- 0:17Hello everyone and welcome to the After Ever
- 0:20After podcast, the show where we take a look
- 0:22at Disney sequels to truly see what life is like.
- 0:25After Ever After. I am one of your hosts, James,
- 0:29and as always, I have the wonderful Andy with
- 0:32me. How are you doing, Andy? Good afternoon.
- 0:34I'm doing all right. How are you doing? Not too
- 0:38shabby. It's weird. Anyone that knows, that's
- 0:43listened to the, which one was it? It was Lady
- 0:45and the Tramp. They know that we don't look at
- 0:49each other, but now... We've decided that we
- 0:52might as well try it, so we're staring each other
- 0:55down. I'm staring deep into Andy's soul right
- 0:58now. So if this episode sounds wrong, that's
- 1:01why. Yeah, 100%. It's all Luke Thomas' fault
- 1:05and the Sandler Pits curse. So, yeah, there we
- 1:10go. What are we doing today, Andy? Today we're
- 1:15going into Da Jungle for Da Jungle Book. And
- 1:20Da Jungle Book 2. Very exciting stuff. I think
- 1:25we both have a lot of fondness for the original.
- 1:29Absolutely, yeah. I would say, controversially,
- 1:34maybe not controversial, well, definitely not
- 1:38controversially, one of my favourite Disney classics
- 1:40of all time. It's so good. It's so good. Yeah.
- 1:45I don't think... I get what you mean when you're
- 1:47saying, like, controversial. Like, it's probably
- 1:49not the most popular pick for the best one, but
- 1:51it's... Yeah. But it's certainly popular. It's
- 1:54certainly, like, well -loved. 100%. 100%. But
- 1:59before we get to the original, we like to do
- 2:02something that Andy likes to call Before Ever
- 2:06Before. Andy, do you want to take it away and
- 2:08explain? Yeah, absolutely. So we like to go through
- 2:12all the Disney films in chronological order.
- 2:14From the original film, we started with Snow
- 2:16White. We've worked our way all the way down
- 2:18to The Jungle Book now. The last one we did was
- 2:22101 Dalmatians. But we like to look at the films
- 2:25in between that didn't actually get any sort
- 2:27of sequels or follow -ups. Just to see what kind
- 2:29of weird and wonderful ways they were able to
- 2:32continue onwards. Absolutely. There's only one
- 2:35film that came out between these two, which is
- 2:38The Sword in the Stone. Ah, one that I don't
- 2:42think I've ever seen. Me neither. It's a weird
- 2:45one because it's like, it's one where I feel
- 2:48like not many people talk about it, but it's
- 2:51one that like, while it never got a sequel, it's
- 2:54something I constantly see, if that makes sense.
- 2:58Like, I see Merlin in a lot of video games and
- 3:01stuff like that. You don't really see Arthur,
- 3:04but you see Merlin all the time. Yeah. It's so
- 3:07weird. And I think the villain, Madam Mir...
- 3:12I'll have to grab it up. Madam Mim, the villain.
- 3:17I see her a little bit. She's kind of like a...
- 3:21She's a witch kind of villain and she transforms
- 3:24into a few different things. So you've probably
- 3:26seen, maybe not her as a self, but you've probably
- 3:29seen some Madam Mim creatures that she turns
- 3:32into. What the fuck? She looks like the Cheshire
- 3:37Cat. Yes, yeah. So you may have seen some of
- 3:40hers. It looks like she turns into TikTok Croc.
- 3:42Although, to be fair, I don't think she's as
- 3:44popular. I tried to get into the Disney card
- 3:46game Locana a couple years ago, and I ended up
- 3:49just getting some of the cards, and I've never
- 3:51played it yet. I mean to. I just haven't. And
- 3:55there's loads of Madame Mim cards and stuff,
- 3:57so I'm probably just thinking of that. Right.
- 4:00Is that basically Magic the Gathering, but for...
- 4:07For Disney. Disney, right. Which is weird, because
- 4:10Disney's now in Magic the Gathering as well,
- 4:12technically speaking, isn't it, with Spider -Man?
- 4:14I was going to say, Magic the Gathering's gone
- 4:16mental recently. They've got, I found out, they've
- 4:19got Fallout ones, and I'm like, let's go! Yeah,
- 4:23they've got Fallout, they've got the Spider -Man
- 4:27stuff, they're probably expanding that universe
- 4:29as well, so give me, give me... No! Oh my god!
- 4:34They've got... final fantasy oh they could do
- 4:38they could totally do final fantasy king they
- 4:43could do kingdom hearts 100 why haven't they
- 4:46done that hero wizards of the coast listen to
- 4:50me do that it will sell so hard it might be apparently
- 4:54it could be disney putting a block on it if they
- 4:57do want to sell locana um they might think like
- 4:59that's true we don't want to put marvel in this
- 5:01yet but you can't have mickey or whatever yeah
- 5:05maybe it's like does disney straight own all
- 5:08of marvel it does doesn't it yeah like including
- 5:11the comics and stuff disney on everything marvel
- 5:14the only thing that they don't have control of
- 5:16is spider -man in movies that's it so why did
- 5:23they give him the pass to be magic that's so
- 5:26weird we're so off topic but um i'm just like
- 5:30genuinely this is quite fascinating i assume
- 5:33That they don't intend on putting Star Wars or
- 5:36Marvel in it, maybe? That's the only thing I
- 5:39can think of? Like the hobby of keeping it separate?
- 5:42So interesting. Yeah. But maybe one day. I swear,
- 5:46because I'm pretty sure someone was saying that
- 5:49the Final Fantasy ones absolutely smashed it
- 5:54out. So I can imagine that people who are into
- 5:57Kingdom Hearts and stuff would lap up. uh kingdom
- 6:04hearts uh magic the gathering i have i have no
- 6:08doubts and speaking of kingdom hearts to get
- 6:10us back on track apparently merlin is a big part
- 6:13of that as well uh and the madam mim villain
- 6:16um but other than that like another than the
- 6:19house of mouses and your kingdom hearts and i
- 6:22tried that dreamlight valley game recently and
- 6:24merlin's like the first disney character you
- 6:26meet in that oh cool um Which is quite fun, actually.
- 6:31You just end up doing little tasks for Wally
- 6:33and I love it. He has little chores for me to
- 6:35do and I'm like, don't worry, buddy, I've got
- 6:36it. I've got you, little man. You pat him on
- 6:40the head. But yeah, how is Dreamlight Valley?
- 6:44Is it good? I liked it. It's basically just Animal
- 6:48Crossing, but with Disney characters. But my
- 6:50problem with Animal Crossing is as soon as the
- 6:52rats stopped giving me missions, I got confused
- 6:54because I'm an idiot with games. So Disney seems
- 6:58like it has infinite missions, which is good.
- 7:01I need to buy it because I was actually just...
- 7:03That's nice. I was house -sitting for one of
- 7:06our listeners, actually. Kate and Tom. And they
- 7:11had a copy, so I just played this. Lovely. Oh,
- 7:14that's very nice. Yeah, I feel like I might enjoy
- 7:19it as well, but it's been a while since I've
- 7:21done an Animal Crossing kind of game. I didn't
- 7:24even play the new one during COVID or anything.
- 7:26Oh, that's the only one I have. Maybe I'll love
- 7:28it. Madame Mim has also been adopted into the
- 7:33Donald Duck universe in comic books, so she's
- 7:35now also classified as a Donald Duck villain
- 7:37in the comics. Donald Duck has villains. Does
- 7:42now. What's happening? But yeah, not much to
- 7:48say with this one. It's a weird one where not
- 7:50many people talk about it, but elements of it
- 7:51have lived on for like 50 plus years. So strange.
- 7:55But yeah, cool. Good to know. Now our train's
- 7:58saying bye. We're chugging away. Bye, Arthur.
- 8:02See you later, sword in the stone, idiot. Merlin,
- 8:05come along for the ride. I'd like to go back
- 8:08and watch it at some point. Arthur gets left.
- 8:12But today's not that day. No, it's not. We do
- 8:16Disney sequels, not Disney regulars. Yeah, get
- 8:19fucked. Come back when you've made a shit slot
- 8:22straight to TVT. It's just the first film again.
- 8:27The sword's back in the stone. Anyway, so we've
- 8:33left Sword in the Stone behind and we pull up
- 8:37to our destination, a jungle. And, oh, what's
- 8:41that on the floor? It's a book. It's the manual.
- 8:45So before we jump into the sequel, we always
- 8:47like to have a look at the original, lay some
- 8:50groundwork on what we thought of that. So the
- 8:52original was like 1967, I believe. Yeah. So what
- 8:58are your thoughts on the original Jungle Book?
- 9:02I adore the original Jungle Book. I think this
- 9:06film is fantastic. And it's one of those that
- 9:12I know well enough where I did not rewatch it
- 9:17because I feel like I know it well enough. And
- 9:21I think it's absolutely phenomenal. It's also,
- 9:25I'm pretty sure it's one of my dad's favorite
- 9:27films of all time. He loves it. And he, him and
- 9:32I as well, obviously talking about. And we'll
- 9:36get on to talking about how Jungle Book continued.
- 9:39But there was obviously the live action remake.
- 9:43And him and I both adored that as well. I think
- 9:48it's a really faithful adaptation of it. changes
- 9:54enough as well. So it's different enough from
- 9:57the original. Yeah. I love both of them. I think
- 10:00Jungle Book is phenomenal. Lovely characters,
- 10:04lovely story. It's just a really, really fun
- 10:09time. The music's amazing. I think it looks incredible
- 10:12as well. But yeah. What about you? What do you
- 10:16think of it? Pretty much exactly the same, including
- 10:18like, I think my dad. loved this one as well
- 10:21um because i remember when i was a kid i got
- 10:24like passed down bed sheets from him that was
- 10:26like jungle book bed sheets from the 60s um unbelievable
- 10:30so i think like the exact same would be fair
- 10:33it's uh beautifully animated the score is wonderful
- 10:36the music's amazing like everyone knows like
- 10:38yeah the songs from this one uh the characters
- 10:42are really fun um yeah I don't know what else
- 10:47to say. It's just so good. Voice acting is unbelievable
- 10:51as well. Like, everyone's just so good in this.
