- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Beth Fagan. Unionized workers at the Cornerbrook Civic Center
- 0:09Speaker 2: have been locked out by the city after CUPE Local
- 0:12Speaker 2: 4386 walked away from the bargaining table. VOCM's Richard Duggan.
- 0:17Speaker 3: A collective agreement could not be reached between the two
- 0:19Speaker 3: parties when they met yesterday and they had agreed to
- 0:22Speaker 3: meet again today. The city says it asked CUPE to
- 0:25Speaker 3: commit to a 24-hour strike notice, but the union would
- 0:28Speaker 3: not agree. The city argues it had no choice but
- 0:31Speaker 3: to lock out workers in order to protect the safety
- 0:33Speaker 3: and security of the facility, as well as to safely
- 0:36Speaker 3: shut down its heating and cooling systems. It says it
- 0:38Speaker 3: could not risk being left in a position where workers
- 0:41Speaker 3: could walk out at a moment's notice, leaving the facility unattended.
- 0:44Speaker 3: The city says it offered a total compensation proposal valued
- 0:47Speaker 3: at 12% over four years, which is fair and in
- 0:50Speaker 3: line with other municipalities. Local President Craig Gardner says he
- 0:54Speaker 3: is disappointed with the situation, saying the union had lowered
- 0:58Speaker 3: its offer in hopes of getting a deal, but the
- 1:00Speaker 3: city wouldn't budge and came back to the table with
- 1:02Speaker 3: essentially the same offer they've had for months. He says
- 1:06Speaker 3: workers remained on site today and were ready to power
- 1:08Speaker 3: down all equipment, but were met with a lockout instead.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Richard Duggan, VOCM, Local News Now.
- 1:15Speaker 2: A St. John's woman is seeking answers after being told
- 1:18Speaker 2: the COVID vaccine she requires is not currently available in
- 1:22Speaker 2: the province. Michelle Penns has multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune disease,
- 1:26Speaker 2: and requires a COVID vaccine each year to protect her.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Because she started taking the Pfizer vaccine, she's been advised
- 1:33Speaker 2: by her neurologist to stick with that brand. But she's
- 1:35Speaker 2: been told the only vaccine currently available is Moderna. Pence,
- 1:39Speaker 2: who is originally from Vancouver, says she is more or
- 1:42Speaker 2: less housebound without the protection afforded by a vaccine.
- 1:46Speaker 1: It's very, very important with a situation like MS, which
- 1:49Speaker 1: is an autoimmune disease, that you are consistent with the
- 1:53Speaker 1: kind of COVID vaccine that you get. I've been getting
- 1:56Speaker 1: Pfizer since the beginning. And even with that consistency, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: get sick after a vaccination. And I am desperately trying
- 2:04Speaker 1: to get a Pfizer vaccine. so that I can resume
- 2:08Speaker 1: going to health care appointments, being in public situations, and
- 2:14Speaker 1: this is proving to be very problematic.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Meanwhile, the Department of Health says the province carries both
- 2:21Speaker 2: the Pfizer and Moderna COVID vaccines. However, the availability of
- 2:25Speaker 2: each may vary by clinic and location based on supply, demand,
- 2:28Speaker 2: and distribution. The department says a specific brand may not
- 2:32Speaker 2: always be available at every vaccination site. It says both
- 2:35Speaker 2: the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are mRNA vaccines and are
- 2:39Speaker 2: considered safe and effective, and there is no recommendation for
- 2:43Speaker 2: one product over the other. And convenience stores and lotto
- 2:47Speaker 2: machines will be busy again today with the $ 90 million
- 2:50Speaker 2: lotto max on the line once again. The big jackpot
- 2:54Speaker 2: did not go on Friday night, meaning the maxed out
- 2:57Speaker 2: lotto windfall will remain at $ 90 million until someone matches
- 3:02Speaker 2: all the right numbers. There are also $ 21 million prizes
- 3:06Speaker 2: on the line, plus extra chances to win on the
- 3:09Speaker 2: tag and twist. Tickets can be purchased at any Lotto
- 3:12Speaker 2: retailer online at ALC.ca or via the ALC app. That's
- 3:17Speaker 2: the news. I'm Beth Higgins.
