- 1:39Speaker 4: Happy Thursday, one step closer to your weekend. We're still
- 1:41Speaker 4: talking about the special session which wrapped up on Tuesday night.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Late Tuesday night, a Million Niceley from West Virginia Watch
- 1:48Speaker 4: was covering it closely and still writing about it, and
- 1:50Speaker 4: we're going to talk to her in studio a little
- 1:52Speaker 4: bit later on about some of the issues related to
- 1:55Speaker 4: childcare that we're addressed and some that were not. Sh'll
- 1:58Speaker 4: join us a little bit later on in the show.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Last night was night two of a series of hearings
- 2:02Speaker 4: having to do with school closures, consolidations, etc. I regret
- 2:06Speaker 4: I didn't get a chance to talk to to address
- 2:09Speaker 4: it at all yesterday. I hope to get to but sometimes,
- 2:11Speaker 4: you know, the show just kind of gets away from you.
- 2:13Speaker 4: Night one was Tuesday night at Riverside High concerning East
- 2:17Speaker 4: Bank Middle and the board, of course, after listening to
- 2:20Speaker 4: comments from the public, voted three to two to move
- 2:22Speaker 4: toward a closure. Last night at Saint Albans, the topic
- 2:25Speaker 4: was McKinley Middle School and the board voted five to
- 2:28Speaker 4: nothing to close McKinley Middle. I'll get into that a
- 2:32Speaker 4: little bit later on Plus Alexander Gossrudt, he's a young
- 2:35Speaker 4: management on the show in the past. He's a young
- 2:38Speaker 4: up and comer in the Republican Party, and he has
- 2:40Speaker 4: his sights set firmly on taking out another Republican not
- 2:44Speaker 4: this year because she's not up this year, but in
- 2:46Speaker 4: twenty twenty six, and that is Senator Shelley Moore Capito.
- 2:49Speaker 4: So we're gonna talk to him about that all that.
- 2:51Speaker 4: Plusure calls the text to welcome to Bigley, Pigley Wigglely
- 2:54Speaker 4: hotline three zero four three four five fifty eight fifty eight.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Tony the Tailor text three zero four nine three five
- 2:59Speaker 4: five zero zero. Right now, we're gonna talk high school
- 3:01Speaker 4: football a day early because tonight the Herbert Uver Huskies
- 3:05Speaker 4: will take on the Wayne Pioneer. Should be a good one.
- 3:07Speaker 4: Tom Bragg and Matt Murphy have all the action tonight
- 3:09Speaker 4: on her sister station ninety six to one KWS. Tom
- 3:12Speaker 4: joins us in studio this morning. Tom, Good morning, welcome
- 3:15Speaker 4: to the show.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Not usually here in person in the morning day. Good
- 3:18Speaker 5: to see your face for once.
- 3:19Speaker 6: How are you doing.
- 3:20Speaker 4: It's not necessarily a good face to see.
- 3:23Speaker 2: I'll take it, Okay, I'll take it.
- 3:25Speaker 7: It's new. I'll take it. It's new.
- 3:27Speaker 4: It's new. It's a new old face. So normally we
- 3:31Speaker 4: have games on KWS on Friday night, but we found
- 3:34Speaker 4: out that this game is going to be tonight instead.
- 3:37Speaker 4: How do you feel about Thursday night games? Well, I
- 3:39Speaker 4: mean you get Friday off now.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Yeah, it usually depends if I got a game on
- 3:43Speaker 5: Friday too or not. This time, fortunately for us at
- 3:47Speaker 5: home that we do have this Thursday game. It's my
- 3:49Speaker 5: girlfriend's twin kids eleventh birthday on Friday, so we get
- 3:53Speaker 5: a little little respite from that. We'll have a little
- 3:55Speaker 5: kids party instead of a high school football party. But yeah,
- 3:58Speaker 5: Thursday night games, I think they're fun. I think it's
- 4:00Speaker 5: it becomes odd. You see the kids maybe behave a
- 4:02Speaker 5: little bit different. They don't have that next day off.
- 4:05Speaker 5: You maybe in the back of your mind, I've still
- 4:06Speaker 5: got to get up and go to school the next morning.
- 4:08Speaker 5: So but but yeah, man, the high school football under
- 4:12Speaker 5: the lights didn't matter if it's Friday night, Thursday night,
- 4:14Speaker 5: Monday night, Tuesday night.
- 4:15Speaker 7: I love it. Man, It's a good time.
- 4:16Speaker 4: And talk about this matchup between Wayne and Herbert Hoover.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I think it's going to be a pretty good game.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Hoover's kind of had things rolling so far. Huskies are
- 4:23Speaker 5: five and over right at about the midpoint of the season.
- 4:26Speaker 5: They've kind of vanquished some foes that have tripped them
- 4:29Speaker 5: up in the past. They avenge their state title game
- 4:31Speaker 5: loss from a couple of years ago, and the opener
- 4:33Speaker 5: they beat Independence Winfield has been a team that they've
- 4:35Speaker 5: had a real hard time getting through in the regular season.
- 4:38Speaker 5: They beat them. They won an overtime on the road
- 4:39Speaker 5: at Nitro they won on the road at Chapmanville last week.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Wayne's it's not the Wayne that maybe you and I
- 4:45Speaker 5: grew up with, but they're a lot closer to that
- 4:48Speaker 5: than what they have been the last few years. Talking
- 4:51Speaker 5: with Joey Fields, the head coach at Herbert Hoover last night,
- 4:53Speaker 5: he said, you know, last year we went down to Wayne,
- 4:55Speaker 5: they were two and three, not playing real good ball,
- 4:57Speaker 5: played US real tough, and then didn't lose again until
- 4:59Speaker 5: the play went on this crazy run and played a
- 5:02Speaker 5: very very good Fairmont Senior team, very tough up at
- 5:04Speaker 5: East West Stadium in the playoffs. And they've kind of
- 5:06Speaker 5: kept that role in this year. Four and one on
- 5:08Speaker 5: the season, the loan losses to that very good Nitro team.
- 5:11Speaker 5: So it'll be interesting to see what the Pioneers do
- 5:13Speaker 5: tonight out at Oak You and it's classic Wayne wing tea.
- 5:17Speaker 5: They've got four or five kids that they like to
- 5:18Speaker 5: get the ball to. It'll be fun to watch.
- 5:20Speaker 4: And I think you said it best. I did a
- 5:21Speaker 4: little research prior to the interview today, Tom, is that
- 5:24Speaker 4: this is not the Wayne Pioneer team that we've seen
- 5:26Speaker 4: in the past one. It's always been that juggernaut by
- 5:28Speaker 4: that having been said, there are no pushovers either. No,
- 5:32Speaker 4: there are no pushovers.
- 5:33Speaker 5: And Wayne is one of those programs that really takes
- 5:38Speaker 5: that word to heart program. You know, Tommy Harmon's been
- 5:41Speaker 5: the coach there for a long time. Sam found so
- 5:42Speaker 5: much success, so many great players, so many great teams
- 5:45Speaker 5: over the years, that doesn't just go away. A lot
- 5:48Speaker 5: of these guys on the team now maybe they had
- 5:49Speaker 5: an older brother, a dad and uncle, somebody who's been
- 5:52Speaker 5: around this program when they've been at those heights, and
- 5:55Speaker 5: that trickles down and I think you're starting to see
- 5:57Speaker 5: some of that pride, some of that fight come back
- 5:59Speaker 5: down for the Pioneer. So I think if you, if
- 6:02Speaker 5: you were an odds maker, you'd probably have the Huskies
- 6:04Speaker 5: as the favorite tonight.
