- 0:06Speaker 1: Welcome to the No Dribble Summer Series. We're not actually
- 0:09Speaker 1: here because we're having a well earned not that well earned.
- 0:12Speaker 2: But a break. Anyway. Where are you cat Well, I've
- 0:15Speaker 2: got butt sweat at the moment. It's hot. I think
- 0:17Speaker 2: I need a cocktail it is. Where's my poor boy?
- 0:21Speaker 1: Lizzie, You're off somewhere.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Where are you? I'm sorry, justin Tazzy drinking so much
- 0:27Speaker 2: local whiskey that we'll probably see a Tasmanian tiger and
- 0:30Speaker 2: forget what I'm about to say. This is the No
- 0:33Speaker 2: Dribble Summer Series. Enjoy, guys, Houston. We don't have a problem, Houston.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We did check out for summer, but then so much
- 0:44Speaker 1: is happening that No Dribble has decided that we needed
- 0:47Speaker 1: to come back to Wedge in another quick episode, I'm
- 0:50Speaker 1: Carolyn Swindell.
- 0:51Speaker 2: I'm in Brisbane. I'm Lizzellas, I'm at home.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Lizzellis is still at home. Katherine is on holidays. But
- 0:59Speaker 1: we're very excited to have our super sub join us today.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Welcome back, Sue Gordion.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Gordy's back in the house. It's been a long time.
- 1:08Speaker 1: It has been a long time, but we're so we're
- 1:09Speaker 1: missing you. We're probably menstruating at the same time because
- 1:12Speaker 1: we've got the same top on suit.
- 1:16Speaker 2: I'm majorly concerned that this was uncoordinated. And even Liz,
- 1:22Speaker 2: you've gone close. I've gone close and I haven't been
- 1:25Speaker 2: strated for quite some time. So yes, I was thinking that,
- 1:30Speaker 2: Oh happy day. So I think there's something also play
- 1:33Speaker 2: like maybe it's summer. But I don't know. A couple
- 1:35Speaker 2: of you two didn't send me the memo to say
- 1:37Speaker 2: we're your best blue sinki with you with the white trimmings.
- 1:42Speaker 2: So Gordy, where are you. I'm in Perth. I'm in
- 1:45Speaker 2: mandra at our holiday place at the moment. But yeah,
- 1:47Speaker 2: I'm back in Perth and I've been around the world
- 1:49Speaker 2: in eighty days. It's been a ball back at Fever training,
- 1:53Speaker 2: so general manager all over. I feel great. And if
- 1:56Speaker 2: you want to ask me the question that a million
- 1:58Speaker 2: people have asked me, which is do you miss it,
- 2:01Speaker 2: it's a simple answer. No, I haven't given it a
- 2:04Speaker 2: second thought, but yeah, good. I've been over in South Africa.
- 2:07Speaker 2: I did a little coaching job over there for ten
- 2:09Speaker 2: days and loved eight days, sorry and loved it. That
- 2:12Speaker 2: was really cool and they're back. Just back now to
- 2:15Speaker 2: my normal programming, which will be bits and pieces but
- 2:19Speaker 2: in the fever environment coaching and then back to commentary
- 2:21Speaker 2: next year.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Well, there's a lot to talk about with that. That's
- 2:24Speaker 1: one of the reasons that we wanted to come back in.
- 2:28Speaker 1: One of them is the very sad news coming out
- 2:30Speaker 1: of Bondi last week. And we know there are a
- 2:33Speaker 1: lot of Jewish netballers and netball clubs and we just
- 2:37Speaker 1: want to send our love and send our love to
- 2:39Speaker 1: everyone who was impacted. And you know, as Dribblers, we
- 2:43Speaker 1: hope that we are leaning into the positive stories that
- 2:46Speaker 1: came out of this enormous tragedy. But Gordy, you've worked
- 2:50Speaker 1: with some of the Jewish netball clubs.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Yeah, actually would they. I have a terrific connection right
- 2:56Speaker 2: back to my very first ever coaching job, which was
- 2:59Speaker 2: coaching the Victoria Jewish netball team at their national champs
- 3:02Speaker 2: and then I went on to coach the Australian Jewish
- 3:05Speaker 2: team at the MCCABI Games in Israel in ninety three.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Then in ninety seven was the very sad Bridge collapse.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I'm not sure if you remember. On the on the
- 3:15Speaker 2: way to the opening ceremony where four participants lost their life.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And then in two thousand and one they didn't send
- 3:22Speaker 2: a big Australian contingent. And then I got a phone
- 3:24Speaker 2: call and asked if I go back in two thousand
- 3:26Speaker 2: and five. So I went back and coached the team
- 3:28Speaker 2: in two thousand and five, So twice over to Israel.
