- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Lock up your garbage.
- 0:01SPEAKER_01: You know, just having a lid on it's not gonna do it.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: It's a bear.
- 0:04SPEAKER_01: It can rip your head off your neck.
- 0:05SPEAKER_01: It can open your garbage can lid, lock it up, clean your outdoor grills, because it's gonna open it up and it's gonna slurp it up.
- 0:12SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: You don't even think about that.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: You really don't.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: And and you think, okay, I got my garbage can under control.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: That's where all the food waste goes.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: But your recycling bin, a lot of those plastic clamshells and stuff that you want to be a good human and you want to recycle them, well, they had food in them.
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: And guess what that means?
- 0:28SPEAKER_00: They smell like food.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Recycling bins are not off the table here.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: You have to lock up and secure those things.
- 0:34SPEAKER_00: Pet food is another thing that people don't think of.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: You got some kibble outside for your dog.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: You know, uh bird feeders.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: You think a bear doesn't like a seed?
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: Man, if you've ever seen bear crap in the woods, it's literally like they've been only living off blackberries.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: Even if they've been eating fish, seeds, they love them.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Welcome into the PW podcast.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Sitting here looking at Marcus Bridges over there in Eugene, Oregon.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: Of course, I'm just outside of the beautiful city of Portland, where we talk everything to do with the Pacific Northwest, whether it's Washington, Idaho, or Oregon.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: You know, they include British Columbia in that when you uh when you Google what the Pacific Northwest is, which is kind of weird, right?
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean, geographically, I guess it makes sense, but we are really serious about our borders in this country, Drew, and it doesn't matter if it's just Canada, our buddies to the north.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Uh, there's a line drawn in the sand there, and it's for a reason.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: I tend to think of it Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, pretty standard in my mind.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: And it's funny that uh that we care about our borders, but you know who cares more about Riffraff coming into their country?
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: Canada.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: You know, if you have a DUI, they'll turn you around and send you home?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's really weird because we all remember that uh that scene from that 70s show, what are you doing in Canada, eh?
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: And and it's like, but that actually happens when you go up there and you're driving through the border.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: And the first time I went to Canada, Drew, I was 18 years old and I was going there to drink like it was the end of times.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And it's really hard to look a law enforcement officer in the face and tell them, I'm coming up here to drink because they won't let me do it down there yet.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: Um but uh yeah, it's uh it's pretty serious.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of things that they won't let you in for.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And hey, last time I went to Canada, I could still get in with a social security card.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Can't do that anymore.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: Gotta have that passport.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that ship has sailed.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I um we used to go to Whistler every year.
- 2:41SPEAKER_01: I loved going to Whistler, especially as like a 20-something.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And a friend of ours named Todd, Todd had too much to drink and was already a bit of a meat biscuit and got himself into some trouble where the Canadian mounted police, the Mounties, came to deal with him and he thought he would strong arm one of them and take off running through the village.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Well, they brought the Mounties in full effect and basically shut down the city to get a hold of this American riffraff.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: And when they got a hold of him, they took his ass to the border and left him there and told him to never come back to Canada.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, he was 86.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: I love it.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: And just putting it in the state of Washington's hands, like he's your problem now, you deal with him.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: This is on you guys.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: And when it comes to um other people's problems that become yours, this family, Marcus.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know if you saw this, but did you see the family in Idaho that encountered a group of bears at their house?
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: No, I didn't hear anything about this.
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: Oh my God, this is crazy.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: A local family is actually recovering today after a situation happened where there were bears, two juveniles and a so.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: You're a country guy.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: What is a so?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: Sal.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: And that is that's gonna be that's how much I know.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: That's gonna be your female mama bear, which might be the biggest concern already in this story, Drew.
- 4:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, it definitely is.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: And I thought that's what you were gonna say, some sort of a parental.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: I just didn't know if that was the mom or the dad.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I I grew up where there was a ton of concrete.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: Um, but this is nuts, though.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: So these two baby bears and mama bear were hanging around these people's property for days, and they were uh attacking their chickens and messing with their dogs, and so they kept uh calling like the Department of Wildlife and be like, dude, can you get these guys out of here?
