- 0:00Speaker 1: Football Court powered by the Inside of the Birds podcast,
- 0:02Speaker 1: which you can get on all podcasting platforms, and it
- 0:05Speaker 1: is brought to you today by our friends at the
- 0:07Speaker 1: Fanatics Sportsbook at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Some
- 0:11Speaker 1: Eagles news, The trade deadline has come and gone. AJ
- 0:16Speaker 1: Brown is still here, surprise. Adam Schefter tweeted that out
- 0:21Speaker 1: a couple of moments ago that oh, he did not
- 0:24Speaker 1: get traded and the trade deadline has passed.
- 0:27Speaker 2: But some news with the Eagles. Nolan Smith.
- 0:30Speaker 1: The practice window on him is open, so he will
- 0:34Speaker 1: be back at practice. I guess they will practice on
- 0:37Speaker 1: Thursday this week since they have a Monday night football game.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But the Eagles tweeted out just two minutes ago it's
- 0:44Speaker 1: been the practice window for Nolan Smith and released Patrick
- 0:46Speaker 1: Johnson from the active roster and Terrence Marshall from the
- 0:51Speaker 1: practice squad. So no Patrick Johnson. We knew there would
- 0:55Speaker 1: be an odd man out. Looks like Patrick Johnson is
- 0:57Speaker 1: that guy. As we bring in Adam Kaplan from the
- 0:59Speaker 1: Inside the Birds podcast right as the trade deadline strikes
- 1:03Speaker 1: midnight four oh two, Where are you today, Adam Kaplan? Well,
- 1:07Speaker 1: the Eagles no more trades. They did three moves last week.
- 1:11Speaker 1: We'll get into them now. How are you, sir, I'm
- 1:14Speaker 1: good man.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Yeah, you know. It's just so funny, Mike that and
- 1:16Speaker 3: it's typical of the way it happens some fresh sports.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We see. This's the NBA, Like, you've got what I
- 1:21Speaker 3: would call a middling trade deadline moves until today. It
- 1:27Speaker 3: went wild around the NFL, a lot of blockbuster trades, Mike,
- 1:31Speaker 3: the Cowboys, And what I'm gonna explain is, Mike, what
- 1:34Speaker 3: happens is teams don't like to show their hand in
- 1:37Speaker 3: terms of making a great offer, their best offer until
- 1:39Speaker 3: they have to. And that's why you see a lot
- 1:42Speaker 3: of deals go down the last day. Mike. It was
- 1:45Speaker 3: and part of it is, Mike, sometimes they have to realize,
- 1:49Speaker 3: like the Cowboys totally missed the Mazzie Smith the first
- 1:52Speaker 3: round of from two years ago, and they threw the
- 1:54Speaker 3: challeng They actually almost cut them until before the season started,
- 1:57Speaker 3: but they throw them in the Quinn and Williams trade,
- 1:59Speaker 3: and that's what happened to It was definitely a wild
- 2:02Speaker 3: day in the NFL, no question about it.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It was uh and the Eagles got out ahead of it.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So let's get into a couple of things here, Adam Kaplan.
- 2:08Speaker 1: The big move they made was yesterday morning. Obviously they
- 2:11Speaker 1: get Jalen Phillips. This is the guy who played with
- 2:13Speaker 1: Vic Fangio, has had some injury issues. Does he kind
- 2:17Speaker 1: of put this defense on another level? Is this exactly
- 2:20Speaker 1: what they needed?
- 2:22Speaker 3: They did? Look, we knew Nolan Slips gonna come back
- 2:25Speaker 3: in November, we just didn't know it could potentially potentially
- 2:28Speaker 3: be this week. Well, got to get through it. You know,
- 2:30Speaker 3: he's twenty one day window. By the way, includes the weekend,
- 2:33Speaker 3: I'm told, so you gotta see and they're gonna have
- 2:37Speaker 3: you know that he was in yesterday's meeting. We'll see
- 2:40Speaker 3: what happens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday's practice and the
- 2:42Speaker 3: Sunday walkthrough. By the way, from Monday night game, they
- 2:45Speaker 3: have until four pmmes from the day of the game.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It's a quirky rule. So he actually if he looks
- 2:51Speaker 3: great and he feels great, he could potentially play. So yeah, uh,
- 2:56Speaker 3: Jalen Phillips. Here's the deal with Jalen Phillips. You know
- 3:00Speaker 3: got over the issue that it happened in college and
- 3:02Speaker 3: the concussion issue. He took a year off football with
- 3:05Speaker 3: it's going to play again, decided to come back. He
- 3:09Speaker 3: finished career well. He did very well initially. As a
- 3:12Speaker 3: matter of fact, my people forget about this. He never
- 3:14Speaker 3: missed a game his first year of the Dolphins, twenty
- 3:18Speaker 3: three and twenty four back to back and one Achilles Stendon.