- 6:05Speaker 7: But I think it's gonna be a fun game. It
- 6:06Speaker 7: should be a good one.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Talking to Tom Bragg about tonight's Herbert Hoover game, he
- 6:09Speaker 4: of course, and Matt Murphy over on her sister station
- 6:12Speaker 4: ninety six one KWS will have complete coverage to Dave
- 6:14Speaker 4: Island showing five Vinty Life brought to you in part
- 6:16Speaker 4: by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. The
- 6:19Speaker 4: Birds and our sister station, The Beat, invite you to
- 6:21Speaker 4: go more Ballpark on Thursday, the twenty fourth of this
- 6:23Speaker 4: month for Trick or Beat, presented by Soelango Law. Two sessions,
- 6:27Speaker 4: one at six o'clock, the other starting at seven thirty.
- 6:29Speaker 4: You must must must have a ticket to be admitted,
- 6:32Speaker 4: and tickets are free. They're available at our studios eleven
- 6:34Speaker 4: eleven Virginia Street East and Charleston during normal business hours.
- 6:38Speaker 4: And we'll be talking a whole lot more about Tricker
- 6:39Speaker 4: Beat as it gets a little bit closer. So you
- 6:42Speaker 4: mentioned Tom that the Huskies are five and zer now
- 6:44Speaker 4: midway point of the season pretty much. I think if
- 6:47Speaker 4: you talked to Joey Fields, he's not going to say, well,
- 6:48Speaker 4: this is where we thought we would be. But I
- 6:50Speaker 4: think that a lot of folks, because coaches never want
- 6:53Speaker 4: to say that, but on the outside looking in, could
- 6:55Speaker 4: probably agree with that. Yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 5: I think if you looked at the schedule when it
- 6:58Speaker 5: came out and look at what Hoover's had coming back
- 7:02Speaker 5: roster wise, you know, having having a senior quarterback like
- 7:05Speaker 5: Dane Hatfield, who's a four year starter at this point,
- 7:08Speaker 5: a guy who's played more high school football than almost
- 7:10Speaker 5: anybody ever ever will that that really is a nice
- 7:14Speaker 5: ace to have up your sleeve. And I think you're
- 7:15Speaker 5: seeing Hoover flex that a little bit. You're starting to
- 7:17Speaker 5: see more guys get involved. Talking with coach fields, you know,
- 7:21Speaker 5: Dane Hatfield and Blake Fisher get a lot of the
- 7:24Speaker 5: the hype around this offense as they score a lot
- 7:27Speaker 5: of points. But guys like Devin Silvis, kid that came
- 7:29Speaker 5: in from sat Albans last year. Guy like Talon Harrison
- 7:31Speaker 5: played that started his career at Systemville a few years
- 7:34Speaker 5: ago and has really come on to be a playmaker,
- 7:36Speaker 5: a difference maker in special teams and on the outsideer receiver.
- 7:39Speaker 5: You're starting to see more guys get involved in and
- 7:42Speaker 5: things are starting to roll. And like you said, you
- 7:43Speaker 5: look at that schedule five and zero, probably not that
- 7:46Speaker 5: big of a stretch if someone told you they were
- 7:48Speaker 5: going to be undefeated at this point in the season.
- 7:49Speaker 5: It's going to be interesting down down this back half
- 7:53Speaker 5: of the schedule. Of course, you got Wayne Tonight. Ripley
- 7:55Speaker 5: is looming out there. This has been one of the
- 7:57Speaker 5: best Ripley teams in many years. Same thing could be
- 8:00Speaker 5: said for Elkins. Elkins is coming to Elk you in
- 8:03Speaker 5: a few weeks and then to end the season an
- 8:05Speaker 5: odd odd quirk of the schedule, Herbert Hoover's taking two
- 8:08Speaker 5: really long road trips the last two weeks of the season.
- 8:11Speaker 5: They're going to play at Hedgesville one week and then
- 8:13Speaker 5: at weir So go into the Eastern Panhandle in the
- 8:15Speaker 5: Northern Painhandle the two weeks prior to the playoffs starting.
- 8:19Speaker 5: I think the idea is to test these guys before
- 8:21Speaker 5: they get before they get into the playoffs. They've passed
- 8:23Speaker 5: all the tests so far, but they're not over. There's
- 8:26Speaker 5: still plenty plenty to come for this Hoover team. They've
- 8:28Speaker 5: got some tasks ahead of them down the stretch.
- 8:30Speaker 4: In high school football, you know, Tom, you've covered it
- 8:33Speaker 4: for a long time, is huge in West Virginia. But
- 8:34Speaker 4: I don't know if you had to get down with
- 8:37Speaker 4: a piece of paper and write down the four or
- 8:38Speaker 4: five most rabid fan bases and how the community all
- 8:41Speaker 4: rallies around the school and it was that way. I mean,
- 8:44Speaker 4: everybody talks about the flood from a couple of years
- 8:46Speaker 4: ago or twenty sixteen, I guess, but it was that
- 8:49Speaker 4: way before. I can remember years ago, years and year
- 8:52Speaker 4: back when you were a kid. I could remember going
- 8:54Speaker 4: to calling a Herbert Hoover game. It was a Man
- 8:57Speaker 4: High School Logan County Man played at Herbert Hoover. I mean,
- 9:00Speaker 4: I'm talking twenty twenty five years ago.
- 9:02Speaker 5: And probably they were both probably Triple A teams in
- 9:04Speaker 5: the MSAZ back and I did that game, and I.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Remember them thinking, I don't think I had ever gone
- 9:09Speaker 4: to a game that had as much community support. And
- 9:12Speaker 4: how everybody just rallied around. That's kind of the trademark,
- 9:16Speaker 4: if you will, of the Herbert Hoover.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Yeah, I think you said it, just the way that
- 9:21Speaker 5: that community rallies around, not just the football team, but
- 9:26Speaker 5: the whole school, whether it's athletics or academics or the
- 9:29Speaker 5: band or whatever they've got going on. Those folks up
- 9:31Speaker 5: at Elk River that love their Huskies, and it's really
- 9:34Speaker 5: cool to see you talk about some of the programs
- 9:37Speaker 5: around the state like that. It's another Huskies program that comes.
- 9:40Speaker 7: To mind for me.
- 9:40Speaker 5: I worked at the paper up in Fairmont for a
- 9:42Speaker 5: while and the North Marion Huskies. It's a real similar community,
- 9:45Speaker 5: just a real similar vibe. Some of the other big
- 9:48Speaker 5: ones come off. I mean, you think about the Parkersburg's,
- 9:50Speaker 5: the Morgantowns, the Wheeling Parks, the Beckley Woodrow Wilson. There's
- 9:54Speaker 5: some really great fan bases around the state. Those are
- 9:56Speaker 5: just big sicles getting in some of these small ones.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Doddridge County I always thought had fantastic support for that
- 10:01Speaker 5: football team Independence we talked about earlier with Herbert Hoover.
- 10:04Speaker 5: I could go on all day about this day. There's
- 10:05Speaker 5: a so many good fan bases around the state. I've
- 10:08Speaker 5: been very, very lucky to get to do what I've
- 10:10Speaker 5: done for as long as I have and had that
- 10:12Speaker 5: flexibility to not just be pigeonholed in and say, oh,
- 10:16Speaker 5: you're going to every Saint Albans game this year.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Oh you're going.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I've been able to see games all over the state
- 10:20Speaker 5: and it's just been so much fun for me. I'm
- 10:22Speaker 5: really lucky.
- 10:23Speaker 4: And you and Matt Murphy will have action beginning what
- 10:25Speaker 4: time tonight.
