- 0:08Speaker 1: And I invited you here. I thought I made myself
- 0:14Speaker 1: perfectly clear. When you're a guest to my home, you
- 0:21Speaker 1: gotta come to me empty. And I said, no, guests,
- 0:27Speaker 1: your presences presents enough. I already had too much stuff,
- 0:35Speaker 1: So how do you dare to surbey me?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome to I said, no gifts. I'm pretcher. Whyne girl,
- 0:54Speaker 2: We're right into it. I'm just feeling incredible. I got
- 0:59Speaker 2: here later than usual. I absolutely took the wrong freeway
- 1:03Speaker 2: to get here. In my defense, it was raining. It's raining,
- 1:08Speaker 2: and I was worrying about Claire Danes. We need to
- 1:11Speaker 2: put Claire Danes in something where she's not stressed out.
- 1:14Speaker 2: I just finished the beast inside me. I want to
- 1:18Speaker 2: see Claire Danes in a TV show or a movie
- 1:21Speaker 2: where she goes on vacation, just goes on, maybe even
- 1:24Speaker 2: a staycation. Maybe she just wakes up later than usual,
- 1:29Speaker 2: tools around the house, goes to a lunch that's nice,
- 1:32Speaker 2: but you know, not so expensive that it stresses her out.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I don't know. It goes to a boutique, doesn't just browse.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Maybe she splurges on a new bracelet or a watch
- 1:44Speaker 2: or something. No, not a watch is too stressful. Just
- 1:48Speaker 2: a nice little gift for herself. That's it once where
- 1:52Speaker 2: she's not trembling, and I love the trembling. I just
- 1:56Speaker 2: it's every time I watch a Claire Danes vehicle, I'm
- 2:00Speaker 2: stressed for her. So let's give her a break. Claire
- 2:04Speaker 2: reach out. So that took me onto the one thirty
- 2:07Speaker 2: four I was supposed to get on the five. That
- 2:10Speaker 2: added some time to my commute, and so that leads
- 2:14Speaker 2: us to me talking to Claire Danes directly. I think
- 2:19Speaker 2: that's all I've thought about this morning, to be honest,
- 2:22Speaker 2: the show had a big impact on me. She went
- 2:25Speaker 2: through a lot in the beasts in me, and we
- 2:29Speaker 2: should talk about I guess the other thing is the Patreon.
- 2:32Speaker 2: Of course. I just need to remind you about the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Patreon existing Patreon dot com slash I said no gifts
- 2:38Speaker 2: upon the release of this episode. I think we'll just
- 2:41Speaker 2: be starting season four of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,
- 2:44Speaker 2: and I'll be getting into it with the gals. I
- 2:49Speaker 2: am the expert on the gals, and it looks like
- 2:51Speaker 2: it's going to be a very big season. Things are
- 2:54Speaker 2: falling apart again for mom Talk, and so we wish
- 2:58Speaker 2: them all the best get on to Patreon. I also
- 3:01Speaker 2: recap every commercial I see while watching that show, so
- 3:04Speaker 2: if you're more of someone who cares about commercials, you'll
- 3:07Speaker 2: also get to hear me talk about neutrophile and all
- 3:09Speaker 2: of these hair care journeys people are going on. It's important.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Get over there. Oh the rain, it's gotten me into
- 3:17Speaker 2: a mood. Let's get into the podcast. I love today's guest.
- 3:21Speaker 2: It's Stephanie Courtney. Stephanie, welcome to I said no gift.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Hello, I'm thrilled to be here.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Does the rain stress you out while you're driving? Yes?
- 3:30Speaker 3: And then I'm always like everyone else has the problem,
- 3:32Speaker 3: and then I do something dumb and I'm like, ah, crap.
- 3:34Speaker 2: It's me. I think I finally admitted to myself today
- 3:37Speaker 2: that I am also as bad as everybody else in
- 3:39Speaker 2: the rain.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I'm always like, be very careful, and then i do
- 3:42Speaker 3: the most rash, idiotic move. I'm just like, I'm a patron.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I gotta get there. Yeah, I mean I literally took
- 3:48Speaker 2: the wrong freeway. I am as bad, if not worse
- 3:51Speaker 2: than most people on the road while driving in the rain.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Are you from California?
- 3:57Speaker 3: No, I'm from New York. Just outside and you're like
- 4:00Speaker 3: thirty minutes outside of New York City and the staburbs.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Okay, so you grew up driving in the snow or
- 4:05Speaker 2: this kind of thing and actual weather.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Yeah, but I feel I had to. I lived in
- 4:10Speaker 3: New York for six years and happily didn't.
- 4:12Speaker 2: Drive at all. Right, and then I.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Was like kicking and screaming getting used to driving again,
- 4:18Speaker 3: right in the worst cars that Craigslist or the back
- 4:22Speaker 3: of the LA Weekly could cough up.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I just I don't know what inspired this, but somebody
- 4:28Speaker 2: got me thinking about a car I had sold on
- 4:30Speaker 2: Craigslist when I moved. I was in New York for
- 4:33Speaker 2: a little bit in twenty the mid It doesn't matter
- 4:35Speaker 2: what time period. I sold my car, my old Honda
- 4:38Speaker 2: Fit and I was like, where is it now? And
- 4:40Speaker 2: I looked up the VIN number and founded it's made
- 4:42Speaker 2: its way to New Jersey. Oh they've painted it orange.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Oh what. I was thrilled to see it was still
- 4:49Speaker 2: alive for a business or for fun. I don't know,
- 4:52Speaker 2: that's a great question, but it looks it's in better
- 4:55Speaker 2: condition than when I sold it to them.
- 4:56Speaker 3: I love it.
- 4:57Speaker 2: I sold it to them with a big crack in
- 4:58Speaker 2: the windshield and absolutely filthy. They've taken good care of it.
- 5:04Speaker 3: I still see my Hyundai, I think out there because
- 5:08Speaker 3: I was like, there's a dent by the gas gap,
- 5:11Speaker 3: and I'm like, there's a white.
- 5:13Speaker 2: With a dent by the gas I'm like, hello, old pal,
- 5:16Speaker 2: just longing for this Hyundai. It probably is.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Who knows it's passed by a few. Yeah. We sold
- 5:22Speaker 3: it to a friend very good price, and then he
- 5:25Speaker 3: sold it and now I'm like, no, no, Now it's on
- 5:27Speaker 3: its own adventure.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's own journey.
- 5:29Speaker 3: It's going to be a Pixar movie. It's gonna win awards.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Specifically hyundaive oriented Pixarnday.
- 5:35Speaker 3: With a tape deck, enjoy it.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Does your car now have a tape deck or a
- 5:40Speaker 2: CD player or anything?
- 5:41Speaker 3: No, now it's all Wi Fi cloud right.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I kind of miss having at least a CD player. Uh.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I feel like that could be useful at some point
- 5:51Speaker 2: for me.
- 5:52Speaker 3: My sister one of the awful cars she bought had
- 5:55Speaker 3: a CD player in the back, like where you would
- 5:57Speaker 3: put ten CDs.
- 5:58Speaker 2: I forgot about the and it would shuffle the songs. Ooh,
- 6:02Speaker 2: the CD change.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Yes, it was just like David Gray David Gray, David Gray,
- 6:07Speaker 3: Alanis Morissett and like it was a lot of difficult
- 6:09Speaker 3: I just remember like this a lot.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Yeah, the CD changer seems like such a luxurious thing
- 6:14Speaker 2: for a minute, but then it's like, actually, that's terrible.
- 6:17Speaker 2: You have to really think about what ten ten CDs
- 6:19Speaker 2: you're going to put in there. I'm very fickle and picky.
- 6:22Speaker 2: I want to be changing things constantly. What if you're
- 6:25Speaker 2: suddenly not in the mood and the other nine CDs
- 6:28Speaker 2: in there aren't what you need.
- 6:29Speaker 3: If you are coming in crying, I'm like, I need
- 6:34Speaker 3: I need a better song. I have to cater, I
- 6:36Speaker 3: have to get.
- 6:37Speaker 2: My brain here. How often were people like going, you
- 6:41Speaker 2: have to go to the trunk, Yeah, and then replace
- 6:44Speaker 2: all of the CD That actually seems like the worst
- 6:46Speaker 2: possible piece of technology.
- 6:48Speaker 3: And forget about putting your suitcase back there. Oh of course,
- 6:50Speaker 3: because you're going to destroy on whatever.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and you don't want any liquid. I'm not going
- 6:54Speaker 2: to be throwing a gallon of milk back there or
- 6:56Speaker 2: any loose liquids. You don't want that getting destroyed.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Now, it's just like a very sensitive area, right.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You can't like carry soil. There's nothing you can do
- 7:05Speaker 2: with that trunk but put CDs in there. Oh what
- 7:08Speaker 2: a bizarre I had totally forgotten. But what a luxury
- 7:12Speaker 2: at the time it was to have CDs in your trunk.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I believe I had a tape deck with a
- 7:18Speaker 3: wire like I had the wire.
- 7:19Speaker 2: Oh of course they went to your CD.
- 7:21Speaker 3: Yeah. Well no, it was an adapter. But all I
- 7:24Speaker 3: could do was the cassette. So I was just like, well,
- 7:28Speaker 3: I'm listening to high school in early college. I guess
- 7:32Speaker 3: just the Sundays and all the Sundays.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Oh, I adore this. Why we need more the Sundays,
- 7:38Speaker 2: not enough Sunday's materials?
- 7:40Speaker 3: I agree. I agree that was a perfect album.
- 7:43Speaker 2: What was it?
- 7:43Speaker 1: Reading?
- 7:44Speaker 2: A reading, writing arithmetic? I think so the one? Does that?
- 7:49Speaker 2: Is that? The one with the seashell on the front? Yes? Yes,
- 7:52Speaker 2: And then there's one. I think there may have only
- 7:54Speaker 2: been two Sundays albums. Is that?
- 7:56Speaker 1: Yes?
- 7:56Speaker 3: But I never caught onto the second one. I guess
- 7:59Speaker 3: the first one was.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Just so if the second one is that the second
- 8:03Speaker 2: one have that's where the story ends? Is that or something?
- 8:07Speaker 2: I think that's the first one. God, Oh, what a
- 8:12Speaker 2: great banand.
- 8:12Speaker 3: Beautiful moody rainy day.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Well, hey, yeah, this is a good Sunday's Day. Yes,
- 8:18Speaker 2: and I kind of a hard band to kind of replicate.
- 8:21Speaker 2: So I feel like whatever influence they have, you don't
- 8:24Speaker 2: notice as much in other stuff. Right.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it was sort of its own what would you
- 8:29Speaker 3: call it?