- 10:57Yeah. It's sublime. It's so good. Also, a budget
- 11:03of four million, box office of 378. They made
- 11:09fucking bank, bro. We've had countless other
- 11:13Junkabuck movies. yeah genuinely just cashing
- 11:17in on as much as possible um with the cast as
- 11:20well uh phil harris who plays blue was probably
- 11:24the first time that disney used a celebrity actor
- 11:28quote unquote for one of the animated films like
- 11:30just a normal actor coming in uh and it's it's
- 11:33seamless it works like spot on he is yeah he's
- 11:37really um He's just so effortlessly enjoyable
- 11:42to listen to as Baloo. Yeah, for real. Ladies
- 11:48want to be with him. Men want to be him. Children
- 11:51want to hang around with him. I would love nothing
- 11:53more than to be floating down a lazy river on
- 11:56Baloo's belly, slapping his belly, singing swinging
- 11:59music. Yeah, absolutely. I wouldn't want to be
- 12:03stolen by... By King Louie and his monkey brigade.
- 12:09It does seem like a good time though. It does.
- 12:12It does seem like a good day out. I'd prefer
- 12:15to just be going down the river lazily. I think
- 12:18it would be lovely. I'd rather be stolen by King
- 12:20Louie than that little fucking snake. Car. Yeah.
- 12:24Who's fantastic at this. it's um what a rascal
- 12:29it's sterling holloway i believe playing him
- 12:32and uh i really like the effort to make sure
- 12:35that his script has so many s words in like as
- 12:39much as many as possible it's simply sublime
- 12:43succulent scripting andy he has issues with his
- 12:48sinuses it's just my favorite line Yeah, I think
- 12:56he's absolutely... Like, I was going to say there's
- 13:01no one else that could play Ka that well, but
- 13:04I might be changing my opinion on that in a bit.
- 13:07Just for anyone who doesn't remember this one,
- 13:09there's not really... It's a weird one because
- 13:11there's not much of a plot. The plot is basically
- 13:13Mowgli's time in the jungle. He's a young boy
- 13:16who was farmed by wolves and raised by them.
- 13:18And Mowgli's time in the jungle is coming to
- 13:20a close because he's on the edge of becoming
- 13:21a man, which is more dangerous. And that means
- 13:25he's vulnerable to Shere Khan, a tiger who likes
- 13:28to kill men. He doesn't like man at all. So Bagheera
- 13:32the Panther goes on a... and an escapade to get
- 13:37Mowgli out of the jungle. And as they are on
- 13:39the way out of the jungle, it's kind of almost
- 13:41episodic. They meet various jungle characters
- 13:43like King Louie, the orangutan, there's Kaa the
- 13:48snake, Baloo the bear, there's elephants, there's
- 13:53vultures. There's everything you could ever want.
- 13:56Everything and anything that you can think of,
- 13:59it's there. And it's just a lovely time. It's
- 14:02a lovely little journey. Yeah, until the end,
- 14:05when we get a little confrontation. Yeah, where
- 14:09Shere Khan finally catches up. Shere Khan's not
- 14:12in this that much as well. He doesn't really
- 14:15come into it, because it's so episodic with the
- 14:17different animals. It always kind of surprises
- 14:20me when he's not in it until the third act, because
- 14:22he's so vivid in my mind, but he's like a really
- 14:24strong character. Yeah, I genuinely wonder if
- 14:28any of that is... because they introduced him
- 14:32a lot earlier in the live -action remake, don't
- 14:36they? He's always, like, kind of in the background
- 14:41doing something, and he's got a bit more... Like
- 14:46a constant presence. Yeah, yeah. He's, like,
- 14:49taking over the little starting area that all
- 14:53the animals are in in the remake, but in this
- 14:56one, he's just, like, that force that's... you
- 15:01know in the background but you don't see him
- 15:04until the very end when it's too late my favorite
- 15:08bit of this entire movie is uh when share con
- 15:11uh confronts car he believes car might have something
- 15:15some knowledge of where mogli is and mogli's
- 15:17like open cars coils in the tree um the car's
- 15:21like really terrified of shere khan but like
- 15:23won't give up mogli because it's his lunch and
- 15:26that there's an amazing bit of animation where
- 15:29car's like giving him this like sob story of
- 15:31like oh i've just been so tired my my sinuses
- 15:34have been playing up and the animation on shere
- 15:38khan's face is like mockingly like nodding sympathetically
- 15:41like yes yes it's like amazing it's like the
- 15:46funniest bit of animation i've ever seen unreal
- 15:49i yeah i this film's just so so perfect man i
- 15:54just love it so much what a lovely bunch of characters
- 15:57what a lovely story and like you say it is so
- 16:02simple and it is episodic yeah but it it kind
- 16:06of blends together so well as well yeah like
- 16:09no nothing overstays its welcome it's just ah
- 16:12ah lovely yeah and i think um i think the episodic
- 16:17thing kind of like really makes the pace and
- 16:20just feel like insanely fast like this film's
- 16:23like over before you even for me anyway like
- 16:26it just it goes so quick like because each segment
- 16:29is just such such a little well -paced bit and
- 16:32then it's like on to the next on to the next
- 16:33it's like always moving yeah i think the last
- 16:36time i watched it the only thing that kind of
- 16:38dragged for me was the king louis bit a little
- 16:41bit because there's like A couple of scenes where
- 16:44Baloo's dancing away in that, but it just felt
- 16:50like it was just holding a little bit too long
- 16:53on Baloo, just kind of not improv -ing, but riffing
- 16:58kind of thing. And it doesn't move away from
- 17:05it quickly enough for me, but I don't care. It's
- 17:09fun to watch. I really like it. But if I'm remembering
- 17:16rightly, that's the only part that kind of dragged
- 17:18for me the last time I watched it. Other than
- 17:21that, what a fucking picture, man. So good. I
- 17:24like that. I think that bit's paced well for
- 17:25me. I think my only complaint is like I'm mixed
- 17:28on the ending where Mowgli eventually leaves.
- 17:31He spends the entire film fighting to stay in
- 17:34the jungle and he sees a human and it's... There's
- 17:39a bit of a... i don't know i think it's very
- 17:42sweet that he sees a human and he's completely
- 17:43enchanted um yeah and like he realizes like maybe
- 17:48it's good to be with your own pack but then at
- 17:50the same time it feels like it goes i don't know
- 17:53like it makes the film feel a little bit i don't
- 17:55know i it's a strange one because i like it and
- 17:58i don't like it i think part of the problems
- 18:00is a bit of a dated and sexist land where blue's
- 18:03kind of angry that a woman's coming between them
- 18:05like you don't want him deal with one of them
- 18:08and all this stuff and it's like oh yeah yeah
- 18:11and it doesn't help that like she's singing a
- 18:13song about how she'll fetch water until she's
- 18:15grown and then she'll start cooking for the family
- 18:17and it's like okay um this is all i'm made for
- 18:22and i don't think i'm the only one that finds
- 18:25that ending a bit weird because the live action
- 18:28one completely changes it and ditches that and
- 18:31he stays in the jungle yeah it and it's so much
- 18:34better it's so good what a good ending for that
- 18:37i think it it works so much better yeah and then
- 18:41like sure you can explore him going into the
- 18:44like if they ever did a sequel to the to the
- 18:46live action one explore him going into um the
- 18:51man village and like interacting with them but
- 18:54you're not committed to that you can just stay
- 18:57in the jungle if you want to yeah and then have
- 18:59man be some kind of presence that comes into
- 19:03the jungle and is starting to expand into the
- 19:05jungle yeah you know like i think there's there's
- 19:08a lot they could do with that ending but yeah
- 19:11i agree i think it's a weird ending for the og
- 19:14yeah i mean it's weird because like as a metaphor
- 19:17it makes sense like it's him growing and like
- 19:20this is him except like you have to leave like
- 19:22childhood behind and this is like life now but
- 19:25it just doesn't it doesn't click as well um and
- 19:29like like we're saying like the live action one
- 19:31i think it works better for me as well um agreed
- 19:34yeah but yeah it's not something where i hate
- 19:37the end and it's just mixed yeah yeah totally
- 19:41agree um You got any more to say about the OG?
- 19:45Yeah, I think something that you'll have forgotten
- 19:47about it, because I always forget about it, is
- 19:49there's a bit where, after the fight with Shere
- 19:52Khan, Baloo is seemingly dead. And Bagheera gives
- 19:56a really heartwarming eulogy for him. It's such
- 19:58a cliche bit, but it's like Baloo's actually
- 20:01alive and he's listening in. They're playing
- 20:03the organ music. It's just very sweet and funny.
- 20:10I did forget about that. That was really fun.
- 20:13Bagheera has a great reaction when he... I love
- 20:15Bagheera. When he finds out that he's alive,
- 20:17he's like, Why you... Come on! You rascal! I
- 20:26also think you made... The last shot of the movie
- 20:29is so cute. It's the cutest thing in the world.
- 20:32It's Bagheera and Baloo leave Mowgli, and the
- 20:36last shot is them... arm around each other like
- 20:39dancing away back into the jungle oh just like
- 20:43oh that's very sweet yeah but um what a lovely
- 20:49what a lovely film i do have some production
- 20:51notes and trivia if you'd like to hear a bit
- 20:53about the making of this one hit me the hell
- 20:57up man that's sick this one is disney sort of
- 21:01back in the rains more than he was recently.
- 21:05Diane Disney Miller commented that her dad was
- 21:06more focused on TV and Disneyland and live action
- 21:09stuff at this point. But after Sword in the Stone
- 21:12didn't hit that well, he decided to get a bit
- 21:14more hands -on with this. He was like, he rubbed
- 21:19his hands together and he went, let me cook.
- 21:24fucking blasted out one of the best disney classics
- 21:26ever and ironically it's the last one he worked
- 21:29on because he died during the production of this
- 21:30so this is the last no way yeah this is the last
- 21:34one with his fingers in the pie oh shit i didn't
- 21:37i i genuinely didn't know that was crazy yeah
- 21:39um no so i think Robin Hood must be very soon
- 21:44after this. And in the Robin Hood, there's a
- 21:47lot of reused animations. Like the bear that
- 21:50plays little John is like the same design as
- 21:52Baloo. Yes. Some of the same dancing and stuff.
- 21:55I do remember that. And I think a lot of it was
- 21:57just the transition of like Disney's death and
- 21:59dealing with that and like just taking a couple
- 22:01of shortcuts to get that delivered. Yeah. Even
- 22:06though Disney was set to die, it didn't stop
- 22:08him from butting heads again with... With the
- 22:11same guy from last time, actually. So last episode
- 22:14we talked about Bill Peet, who was the writer
- 22:18of 101 Dalmatians, and they had a bit of a spat
- 22:21where Bill Peet called out Disney for being an
- 22:23absentee father. This time they clashed again.
