Latest / The Daily Writer / Writing is an Act of Rebellion
Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey my friend, welcome to The Daily Writer, where we help writers become authors of their own lives.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Pee-wee's Big Adventure is one of the greatest movies of the 1980s, and yes, that is a hill I will absolutely die on.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: Now, sure, it's a totally silly movie with humor suited for eight-year-olds, and it features a completely ridiculous lead character and a plot that barely makes sense, but all that aside, the movie redeems itself with this classic line.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: You don't want to get mixed up with a guy like me.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: I'm a loner, Dottie, a rebel.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: Now, ridiculous movies aside, you might have more in common with Pee-Wee Herman than you think.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Writing, after all, is an act of rebellion.
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: The only purpose of writing, in fact, is to share something that hasn't been explored in quite the same way before.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Now, maybe that writing takes place in the form of a story, a blog post, a social media snippet, a book, an article, a lesson, a sermon, or something else.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: But the point is that you're creating material because you're trying to write a wrong in the world.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: You're trying to fill a gap that exists in knowledge or in story or in something else.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: And when you write, you're rebelling against the status quo, the state of things as they now exist.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: All writing exists because the communicator is trying to change the reader in some ways.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: In other words, being timid and holding back isn't serving anybody.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: If you need a dose of courage, consider this email to be a little dose of medicine.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: It is okay.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: In fact, it's preferred that you be bold and opinionated and persuasive, because the only way that we can move forward in society is when people rebel against existing ideas.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: In fact, that's the whole nature of the creative act in a nutshell.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: We are rebelling against existing ideas.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: We're standing up and we're saying, I believe this thing needs to exist in the world because it does not yet exist.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: The bottom line we need more rebels.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Thanks for listening.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Keep writing, keep showing up, and I'll see you tomorrow.