- 8:30Speaker 2: It's kind of jangly, but her voice is.
- 8:32Speaker 3: So ethereal yeah, so pretty. It could hit notes that
- 8:36Speaker 3: like nobody.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Can do it, unbelievable. No, I feel like there was
- 8:39Speaker 2: a do you know the band Japanese Breakfast, Yes, her
- 8:43Speaker 2: first I think her first album had a little Sunday's
- 8:46Speaker 2: ness to it. But wow, what a great band. You've
- 8:50Speaker 2: got a good taste.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Well, thank you. I was, you know, and I listened
- 8:53Speaker 3: to your Wennie mcclennan Covey interview, which I loved.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I loved. I love her, Okay, so you don't.
- 9:01Speaker 3: No, No, I am falling in love with you and
- 9:04Speaker 3: I'm already in love with her. But we get into
- 9:07Speaker 3: such deep dives on missing persons. Oh and we actually
- 9:12Speaker 3: went and saw missing person. She listen, the band sounds
- 9:17Speaker 3: the same, the same, and she's wonderful. She's lived a life,
- 9:21Speaker 3: She's lived a hard life.
- 9:24Speaker 2: What's happened? I'm not familiar.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Well, I know Wendy knows more, and I feel like
- 9:27Speaker 3: I'm stealing her stories. But I think, uh, first of all,
- 9:31Speaker 3: we shook hands, Wenny and I did. We're gonna do
- 9:34Speaker 3: a documentary on Dale Bozio.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Oh amazing.
- 9:36Speaker 3: We have to do it because her story is so interesting.
- 9:39Speaker 3: I guess she moved out here originally to be a playboy.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Bunny checked out. The situation is like, no, never mind,
- 9:48Speaker 3: never mind, and then joins up the I'm skipping over
- 9:51Speaker 3: a lot of important details that will be in the documentary,
- 9:55Speaker 3: but uh, just we would just sing the deep cuts
- 9:58Speaker 3: to each other on set of the Gold like.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Great, before you make that documentary, just promise me that
- 10:05Speaker 2: you'll first make a documentary about the Beatles. We don't
- 10:08Speaker 2: have enough of those. I don't think we've covered that band.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Just a specific six months, just one that they Oh
- 10:17Speaker 3: my god, I know, No.
- 10:18Speaker 2: That's a great More bands deserve documentary.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Especially if they made such a hit like The Sundays
- 10:24Speaker 3: and Missing Persons like no one sounded like you.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And there are stories that we haven't heard a billion
- 10:29Speaker 2: times already.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Yes, women, musicians, singers.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I'm trying to think of any female fronted bands that
- 10:38Speaker 2: have had great documentaries, not.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Even Pat Benattar.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Right, yeah, I'm like, let's see. I mean I also
- 10:46Speaker 2: have a bad memory, so this is part of the problem.
- 10:48Speaker 2: But what was the last band that I I don't know?
- 10:53Speaker 3: How about this? Dione Faris remember wild Seed wall Flower?
- 10:56Speaker 2: No, I'm not familiar.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Holy moly, it's another perfect album. She's from another band
- 11:01Speaker 3: and I'm an old lady with an adult brain, but
- 11:03Speaker 3: she was like a kid in this previous band and
- 11:06Speaker 3: then this was her.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I know what just do? Oh? Yeah, of course, of course.
- 11:13Speaker 3: That album is amazing. David Allan Greer also joins in
- 11:17Speaker 3: and does like they do some skits in between that
- 11:19Speaker 3: are so amazing. Anyway, just wild Seed Wildflower.
- 11:23Speaker 2: And there's not a documentary.
- 11:24Speaker 3: About Nope, but that's my next one. My child's gonna
- 11:27Speaker 3: have to work early because his money's God.
- 11:31Speaker 2: You just dump all of your money into music documentary.
- 11:34Speaker 3: I'm sorry you still love mother, but look.
- 11:36Speaker 2: At all of these bands you can learn about. Are
- 11:42Speaker 2: you a musician at all?
- 11:44Speaker 3: I'm a singer. I love to sing, and I took
- 11:47Speaker 3: piano lessons and then I quit in a snit after three.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Years, three years.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I was bad.
- 11:52Speaker 2: I was just bad. Was it as a kid? Yeah?
- 11:55Speaker 2: I was a kid.
- 11:55Speaker 3: And as soon as it was like this is we're
- 11:57Speaker 3: going to center on cords, I'm like, no one can
- 11:59Speaker 3: do this, no id and then I quit.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Wow. I mean I was bad, and that didn't stop
- 12:06Speaker 2: me from taking ten years of lissense in piano. Piano?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Are you good?
- 12:10Speaker 3: You can you? Oh?
- 12:12Speaker 2: I can form chords.
- 12:13Speaker 3: But someone framed it really well. They were like, are
- 12:16Speaker 3: you a codebreaker? And my son loves piano and has
- 12:19Speaker 3: stuck with it and he is a code breaker brain
- 12:22Speaker 3: and is like, are you good at languages?
- 12:24Speaker 2: He's good at languages. Interesting, I kind of ain't.
- 12:27Speaker 3: And so yeah, it's that kind of I understand.
- 12:31Speaker 2: There's like kind of a math brainness to it. Maybe, Yeah,
- 12:35Speaker 2: that makes sense, which is kind of counterintuitive because you
- 12:38Speaker 2: kind of think of music as this very emotional yes, uh,
- 12:41Speaker 2: free flowing thing.
- 12:42Speaker 3: But that's the thing, it's the both sides of the
- 12:44Speaker 3: brain coming together.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Right, So it really requires somebody smart. Yeah, someone like
- 12:50Speaker 2: me is going to struggle, No, really have a hard time.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Like other people do that for me And I put
- 12:56Speaker 3: it in my CD player, press shuffle.
- 12:59Speaker 2: I mean, I think part of my problem with piano
- 13:00Speaker 2: lessons was I wasn't getting to play anything that I
- 13:04Speaker 2: actually wanted to play. There was no like nothing to
- 13:06Speaker 2: aspire to. Yeah, and so I'm sitting there with like
- 13:09Speaker 2: my eighty year old teacher who's like making it as
- 13:13Speaker 2: boring as possible. It's like if you, I feel like
- 13:16Speaker 2: with a kid, you just show them something that's fun
- 13:18Speaker 2: to play and then allowed them to do something. I
- 13:21Speaker 2: don't know.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, you know. I think that also helped because
- 13:25Speaker 3: a few years after taking his first lesson, him and
- 13:28Speaker 3: his friends got a band together.
- 13:30Speaker 2: Oh see, here we go.
- 13:31Speaker 3: One of the dads can play every instrument, and so
- 13:33Speaker 3: he pared down seven Nation Army for them. Oh how fun,
- 13:37Speaker 3: and they're rocked out and they were so great. I
- 13:40Speaker 3: remember my piano teacher. One thing that drove me crazy
- 13:43Speaker 3: is that she would always be cooking dinner when I
- 13:45Speaker 3: came over, and it smelled really good and like it
- 13:49Speaker 3: was because it's clear, it was like a balanced meal,
- 13:52Speaker 3: and I'm just like.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Oh god, I want that so bad. That's that's pot ROAs.
- 13:56Speaker 2: It's so unprofessional of her, damn it. I know. I
- 13:59Speaker 2: was just like, I don't even get to eat that.
- 14:01Speaker 2: That's very handsle on Gretel as well, very witch with
- 14:04Speaker 2: the yes.
- 14:05Speaker 3: It's like, dope, you don't get to.
- 14:07Speaker 2: My whole trick during piano lessons was I would ask
- 14:10Speaker 2: for a glass of water and then take as long
- 14:13Speaker 2: as possible drinking the water. So fifteen minutes of my
- 14:16Speaker 2: lesson would just be me like sipping a glass of
- 14:18Speaker 2: water and then maybe being like, oh, could you show
- 14:20Speaker 2: me because she had a garden in her backyard. Why
- 14:22Speaker 2: don't you show me the garden.
- 14:23Speaker 3: They always have a garden.
- 14:24Speaker 2: They always have a garden.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Yeah, they always have interests.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Yeah, you bastards.
- 14:29Speaker 3: My son's piano teacher is amazing because she's just a character, Like,
- 14:32Speaker 3: my son's a little on the shire side.
- 14:34Speaker 2: How did you find a teacher for him?
- 14:35Speaker 3: She teaches at the school, so he already trusted her.
- 14:39Speaker 3: She's fun, and she's loud and just like doesn't care,
- 14:43Speaker 3: you know, and so and I don't know. I think
- 14:46Speaker 3: that just she provides that kind of passion. And then
- 14:48Speaker 3: he's got the map and then like they.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Right, I'm starting to wonder how my mom had my
- 14:52Speaker 2: piano teacher. She wasn't in our neighborhood or anything. She
- 14:56Speaker 2: was neighborhoods away church. Maybe it was it must have
- 14:59Speaker 2: been somebody church, a panlod or something like that. Yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 2: that makes sense because otherwise you had no connection to
- 15:06Speaker 2: missus Ziegler. Interesting. What's happening? Very interesting? But the other
- 15:12Speaker 2: thing with my mom, like we would kick and scream
- 15:15Speaker 2: off the entire way to the piano list if I mean,
- 15:18Speaker 2: I guess God bless my mom for putting up with it,
- 15:20Speaker 2: because if I was the parent in this situation, I
- 15:22Speaker 2: would have just given up and said, okay, just lie
- 15:26Speaker 2: around on the floor.
- 15:27Speaker 3: I yeah, me too. I was waiting for it. I
- 15:29Speaker 3: was just like, oh, right, the three year mark and
- 15:32Speaker 3: then I'm like, wait, you get this? You understand this interesting?
- 15:35Speaker 2: Do you think he's going to have some sort of
- 15:37Speaker 2: career in it? I?
- 15:39Speaker 3: I think here's what I want to do. And this
- 15:42Speaker 3: is how they sat in first grade. When he was
- 15:44Speaker 3: in first grade. They were like, don't worry about your
- 15:46Speaker 3: child being the best reader of the earliest reader. As
- 15:50Speaker 3: long as they enjoy reading. I want him to enjoy it, right,
- 15:52Speaker 3: and if that means playing around with friends, amen, he
- 15:56Speaker 3: still enjoys learning because it's like a challenge, that's great, right,
- 16:00Speaker 3: but I think he's gonna I think it'll be a
- 16:02Speaker 3: tool in his tool belt.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I'll say that right for him. Yeah, I think that's
- 16:07Speaker 2: having You can't have music beat the number one thing
- 16:09Speaker 2: at this point anyway.
- 16:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess.
- 16:12Speaker 2: Yeah, tough path to follow as far as making money, yea,
- 16:18Speaker 2: yeah at fourteen.