- 22:27Fucking roasted. Bill Peet wanted it to be darker
- 22:31like the original Rudyard Kipling book. Disney
- 22:34didn't like that. He wanted it to be better.
- 22:36Not better, sorry. He wanted it to be better
- 22:38suited for... a little audience brighter and
- 22:43happier yeah like there's nothing in this film
- 22:45that i think would scare a kid realistically
- 22:46speaking yeah unless you have a snake phobia
- 22:50i have a snake phobia and cars fun as fuck that's
- 22:53true actually but um one of the one of the things
- 22:57unless you're scared of fun one of the things
- 23:02that the um when they were clashing heads again
- 23:05Disney apparently said to Bill Pete, why don't
- 23:07you go see Mary Poppins and see what real entertainment
- 23:09looks like? It's just like the smuggest thing
- 23:15I've ever heard. Fucking hell. Fucking hell.
- 23:25Also, I hate Mary Poppins. I mean, I know everyone
- 23:28else loves it. I'm not going to get into it,
- 23:30but fuck off, Disney. No, I think you and I are
- 23:35in the same... I don't hate Mary Poppins. It
- 23:38doesn't do anything for me. Mary Poppins Returns
- 23:43was alright, but the original just does nothing
- 23:46for me. But we know that producer Jordan G and
- 23:51Luke T from the Sandler Pit podcast, both of
- 23:56them are huge Mary Poppins fans. I'm pretty sure.
- 24:01Yeah, they'd have loved this. They would have
- 24:03been like, Yeah, baby! Get out of here, Pete!
- 24:08There would have been his little goons like,
- 24:12Yeah, get it, boss! Apparently Bill Pete said
- 24:18he didn't reply back and he's glad he didn't
- 24:20because Disney obviously died a couple years
- 24:22later and he's glad it didn't get dirtier than
- 24:25it did. But this film led to Bill Pete leaving
- 24:28Disney, which is a... More significant than I
- 24:32thought it was originally because he only really
- 24:35took a creative role around this era, but he
- 24:38was actually apparently there since Snow White,
- 24:40just slowly building up in how much he was doing.
- 24:43So it's one of the OGs leaving because Disney
- 24:46kept fucking clushing into him. I've just seen
- 24:49this, actually. Justin Marks wrote the screenplay
- 24:52for the live -action one, and he said that if
- 24:56they were going to do a sequel... they would
- 24:58have taken more elements from Bill Pete's original
- 25:01screenplay. But I don't think we're ever going
- 25:04to get that to people now because it's 10 years
- 25:06old. God! The remake is 10 years old. That's
- 25:10crazy. Yeah, and Jon Favreau seems very planted
- 25:15in Star Wars right now. That's mental. Some other
- 25:19stuff. On this one, this is a little fun story
- 25:22I thought was cute that you would enjoy. Richard
- 25:25Sherman, the songwriter, who did a cracking job,
- 25:28was originally trying to court Louis Prima to
- 25:31play King Louis. So he's showing Louis Prima,
- 25:34I want to be like you, if it's banned. And he
- 25:36said that Louis Prima said, are you trying to
- 25:38make a monkey out of me? And Sherman said, no,
- 25:40no, you're the ape. These guys are the monkeys.
- 25:44Such a silly little story. That's really fun.
- 25:48I like that. speaking of King Louis we actually
- 25:54mentioned earlier they originally considered
- 25:55Louis Armstrong for the role but according to
- 25:58Richard Sherman this was discarded because the
- 26:00writer pointed out that it is going to be controversial
- 26:04if you have a black man playing an ape it's going
- 26:06to be politically terrible is what he said yeah
- 26:08and he said he said that was the last thing on
- 26:12our minds but you know like it is a most racially
- 26:17insensitive time but i do kind of probably believe
- 26:21that that is the case like he has a very simple
- 26:23explanation for why he came to this character
- 26:25which is just monkey swing swing music is fun
- 26:29and it's like yeah yeah it's um it's a uh it's
- 26:34an interesting one um I don't think... I don't
- 26:39think it's as... Like, we've gone through a lot
- 26:42of racist characters. We've gone through the
- 26:44Indians and Peter Pan. Awful. The... Yeah, awful.
- 26:50And King Louis... King Louis... I... I may be
- 26:54giving this film more leeway because I love it,
- 26:56but King Louie feels more of an accident than
- 26:58anything. I don't think it's intended to be a
- 27:01stereotype or anything like that. I do genuinely
- 27:03believe that. Yeah, not at all. I totally agree
- 27:07with you. It doesn't feel like it's making fun
- 27:12or stereotyping or anything. He's just a lovable
- 27:19little guy that loves... Swing music. It is what
- 27:23it is. And the only other note I've got for this
- 27:29one is that... Oh, no. Sorry. This is a weirdly
- 27:33petty one. According to Elsie Kipling Bainbridge,
- 27:36which is Rudyard Kipling's daughter, the first
- 27:39syllable of Mowgli is supposed to rhyme with
- 27:41cow, not go. So it should be Mowgli. And then
- 27:45it says, she reportedly never forgave Disney
- 27:48for the gaff, which is very... I'll never forgive
- 27:51you for this, Disney, you son of a bitch. The
- 27:56Beatles were actually meant to be in this. I
- 27:59fucking thought that's what they were supposed
- 28:01to be. Yeah. And they still kind of resemble
- 28:05the Beatles, but John Lennon vetoed it at the
- 28:08last minute. What a prick. I know, that's why
- 28:10he was shot in the street like a dog, I think.
- 28:21Oh no. Jesus Christ. The vultures are really
- 28:27lovely in this. They're very nice characters.
- 28:29It's so funny hearing such a scouse accent in
- 28:33the jungle. I know, yeah. But it's fun and it
- 28:38works. yeah i love it and one last note is just
- 28:43gregory peck of to kill a mockingbird fame at
- 28:46the time was the president of the um academy
- 28:49the you know the academy awards and he pushed
- 28:52for this not only to get nominated but to win
- 28:54and then when the other academy members didn't
- 28:57agree about nominating an animated film he just
- 28:59left he's like right fuck he's i'm gone then
- 29:01that's how much he loves sick what a dude that's
- 29:05awesome what chad I love that so much. Well,
- 29:12that's it for The Jungle Book. Did it continue
- 29:15in any other ways? It must have done. The Jungle
- 29:18Book has continued in several other ways. We've
- 29:23talked about the live -action one, but there's
- 29:25actually multiple live -action ones. There was
- 29:29the 1994 version, which is more based on the
- 29:34book, I would say. yeah it's not really got anything
- 29:37to do with this um but it is disney so it is
- 29:41technically a live action remake yes that one
- 29:45i've seen it once as a kid my granddad used to
- 29:47love it uh and i remember being terrified because
- 29:50there's a big snake at the end oh god and i wouldn't
- 29:54eat for a bit i can't eat i just feel sick with
- 29:57anxiety oh no oh and then there was a direct
- 30:04to video sequel slash prequel that came out just
- 30:08after it called the jungle book mogli story which
- 30:10is 1998 um not much to say about that one i haven't
- 30:14seen this one uh eartha kitt's in it which is
- 30:16fun she plays bagheera that's great oh back playing
- 30:20another cat after cat and then you've also obviously
- 30:26got jungle book 2016 which we both love um hell
- 30:29yeah John Favreau with Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley,
- 30:34Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito
- 30:37and Christopher Walken. Absolutely banging cast
- 30:41on that one. Arguably the live action remake
- 30:45that has potentially put us in this cursed state
- 30:49of getting them all the time because it was really
- 30:51well received and it made a banging amount of
- 30:54bank. It made almost a billion. A billion dollars!
- 30:58But it's not that film's fault that the rest
- 31:00suck. Yeah, it's true. Well, apart from you said
- 31:02Cinderella was pretty alright. Yeah, I liked
- 31:05Cinderella. That came before this, I think. Yeah,
- 31:08yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Jungle Books
- 31:10also had two TV shows. One's just called Jungle
- 31:13Cubs, and it's pretty much exactly what you think
- 31:16it's going to be. It's like Jungle Book Babies.
- 31:17Yeah. Cute, fun, whatever. One of them is...
- 31:21Quite a famous TV show. But it's a really weird
- 31:24one. It's Tailspin. Which has nothing to do with
- 31:27Jungle Book. Other than the fact that it's the
- 31:29characters from Jungle Book. And it is really
- 31:32weird. Baloo is in it. As a pilot. And he pilots
- 31:38a plane. Bagheera is in it. I don't think he's
- 31:42a pilot. But he's in there somewhere. Shia Khan
- 31:45is like a villainous business owner. I don't
- 31:49know if any other characters appear, but those
- 31:51three are 100 % in it, and, like, Baloo is the
- 31:53main character. What the fuck are you talking
- 31:57about? This isn't a real thing! Tailspin's real.
- 32:02What do you mean? Tailspin was a Disney animated
- 32:07TV show from the 90s. It's really popular in
- 32:10America. I don't think it really took off as
- 32:12well here. But it is literally, like, the Jungle
- 32:15Book characters. It's not canon, obviously, because
- 32:18they fly planes and stuff. But it's Baloo. It's
- 32:22Shere Khan. I'm sure Bagheera's in there. I've
- 32:24just looked up and King Louie's apparently in
- 32:26there. And it is literally just a show about
- 32:28Baloo flying planes and stuff. What the fuck?
- 32:33Yeah. It's got video games and everything. What?
- 32:37This is crazy. Yeah. That feels... That's so
- 32:41bizarre. it's a very weird way this franchise
- 32:46has continued yeah and it was really popular
- 32:49um it came around the time of like duck tales
- 32:51and that like it was that kind of animation block
- 32:54i was just gonna say because it's like um you've
- 32:57got darkwing duck duck tales chip and dale uh
- 33:01timon and pumbaa goof troop you know all of those
- 33:04things that came out at the same time doing different
- 33:08things with those characters, but it just feels
- 33:11so weird. It's really popular in America. Yeah.
- 33:14And I could be wrong, but I think there's something
- 33:17about it in the Chippendale movie. I think like
- 33:21one of the characters is in it or something like
- 33:22that. Oh, cool. That'd be fun. That would be
- 33:26nice to see him. That would be nice to see him.
- 33:30Yeah. My old friend. I need to watch Chippendale
- 33:32again. I don't know why I said that. That's weird.