- 3:22Speaker 3: But he's healthy. He has got great size, great length,
- 3:28Speaker 3: and now a third round pick his second A pick
- 3:31Speaker 3: has a lot to give up for a guy an
- 3:33Speaker 3: expiring contract. But my understanding is if he plays well
- 3:38Speaker 3: days relatively healthy, definitely in the charts of trying to
- 3:41Speaker 3: bring him back, but he's got to play well. And
- 3:44Speaker 3: obviously Nolan smithsh's Nolan Smith's future and Jaye Ton plays
- 3:49Speaker 3: into this. But I like the trade. I thought it
- 3:51Speaker 3: was a smart move by Howie. There are other teams involved,
- 3:55Speaker 3: as you understand it, but they're able to get him.
- 3:57Speaker 3: This is certainly the best move of all of them,
- 3:59Speaker 3: at least on paper.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So how does this kind of affect everybody else here?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Like does Jalox Hunts his snaps kind of go down?
- 4:05Speaker 1: I mean, Nolan Smith his practice windows back. But when
- 4:08Speaker 1: everybody's healthy, how do you kind of see it all
- 4:11Speaker 1: kind of playing out? Now Patrick Johnson, by the way,
- 4:13Speaker 1: he got the released.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Yes he got yeah, he by the way, he is
- 4:16Speaker 3: subject to waivers. So what happens is now we are
- 4:20Speaker 3: now every player, even invested veterans, if they're release, they're
- 4:24Speaker 3: now subject to waivers. So if Patrick Johnson does not
- 4:27Speaker 3: get claimed, look for him to go to the practice squad.
- 4:30Speaker 3: Uh It basically, Mike is they'll have a four man rotation,
- 4:34Speaker 3: so typically interests four not five a thrushers. But Jason,
- 4:39Speaker 3: you really you try to have five hundred fifty three
- 4:41Speaker 3: man roster, So yeah, it's it's interesting, Mike. And don't
- 4:45Speaker 3: forget about josh Husha, who's done a nice job coming
- 4:48Speaker 3: off the bench. Ousha's going to be the I'm men out.
- 4:51Speaker 3: He'll be the four. So they have to work the
- 4:53Speaker 3: top three. Mike Ellis Philips is in there once they
- 4:57Speaker 3: get Smith back and see how his conditioning is. Don't
- 4:59Speaker 3: forget about BG, Mike, he's now on the roster.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Now.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Now here's the thing, we don't know exactly if BG's
- 5:06Speaker 3: got to get in the football shape. Digital shape is
- 5:08Speaker 3: not the same as physical shape is not football shape. Conditioning,
- 5:11Speaker 3: they got to see what that looks like. They did
- 5:13Speaker 3: see him before the buye. So it's it's you don't
- 5:17Speaker 3: usually play four guys, so to me, it's a three
- 5:21Speaker 3: man rotation. Then the fourth guy BG. If that's the
- 5:25Speaker 3: way it goes again, you got to look at how
- 5:26Speaker 3: everybody looks in practice. Phillips has got to start, Mike,
- 5:30Speaker 3: to answer your question, He's got to start. That's just
- 5:32Speaker 3: the way it is. You give a third round pick.
- 5:35Speaker 3: He could potentially be their best guy. But Vix got
- 5:37Speaker 3: to see him again. He has to coach him two
- 5:38Speaker 3: years ago. But Vick hasn't seen him since he's come
- 5:41Speaker 3: up with both injuries combined. So you got you gotta
- 5:44Speaker 3: see this how it looks. But BG, to me would
- 5:47Speaker 3: be sort of that fourth guy to answer your question
- 5:50Speaker 3: and play sporadically. But we got to see how they
- 5:53Speaker 3: look in practice. First.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Tell they might divvy up snaps. We'll see. Uh So,
- 5:57Speaker 2: Jaln Phillips is here good fit? You like that move?
- 6:00Speaker 1: Dr Alexander on Saturday? Anything left in the tank?
- 6:05Speaker 3: Well here's the thing, only twenty eight, Mike. You know
- 6:08Speaker 3: he had what I was told by one sources inconsistent
- 6:13Speaker 3: Kate production last year. Like sometimes he looked like the
- 6:17Speaker 3: old Alexander sometimes he looked like he was nursing that
- 6:20Speaker 3: bad knee, but he'd showed that he clearly had something left.