- 16:19Speaker 3: Yeah, come on the way mom's spending.
- 16:23Speaker 2: On these documentaries. He's got to get into a band
- 16:25Speaker 2: that you'll make a documentary about.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Oh, we'll finally have something to talk about, me and him.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Have you been to any other concerts recently?
- 16:34Speaker 3: Let me think we saw David Byrne when he was
- 16:38Speaker 3: That was amazing.
- 16:38Speaker 2: Did you see No, I didn't. I've never seen him live.
- 16:41Speaker 2: It feels like a mistake on my part.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Oh, enjoy him the next time he comes around. He's
- 16:46Speaker 3: got like we saw him when he did Utopia, which
- 16:49Speaker 3: was fantastic, and you always think like, oh, this is
- 16:52Speaker 3: his crowning jewel or whatever, and now he has a
- 16:55Speaker 3: whole slew of other young you know, in strumentalist musicians
- 17:01Speaker 3: is another. Sometimes they say I haven't heard it too old,
- 17:05Speaker 3: and they were amazing a whole new shown.
- 17:08Speaker 2: He was very good at staying with it. Oh my gosh,
- 17:12Speaker 2: everyone should look to David Byrne for his like if
- 17:15Speaker 2: you don't want to seem like an extremely old person. Yes,
- 17:19Speaker 2: because he still seems like he's in his thirties.
- 17:22Speaker 3: Yes, he has discovered it.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And I guess part of it is riding his bike
- 17:25Speaker 2: all the time. Yes, won't do it. I won't do it.
- 17:29Speaker 2: Not in La. Are you kidding that?
- 17:31Speaker 3: Now?
- 17:32Speaker 2: Oh my god, I can't imagine.
- 17:34Speaker 3: Do you imagine Clardine's on a bike? Could that be
- 17:37Speaker 3: an next show? Put her on a bike in La
- 17:40Speaker 3: in the country trembling loop. Oh, she's wonderful. She's a
- 17:44Speaker 3: master at the craft shew.
- 17:45Speaker 2: She's so good, but she's always stressed out.
- 17:47Speaker 3: Yeah, that would be funny. I was thinking like an
- 17:49Speaker 3: episode where like the therapist is like, it wasn't your fault,
- 17:52Speaker 3: You're off the hook, and then that's like halfway through
- 17:54Speaker 3: and then she's like.
- 17:56Speaker 2: A free right, a free because the last three things
- 18:00Speaker 2: I've seen her in were The Beast in Me, which
- 18:03Speaker 2: she's so stressed out. To see that, it's really great,
- 18:05Speaker 2: it's really exciting.
- 18:06Speaker 3: I love him too.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Yeah, he's fantastic. Matthew Reese have you ever heard his accent?
- 18:10Speaker 3: No, it's Welsh, right.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I need to look up an interview with him
- 18:13Speaker 2: because I'm curious what he sounds like when he's not
- 18:15Speaker 2: doing an American accent.
- 18:16Speaker 3: I can't imagine.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Yeah, because he's got an excellent American accent.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Well, we've got great actors coming out of Hoyle's. Who
- 18:24Speaker 3: is who's the oh gosh, the one who is in
- 18:26Speaker 3: the the Kinsey Show, that Kinsey show.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Let me see here, let's see. I'm willing to do
- 18:34Speaker 2: some online research show. I know I'm not good enough
- 18:38Speaker 2: research Masters of Sex. Masters of Sex is what it's called,
- 18:41Speaker 2: and it's what's her name? And and what's his name?
- 18:45Speaker 2: And his name is Michael Sheen Michael. He's Welsh, also
- 18:48Speaker 2: from Wales as well.
- 18:49Speaker 3: Wow, I know we've.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Got some you would never know. It's a crucible. Great.
- 18:53Speaker 2: Maybe the Welsh accent is not that thick and yeah,
- 18:56Speaker 2: maybe it's like a neutral, more of a neutral thing.
- 18:59Speaker 2: I feel like that frequently with Irish accents, sometimes you
- 19:03Speaker 2: can almost mistake that for an American. That's right, there's
- 19:06Speaker 2: certain and then sometimes you hear an Irish accent and
- 19:09Speaker 2: you're like, I that's another language.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yeah. I there's a show called Love hate. I don't
- 19:14Speaker 3: know if you've ever heard of it, but it's fantastic.
- 19:16Speaker 3: It's about like a drug gang in Ireland and one
- 19:20Speaker 3: guy is from Limerick and I can't understand one word
- 19:25Speaker 3: and he's incredible, and you just need the subtitles. But
- 19:30Speaker 3: it's like a backwards It's like every vowel is something else.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Right. There are a lot of these British shows that
- 19:37Speaker 2: I tried to power through without subtitles. What a mistake. Nah, man,
- 19:41Speaker 2: we're too far. Oh yeah, there will be once where
- 19:44Speaker 2: I just like, I'll give up because I don't understand
- 19:46Speaker 2: what's going on. I finally have committed to using well
- 19:49Speaker 2: subtitles on almost everything at this point, but especially with
- 19:53Speaker 2: these thick accents, because otherwise it's you're watching him show
- 19:56Speaker 2: in a foreign language.
- 19:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Yeah, is that how British people field watching American shows?
- 20:01Speaker 3: Whenever they do an impression of us, not like professionally,
- 20:06Speaker 3: I mean like when they try to echo what we
- 20:08Speaker 3: sound like. It's flat and bland and.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It must be easier to understand. Yeah, because we're slower.
- 20:16Speaker 2: We're slower. We really like stretch the words out. Yeah,
- 20:21Speaker 2: maybe Southern is a different story. I've never since.
- 20:25Speaker 3: Had an English or Irish person ever asked me to
- 20:27Speaker 3: repeat anything.
- 20:28Speaker 2: You know what I mean, they get it. I assume
- 20:31Speaker 2: that it's just because they don't care about what I'm saying,
- 20:34Speaker 2: no interest in what I have to say.
- 20:36Speaker 3: It all like, hey, guys, clean up your own mask
- 20:37Speaker 3: before you tell me anything.
- 20:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but I've seen Claire in this. I saw her
- 20:43Speaker 2: in Fleischmann Is in Trouble, which was great, that's great,
- 20:46Speaker 2: also very stressed, and then Homeland where it was like
- 20:50Speaker 2: a new age of her.
- 20:52Speaker 3: Being stress during this stress character, it's just on the edge.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Yeah, and it was like, wow, full panic all the time,
- 20:59Speaker 2: and you buy it because there's a bomb about to
- 21:01Speaker 2: go on, yeah, which is great, but you start to
- 21:03Speaker 2: worry about her mental health.
- 21:05Speaker 3: Or off and her drug use in that show.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Oh that's right, she went through it and pills. And
- 21:12Speaker 2: then she's got Mandy nearby, who's such a comforting source
- 21:14Speaker 2: of you know, I would love to have Mandy as
- 21:17Speaker 2: a teammate, said Everyone's grandpa. But yeah, I think it's
- 21:22Speaker 2: time for just one show or movie. Yeah, it's even
- 21:26Speaker 2: just an eighty minute long movie where she has a
- 21:28Speaker 2: nice time.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Like, is there a like a novel from the
- 21:32Speaker 3: late eighteen hundreds, where it's like gardening, yes, discovering yourself
- 21:37Speaker 3: through the growth of your hyacinth. We're all growing credits.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Just once, even if it's a bomb, it'll just be
- 21:47Speaker 2: a nice break for Yeah, a wonderful time. Well, speaking
- 21:51Speaker 2: of things that are stressful and make me my lip tremble, Stephanie,
- 21:56Speaker 2: I was looking forward to having you here on the
- 21:58Speaker 2: podcast today. She'll come by, we'll have a pleasant time,
- 22:03Speaker 2: cozy time while it's raining outside. We'll move on with
- 22:05Speaker 2: our days. You know. I broke my back to get
- 22:09Speaker 2: here to the studio, thinking we're going to have a
- 22:11Speaker 2: good time. And I sit down and you walk in.
- 22:15Speaker 2: The podcast is called. I said, no gifts and you're holding.
- 22:18Speaker 2: First of all, it was a garbage bag, and I thought, okay,
- 22:21Speaker 2: so she brought her garbage. But then I noticed through
- 22:24Speaker 2: the bag a beautifully wrapped gift.
- 22:27Speaker 3: I respect you, but I also need to live with myself.
- 22:32Speaker 3: And I was raised a certain way, okay, And I
- 22:36Speaker 3: did put it in a trash bag to take the
- 22:38Speaker 3: shine off it, to get it past the guards. Yes, exactly,
- 22:43Speaker 3: your guards they are they hold a lot of authority here,
- 22:48Speaker 3: Yes they do. I put the usual amount of effort
- 22:52Speaker 3: in nothing extra, and it might not even be for you.
- 22:57Speaker 3: You know what, Now, don't put me on the back,
- 22:59Speaker 3: wasn't it? What do you even mean for you?
- 23:00Speaker 1: Well?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Should we open it here on the podcast? Yeah? Why not?
- 23:03Speaker 2: All right, you've got time to burn. Well, I put
- 23:09Speaker 2: it on the floor earlier, if you wouldn't mind picking
- 23:11Speaker 2: it up for me. I don't mind that. I do
- 23:13Speaker 2: mind it's on the floor. I will say this is
- 23:17Speaker 2: I mean, no offense to past guests. I think this
- 23:19Speaker 2: is my favorite wrapping paper that's ever been on the show.
- 23:22Speaker 2: It's like a woodprint. Yes, it's like uh and it
- 23:26Speaker 2: feels almost like a texture of wood.
- 23:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I'm going to need that paper back. Yes, you'll get
- 23:31Speaker 2: it back in good time. And it also has a
- 23:34Speaker 2: monarch butterfly and this beautiful green ribbon.
- 23:38Speaker 3: Yes. If you twist the top half of that butterfly. Yeah,
- 23:42Speaker 3: then and then you let it go, it'll fly away
- 23:46Speaker 3: or fall dead.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Wait is that true?
- 23:49Speaker 1: Wait?
- 23:49Speaker 2: What do I do here?
- 23:50Speaker 3: You twist the top?
- 23:51Speaker 2: You see how it's this little rubbery part. No, I
- 23:53Speaker 2: believe the.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Top yes exactly, yes, so give that a go.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I'm twisting. Oh, I've never seen some thing like this before.
- 24:01Speaker 2: This is for the video of you, r listener. If
- 24:03Speaker 2: you're just listening, you are missing out on a gorgeous
- 24:06Speaker 2: thing that's about to happen. Hopefully.
- 24:08Speaker 3: I'm gonna put my glasses on again because I don't.