- 33:38So for video games for Jungle Books, like I've
- 33:41mentioned, you've got Talespin, had several video
- 33:44games, but then there's also just some normal
- 33:46Jungle Book games. There was one for the... I
- 33:50think it was the SNES, but I played it on PC
- 33:52when I was a kid, which was insanely difficult.
- 33:56It's actually got ported to model consoles recently.
- 33:58There's a little Disney classic console. Oh,
- 34:01is that the one that had... The Lion King and
- 34:06Aladdin. Yeah, yeah. Because that was the three
- 34:09games that I had for PC as a kid. It was those
- 34:11three and they were all, like, insanely challenging.
- 34:14Yeah, all I've heard about Lion King is how,
- 34:18like, difficult that one is. And then Aladdin
- 34:23apparently is just absolutely unreal. Like, the
- 34:26SNES and the Sega Genesis version are, like,
- 34:30one of the best platformers on... Those consoles
- 34:34kind of thing. I don't know if you noticed, but
- 34:36apparently the reason Lion King is so hard is
- 34:38because it was at a time when kids would rent
- 34:40video games, so Disney wanted to make sure that
- 34:42the kids couldn't finish it in one weekend. Greedy
- 34:46corporations. You gotta come back if you wanna
- 34:48beat Scar! There was also, believe it or not,
- 34:55a Dance Mat game called Jungle Book Groove Party
- 34:58for the PS2. Sick. i'm looking this up right
- 35:03now and then obviously jungle book has continued
- 35:07in all of the classic ways it's got your disneylands
- 35:10and your disney infinities and your disney mirror
- 35:13verses and all of this shit i'm sure it's probably
- 35:17in that disney uh what was i talking about before
- 35:20god what is it called again fucking animal kingdom
- 35:24of disney it's probably in that somewhere animal
- 35:26crossing disney disney dreamlike valley Yes,
- 35:29it's probably in that, yes. I don't know yet,
- 35:32but it probably is there somewhere. How else
- 35:35did it continue? Or is there something that we're
- 35:38missing? There's a really popular movie that
- 35:42came out in 2003 called The Jungle Book 2, which
- 35:45continued it. I don't know if you want to talk
- 35:47about that at all. Nah, we'll be all right. But
- 35:50the other one that I was going to say is Mowgli
- 35:54as well. That's not Disney. I know, but it's
- 36:00like another way that the Jungle Book continued,
- 36:02isn't it? I guess, but if you want to go into
- 36:05all the other Jungle Book adaptations, we'll
- 36:06be here a while. Skip it. Never mind. Cool. I'm
- 36:11actually going to see how many adaptations of
- 36:13the Jungle Book are there. There's got to be
- 36:15so many. Thanks, Google. Over five. Great. Thumbs
- 36:21up. Cheers, mate. I just fucking named five.
- 36:26Yeah. So. Now that we've discussed all things
- 36:30original Jungle Book, there's only one thing
- 36:33left to talk about. And that is the 2003 animated
- 36:40sequel, Jungle Book 2. Directed by Steve Trenberth,
- 36:48who I have up here. This was his directorial
- 36:53debut. Since then, he's not... done much. He's
- 36:59done some episodes of a TV show called Sydney
- 37:02Sailboat. He's done a few episodes of The Croods
- 37:07Family Tree and most recently of his released
- 37:13stuff anyway, he's got a couple of upcoming things.
- 37:16He directed A Chuck E. Cheese Christmas in 2025.
- 37:23Jesus Christ! So he's barely done anything. This
- 37:29is crazy. So there's not that much about him.
- 37:33And yet this was his first film. So we'll see
- 37:38how that goes. It was written by Carl Giers and
- 37:41Evan Spiliotopoulos. It had a budget of 20 million.
- 37:51And it made 186 million worldwide. So it did
- 37:56pretty well. It was actually theatrically released
- 38:00as well. So when it came out, it was going up
- 38:03against Daredevil, which released on the same
- 38:07day. That's such a funny double bill. Isn't it?
- 38:11Just getting out of the cinema, seeing Jungle
- 38:13Book, and you're like, I'm going to go and watch
- 38:15a blind man fight crime. Come on, babe, it's
- 38:18Valentine's Day. Man, the fact that it's Valentine's
- 38:22Day as well is like, it's insane. Oh no, so funny.
- 38:27So in that weekend as well, which was President's
- 38:30Day weekend, it was ranked fourth for most popular.
- 38:36So Chicago beat it. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
- 38:40beat it. And number one was Daredevil. Crazy
- 38:43that some things like... Lord of the Rings The
- 38:46Two Towers was still in the cinemas at that point.
- 38:49Kangaroo Jack as well. Crazy. The story of Jungle
- 38:53Book 2, it picks up after the original, obviously.
- 38:59It's a sequel. So Mowgli's now in the man village
- 39:03and he's telling stories of his time in the jungle.
- 39:08And then eventually, you know, we're seeing him
- 39:13with his new family kind of thing and how he's
- 39:18enjoying it. And then eventually we see Baloo
- 39:22and Bagheera in the jungle as well. Baloo really
- 39:26misses Mowgli. So he's going to go and kind of
- 39:30check in on him, see how he's doing. And Mowgli's
- 39:33missing the jungle as well. So they're kind of
- 39:36both trying to meet at the same point. And there's
- 39:39a river that separates the village from the jungle.
- 39:44And if you cross, then you're in there. Shere
- 39:46Khan comes back and he wants revenge on Mowgli
- 39:49and sneaks into the village. Hilarity ensues.
- 39:55That is pretty much the story of Jungle Book,
- 40:00isn't it? Jungle Book 2. Yeah. Well, I mean,
- 40:04Mowgli and his new siblings end up back in the
- 40:08jungle, which I guess is the remainder of the
- 40:10plot. Him and them two. Andy, what did you think
- 40:14of this sequel? I... I didn't care for it. Not
- 40:21at all, really. I will say... This was two of
- 40:26the most miserable films that we've watched.
- 40:28So last episode's one, for me, was miserable.
- 40:32This was miserable. This made me sad. Yeah. You
- 40:40know what's really annoying as well? I saw this
- 40:42as a kid and I remember liking it. Oh, no way.
- 40:46I don't know what I liked about it. I think it's
- 40:48just that kid thing of like, I know that guy.
- 40:50Yeah, yeah. That's good enough for me. It must
- 40:52be. And I'm genuinely like 100 % sure this is
- 40:57the reason that most of these Disney sequels
- 40:59exist is because kids will see something that
- 41:04they've seen before and they'll be like, hooray,
- 41:06yay. But all they're doing, man, is going through
- 41:12essentially the same plot, but stupider for kids.
- 41:18So these... It's really annoying because it's
- 41:21these... They're doing these films again, essentially,
- 41:25but they're dumbing them down to make them dumber
- 41:29for kids when the first ones were already made
- 41:34for a younger audience. What are they doing?
- 41:39It makes no sense why they're... And this is
- 41:43the thing that we've seen with a lot of these
- 41:45sequels. They're dumbing them down so much that
- 41:47it's becoming... essentially, like, the most
- 41:52basic storytelling. There's no conflict or anything.
- 41:56And most of the time, they're just doing the
- 41:59first one again, which this film ends up doing.
- 42:02It's just the same thing as the first one, but
- 42:05way worse. Yeah, because this one's... The first
- 42:08one has that kind of conflict of whether Mowgli
- 42:10should be in the jungle where he wants to be
- 42:12or anything like that. But this one's just Mowgli's
- 42:14temporarily lost in the jungle again. Yeah. And
- 42:18he needs to... There's an interesting idea with
- 42:22it which I think is... I wouldn't even give the
- 42:26film credit for it because I think it's just
- 42:28where any writer would go to from the first one.
- 42:31The conflict of does Mowgli feel like he belongs
- 42:34in the man village or does he yearn for the jungle
- 42:36still? I think any writer would come to that
- 42:38and I think what they do with it here... is just
- 42:43the most basic level of it. Like, he does want
- 42:45to still be in the jungle. He ends up going in
- 42:47the jungle, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Yeah,
- 42:49and he likes... What's her name? Is it Shanti?
- 42:54Shanti, yeah. He likes Shanti, and he doesn't
- 42:57want to show Baloo that he likes Shanti, but
- 43:00he also likes Shanti. And he's like, oh, maybe
- 43:05Shanti would like the jungle. And he's trying
- 43:08to mix jungle with... human with with man village
- 43:13kind of thing yeah he's trying to shit where
- 43:15he eats exactly um so it's just a yeah it's a
- 43:21very um basic how do we merge two worlds together
- 43:25that's yeah just fucking sometimes go hang out
- 43:29in the jungle sometimes go hang out in the man
- 43:31village like what's wrong with that and how does
- 43:34it take you a whole 74 minutes or however long
- 43:38this fucking film is to come up with that idea
- 43:41yeah and um they need to get the because in this
- 43:46one shanti's like kind of like mogli's sister
- 43:48slash love interest um yeah or whatever uh gross
- 43:52well they're not actually related it's just he's
- 43:56in that family and like you know uh and there's
- 43:59also like a younger one who's a little uh headstrong
- 44:04boy um who also is interested in the jungle so
- 44:07they need to figure out a way to get them in
- 44:09the jungle with mogli just themselves because
- 44:11if there's man in the jungle then it's a different
- 44:13movie it's just them hunting animals it's just
- 44:15craving the hunter yeah exactly but good we're
- 44:20not good but better yeah And the way they do
- 44:26it is just, well, Shere Khan sneaks into the
- 44:29village and causes mayhem as all the villagers
- 44:31are trying to get rid of him. Mowgli runs away
- 44:33into the jungle. No. No, Baloo comes in as well.
- 44:38Yeah. Mowgli runs away with Baloo, who comes
- 44:41into the jungle. Let me start that sentence again.
- 44:44Baloo comes into the man village. Yeah. At the
- 44:48same time that Shere Khan happens to also be...