- 10:26Speaker 5: We usually go on about five minutes before kickoff, so
- 10:28Speaker 5: fingers crossed about six fifty five to night on ninety
- 10:30Speaker 5: six to one KWS and.
- 10:31Speaker 4: Our sister station, As I said, you said, ninety six
- 10:33Speaker 4: one KWS your home for Herbert Hoover football. All season long,
- 10:36Speaker 4: ye Matt calling and all the games, and of course
- 10:38Speaker 4: you can also catch it on the web and on
- 10:40Speaker 4: the apps and everything. And then tomorrow night we'll have
- 10:42Speaker 4: Chris Lawrence in here because Chris and Aaron Parker are
- 10:44Speaker 4: going to have coverage of Hurricane and Capital tomorrow night
- 10:47Speaker 4: on the WCHS network. That should be a good one
- 10:49Speaker 4: as well.
- 10:50Speaker 5: Yeah, I think so. Capital's kind of on the bounce
- 10:52Speaker 5: back right now. They've got some really intriguing young, kind
- 10:55Speaker 5: of inexperienced players Hurricans. The other end of that, they've
- 10:58Speaker 5: got some veteran guys who are played been playing top
- 11:01Speaker 5: level ball for a long time. Should be a fun one,
- 11:03Speaker 5: but gonna be a tough night for Capital. I think
- 11:05Speaker 5: they've they've got a lot on their plate.
- 11:06Speaker 4: All right, we'll talk to Chris about that tomorrow. Tom
- 11:08Speaker 4: I appreciate you kind of shifting gears and coming in

- 14:45Speaker 4: This fellow has been on the show before and he's
- 14:47Speaker 4: really a rising star in the world of politics in
- 14:50Speaker 4: West Virginia. Now Hexander Gostro at Alexander, good morning, welcome
- 14:52Speaker 4: to the show.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Good morning, Dave. How are you today?
- 14:54Speaker 4: And I always whenever I say your name, I want
- 14:56Speaker 4: to make sure I'm saying it right. You are you
- 14:57Speaker 4: can call me Alex Alex Alex Yes, now I'm at
- 15:00Speaker 4: the Gos route part of got Yes, it's gas. Yeah,
- 15:05Speaker 4: this is like the third time you've been on the show.
- 15:06Speaker 4: You would think I would know.
- 15:07Speaker 7: It's a tough na pronounce it.
- 15:10Speaker 4: What's the what's the background on the name.
- 15:12Speaker 7: It's Norwegian?
- 15:13Speaker 4: Norwegian. It's Norwegian for a guy with shiny shoes. Because
- 15:16Speaker 4: I told Alex when he came in the city, I said,
- 15:18Speaker 4: if nothing else, I'm going to give you the award
- 15:21Speaker 4: for having the shiniest shoes I have ever seen. In mind,
- 15:23Speaker 4: you're like a state trooper, man, I mean.
- 15:25Speaker 8: What's up with that?
- 15:25Speaker 7: Looks like the state trooper shoes. I have to give
- 15:27Speaker 7: you that. Yeah, the patent leather, you can't beat them.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Give me some of your your background, yeah, definitely.
- 15:33Speaker 7: First, I just want to say, Dave, my family's thoughts
- 15:36Speaker 7: and prayers are with Floridians currently, some that have lost
- 15:40Speaker 7: their lives, some that have lost their property, but I'm
- 15:42Speaker 7: sure their spirit will not be deterred. And I just
- 15:45Speaker 7: want to say that it's been remarkable to see how
- 15:47Speaker 7: West Virginia stepped up for North Carolinians and their UH
- 15:51Speaker 7: storm issues as well, and we hope those communities are
- 15:53Speaker 7: able to be made home heel again. I'm a thirty
- 15:57Speaker 7: two year old conservative Republican. I'm running to bring generational
- 16:02Speaker 7: change to West Virginia and to give our people hope
- 16:04Speaker 7: into the twenty first century. I don't believe that currently
- 16:08Speaker 7: we are being represented in a way that is going
- 16:11Speaker 7: to promote the state to be successful in the future.
- 16:15Speaker 7: And right now we have to find young leaders and
- 16:18Speaker 7: new leaders to bring West Virginia full circle and get
- 16:21Speaker 7: the state to where it belongs, which is in the
- 16:23Speaker 7: top third of states in the country.
- 16:24Speaker 4: And you've already set your sights on your next venture,
- 16:28Speaker 4: so to speak, twenty twenty six against Senator Shelley Moore Capital.
- 16:32Speaker 7: Yes, so we are going to take on Senator Shelley
- 16:34Speaker 7: Moore Capitol, who's been in federal office for twenty four
- 16:37Speaker 7: years and she is served the state of West Virginia.
- 16:40Speaker 7: I thank her for her service, but I believe West
- 16:43Speaker 7: Virginians deserve a fighter, and deserve a conservative, and deserve
- 16:47Speaker 7: somebody that can go fight for West Virginians in a
- 16:49Speaker 7: way that we have not seen Senator Capitol do over
- 16:52Speaker 7: her time in Congress.
- 16:53Speaker 4: What do you think that where do you have issue
- 16:55Speaker 4: with her and what she's not done?
- 16:57Speaker 7: In your opinion, well, the first thing, she's not the
- 16:59Speaker 7: conservative that I am, so I don't believe that she's
- 17:02Speaker 7: a conservative. I think, if anything, she's a liberal Republican,
- 17:04Speaker 7: maybe not even a real conservative at all. I see
- 17:08Speaker 7: her speeches on the Senate floor, I see her Senate
- 17:12Speaker 7: leadership press conferences, and she doesn't seem to be somebody
- 17:15Speaker 7: that is delivering passionate statements. She doesn't seem to really
- 17:20Speaker 7: have the fire and the energy that we need out
- 17:22Speaker 7: of our leaders. She's very bland. She I believe, is
- 17:25Speaker 7: a stale politician at this point, and I think with
- 17:28Speaker 7: the age she's at now, you know it's time to
- 17:31Speaker 7: retire and let some new West Virginians serve this state.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Do you think we should have term limits?
- 17:36Speaker 11: I do.
- 17:36Speaker 4: I do.
- 17:37Speaker 7: I'm a constitutionalist. I follow what's in the constitution, So
- 17:40Speaker 7: anything that's not in the Constitution I am highly suspect of.
- 17:44Speaker 7: But I think that we have seen the same politicians
- 17:47Speaker 7: stay shackled to the same seats in this nation for decades.
- 17:52Speaker 7: And yes, we will lose some good people, will lose
- 17:55Speaker 7: some institutional staples at times, but I think to get
- 17:59Speaker 7: rid of the bad actors, people like Nancy Pelosi, which
- 18:01Speaker 7: have sat in Congress for forty years. I'll give you
- 18:04Speaker 7: a quick stat and show you how corrupt our country
- 18:07Speaker 7: has become. Nancy Pelosi, on her current salary as a
- 18:10Speaker 7: US House of Representative would have had to serve in
- 18:13Speaker 7: the US Congress for three thousand years to have a
- 18:15Speaker 7: mass the amount of wealth that she is amassed as
- 18:17Speaker 7: a lawmaker. I think our system has big problems and
- 18:21Speaker 7: bringing pure conservatives to the fold is necessary to bring
- 18:25Speaker 7: America together and lead us into the twenty first century.
