lancaster Stormers. So, again,
• 32:19
Speaker 2: you show up with your roll of toilet paper, new,
• 32:22
Speaker 2: fresh toilet paper, not used. Bring it in, and you
• 32:26
Speaker 2: get into the game for free tonight over at Gilmore Ballpark.
• 32:28
  Speaker 3: If I bring, like, a Sam's Club 50-pack, do I
• 32:31
  Speaker 3: get season tickets?
• 32:33
Speaker 2: Andy Shea will be on the show tomorrow. So you
• 32:35
Speaker 2: can ask Andy Shea on the show tomorrow. All right. Daniel,
• 32:38
Speaker 2: appreciate you being here, man. Thanks a lot. 20 minutes
• 32:40
Speaker 2: away from 10. We'll take a break. Come back after
• 32:42
Speaker 2: this on The Voice of Charleston WCHS.

• 33:04
Speaker 12: a crack in the heat exchanger that was slowly leaking
• 33:06
Speaker 12: carbon monoxide into our home. From that moment on, we

• 35:31
Speaker 2: Our actual game coverage comes up tomorrow night here on WCHS,
• 35:35
Speaker 2: as we will have Nitro against South Charleston. Friday night
• 35:39
Speaker 2: here on WCHS, we have George Washington traveling to Spring
• 35:43
Speaker 2: Valley to take on the Timberwolves. And also Friday night,
• 35:45
Speaker 2: opening night for Herbert Hoover against Fairmont Senior. And we
• 35:49
Speaker 2: will have that game and all the Hoover games over
• 35:51
Speaker 2: on one of our other sister stations, Superstar Country 96.1 KWS.
• 35:54
Speaker 2: So I can tell you, if you like football, this
• 35:57
Speaker 2: is the place to be because we're going to start
• 35:59
Speaker 2: it tonight with the coaches' show for Western Union State 107.3,
• 36:03
Speaker 2: the beat with Daniel Woods out at the pitch in Dunbar.
• 36:07
Speaker 2: And then, of course, tomorrow night we have– well, actually tonight,
• 36:11
Speaker 2: I should say, here on CHS we have high school
• 36:13
Speaker 2: sports line. And then we've got two games on our
• 36:15
Speaker 2: schedule over the next couple days, actually more than that.
• 36:18
Speaker 2: So just go out and enjoy some high school football,
• 36:21
Speaker 2: college football, and all the football stuff. 9.44, coming up. Oh,
• 36:25
Speaker 2: I did want to, speaking of football, want to throw
• 36:27
Speaker 2: this out here. You know, tomorrow night is the annual
• 36:29
Speaker 2: Paint the Capital City Green event up at the Bill
• 36:31
Speaker 2: Noh Flight School for Marshall University benefiting the Big Green.
• 36:36
Speaker 2: Happy to announce that it has completely sold out. It
• 36:43
Speaker 2: always does. We told you to get your tickets early,
• 36:46
Speaker 2: but if you didn't get your tickets, then shame on
• 36:47
Speaker 2: you because the event is completely sold out. And I'll
• 36:51
Speaker 2: just tell you what you're going to be missing tomorrow night.
• 36:53
Speaker 2: It's a night of Marshall University, Thundering Heard, everything. Head
• 36:56
Speaker 2: football coach, Tony Gibson. Head basketball coach, Corny Jackson. Women's
• 37:00
Speaker 2: basketball coach, Julie Falk. Other coaches there, the AD, Gerald
• 37:03
Speaker 2: Harrison is going to be there. Voice of the Thundering Heard,
• 37:06
Speaker 2: Steve Cotton will be there. There's live auctions. There's just
• 37:10
Speaker 2: all kinds of great things. Hope you got your tickets
• 37:13
Speaker 2: because it is completely sold out. Now, there is one
• 37:15
Speaker 2: little bit of bad news I need to throw in there.
• 37:17
Speaker 2: The scheduled emcees for the event, myself along with Steve
• 37:21
Speaker 2: Hannibal from 98.7 The Mouth and Wild and Wonderful Classic Rock,
• 37:24
Speaker 2: If you've listened to Steve on the air here recently
• 37:26
Speaker 2: or if you've encountered him anywhere, Steve is in quite
• 37:29
Speaker 2: a bit of pain right now. He's got a major
• 37:32
Speaker 2: dental issue going on to the point that his jaw
• 37:35
Speaker 2: is all swollen up. And, you know, I just figured
• 37:37
Speaker 2: that Jody beat him up again. But no, he he
• 37:40
Speaker 2: got some major news. So he's going to bow out
• 37:42
Speaker 2: tomorrow night. So I'm going to be flying that ship solo.
