- 0:05Online forum controlled by Nevada GOP House Candidate contains SLURS Nazi Talk,
- 0:09the AP review finds. Written by Wisdom Howell and Brian Slodisco This
- 0:15article is being read by an automated voice generated by Everlett. Washington,
- 0:21the AP, long before running for Congress, Marty O'Donnell was an award
- 0:25winning music composer for the popular Hallow video game franchise. His work
- 0:30drew legions of fans to an online forum, which the Nevada Republican
- 0:34has tried to turn into a galvanizing force as he tries to
- 0:37unseat a Democrat in a Las Vegas area district that could held
- 0:41decide house control. O'Donnell has served as the group's de facto leader,
- 0:45referring to himself as its benevolent dictator, while tapping its members for
- 0:49campaign cash and harnessing their enthusiasm in his bid. The campaign held
- 0:54a two-day event for forum members this month at a casino that
- 0:57included a video game tournament, panel discussions, and speeches. There is another
- 1:03side, however, to what is known as The Mardi Army. An associated
- 1:07press review of thousands of posts made on the forum between twenty
- 1:11twenty two and twenty twenty six found racial slurs, minimizations of Nazi
- 1:15Germany, and defenses of white nationalist conspiracy theories. It wasn't a couple
- 1:20of crazies. The popular sentiment was Yes, slavery should be legal, said
- 1:25Deacon Damron, a former group member who said O'Donnell banned him for
- 1:28calling another user a dork. Many views espoused in the forum, which
- 1:33is controlled by O'Donnell and his hand picked moderators, are at odds
- 1:37with some of the values articulated by the candidate and his campaign.
- 1:41For example, O'Donnell has staunchly defended Israel and condemned bigotry. In a
- 1:46statement, campaign spokesman Keith Schipper
- 1:48said O'Donnell has zero tolerance for hate in his forum. Since becoming
- 1:52aware of the issue in the spring, the campaign dedicated a staffer
- 1:56to monitor and, remove people that spew racist and antisemitic vitriol, Skipper
- 2:01said. Unfortunately, some posts have been missed over the years. Skipper said
- 2:06nearly two hundred users hate been banned, because of hateful rhetoric, including
- 2:10many of the people flagged by the Associated Press. Marty's support of
- 2:14Israel is unequivocal, and, as seen in various interviews and online posts,
- 2:18he will not tolerate the rise of antisemitism In our country. Mardi
- 2:23will continue to fight bigotry, disinformation, and hate toward Israel, because it
- 2:28is the right and moral thing to do. O'Donnell, who is endorsed
- 2:32by President Donald Trump, is running against four term Representative Susie Lee
- 2:36in the november third section as Republicans look to hang on to
- 2:39their razor thin majority. In a sign of how Republicans are triaging
- 2:44their chances in a tough environment, they pulled back spending this week
- 2:47in a handful of congressional races, including O'Donnell's. From hallow to emoji
- 2:53slurs. Most of the chat group's comments concern video games and gaming
- 2:58strategies. A section is reserved for questions about O'Donnell's work on Halo
- 3:02Games. After O'Donnell announced his first run for Congress in 2024, when
- 3:07he finished fourth in the party primary, some discussions centered around news
- 3:11and policy. Many of the offensive and controversial remarks came in freewheeling
- 3:16replies to otherwise anodyne comments about current prevents politics, or games. In
- 3:22may twenty twenty two, for example, a member wrote We stand with
- 3:26Marty. Others reacted to the post using letter emoji to spell out,
- 3:30incorrectly, a racial slur for black people. More soon chimed in, using
- 3:34emoji letters to invoke another anti black slur. Users were likely restricted
- 3:38from properly spelling out such words because by design the platform prevents
- 3:42emoji from being used more than once in reaction to a post.