- 18:27Speaker 4: What is your definition, Alex of a true conservative? Because
- 18:30Speaker 4: we get this battle a lot that people say. And
- 18:33Speaker 4: I heard you, with all due respect, I heard you've
- 18:35Speaker 4: talked about other people and you said, well, we hear
- 18:37Speaker 4: the term rhino thrown out there a lot, and to
- 18:40Speaker 4: be fair on the other side, to hear the term
- 18:41Speaker 4: dianoh thrown out there a lot as well.
- 18:43Speaker 12: Well.
- 18:43Speaker 4: What is a true conservative to Alex gas rhad gas RD.
- 18:46Speaker 13: So, a true.
- 18:47Speaker 7: Conservative is somebody that follows the Constitution, that doesn't believe
- 18:50Speaker 7: it's a living, breathing document. Somebody that stands up for
- 18:53Speaker 7: physical responsibility. If you look at a thirty six trillion
- 18:56Speaker 7: dollars debt that we have now reckless spending packages. One
- 18:58Speaker 7: of the reasons we have to replace under Capitol is
- 19:01Speaker 7: she continues to facilitate these continuing resolutions and omnibus packages.
- 19:05Speaker 7: She won't commit to getting back to a regular order
- 19:07Speaker 7: in the United States Senate, which continues to balloon our debt.
- 19:10Speaker 7: So physical conservatism is huge. We need to get back
- 19:13Speaker 7: to continuing resolutions and single item spending bills. Sovereignty, the
- 19:17Speaker 7: sovereignty of this nation is critical. If you don't have borders,
- 19:20Speaker 7: if you don't have sovereignty, you don't have a country.
- 19:22Speaker 7: You don't have a constitution anymore. So border security is very,
- 19:26Speaker 7: very important in the new conservative mindset of the twenty
- 19:29Speaker 7: first century. You must have secure borders. We must deincentivize
- 19:32Speaker 7: people to come here and get rid of the asylum
- 19:36Speaker 7: system altogether in US law. But people ultimately that believe
- 19:41Speaker 7: government should be right sized is conservatism. You know, I
- 19:43Speaker 7: don't believe that the current federal agencies at their certain
- 19:47Speaker 7: size and scope now should allow to continue. We need
- 19:50Speaker 7: to reduce bureaucracy, EPA, Department of Education, IRS, all of
- 19:55Speaker 7: these three letter agents.
- 19:56Speaker 4: Are you saying reducing or we're talking about eliminating.
- 19:59Speaker 7: I'd like to limit. It's the Department of Education. But
- 20:01Speaker 7: reducing these government agencies is necessary. Every single agency needs
- 20:05Speaker 7: less people working in We need less people working in
- 20:07Speaker 7: government today, and we need to get this country back
- 20:10Speaker 7: on track. It is so far off the rails. We're
- 20:12Speaker 7: head of the way of the Roman Empire economically.
- 20:14Speaker 4: But Dave Allen Chillin five Adeline brought to you by
- 20:16Speaker 4: Morgan and Morgan with more than twenty billion dollars recovered.
- 20:19Speaker 4: They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more. Morgan
- 20:21Speaker 4: Morgan is America's largest entry law firm. Is politics something
- 20:25Speaker 4: that you've always been interested in? Were you like the
- 20:27Speaker 4: Alex found I don't know if you know who Alex P.
- 20:29Speaker 4: Keaton is, but on the were you that kind of kid?
- 20:31Speaker 4: Did you have the shiny shoes and the suit and
- 20:33Speaker 4: everything in five or six?
- 20:34Speaker 14: Yeah?
- 20:35Speaker 7: I mean so for me, I've always been a student
- 20:37Speaker 7: of politics. I think, as I said on this program
- 20:39Speaker 7: when I when I first came on my debut here
- 20:42Speaker 7: with the Voice of Charleston, you know, I said, I've
- 20:45Speaker 7: been following politics since I was a small child. The
- 20:47Speaker 7: two thousand election kind of kicked me off. So's it's
- 20:49Speaker 7: a subject that I've studied since I was a kid.
- 20:52Speaker 7: It's a subject that I got a degree in, It's
- 20:54Speaker 7: a discipline I got a degree in in college, and
- 20:56Speaker 7: it's something that I since I was a little kid,
- 20:59Speaker 7: have always known that I would come up at some
- 21:01Speaker 7: point and lead West Virginia into a better future, into
- 21:04Speaker 7: a future that we can be proud of a state
- 21:06Speaker 7: that we know, the state that we can be in,
- 21:09Speaker 7: a state that can thrive. Ultimately, what do.
- 21:12Speaker 4: I hear this a lot? And you kind of made
- 21:14Speaker 4: reference to it about some older politicians people have been
- 21:17Speaker 4: in service, and again it happens on both sides of
- 21:19Speaker 4: the isle. Obviously, Well, what do we do need to
- 21:21Speaker 4: do to get more young people in general, I'm not
- 21:23Speaker 4: even talking about Republicans, I'm not just in general, to
- 21:25Speaker 4: get more young people energized to want to be a
- 21:28Speaker 4: part of a change or part of a system.
- 21:31Speaker 7: So I think engaging people at a young age is
- 21:34Speaker 7: very important. You know, I started a young Republican club
- 21:35Speaker 7: at Elkins High School in the two thousand and eight
- 21:38Speaker 7: election cycle, and a tremendous amount of those people, while
- 21:41Speaker 7: not all of them went into politics, that they've gone
- 21:43Speaker 7: on to successful careers and other disciplines, and we have
- 21:47Speaker 7: to engage the youth today. We have to stand up.
- 21:49Speaker 7: As you know, we've continued to hemorrhage our young people.
- 21:52Speaker 7: We've continued to hemorrhage our population in this state. Two
- 21:55Speaker 7: generations of West Virginians are gone. We lead the nation
- 21:58Speaker 7: and drug overdose deaths per cap We have some terrible
- 22:02Speaker 7: economic and public health outcomes that happen here every year,
- 22:06Speaker 7: and we need to get to a point to where
- 22:08Speaker 7: we can bring hope to our people and inspire them
- 22:11Speaker 7: to stay here, to live here, to work here, to
- 22:13Speaker 7: play here, to start a business. I'd like to be able.
- 22:16Speaker 7: And one of the reasons I want to replace Senator
- 22:17Speaker 7: Capito is just look at the record. At this point,
- 22:20Speaker 7: twenty four years in federal office, West Virginia leads the
- 22:23Speaker 7: nation in drug overdose deaths per capita. We have a
- 22:25Speaker 7: failing economy, We lead the nation in childhood obesity. We
- 22:29Speaker 7: have the lowest workforce participation rate in the nation. And
- 22:33Speaker 7: we have to get change and we can't continue with
- 22:36Speaker 7: the same people.
- 22:38Speaker 4: But how does a US senator make this change?
- 22:41Speaker 7: Is Alex Well, it's about inspiring. So it's not you
- 22:44Speaker 7: know a lot of people say, well, you're talking about
- 22:45Speaker 7: state very important whether you're in a federal office, as
- 22:48Speaker 7: a leader of the state, as a US senator, it's
- 22:50Speaker 7: very important that I keep an eye on my home
- 22:52Speaker 7: state and how it's doing in particular, and we can
- 22:55Speaker 7: address some of these problems at the federal level. When
- 22:57Speaker 7: it comes to the opioid crisis, the drug abuse, the
- 23:00Speaker 7: economic problems. We have young people continuing to flee. So
- 23:04Speaker 7: there are some things that we can do at the
- 23:05Speaker 7: federal level to address it, but ultimately, we need to
- 23:07Speaker 7: change the image of the state and we need to
- 23:09Speaker 7: get new people in positions.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Talking again to Alex gasrud who is going to be
- 23:14Speaker 4: a candidate for US sitting in twenty twenty six, why
- 23:19Speaker 4: the early start, I mean, why so early because we're
- 23:20Speaker 4: not even through I know you're also very involved in
- 23:23Speaker 4: some campaigns now or keep an eye on, but why
- 23:26Speaker 4: do you feel so early to get started now? It's
- 23:28Speaker 4: so important to get started now.