- 44:50going at the man village shanty sees baloo running
- 44:54off with mogli over his shoulder and she thinks
- 44:56the bear's kidnapping him even though even though
- 45:00mogli has told stories about this fucking bear
- 45:03and like i wrote it down i was like surely he's
- 45:07talked about baloo before Yeah, he sings about
- 45:12the jungle and everything. Exactly. He sings
- 45:15about the jungle. He does a little presentation
- 45:16of like, oh yeah, I hung out with Baloo and all
- 45:19of that. What are you talking about? You know
- 45:21this bear. Why are you being like, ah, it's a
- 45:24blood animal. You know that Mowgli had a connection
- 45:27with the fucking animals. Yeah. Even if you didn't,
- 45:31there's no reason for Shanti to not go to a father
- 45:34and be like, a bear's just kidnapped Mowgli and
- 45:38get his help. They kind of like, put this weird
- 45:40thing in where she feels like she has to go by
- 45:43herself to save Mowgli because no one will help
- 45:44her. But there's no conflict that that would
- 45:46even be the case. There's no, there's never a
- 45:49single second that would put your doubt in the
- 45:51mind that the dad would help. He's just a very
- 45:53loving father. And he's very, he admonishes Loki,
- 45:57Loki, Mowgli. He admonishes Mowgli at one point,
- 46:03but he's not like an asshole. He's not like,
- 46:06fuck you Mowgli and fuck the jungle. If you go
- 46:08near that again, I'll burn it down. The only
- 46:10reason that he gets annoyed is because they see
- 46:14across the river as really dangerous, which it
- 46:17kind of is, you know? It's a jungle. Of course
- 46:20it's dangerous. As soon as they go across the
- 46:23river, they meet the big python with hypnotizing
- 46:25powers. He's got a point. He really does have
- 46:30a point, yeah. There's an interesting idea with
- 46:32Shere Khan when the film starts where his...
- 46:34In the first film, if you mentioned him, the
- 46:37animals are all like... oh Shere Khan's after
- 46:39him okay shit that's that's bad juju but in this
- 46:42one there's an interesting idea where it's like
- 46:44Shere Khan's is like uh his riz has been destroyed
- 46:48and no one respects him anymore he's like the
- 46:51laughingstock of the jungle at the minute because
- 46:53he got fooled not even by a man by a child so
- 46:59like It would have been really interesting to
- 47:04see more of a kind of rising up and proving himself
- 47:08again that he is truly the absolute, like, Don.
- 47:14Yeah, it's an interesting idea that they just
- 47:17kind of do nothing with. And Shere Khan's really
- 47:20good in this film as well because he's... uh
- 47:22voiced by tony j so it's not the original voice
- 47:25actor george sanders um it's tony j who is actually
- 47:30played frollo in the hunchback of notredame so
- 47:32he's got some disney disney credits to him uh
- 47:36and he's great like yeah every time we watch
- 47:39one of these sequels it feels like Some of the
- 47:41characters are cast well, some of them aren't,
- 47:44but the villains are always cast so well compared
- 47:48to the original voice actor. I don't get how
- 47:50they do it. Genuinely, they do such a good job
- 47:53of either replicating or adding on to the legacy
- 47:58of that character. Another one that we were talking
- 48:01about before was Ka. Yes. So originally, as we
- 48:06said, voiced by Sterling Holloway. And then Winnie
- 48:10the Pooh comes in, takes over. My goodness, what
- 48:14a great casting choice. Well, it makes sense
- 48:17because Sterling Holloway is the original Winnie
- 48:19the Pooh as well. Exactly. Jim Cummins took it
- 48:22over. So it makes sense to do the exact same
- 48:24with Clark because it is pretty much the same
- 48:26voice. It's spot on. It's so good. They didn't
- 48:30do as many S's in this one, though. No, but again,
- 48:34they have really fun scenes of Shere Khan and
- 48:36Karr on screen together again. I actually really
- 48:39like this bit where the little kid beats the
- 48:43shit out of Karr and then he kicks him off a
- 48:46cliff and then he starts charging and he's like,
- 48:48you're not getting off that easy! And it's just,
- 48:52I really like that. It's just silly. Yeah, it's...
- 48:56You know, he hypnotized... We get the same...
- 48:59Like I say, a lot of this is the same beats as
- 49:02the first one. You get the car scene where he
- 49:06nearly eats Shanti because he hypnotizes her.
- 49:09Then he eats a rock. And then you get the Shere
- 49:13Khan and car scene. And it's just like... It's
- 49:19insane because they do it to the point where
- 49:22they even do... the king louis scene however
- 49:26legally in this movie they can't use king louis
- 49:30so it's a very strange decision to keep referencing
- 49:33this character and then not have him in the movie
- 49:35yeah they just like baloo's like hell yeah i
- 49:39took over this place and and like okay yeah he
- 49:43sings a really bad song there and oh it sucks
- 49:47this is such a shit version of i want to be like
- 49:51you Yeah, let's just say it. It's the music compared.
- 49:55I thought when that first song came on, I was
- 49:59like, this could be something. It's close to,
- 50:04like, at least it's the vibe of the Jungle Book
- 50:07kind of thing. Yeah, that one's, like, about,
- 50:11like, listening to the jungle beat or something.
- 50:13Yeah, and it's all right. And then they go through
- 50:18a couple of, they, like, do... bare necessities
- 50:22but like a newer version it's fine it's way worse
- 50:26talking about prickly pears and pickled peppers
- 50:29and whatever um and then they go on to the wild
- 50:33song which is the shit version of um i want to
- 50:37be like you yeah um and it's just all the songs
- 50:41all the original songs are just so much worse
- 50:45and even when they do like a an updated version
- 50:49of one of the one of the original songs sucks
- 50:52man sucks yeah i don't know it's it's it's weird
- 50:56to make these decisions that kind of draws more
- 50:58attention to the fact that you're not as good
- 51:00as the original exactly the cast is the cast
- 51:03isn't even bad like we've already glazed a couple
- 51:06of them But, like, John Goodman as Baloo just
- 51:09isn't it for me. It feels wrong. He's not, like,
- 51:13I get it. But if you're going to put someone
- 51:17in from Big Lebowski, put Jeff Bridges in. You
- 51:22know what I mean? He's way more, how good would
- 51:25that be? Because he's so, as the dude, he's so
- 51:29chill. And, like, all of that. John Goodman,
- 51:33don't get me wrong, he's phenomenal. He's such
- 51:35a good actor. He's such a good voice actor. But
- 51:38he doesn't fit for Baloo. But someone like Jeff
- 51:43Bridges, that would be amazing. That's such a
- 51:46good show. That's an amazing show. Like, it would
- 51:51be perfect. He has that cool kind of older...
- 51:55vibe that would just be a little bit more like
- 51:58chilled and laid back kind of thing yeah i i
- 52:03think they missed an opportunity there also i
- 52:06said this before to you before we started recording
- 52:08uh for a film set in india this is a very white
- 52:12cast It is, yeah. It's an incredibly white cast.
- 52:16Right, so for, like, I guess for the animals,
- 52:20whatever, they're animals. They don't necessarily
- 52:24have a, like, yes, they are Indian animals. But,
- 52:29sure, a snake can sound like that. Sure, a bear
- 52:33can sound like that. Yeah, it's kind of like,
- 52:34it works in the live action as well, doesn't
- 52:37it? Like, Scarlett Johansson's a snake and she's
- 52:39as far from Indian as you can possibly be. But
- 52:41it works because it's an animal, not a person.
- 52:43Exactly. But then the people, there's a couple
- 52:46of them that are just plain old white people.
- 52:51It's kind of doing like a bit of an Indian accent
- 52:54and it is not great. Just a little, yeah. There's
- 53:00one, I think there's one Indian person and she's,
- 53:05it's the mother of Shanti. I thought it would
- 53:08be the mother. And that's it. I'm pretty sure
- 53:11that's it. It's crazy. For a film set in India
- 53:16to have one Indian person in it is... It blows
- 53:19my mind, genuinely. It's John Rhys -Davies of
- 53:25Gimli fame as the father. Once again playing
- 53:29a racially inappropriate character after Raiders
- 53:32of the Lost Ark. But he's great in it. No disrespect
- 53:38to him. He does a good job. He's one of the better
- 53:41performances in the movie. He's very lovely.
- 53:43He's a very good dad in it, isn't he? Yeah. And
- 53:49it's, oh, how do you pronounce this kid's name?
- 53:52Hayley Joel Osment, is it? Yeah, Hayley Joel
- 53:55Osment, the Sixth Sense Kid. Yeah, the Sixth
- 53:57Sense Kid. Wild, I had no idea. I see talking
- 54:02snakes. So when I first heard the voice, I thought
- 54:07it was the... The lady that plays Ash Ketchum
- 54:12from Pokemon. Ah, right, yeah. I could see that.
- 54:17Yeah, because it's a really young Hayley Joel
- 54:20Osment. And I was like, wow, that sounds so familiar.
- 54:23It sounds like Ash. But yeah, it was HJO, who's
- 54:30great. He's really good. Yeah, no disrespect
- 54:33to him. Or Mai Whitman, who's Shanti. Who? Her?
- 54:41she does a decent again like it's not like it's
- 54:46not ragging on the actors they're just doing
- 54:47their job but yeah 100 % we've forgotten one
- 54:50exquisite addition to the cast the vultures have
- 54:54a new friend called Lucky played by Phil Collins
- 54:58Phil Collins of Genesis of drumming fame Phil
- 55:06Collins Tarzan's own That's genuinely mental.
- 55:11Baffling. I didn't even realise that it was actual
- 55:14Phil Collins. He's noticeably not as good as
- 55:19the others in this film. He's done some voice
- 55:21acting... No. I was going to say he's done some
- 55:24before, because he's in one of the Grand Theft
- 55:25Autos, but I think he's in Vice City Stories.
- 55:29That would have been after this. Right, okay.
- 55:33He's not great in it. His character's very obnoxious,
- 55:36to be fair, as well. It's a vulture who's...
- 55:37He's reveling in the fact that Shere Khan's had
- 55:40his legacy taken away and he's just constantly
- 55:43ripping on him. What's the matter? Man got your
- 55:46tongue? Shut up, Phil Collins, you idiot. He's
- 55:52very obnoxious. There's actually a really good
- 55:54scene that I loved in this, which is undone later,
- 55:58where Shere Khan is just letting him... get a
- 56:02few jabs. Oh, man. How fascinating. And then
- 56:06he fucking grabs him by the throat and he's like,
- 56:08isn't it ironic your name is Lucky? And you just
- 56:11see the other vultures fly away as Bill Collins
- 56:14screams out in agony like, ahhh! And like, feathers
- 56:17go flying. It's like, oh my god! It was really
- 56:21good. And then it's just like, I don't know,
- 56:24we've undone it. He's back at the end and he's
- 56:26alive. He has like one scar. Pissed me off. But...