- 3:46During a January 2025 discussion concerning free speech, a forum member expressed
- 3:51a desire to use a racial slur but refrained because that's not
- 3:54they attention Marty wants. Damron, the former group member, and another former
- 3:59user, said posters relied on coded language because more overt racist comments
- 4:04were likely to draw scrutiny from moderators. The other user spoke on
- 4:08condition of anonymity over fears of retaliation. The Mardi Army began as
- 4:13a fan forum. The Marty Army began as an inside joke. Developers
- 4:18of Hallow created the chatroom in two thousand one on a website
- 4:21devoted to the game. The name they chose was meant to invoke
- 4:25a club for rabid fans of the glam rock band KISS. O'Donnell
- 4:28joined the chat group and assumed control of the forum. He relocated
- 4:33it to Discord, a popular online platform. His candidate website contains a
- 4:37link to the Discord chat group, which he has also publicised from
- 4:40his account on the social media platform X. Hey all, if you'd
- 4:44like to be part of my run for Congress, you can be
- 4:46part of Marty's army, O'Donnell said in an ex post after he
- 4:50launched his 2024 campaign. O'Donnell has stated repeatedly that users who espouse
- 4:55racist or anti-Semitic views will be banned. He also threatened at times
- 4:59to delete posts. The AP found some users who espoused Nazi sympathies
- 5:04were kicked off the forum, But many of their posts remain. A
- 5:08user suggested in March twenty twenty four that the Nazis did some
- 5:12good things that were completely overshadowed by the terrible things they did.
- 5:17Another that month asked, Was Hitler really an evil guy? Like aside
- 5:22from the Holocaust, the user added, Did he really even do anything
- 5:25wrong? In February, a third member posted Heil Hitler. O'Donnell said. He
- 5:31wore a Mussolini mask. Current and historical fascist figures have also drawn
- 5:36approval. O'Donnell wrote on the forum that he rejects fascism, but he
- 5:41also shared a photo of himself wearing that he said was a
- 5:43mask of Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator and key Hitler ally, that
- 5:48he wore to a Halloween party. O'Donnell's campaign denied he dressed up
- 5:52as Mussolini. This mask was part of a scary Halloween costume nearly
- 5:57two decades ago. It was not labeled a Mussolini mask when he
- 6:01bought it, nor was he dressed up as Mussolini for the holiday,
- 6:03Skipper said. He purchased it because it was the ugliest creepy mask
- 6:07on the shelf. He jokingly referred to it as a Mussolini mask
- 6:11years later because he realized it vaguely looked like Mussolini. O’Donnell stated
- 6:16this year that he had been unaware of the resurgence of antisemitism.
- 6:20He told a conservative news outlet in September that he thought that
- 6:24antisemitism is something we don't have to worry about any more. I
- 6:28guess it just went under the surface, and it has been percolating
- 6:32there, he added in the interview with the Washington Reporter, which was
- 6:36founded by Republican political strategists. O'Donnell made the comment after the news
- 6:41site Jewish Insider reported that he hosted Charles Cornishdale, a far right
- 6:46influencer with Nazi sympathies, on his own podcast, The
- 6:49Marty O'Donnell Show. O'Donnell pledged to ban those who espouse anti-Semitism. In
- 6:55the spring, O’Donnell’s warned users on the forum that, if there was
- 6:59even a hint of antisemitism, the offending member would be instantly banned.
- 7:04Users responded to his post with an emoji of an exaggerated nose
- 7:07and goy, a sometimes disparaging Yiddish term for non Jews. Some anti
- 7:12hate groups view the use of the nose emoji as anti Semitic,
- 7:15while goy is a term that has been appropriated by those who
- 7:18espouse anti Semitic views. Wendy Millillo, an associate professor of journalism at
- 7:24American University, who researches extremist chat rooms, said such comments were clearly
- 7:29coded anti Semitic hate speech. Melillo said other posts she reviewed were
- 7:34more explicit. There is nothing coded, she said, about Heil Hitler. Some
- 7:39members of the Marty Army are aware the Forum could pose a
- 7:42liability. In 2024, a user wrote that O'Donnell's political career could face
- 7:48trouble if someone does a vulnerability study and they find this server.