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: And they kind of softballed it.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: They asked the people who lived there to please do not shoot the bears.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: They set up some traps on the prim perimeter of the property and kind of figured that that would be it.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: Well, that was until one of the kids, there's kids 14 and nine years old.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: One of them wakes up in the middle of the night and thinks that she hears a human being growling or grunting outside of her window.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: And apparently, this is a thing that when a bear does its soft grunt, it does sound like a human.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: And the way they had the house set up is they didn't have true AC, so they had a swamp cooler set up in the window of the girl's room.
- 5:24SPEAKER_01: Well, when she went to the window, she thought that she saw a person and kind of took a step back and then realized that that person was actually one of these juvenile bears.
- 5:35SPEAKER_01: Oh no.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: So she takes off running for her parents' room where she swings the door open and tells them to come quick.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: There's a bear at my window.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: And when they get to the door, so the dad hops up and without thinking goes running through the house.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: Well, the bears are no longer at the window and have come through the back door of the house.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, dude.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: This is straight out of a horror movie.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: So this is what's crazy, dude.
- 6:02SPEAKER_01: The the dad, who doesn't have time to think or go grab his gun, comes directly at this bear and tackles it out the door into the yard where a fight ensues.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: Then the mom comes out to try and help him, and these bears are attacking both the mom and the dad.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: Now the kids at this point are trying to hold the dog back, which it's not working.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And as that goes on, the dog does manage to scare the bears to where they kind of scurried away.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And this guy was so hurt that eventually he ends up getting life lighted, but they were able to contact a neighbor who starts firing shots trying to scare the bears away because when they called 911, the bears were loitering so much that the ambulance couldn't get to the house.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, completely insane.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Now, the these guys are, you know, the laceration on the guy, I guess it's all the way down to his bone when these bears take swings at him.
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: He ends up having to get life flighted, and now there's like a massive go fund me to try and you know take care of this family.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: But imagine that that you're so you're in such fight or flight mode, and you're here to protect your family, that instead of you know going to find the gun, you just attack a bear.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Real uh real like base or instinct there, Drew.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: And and this is terrifying.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Um, and listen, we are we're doing this show for people that occupy bear country, okay?
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: That is whether or not you see it in Oregon, which you don't, um, I've hunted in Oregon for my entire life, uh, 30 years in the woods at this point in time.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: I've seen two bears, and both of them were tucking behind a bush hundreds of yards away, and you never see them again after that.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It's not really the same in Idaho and in places in Washington where these bears will come into populated areas this time of year because they are hungry and they're trying to fatten up.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, I have a cousin Drew that is a wildlife biologist up in central Washington, and he has joined me for podcasts before to talk about this.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: I just want to throw this out there for anybody that might be worried is listening to this in a smaller rural town where bears are a thing.
- 8:27SPEAKER_00: Check out bearwise.org.
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: It is entirely there to help you prep your property and your home this time of year to try to keep the bears away because this is where it can go.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: You you don't think, well, what's a bear gonna see a house and just come in?
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because in that bear's mind, that house is a refrigerator and it's stock full of all the things that they want.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: So this is, I mean, terrifying.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: If this guy would have been wrestling with a grizzly bear instead of a black bear, Drew, I don't think we're talking about a life flight.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: We're talking about kids that just saw their dad die in their front lawn.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: And we're lucky that that's a uh it was a pit bull mix that was involved in the the saving of the guy.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: So that's a dog that's here to brawl if it needs to brawl.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: And they're lucky they didn't have a little poodle in there.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: Everybody was gonna get swiped.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, man.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And this is another thing, too, is it what outdoorsmen will tell you is the one thing that you want to avoid is ending up in the space between a mama bear and her cubs because she will stop at nothing to protect those those uh cubs.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And if you've already been the aggressor in the situation, she's not stopping until you're not moving anymore or until you can scare her away.
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: And thank God they had the dog and uh uh you know Yosemite Sam over there, the neighbor who was just firing them off into the air.
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: I love that as a deterrent, but uh not where you want to have to be in a populated area, right?
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Firing guns into the air.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: That's not safe either.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: And with this situation, the victims, it's not their fault, but it's humans' fault.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Because first things, let's start off with the, you know, the people who were called to deal with the problem, the the wildlife people, the ones who are supposed to deal with these animals.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I feel like the red tape is more designed to help the animal than the human.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: It's like, oh, just try and stay away from him.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: Whatever you do, don't shoot him.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna shoot it in the face if it comes near my kid.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I'm going to blast it in the face, and I'm gonna stand over it like reservoir dogs.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Like, are you kidding me?