- 24:10Speaker 2: Trust you want to see this thing? Am I doing
- 24:12Speaker 2: it correct? You're doing great?
- 24:13Speaker 3: Now I let go yep, and then I feel you
- 24:15Speaker 3: let go to the bottom part two. So nervous, I know.
- 24:18Speaker 1: It.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Day, I'm gonna get this right for the listener. I'll
- 24:23Speaker 2: at least give you the twisting of Let's see if
- 24:25Speaker 2: you can hear that. Okay, now I just throw it.
- 24:29Speaker 3: Yep.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I'm so nervous. There you do it.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I think the point is you put it in a card,
- 24:36Speaker 3: all twist it up.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Oh you put it. You put it so it's scared.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Exactly, and they open the card and then it's like this, Oh,
- 24:45Speaker 3: so you can use this.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Again, startling butterfly. I'm gonna do it one more time
- 24:49Speaker 2: because I know the listener loves a quiet, twisting noise.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Let's do as tight as possible here. It's gonna be dangerous.
- 24:59Speaker 2: This could blind somebody.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I'm a risk taker.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Okay, that was beautiful. That was the best. I love
- 25:07Speaker 2: this thing.
- 25:08Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:08Speaker 3: I catered a wedding once, uh, and they had lab
- 25:12Speaker 3: grown butterflies inside envelopes like folded paper, and they're like,
- 25:16Speaker 3: just pass here's a basket. I'm in my tuxedo to
- 25:19Speaker 3: the guests, pass them out and tell them be gentle.
- 25:22Speaker 3: But everyone's coming at once and they're like thanks, and
- 25:24Speaker 3: I'm like, oh, got be gentle. And then they were
- 25:26Speaker 3: like when they say I do, open your thing, and it.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Was just just tons of dead butterfly, half dead butterfly, like.
- 25:34Speaker 3: Crawling everyone like a couple escape, but they were like
- 25:37Speaker 3: lab grown. So they were like, I don't understand.
- 25:40Speaker 2: That's horrifying.
- 25:42Speaker 3: I wonder if that marriage left. What a terrible ITEA
- 25:47Speaker 3: is a terrible Nobody.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Tested that before. Clearly that wasn't going to work.
- 25:51Speaker 3: No one cared, no one asked a question, passed the
- 25:54Speaker 3: first question, can it be done? And then there's a
- 25:58Speaker 3: lab that will do it for you.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Now your wedding is covered in dead bugs yep, crawling, crawling,
- 26:05Speaker 2: and like the guests are like, I don't know what
- 26:06Speaker 2: to do, Like there's do I save it?
- 26:08Speaker 3: No, We're going to receptions.
- 26:10Speaker 2: What a distraction?
- 26:13Speaker 3: It was rough and I was complicit, like all of
- 26:15Speaker 3: us and our tuxedos were looking at each other like.
- 26:19Speaker 2: I'm complicit. This is your Tyra Banks documentary. Did you
- 26:24Speaker 2: watch that?
- 26:24Speaker 3: No?
- 26:25Speaker 2: But I paid for it? No, my kidding.
- 26:26Speaker 3: I haven't watched it, but I have to. Yes, there's
- 26:28Speaker 3: a lot I need to watch. Gush, darn it.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Okay, well, let's open this gift. Here. I wrote something
- 26:34Speaker 2: says dearest Bridgard, this is for you, exo stiff than
- 26:38Speaker 2: it is for you. Okay, fine, I'll open it up.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I'm trying to be careful with this.
- 26:44Speaker 3: It's done.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Oh, it's beautiful. I wanted to not be totally shredded.
- 26:48Speaker 2: I had to use two sheets. Let's see here. Oh
- 26:52Speaker 2: where did you get this wrapping paper?
- 26:54Speaker 3: Let me think I'd like to go to like paper
- 26:57Speaker 3: sores or whatever. Then they've got them, and she up.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Against the wall. That's the best wrapping paper. So fun.
- 27:03Speaker 3: And if you just get a bunch, then you always
- 27:05Speaker 3: have some night.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Okay, getting in here, Oh you might need okay, Oh,
- 27:11Speaker 2: let's see, we'll see. I think you can. Really you're
- 27:13Speaker 2: underestimating my finger strength here.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Don't look at the box. The box isn't the the Yeah,
- 27:19Speaker 3: if you do that, I think, yeah, yeah, yeah, you've
- 27:23Speaker 3: got it.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Look at you. Okay, and then that.
- 27:29Speaker 3: Packing tape.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Okay, we're getting okay, we're getting a door to the tissue.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I am going to need that.
- 27:40Speaker 2: You're just gonna keep saying that this is a new
- 27:43Speaker 2: type of rap.
- 27:44Speaker 3: I see it everywhere. I think it's just it's you
- 27:47Speaker 3: got extra cushioning.
- 27:48Speaker 2: It's almost like fish net or something. You could catch
- 27:51Speaker 2: an animal in this. Okay, Oh and I look at
- 27:56Speaker 2: this little there several little birds I'm finding adorable little
- 28:00Speaker 2: included little pink and orange and green birds are almost
- 28:07Speaker 2: like sherbetrbet colored.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Let's see here, put them anywhere.
- 28:12Speaker 2: These My table is now filling with adorable small birds.
- 28:17Speaker 3: And oh my god, this is so cute.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Where did these come from? I don't know.
- 28:21Speaker 3: Somewhere a week that I skip therapy, I went on birds,
- 28:26Speaker 3: birds and paper.
- 28:27Speaker 2: There's now this, there's this kind of crimped paper. And yeah,
- 28:30Speaker 2: they've got a nest. I'm creating a nest on my
- 28:32Speaker 2: table again. The listener is loving this to me, just crafting,
- 28:37Speaker 2: taking a hard turn to me crafting. Okay, make sure
- 28:41Speaker 2: I've got all the birds. Okay, now we're pulling out. Okay, now.
- 28:48Speaker 3: With an explanation, are you ready?
- 28:50Speaker 2: Yes, I absolutely. Let me describe what I'm seeing. This
- 28:54Speaker 2: is a little wood box that's like kind of what color?
- 28:56Speaker 2: Would you say? This is cherry cherry and it has
- 29:01Speaker 2: it's like a little treasure chest with a switch on
- 29:04Speaker 2: the top.
- 29:05Speaker 3: Okay, I would like for you to set it on
- 29:08Speaker 3: the table, and I say, carefully, all right, this is
- 29:10Speaker 3: called a useless box. What did you call me? I'm joking.
- 29:15Speaker 3: It's called a useless box. And if you keep your
- 29:18Speaker 3: fingers away from the top, but just move the lever, okay, right,
- 29:22Speaker 3: So like maybe I'm scared, hold it from the other
- 29:26Speaker 3: hold it from the lever side.
- 29:27Speaker 2: Let's see here exactly.
- 29:28Speaker 3: And then just with your other finger, just flick the lever.
- 29:33Speaker 2: I'm so scared, and so a little.
- 29:38Speaker 3: Finger by what by flicking the lever, a finger comes
- 29:42Speaker 3: out and pushes it back. Oh so it's completely useless.
- 29:48Speaker 2: What where did you get this thing?
- 29:51Speaker 3: My husband found it somewhere and it is the funniest thing.
- 29:55Speaker 2: It's none of your business.
- 29:56Speaker 3: Box, that's right, that's right, And it's called the useless box.
- 30:00Speaker 3: And it will never let you see what's inside because
- 30:03Speaker 3: it's not on your biz listener.
- 30:05Speaker 2: It's almost kind of hard to describe. It's like I
- 30:08Speaker 2: hold the box and it has a little the lever
- 30:10Speaker 2: is like one of those little switches that it's like
- 30:12Speaker 2: a little old timy like old timey switch and when
- 30:14Speaker 2: you push it, let's see you might be able to
- 30:16Speaker 2: hear this. The box slightly opens and a little finger
- 30:20Speaker 2: comes out and pushes your finger away. I want to
- 30:24Speaker 2: do this for the rest of my life.
- 30:25Speaker 3: It's so quick, Yes, it is fright, and it's a
- 30:31Speaker 3: little more delicate than you would imagine.
- 30:33Speaker 2: So we're like on our third Oh do they fall
- 30:36Speaker 2: apart pretty quickly? Just you know, treat it well. It's
- 30:40Speaker 2: a whole I mean, it's a device.
- 30:42Speaker 3: It's a whole device for no reason, just to be
- 30:45Speaker 3: I don't know, just to tell you to mind your biz.
- 30:48Speaker 2: This is a funny invention because it's the sort of
- 30:50Speaker 2: thing that like, conceptually no box exists like this that
- 30:54Speaker 2: you would be like, oh, yeah, there's the little thing.
- 30:56Speaker 2: I know, I'll push this and get what's inside. It's
- 30:59Speaker 2: like the trick is unlike anything you've experienced before, and
- 31:02Speaker 2: it's quick.
- 31:03Speaker 3: It's so much faster than you would It doesn't even.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Give you time. No, you kind of don't even understand
- 31:08Speaker 2: what's happening while you're not even in on the joke.
- 31:11Speaker 2: You're the joke. But then once you're now I'm in
- 31:13Speaker 2: a relationship. Yeah, I want to do this all the time. Yes,
- 31:18Speaker 2: I wonder how that even works. I guess this is
- 31:21Speaker 2: it's almost in the same category as the what is
- 31:25Speaker 2: that the perpetual motion bird thing that like drink going
- 31:29Speaker 2: to drink? Yes, yeah, I like I don't I really,
- 31:32Speaker 2: I guess I would classify this as a gag.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Yes, a prank, and a curiosity on your table.
- 31:40Speaker 2: It's an oddity, a curiosity.
- 31:42Speaker 3: To confound and delight and annoy.
- 31:44Speaker 2: Yes, something you would buy out of a wagon something
- 31:47Speaker 2: like that, right, or at the old general's store. Yes,
- 31:51Speaker 2: where How where did your husband find that?
- 31:53Speaker 3: He finds like he's sort of in charge of sort
- 31:55Speaker 3: of like the art in our home, like he will
- 31:58Speaker 3: find really cool. I don't know. Short answer, like it
- 32:01Speaker 3: just arrived and he's like, oh, this is kind of
- 32:04Speaker 3: horror movie. Yes, we had to make a deal, and
- 32:07Speaker 3: you're going to have to make a deal with the
- 32:09Speaker 3: devil to keep this.
- 32:10Speaker 2: Keep doing it, don't stop.
- 32:13Speaker 3: I think what he does is he does gofundmes, you
- 32:15Speaker 3: know where it's like, so then a lot of things
- 32:19Speaker 3: appear where he's like, I just respect this.