- 3:31Speaker 2: What a community loved it. My heart just sank last
- 3:35Speaker 2: week when this happened. Terrible. Yeah, on every level, terrible.
- 3:41Speaker 2: So and it's been it's hard not to go down
- 3:44Speaker 2: the rabbit hole of social media and continue to watch it. Yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 2: it's really difficult, isn't it. And my heart also goes
- 3:50Speaker 2: out to the local netball association. So Radwick Netball Association
- 3:54Speaker 2: takes in Bondi and they've got over eight hundred Jewish
- 3:57Speaker 2: members there playing netball at Radwick, So they've been credit
- 4:00Speaker 2: hard hit. And I know that their executive and through
- 4:02Speaker 2: their president Jenny Morrissey, are doing everything they can to support.
- 4:06Speaker 2: But like Sue, my heart absolutely goes out to the
- 4:09Speaker 2: entire Jewish community and to anyone who has been affected.
- 4:13Speaker 2: And I actually felt, I don't know about you, guys,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I felt really sad and unsettled and really down in
- 4:19Speaker 2: the days afterwards, and I heard that there was a
- 4:22Speaker 2: need for blood, so I went to I jumped online
- 4:25Speaker 2: to go and donate blood through Lifeblood and I got
- 4:28Speaker 2: my appointment and I said to my husband, you need
- 4:30Speaker 2: to jump on and get on board. And the first
- 4:32Speaker 2: one that he could get was for mid January. So
- 4:34Speaker 2: I think everyone's a bit the same. Everyone's trying to
- 4:36Speaker 2: lean in and help it in a practical way, which
- 4:39Speaker 2: is great. So and you know, I just it was
- 4:41Speaker 2: really nice to just sit and use the time to
- 4:43Speaker 2: reflect whilst I was giving blood and just think about
- 4:46Speaker 2: those communities that were impacted and also you know, the
- 4:49Speaker 2: people who who ran to help and responded, and it's
- 4:53Speaker 2: one of those things that I think will reverberate. And
- 4:55Speaker 2: you know, I'm from Sydney and I love Sydney and
- 4:57Speaker 2: this will I think reverberate through the city for you.
- 5:01Speaker 2: And it's just so tragic. So yeah, I just wanted
- 5:04Speaker 2: to send a shout out to all the Netball family,
- 5:07Speaker 2: particularly who are part of the Jewish community who have
- 5:10Speaker 2: been affected, but really to anyone who was affected and
- 5:12Speaker 2: anyone who was there on anything like that, We are
- 5:15Speaker 2: thinking of you. So it's really sad.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And we are hoping that this little episode might just
- 5:20Speaker 1: bring and I have a little twinkle of joy. By
- 5:23Speaker 1: the time this goes to air, Hunika will be over.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I hope that Hanaka has been able to be a
- 5:28Speaker 1: time of healing and reflection. We're just about to hit Christmas,
- 5:32Speaker 1: which is a time of disaster, a nightmare in my house.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I'm campaigning to change the date. I feel like it
- 5:38Speaker 1: sneaks up on me every single year, twenty fifth of December.
- 5:41Speaker 1: This is way too close to Boxing Day for my liking,
- 5:43Speaker 1: way too close to the new year. I would like
- 5:46Speaker 1: to have Christmas on another entire day, and I'd like
- 5:49Speaker 1: to wedge another week in between now and Christmas because
- 5:53Speaker 1: I have way too much to do.
- 5:55Speaker 2: But you know, a bit concerning giving, you've had a
- 5:57Speaker 2: year's notice.