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Prosecute me later.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: At least my kid will be alive.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: That's the first problem.
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and a big one too, Drew.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: And I've seen it for multiple kinds of wildlife and multiple conflicts that happen with that kind of wildlife.
- 10:53SPEAKER_00: You know, if you can prove, Drew, that a wolf came onto your property and killed a cow, the first method in the state of Oregon that they will let you do to try to keep wolves off your property is to hang a ribbon, an orange or a red ribbon, about 36 inches off the ground, and then every five feet you can hang another ribbon vertically from that.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: To keep the wolves out! It doesn't work, and neither does you coming over and going, well, I mean, the little ones are kind of cute.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Maybe we can just let them have some garbage and they'll go away.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: No, they won't.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: They'll keep coming back.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: And again, very close to this.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I talk to my cousin all the time.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: His one of his jobs is to haze bears out of town or trap them in big corrugated pipe traps so that they can transport them back out into the wilderness.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: And you have to be proactive about this.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: You gotta think of them like raccoons.
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: If there's one little crack in the in the exterior where they can get in and eat, they're gonna get in and they're gonna eat everything until you make them go away.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: And that's where it's also a human error because these types of attacks and situations are on the rise because bears are becoming more and more used to human food.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And, you know, anybody who's had a bag of Cheetos is gonna they're not gonna want to go back to raw fish.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: No, they're gonna want a little bit more of that sweet Cheeto.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: And the the County Sheriff's Office is asking the public to please refrain from feeding bears and leaving food out for them.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Now, uh, they were able to hunt down the mama bear and kill it, and then they were able to tranquilize the the two smaller bears that were eventually euthanized.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: It's funny that we're like protect the bear at all cost until there's an attack, and then there's no trial, they all die.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: That's then that is the sticking point here, Drew.
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: If you don't get out in front of this, you're going to be killing bears, which the people that are whining about you harassing the bears are going to hate more than you just scaring them back into the woods.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: There, I mean, and that's what's frightening to me is there are people who are gonna listen to this and they're gonna be way more sad that the bears died than the other people almost died.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Or even if they mauled that man to death and they're like, You killed the bear, you don't even hear yourself talking.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: Like that's ridiculous.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And, you know, there are things that you can do in order to help these things.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Like the list of things that they say, and and if you live in a rural area, keep this in mind.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Lock up your garbage.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: You know, just having a lid on it's not gonna do it.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: It's a bear, it can rip your head off your neck, it can open your garbage can lid, lock it up, uh, clean your outdoor grills because it's gonna open it up and it's gonna slurp it up.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: You don't even think about that.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: You really don't.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And and you think, okay, I got my garbage can under control.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: That's where all the food waste goes.
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: But your recycling bin, a lot of those plastic clamshells and stuff that you want to be a good human and you want to recycle them, well, they had food in them.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: And guess what that means?
- 13:55SPEAKER_00: They smell like food.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: Recycling bins are not off the table here.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: You have to lock up and secure those things.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Pet food is another thing that people don't think of.
- 14:03SPEAKER_00: You got some kibble outside for your dog.
- 14:06SPEAKER_00: Um, you know, uh bird feeders.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: You think a b a bear doesn't like a seed, man?
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: If you've ever seen bear crap in the woods, it's literally like they've been only living off blackberries.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Even if they've been eating fish, seeds, they love them.
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: So you there's really no end to the way that you have to prep here.
- 14:24SPEAKER_00: And I feel so bad that this is one that we should remind people, Drew.
- 14:30SPEAKER_00: Don't feed the bears.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Like that is that goes back to the cartoons that we saw come from the 1950s in black and white.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: Like, this is steamboat willy age knowledge.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Don't feed the bears.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And if you do, you should we should have a nice rhyme.
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Like, once they try MSG, the bears won't let you be.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: Something like that that will keep people to you're just remembering that, hey, you don't want these things in your environment, okay?
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: And I I like your little um rhyme there.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: It'll help people.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: Maybe you can build one for this too.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: And this is one that I don't really I wouldn't have thought of initially, but once they bring it up, of course.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: If you have fruit trees, you need to manage those.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: You can't leave the fruit all over the ground.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: That's kindling for them to come into your life and and cook your soul.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Don't be doing that.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Uh secure your crawl spaces, they're trying to get places that are comfortable.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: And, you know, if they're in the elements, they're gonna want to go into those things.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: And it really comes down to like you mentioned that not so much in Oregon, but if you camp, like when we go backpacking where you don't have the car, and you're out in the middle of the wilderness, we always set up a thing for our food where we hang it for our from a tree.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: We throw a rope over the top of a branch, we pull it up past where a bear can get it, and it hovers there all night.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: And when it's breakfast time, we let it down and we eat.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: People who are dumb enough to be like, well, just okay, make sure you put all the food in your tent.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Do you want to die tonight?