- 32:21Speaker 2: And do you think this was a gofund me? I
- 32:23Speaker 2: love the idea of this Kickstarter campaign. Yes, finally everyone's
- 32:28Speaker 2: been asking for a box that won't let you open it.
- 32:31Speaker 2: We figured it out.
- 32:32Speaker 3: We figured it out. We can make it to the
- 32:34Speaker 3: four million dollar goal again, our kid really start working.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Now.
- 32:41Speaker 2: I just love this thing. I don't I uh, it's
- 32:45Speaker 2: almost like something that Grandpa would have or uncle. Yeah,
- 32:48Speaker 2: give that a but no one's partner. And now I
- 32:52Speaker 2: kind of am desperate to know what's going on inside
- 32:55Speaker 2: and I'll never know.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Well you could. I think there's a little you see,
- 32:58Speaker 3: the little like classes you can open that you can open.
- 33:01Speaker 2: But again, I ruin it for I don't know if
- 33:03Speaker 2: I should ruin it for life.
- 33:04Speaker 3: Maybe keep it have one mystery.
- 33:06Speaker 2: It's its own little magician and it shouldn't give away
- 33:09Speaker 2: its secrets. Yeah, so what are there other things in
- 33:11Speaker 2: your house like this? Um?
- 33:14Speaker 3: Let me think think think. Uh No, I'm trying to
- 33:18Speaker 3: think if there's anything as funny as that, But I
- 33:21Speaker 3: don't think so, but I do. I'm sort of like
- 33:24Speaker 3: the person that shows up with a crystal or two.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Oh sure, sure.
- 33:28Speaker 3: So I'll do a thing where like we have, you know,
- 33:30Speaker 3: like just a bowl of artistic moss and rocks or whatever,
- 33:34Speaker 3: and then I found a little Lego Drothy and a
- 33:37Speaker 3: little Lego Toto and I'll like So there's little bits
- 33:40Speaker 3: of whimsy that I try.
- 33:42Speaker 2: So do you take Do you buy crystals? Often?
- 33:46Speaker 3: A little bit sometimes I I don't know why, but
- 33:51Speaker 3: like they're pretty and right.
- 33:53Speaker 2: I mean I think that's enough enough. And if they
- 33:57Speaker 2: happen to have some sort of that's.
- 34:00Speaker 3: It where I'm not going to delve too deeply.
- 34:03Speaker 2: But it can't hurt with Yeah, unless it's cursed, unless
- 34:08Speaker 2: it's an evil crystal. Oh I don't buy evil crystals.
- 34:11Speaker 2: Well you think you don't buy it? Oh no, it
- 34:14Speaker 2: depends on if you're tricked or not. It's not rich
- 34:16Speaker 2: which you buy them from.
- 34:18Speaker 3: Oh yeah, shoot, that's that's where I mess up.
- 34:22Speaker 2: This sounds like something that could have some sort of
- 34:24Speaker 2: evil property.
- 34:25Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. This is like one of those movies where
- 34:27Speaker 3: it's like right psychological torture. Yeah, I promise you it's
- 34:35Speaker 3: just a little finger that keeps shutting.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Up, but I just want to keep doing it. Kind
- 34:39Speaker 2: of feels like it's almost like this podcast turned into
- 34:41Speaker 2: a box or something.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe that's why I made the connection. I'm like,
- 34:45Speaker 3: I have the perfect thing. No, it's just I've heard
- 34:48Speaker 3: other people's gifts and I'm like, oh gosh, darn it.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Like that, I gotta step up. I know this is
- 34:54Speaker 2: absolutely top five gifts. It's such a fun it's a
- 34:58Speaker 2: I've never heard of something like this, never experienced something
- 35:01Speaker 2: like this.
- 35:01Speaker 3: I have a feeling that the person who makes this
- 35:04Speaker 3: it is gonna have a lot of business once you
- 35:05Speaker 3: put that on.
- 35:05Speaker 2: The Instagram right to right they're going to it'll probably
- 35:09Speaker 2: ruin their life because suddenly they're gonna blow up and
- 35:11Speaker 2: they're gonna be making too many of these boxes.
- 35:14Speaker 3: I just leave more destruction in my weight, just like
- 35:16Speaker 3: Dead Butterfly, Like bye bye guys.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Uh, not to go back to crystals, but I feel
- 35:22Speaker 2: like doing it anyway. Okay, I don't know that much
- 35:25Speaker 2: about crystals. When you go do you just go to
- 35:27Speaker 2: a crystal shop? Do you just see them at random places?
- 35:31Speaker 3: There's a place, you know in of the Seventh Ray,
- 35:35Speaker 3: do you know that it's so pretty. It's up on
- 35:37Speaker 3: the Pega can. Yes, Yes, it's beautiful pretty. Yes, it's
- 35:42Speaker 3: like there's a little brook and it's outdoors and there's
- 35:44Speaker 3: fairy lights and all that stuff. And then they've got
- 35:46Speaker 3: this little store and it's perfect. It's a perfect tourist
- 35:49Speaker 3: trap because I don't normally like walk into a crystal store. Right,
- 35:55Speaker 3: you're on a night out and you're feeling magical anyway, Yes,
- 35:58Speaker 3: and it's that's where I have the majority, that's where
- 36:03Speaker 3: I get them.
- 36:03Speaker 2: That feels like the best place to get them.
- 36:05Speaker 3: Yes, yes, because you do feel magical already.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Right, it's like almost like a tree house or like
- 36:10Speaker 2: a somewhere over an elf would live or something that's
- 36:13Speaker 2: fairy lights.
- 36:14Speaker 3: Man, that's all I need, is all I want. And
- 36:16Speaker 3: I'm you know, I'm like.
- 36:18Speaker 2: I'm magical. Oh this is talking to me. Do have
- 36:23Speaker 2: you eaten there? Yes, I've never. I've just been to visit. Oh, okay,
- 36:27Speaker 2: what sort of food are they serving at the end
- 36:29Speaker 2: of the secon?
- 36:30Speaker 3: I think kind of Americana and then you could get
- 36:32Speaker 3: your you get sort of anything there. But if you're vegan,
- 36:35Speaker 3: you can be happy there, you know. I think the
- 36:38Speaker 3: last time. They've got a really nice like polenta. Oh interesting,
- 36:42Speaker 3: but a good steak. Yeah, nice, nice wine.
- 36:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 36:45Speaker 2: It feels kind of Laurel Canyon, New Age. Nice place.
- 36:50Speaker 3: Absolutely, you're in the Topanga Canyon. You know, like there's
- 36:55Speaker 3: you know that there's a big there's just art everywhere,
- 36:59Speaker 3: like a pig lying on a huge spike. When nearby
- 37:03Speaker 3: the Arboretum like the will.
- 37:04Speaker 2: Gear Wait, I'm not familiar with this.
- 37:06Speaker 3: Oh botanic and pardon me not the arboretom. It's the
- 37:08Speaker 3: will Have you heard of the will Gear Theater? Oh
- 37:10Speaker 3: my god, you gotta go. Will Gear. I guess played
- 37:14Speaker 3: grandpa on The Waltons. But he loved Shakespeare and he
- 37:17Speaker 3: and his family we're talking now probably his great grandchildren
- 37:21Speaker 3: run it. And they do Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheater. Oh,
- 37:26Speaker 3: and it's beautiful and you show up and you bring
- 37:28Speaker 3: a picnic and you bring whatever you want.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Oh, that sounds so nice.
- 37:31Speaker 3: And it's very near end of the seventh ra so
- 37:33Speaker 3: I'm not changing topics. But it's lovely and they have
- 37:37Speaker 3: classes for kids and stuff, and they perform like you know,
- 37:40Speaker 3: a mid summer night's dream. But you're in the woods
- 37:42Speaker 3: and right absolutely stunning.
- 37:43Speaker 2: Oh that sounds really lovely, really nice. Have you ever
- 37:46Speaker 2: done live theater?
- 37:47Speaker 3: Yeah? I all right, Well I went to I did
- 37:50Speaker 3: it all throughout, like elementary school up and then in college,
- 37:54Speaker 3: and then I went to acting school for two years.
- 37:56Speaker 3: And then I was broke in New York City. And
- 38:00Speaker 3: then because I was like catering so much to just
- 38:03Speaker 3: pay the bills and stuff, I started to stand up.
- 38:06Speaker 3: My friend dared me to do some stand up and
- 38:10Speaker 3: that was a game changer because I'm like, oh my god,
- 38:12Speaker 3: like I don't have to.
- 38:14Speaker 2: Rehearse, like rehearse with a bunch of people and rent
- 38:16Speaker 2: the theater. I can control this. I can control this.
- 38:19Speaker 3: And it's at the time, it was like and it
- 38:20Speaker 3: was six minutes and I was just I ran into
- 38:22Speaker 3: someone last night actually who saw me do my first
- 38:25Speaker 3: like act, And I had a jingle bell earring that
- 38:28Speaker 3: I would ring to do the what do you call it?
- 38:33Speaker 3: Changing the topic basically segways my segway belt. So I'd
- 38:37Speaker 3: be like, oh, that was my first joke because I
- 38:41Speaker 3: was so new and I didn't know what I was doing,
- 38:43Speaker 3: and it was so funny to like this was ninety
- 38:45Speaker 3: six or something and so I was like, oh my.
- 38:47Speaker 2: God, that's right, what a gimmick.
- 38:49Speaker 3: Yeah, And but then things well whatever, things started moving
- 38:52Speaker 3: before they stopped for a long time. But my now
- 38:55Speaker 3: manager saw me and said, if you want a manager,
- 38:59Speaker 3: come to LA and like, oh god, yes.
- 39:01Speaker 2: Don't forget the jingle bell. Don't forget the jingle bell
- 39:03Speaker 2: or the jingle bell. Comic got your talent, right, the
- 39:06Speaker 2: jingle bell? Have you got the bell?
- 39:09Speaker 3: Can we get a headshot of the bell?
- 39:13Speaker 2: Do you still have the jingle bell? No?
- 39:14Speaker 3: I don't think. Well maybe maybe I saved it, Like
- 39:17Speaker 3: I've got like little boxes of like this is precious
- 39:20Speaker 3: to me, and I'm sure it's somewhere there. It was
- 39:22Speaker 3: a little Christmas ear ring, so it was like a
- 39:25Speaker 3: hook with a bell and a little tiny, tiny read bell.
- 39:28Speaker 2: Mean, someday you're going to be cleaning out a back
- 39:32Speaker 2: room or a basement or something. You'll hear the jingling.
- 39:35Speaker 2: You'll be sobbing. No one will be able to get
- 39:39Speaker 2: you out of this absolute melt.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Right, it'll be like Grammar, stop crying.