- 23:29Speaker 7: Well, you know, we got seventy five hundred votes in
- 23:31Speaker 7: the second congressional district in twenty four We were the
- 23:34Speaker 7: second choice for a lot of people in that race
- 23:36Speaker 7: if they weren't voting for their preferred candidate, and we
- 23:40Speaker 7: felt that it was important with this election coming up,
- 23:43Speaker 7: to take our message to all fifty five counties into
- 23:45Speaker 7: the southern part of the state and to get out early.
- 23:47Speaker 7: I'm not independently wealthy. My wife didn't put me in business.
- 23:51Speaker 7: I don't have a bunch of money sitting around, so
- 23:53Speaker 7: I can't run a race in a traditional way. I
- 23:56Speaker 7: have to start early. I have to start fundraising early.
- 23:59Speaker 7: I have to get the ground roots in the organization.
- 24:01Speaker 7: The volunteers all set up here very very early. And
- 24:04Speaker 7: Senator Capito, as we know, is a very powerful person.
- 24:07Speaker 7: She's fourth soon to be fourth and Senate leadership. She
- 24:10Speaker 7: will have no problem raising more funds if necessary, and
- 24:14Speaker 7: she'll be a very formidable opponent. But she is in
- 24:17Speaker 7: a lot of trouble right now. We're going to be
- 24:18Speaker 7: in a closed primary in twenty six.
- 24:20Speaker 4: You think that'll stay. I mean, I know what the
- 24:23Speaker 4: rules are now, but I've also heard some rumblings that
- 24:25Speaker 4: it may not be a closed primary.
- 24:26Speaker 7: In twenty two. Well, I'm sure she's going to work
- 24:28Speaker 7: extremely hard to open them back up, because it will
- 24:30Speaker 7: be difficult for any Republican in the state currently, no
- 24:33Speaker 7: matter what their profile, their name, ID, or their ability
- 24:35Speaker 7: is to especially for true conservatives like myself, to allow
- 24:40Speaker 7: independence and non affiliates to come into the Republican Party
- 24:44Speaker 7: and pick our leaders for the general election. I don't
- 24:47Speaker 7: think is right, and the Republican Party has decided that
- 24:50Speaker 7: they don't think it's right, and the party voted that way.
- 24:53Speaker 7: And I'm calling people daily. You know, I've had a
- 24:56Speaker 7: lot of calls. People don't even know who I am,
- 24:57Speaker 7: and they're excited I'm running against her because they know
- 24:59Speaker 7: they don't want her anymore. And we have to we
- 25:02Speaker 7: have to continue forward with this fight all the way
- 25:06Speaker 7: to the end. So getting out early before this cycle
- 25:08Speaker 7: is even over is paramount to our messaging.

- 25:26Speaker 4: getting the right coverages and prices to protect your business
- 25:29Speaker 4: from more visits. Brightwaymaids dot Com. Let's take a look
- 25:31Speaker 4: at some there's been some economic news in West Virginia,
- 25:33Speaker 4: and I talked to several people on the show about this,
- 25:36Speaker 4: about some positive economic news. You know, we've got new Core,
- 25:39Speaker 4: We've got Berkshire Hathaway, We've got the green facility there
- 25:43Speaker 4: in South Charleston, and it seems like, and I understand
- 25:46Speaker 4: and talking to some of the folks in economic development front,
- 25:49Speaker 4: that even more big announcements are coming. That's all well
- 25:51Speaker 4: and good. And I live in an area that's doing
- 25:54Speaker 4: pretty well in Tay's Valley, Eastern Panhandle's doing pretty well.
- 25:57Speaker 4: But you go to some other areas, more rural areas
- 26:00Speaker 4: down to places like McDowell County, Mingo County, not so much.
- 26:04Speaker 4: How if elected senator, how do we we got all
- 26:07Speaker 4: these good things are happening to West Virginia. How do
- 26:09Speaker 4: we get that to go everywhere in the state?
- 26:11Speaker 7: Though, Yeah, so there's a lot of people right now.
- 26:13Speaker 7: I think in West Virginia, some people that you are
- 26:16Speaker 7: in political positions that think parts of the state are
- 26:18Speaker 7: not salvageable. So we're going to focus on the parts
- 26:21Speaker 7: of the state that are doing well and try to
- 26:22Speaker 7: promote that. That's not a strategy I take. There's the
- 26:25Speaker 7: problems we have in the northern part of the state
- 26:27Speaker 7: are the same problems we have in the southern part
- 26:29Speaker 7: of the state. Some of the problems in the panhandles
- 26:31Speaker 7: are a little different than the interior, but overall we're
- 26:33Speaker 7: dealing with the same problems overall. So we have to
- 26:37Speaker 7: put together a solution and a strategy at the federal
- 26:41Speaker 7: level at the state level to continue to try to
- 26:43Speaker 7: attract business. But I hate to say, all of these
- 26:46Speaker 7: economic developments that we see, if we don't get our
- 26:49Speaker 7: workforce to the level that it needs to be, a
- 26:51Speaker 7: lot of these taxpayer funded opportunities that West Virginia has
- 26:56Speaker 7: been able to make happen here recently could decline and
- 27:00Speaker 7: could go away. So it's so important now that we
- 27:02Speaker 7: fix the education system. It's so important now that we
- 27:05Speaker 7: fix our education system at the state level to where
- 27:08Speaker 7: we get more vocational more equipment operators, more electricians, more HVAC.
- 27:12Speaker 7: We got to get people that have an idea what
- 27:14Speaker 7: they want to do and have a little bit of
- 27:16Speaker 7: skill set before we just kick him out at eighteen
- 27:18Speaker 7: and they don't know anything.
- 27:20Speaker 4: Let's talk about let's get away from your race for
- 27:22Speaker 4: a moment and let's take a look at maybe at
- 27:24Speaker 4: the governor's race or the Senate race. Is there any
- 27:27Speaker 4: way any way possible that Steve Williams beats Patrick Morrissey
- 27:33Speaker 4: or the Glenn Elliet beats Jim Justice.
- 27:35Speaker 7: There is zero percent chance that Glenn Elliott beats Jim Justice.
- 27:40Speaker 7: Jim Justice is a political Leviathan like I have never
- 27:44Speaker 7: seen in West Virginia politics. He is definitely probably the
- 27:49Speaker 7: most successful governor that I've seen in my lifetime and
- 27:52Speaker 7: will go down as one of the most prolific politicians
- 27:54Speaker 7: I think in current West Virginia history. Although I don't
- 27:57Speaker 7: believe he's a conservative and I disagree with a lot
- 27:59Speaker 7: of a lot of things that he did, but the
- 28:01Speaker 7: Democrats have just no chance in this state. And Glenn
- 28:05Speaker 7: Elliott I was very surprised that he decided to adopt
- 28:07Speaker 7: a Robert see Bird embracing strategy. I'm not sure how
- 28:11Speaker 7: Bird helps him in his race. So there's no chance
- 28:14Speaker 7: there for Elliot. He's run a hard campaign, but he's
- 28:17Speaker 7: got just question is how big of a margin is
- 28:19Speaker 7: he going to lose.
- 28:20Speaker 4: Pot It's just kind of where we are right now.
- 28:22Speaker 4: It's a state.