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: What are you doing?
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: That's the equivalent of protecting your food by putting it in a plastic bag and setting it outside.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: They can smell it, it's what it's all about.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: The smell is what attracts them.
- 16:13SPEAKER_00: You know, I remember going out to deer hunt, uh, or actually it was an elk hunt as a young kid, Drew, and I was out with one of my buddies, and we had just told our moms, hey, we're going out after school, so we're gonna camp out there tonight.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Can you hook us up with some food to put in the cooler?
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And my buddy's mom went down to Safeway and got fried chicken Friday on a safe way.
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Those bears smelled us from the next county over.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Like, I do remember we finished the fried chicken, and my buddy took off with the bones and ran like 400 yards into the wilderness and dropped the bones there and came back to camp, and I could still smell the fried chicken.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Like, this is how crazy.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: I don't have that good of a nose.
- 16:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, we went to investigate the next day, Drew.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: Pandemonium, where those chicken bones found their end.
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was the the ground all around was beaten down.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know what animal got to it, but I don't want that animal knocking on the tent door after dark.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: So I tip of the cap to that guy who just decided he was gonna go mix martial arts against a bear in his yard, and he did it for the girls, and that's super awesome.
- 17:19SPEAKER_01: And I would like to think that I would be fighting like that too, but there's a part of me that thinks I would be squeezing cheeks, running for my weapon, and firing like dirty hairy out that back door because I don't care what the rules are.
- 17:31SPEAKER_01: As soon as you breach the door, you're the same thing as a robber or a murderer at my door.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: I'm going to absolutely destroy you and wear you as a blanket.
- 17:41SPEAKER_00: And really hope he makes a full recovery, Drew.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: And I also hope that the local fish and game wardens learn something from this.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: This is a serious deal, and you saw how serious it can get in a heartbeat.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: That was like, hey, there's a bear at my window, too.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: There's a bear on the back on the back porch.
- 17:57SPEAKER_00: Like it's really quick.
- 17:59SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you, those hollow corridors that you have, they're nothing for a bear.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: If they want in, they're coming in.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: So they're going right through it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: They could just pop a window, even and just what?
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Um, and I will just a little honorable mention before we take a break, Marcus.
- 18:12SPEAKER_01: Um, in Washington state, because that was in Idaho, a bear and its nine cubs has been rescued because you know, bears first.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Um, well, even if you rescue them, uh, reports are that these bears are eating 200 pounds of food a day in captivity.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: 200 pounds.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: And if you're asking how you would go about uh having that food supplied, they have no idea how they're going to do that.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Because they're asking you, Marcus, they would like you to please donate vegetables, fish, and gift cards in an attempt to feed these bears moving forward.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: Did we get the bears an Amazon account?
- 18:51SPEAKER_00: Why do they need a di why do they need a gift card?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: And you know, I know Washington is a state pretty well.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: I haven't explored the outdoors as much as I have here in Oregon, but one thing I know about it, that central and eastern part of the state's real covered in bear country.
- 19:03SPEAKER_00: Why don't you just go let them go?
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: The longer you keep this this bear and her nine cubs in captivity, the worse go they're gonna have at it when you finally release them back to their natural habitat.
- 19:15SPEAKER_00: You don't have to put them out at the outskirts of town.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Drive them over Hill and Dale and way out past grandma's house and let them go night next uh next to a nice stream where they can find their own damn fish.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I wish he'd told me that before because I just sent over a$50 gift card to Ruby Tuesdays.
- 19:35SPEAKER_00: It's gonna help.
- 19:36SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, mama's gonna have surf and turf.
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: I think the kids will probably get the scraps, but come on.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the mom eats 50 pounds of food by itself per day.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: Was there any information on what they rescued these bears from?
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Because a pack of 10 bears seems like there's not a lot of things they need rescuing from.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: Unless you've got a pack of 12 hunters, um, I think the bears are gonna be fine.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: Like just what what was what was the rescue situation here, or was it just getting them out of town?
