- 0:00While most people are quite insulated from direct
- 0:03confrontation with extremes which the body is asked to
- 0:06endure, our modern media makes it possible to see and relate to
- 0:11some of these extreme situations.
- 0:15Far beyond the pressure of training for and running in a
- 0:18marathon race. There are circumstances, some of
- 0:22them voluntary, many of them involuntary, which expose us to
- 0:27the powers of the body to withstand what can only be
- 0:30called extreme suffering with a will to live and endure.
- 0:35That beggars the imagination. We see both the capacity of the
- 0:39physical body under severe pressures as well as its
- 0:43enormous pleiancy and goodwill to provide a solid base for the
- 0:47will to live which inhabits every being.
- 0:53When the concentration camps were opened up after the end of
- 0:56World War 2, we witnessed many thousands of individuals
- 1:00emaciated to the point of starvation.
- 1:04When villages in Vietnam were bombed with napalm during the
- 1:07Vietnam War, we were able to view the extreme pain and
- 1:12suffering of people who had lived through that horrible
- 1:15experience of having their skin burned alive.
- 1:21We have heard the stories of survivors of the atomic blasts
- 1:25that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in World War 2.
- 1:30When we observe the mass migrations, the droughts, the
- 1:34starvation and the ravages of disease and warfare in other
- 1:38parts of the world, we see that millions of people are subjected
- 1:43to extremes that cause excruciating pain and yet they
- 1:48somehow survive and try to go on with their lives on a day-to-day
- 1:55level. We have been advised that the
- 1:57pain experienced by women in childbirth can be far higher
- 2:00than any other pain that we normally experience.
- 2:04This is part of our normal human life on a regular basis, and for
- 2:09those who have not undergone this experience in all its
- 2:12intensity, it is truly impossible to imagine.
- 2:18We may reflect on the body's endurance to pain and suffering
- 2:21and ask how it is that it is able to take this on, survive
- 2:26and continue to desire to live and breathe.
- 2:31The Titaria Upanishad provides us an enigmatic answer.
- 2:35Quote. For who could labour to draw in
- 2:39the breath, or who could have strength to breathe it out, if
- 2:44there were not that bliss in the heaven of his heart, the ether
- 2:49within his being? End Quote.
- 2:53It may not appear that there is any sense of that bliss about
- 2:57which the Upanishad speaks in any of the experiences related
- 3:02above, but somehow, deep within each being there is that secret
- 3:08space where bliss dwells, covered over by pain, covered
- 3:13over by suffering, covered over by all the stress of living, but
- 3:18nevertheless there waiting to come forward and transform the
- 3:23life. The surface being may not
- 3:26consciously recognize or appreciate this hidden source of
- 3:29the will to live, but nevertheless it endures.
- 3:33This is what keeps people alive and hoping to survive under
- 3:37extreme circumstances and in intense pain.
- 3:43The mother writes in The Science of Living in Uneducation, quote.
- 3:49The body has a remarkable capacity of adaptation and
- 3:52endurance. It is fit to do so many more
- 3:55things than one can usually imagine.
- 3:58If, instead of the ignorant and despotic masters that govern it,
- 4:03it is ruled by the central truth of the being, one will be
- 4:07surprised at what it is capable of doing.
- 4:10End Quote. The mother clarifies further.
- 4:14Quote. During the last war it was
- 4:17proved that the body was capable of enduring such suffering as is
- 4:21normally impossible to endure. You have surely read or heard
- 4:25these stories of war in which the body was made to suffer and
- 4:29endure terrible things, and it withstood all that.
- 4:33It proved that it had almost inexhaustible capacities of
- 4:37endurance. Some people happen to be under
- 4:41conditions that should have killed them.
- 4:43If they survived, it was because they had in them a very strong
- 4:48will to survive, and the body obeyed.
- 4:51That will End Quote reference Srioro Bindu and the Mother