- 6:23Speaker 3: That's why there were multiple teams involved to trying to
- 6:26Speaker 3: sign It wasn't just Baltimore, but his tape was not
- 6:29Speaker 3: good this year. Think about this, Mike, This is how
- 6:32Speaker 3: bad it got for him. At Alexander and Baltimore. They
- 6:35Speaker 3: were down three cornered for one game. They wouldn't play him.
- 6:38Speaker 3: What does that tell you? Okay, what does that tell you?
- 6:41Speaker 3: I just gave you the answers to the text. They're
- 6:43Speaker 3: telling you they didn't want to play him, So the
- 6:46Speaker 3: Eagles gave up next to nothing for him. They're taking
- 6:48Speaker 3: a flyer. That's where that is.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not encouraging there at all.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I was gonna ask, is, so do you look at
- 6:55Speaker 1: Kaylee Ringo still being the best option there?
- 6:59Speaker 3: Kilely ring Know is involved, Ja Jay r Alexander is involved.
- 7:04Speaker 3: When Kareine Bennett gets added to the active roster, he'll
- 7:08Speaker 3: be involved. It's I don't want to call it a
- 7:11Speaker 3: tryout though it kind of is. Through practice.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Mike.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yeah, that's the only way that can evaluate them. There's
- 7:16Speaker 3: no one else no other way to do it. You
- 7:19Speaker 3: don't ever want to go with the committee at corner.
- 7:21Speaker 3: That's pathetic. I mean, now, now I get it. Joey
- 7:24Speaker 3: Jackson is still in the roster. What we know, he
- 7:28Speaker 3: may not be, Michael. They're gonna have to do something
- 7:31Speaker 3: once j Bennett is ready to go. You can't use
- 7:35Speaker 3: all of them. So they got to figure out that.
- 7:38Speaker 3: That's a practice decision with Fangio, Vic Fangio, Christian Parker,
- 7:42Speaker 3: and obviously Howie Roseman. But it's how he's called his
- 7:46Speaker 3: personnel control, so that one is to be determined. To me,
- 7:50Speaker 3: it's wide open, Mike. But there's a reason why they
- 7:53Speaker 3: brought in Bennett while they made a trade for Jile
- 7:56Speaker 3: JayR Alexander.
- 7:57Speaker 2: They do not want Carter, by the way, who's also here.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Well, Michael, Carter's not a Corner. He is a nickel
- 8:03Speaker 3: and a safety. As we told you last week, Mike,
- 8:06Speaker 3: I'm told they're definitely looking at Carter, who was a
- 8:08Speaker 3: safety at Duke, as a backup safety. Well, good, now,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you don't need it now, Degene. If they need him
- 8:17Speaker 3: at Corner, that'd be that would be because Bennett fails.
- 8:19Speaker 3: We know about Ringo and Alexander fails and that's then
- 8:23Speaker 3: they got to move to Gene to corner. They'd rather
- 8:26Speaker 3: not do that, Mike, answer your question right.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And obviously that would be shifting a lot of parts
- 8:31Speaker 1: around and moving Degene to the outside, putting a new
- 8:34Speaker 1: guy in here.
- 8:34Speaker 2: So we'll see how this all maps out Monday night.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Will Ringo be the first guy out in the field
- 8:40Speaker 1: or will they surprise and have you know, get Alexander,
- 8:43Speaker 1: you know, bounce back to the guy he was with
- 8:45Speaker 1: Christian Parker in Green Bay. So that's that you mentioned
- 8:50Speaker 1: the Dallas move. They trade a second round pick and
- 8:53Speaker 1: a first round pick. They had Quinnon Williams, who's twenty
- 8:56Speaker 1: seven years old, so three five and one good player.
- 9:01Speaker 1: But should they be trading first round picks to get
- 9:06Speaker 1: players now or should they be trying to build the team?
- 9:09Speaker 2: They're in a weird spot.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Well, here's the thing. Cordon Williams is still young. He
- 9:13Speaker 3: became a leader. After a very rough starting, some of
- 9:15Speaker 3: the immaturity with the Jets, he became a leader and
- 9:18Speaker 3: he's a really good football player. He does everything. Well,
- 9:21Speaker 3: now this is it's twofold Kenny Clark. Could they trade
- 9:25Speaker 3: for and then Michael Parson's trade is an older player. Right.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Their run defense has been horrendous. Even with Kenny Clark,
- 9:32Speaker 3: it's been bad. The Cardinals are not good at running back.