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: Well, basically, based on how much they eat, I think we rescued them from diabetes.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Once they try MSG, the bears won't let you be, Drew.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I'm telling you, it's gonna catch on.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: That's there's gonna be a billboard across Idaho and Washington State.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: I can I can feel it right now.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're gonna take a break.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: We're gonna come back.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: It is a big weekend for both the ducks and the beavers, as uh two interesting storylines ahead of those games, and the Blazers are officially in the season as the preseason has begun, and some headlines there as well.

- 22:21SPEAKER_01: And while I tried to dig in that yard, it was not gonna happen.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: And I brought in the big dogs, and not only did they give me the best price around, they also took care of business and made me confident that I'd have water back in time to make sure my kids could have a bath and a glass of water when they needed.

- 22:50SPEAKER_01: It's another massive weekend in college football as the Ducks, Beevs, and Huskies, well, of course, the Washington State Cougars also in play, but they're doing a good job of annihilating their chances of doing anything this year.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: Um, but we'll get into all of it.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Let's start off with the Ducks.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: There is conversations that Dante Moore is now throwing the rock around.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Now it we aren't gonna be seeing him this weekend against number 21 UCLA, where the Ducks are favored by 11 and a half.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: What do you think of this Dante Moore progress?
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: I think it's good.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: You always want to see the guys making steps in the right direction.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: If we were sitting here this week and he still wasn't at practice, I would start to worry about the rest of the season and and how long he's gonna be out, Drew.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Um kind of a shame that we're not gonna get to see him against his old squad, but again, that whole coaching staff has changed.
- 23:40SPEAKER_00: That whole roster is turned over since Dante left, and it doesn't really have the uh same power that that would have um if if he had just left last season.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Um but I I love to see the progress here, and I I will be honest with you, as good as UCL uh UCLA has looked this season, I was surprised to see the point spread sitting at 11.5 right now.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: I've seen it as high as 12.5 or 13.5 when it first opened, Drew.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: So um I'm kind of interested to hear your thoughts on that.
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Uh this UCLA team is a much different animal than what they were last year.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be as tough as it always is.
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: I mean, we've only had one good game against uh decent, you know, a decent opponent, no offense to Portland State, but that's a scrimmage at best.
- 24:29SPEAKER_01: So, you know, I'm always a little weary to see how it goes.
- 24:32SPEAKER_01: I think the fact that we no longer are telegraphing our plays in the way that everybody knows what we're doing has proved uh to work in our favor.
- 24:41SPEAKER_01: I do want to say a tip of the cap, though, to the coach at over at UCLA.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Now, when Dante Moore went down with injury, UCLA was on their way home from a road game and spent most of that time in the air after that game, and we're getting scattered reports about Dante Moore.
- 25:02SPEAKER_01: And UCLA's coach, Bob Chesney, saw the hit afterwards, and he said that he's had a history of having to leave players behind when the team comes home because they've had a medical event, and it just doesn't sit right with him.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: So I thought it was pretty badass.
- 25:19SPEAKER_01: Well, it's not great to talk about your opponent as, oh, I just love these guys, but the guy got a hold of Dan Lanning and asked if he would like him to go to the hospital and sit with Dante Moore to make sure everything was okay and just kind of do the next man up mentality.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: And I thought that even though he's the rival this week and we want to take him down, that was commendable.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: Um, I think about it from the standpoint, Drew, of would I want my coach to do something like that if something like that happened here in Eugene?
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: And the answer is hands down yes, every day and twice on Sunday.
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: Um, look, you can have respect for human beings and still hate them on the day that the ball gets kicked off because of what color shirt they're wearing.
- 26:03SPEAKER_00: And I think this is a really good example of that.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: At the end of the day, we're all humans, and uh, one of our humans was laying on the ground twitching for about 10 or 15 minutes after that hit.
- 26:14SPEAKER_00: And uh I bet that really set nicely with Dan Lanning, just to know that hey, uh it's not all about the games on the field here.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: There's a human aspect to this, and we've got another coach that believes that and is willing to step up here when I got to fly back to Eugene.
- 26:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I didn't see Lincoln Riley's comment on that.
- 26:33SPEAKER_01: I didn't remember him saying he was gonna go over there.
- 26:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I actually think Lincoln Riley was waiting for Dante Moore to walk out of the hospital so he could kick one foot behind the other and trip him up again, but that may have just been conjecture and rumor, Drew.