- 28:22Speaker 7: Has he worked hard enough to get twenty percent of
- 28:25Speaker 7: the vote. I don't know.
- 28:26Speaker 4: Well, yeah, I'll say this about Glenn Elliott. He's out
- 28:28Speaker 4: there working, but I don't know necessarily that that's going
- 28:31Speaker 4: to do a whole lot of good because it's just
- 28:33Speaker 4: where we are right now. That's not a negative a
- 28:35Speaker 4: jab at Glen Elliott or Steve Williams. I mean, they're
- 28:38Speaker 4: both good people, but it's just where we are right now.
- 28:41Speaker 15: Man.
- 28:41Speaker 4: And at somebody of your age, you may not. I mean,
- 28:43Speaker 4: I know you studied politics. I could probably ask you
- 28:45Speaker 4: a question about, you know, the election in eighteen eighty
- 28:47Speaker 4: and you'd be able to tell me. But it's just
- 28:50Speaker 4: where we are right now. And I'm somebody that remembers
- 28:52Speaker 4: and comes from a highly democratic area. Eighty three years
- 28:55Speaker 4: the Democrats were in charge of the state and it's
- 28:59Speaker 4: just been a around and a different mindset on behalf
- 29:02Speaker 4: of the voters. Like I think it's going to be
- 29:04Speaker 4: studied years and years and years from now by historians
- 29:08Speaker 4: outside West Virginia. Why this sudden change.
- 29:10Speaker 7: Yeah, Steve Williams race, real quick, I'll say what I'm
- 29:14Speaker 7: looking for in that governor's race is a couple of things.
- 29:16Speaker 7: I want to see how well Morrissey performs. How well
- 29:19Speaker 7: does he do? Does Marshall we s Wilson get some
- 29:22Speaker 7: of the anti Morrissey vote when there's a lot of
- 29:25Speaker 7: it out there when you talk about Capitol, Miller and
- 29:27Speaker 7: Miller and Warner people. Also does Erica Kalinitch the Libertarian candidate?
- 29:32Speaker 7: Does she outperform?
- 29:33Speaker 15: You know?
- 29:33Speaker 7: Does she get more than one or two percent? How
- 29:36Speaker 7: strong does Morrissey go in? How clear is his mandate
- 29:39Speaker 7: ultimately to govern in this five person race. That's what
- 29:42Speaker 7: I'm looking for is does Morrissey run weaker than expected
- 29:44Speaker 7: this governor's race? That's the only thing to really watch.
- 29:47Speaker 7: Nobody else has a chance to be Patrick.
- 29:49Speaker 4: So from today forward, let's take on today's date October
- 29:54Speaker 4: tenth through the primary May twenty twenty six. What does
- 29:57Speaker 4: that look like for you in this race against Shelley
- 29:59Speaker 4: more Capital. I mean, you do. You're trying to raise
- 30:02Speaker 4: some money.
- 30:03Speaker 7: I know that we're not going to get to the
- 30:05Speaker 7: United States Center with zero dollars. I need people to
- 30:07Speaker 7: go to gasserud four WV dot com and donate a
- 30:10Speaker 7: dollar five dollars. I need people that can volunteer, old, young,
- 30:14Speaker 7: middle aged. I want to build a coalition of coal miners,
- 30:18Speaker 7: of contractors, of service workers, state workers, you name it.
- 30:23Speaker 7: I need everybody to get involved in this race so
- 30:26Speaker 7: we can change West Virginia for the better. But what
- 30:30Speaker 7: this race is going to look like for me is
- 30:31Speaker 7: getting on the phone, making lots of calls, going to DC,
- 30:34Speaker 7: trying to raise money and taking money from people that
- 30:38Speaker 7: I'm going to be able to take money from. I'm
- 30:40Speaker 7: not taking money from people I don't want, you know,
- 30:41Speaker 7: I don't agree with their philosophy or their politics. And
- 30:45Speaker 7: it's going to be traveling around. I'm going to Mercer
- 30:47Speaker 7: County today. We're headed there to speak to a Republican
- 30:49Speaker 7: Executive Committee. I'm going to see some of the storm
- 30:52Speaker 7: issues down there as well and connect with people in
- 30:53Speaker 7: Mercer County, and we're going to do a lot of that.
- 30:55Speaker 7: We're going to get in our vehicle and we're going
- 30:57Speaker 7: to travel county by county, all fifty five counties, and
- 30:59Speaker 7: we're going to meet up everybody. We're gonna flash campaign.
- 31:01Speaker 7: I learned a lot my first race in that second
- 31:04Speaker 7: congressional district, and I really have a more comprehensive plan
- 31:08Speaker 7: now to get elected. My name idea is strong in
- 31:10Speaker 7: the northern part of the state, not known in the
- 31:12Speaker 7: southern part of the state. That's why we're starting early.
- 31:14Speaker 7: That's why we're headed too important counties like Mercer. That's
- 31:17Speaker 7: why we're on probably one of the most important counties
- 31:19Speaker 7: in the election in the closed primary of twenty twenty six,
- 31:22Speaker 7: which is Canawa County. This is a place where I'm
- 31:24Speaker 7: going to have to do very well to beat Senator Capitol.
- 31:27Speaker 7: So I hope you can bring me on your show
- 31:28Speaker 7: some more.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Absolutely, wish you the best of luck. Man. Thanks a lot, Hey, Dave,
- 31:32Speaker 4: thanks for having me.
- 31:32Speaker 7: You have a great day.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Thank you as well. Alex gasserot again. He is a

- 35:30Speaker 4: Is a gas route a MAGA stopped to steal Republican

- 35:40Speaker 4: wish I could vote for you in the primary, But
- 35:41Speaker 4: the West Virginia MAGA Republicans don't want outsiders voting in
- 35:45Speaker 4: their primary. Tex says he sounds like someone who would
- 35:48Speaker 4: reduce or eliminate FEMA funding, and workers text says he
- 35:52Speaker 4: sounds unhinged. It would be dumb to get rid of
- 35:55Speaker 4: Shelley for someone who votes just like her but won't
- 35:57Speaker 4: have the tenure she does. However, there's a chance, because
- 35:59Speaker 4: making some decisions is what West Virginia voters do best.
- 36:07Speaker 4: Tex says this Conservatives, as used by Alex g means

- 36:20Speaker 4: to take care of what? Does care to tell us
- 36:23Speaker 4: about the national GOP? Did it grow or decline? And
- 36:26Speaker 4: how does our GP compared to the Roman Empire? It's
- 36:28Speaker 4: just silly stuff, Tex, I can't read that, Texas, Dave.
- 36:35Speaker 4: I love your Kentucky Headhunters. My dad was a milkman.
- 36:39Speaker 4: The lead song there, yeah real quick on that big
- 36:42Speaker 4: million Iicley's here, big Kentucky head Hunters fan. No I
- 36:47Speaker 4: had a idea that that was going to be the answer,
- 36:50Speaker 4: But you know, they've been around a while. And the thing,
- 36:53Speaker 4: the cool thing about the Kentucky head hunters. Is they
- 36:55Speaker 4: didn't really get discovered untill they were all in their forties.
- 36:57Speaker 4: Now they're all in their like seventies and eighties, and
- 36:58Speaker 4: they're still out.
- 36:59Speaker 8: There with not a hater.
- 37:00Speaker 7: Look, not a hater.
- 37:01Speaker 4: You're just not a knower.
- 37:02Speaker 15: No.

- 37:13Speaker 7: That voice you hear is a million.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Iic Ley from West Virginia. Watch how are you?
