Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, Aukland's getting a police training facility. Currently one
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the cops have to spend twenty weeks of police
- 0:05Speaker 1: courage in Poti Rua, but the government yesterday announced a
- 0:08Speaker 1: new facility to make it more accessible. It's also supposed
- 0:11Speaker 1: to help with the target of increasing frontline police numbers
- 0:14Speaker 1: by five hundred. And Associate Minister for Police is Casey Casella,
- 0:17Speaker 1: who joins you now, Hala Casey.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Good morning, how are you.
- 0:21Speaker 1: I'm good. You have to wonder why it's taken so
- 0:22Speaker 1: long to have a second training facility in New Zealand's
- 0:25Speaker 1: biggest city.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Yes, and that's it's been a process that being worked
- 0:30Speaker 2: on for a while. But it was the funding that
- 0:33Speaker 2: we've managed to get through. The five hundred police increase
- 0:36Speaker 2: came through last year. Was identified opportunities, was the plan
- 0:41Speaker 2: any opportunities to increase those police numbers with the target
- 0:45Speaker 2: and that's what they've done.
- 0:46Speaker 1: How many can you train at this new facility? And
- 0:48Speaker 1: is it residential like the potal one.
- 0:51Speaker 2: There is a small part of residential, so there will
- 0:54Speaker 2: be some that will be able to live in residence.
- 0:57Speaker 2: The big attraction is that there is a barrier for
- 1:01Speaker 2: the target demographic that we're trying to get, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: those those sort of younger early family members that sort
- 1:07Speaker 2: of have got young families that are trying to get
- 1:09Speaker 2: them down to colleges. A big asque for twenty weeks,
- 1:13Speaker 2: so there will be a mix of that.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Okay, Now, how are you going with the extra five
- 1:17Speaker 1: hundred numbers? How many cops have we got right now?
- 1:21Speaker 2: So we've got ten thousand, one hundred and ninety three
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think as at the end of last year, So.
- 1:27Speaker 1: We turn ten thousand, one hundred and ninety three.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Well done, that's yes, So that's that's a little bit
- 1:35Speaker 2: less than when we came in, which was ten thousand,
- 1:37Speaker 2: two hundred eleven. But we've got three hundred eleven in
- 1:39Speaker 2: college at the moment.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Okay, Well, back back in August, we had ten thousand,
- 1:42Speaker 1: one hundred and seven. Now you've got ten thousand, one
- 1:45Speaker 1: hundred and ninety three. Back back in you know, back
- 1:50Speaker 1: in August of last year, basically you've gotten down one
- 1:53Speaker 1: hundred and four police, and the Labor Party was saying
- 1:55Speaker 1: that means you need six hundred hit to five hundred.
- 1:58Speaker 1: So where are you at with the five hundred extra police?
- 2:01Speaker 1: Based on the base number.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Yes, that's what I'm saying. We've got three hundred eleven
- 2:06Speaker 2: at college at the moment, so they'll be graduating. So
- 2:09Speaker 2: that's down there at noon. We've got another wing going
- 2:11Speaker 2: in another week's time, so the wing numbers are increasing
- 2:16Speaker 2: the June. We're aiming for the Auckland wing to be
- 2:20Speaker 2: around June, so we've got we've got more wings going through,
- 2:25Speaker 2: so we're still looking really good. And we've also got
- 2:27Speaker 2: a large number of the commissioners talking about yesterday, a
- 2:30Speaker 2: large number of cops that are wanting to rejoin, which
- 2:33Speaker 2: the last figures I saw was about one hundred and
- 2:35Speaker 2: twenty police officers wanting to rejoin. So there's a lot
- 2:38Speaker 2: of factors that we're doing in order to achieve us
- 2:41Speaker 2: and the home drivers that we've got really good recruitment pipeline.
- 2:44Speaker 1: Okay, good, and you believe you'll get to that five
- 2:47Speaker 1: hundred target. If so, can you give us a date.
- 2:53Speaker 2: Well, the date is November twenty ead of November of
- 2:57Speaker 2: this year as the date we have to achieved the
- 3:00Speaker 2: ten thousand, seven hundred eleven, which was our five hundred targets.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Okay, we'll just start, We'll just write all these numbers
- 3:05Speaker 1: down so we're perfectly clear in the FOO in the future.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Ten thousand, seven hundred and eleven, currently on ten thousand,
- 3:12Speaker 1: currently on ten thousand, one hundred and ninety three. Good luck, Casey.
- 3:16Speaker 1: We want we wont I think people want cops? Don't you?