• 37:45
Speaker 2: But with a little bit of help from Metro News
• 37:47
Speaker 2: meteorologist Brian Hughes, Brian and I are going to handle
• 37:50
Speaker 2: the auction. there tomorrow night. So we're looking forward to
• 37:52
Speaker 2: seeing you there. Hope you got your tickets because the
• 37:54
Speaker 2: event has sold out. And it's a benefit for the
• 37:58
Speaker 2: Big Green tomorrow up at the Belno Flight School, just
• 38:01
Speaker 2: before you get to West Virginia International Yeager Airport. Painting
• 38:04
Speaker 2: the capital city green tomorrow. It is a sold out event.
• 38:07
Speaker 2: Coming up later today, Metro News Midday, powered by Selangor Law.
• 38:11
Speaker 2: It's Wednesday, meaning we introduce you to another wonderful West Virginian.
• 38:14
Speaker 2: Andrew Donaldson is going to join me, political commentator extraordinaire. Now,
• 38:17
Speaker 2: we had him scheduled on the show yesterday to talk
• 38:20
Speaker 2: politics and other things in the news, but, uh, we
• 38:23
Speaker 2: had him at 206 and just prior to, I mean,
• 38:27
Speaker 2: Amanda had just, uh, closed out the hour when we
• 38:31
Speaker 2: learned that Dolly Parton passed. So we kind of transitioned
• 38:33
Speaker 2: after the news, Andrew, ever the professional that he is.
• 38:38
Speaker 2: And I ended up talking about Dolly Parton, uh, during
• 38:41
Speaker 2: that time. And then we brought in, uh, Tim Morris from, uh,
• 38:44
Speaker 2: Chandler Limousine here in Charleston. We had the pleasure of
• 38:46
Speaker 2: driving Dolly around Charleston. So that's what we did yesterday.
• 38:49
Speaker 2: So I asked Andrew because he didn't get to talk
• 38:51
Speaker 2: about what he wanted to talk about. He was happy
• 38:53
Speaker 2: to talk about Dolly, of course, but we had some
• 38:54
Speaker 2: other things in the news, including the South Carolina primary
• 38:59
Speaker 2: where the sister of Lindy Graham picked up a win yesterday,
• 39:03
Speaker 2: and she'll move on from there. So he's actually covering
• 39:05
Speaker 2: that for other news sources. So we'll talk to Andrew
• 39:08
Speaker 2: about that. Back to sports in just a moment. Each Wednesday,
• 39:12
Speaker 2: During the high school football season, of course, we get
• 39:13
Speaker 2: the pleasure of having the voice of high school sports
• 39:15
Speaker 2: in West Virginia, Fred Persinger, to join us to preview
• 39:18
Speaker 2: High School Sportsline. He'll be on the show today. And
• 39:22
Speaker 2: we're going to continue talking about the passing of Dolly Parton,
• 39:25
Speaker 2: including the business of Dolly. Make no mistake about it.
• 39:30
Speaker 2: Dolly was a businesswoman, first and foremost. She did so
• 39:33
Speaker 2: many great things for charitable causes, millions and millions and
• 39:36
Speaker 2: millions of dollars. But Dolly was a pretty sharp businessperson.
• 39:42
Speaker 2: I mean, she saw that from the early days of
• 39:46
Speaker 2: her career. And I think that she saw how many
• 39:50
Speaker 2: women and minorities for that matter. And I mean, I'll
• 39:53
Speaker 2: just go and say it and talent in general, no
• 39:55
Speaker 2: matter what the gender or the race or whatever, how
• 39:59
Speaker 2: many of them got taken advantage of? Okay. So she said,
• 40:04
Speaker 2: ain't happening to this girl from the Hills of Tennessee.
• 40:07
Speaker 2: So she owned her own music, her own publishing company.