- 37:17Speaker 15: I'm good? How are you this morning?
- 37:18Speaker 4: I'm doing fine. So the special session ended late Tuesday night,
- 37:22Speaker 4: and the big takeaway for a lot of people is
- 37:24Speaker 4: a compromise that was reached in the governor's proposed tax
- 37:27Speaker 4: plan five percent to two percent. But I know that
- 37:29Speaker 4: you were looking at a lot of other things other
- 37:31Speaker 4: than just taxes. How you're focused on that, but some
- 37:33Speaker 4: other things when they usually do involve children.
- 37:36Speaker 15: Yes, I was watching a child and dependent care tax
- 37:40Speaker 15: credit which did pass. This is gonna be for families
- 37:43Speaker 15: who are already receiving the federal version of Child and
- 37:47Speaker 15: Dependent Care tax credit, which did pass. This is gonna
- 37:50Speaker 15: be for families who are already receiving the federal version
- 37:53Speaker 15: of this tax credit. They're already paying for childcare. Now
- 37:56Speaker 15: they can get fifty percent of that back through a
- 37:58Speaker 15: state level program. It's about two hundred dollars on average
- 38:02Speaker 15: for West Virginia families, maybe three hundred, which many lawmakers
- 38:06Speaker 15: noted is not even what it costs for a week
- 38:08Speaker 15: of childcare, but it is something and the governor was
- 38:11Speaker 15: excited about that. I asked him yesterday why he didn't
- 38:14Speaker 15: include other childcare bills, and he said, you know, we
- 38:17Speaker 15: just got to make it a priority. I thought this
- 38:20Speaker 15: was the time maybe we can make it a priority.
- 38:22Speaker 15: But that was a thing that got through, and he
- 38:25Speaker 15: was very excited about it and said it's a good start.
- 38:28Speaker 4: I had definitely get Kaylee Young on Tuesday show that
- 38:31Speaker 4: was right after a late night on Monday, and then
- 38:34Speaker 4: had her on live from the Capitol, and although she
- 38:37Speaker 4: wasn't totally thrilled with everything the legislature did during the session,
- 38:40Speaker 4: she did think it was a good start. Would you
- 38:42Speaker 4: categorize it that way.
- 38:43Speaker 8: Yeah, I think so.
- 38:44Speaker 15: I mean, anytime I think lawmakers are going to say
- 38:46Speaker 15: and him, we can give money back to working families,
- 38:48Speaker 15: that's a good thing. So yeah, it's a good start.
- 38:51Speaker 15: I think the key thing to note though, is that
- 38:53Speaker 15: that doesn't help the providers who are closing their doors.
- 38:57Speaker 15: I'm not sure if you talked on your show about
- 38:59Speaker 15: even By Center Preschool here in Kennaught County. They are
- 39:02Speaker 15: shutting their hurts, the two room and that you know,
- 39:06Speaker 15: that's a significant loss for this area.
- 39:08Speaker 14: Right.
- 39:08Speaker 15: So while it's great to see money going back to families,
- 39:12Speaker 15: it's not solving providers financial situations. And these are families
- 39:16Speaker 15: already paying for childcare, so it's not going to get
- 39:18Speaker 15: more families into that market.
- 39:21Speaker 4: And this is something, as I said, you write about
- 39:23Speaker 4: a variety of different things, and I'll give you time
- 39:25Speaker 4: to plug that a little bit later on. You cover
- 39:26Speaker 4: a lot of different things, but this is something that
- 39:29Speaker 4: you have kind of focused on a whole lot, and
- 39:31Speaker 4: it's just child issues in general in West Virginia.
- 39:34Speaker 15: Yeah, it's really important to me. You know, I'm also
- 39:36Speaker 15: a mother, so I think it's personal to me now too.
- 39:38Speaker 15: But I have been able to see throughout my career
- 39:41Speaker 15: and over the last ten years that decisions that are
- 39:44Speaker 15: made at the Capitol directly affect children, and they truly
- 39:47Speaker 15: affect our most vulnerable children. And we have, you know,
- 39:50Speaker 15: six thousand kids in foster care. We have thousands of
- 39:53Speaker 15: homeless students in West Virginia, so many kids being raised
- 39:56Speaker 15: by grandparents. I think all of us know someone who
- 39:58Speaker 15: is raising their grandchild, right, So this is not a
- 40:01Speaker 15: small percentage of West Virginia children. So for me, that
- 40:04Speaker 15: accountability focus on how we are caring for vulnerable children
- 40:08Speaker 15: is really important to me. And circling back to the
- 40:10Speaker 15: tax cut, that forty six million dollar price tag for
- 40:14Speaker 15: that two percent additional tax cut is going to be
- 40:17Speaker 15: paid for by what we were told is extra money
- 40:20Speaker 15: from the health departments, the three new health departments budgets.
- 40:24Speaker 15: Now lawmakers are saying that is extra money. But I asked,
- 40:28Speaker 15: multiple times, can you tell me exactly where this money
- 40:31Speaker 15: is coming from? What we see any cuts? And no
- 40:34Speaker 15: one could give that one hundred percent a surety, And
- 40:36Speaker 15: the health departments didn't respond to my emails. And so
- 40:39Speaker 15: those are the departments that oversee child protective services and
- 40:42Speaker 15: foster Care, and that led several Democrats to vote against
- 40:45Speaker 15: that tax cut because they said, I don't feel comfortable
- 40:48Speaker 15: taking money away from the programs that oversee potentially taking
- 40:52Speaker 15: money from these really important programs for children.
- 40:55Speaker 4: And again, when you see these stories and these headlines,
- 40:58Speaker 4: I know you've covered them, and you and I talked
- 41:00Speaker 4: about on the show in the past, and you see
- 41:01Speaker 4: these stories about you know, the situation down in Boone County,
- 41:04Speaker 4: the tragic story with the young girl there, and then
- 41:06Speaker 4: you see the ones in Cistonville, and there are just
- 41:08Speaker 4: so many others and that's just what we know about.
- 41:10Speaker 4: We don't know about the ones that haven't come to
- 41:13Speaker 4: surface yet, that are happening as we speak right now. Sadly,
- 41:16Speaker 4: we see all these things and it looks like and
- 41:18Speaker 4: there's always finger pointing going around, but it looks like
- 41:21Speaker 4: that a lot of these things could have been discovered
- 41:25Speaker 4: much easier if we had that. And I'm not this
- 41:27Speaker 4: is not a knock against the workers. I'm just saying
- 41:29Speaker 4: if we had enough people in those positions, if we
- 41:31Speaker 4: paid them more to be able to do this, because
- 41:35Speaker 4: you can't, in my opinion, and this is just based
- 41:38Speaker 4: this is totally my opinion, you can't run the things
- 41:41Speaker 4: in twenty twenty four the way that you did with
- 41:44Speaker 4: the same number of people, even with less of a
- 41:47Speaker 4: population as you did in nineteen seventy six. I mean,
- 41:49Speaker 4: because it's a totally different world about there. And I
- 41:52Speaker 4: have told the story before. My parents divorced when I
- 41:56Speaker 4: was five. Okay, Luckily I had had good I had
- 41:58Speaker 4: good family members on both sides, you know, and I
- 42:01Speaker 4: didn't get too much out of line. But I was
- 42:03Speaker 4: like the only kid in my grade school class whose
- 42:04Speaker 4: parents were even divorced. Okay, now we've kind of flipped that.
- 42:09Speaker 4: And you mentioned the number of grandparents that are raising
- 42:11Speaker 4: kids a number of homeless kids, and homeless doesn't necessarily
- 42:15Speaker 4: have to be I'm living under a bridge. Homeless can be.