- 56:29It was such a... It was genuinely, like, what
- 56:31a good way to have your villain feel menacing
- 56:33again than have him, like, decimate the comedic
- 56:36relief that I'm sure that, like, while I found
- 56:39him aggravating, I'm sure there's probably kids
- 56:41sitting around like, this guy fucking rips. This
- 56:43guy's awesome. Yeah, yeah. And then check on
- 56:45just a knife. Yeah, a knife. Like, oh. But...
- 56:49What a shame, man. Yeah. They didn't... They
- 56:53brought him back for the sake of having one joke
- 56:56at the end of the movie. Yeah. Cowards. Cowards.
- 57:00What did you think of the look of this one? To
- 57:03me, it feels like the jungle is so lifeless compared
- 57:08to the original. It feels less colourful. It
- 57:12feels less busy. I don't know. There was something
- 57:15about it that just made me feel like, this doesn't
- 57:18look good. It's a bit digitally bland, as some
- 57:22of them are. We've talked about Bambi 2. used
- 57:27a lot of creative measures to overcome the budgetary
- 57:31constraints but this one doesn't do anything
- 57:34it's just very lifeless and like i say digital
- 57:36and clean and it's the one the one note i'll
- 57:40give it is that the shadowing on share con is
- 57:43usually done really well um i read somewhere
- 57:47that they wanted to keep them obscured in darkness
- 57:49to kind of show us fallen grace or whatever which
- 57:52is that's kind of cool i like that idea But other
- 57:57than that, yeah, it's a bit bland looking. Yeah,
- 57:59it's not the best. There's something lost again
- 58:04in the source. There's a couple of parts where
- 58:06you've got the part in the wild song where you've
- 58:12got some 3D animation mixed with 2D. Looks fucking
- 58:15terrible, man. It's like they gave up on the
- 58:192D animation as they were doing it. So you've
- 58:22got this swinging camera in 3D. And they animate
- 58:26the 2D animals and stuff. And it looks fucking
- 58:30shocking. It's awful. And they've done this before.
- 58:35They've done it with Fantasia 2000. They have
- 58:373D and 2D, and it looks fucking great. They've
- 58:40got it in other films, I'm sure. I can't remember
- 58:45which ones. Tarzan was before this. Yeah. So
- 58:49they've done this stuff before, and it looked
- 58:51great. It just seemed like they just didn't care.
- 58:55yeah uh like all respect to the constraints you've
- 59:00got off the budget but this is a this is um a
- 59:03fiat record released one so you have to put more
- 59:05fucking effort in if you want people to go to
- 59:06the cinema to watch this on the weekend the daredevil's
- 59:09out as well exactly you want me to not go see
- 59:11colin farrell rub his little forehead and go
- 59:13a bullseye and you want me to go see this instead
- 59:18you got to put some fucking work in yeah um i
- 59:23mean Dude, to be fair, 20 million. That's a lot
- 59:29of money. It's a fucking shitload of money. Like,
- 59:33come on. I wouldn't be surprised if a big five
- 59:36of that is in John Goodman's back pocket. Oh,
- 59:39100%. Like, so much of that just went straight
- 59:43into John Goodman. All of it went to, like, Hayley
- 59:47Joel Osment's parents and John Goodman's pocket
- 59:51as well. Yeah. Crazy. who's clearly just been
- 59:55cast because someone at Disney was like, oh,
- 59:58we've had a big bear in a film recently, haven't
- 1:00:00we? Sully, that's close enough. Oh, what's his
- 1:00:02name? Fuck yeah. I did like, I don't know who
- 1:00:07plays Bagheera in this, but I liked him. I thought
- 1:00:10he was not spot on to the first one, but he manages
- 1:00:15to get the tone pretty well. There's a really
- 1:00:18fun bit where Bagheera sees, basically Baloo
- 1:00:22has the little kid. On his shoulder. Oh, yeah.
- 1:00:26And Bagheera sees him like running through the
- 1:00:28jungle with this little kid. He's like, no, not
- 1:00:31another one. Yeah, his face literally drops.
- 1:00:34He's like, oh. That was fun. Yeah, I enjoyed
- 1:00:39that. But yeah, dude, this is just the, it's
- 1:00:42just the first one again. But crap. Like. They
- 1:00:47do a bit of a. more intense climax with the Shere
- 1:00:51Khan chase. What did you think of the ending?
- 1:00:53Do you know what? I kind of enjoyed the hitting
- 1:00:57the symbols to try and confuse him kind of thing.
- 1:01:00And it was all right, but it kind of felt pointless
- 1:01:04because it's like they're all pulling him in
- 1:01:07different directions. What's the end goal there?
- 1:01:13yeah like they have like a little chase which
- 1:01:15is quite intense and like well done but then
- 1:01:17they get to like that little bit where there's
- 1:01:19just gongs around and they just yeah the temple
- 1:01:21gong at a different bit and it's like i don't
- 1:01:25think shere khan would be getting confused by
- 1:01:27you hitting a gong and it goes on for like because
- 1:01:30the thing is good minute yeah he knows that mogli's
- 1:01:34there he knows that thingy's there as well he
- 1:01:38knows that all three of them are there Yeah.
- 1:01:41So, like, why would he be getting confused? Choose
- 1:01:43one. Choose one and eat them. Yeah. Easy. Like,
- 1:01:48oh, man, it's so stupid. I think his defeat in
- 1:01:51this one is also, like, just so basic. Like,
- 1:01:56the first one has that kind of almost metaphor
- 1:01:59of, like, Mowgli's finally using man's power
- 1:02:01against him. Yeah. And kind of accepting who
- 1:02:03he is. Whereas this one's just, like, a rock
- 1:02:06fell on him. Yeah. Okay. He falls in a lava.
- 1:02:10And then doesn't fall into lava. In the middle
- 1:02:13of the Indian jungle, there's a river of lava.
- 1:02:16He falls on a rock there and another rock traps
- 1:02:19him on the rock forever, it seems like. Yeah.
- 1:02:23Because Jungle Book 3 got axed. Yeah, and then
- 1:02:26Lucky comes back. seemingly out of Shere Khan's
- 1:02:31stomach. Maybe that's where he was. Maybe that's
- 1:02:34how he comes back when Shere Khan falls. He lands
- 1:02:36on his back and just goes, lucky comes out. He
- 1:02:42is lucky. But yeah, so then Phil Collins just
- 1:02:46roasts Shere Khan for eternity, I guess. A fate
- 1:02:50worse than death, to be fair. Yeah. Also, how
- 1:02:53long until that little platform just sinks into
- 1:02:56lava and Shere Khan just burns? Yeah, I mean,
- 1:02:59in real life, I don't think you can be that close
- 1:03:01to lava without just incinerating. Cooking. Yeah,
- 1:03:03that mouth. So basically, a part of the temple
- 1:03:08has a lion's face. Carved out of stone in that
- 1:03:13kind of... Yeah, a tiger. And it falls on Shere
- 1:03:16Khan and traps him. That would essentially just
- 1:03:18become an oven. Cooked cat, baby! Do you know
- 1:03:22the brazen bull? oh shit yeah the big it's like
- 1:03:27a big metal bowl that someone invented where
- 1:03:29you'd like put someone in and then heat it up
- 1:03:31to kill them in the most torturous way possible
- 1:03:33and then the the sounds go through a tube so
- 1:03:36it sounds like a ball but this time it's just
- 1:03:39him burning and he's just like there's a really
- 1:03:45um i actually really this sounds so silly because
- 1:03:48like it's such a nothing thing but There's a
- 1:03:51really good bit where Shere Khan leaps at Mowgli
- 1:03:53right before he gets, quote -unquote, defeated
- 1:03:55by slipping, which isn't really whatever. He
- 1:03:58does the leap, and then Tony Jade does that little,
- 1:04:03like, he goes, like, Mowgli. But I think it's
- 1:04:06the first time in this entire, quote -unquote,
- 1:04:11franchise that he's ever said his name, which
- 1:04:13I kind of like. Like, he's finally put respect
- 1:04:16on his name. He's always, like, Mankur, but yeah.
- 1:04:19Yeah. So I kind of like that. Yeah. And then
- 1:04:23he's dead. Well, he's alive. He's dead inside.
- 1:04:28Stupid film, man. And then the movie ends with,
- 1:04:31as you said earlier, Mowgli finally realizes
- 1:04:34that he can just walk over the river and go see
- 1:04:36the animals that he likes whenever he wants.
- 1:04:38And that's how the film ends. Yeah. And it's
- 1:04:42the same. It's the end of the first one again.
- 1:04:46It's the end of the first one, but with the thing
- 1:04:49that... Anyone else could have figured out where
- 1:04:51it's like, you can just go visit your friends.
- 1:04:52You can pop over the side and go say hello. They
- 1:04:56were walking distance. Fucking hell. What? Yeah.
- 1:05:00Oh, before we finish, Smash Mouth did a cover
- 1:05:03of fucking, what was it? Bare Necessities. Yeah.
- 1:05:07Or was it I Want To Be Like You? Can't remember.
- 1:05:10One of the two, because that's the only two songs
- 1:05:11they care about. The Elephants Are In The Swan,
- 1:05:13which is nice to see, but they didn't get the
- 1:05:15little song. Yeah. Because we talked last week
- 1:05:18about how Disney at this time have a lot of military
- 1:05:23goofball characters with the elephants. I might
- 1:05:26see them again, but they weren't in it much.
- 1:05:28Yeah. The vultures are back. They don't get a
- 1:05:30song. Nope. The two songs forever and ever and
- 1:05:33ever and ever and ever until hell freezes over.
