- 1:02Hello, my name's Andy. I'm an alcoholic.
- 1:07I'm a member of a A. When I first started going to
- 1:12meetings, I'll talk about what it was like.
- 1:18I first sort of picked up a drink when I was approximately
- 1:225-6 years old. My father, we was a tradesman,
- 1:29would let his kids, I'm one of three go and get a study.
- 1:34And if you go and get your old man a beer, you can have a swig.
- 1:38And I was, AI was the kind of kid that, you know, I, I
- 1:43remember vividly my, my father just giving me a, you know, not
- 1:47a, not a hard smack across the head, but enough to go oy, you
- 1:51know, because I definitely swigged at it a little bit too
- 1:55hard. And there was a few gulps
- 1:57involved in that. I had my experience with drugs
- 2:07as well. I definitely had my first good
- 2:12drunk at 11 years old, blind drunk with my brother's
- 2:18girlfriend. We were drinking cruises.
- 2:23No it was Cougar Cougar and Coke at a Commission flats in
- 2:35Melbourne City, Victoria, Australia and it just progressed
- 2:43very quickly from there. I, I was expelled from 2 schools
- 2:49in high school and by the age of 15, I was allowed to do an
- 2:57apprenticeship with carpentry. And I was definitely binge
- 3:03drinking every Friday and Saturday night and doing
- 3:09anything to, to get away from reality.
- 3:13And it was, I eventually stuffed up that carpentry apprenticeship
- 3:24after about 10 months, 12 months.
- 3:27So I had to go and work with my father who was a bricklayer.
- 3:31And he said some very strong words that I, I hung onto for a
- 3:37very long time. And that was men that work hard
- 3:41deserve to drink. And so I did my best to work as
- 3:49hard as I could, and I drank and I drank a lot and I made a lot
- 4:00of very bad decisions. I still had a lot of other
- 4:04substances that were going on, but alcohol was definitely
- 4:07number one. And I would have been 18.
- 4:15I would have been 18 years old and had my first breakup.
- 4:21I wasn't 18 1/2 and I'd drunken so much that I swore that I
- 4:27wasn't going to drink for 40 days.
- 4:31And I ended up doing it. I, I went 40 days without a
- 4:36drink and, you know, proved to everyone that, you know, I
- 4:39could, I could beat alcohol. And of course, 40 days was
- 4:46nowhere near enough for someone who drank like I did.
- 4:49You know, it took a little while to get back on it and get the
- 4:52taste back for it. But I was a very persistent
- 4:55person. So I, I kept going out there and
- 5:03giving it a, a nudge and it ended up costing me a lot of
- 5:09relationships and a lot of friendships.
- 5:11And you know, when you're ringing up members of your
- 5:16family 10:30 at night, black out drunk, they don't really want to
- 5:20talk to you and they're, they're fully aware of the kind of
- 5:24nonsense that you're going to talk.
- 5:26So I staggered through life, then my my girlfriend when I was
- 5:37about 24. At that stage I'd already had
- 5:41one DUI, drink, drink driving, lost my license for 13 months.
- 5:53During that time I met up with a lady in Adelaide.
- 5:56I rekindled a relationship that I had with a lady that moved to
- 6:00Adelaide and after three or four months of our renewed
- 6:06relationship, she announced she was pregnant.
- 6:10I was still catching the bus because I was unable to drive
- 6:14because my DUII took it on the chin, something I was quite
- 6:18proud of. But at the same time it's
- 6:22probably because I was too chicken to go to jail and I
- 6:30remember sitting on the bus because you lose your license
- 6:33for drink driving. So what do you do if you start
- 6:36drinking more? I remember sitting there on the
- 6:41bus and her being pregnant and me swearing that my daughters
- 6:49were never going, my daughter was going to see me drink.
- 6:52It never ended up happening. I moved over there, moved over
- 7:01here to SA and of course I controlled it as much as I could
- 7:10and I had my mother who was living over here as well, really
- 7:15doing her best to make sure that I kept my under my alcohol
- 7:22somewhat under control. And of course the the devils and
- 7:28things that you know, come up through my anger and you know,
- 7:33I, I had somewhat control of it, but I didn't.
- 7:38And I remember my heavily pregnant girlfriend saying
- 7:42pulling me up once I rolled over the next morning after I had a
- 7:47little binge and I rolled over and I had no idea what the hell
- 7:52I did after about 8:00 at night. And I presume that the party
- 7:57rolled on because I woke up in bed, but my last recollection
- 8:00was sitting in my backyard. I rolled over and I said, I'm
- 8:04sorry, honey. And she's like, what are you
- 8:08sorry for? Took her a couple of seconds to
- 8:11click. She said, you can't remember a
- 8:14damn thing that happened, can you?
- 8:17She's like, you were blackout drunk.
- 8:20I had to admit it. And then a lot of other things
- 8:27seemed to compile. I was never very good at holding
- 8:30down a job. I'd make friends and only keep
- 8:35them around for a very short period of time.