• 40:09
Speaker 2: She wrote her own songs and Dolly was a business
• 40:13
Speaker 2: not to even mention the product endorsements and Dollywood and
• 40:16
Speaker 2: all the other things. Burke Allen, Allen Media Strategies is
• 40:19
Speaker 2: going to join us to talk about the business of
• 40:22
Speaker 2: Dolly Parton. Also, Open Line West Virginia, other things coming
• 40:25
Speaker 2: up as well. Metro News Midday with 13 News and
• 40:27
Speaker 2: tonight live anchorman to Baron and me, coming up at
• 40:30
Speaker 2: noon today, powered by Salango Law. Now, on this show tomorrow,
• 40:32
Speaker 2: some folks from the Dirty Birds are going to be
• 40:33
Speaker 2: stopping by, including owner Andy Shea. They had that homestand
• 40:37
Speaker 2: going on, including, as I mentioned, toilet paper night tonight,
• 40:40
Speaker 2: benefiting the United Way. out at, uh, uh, GoMart ballpark tonight. Well, Saturday,
• 40:44
Speaker 2: they're going to be celebrating the labor force in West Virginia.
• 40:47
Speaker 2: So we are going to talk about that and some
• 40:50
Speaker 2: other things coming up on tomorrow's show. On to, um,
• 40:53
Speaker 2: on to Dolly here just for a moment. I got
• 40:55
Speaker 2: several texts I want to get to. Uh, you know,
• 40:58
Speaker 2: I mentioned this on the midday show yesterday. Uh, I
• 41:01
Speaker 2: grew up in Southern West Virginia where, you know, country
• 41:03
  Speaker 2: music was a.
• 41:04
Speaker 3: Part of every, everyday life.
• 41:06
Speaker 2: And, uh, spent a lot of time with my grandparents, uh,
• 41:09
Speaker 2: especially on weekends and, uh, my, you know, we didn't
• 41:12
Speaker 2: miss he haul. I mean, that was a, that was
• 41:14
Speaker 2: a go-to every Saturday night. Dolly was on that show
• 41:17
Speaker 2: numerous times, but, um, you know, I got to see
• 41:20
Speaker 2: Dolly's career evolve because when I'm, I'm old enough to
• 41:23
Speaker 2: remember when she was with Porter Wagner and then the,
• 41:27
Speaker 2: she moved away from Porter Wagner, went out on her own.
• 41:29
Speaker 2: And I remember the early Well, she had a bunch
• 41:32
Speaker 2: of hits on her own, but I mean in the
• 41:34
Speaker 2: mid-' 70s when her career really took off, and of course
• 41:36
Speaker 2: the movies from 9 to 5 to Rhinestone, Best Little
• 41:40
Speaker 2: Whorehouse in Texas, all those. And then she just kept going.
• 41:47
Speaker 2: And as I said yesterday on Midday, you can count
• 41:49
Speaker 2: on one hand the number of artists that have been
• 41:53
Speaker 2: in the limelight without ever leaving the limelight for as
• 41:56
Speaker 2: long as she has. Actually, I don't know that there's
• 42:00
Speaker 2: been one. when you think about it, because she broke
• 42:02
Speaker 2: onto the scene in the mid to late 60s, and
• 42:04
Speaker 2: she never left the public consciousness. And Dolly hadn't had,
• 42:11
Speaker 2: you know, you think about all these hit records that
• 42:13
Speaker 2: she had. Dolly Parton hadn't had a hit record in
• 42:15
Speaker 2: 30 to 35 years or longer on the country chart. Now,
• 42:18
Speaker 2: she did some things on the gospel charts, I know. And,
• 42:21
Speaker 2: of course, you know, she did that album of rock
• 42:23
Speaker 2: anthems and duets, and she did the Thanksgiving show, the
• 42:27
Speaker 2: halftime show at Thanksgiving Game a couple of years ago.
• 42:29
Speaker 2: But she was still Dolly up until really the last
• 42:32
Speaker 2: couple of weeks. So, you know, lots of folks have
• 42:37
Speaker 2: said things about Dolly that knew her, and I never
• 42:39
Speaker 2: met her, so I'm not going to get into all that.