- 39:47Speaker 2: Do you remember what your first play was in elementary school?
- 39:50Speaker 1: Oh?
- 39:50Speaker 3: Golly, okay, yes, I believe that that was Okay, I
- 39:54Speaker 3: was a bee, and it was like I was the bee.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I was the bee in the motel. Don't you remember
- 40:04Speaker 3: Willie Loman, that's a prostitute. And then I fly away.
- 40:09Speaker 3: Your son's crying. It was it was like it was
- 40:15Speaker 3: like a celebration of spring. And I remember just being Oh,
- 40:20Speaker 3: I rate that. I had to memorize lines. And by
- 40:22Speaker 3: the way, the lines was like a strip of paper
- 40:24Speaker 3: with a little you know, I come outs, get on
- 40:29Speaker 3: exit stage right. Yeah, so that was my first theatrical rule.
- 40:34Speaker 2: That's adorable. That's pretty cute. It's kind of like the
- 40:36Speaker 2: uh what music video of blind Melon video picturing that. Yeah,
- 40:42Speaker 2: so you're like the second most famous B Yeah.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Well there's two B movies.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Oh right, right, so but at the time, you were
- 40:51Speaker 2: probably the most famous bee.
- 40:53Speaker 3: In Stony Point, New York. Yeah.
- 40:54Speaker 2: Sure, of course. Nobody else had done the bee.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Yet, no I had done it. It was me set
- 40:59Speaker 3: the stage for other Yeah, no one, No one gives
- 41:02Speaker 3: me any credit. Thank you for this, of course.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Of course that's why you came here today. Look at
- 41:07Speaker 2: this little scene I've set up here. The birds surrounding
- 41:11Speaker 2: reminded what this is called.
- 41:12Speaker 3: The useless box.
- 41:13Speaker 2: Useless box.
- 41:14Speaker 3: Yeah, and you got your so you've got some friends.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Look at that.
- 41:19Speaker 3: It's very silly.
- 41:21Speaker 2: I really like that. Are you into like magic or
- 41:24Speaker 2: any of these things? Do you like going to magic shows?
- 41:27Speaker 3: I love going to the I know I have a
- 41:31Speaker 3: friend of mine. He was in the Growlings for a
- 41:33Speaker 3: while and he is a great magician. Oh gosh, of
- 41:37Speaker 3: course now I'm gosh darn it. I will remember his
- 41:40Speaker 3: name in a second. But he got us, my husband
- 41:43Speaker 3: and I tickets to see I love it. It's great
- 41:48Speaker 3: at the Magic Castle, at the Magic cast. Thanks for
- 41:50Speaker 3: finishing my thoughts, I trailed off.
- 41:52Speaker 2: What sort of magic did he do? Just stay?
- 41:55Speaker 3: He does kind of close up?
- 41:57Speaker 2: Okay, he's great.
- 41:58Speaker 3: And then his partner, she's a mentalist. Oh and she
- 42:03Speaker 3: that was incredible too. She would guess what people were thinking.
- 42:08Speaker 3: I don't know how they do it. How do either
- 42:12Speaker 3: of them do it?
- 42:13Speaker 2: Did you go on stage and get your thoughts?
- 42:17Speaker 3: I was just part of an audience, but watching her
- 42:21Speaker 3: deal with the audience. And his name, Oh my god,
- 42:23Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to write to you and tell you
- 42:25Speaker 3: his name. Harrison Lambert.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Oh, Harrison Lambert, magician name right?
- 42:31Speaker 3: And his partner is Christa. I believe anyway. Harrison Lambert,
- 42:37Speaker 3: he actually did one of the progressive commercials. Oh no,
- 42:40Speaker 3: he was someone who came up in a karaoke bar
- 42:43Speaker 3: and was But he brings a deck of cards wherever
- 42:46Speaker 3: he works, and like, if you're in between, he'll do
- 42:48Speaker 3: a card trick.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Oh what a nice thing to be able to do.
- 42:51Speaker 3: And but he does it well, so it's.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Not like annoyed by someone's like first time magic trick.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Oh the cards I spilled up on the No, he's
- 43:02Speaker 3: a master, and you're like.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Wow, And I'm so curious about this mentalist thing. I
- 43:06Speaker 2: guess they're just so there's a whole field that you
- 43:09Speaker 2: learn about figuring out how to guess what people are
- 43:12Speaker 2: I know, and leading them into telling you information that
- 43:15Speaker 2: you're able to then build.
- 43:16Speaker 3: That must be maybe there's physical cues. I mean she's
- 43:19Speaker 3: not telling. I'm not asking because it's like a lot
- 43:21Speaker 3: of fun.
- 43:21Speaker 2: It's fun to be mystified fun. She might be just magic.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Maybe she's magical.
- 43:26Speaker 2: Were we how frustrating it would be for her to
- 43:29Speaker 2: be like, no, it's not a trick. I just am
- 43:32Speaker 2: able to tap into another dimensional someone, Please believe.
- 43:37Speaker 3: No, I've stood next to crystals. I'm not magic, so
- 43:40Speaker 3: you can't be.
- 43:42Speaker 2: Oh my god, I've stood next to crystals. Resume special skills.
- 43:50Speaker 3: I've stood next to crystals, really and what happened? Nothing? Nothing.
- 43:56Speaker 3: I chose them for the color in the room.
- 43:58Speaker 2: Oh, I need to get into crystals.
- 44:01Speaker 3: I don't know. They feel good in the hand. I
- 44:02Speaker 3: know I love just like rolling them around, and a
- 44:05Speaker 3: geode is kind of magical.
- 44:06Speaker 2: Yeah, they're very pretty. Yeah, they kind of do nothing
- 44:09Speaker 2: beyond that. But maybe there's some sort of placebo effect.
- 44:13Speaker 3: Yes there maybe crystal festivals people go to. I'm going
- 44:17Speaker 3: to out her, but Wenny mcclennan Covey, that's a crystal.
- 44:20Speaker 2: Oh, she's a big crystal gal.
- 44:21Speaker 3: He's a crystal gal.
- 44:23Speaker 2: M hmm.
- 44:24Speaker 3: She she has a collection, Wendy Wendy Parts two.
- 44:32Speaker 2: We need explain. So she has a big collection.
- 44:37Speaker 3: I have not seen it, but I know that she
- 44:40Speaker 3: loves them. Okay, but uh, yeah, I think I'm just
- 44:44Speaker 3: a sucker for like, what a pretty color? Even just
- 44:46Speaker 3: looking at these little colorful.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'm very much a child in that way.
- 44:50Speaker 3: Yeah, And I feel like we're kind of, I don't know,
- 44:53Speaker 3: we're influenced by pretty things. Well, Wendy, Well, Weny, figure
- 44:59Speaker 3: that you have splained interview.
- 45:03Speaker 2: Well, is there anything left to say about the box?
- 45:05Speaker 3: No, man, enjoy it justin.
- 45:07Speaker 2: I just love this thing.
- 45:09Speaker 3: It is very fun.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Well, I think we should play a game. Okay, We're
- 45:15Speaker 2: going to play a game called Gift to a Curse.
- 45:16Speaker 2: But I need a number between one and ten from you. Seven. Okay.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I have to do some light calculating to get our
- 45:22Speaker 2: game pieces. So right now you can recommend, promote, do
- 45:25Speaker 2: whatever you want with the microphone. I'll be right back.
- 45:27Speaker 3: Okay. Oh he just disappeared in a Bridger shaped puff
- 45:30Speaker 3: of smoke.
- 45:31Speaker 2: I can still hear. Hello. My name is Stephany Courtney.
- 45:35Speaker 3: And I'm a gen X the Quaires. I would love
- 45:41Speaker 3: to plug a show that I do every week. I
- 45:43Speaker 3: do a show Wednesdays at the Grownlings Theater in Los
- 45:46Speaker 3: Angeles and it's called the Crazy Uncle Joe Show. And
- 45:50Speaker 3: it's me and I five friends or my five friends,
- 45:53Speaker 3: and I I feel like my mom's standing right behind
- 45:55Speaker 3: me correcting my English. And we do we invite a
- 45:59Speaker 3: couple of guests so long, and we do a long
- 46:02Speaker 3: form show and it's an improv show and it's so
- 46:04Speaker 3: fun and it moves quickly. It's an hour and a
- 46:06Speaker 3: half top to bottom, and we hope to see you there.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Gorgeous, everybody, go see Stephanie's show. That sounds like so
- 46:13Speaker 2: much fun.
- 46:15Speaker 3: Just watch the crystals. They're scattered all over the audience.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Just watch your eyes. Wear glass.
- 46:22Speaker 2: They're just throwing crystals. People.
- 46:23Speaker 3: We have to stop doing that, but we won't.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Too many people have been hospitalized. When will it not
- 46:30Speaker 2: be enough for you? Sorry? Okay, let's see. This is
- 46:34Speaker 2: how we play gift to a curse. I'm going to
- 46:36Speaker 2: name three things. You'll tell me if there are a
- 46:37Speaker 2: gift or a curse, and why I don't tell you
- 46:39Speaker 2: if you're right or wrong, because there are correct answers.
- 46:42Speaker 2: You can walk away a big winner or a total loser,
- 46:45Speaker 2: so be careful, or something in between, which is also
- 46:49Speaker 2: a total loser. These are all from our Patreon listeners today.
- 46:52Speaker 2: This first one is from a listener named Anna. Gift
- 46:55Speaker 2: or a curse. When a landscaper drives their lawnmower down
- 46:58Speaker 2: the center of the street, that's a curse.
- 47:01Speaker 3: I feel that's a curse because we are so on
- 47:05Speaker 3: autopilot when it comes to driving that any aberration can
- 47:12Speaker 3: just throw you off like a lot more than what
- 47:14Speaker 3: the situation calls for.
- 47:15Speaker 2: But if you're like I didn't expect.
- 47:17Speaker 3: And then just a slight turnoment wheel, it could be
- 47:20Speaker 3: a disaster. So I say it's a curse.
- 47:22Speaker 2: Wrong, This is a gift. Oh. I love to see
- 47:27Speaker 2: somebody driving a lawn mower down the street. I think
- 47:29Speaker 2: that they's what a power that they take. Suddenly they're
- 47:32Speaker 2: the king of the road. Nobody They get to call
- 47:34Speaker 2: every shot from here on out because they are on
- 47:37Speaker 2: the vehicle that nobody else is on. They also have
- 47:40Speaker 2: a weapon attached to their vehicle, and they're having the
- 47:43Speaker 2: time of their life. You know, they're they're proving that
- 47:46Speaker 2: these machines don't just have to be on the grass.