- 6:01Speaker 1: It's fairly well publicized what date Christmas they're going to
- 6:04Speaker 1: fall every single year.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I'm not quite sure how it sneaks up on you,
- 6:10Speaker 2: but anyhow, No, that's true. Do you know what my kids,
- 6:12Speaker 2: we've got Our fridge is like a whiteboard. You can
- 6:15Speaker 2: write on it with whiteboard marker, and so our kids
- 6:18Speaker 2: have had this big red and green cloud up on
- 6:21Speaker 2: the fridge and they've been counting down for about one
- 6:24Speaker 2: hundred days. So the stress for me every morning I
- 6:27Speaker 2: wake half and they rub the number off and it
- 6:29Speaker 2: gets closer, and I'm like, oh my god, it's getting closer. So,
- 6:33Speaker 2: you know, like you sometimes think for some people like you,
- 6:36Speaker 2: Carolyn sneaks up on you. It's been looming over me
- 6:39Speaker 2: for months because the kids have been doing a countdown,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and I keep thinking, I've got so much to do.
- 6:44Speaker 2: I'm not going to be ready anyway. Here we are,
- 6:46Speaker 2: We're just about there, and I'm still not ready. But
- 6:48Speaker 2: that's what the last one is for.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And you know what, if there's enough protein in the house,
- 6:53Speaker 1: then we'll all be fine.
- 6:54Speaker 2: Just is their meat. There we go.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I have been growing tomatoes for months now, and I
- 7:00Speaker 1: may have enough a Christmas miracle to make one salad
- 7:05Speaker 1: for Christmas Day out of mind.
- 7:08Speaker 2: But it will be a very special salad mate, Thank you. Yes,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I will send you a photo.
- 7:13Speaker 1: But actually once some very joyful news came out last week,
- 7:16Speaker 1: which was the day that we released our last episode,
- 7:19Speaker 1: and then it was of course all the news drops
- 7:21Speaker 1: just after we go off there and a lot of
- 7:23Speaker 1: joyful news out of the West suit. This is why
- 7:26Speaker 1: we're very excited to have you here, and what a
- 7:29Speaker 1: coup for West Coast Fever to be able to And
- 7:33Speaker 1: now it's the beautiful news that Janielle Fallon, Emma and
- 7:35Speaker 1: her husband are expecting a baby, and that Ramelda Ake
- 7:38Speaker 1: and George stepped in and said, yep, I'm your shooter,
- 7:42Speaker 1: like masterful communications.
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's a great it is a great story. It's a
- 7:47Speaker 2: it's a great story. I think that will go down
- 7:50Speaker 2: in time, and it's got so many different angles. So look,
- 7:54Speaker 2: I had very little to do with it. I was
- 7:55Speaker 2: part of recontracting Janiale and at the time, you know,
- 7:59Speaker 2: it was difficult conversations for her as much as it
- 8:02Speaker 2: was for us as a club. But you know, we
- 8:04Speaker 2: wanted to pursue the possibility that she would be playing
- 8:07Speaker 2: next year, as did she. There was certainly a lot
- 8:10Speaker 2: that she had to manage and go through herself, with
- 8:13Speaker 2: her family, etc. Around those circumstances, so that was fine.