• 42:41
Speaker 2: I'm just going to say that she was, by all
• 42:44
Speaker 2: intents and purposes, and in talking to people that actually
• 42:47
Speaker 2: did meet her, She was a fantastic person. She will
• 42:50
Speaker 2: be missed. Texas, the pain of losing Dolly, not just
• 42:52
Speaker 2: for the entertainment industry, but for this troubled world as
• 42:55
Speaker 2: a whole, just as strong as Elvis was 49 years ago. Texas,
• 43:01
Speaker 2: search Dolly Parton on Google. Check out this result. It's
• 43:03
Speaker 2: absolutely beautiful. Yeah, I've seen several people posting that. It
• 43:06
Speaker 2: is a scene seemingly from heaven with Dolly entering. And
• 43:09
Speaker 2: there's Loretta Lynn and Charlie Pryde. Kenny Rogers, Waylon Jennings,
• 43:18
Speaker 2: Johnny Cash, Elvis, all welcoming her into heaven. It is 9.51,

Speaker 2: Hotline 304-345-5858. Tony V. Taylor, text 304-935-500. Let me knock
• 46:36
Speaker 2: out some text here. Text says, Dave, the same group
• 46:38
Speaker 2: of Republicans that criticized Dolly for supporting LGBTQ and Black
• 46:43
Speaker 2: Lives Matter are now acting like they cared. She never
• 46:46
Speaker 2: stood for anything the Republicans stood for. She was about love,
• 46:49
Speaker 2: not hate. Text says, can we get State Senator Mike
• 46:52
Speaker 2: Azinger on the air and ask him why he would
• 46:54
Speaker 2: post such a divisiveness on the day that Dolly died?
• 46:58
Speaker 2: I saw this. And it was Michael Azinger posted a
• 47:04
Speaker 2: story from NBC News with a picture of her getting vaccinated.
• 47:10
Speaker 2: And the headline, and this was from back in the day,
• 47:12
Speaker 2: you know, during COVID, was Dolly Parton urges people to
• 47:14
Speaker 2: get COVID vaccination. And she got her first one. And yeah, Mr.
• 47:19
Speaker 2: Azinger took it as an opportunity to point out that
• 47:24
Speaker 2: she was pro-LGBTQ from way back. What that had to
• 47:27
Speaker 2: do with the life and legacy of Dolly Parton, I
• 47:28
Speaker 2: don't know. But you know what? Idiot's going to idiot.
• 47:31
Speaker 2: So there you go. Text, Putnam County residents still upset
• 47:38
Speaker 2: about the data centers coming in and they can't do
• 47:40
Speaker 2: anything about it. I'm laughing at them. Perhaps they shouldn't
• 47:43
Speaker 2: have supported and voted for the Republican agenda to strip
• 47:45
Speaker 2: local control. Oh, and the voter suppression scheme that's leaving
• 47:50
Speaker 2: a Republican spot in Fayette County open for the next election.
• 47:53
Speaker 2: LMAO at their agenda backfiring. Text, so Lake Ontario might
• 48:00
Speaker 2: get renamed Lake America. Sounds like Donald Trump is back
• 48:03
Speaker 2: to rage baiting and agitation propaganda. I'm waiting for the
• 48:06
Speaker 2: day Canada says enough and levies heavy tariffs on potash
• 48:10
Speaker 2: to the U.S. The U.S. economy is very dependent on
• 48:14
Speaker 2: global trading and very unaware of its dependence. Text, I'll
• 48:19
Speaker 2: be attending the vigil for Dolly at the South Charleston
• 48:21
Speaker 2: Community Center. I see what you did there. Text her,
• 48:24
Speaker 2: I see what you did there. Text, one of the
• 48:29
Speaker 2: smartest and most famous business moves Dolly ever made was
• 48:32
Speaker 2: telling Colonel Tom Parker no on allowing Elvis to record
• 48:36
Speaker 2: I Will Always Love You due to Parker's little-known demand
• 48:39
Speaker 2: that Elvis receives half of every song's publishing rights. He
• 48:45
Speaker 2: records she and Elvis remain friends even after that disagreement.
• 48:48
Speaker 2: If you studied enough of the relationship between Tom Parker
• 48:51
Speaker 2: and Elvis, perhaps Elvis didn't even know anything about it.
• 48:55
Speaker 2: And I don't mean that as disrespect toward the king of.
• 48:57
  Speaker 3: Rock and roll.
• 48:58
Speaker 2: I just mean that he was left in the dark
• 48:59
Speaker 2: about a lot of the negotiations. Tech says, too bad
• 49:02
Speaker 2: that Marshall plays Penn State next Saturday because it would
• 49:04
Speaker 2: be fitting for Tony Gibson to attend the Pat White
• 49:06
Speaker 2: jersey retirement ceremony, considering he was there and a special
• 49:10
Speaker 2: group of men were coming up. Yeah, he's Tony's going
• 49:14
Speaker 2: to be Coach Gibby is going to be a little
• 49:15
Speaker 2: bit busy on that Saturday as the Thundering Herd will
• 49:18
Speaker 2: be traveling to Penn State. Now, remember, Dave Wilson on
• 49:23
Speaker 2: TalkLine said it. He called a Marshall victory in Happy Valley.