- 8:37And yeah, I by the age of 28 I'd completely lost everything and I
- 8:54was only allowed to see my daughters if I was sober.
- 8:56My mother wanted nothing to do with me.
- 8:59I'd already done one stint in a psychiatric ward for a fortnight
- 9:07and one rehab and I was I was spent.
- 9:20It was 2 psychiatric wards, I should say, and the only way
- 9:26that my ex, my ex-girlfriend, would let me see my daughters
- 9:31was if I was sober. And it was not something I could
- 9:35do. I knew that I couldn't do it
- 9:39alone, and I reached out to DASA and certain places I'd already
- 9:48been to a rehabilitation center in Melbourne, private a private
- 9:521, and I couldn't stop. I knew I couldn't.
- 9:58I was allowed to spend a week with my daughters, but I had to
- 10:03be sober. And I knew I couldn't do that.
- 10:10And I'd already heard of a A and I'd heard some.
- 10:15Some people had introduced me to it, My father and certain people
- 10:19had mentioned a, A and I walked into my first meeting completely
- 10:26destroyed. I remember the night before I
- 10:31had alcohol all throughout my friend's house that I was living
- 10:34at. And you know, I had, I had about
- 10:41four cases of beer. And the night before I went to a
- 10:49meeting, I was mucking around. I had a million things to do and
- 10:52I, I had my first stubby at, at 10:00 at night and I drank it
- 10:59down and then I had about a mouthful, 2 mouthfuls out of the
- 11:04next beer and I just tipped down the sink.
- 11:07And it, it was something I'd never done, you know, like I'd
- 11:12leave, wake up the next morning and I'd wake up and there were
- 11:16two or three stubbies, you know, amongst all the empties that
- 11:19still had, you know, 3/4 or half a stubby in them.
- 11:23And I was so ashamed of myself because I thought, well, Jesus,
- 11:26I could have, wow, that could have given my, my liver more
- 11:30exercise. And it was the, the start of me
- 11:37rebuilding my life. And I ended up, I ended up very,
- 11:45very slowly rebuilding a relationship with the mother of
- 11:51my children, my two daughters. I, I've got, I have two
- 11:56daughters and I got a, an OK job and I had everything that I, I
- 12:09wanted. I believed I, I had moments of
- 12:12serenity. I could sit out, I could sit at
- 12:16the, the house that I used to rent and the gardens were
- 12:22maintained. The, the, the, the grass was
- 12:25mowed, the, the kids were playing on their on their swings
- 12:31and they were just happy. And I was sitting there with a
- 12:35coffee and a cigarette. And she was my fiance at the
- 12:39time. I ended up marrying the mother
- 12:44of my children and I was content and it was so alien to me.
- 12:54I'd never felt anything like that before.
- 13:01I wish I could tell you that's where the story stops.
- 13:04But I ended up becoming irritable and discontent and I
- 13:12wanted more and I stopped going to meetings and I stopped
- 13:16talking with, with good, with good, humble people.
- 13:22And I started to take on board things that I, I thought I was
- 13:32entitled to. So, you know, like you hear
- 13:36little cliches in those in the business worlds and the business
- 13:39forums of if you hang around 9 successful people, you'll become
- 13:45the 10th. And my drive for money and
- 13:48things and my want for more got the better of me.
- 13:54And I, I completely lost what I thought was my core beliefs of,
- 14:01of my, my daughters and doing what was right for there's a
- 14:09little, you know, for everyone. I just started to want more.
- 14:15And that ended up causing my divorce.
- 14:18And subsequently, about a year, year and a half later, I ended
- 14:23up going out there and drinking again.
- 14:26And that was one of the worst mistakes I ever made.
- 14:29Because you go out there and you, you start drinking after 7
- 14:361/2 years of being sober, you, you hear of all the weird and
- 14:41wonderful ways that people used to hide alcohol and you end up
- 14:44doing it yourself. And all of those things that I
- 14:50built up over 7 1/2 years haunt me sometimes.
- 14:56The fact that I, I was so discontented and yet I still sit
- 15:04here today and yes, I am. I don't have much sobriety, but
- 15:12I, I did have a lot and well, I had 7 1/2 years and it all
- 15:19starts with one day. And it wasn't a rehab or a
- 15:25counselor or you know, some university graduate or some,
- 15:34someone with 101 university degrees that got me sober.
- 15:41It was, it was a gentleman that are in the a, a meetings with,
- 15:47with the dirt under their fingernails and, and 101 stories
- 15:52of, of the stupidity that they'd survived and the amazing things
- 15:57that they had seen. And you, you talk to some of
- 16:01these, these, these nurses and things about, you know, you
- 16:08can't physically drink that it would kill you.
- 16:13And I've been, I've been around enough people to drink.
- 16:16And you figure out that it's, it's true.