- 8:16Speaker 2: We supported that, but we also had to be really
- 8:18Speaker 2: mindful of our list, knowing that there was always the
- 8:20Speaker 2: potential that, you know, she might feel pregnant, and in
- 8:23Speaker 2: all honesty, I don't think there'd be a single soul
- 8:25Speaker 2: around the world that follows Janille that wouldn't have wanted
- 8:28Speaker 2: this to happen. So, and can I say, just before
- 8:30Speaker 2: I explained the next bit, the beaming smile on Jjay's
- 8:35Speaker 2: face at the moment, it's just it is priceless. It's
- 8:38Speaker 2: actually and I think we've spoken about this. I think
- 8:41Speaker 2: I spoke about how hard it was going through that
- 8:43Speaker 2: for me personally as a general manager, a little alone,
- 8:46Speaker 2: what Janilla and her family were going through. So it's
- 8:48Speaker 2: nice to kind of see the back end of it.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So very very happy for her, and she wants to
- 8:54Speaker 2: come back and play. She's got it in earth still,
- 8:56Speaker 2: so that's exciting. But then I handed the baton over
- 8:59Speaker 2: to Sarah Francis Bayman as general manager, and her and Dan,
- 9:02Speaker 2: while I was gallivanting around Europe and doing all other
- 9:05Speaker 2: bits and pieces, were able to lock in the Ramelda deal.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And it's cool, Like I caught up with real last week,
- 9:11Speaker 2: she flew into Perth and she's nervous, like she is nervous. Guys,
- 9:16Speaker 2: Can you believe it how nervous she is? Do you
- 9:18Speaker 2: claim that? Modio? Well no, because even though I reckon
- 9:23Speaker 2: the older you get, the harder it is to do
- 9:25Speaker 2: something for the first time. And even though we know
- 9:29Speaker 2: she's great and she's delivered at every club she's been at,
- 9:32Speaker 2: she's in a new environment. You know, she's had people
- 9:34Speaker 2: questioning her and I think her response to that was
- 9:37Speaker 2: absolutely brilliant. Chef's kiss. But I love that she's nervous, right,
- 9:42Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's a pretty ominous sort of signal
- 9:45Speaker 2: to the rest of the competition, because you know you're
- 9:47Speaker 2: playing better and you do better when you're nervous. So
- 9:49Speaker 2: I feel sorry for all the goalkeepers out there. You know,
- 9:53Speaker 2: you just just wave goodbye to Janille and then next
- 9:55Speaker 2: minute Ramelda's back. It's like, oh my god. But I
- 9:58Speaker 2: love that she's nervous. Good. I think that's fantastic. You'd
- 10:02Speaker 2: be worried if she wasn't. Yeah, no, so so pretty cool.
- 10:05Speaker 2: So she she gets to slot in and Katie Ane
- 10:08Speaker 2: gets another Jamaican teammate in the absence obviously we delisted
- 10:11Speaker 2: Denise Beckford, and then on top of that, obviously j
- 10:13Speaker 2: will be around in the background, and Ramelda comes over
- 10:16Speaker 2: with little Gg. So Gg has to don the green
- 10:18Speaker 2: as opposed to the pink or the red or the
- 10:21Speaker 2: Marome which she has historically probably donned or whatever. So yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 2: it's cool. It's a great swap. So we're excited. Do
- 10:28Speaker 2: you think gg will be saying to Ramelder it right?
- 10:31Speaker 2: So mum, you've got lightning vixens and giants before I
- 10:34Speaker 2: get the full setting uniforms. Please probably. Probably. She's a
- 10:39Speaker 2: little ripper, gg, I'll tell you, she's got some energy.
- 10:41Speaker 2: That kid who signed her? Yet, I wonder if anyone's
- 10:45Speaker 2: who's going to sign her first? I know, I know
- 10:48Speaker 2: she's got potential. So anyhow, so really exciting for the league,
- 10:51Speaker 2: great for Ramelda fans that she gets to live another season.
- 10:55Speaker 2: So that was the big news in netball for Prere Smith,
- 11:00Speaker 2: which was very exciting. And I did love Gaudy the
- 11:03Speaker 2: fact that there were the two of them sort of
- 11:04Speaker 2: standing next to each other when you announced it. But
- 11:06Speaker 2: I have a question, how on earth did you manage
- 11:09Speaker 2: to keep the Janelle news secret? Like she's she's hard
- 11:12Speaker 2: to hide. Well, do you know what I reckon? There's
- 11:14Speaker 2: two forms of news, right, So like there was there
- 11:17Speaker 2: was a lot of netballers that knew about it, Like
- 11:19Speaker 2: I guess, you know, the rumor mill in the netball
- 11:22Speaker 2: player's land. I think people knew, but publicly I think
- 11:25Speaker 2: people didn't. But I can tell you Janille was well
- 11:28Speaker 2: and truly showing, and so of course walking around Perth,
- 11:31Speaker 2: she is a reasonable public figure, so she need to
- 11:34Speaker 2: walk into her local you know, wool worse and all
- 11:36Speaker 2: of a sudden someone would see her. So if you notice,
- 11:39Speaker 2: any photos that we took of her were above bally up,
- 11:43Speaker 2: you know, like sort of above the belly up. But yeah, look,
- 11:46Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing that Fever had going it
- 11:48Speaker 2: was off seasonal is everyone list had been named. Everyone
- 11:51Speaker 2: was kind of moving on, and I think people were
- 11:52Speaker 2: sort of I don't know. Yeah, it was just a
- 11:55Speaker 2: lucky one. And I really do love how the club
- 11:57Speaker 2: chose to manage the announce and having Remeldering place as well.