• 49:27
Speaker 2: He's the one that said it. I'm Marshall to the core.
• 49:30
Speaker 2: He called a victory. Stranger things have happened. I invite
• 49:33
Speaker 2: you to join me every Friday morning, 9-0-6, for the
• 49:35
Speaker 2: Adopt Me, Please Spend of the Week from the Kanawha-Charleston

• 49:47
Speaker 2: Homes to hospitals, classrooms to commercial spaces, they do it all,
• 49:51
Speaker 2: located at 516 D Street in South Charleston. Story posted
• 49:55
Speaker 2: this morning, WCHSnetwork.com. Some discussion last night about the proposed
• 49:59
Speaker 2: data center for the community of Buffalo in Putnam County. Now,
• 50:02
Speaker 2: this group called Putnam United created a resolution and presented
• 50:06
Speaker 2: it to the county commission there last night, asking for
• 50:09
Speaker 2: data centers to be evaluated on more than, their words,
• 50:14
Speaker 2: more than the financial impacts. The meeting last night, I
• 50:17
Speaker 2: understand I was not in attendance, went something like three
• 50:20
Speaker 2: hours or so. It seemed very orderly, and even County
• 50:25
Speaker 2: Commission President Andy Skidmore praised the citizens for the way
• 50:29
Speaker 2: that they are approaching this whole thing. President Skidmore did
• 50:33
Speaker 2: say the County Commission had little evidence say so over
• 50:39
Speaker 2: what happens there. They're talking about HB 2014. He said,
• 50:42
Speaker 2: we have very little to do with that, and told
• 50:44
Speaker 2: them to go talk to their legislature. T.J. Meadows will,
• 50:48
Speaker 2: of course, come up with talk line at 1006 on
• 50:51
Speaker 2: this very Metro news station. I don't know if you
• 50:53
Speaker 2: were there last night, but I know you saw the
• 50:56
Speaker 2: coverage and read our story, wchsnetwork.com.
• 50:59
Speaker 8: Look, I appreciate folks showing up, petitioning their government, making
• 51:03
  Speaker 8: their stance known.
• 51:04
  Speaker 2: And being respectful.
• 51:05
  Speaker 3: And being respectful.
• 51:05
Speaker 2: I want to understand.
• 51:06
Speaker 3: And this group did a very good job of that. Absolutely.
• 51:08
  Speaker 2: Absolutely.
• 51:09
Speaker 8: That's the way the process should work. With that said,
• 51:12
Speaker 8: the data is just not there. The impacts. We are
• 51:14
Speaker 8: being driven on data centers by myths.
• 51:18
  Speaker 2: Myths.
• 51:19
Speaker 8: Your power bill is going to go up. There's no
• 51:21
Speaker 8: evidence whatsoever to suggest that power bills went up in
• 51:24
Speaker 8: Loudoun County, Virginia exclusively because of data centers. There's a
• 51:27
Speaker 8: lot of other reasons. This water thing. They use too
• 51:29
Speaker 8: much water. What will happen with the water?
• 51:31
  Speaker 3: A myth.
• 51:32
  Speaker 5: Myth.
• 51:33
  Speaker 3: Disproven.
• 51:33
Speaker 2: Many of these use closed-loop systems now. You're a golfer,
• 51:36
Speaker 2: isn't it true that golf courses use a lot of water?
• 51:38
  Speaker 2: I've heard that. I don't know if it's true or
• 51:40
Speaker 2: not that a golf course uses more.
• 51:42
Speaker 8: But I think we're being guided largely by myths instead
• 51:45
Speaker 8: of facts in this entire debate.
• 51:46
Speaker 3: I'm not accusing this group of that. Right, yeah. But overall,
• 51:49
  Speaker 3: that's what's happening.
• 51:50
Speaker 2: Meadows and Wilson coming up on TalkLine at 10.06. I'll
• 51:52
Speaker 2: be back later today with Metro News Midday with 13
• 51:55
Speaker 2: News and Tonight Live anchor Amanda Barron. We'll start that
• 51:57
Speaker 2: at noon today, powered by Selangor Law. Coming up on
• 51:59
Speaker 2: the show tomorrow, we'll talk Dirty Birds baseball and opening
• 52:01
Speaker 2: night of high school football in West Virginia. See you later.
• 52:04
Speaker 2: Until then, have fun and love somebody.
• 52:27
Speaker 1: We're proud to live here too.