- 47:48Speaker 3: They must they must feel very powerful.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Imagine the power. Yeah, I'm essentially a throne.
- 47:54Speaker 3: Yeah, slow thrown with a weapon in the front.
- 47:58Speaker 2: Yeah. And also reminds me of the David Lynch movie
- 48:02Speaker 2: What Was That where he drives the lawnmower across the
- 48:04Speaker 2: United States.
- 48:04Speaker 3: It's his brother, A very long tail, a very short tail,
- 48:08Speaker 3: a very love.
- 48:09Speaker 2: It's weirdly, it's a weird David Lynch movie. For how
- 48:12Speaker 2: sweet it is. It is David Lynch lawnmower. A straight story,
- 48:16Speaker 2: A straight story. And is that guy the dad from
- 48:21Speaker 2: Anne of green Gables.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Oh my god, the one who played Matthew Cuthbert on
- 48:25Speaker 3: the Anna green Gables.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Wrong, Uncle Matthew, let's see here. I might be wrong. No,
- 48:31Speaker 2: I don't think it is. Who's that guy?
- 48:34Speaker 1: It is?
- 48:35Speaker 2: It is? Oh my goodness, Matthew.
- 48:39Speaker 3: I told you I'm in charge of raising the child.
- 48:42Speaker 3: Keep your or out. Oh my god, I'm the woman
- 48:49Speaker 3: I am today because of Anna green Gables. Oh I
- 48:53Speaker 3: love it.
- 48:54Speaker 2: I need to go back and rewatch that I didn't
- 48:57Speaker 2: see the new version. I didn't either. I don't. I
- 48:59Speaker 2: don't need that tarnishing my memory. Is a band of
- 49:01Speaker 2: green game. Megan follows Yes and lastic series. Oh my god,
- 49:06Speaker 2: I don't know that I saw all of it, because
- 49:07Speaker 2: you know, it keeps becoming Anne of you know, advantually
- 49:10Speaker 2: becomes like Anne of Burbank or something. But the huge
- 49:16Speaker 2: chunk that I saw wonderful, amazing.
- 49:18Speaker 3: You know Anna Burbank. She works in the TJ Max
- 49:22Speaker 3: at the Empire Center. It's crazy. It went too far.
- 49:27Speaker 3: It went too long.
- 49:28Speaker 2: They went she lived too long. She's one hundred and
- 49:32Speaker 2: fifty years old. She's working at teaching.
- 49:35Speaker 3: What did I?
- 49:38Speaker 2: Uh, No, you're wrong. It's a gift. We get to
- 49:42Speaker 2: imagine the grandpa or the I guess, wait, what are
- 49:45Speaker 2: they in Ann of Green Gables.
- 49:46Speaker 3: He's the adopted Yes, but he's very old.
- 49:50Speaker 2: Yes, so can you be in the adoptive grandfather? I
- 49:54Speaker 2: think at that point you just just get to skip.
- 49:57Speaker 2: You just get to say I'm not your dad, I'm
- 49:58Speaker 2: your grandpa. He just she would.
- 50:00Speaker 3: Blather on, and then he'd just smile.
- 50:03Speaker 1: A heart.
- 50:04Speaker 2: It just broke your heart. Such a sweetie. Well, you've
- 50:07Speaker 2: gotten one wrong so far. Let's see what happens next. Alright,
- 50:13Speaker 2: this is from Luna. Gift You're a curse dessert in
- 50:16Speaker 2: a jar.
- 50:18Speaker 3: Oh. I find myself charmed by it. I think it's
- 50:22Speaker 3: a gift because then you can if you don't finish it,
- 50:26Speaker 3: you can always reseal it and then use the jar.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I think it's a gift. I think you win twice
- 50:31Speaker 3: three times because you eat it.
- 50:33Speaker 2: Correct. That's a good.
- 50:34Speaker 3: Oh my god, I'm still alive.
- 50:38Speaker 2: No, I love it. I think it's nice. I think
- 50:39Speaker 2: there's nothing wrong with this. It's a nice little container
- 50:42Speaker 2: with a reusable thing that later can be used for dessert, drink, jam,
- 50:48Speaker 2: capturing bugs. Probably a fifth thing you use your imagination,
- 50:54Speaker 2: you can think of anytime you use your imagination, you
- 50:56Speaker 2: can think of a fifth thing.
- 50:58Speaker 3: So imagination is to give.
- 51:01Speaker 2: So I think this is very nice. It's usually kind
- 51:03Speaker 2: of a good dessert. You don't usually you don't have
- 51:05Speaker 2: the boring desserts in a jar.
- 51:06Speaker 3: You know what is the kind of a dessert in
- 51:08Speaker 3: a jar? Layered layers, Yes, some layers, textures, Oh, just
- 51:12Speaker 3: a surprise.
- 51:13Speaker 2: Yes, at least one of those will be whipped cream. Problems.
- 51:16Speaker 2: No notes, Yeah, no notes at all. That's an absolute gift.
- 51:19Speaker 2: I can't imagine that being a problem for anybody. And
- 51:22Speaker 2: if it is, just take a look in the mirror.
- 51:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:25Speaker 2: Finally, this is from a listener named Joseph. Gift or
- 51:28Speaker 2: a curse when you buy a new pair of shoelaces
- 51:30Speaker 2: for an old pair of shoes.
- 51:33Speaker 3: Oh, that's I have a lot of emotions coming up
- 51:37Speaker 3: with that. I think it's a gift. I'm gonna say
- 51:40Speaker 3: it's a gift because you're you're giving a gift to
- 51:43Speaker 3: the planet by not like throwing away shoes you're having
- 51:46Speaker 3: them live longer. I think you're you're you've jazzed up
- 51:50Speaker 3: your shoe and I think once shoelaces like break or fray.
- 51:56Speaker 3: That's depressing, that's just depressing. You feel like, I'm not
- 51:59Speaker 3: gonna say you do you writer, I'm gonna say I
- 52:02Speaker 3: feel like I'm I'm not operating.
- 52:04Speaker 2: At a high level.
- 52:06Speaker 3: Like my shoelaces frayed and dirty and gross.
- 52:10Speaker 2: I think it's a gift. I'm gonna do it wrong.
- 52:13Speaker 3: I'm dead.
- 52:14Speaker 2: Oh no, this is for me. This is an absolute curse.
- 52:17Speaker 2: I've I've tried it over and over, always thinking this
- 52:19Speaker 2: is giving the shoes new life. No, it just becomes
- 52:22Speaker 2: an uncanny situation where you're looking at your shoes. You're thinking, well,
- 52:25Speaker 2: they still look terrible, but now the shoelaces looks new,
- 52:29Speaker 2: and it's distracting, and everybody can tell I'm a fraud.
- 52:33Speaker 2: It has done nothing but make the shoe look worse.
- 52:36Speaker 2: At some point you have to say goodbye shoes.
- 52:38Speaker 3: Okay, okay, I'll take my loss with grace.
- 52:42Speaker 2: You've got one out of threat brother, pretty bad job today.
- 52:46Speaker 2: That's tough, tough pill to swallow, but Ellis has their
- 52:50Speaker 2: own gift or a curse, and now they're going to
- 52:52Speaker 2: present us with it and we'll both have to speak
- 52:54Speaker 2: to Okay, ellis what are we talking about today?
- 52:57Speaker 4: Gift or a curse? Grocery store suit?
- 53:00Speaker 1: She h.
- 53:02Speaker 3: I never like it, and I'm gonna tell you why.
- 53:05Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you why because it's sushi shouldn't
- 53:10Speaker 3: be refrigerated. You know what I'm saying interesting that rice
- 53:13Speaker 3: should not be cold and chucky, which is once if
- 53:19Speaker 3: you have like leftover sushi and stuff. I'm just like
- 53:22Speaker 3: roll the insides. I just can't abide.
- 53:25Speaker 2: A cold, stiff, chalky rice. I can't.
- 53:28Speaker 3: I can only say that like Harrison, like a Harrison Ford.
- 53:32Speaker 4: Are cold chockery rice.
- 53:35Speaker 2: I don't kill my wife, but chalky rice the fugitive too.
- 53:40Speaker 2: It's just all about getting bad grocery store sushi. I'm
- 53:46Speaker 2: a doctor. Uh No, I'm on the same page. I
- 53:49Speaker 2: think this is a curse. I h. I think that
- 53:51Speaker 2: sushi has its place, and I think sushi should always
- 53:54Speaker 2: be kind of an occasion, even if it's like you know,
- 53:57Speaker 2: you go to a cheap, affordable sushi, it should just
- 54:00Speaker 2: be it should have been just made. I don't like
- 54:03Speaker 2: the idea of that gumminess that happens when rice gets cold.
- 54:08Speaker 2: God knows how long it's actually been in there. I
- 54:11Speaker 2: don't think it's often that cheap enough to even justify it.
- 54:14Speaker 2: You know. It's like, well, if I'm going to get sushi,
- 54:16Speaker 2: all spend a little bit extra and just go to
- 54:17Speaker 2: a restaurant where they're going to make it for me.
- 54:19Speaker 2: I agree.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I feel there has to be some measure of respect
- 54:22Speaker 3: for the art of it.
- 54:24Speaker 2: Right, I don't know, you know, there are certain things
- 54:27Speaker 2: I just don't want refrigerated served in a plastic dish. Yeah,
- 54:32Speaker 2: there's something that I'm going to be gagging, And there's.
- 54:35Speaker 3: A lot of I feel like once you get the
- 54:38Speaker 3: rubber band and the plastic in the thing, the little
- 54:41Speaker 3: plastic separators, you're just like it's like having a party
- 54:44Speaker 3: for yourself that no one showed up. Like I feel,
- 54:47Speaker 3: there's like there's been effort made, but why.
- 54:50Speaker 2: It's just me right, just pick something else in the
- 54:52Speaker 2: refrigerated section, something you can microwave. Yeah, I agree, ellis No,
- 54:58Speaker 2: it's a gift.
- 55:01Speaker 4: The amount of times that I've been in the store
- 55:04Speaker 4: tempted to buy something quick and easy and unhealthy for me. Now,
- 55:08Speaker 4: I'm not saying that the grocery store sushi is good.
- 55:11Speaker 4: I'm not saying it, But that's not the question. The
- 55:12Speaker 4: question is if it helps you in some way?
- 55:15Speaker 2: Is it a gift?
- 55:16Speaker 4: Yeah, because I've like eaten that instead of something that's
- 55:18Speaker 4: way worse for me. Yes, and it's helped me out
- 55:21Speaker 4: of those situations. And as a child, it was my
- 55:23Speaker 4: first exposure to sushi.
- 55:25Speaker 2: And it was kind of like terrible exposure.
- 55:28Speaker 1: Mmm.