- 26:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not sure.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Seriously.
- 26:47SPEAKER_01: Uh now Dylan Rayola will be the quarterback starting this week.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Um, now there is a clause in his NIAL deal.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: So, in order for him to get paid with his name, image, and likeness, he has a weight clause in his deal.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: And so the clause says that when he is the starting quarterback, he has to weigh in twice a week to main sure that he stays at a legitimate playing weight or he doesn't get paid.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: Interesting.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: Almost makes you wonder like, what what did you find?
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Did you find some wings?
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Did you find a good spot?
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: You know, is it there's some good Hawaiian plate lunch around here?
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: Where's he going that this is causing a problem?
- 27:31SPEAKER_00: And let me know because I want to go try it.
- 27:33SPEAKER_01: He's got to be getting that wet burrito down at burrito, boys.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, I love it more than certain lost relatives, Drew.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: I'll be honest with you.
- 27:40SPEAKER_00: And it's really hard to stay away from.
- 27:42SPEAKER_00: They make it quick.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, they put the chips in the sauce, you know, so you get some soggy chips to go.
- 27:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, God, you're getting it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's so good.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: Uh, it's so good.
- 27:50SPEAKER_01: And it's open way too late to make good decisions.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: But I'm betting that Dylan Riola has a history of being a late-night lunchbox.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: And they're like, well, we don't need you getting all lunchy here.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: So if you want your money, you're gonna hit the scales.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: But he didn't have to do that as the backup.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: It's when you are the starting quarterback, you have to hit the scale.
- 28:10SPEAKER_01: And you can kind of see it in him how he could become the round mound, but he seems like he's within the parameters now and probably taking this pretty seriously at this point.
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: But I don't know, you could see him down at Hot Mama's wings or something.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you really could.
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: And I kind of wonder if there was a there was a moment at the UCL or at the USC game where he looked at Dante Moore and went, man, he's really hurt.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Shit, that means I'm not gonna be able to have a sub tonight.
- 28:37SPEAKER_00: Was there did he connect those dots right away, knowing that hey, he's probably not gonna be back for the next game?
- 28:42SPEAKER_00: We better do nothing but salads and tofu here for the foreseeable future.
- 28:46SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: And I bet he was bummed about it.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: So the Ducks do have an early one for us, a 1230 kick, not my favorite.
- 28:54SPEAKER_01: I like to have it be the highlight of my Saturday and not the footnote.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: I've got 1230 and then my daughter has soccer at 3:30.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: So I have to like kind of have it together for all that.
- 29:08SPEAKER_01: You can't have you can't have like a handful of nervous drinks while you're watching that game, trying to get through it, and then you know, you guys take an Uber to soccer.
- 29:19SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, you can.
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: You just will not be allowed back at the soccer facility.
- 29:23SPEAKER_00: That's the only you gotta, you know, it's consequences, right?
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: You gotta figure out what means more, and it's probably your daughter's soccer game and having dad in the stands.
- 29:31SPEAKER_00: So yeah, and and dead sober.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: I'm already one of the loudest parents, so I think it's best that I take that down a notch.
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Now, Oregon State, they've got a big test against San Diego State this weekend, and it's kind of funny that the team is being offered a vaccine for measles, mumps, and rebella uh ahead of the game because there's been an outbreak of the mumps for San Diego State.
- 29:56SPEAKER_00: Did you hear that?
- 29:57SPEAKER_00: Well, I know it's a party school, but I didn't know mumps was one of the uh risk factors there.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: I thought this was more of a an STD thing, but this sounds serious, Drew.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: And why don't these kids already have their MMR?
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: I got mine back in like third grade.
- 30:09SPEAKER_00: I remember it burnt like hell, made my whole arm hurt.
- 30:12SPEAKER_00: But that was one of the, I believe it was that in hepatitis C, I think, was the the vaccination rounds that we had at very young ages when I was in school.
- 30:21SPEAKER_00: They don't do that anymore.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, heavily required when I was a kid, and I've had no mumps because of it.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: But in San Diego State, it's mumps and crotch lumps.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: They got it all over there.
- 30:37SPEAKER_01: So hopefully Oregon State can get it done.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Do you know what the spread is on that game?
- 30:41SPEAKER_00: Even bigger than the spread in the Oregon game, Drew.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: Uh the Beavers favored by 14 and a half, couple touchdowns in the hook there.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Uh 3 p.m.