- 9:35Speaker 3: So although the McCarter did well last night, the Cardinals
- 9:37Speaker 3: were down to two running backs or injured reserve. So
- 9:42Speaker 3: they had to do something. They missed Bailey, as I said,
- 9:44Speaker 3: the start of the thought that they a Motey Smith
- 9:46Speaker 3: was the first round or two years ago out of Michigan.
- 9:48Speaker 3: And this is how you cover up the stakes. You overpay.
- 9:52Speaker 3: And they had to do it. And Jerry Jones, look
- 9:54Speaker 3: he got the draft capitol, and then Michael Parsons trade,
- 9:57Speaker 3: and they felt they could do this. Look, this helps
- 9:59Speaker 3: us to the future. Quinda Williams is a really good
- 10:02Speaker 3: football player. But they've gotten major problems in their secondary corner.
- 10:05Speaker 3: They're not good at corner. They know this. They're a
- 10:08Speaker 3: bad football team. Eagles gonna have a cakewalk. Let's set
- 10:11Speaker 3: some for major injuries to win the division. But this
- 10:14Speaker 3: is this is a trade more for the future.
- 10:15Speaker 1: To be honest with you, all right, and then the Jets,
- 10:17Speaker 1: I mean they've got now five first round picks, six
- 10:21Speaker 1: and twenty seven. But the interesting part for me here
- 10:23Speaker 1: is you know, you try in the draft to get
- 10:26Speaker 1: a top flight corner, a very good interior defensive tackle,
- 10:31Speaker 1: and that's what you did, and then you trade them
- 10:34Speaker 1: so you can do what try to get another corner
- 10:36Speaker 1: and you're not gonna get two guys better than those two.
- 10:38Speaker 2: It's just a weird situation. But they need to get
- 10:40Speaker 2: a quarterback.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Well, they've totally missed Darret Murchie. The GM totally missed
- 10:45Speaker 3: on Justin Field, who, by the way, the thirty million
- 10:48Speaker 3: guaranteed twenty million this year, ten million next year. Good luck,
- 10:52Speaker 3: So they'll have a quarterback for the future. They're a
- 10:54Speaker 3: very bad at receiver other than Garrett Williams. Garrett Wilson
- 10:58Speaker 3: is really good. And then look, he didn't Moujie, didn't
- 11:02Speaker 3: draft Quinny Ones, he didn't draft Toss Carter. Now, that
- 11:05Speaker 3: was a huge, huge payment by Chris Ballot the GMO.
- 11:09Speaker 3: The Coles, who is fighting to keep his job, Jim irsay,
- 11:12Speaker 3: the guy who hired him passed away and his daughters
- 11:14Speaker 3: are running the football team. It's not a given he'll
- 11:17Speaker 3: be back next year. The Colts have come out of
- 11:19Speaker 3: nowhere Mike to be one of the best teams in
- 11:21Speaker 3: the National Football League. They're the best now in the
- 11:23Speaker 3: AFC by record, so they were really bad at corner.
- 11:28Speaker 3: They too missed on Juju Brents, a second round corner
- 11:31Speaker 3: who was the starter. Then he got hurt and they
- 11:32Speaker 3: caught him last year earlier this year they cut him
- 11:35Speaker 3: after two seasons.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Mike.
- 11:36Speaker 3: When you miss him first and second round picks, this
- 11:39Speaker 3: is when you start covering up problems and mistakes.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Well, Adam, obviously they're getting ready for Monday night football
- 11:45Speaker 1: against the Packers, who had a loss of bad loss
- 11:48Speaker 1: by the way, against the Carolina Panthers the other day.
- 11:50Speaker 1: You can listen to that game right here on ninety
- 11:52Speaker 1: seven three. ESBA able to talk more about that matchup.
- 11:55Speaker 1: But the trade deadline Eagles get Jalen Phillips, Jay r Alexander,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Michael Carter and and of course we'll see how they
- 12:01Speaker 1: all come into play. The big news today though Nolan
- 12:04Speaker 1: Smith is activated from the or his window is open
- 12:07Speaker 1: for the practice window is now open, so he might
- 12:10Speaker 1: be back and we'll see how that all unfolds. Howie
- 12:13Speaker 1: Roseman is coming up momentarily here. We'll have that for
- 12:16Speaker 1: you on the Sports Batch this has been football at four.
- 12:19Speaker 1: Thanks Adam, thank you,