- 42:18Speaker 4: I'm going from couch to couch, I'm saving with you know,
- 42:20Speaker 4: I'm staying with my friend tonight, and I'm saying my
- 42:23Speaker 4: grandmother and I that constitutes homeless. My point in all
- 42:25Speaker 4: this is to say, we just got a whole lot
- 42:27Speaker 4: more issues now than what we did. In my opinion,
- 42:30Speaker 4: we can't address them the way we did in years past.
- 42:32Speaker 15: Yeah, and we're seeing that spill over to our education outcomes, right, Like,
- 42:36Speaker 15: one of the major education bills this past regular session
- 42:39Speaker 15: that didn't pass was about student discipline, and lawmakers who
- 42:42Speaker 15: are also public school teachers were very clear, We're not
- 42:45Speaker 15: saying that kids are worse or not behaving as well
- 42:49Speaker 15: as they did twenty years ago. The problem is so
- 42:51Speaker 15: many kids are coming into our classrooms with extreme trauma.
- 42:55Speaker 4: Right, trauma that a lot of people can't even imagine
- 42:59Speaker 4: these kids deal with you.
- 43:00Speaker 15: Yeah, and our child poverty rate is at twenty five percent.
- 43:03Speaker 15: We have students who go home that don't have food
- 43:05Speaker 15: at home, right, So there are a lot of issues
- 43:08Speaker 15: from our child welfare system that are directly spilling over
- 43:10Speaker 15: to other parts of our government.
- 43:12Speaker 4: For sure. What other stories are you looking on beyond
- 43:15Speaker 4: the special session? I think I'm going to finally put
- 43:17Speaker 4: the special session to rest. But what's over the next
- 43:19Speaker 4: couple of months, what are you gonna be looking at?
- 43:21Speaker 15: Well, I am really looking into I'm continuing to look
- 43:24Speaker 15: into foster care, of course, and one of the things
- 43:26Speaker 15: I'm focused on right now is just the number of
- 43:28Speaker 15: foster kids who are staying in hotels and temporary shelters.
- 43:30Speaker 15: It has been a struggle to get that information but
- 43:33Speaker 15: I have been contacted more than usual from people about
- 43:38Speaker 15: children in hotels. In fact, I got an interesting email
- 43:41Speaker 15: from someone who was on vacation in West Virginia and
- 43:44Speaker 15: noticed some teens walking around a hotel and just felt
- 43:48Speaker 15: like something was off and talked to them, and it
- 43:49Speaker 15: was a group of foster kids, and so they reached
- 43:52Speaker 15: out to me and said, you know, I'm kind of
- 43:53Speaker 15: concerned about what was going on here. And so anyway,
- 43:55Speaker 15: all that to say, that's something I'm looking into. And
- 43:57Speaker 15: I think also just watching education this year, you know,
- 44:00Speaker 15: our schools are taking a financial hit because those COVID
- 44:03Speaker 15: dollars are waning, They're going away. We've got kids leaving
- 44:07Speaker 15: public schools for Hope scholarship, and it just seems like
- 44:11Speaker 15: every time I look at local news headlines, they're talking
- 44:13Speaker 15: about how their local counties are struggling to have enough
- 44:16Speaker 15: teachers and pay their bills.
- 44:18Speaker 4: And speaking of which, I'll after I let you go,
- 44:20Speaker 4: I'm going to come back from the break and I'm
- 44:21Speaker 4: going to talk a little bit about the the We
- 44:23Speaker 4: had a second night of hearings last night on consolidation
- 44:26Speaker 4: and closing schools. This one was the McKinley Middle School
- 44:29Speaker 4: in St. Albans and the decision was made by the
- 44:31Speaker 4: board to shutter that school and consolidate it with Hayes.
- 44:34Speaker 4: I think it is five to nothing. That was the
- 44:37Speaker 4: way the board went. And these board members are really,
- 44:40Speaker 4: really in a bad situation because if you look at it,
- 44:44Speaker 4: nobody wants their community school closed. However, the buildings are
- 44:49Speaker 4: in many cases in bad condition. It takes more to
- 44:51Speaker 4: operate them than their worth, and the kids just aren't there.
- 44:54Speaker 4: And it's and the problem is is that people It's
- 44:57Speaker 4: not just population drain, it's that parents are choosing alternative
- 45:02Speaker 4: ways of educating their kids.
- 45:03Speaker 15: Yeah, and if we could circle back to special session
- 45:05Speaker 15: real quick. I don't know if you talked about this yet,
- 45:07Speaker 15: but one of the I think one of the more
- 45:10Speaker 15: significant bills from the special session that maybe hasn't gotten
- 45:13Speaker 15: as must coverage is that lawmakers approved a bill that
- 45:16Speaker 15: would allow charter schools, which are public schools in West Virginia,
- 45:19Speaker 15: but it would allow charter schools to access School Building
- 45:22Speaker 15: Authority funds they can now apply for them to start
- 45:25Speaker 15: their brick and mortar schools. And then lawmakers put five
- 45:27Speaker 15: million dollars in that budget for charter schools to access.
- 45:30Speaker 15: So when you talk about declining schools, schools that need repairs,
- 45:36Speaker 15: that's part of the reason they are closing these schools.
- 45:38Speaker 15: And now charter schools are allowed to access that money.
- 45:40Speaker 15: That definitely was a point of contention for the Teachers'
- 45:43Speaker 15: Union and other people as that bill passed on Tuesday.
- 45:46Speaker 4: Million nicely. I appreciate you being there. Remind folks where

- 50:05Speaker 4: As expected, the Board of Education Knawh County of References
- 50:09Speaker 4: earlier voted five to nothing to close McKinley Middle School.
- 50:12Speaker 4: McKinley now will now consolidate with Hayes Middle School. Overall
- 50:15Speaker 4: plan is to shut down six schools in Kanaw County
- 50:18Speaker 4: due to declining enrollment and budget concerns. Other four schools
- 50:21Speaker 4: that the board will vote on are Mary Ingles Elementary,
- 50:23Speaker 4: Malden Elementary, Bell and also Middland Trail Elementary. Those hearings
- 50:27Speaker 4: are coming over the next couple of weeks, you know,
- 50:29Speaker 4: and as I said, it's never easy. These things happen.
- 50:32Speaker 4: No one wants it to their local schools, but it's
- 50:34Speaker 4: a fact of life. Declining enrollment, rising cost to keep
- 50:38Speaker 4: these schools running, it's what's going to happen. It's rough,
- 50:42Speaker 4: it is what it is. I know there's some very
- 50:44Speaker 4: impassioned speeches that have been out there on the school closures,
- 50:49Speaker 4: and that's that's what it's all about, you know, the
- 50:50Speaker 4: public speaking in their mind. But in the end, I
- 50:52Speaker 4: don't think anybody's surprised by the decisions that were made.
- 50:59Speaker 4: Trix says Flat budgets will magically fix the childcare issues,
- 51:02Speaker 4: so will bootstraps to a texture talking about school building maintenance,
- 51:07Speaker 4: I don't think people understand the amount of money needed
- 51:09Speaker 4: to update these facilities, says a text. We're trying to
- 51:11Speaker 4: run twenty first century schools on nineteen forties to nineteen
- 51:15Speaker 4: seventies infrastructure. Some of these main electric breakers are upwards
- 51:18Speaker 4: of fifty thousand dollars because they're so old. A financial
- 51:21Speaker 4: reconing is coming for these old schools, and the state
- 51:23Speaker 4: needs to prepare, says a Texture. All right, so Hoppy