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: kickoff time at Reese Stadium, uh, overunder anywhere between 53.5 to 56.5, depending on the sports book.
- 30:57SPEAKER_00: And that means they think there's going to be some points up on the board here in Reese Stadium.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: So um I I would love to see Oregon State cover this and and maybe get uh a third touchdown out in front of the Aztecs.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: They're not looking that good this year, and uh with Mumps in the locker room, who could expect anything more?
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: No, and I really want the Beavers to do well now, uh, because you know I posted a clip of us talking about the small the possibility, well, a small possibility that the Beavers and Ducks could face off in the college football playoff.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: The video went borderline viral, and when they do, whenever a video goes viral, the the the a-holes come out in the in the comments and call you a moron, learn football, all the things start to happen.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: And so you know you've got a good clip when that happens, but I would love to see them actually test this theory and win a few more games.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: And Vegas is liking them now, and that quarterback and that freshman wide receiver don't put anything past him.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: And so it's a lot of the people who don't have a profile picture, uh, because a couple of them pissed me off good enough to be like, dude, what does your face look like?
- 32:07SPEAKER_01: And they're lucky, you're lucky that you put up some anime picture instead of your face because I was borderline coming for you, even though my wife says it's time to calm down and don't respond to trolls.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: But it is hard when they're testing your intelligence.
- 32:21SPEAKER_01: When we know it's a long shot, they have to finish at the top of those other power conferences in order to get in.
- 32:28SPEAKER_01: But when you haven't played yet in conference, when you lost to two ranked teams earlier and in close games, a lot of people are just looking at it.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: That's old Beavers.
- 32:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, it's just the Beavers.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, give them some time and let's see what happens.
- 32:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and to the guy who uh explicitly said that the Beavers can't make the college football playoff with two losses.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: Well, you're wrong because they can win the Pac-12 and they can earn an auto bid.
- 32:53SPEAKER_00: And it doesn't matter what happened.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Of course, they've got to be the highest ranked team, but that's for the voters to shake out later.
- 32:59SPEAKER_00: It is definitely still possible here.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: And um, yeah, you know, one other thing, Drew, about this game that I really want to know is like, I know that if you end up with turf toe, you might be down for two to four weeks.
- 33:10SPEAKER_00: I know that a high ankle sprain's four to six.
- 33:13SPEAKER_00: What is mumps?
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: When they list you on the injury report with mumps, how long are you out?
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: And can you talk to anybody?
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Can you be, you know, can you travel with the team with mumps?
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: I I would guess.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm thinking the fact that they're handing out vaccines, the time you sit out is zero time.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: And that you just show up with mumps and crawl into a pile of dudes and tights and do it.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Is this all just part of the offensive playbook for San Diego State University?
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: This is how the Aztecs play football.
- 33:39SPEAKER_00: If we can't beat them throwing the ball and running it, we're gonna give them disease and take them down from the inside out.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because when the team's about to rush the quarterback and his cadence is we have mumps, mumps, mumps, mumps, mumps, hike, you're not gonna rush with full power.
- 33:55SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't.
- 33:56SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't either, man.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: In fact, I'm running the other way.
- 33:59SPEAKER_00: That's the only way I'm going, is away from the guy yelling, I have mumps.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 34:03SPEAKER_01: Uh so interested to see what happens with Oregon.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: Uh good test there.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Glad it's at Odson that there's gonna be some noise there.
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: Uh also, Oregon State.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: I think they'll take care of San Diego State.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: And the dogs up at Washington, who lost one right there at the end to USC, which I always like to see USC get a smack down even against our purple rivals up there.
- 34:26SPEAKER_01: But they've got Iowa this week, Marcus.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: And in what's a bit of a shocker, Washington is a favorite over Iowa, who just had college game day and played Ohio State pretty tight for a while last weekend, is favored by two and a half.
- 34:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really strange to see a non-ranked team rank era face a top 20 team, which that's where Iowa's coming in in the AP poll this week at 20, and and be a favorite.
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: Now, I will say this it's a two and a half point favorite at home.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: And what do they normally say in Vegas, Drew, that your home field should earn you about three points here.
- 35:02SPEAKER_00: So this is kind of a pick'em game for you from that standpoint.
- 35:07SPEAKER_00: Um, but the dogs have not looked great.