- 16:20And you start torturing your body and it's, it's a, it's a
- 16:29special kind of hell when you're an alcoholic and you know the
- 16:35right thing to do. And yet you still you still try
- 16:40to find an easier, softer way than not drinking.
- 16:45And I heard I heard someone say just last night about non
- 16:51alcoholic wine and it's just I can't touch that.
- 16:56I some, I used to feel guilty when I had a, a good amount of
- 17:01sobriety up to drink the, the Bundaberg ginger beer out of
- 17:08those stubbies because they're, they're reminiscent of, of a of,
- 17:12of, of beer stubby. And it's when you, when you got
- 17:20to get sober, you, you give up .2% of your life, you got 2%,
- 17:27you give up 2% of your life and you regain 98% of it because
- 17:33that 2% of your life, you're, you're obsessing about getting
- 17:39that next drink. And when you start to get a
- 17:44little bit of clarity in your life, you see that that's what
- 17:48happens. And you get clearer thoughts and
- 17:52you start to see that, wow, my whole focus is pretty much no
- 17:59different than than those people who are addicted to heroin.
- 18:03It's just it's socially acceptable for me.
- 18:08You know, like I live in Australia.
- 18:10We, we have a culture of if you work hard, you deserve a beer or
- 18:17I'm having a glass of wine to be social for this business deal.
- 18:22I am drinking because I feel sad.
- 18:29I am celebrating the fact that I got a promotion at work.
- 18:34I there is absolutely of there's a billion reasons to drink to a
- 18:41billion excuses to have a drink. But when it cost me way over
- 18:48half of my life, way over half my life, my sanity, my health,
- 18:55my dignity, my financials, it's my family, it's it's not, it's
- 19:07not worth the gamble. And I sit here and I can say
- 19:11that, but whether I walk the walk or talk the talk are two
- 19:14very different things. So I am choosing to go to a A so
- 19:24that I can have something that I know that works for me.
- 19:29And I still do talk to drug and alcohol counsellors and things
- 19:35like that. And I'm hoping in time I can
- 19:40work with people in addiction and people that have gone
- 19:44through traumas in their life. And a lot of people have said to
- 19:48me that they either go, yes, you should do it or B, you are way
- 19:54too crazy for it. And that's what happens to
- 19:59people when, when we go to hospital and we see someone on
- 20:05a, on a Gurney in the emergency room next to us and they're,
- 20:09they're shouting profanities and you go, wow, I'm glad that's not
- 20:13me. But you forget that you were
- 20:17probably that guy 3 weeks ago or a month ago or a year ago that
- 20:21was in that blackout stage. That had done those things and
- 20:28it's very hard for us to it's very hard for me to, to work out
- 20:38when I'm at fault. And I, I know a lot of people
- 20:42have that problem and it's, it's your life's not going to be
- 20:49perfect when you stop drinking. There were a lot of times where
- 20:53I made a lot of bad choices and I have done very silly things,
- 21:00but they were nowhere near as bad as when I had a belly full
- 21:05of booze and not thinking with my head.
- 21:10I was just doing my next impulse.
- 21:14I would strive to, you know, someone would would mention a
- 21:20day or two prior that they did something and of course I would
- 21:24have to one up them. And it's no way of living if you
- 21:33if you have to be the loudest person in the room with people
- 21:37really ever listening to you. And it's a very humbling
- 21:45program. And if anything that I've said
- 21:48today, it hits you in any way, then maybe you should think
- 21:59about coming to a meeting. And I'm sure you're not going to
- 22:03be in your, in your Sunday best and cleanly shaven and thinking
- 22:07the world is roses. It's it's going to hit you hard.
- 22:10And it does hit all of us very hard.
- 22:14And we've seen many, I've, I have personally seen many people
- 22:20not survive the alcoholism and, and drug abuse in general.
- 22:29It's a very hard thing to, to grapple with.
- 22:35But you do have people out there who will stand there and laugh
- 22:39with you at some of the silly things.
- 22:42Like I would go to people, I would tell people some of the
- 22:46silly things that I've done and they would just stand there and
- 22:49go. That is completely unbelievable.
- 22:51I do not believe it. And then I talk to certain
- 22:55members of a A and I not only tell some people, not all
- 23:01people, but I talk to some people about where my train of
- 23:06thought was and all of that. And they can verbalize it better
- 23:10than I can. They can put the context around
- 23:13it. They can give a deeper meaning
- 23:17to it and they can see, they can see through all of your garbage.
- 23:23And I am someone that needs that and I'm a member of Alcoholics
- 23:30Anonymous and I hope I will be a member for a while longer.
- 23:36But at the same time, I'm happy just not having a drink today
- 23:41and going to a meeting tonight. That's excellent Andy, very
- 23:46good. Thank you.
- 23:48You're doing really well then. Thanks for the share and yeah,
- 23:53it works if you work it and if you have you know as I say, if
- 23:57you've got a problem with alcohol, then just one 1300
- 24:02double 22222 and that will get you in touch with the
- 24:07fellowship. So great stuff.
