Latest / Coaches Corner / Luke Murray Postgame at Creighton
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We're joined here at court side by Luke Murray, the
- 0:03Speaker 1: Yukon assistant, and we'll talk to him in just a
- 0:06Speaker 1: moment and we'll get back to the stats and all
- 0:09Speaker 1: that stuff. But Luke joins us here court side. Will
- 0:11Speaker 1: coach you come to Creighton. It's always been tough. There've
- 0:14Speaker 1: been some real heartbreakers here, but you took care of
- 0:16Speaker 1: business tonight on a lot of levels. How do you
- 0:19Speaker 1: summarize what you just saw?
- 0:21Speaker 2: It's amazing feeling, honestly, you know, every time I've ever
- 0:24Speaker 2: been in here as a coach, even going back to
- 0:26Speaker 2: my Xavior days, they've been worse, you know, really close
- 0:28Speaker 2: games and heartbreaking losses a lot of times. So it
- 0:32Speaker 2: felt really great to play as well as we did.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Yeah, and we've been talking the last few weeks as
- 0:36Speaker 1: Yukon has not lost a game in seventy three days.
- 0:40Speaker 1: It had been some close ones, you know, five pointers,
- 0:43Speaker 1: whatever it may be, over time, this was more of
- 0:46Speaker 1: a complete game. I think that's what you guys are
- 0:48Speaker 1: kind of striving for. Right You want to try to
- 0:50Speaker 1: peak when you get into April, in March or March,
- 0:52Speaker 1: and I'm sorry February in March. Right in April let's
- 0:56Speaker 1: go to April.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I mean I thought we had some
- 0:59Speaker 2: of those games or close to those games in the
- 1:01Speaker 2: non conference, you know, beating some of the teams that
- 1:03Speaker 2: we did. You know, we had to play very well
- 1:05Speaker 2: for the most part and battle through injuries. But you're right,
- 1:08Speaker 2: I think the last couple of games in the Big East,
- 1:10Speaker 2: we haven't been particularly pleased with how we've played. Coach
- 1:13Speaker 2: has been talking a lot about trying to play a
- 1:14Speaker 2: full forty minute game, and we know Creighton is a
- 1:18Speaker 2: really difficult team to play, especially here at home. You know,
- 1:20Speaker 2: they do a great job of playing and transition and
- 1:22Speaker 2: really pushing the pace and are dangerous because they have
- 1:25Speaker 2: so many three point shooters. So yeah, I think it's
- 1:27Speaker 2: one of our more complete efforts in a while.
- 1:30Speaker 1: And you know, Dan, before the game was kind of funny.
- 1:32Speaker 1: You said, if we aren't driving a ball into Payton
- 1:35Speaker 1: scoring down deep, I'm gonna be pissed, in his words.
- 1:39Speaker 1: And then you come out and you light it up
- 1:41Speaker 1: from three point range. I guess you can't really argue.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Now three's better than two. But yeah, I mean that
- 1:47Speaker 2: was the focus of the game. You know, obviously, for
- 1:49Speaker 2: the last five years we've been dealing with that Ryan
- 1:52Speaker 2: Kulkbrenner issue around the rest issue. So you know, it's
- 1:55Speaker 2: a little bit of a different look this year with
- 1:57Speaker 2: their interior guys, and so that was the focus. You know,
- 1:59Speaker 2: it was a huge which part of our game plan
- 2:01Speaker 2: was to really attack the paint and put a lot
- 2:03Speaker 2: of pressure on the rim. I did think we got
- 2:05Speaker 2: on the offensive glass a lot, which opened up some
- 2:07Speaker 2: of those threes as well. But it was great to
- 2:09Speaker 2: see guys like Solo and Bray knocked the couple down
- 2:11Speaker 2: early to give us some confidence early in the game.
- 2:14Speaker 2: But yeah, I mean the game plan was definitely to
- 2:16Speaker 2: get it inside. I thought at times we did a
- 2:18Speaker 2: really good job of it. But always great when you
- 2:21Speaker 2: can make sixteen threes.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Yeah, Luke Murray with us thirty seven to twenty four.
- 2:24Speaker 1: The rebounding edge, and that's another thing Dan Sman harput
- 2:27Speaker 1: on we're not out rebounding people like we should be
- 2:30Speaker 1: doing night in and night out. I thought that was
- 2:32Speaker 1: a nice step forward. Even though Creton not a great
- 2:34Speaker 1: rebounding team.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Well yeah, I mean they don't go to the offensive glass.
- 2:38Speaker 2: That's not part of how they play, but they do
- 2:40Speaker 2: do a very good job on the defensive glass. You know,
- 2:42Speaker 2: so we had sort of modest goals for our offensive
- 2:45Speaker 2: rebounding going into the night, even though we would love
- 2:47Speaker 2: to try to hit him there. And I thought we
- 2:49Speaker 2: really we did it well there. I mean, Alex for
- 2:51Speaker 2: in particular five offensive rebounds. The thirteen offensive rebounds led
- 2:55Speaker 2: to twenty three or twenty five second chance points. So
- 2:58Speaker 2: really proud of the job we did on the offensive glass,
- 3:01Speaker 2: and I think that was sort of the difference in
- 3:03Speaker 2: terms of how dominant we were on the rebounding.
- 3:05Speaker 1: And one final thing on Sila's demri. He continues to
- 3:08Speaker 1: play offense well, I mean it's effective. He gets in
- 3:12Speaker 1: the paint, he finishes, and those are tough shots sometimes,
- 3:15Speaker 1: those lame runners, those tear drop shots. He seems to
- 3:19Speaker 1: have a real acumen for that.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would talk about his threes. You know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: he was three for four from three. You know, he
- 3:27Speaker 2: was three for seven in the pain I think, so, yeah, No,
- 3:30Speaker 2: he made a couple of nice floaters, especially late in
- 3:32Speaker 2: the first half. I remember one under a minute to go,
- 3:35Speaker 2: which was a big shot for us. But you know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: his his three point shooting continues to improve from early
- 3:40Speaker 2: on in the year, and it really makes us hard
- 3:42Speaker 2: to guard when we got guys like Solo and Bray
- 3:45Speaker 2: and Silas knocking down shots, obviously Ak knocking down shots,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and then Terris and Eric trying to be in forced inside.
- 3:52Speaker 1: All right, I got one final thing for you when
- 3:54Speaker 1: next practice, can you get riba and can you get
- 3:57Speaker 1: read to make some threes? They're the only guys who
- 4:00Speaker 1: did make a three.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Three. I thought Eric should have shot the one. He
- 4:02Speaker 2: didn't shoot it, he drove it. I thought, you're gonna
- 4:04Speaker 2: say free throws. We gotta go and make some free
- 4:05Speaker 2: throws before they make some threes. But we've been spending
- 4:09Speaker 2: a lot of time on that too, but not enough,
- 4:11Speaker 2: I guess. So we got to get back in the gym.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Free throw contest. I don't know, yeah, for sure. All right, coach,
- 4:16Speaker 1: appreciate it. All right, thanks, It'll be a fun ride home.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Thanks to you.