- 35:10SPEAKER_00: I I don't know what Damon Williams was doing with that last play.
- 35:13SPEAKER_00: It almost felt to me, Drew, the way he kind of threw that ball away, like he felt like he had another down to play with in that USC game as it wrapped up.
- 35:23SPEAKER_00: Um, I got a text message from our friend Josh, who played football for the Oregon State Beavers.
- 35:29SPEAKER_00: He's a big Beaver fan.
- 35:31SPEAKER_00: Um, he's he's slowly adopted the Ducks a little bit because he lives in Eugene and he sometimes works in an adjacent uh capacity with the Ducks, but he sent me a text message of all people last week and said, I have never, ever in my life rooted for the Huskies harder than I'm rooting for the Huskies right now.
- 35:50SPEAKER_00: And that was as a result of that hit and the aftermath on Dante Moore.
- 35:54SPEAKER_00: Um, we had we had uh people from all different sides of the country that were wishing the Huskies would have beat the Trojans last week.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: And I don't know, Drew.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: I there's a lot of analysts out there that said this Husky team was going to challenge for a Big Ten title or at least be in the conversation.
- 36:10SPEAKER_00: And right now, I'd say they wouldn't even challenge for a Pac-12 title the way they look on the field.
- 36:16SPEAKER_01: And what's funny is, you know, I wanted USC to lose so bad for the same reasons.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Washington, the last time I went there, they barked at me.
- 36:26SPEAKER_01: Times before that, I've been chased out of the bathroom.
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: I had a guy stalk me to one of the boats on Lake Washington one time to just attack me for having green on.
- 36:37SPEAKER_01: You know, it's a hostile environment.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: I was gonna find that out the hard way.
- 36:41SPEAKER_01: I don't love that they treat people like that, but there's a weird respect's a fine, a funny word, but there's a weird thing where I'm like, God, they bring it.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: They do.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: You go in, you go into the bathroom, you pee on a duck almost every time.
- 36:54SPEAKER_01: There's somebody who goes and drops one, and they probably do it ten times a game in case some duck duck fan has the gull to reach in there and throw one out of there.
- 37:02SPEAKER_01: They're like, and repill, here's another one.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: They're hardcore, but no matter what they've said to me, what they've done to me, the way that USC acted, and and just being completely pathetic, I want Lincoln Riley to lose every game and get fired tomorrow.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Take your 70 million and get on.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: You know, I was walking out of the very last game ever played at Husky Stadium before they remodeled it, Drew, and uh, I'm talking to my wife on the phone after, I believe, a 31 to 24 victory for the Ducks.
- 37:32SPEAKER_00: And uh, for my trouble, I got punched in the back of the head.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: And I still to this day don't know who it was that laid me flat out on my face on the wet concrete that night.
- 37:43SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I guarantee you they were wearing purple and they weren't happy because I was wearing green.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Same thing.
- 37:48SPEAKER_00: And uh, I hope Iowa's ready for it, Drew.
- 37:50SPEAKER_00: Another another point here.
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: This is only a 41 and a half overunder for the total points scored.
- 37:56SPEAKER_00: That means here that what the odds makers are saying is that this game is going to be played in Iowa's style, low scoring, uh, run the ball, three yards in a cloud of dust, but they have Washington as the favorite.
- 38:10SPEAKER_00: So they think Washington can beat Iowa at its own game at home.
- 38:14SPEAKER_00: I'll be interested to see how that one shakes out.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: I think that that's not going to work.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: They have to find a way to score points and force Iowa to be out of their comfort zone.
- 38:23SPEAKER_01: Iowa football is some of the boringest football you will ever watch.
- 38:27SPEAKER_01: It's up there with the late 90s Cornhusker football, where it was all an option read the entire time, but not like the Ducks option, where Mariota and company were going gangbusters, scoring 50 points a game.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Just a couple yards, couple yards.
- 38:44SPEAKER_01: Iowa normally plays at like 9 a.m.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: on Saturday morning, and I always feel like that's to get them out of the way because no one wants to see that crap.
- 38:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's true, man.
- 38:54SPEAKER_00: Uh those old Iowa teams, those old Nebraska teams from the late 90s and early 2000s, you're referencing, they didn't even have tight ends on the team.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: They just had tackles that could catch a little bit.
- 39:04SPEAKER_00: And they used to put as many of them on the field as they could.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: You know, another one that used to do that was Stanford back in the day.