- 12:02Speaker 2: And I guess ease fans concerns that when a big
- 12:05Speaker 2: name goes out, the replacements there and ready to go.
- 12:08Speaker 2: So I thought it was a really seamless handling of
- 12:11Speaker 2: the news for everybody involved, which is great. Yeah, it
- 12:14Speaker 2: was good. I was impressed. I thought, oh my goodness,
- 12:16Speaker 2: how do you hide what six foot six woman? It's
- 12:20Speaker 2: not hard there, you go very hard.
- 12:39Speaker 1: So other news Netble New Zealand CEO has stepped down
- 12:42Speaker 1: after sixteen years in Netbil probably didn't surprise anyone, but
- 12:46Speaker 1: the timing of it having worked for a long time
- 12:49Speaker 1: in PR we call that taken out the trash dropping
- 12:52Speaker 1: news like that just before Christmas.
- 12:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. I mean, someone had to go,
- 12:58Speaker 2: didn't they. But I think more need ago. It seems Liz,
- 13:01Speaker 2: you sit on the board, You're probably going to protect
- 13:03Speaker 2: the board's view. But it's a fascinating situation, isn't it. Yeah,
- 13:07Speaker 2: it is. I mean I really can't comment. I just
- 13:10Speaker 2: think that it's been a really tough couple of months.
- 13:12Speaker 2: So yeah, yeah, yeah, you got easy if okay, So
- 13:16Speaker 2: if you can't comment, can you or are you allowed
- 13:19Speaker 2: to say yes or no? Probably not, especially you two
- 13:23Speaker 2: talk amongst yourselves for this one.
- 13:25Speaker 1: Well, look, there's probably not a lot to say other
- 13:27Speaker 1: than they need a new broom, don't they. They've got to,
- 13:30Speaker 1: they have to make change and go into the new
- 13:32Speaker 1: year with something that puts last year behind them.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Well, I agree, I just wonder whether Liz your view
- 13:39Speaker 2: is is that public? The public debate won this? Yeah,
- 13:44Speaker 2: I don't know. I mean, I don't know. And I
- 13:46Speaker 2: really don't want to speculate, because it's somebody's job, right
- 13:50Speaker 2: and everybody goes into these roles, whether you're in management
- 13:54Speaker 2: or on the board or the general manager of a club,
- 13:56Speaker 2: doing your best. So there was, you know, there was
- 14:00Speaker 2: some pretty robust public debate that sort of I saw
- 14:03Speaker 2: sort of skip across my socials. But I actually try
- 14:05Speaker 2: to try to avoid it as much as possible. I
- 14:08Speaker 2: think there are things to learn out of this for
- 14:12Speaker 2: really anyone who is involved in the sport or in
- 14:14Speaker 2: any sport actually, but yeah, it's been a tough time
- 14:19Speaker 2: over there. Look look at you go all like this.
- 14:22Speaker 2: This is a different Liz Allas, isn't it. This is
- 14:24Speaker 2: like the I feel like she's batting at the crease
- 14:26Speaker 2: and defending. Yeah, exactly right. So he's a flatbat. He's
- 14:30Speaker 2: another flat bat. He's another flat bat. I'll let you two.
- 14:34Speaker 1: It is very important to be clear that Jenny Wiley
- 14:37Speaker 1: informed the board that she was stepping down, So this
- 14:40Speaker 1: is that certainly the public statements are not that the
- 14:43Speaker 1: organization has asked her to move on or terminated her tenure,
- 14:46Speaker 1: that she has said that this is the end of
- 14:48Speaker 1: my time and someone else needs to make a contribution.