- 55:28Speaker 4: I mean, say what you want about that, but like
- 55:30Speaker 4: I it did help me introduce It introduced me to
- 55:33Speaker 4: a whole new world that opened up my world to
- 55:35Speaker 4: better sushi. So you know, there you go.
- 55:38Speaker 3: When you had better sushi, did you feel like I'm
- 55:40Speaker 3: eating something different, like completely different than.
- 55:43Speaker 4: Oh yeah, but like a in a good way. It
- 55:45Speaker 4: was like, oh wow, this is even better than I
- 55:48Speaker 4: could have ever imagined. But I already enjoyed the taste
- 55:51Speaker 4: of the grocery store sushi enough that it was like
- 55:53Speaker 4: a treat, Like good sushi, real sushi was the treat.
- 55:56Speaker 3: Well, I feel like I died and was revived and
- 55:58Speaker 3: died again.
- 55:59Speaker 2: Well, will you do me a favor?
- 56:02Speaker 4: Maybe?
- 56:03Speaker 2: Will you just edit out everything you said? How you do.
- 56:07Speaker 2: It's a kindness you'll find out. Okay, well, we uh
- 56:13Speaker 2: walked away losers in Ellis's sick game. But that's fine.
- 56:17Speaker 2: Let's we hope me answer a question. Sure people are
- 56:20Speaker 2: writing into I said no gifts at gmail dot com
- 56:22Speaker 2: or sending voice notes that have to be sixty seconds
- 56:25Speaker 2: or shorter and decent audio if we all know what
- 56:29Speaker 2: decent audio sounds like at this point, let's read one today. Though.
- 56:33Speaker 2: Let me get into the dock here, let's see. Okay, okay,
- 56:38Speaker 2: this is dearest Bridger, an esteemed guest. That's very nice.
- 56:42Speaker 2: I'm desperately seeking assistance as my neighbor's dog. And let
- 56:45Speaker 2: me just note here neighbor with a U. So we
- 56:49Speaker 2: don't know where this person is or if they're just
- 56:51Speaker 2: trying to be fancy in the United I tell you that, yeah,
- 56:54Speaker 2: we do not like this person's I'm desperately seeking assistance
- 56:59Speaker 2: as my neighbor's dog is constantly getting out and running
- 57:03Speaker 2: a muck in the neighborhood without a caller or id.
- 57:06Speaker 2: Our neighbors have three kids and one dog. It's clear
- 57:09Speaker 2: that they have their hands full, but their dog somehow
- 57:11Speaker 2: escapes at least once a week, and they don't seem
- 57:14Speaker 2: to make any attempt to stop him. I spend a
- 57:17Speaker 2: lot of time at home, so I'm typically the dog's rescuer,
- 57:20Speaker 2: But I have a one year old baby and a
- 57:22Speaker 2: dog of my own to care for and can't constantly
- 57:24Speaker 2: be on neighborhood dog watch. Just this afternoon, I lured
- 57:29Speaker 2: their dog to me because he was running through our
- 57:31Speaker 2: street and was approached by a car full of these
- 57:33Speaker 2: sweet people who said they'd been looking for him after
- 57:36Speaker 2: seeing him running through the neighborhood. This is the fifth
- 57:39Speaker 2: neighborhood with the U. Okay. Normally i'd force myself to
- 57:43Speaker 2: confront the owner and tell them to do something about
- 57:45Speaker 2: the situation, but I believe they're moving out soon. Oh
- 57:48Speaker 2: and obviously I hate confrontation of any kind. My question finally,
- 57:53Speaker 2: would it be totally deranged for me to buy a
- 57:56Speaker 2: caller and ID tag with the dog's name and address
- 57:58Speaker 2: and affix it to him the next time he gets out?
- 58:01Speaker 2: Bless you for reading? Yes, bless me. That's from Sarah. Okay, okay, Sarah,
- 58:08Speaker 2: neighborhood with the you. The dog is all over the place,
- 58:12Speaker 2: it's bothering her. She's very nosy, she can't mind her
- 58:16Speaker 2: own business. She's looking out and just looking for neighborhood
- 58:19Speaker 2: business to get her fingers in. What is she supposed
- 58:23Speaker 2: to do in this situation?
- 58:25Speaker 3: Okay, I'm very concerned for this dog getting hit by
- 58:29Speaker 3: a car. It's driving me nuts. So number one, I
- 58:34Speaker 3: think that's very generous of Sarah to offer to get
- 58:37Speaker 3: the ID tag and the collar. I wonder if because
- 58:44Speaker 3: I know, like, if you show up to a neighbor
- 58:46Speaker 3: with just a complaint and notes, that can be just
- 58:50Speaker 3: fall on deaf.
- 58:51Speaker 2: Ear right, just giving them a chore.
- 58:53Speaker 3: But if you give them a solution, that's a different thing.
- 58:55Speaker 3: So I wonder if there's like, is there a fence opportunity,
- 59:00Speaker 3: is there a electronic fence opportunity? Is there a microchip situation?
- 59:07Speaker 3: Or that sweet family full of people in the cart?
- 59:10Speaker 3: Can you say, are you overwhelmed with this dog? Because
- 59:13Speaker 3: there might be people that want the dog?
- 59:15Speaker 2: Oh? Interesting, So I.
- 59:17Speaker 3: Have like the three kind of solutions, but.
- 59:19Speaker 2: Right it's a tricky one. I mean, I something I'm
- 59:22Speaker 2: seeing here is that this person hates confrontation, but these
- 59:26Speaker 2: people are moving, so maybe this is a good opportunity
- 59:28Speaker 2: to try confronting someone where the stakes are pretty low.
- 59:32Speaker 2: You can be as nasty as you want, right, just
- 59:34Speaker 2: be as confrontational as possible, because pretty soon the slave
- 59:37Speaker 2: will be wiped clean anyway. So you show up and
- 59:40Speaker 2: you're just the worst to them, and it'll teach them
- 59:43Speaker 2: a lesson and you'll also get to learn something yourself,
- 59:47Speaker 2: which is that you can be as confrontational as possible.
- 59:50Speaker 3: It's practice, yeah.
- 59:51Speaker 2: Practice to you know, cause a lot of confrontations.
- 59:56Speaker 3: Yes, and then like bye as the moving van pulls up.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: You've hired to help them get out of.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Here, yes, yeah. All my solutions are like, spend a
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: lot of cash on doing their job for them. Yeah.
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: That that is crazy making though, because you're like, oh,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: once the dog's on the.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: Street, people have got to get their dogs and their
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: the thing is needs help and you don't watch out.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: I just always think like, you don't get a second chance.
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: You don't if you get a warning. If you get
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: a second warning and a third one, like something you're.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: Wrong borrowed time. Yeah, right right, an off leash dog
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: alone is too much for me. A dog running around
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: the neighborhood. It's not You should not be the other
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: neighbor's problem, right, I mean maybe Sarah. Maybe Sarah takes
- 1:00:42Speaker 2: take dog in and the dog has miss disappeared for
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: a few days, share the wits out of them. Oh,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: and then they really learned the lesson.
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: Oh gosh, uh my my. Also, because I'm non confrontational,
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: excepting I yelled at.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: You, love, yes you did so, sorry whatever.
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: But I would say, show up with a couple of
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: solutions and then uh and one threat and one threat.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Two solutions and one threat. Right, If the two first
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: two solutions don't work, then you move to threat. If
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: the threat doesn't work, kidnap the dog. Kidnap the dog.
- 1:01:19Speaker 3: Now you have another dog solved, but you have escape
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: art it.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: Yes, I think that that's a kind of a perfect
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: solution to what is essentially to what I'm seeing here
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: is not a problem, and it just seems like a
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: cry for attention from Sarah just wanted to be on
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: a podcast or something, and he.
- 1:01:34Speaker 3: Did a writing assignment. Yeah, it has to be five
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: hundred words.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Well, I think that we've solved Sarah's situation. Yes, and
- 1:01:45Speaker 2: hopefully the dog is in safe hands, away from the neighbor,
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: away from Sarah. In a third situation where somebody that's
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: not desperate for attention and can take care of dogs.
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: Is taking care of it?
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: Yeah, I hope they moved somewhere where there's a fence.
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: Yeah, or a big field and they're the only house
- 1:02:02Speaker 2: in the neighborhood. Kind of an Ann of green Gables
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: situation that sounds like heaven. I hope Matthew Cuthbert comes along.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: They moved to Prince Edward Island.
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: Oh god, that's all I want.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: I think that's all anyone wants. Oh my god, how
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: the people that actually live on Prince Edward Island field,
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: They must just be flying high all the time. They
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: must be so happy all the time. Yeah, except for
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: probably the nine months of winter they experience whatever, and
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: then they have the winter bowl.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: Puffs sleeves. Everyone's in puffs sleeves.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Love of puffs. Well I have, I mean, just an
- 1:02:39Speaker 2: all time best gift. This one more time.
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: I want to rate. I just want to rate. I
- 1:02:44Speaker 3: want the gift to rate. That's all I want.
- 1:02:46Speaker 2: Yeah, of course, let's see if we can get that
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: sound on Mike, isn't it. That's cute.
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: That's a little finger coming out turning it off.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: I love this thing. I'm so glad that's such a
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: nice time with you. Wonderful time with you. I've been
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: a fan and now I got to be guests. I've
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: been a fan of yours and I'm glad that you've
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: gotten to be a guest as well. Oh my goodness,
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: what a great situation for both of us.
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: Even though I lost other gifts.
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: Yeah, these are past gifts, a small sampling, it's a
- 1:03:15Speaker 2: growing selection. Jephane's just picked up a sign that says
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: I have no cruise control. It's like the cruises book themselves.
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: That's from Damien Fahi. My gorgeous piece of decor. What
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: a beauty. Yeah, you've got some good stuff. Yeah, I've
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: gotten some good stuff. I've gotten a lot of garbage,
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: and those guests should be ashamed. We'll talk off, Mike.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: I'll email you the list. Thank you, thank you for
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: being here.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Thank you for having me.
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: Have a wonderful day. Listener. The podcast is over, and
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: that's fine. Podcasts come to an end on occasion. This
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: one's ending, and you have to just deal with those
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: feelings on your own. I'm closing the door. I love you, goodbye.
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: I said no gifts is an exactly right production. Our
- 1:04:04Speaker 2: senior producer is Ellis Nelson, and our episodes are beautifully
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: mixed by Ben Holliday. The theme song is by Miracle
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: Worker Amy Mann, and we couldn't do it without our booker,
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: Patrick Cottner. You must follow the show on Instagram. At
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: I said, no gifts, that's where you're going to see
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: pictures of all these wonderful gifts I'm getting. And don't