- 1:05:36Exactly. Until Shere Khan's river of lava freezes
- 1:05:38over. Yeah, I'm still... I'm going to say the
- 1:05:42same thing. I'm excited to see when they actually
- 1:05:45try for these... uh disney sequels like genuinely
- 1:05:49i'm just so curious when we're going to get to
- 1:05:52that cut off point where they actually put some
- 1:05:54fucking effort in and i'm wondering if it's after
- 1:05:57lassiter's guillotine well as you said recently
- 1:06:01um because of the way we're doing these we're
- 1:06:05getting such a weird order of like this one came
- 1:06:07up here and there and this is definitely in the
- 1:06:10period of time where it's like make some money
- 1:06:12it's prime put the shit out on the wall kids
- 1:06:17will lap it up it's fine and it worked they made
- 1:06:21nearly 200 million from a film that cost them
- 1:06:2520 million yeah um it is weird that this one
- 1:06:29is one of the ones they put in the cinema because
- 1:06:30i can't figure out what it is about this other
- 1:06:33than potentially like jungle books popular i
- 1:06:36can't figure out what they thought like about
- 1:06:38this whether like this deserves to be in the
- 1:06:40cinema same for return to neverland as well it's
- 1:06:42like yeah weird decision making so strange man
- 1:06:45like yeah i i have no idea i would not be able
- 1:06:49to tell you why they did this um this sucks i
- 1:06:54really i just did not enjoy it at all yeah i
- 1:06:58just i the only thing i can think of is just
- 1:07:00looking at like which ones would be most popular
- 1:07:02and like which ones would like from the original
- 1:07:05that's the only thing i can think of yeah Have
- 1:07:08you got some trivia about this? Not much, to
- 1:07:11be honest. There's not really a whole lot. We
- 1:07:13did mention earlier, I mentioned in passing,
- 1:07:15that King Louis isn't legally allowed to be in
- 1:07:17this. And that's due to the voice actor, Louis
- 1:07:21Prima's widow, was very unhappy with the fact
- 1:07:25that... We've mentioned King Louis is in Tailspin
- 1:07:28and he's in Jungle Cups and all this. jim cummins
- 1:07:32did the voice and she thought the the voice was
- 1:07:34a bit too spot on of his distinctive voice so
- 1:07:37she sued them because of it and this was all
- 1:07:40going on whilst the jungle book 2 was gestating
- 1:07:43so uh they just legally decided let's just not
- 1:07:47use them to avoid any issues wow which is i i
- 1:07:51had no idea that's crazy and it's it's very weird
- 1:07:55because again i don't get if if you can't use
- 1:07:58them that's fine Don't keep referencing him and
- 1:08:01don't go to his lair and all this stuff. Because
- 1:08:03he's a very notable exclusion from the film.
- 1:08:06Yeah. That's so strange. Yeah. I think House
- 1:08:10of Mouse was one of the things that they got
- 1:08:13sued for as well. Because I think he was on that
- 1:08:15as well. Really? Wow. So no Louis allowed on
- 1:08:19this. No Louis. This is also... I don't think
- 1:08:23either of us would agree with this. Even though
- 1:08:25we didn't like it. But this is the lowest...
- 1:08:28and worst reviewed Disney animated film on Rotten
- 1:08:30Tomatoes. It has 18 % approval rating. The next
- 1:08:33lowest is Planes at 25%. Wow. Yeah. I definitely
- 1:08:40don't think it's the worst one. Do you know the
- 1:08:43thing that's annoying about it? It's just, it's
- 1:08:45not even, like, I hated Lady and the Tramp 2.
- 1:08:50I hated 101 Dalmatians 2. For me, they were bad
- 1:08:54in, like, a fun way kind of thing you know what
- 1:08:58i mean like this is just bad and also boring
- 1:09:03so it's just it's not even that fun to talk about
- 1:09:08kind of thing it's just like just less the middle
- 1:09:12of the road and it's just like i wouldn't say
- 1:09:15it's i i agree i wouldn't say it's the worst
- 1:09:17one which is kind of crazy but it's just boring
- 1:09:21man it's just I think, to be fair, I think I've
- 1:09:26just taken a look. Cinderella 2's got a lower
- 1:09:28rating, so I think it means theatrically released,
- 1:09:30which kind of makes a little bit more sense,
- 1:09:33but I'm still kind of surprised it's the lowest
- 1:09:35rated theatrically released one. Did you think
- 1:09:37this was worse than 101 Dalmatians 2? No. Really?
- 1:09:43Damn, you hated that movie. There's something
- 1:09:45about it, man. I don't like it. it's good piece
- 1:09:50of shit no it's not it's not good i'm sorry i'm
- 1:09:54gonna come around and i'm gonna go five stars
- 1:09:56no and then the only other note i've got is that
- 1:09:59this is um being phil collins said this is one
- 1:10:02of the his four favorite films that he worked
- 1:10:04on uh along with tarzan balto and um brother
- 1:10:09bear which i think is probably all the other
- 1:10:12films he worked on i was gonna say I don't know
- 1:10:17what else he would have done. Fucking hell. This
- 1:10:20was the first film released under the Disney
- 1:10:24Tune Studios label. Ah. So there you go. It's
- 1:10:31a big deal historically then. It really is. Phil
- 1:10:35Collins is in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. And Hook.
- 1:10:40What? Ugh. I don't even like J .J. Bang Bang
- 1:10:45that much, but how can you be in Jungle Book
- 1:10:472 and say that? And be like, this is one of my
- 1:10:49favourites, baby! Prick. He's also, fun story,
- 1:10:58apparently he's the reason that Grand Theft Auto
- 1:11:01Vice City Stories doesn't have any re -releases.
- 1:11:05Apparently he's the reason. Oh, for fuck's sake.
- 1:11:08What a prick. What a prick that guy is. Because
- 1:11:11he won't license it, yeah. What a knob. Anyway.
- 1:11:17Because the others you can get on PS3. You can
- 1:11:20get them as an app and stuff like that. Yeah,
- 1:11:24yeah, yeah. Not Vice City Stories. How dare you?
- 1:11:27How dare you even think that you would get that?
- 1:11:29You need to be approved by Phil Collins. Fuck's
- 1:11:32sake. What a loser. So how else did Jungle Book
- 1:11:39carry on after this bad boy? Well, we've talked
- 1:11:43about all the other ways it's continued, but
- 1:11:45the only other thing is that it was meant to
- 1:11:48originally get a third one, probably because
- 1:11:51this one was fairly well regarded. No, sorry.
- 1:11:55Probably because this one was fairly popular
- 1:11:57at the box office. Yeah. So the sequel would
- 1:12:00have been Baloo and Shere Khan get captured and
- 1:12:03sold to a circus. So Mowgli, Shanti, the little
- 1:12:08kid in this one, which is like Raja or something,
- 1:12:09the Giver would have saved them. Weirdly, I don't
- 1:12:13understand this, but weirdly, apparently during
- 1:12:15the movie, Shere Khan would regret his hatred
- 1:12:17against humanity. because they rescue him but
- 1:12:20it's like yeah okay that one that one kid rescued
- 1:12:23you but you have just been kidnapped and put
- 1:12:25you've been kidnapped and put into the russian
- 1:12:27circus like what are you talking about that would
- 1:12:31make me more angry yeah if anything like it would
- 1:12:35it would prove me right uh yeah you might be
- 1:12:38like this all right this one kid is all right
- 1:12:40but yeah mostly you're okay but the rest of you
- 1:12:43i'm gonna kill all of humanity yeah And then
- 1:12:48the fourth one would be Shae Khan gets the nukes.
- 1:12:52He gets the codes. But it got cancelled in the
- 1:12:58great culling of Disney sequels with John Lasseter's
- 1:13:03guillotine. The guillotine never misses. You
- 1:13:10know what? It's different. You can't say it's
- 1:13:14not different. Yeah, it's not... I think it would
- 1:13:18have been way better. It could have been... Do
- 1:13:20you know what this could have been? It could
- 1:13:21have been The Jungle Books Cinderella 3. It could
- 1:13:26have been, yeah. I like the idea. I think it's
- 1:13:29way more interesting than this shit. Yeah, definitely.
- 1:13:34I don't know if I care about, like, Reform and
- 1:13:36Shere Khan or whatever, but it's certainly different,
- 1:13:39and that's something that you can't say about
- 1:13:4198 % of these movies. Yeah. Which is just regurgitated
- 1:13:45the first one. And 98 % of this movie, which
- 1:13:49is just regurgitated as the first one. Yeah.
- 1:13:53Oh, God. That's a shame. Tony J. also passed
- 1:13:57away at this point. Wikipedia would have you
- 1:13:59believe that his death is the reason that this
- 1:14:01didn't go ahead, but it's not the case. I think
- 1:14:05they had already lined up a replacement. Yeah,
- 1:14:08you were saying that they'd lined up someone
- 1:14:10to replace him, which is heartless, but needed.
- 1:14:15Yeah, I mean, Tony Jay did it already to someone
- 1:14:17else. Yeah, exactly. He's not going to be where
- 1:14:23the buck stops. Yeah, 100%. The jungle buck.
- 1:14:28Oh, and on that beautiful little fucking, what
- 1:14:33would you call it? I don't know. Metaphor? I
- 1:14:36don't know. Pun. That's the one. I forgot English
- 1:14:40for a second. We go over to our ranking machine.
- 1:14:46Holy shit. What's up? Clint Howard plays the
- 1:14:50elephant in the first one. You know Ron Howard's
- 1:14:54ugly as fuck brother. Do you know what I mean?
- 1:15:02No. Google him. You'll know what I mean when
- 1:15:05I say he's ugly as fuck. Flint Howard. Clint.
- 1:15:08Clint Howard. Oh. Oh, what an unfort... Oh. It
- 1:15:14looks like he's melting. How did Bryce Dallas
- 1:15:17Howard come from that gene pool? Like, she's
- 1:15:20not his daughter, but like... Yeah, but... You
- 1:15:22know what I mean? Yeah. What the fuck? Oh, now
- 1:15:26I'm looking at the small Grinch kid. How? He
- 1:15:30came up as... People also search for... Speaking
- 1:15:34of ugly as fuck people... It says people also
- 1:15:37search for, and it's Ron Howard, Rance Howard,
- 1:15:40Bryce Dallas Howard, a couple more people, and
- 1:15:43then Josh Ryan Evans. Of all the people you could
- 1:15:46have clicked on to look at there... Well, I was
- 1:15:48like, what's wrong with your face? Okay. Anyway,
- 1:15:55yeah, let's... Put it into the ranking machine.
- 1:15:58Have we made any upgrades since the salting the
- 1:16:01fresh water? I think it just puts a bit of sewage
- 1:16:04in the water as well. Well, it now also, like,
- 1:16:07because, like, we needed to keep the furnace
- 1:16:09inside it going, it now also has, like, two giant
- 1:16:11saws on it that cuts down trees in the nearby
- 1:16:13jungle and then rams the trees into it, like
- 1:16:17the jungle that our little friends here live
- 1:16:21in. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's just a complete deforestation
- 1:16:23machine. It's interesting because it actually
- 1:16:25has a compartment on the bottom where we can
- 1:16:28put new tree seeds in it or reseed as it goes,
- 1:16:31but we just haven't bothered. But we never do
- 1:16:32that. No, no, no, no. It's also got solar panels
- 1:16:35on it, but they're turned off. You smashed one
- 1:16:37of them, I think. I did, yeah. You said it was
- 1:16:40woke. We also perfected nuclear fusion and it's
- 1:16:47clean energy, but we just don't turn it on. No,
- 1:16:50it's not worth it. It's not worth the effort.
