- 0:05Saturday, November eighteenth, a noon kick at Brenton Whitney Stadium. Tickets available
- 0:09at Yukon tickets dot com, Yukon Huskies Football, football, tailgating and fun.
- 0:14Yukon travels to Knoxville. First time they've met the volunteers on the football
- 0:19field. It's the volunteers ninety ninth homecoming game. They won ten straight.
- 0:24They're really on a roll. Josh Heipel, who came from UCF, now
- 0:28he's won seventeen of his last twenty one games there after his first year going
- 0:32seven and six. I'm looking at their roster, Jim, and they got
- 0:37fourteen out of their twenty two on the depth chart, you know as grads
- 0:41super seniors. So not only are they you know, they quality players,
- 0:46they're older guys. And we talked about this a few times. The offense
- 0:49starts five super seniors, defense has three super seniors. You're competing against that.
- 0:55It's tough. It's a tough road to hope, but I mean this
- 0:58is this is the Nate Sure the game. At this point, these schools
- 1:02are just attacking the portal on all levels and putting teams together annually. I
- 1:07mean, it's really hard to develop a team, you know, one year,
- 1:11two years, look at at a three year development. Now, well,
- 1:17I mean they've done They've done a really good job of attacking the portal
- 1:23and you know, taking advantage of this nil that's the name of the game
- 1:32in college football right now. And you know, I don't know that anyone
- 1:34really likes it, at least to the extent that it's become what it is.
- 1:40I think that you know, players should be compensated for sure, for
- 1:42their name, image, their likeness when others are benefiting off of them.
- 1:46But if you don't have money, it's tough sledding, you know, it's
- 1:53tough sledding. If you have money, you can go get players. Now.
- 1:57You never want a player to come to you just because of money,
- 2:01right you just don't. But if you don't have money to compete, they're
- 2:06not going to come to you, you know. And that's what's that's just
- 2:09the nature of the game right now. And like I said, you know,
- 2:12I don't love it, you know, I don't love where it's at.
- 2:17But it is what it is, and they've done a really good job
- 2:20of retaining players. Number one, so paying the players on their team so
- 2:24that people can't come and poach them. And number two, they've done a
- 2:29great job of going out and seeking out guys that are in the portal that
- 2:34can help them be a good football team and get them, you know,
- 2:38through their recruiting and through their ability to pay them. And that's not exclusive
- 2:44to Tennessee. So it's not like I'm sitting here like some coaches say that,
- 2:47well, they sure bought a good team. No, they didn't buy
- 2:50a good team. They recruited a good team. They figured it out,
- 2:53they had money. They did what's necessary in college football today, just like
- 2:57Boston College. Did you know, like I said earlier in the show,
- 3:00it's a different team. So it's the new world, man, it's the
- 3:02new world. It's it's in this way in basketball. It's just waying football,
- 3:07and you know, you gotta you gotta be able to adjust to it
- 3:10if you want to if you want to compete. And boy, they've done
- 3:15a really good job. And those schools like we just talked about Tennessee,
- 3:20Duke acc I mean, the rights fees they're collecting in these conferences is substantial,
- 3:25you know, money to really put a foundation together financially to keep these
- 3:30teams going and recruiting grads and super seniors. And one, you know,
- 3:35one guy that's not like that. He hung around Jackson Mitchell, and we
- 3:38all love the guy. I was watching him on special teams, coach.
- 3:40He got down and made some plays amazing on punt punt returns. Oh my
- 3:46goodness, I'm thinking to myself, this guy is is the linebacker in on
- 3:52ten fifteen tackles a game, and yet he's down on punt coverage making plays.
- 3:57Yeah, and then really he runs down like four yards on a pump,
- 4:00makes a tackle, and then he asks the lineup and play linebacker.
- 4:03It's it's inspiring. And it's funny that you bring that up, because we
- 4:08were telling guys, the young players, the young players on our team that
- 4:12maybe get tired or whatever. Take a look at Jackson Mitchell all right,
- 4:15and ask him how he does it? Like how did you? How do
- 4:18you do this? What is what is it about you? What is it
- 4:23about you that it gives you the ability to play so hard on special teams,
- 4:28so hard on defense, to never get tired, Like what do you
- 4:30do during the week, what's your mindset, what's your thought process, what's
- 4:33your you know, your preparation, because you're special, man, and he
- 4:39he's special. And man, I'm so glad you recognized that and brought it
- 4:43up today because it was a point that the coaching staff made. Is watch
- 4:46Jackson Mitchell practice, watch him prepare, and then watching him play and it
- 4:51all is connected and it's amazing. Yeah. Uh, Victor Rosa couldn't play
- 4:58last week. You you had said that you thought he was you know,
- 5:00he was available, was in uniform, he was going to play, and
- 5:03then he did not play. What happened in pregame? Was he sore?
- 5:08What would happen there with Victor? Well, we watched him in really in
- 5:11one on one and some of the team in pregame, and he wasn't ready
- 5:15to go, you know, I mean he was close, but he wasn't
- 5:17ready to go. And I just don't think it's fair to put a young
- 5:19player like Victor, really, any player out like Victor that's going to have
- 5:24the ball in his hands with eleven guys coming to try to get it and
- 5:26get him, and if he can't protect himself because he's a little bit gimpy,
- 5:30that you cannot you can't put a player in that position, right,
- 5:33and it's dangerous. It's a dangerous sport anyway, And so the decision was
- 5:40made that we're going to hold him, you know, and it was the
- 5:43right decision. He wasn't he just wasn't quite ready to go quite Frankly,
- 5:46I was surprised that he was as far along as he was on Saturday,
- 5:49which was really encouraging. And it just goes to show you how important it
- 5:54is to him and how hard he worked and how hard our athletic trainers and
- 5:57Bob Howard worked to get him back. Yeah, here's this week's questionable call
- 6:04question, Chris Shearon. That was not past interference. In my mind,
- 6:09that was a big call against Chris. I thought he played that almost perfect.
- 6:13If I'm a defensive back, that's the way I make that play.
- 6:16Yeah. I watched the film from every angle and I didn't think it was
- 6:19PI either. And once again, it's a third down call. It keeps
- 6:24the drive alive. You know, those are killers. And you know,
- 6:28I don't know what to tell Chris on that other than it's a hell of
- 6:30a job and you know, unlucky break. Yeah, all right, quick
- 6:35time out back with Jim Moore. We wrap up the coaches segment and we
- 6:39get ready for Nick Harrison, Malcolm Bell as well. This is the Yukon
- 6:42Football Coaches Show on Lear Field.