- 1:16:52nah so yeah if you don't know we have four rankings
- 1:16:55around here uh we start at the top we've got
- 1:16:58disney classics this is a film that lives up
- 1:17:02to the original's hype uh it could be its own
- 1:17:05like disney classic disney would be proud to
- 1:17:09slap that film with a disney classics edition
- 1:17:13then we go down to diamond edition diamond edition
- 1:17:16is great it's really good it's a good film it's
- 1:17:19not quite up to the standard of a disney classic
- 1:17:22but this is one that you will watch you will
- 1:17:24love um if you're buying it it's got like a nice
- 1:17:27little slip disc or something like that oh maybe
- 1:17:30some special features on there um from there
- 1:17:34we go down to straight to video and straight
- 1:17:36to video you know it's all right it's the standard
- 1:17:39disney sequel that you you kind of think of it's
- 1:17:43it's one of those that just never comes out in
- 1:17:46the cinema it's just straight to like it says
- 1:17:50on the tin it's straight to video straight to
- 1:17:52dvd it keeps the kids entertained on a rainy
- 1:17:55sunday exactly but as andy said with 101 dalmatians
- 1:17:59if there was a power cut he wouldn't run rush
- 1:18:02back to it and last one is bargain bin not even
- 1:18:05straight to video you know they've been marked
- 1:18:08down so much they're 10p and they're in a bucket
- 1:18:11filled with poo and all sorts of things And this
- 1:18:21is where you're finding Return to Netherland,
- 1:18:23Lady and the Tramp 2, and Cinderella 2. No one
- 1:18:29wants to be found in there. So Andy, what are
- 1:18:32you thinking with Jungle Book 2? Where are you
- 1:18:35putting it? It's tricky. I would be lying if
- 1:18:38I said I didn't have any fun with this at all.
- 1:18:42So looking at those bargain bin films like Lady
- 1:18:45and the Tramp 2 and Cinderella 2, which I just
- 1:18:46hated so much. This one was less offensive than
- 1:18:51that, but it had nothing much to offer other
- 1:18:53than a few good scenes and a good performance
- 1:18:55from Tony Jay. And Jim Cummins' car, to be fair.
- 1:18:59I think this one, for me, is going to be... It's
- 1:19:04so much worse than all the other ones we've put
- 1:19:06in the straight -to -DVD, though. But it's so
- 1:19:08much better than all the ones we've put in the
- 1:19:09bargain bin, in my opinion. I'm going to say
- 1:19:12straight -to -DVD. I'm going to be generous.
- 1:19:15And say straight to DVD. Based on the fact that.
- 1:19:18I had some fun with it. Some of the characters
- 1:19:21were. None of the characters I hated by the way.
- 1:19:25We talk about. Scamp was atrocious as a character.
- 1:19:29But Mowgli's fun in this still. Baloo's miscast.
- 1:19:32But he's okay. Shanti's fine. Yeah I think. I
- 1:19:39think for me straight to DVD. It's not amazing.
- 1:19:42It's not even really good. but I didn't want
- 1:19:47to die while I was watching it. Fair enough.
- 1:19:50Yeah. Man, I'm so tempted to put it in bargain
- 1:19:52bin, but I agree. It's not as bad as those ones.
- 1:19:57And it's annoying because if I did put it in
- 1:20:02bargain bin, I would say it goes at the top of
- 1:20:05the bargain bin kind of thing. Like, I wouldn't
- 1:20:08mind that at all. So I'm going to agree with
- 1:20:12you and I'm going to say straight to video. but
- 1:20:16i'm gonna say it's bottom bottom of it yeah i'll
- 1:20:22say it's bottom of straight to video even though
- 1:20:24that pains me to put 101 dalmatians 2 above it
- 1:20:28at least of 101 dalmatians 2 even if you didn't
- 1:20:31like it at least you have the comfort of knowing
- 1:20:33that someone liked it enough not i didn't i liked
- 1:20:36it as such a generous term as well but like yeah
- 1:20:40I liked it more than this. I think we put it
- 1:20:43at the bottom of straight to video. So it's like
- 1:20:47teetering. If you can picture a bargain bin right
- 1:20:52there and then it's like on the edge. It's on
- 1:20:55the shelf. It's literally like on the edge. About
- 1:21:00to go into the bargain bin. I think that's exactly
- 1:21:03where we put it. It's like when you order a thing
- 1:21:05in a vending machine and it doesn't come out
- 1:21:07fully. Yeah, there could be another film that
- 1:21:12comes along and pushes it in. It is like one
- 1:21:18wrong move away from being in there. Oh, 100%.
- 1:21:21If it was a minute longer, if there was one more
- 1:21:24lucky joke, if there was one more second of terrible
- 1:21:29Bare Necessities remixes, it would have been
- 1:21:33into the bargain bin. Yeah, yeah, 100%. There
- 1:21:37we go. It's ranked. You're on thin ice, buddy.
- 1:21:40You're on thin ice. You're going to fall in there
- 1:21:43if I figure something else out. It's going in
- 1:21:46there. How about some Letterboxd reviews? Yeah,
- 1:21:53I'd be curious as to what people thought of this
- 1:21:55one. Let's have a gander. Well, well, well, well.
- 1:21:59This has... Eight fans, which is a whole lot
- 1:22:04less. So only eight people on the entirety of
- 1:22:07Letterboxd have this in their favourites. It
- 1:22:10has a weighted average of 2 .5. That's higher
- 1:22:14than I thought. Crazy high. However, the most
- 1:22:18reviews that it has are two stars. So it's 8
- 1:22:22,459 two -star ratings. It has 1 ,106... Five
- 1:22:29star ratings, which is 3 % of the people that
- 1:22:32have watched this. Fucking hell. Who are you?
- 1:22:34And how can we get you off Earth? As always,
- 1:22:38Shafralas comes in number one as the first review
- 1:22:43on there. Why is he watching these? I don't know.
- 1:22:49Two and a half stars. And he says, wow, that
- 1:22:52sure was the first movie again. Really? I agree.
- 1:22:56We've got half a star. From Anya Bo, who says,
- 1:23:02Avoid this mess at all costs. The guy lived with
- 1:23:04wolves and other wild animals. He just suddenly
- 1:23:07lives as a normal human in a village? I think
- 1:23:09not. Which, we forgot to say. Good point. We
- 1:23:13forgot to say, the wolves aren't even in this.
- 1:23:16Oh, yeah, they're not. That's crazy. Why are
- 1:23:19they not in it at all? That's his family, man.
- 1:23:22He doesn't want to go see his parents? The hell?
- 1:23:25What a dickhead. What the hell? Anya also says,
- 1:23:28I regret wasting 72 minutes of my life for this.
- 1:23:31I just don't get why Disney always feels the
- 1:23:33need to release sequels to the movie that sure
- 1:23:38don't need any. Two and a half stars from Ray.
- 1:23:41Smash mouth cover of I Wanna Be Like You. That's
- 1:23:44all they have to say. One and a half stars by
- 1:23:47Ketchup. Ranjan is an absolute menace to society.
- 1:23:51Is that the little kid? That is the little kid.
- 1:23:53I liked him. Yeah, he was alright. He was fine.
- 1:23:57Oh my god, this is such a fucking wild take.
- 1:24:01Two and a half stars from Wild Willow. The most
- 1:24:05surprising thing about this movie is that it's
- 1:24:08better than the first one. Whoa! What is her
- 1:24:12problem? In the bin. In the letterboxd bin, I
- 1:24:16think. It would be one thing if she, like...
- 1:24:19really like this one and for the first one but
- 1:24:22i hate not like this one and then oh you've wound
- 1:24:26me up crazy well i'll leave you on this one two
- 1:24:31stars by mark uh kaiser man and he says i was
- 1:24:34willing to accept this cash grab sequel for what
- 1:24:36it is an exact rehash of the first one uh with
- 1:24:40one new song and one absolutely terrible one
- 1:24:43but then shanti and baloo started talking to
- 1:24:46each other which destroyed the uniqueness of
- 1:24:48mogli speaking to animals because he was raised
- 1:24:50in the jungle which is what yes i thought i forgot
- 1:24:54to say that before that's a good point yeah i
- 1:24:57didn't even think about that yeah which is uh
- 1:25:00uh it would also because that i mean it the film
- 1:25:05could have been simply solved and most of this
- 1:25:08conflict wouldn't have been necessary if baloo
- 1:25:10just went hey it's me baloo When Shanti, like,
- 1:25:15sees a wild animal in the forest that's tickling
- 1:25:19and having fun with Mowgli kind of thing. I think
- 1:25:22that's about it, isn't it? Yeah. What a disappointing
- 1:25:26film. What a disappointing film. Disappointing
- 1:25:28film, yeah. But I like that universe, so it was
- 1:25:33still fun to talk about Jungle Book. Agreed.
- 1:25:35I really enjoyed talking about the first one
- 1:25:37with you. Yes. Yeah. Oh, dear. But yeah. That's
- 1:25:43that. What are we doing next time? Do you not
- 1:25:47remember? Nope. Well, now I'll tell you. We are
- 1:25:50watching... Sorry. We are watching the first
- 1:25:56Disney sequel next time. So we are going to be
- 1:26:00watching The Rescuers Down Under. Oh, cool. Interesting.
- 1:26:06What's your history with The Rescuers? Nada.
- 1:26:10I haven't seen any of it. same no ideas um so
- 1:26:15i'm curious me too uh one of our loyal listeners
- 1:26:20josh is a real big fan of the rescuers okay um
- 1:26:24he says the second one is even better oh bold
- 1:26:29claim so bold claim for something i i i think
- 1:26:37they're meant to be good as well like um like
- 1:26:39i don't it's not a straight to dvd one it's a
- 1:26:42it's a proper theatrical disney classic release
- 1:26:45so yeah i hope that it's going to be more interesting
- 1:26:49than uh than this at least cool okay well that's
- 1:26:53fun i'm looking forward to that right should
- 1:26:55we say some thank yous oh yeah so firstly as
- 1:27:01always thank you to Joe Terone for our wonderful
- 1:27:04music we love it so much yes yes we do and thank
- 1:27:09you to Jordan GR producer who helped create the