- 14:51Speaker 1: So it's very important that we make that distinction.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Hey Gordie, Yes, Elizabeth, now you're on the coaching staff
- 14:58Speaker 2: of West Coast Fever. So I assume your Christmas wishes
- 15:01Speaker 2: come true, which is you know, having Janille Fowler Nembard back,
- 15:06Speaker 2: any other Christmas wishes that you've got. Well, I can
- 15:09Speaker 2: tell you one thing around Christmas that I mean. I
- 15:12Speaker 2: shouldn't use a wish for this, but if I could
- 15:14Speaker 2: stop Mariah Carey's song, I would be thrilled. It drives
- 15:19Speaker 2: me batty that song. I don't know, it's just that.
- 15:23Speaker 2: So my wish is if I don't have to ever
- 15:25Speaker 2: hear that song again, I'd be happy. Everything else is
- 15:28Speaker 2: crystal for me at the moment. You love it? Yeah? Nice? Actually,
- 15:31Speaker 2: it's funny, isn't it. I love having Christmas carols on
- 15:34Speaker 2: at home. It makes my skin crawl when I walk
- 15:37Speaker 2: into the supermarket or the shopping center and they hear
- 15:39Speaker 2: Christmas carrols because they sound a bit titty and it
- 15:41Speaker 2: sounds like all the bad Christmas movies where something bad's
- 15:44Speaker 2: about to happen. You can hear that tinny sort of
- 15:47Speaker 2: carol music. And every time I walk into the shoppings
- 15:49Speaker 2: and I'm like, oh, I don't want to hear that.
- 15:50Speaker 2: But when I get home and I'm decorating the tree
- 15:53Speaker 2: or sitting with a glass of champagne. Love the carols,
- 15:55Speaker 2: including the Mariah Carey one, Oh over that I like
- 15:58Speaker 2: the carols. It's just Mariah. What's your favorite carol? Oh?
- 16:02Speaker 2: I love tim mentions wine in the Sun.
- 16:06Speaker 1: It's not a Christmas carol though, is It's a Christmas
- 16:09Speaker 1: song Na, but.
- 16:10Speaker 2: It's more a Christmas Carol than Christmas Carol. Do you
- 16:13Speaker 2: guys watch Carols by candlelight on Christmas Eve in Melbourne?
- 16:17Speaker 2: The Melbourne One? Oh oh well, I mean I feel
- 16:20Speaker 2: like I'm to say yes, yes, I do love it.
- 16:23Speaker 2: Guys on the background here, I want to explain to
- 16:25Speaker 2: you I'm an absolute expert of Carols by candlelight. It
- 16:29Speaker 2: is a tradition of our family. We used to go
- 16:32Speaker 2: as kids and sit and watch, but now it's turned
- 16:35Speaker 2: into it's a bit. I don't like to critique because
- 16:38Speaker 2: I hate you know, like we're on TV and do
- 16:41Speaker 2: things and bits and pieces and you don't want people
- 16:42Speaker 2: critiquing you. But I must admit there is one show
- 16:44Speaker 2: I critique every year and it is Carols by Candlelight
- 16:48Speaker 2: good and the song choices we do a gold, silver
- 16:52Speaker 2: and bronze. There's a good friend of mine, Michael Hutchinson
- 16:54Speaker 2: that sits in Melbourne and we jump on social media
- 16:57Speaker 2: and go back and forth on Carols by Candlelight. Who wins?
- 16:59Speaker 2: Marine Anthony Clear wins every year with his sequined microphone.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It's very impressive, very good, so big fan. So I
- 17:08Speaker 2: love that. That's one of my big traditions. Where should
- 17:10Speaker 2: get those? Oh yeah, sequent microphones? Just a microphone that works,
- 17:16Speaker 2: ad be great. Let's stop simple and build. Yeah exactly. So, yeah,
- 17:24Speaker 2: that's a good tradition. What about Christmas? Stay? Do you
- 17:26Speaker 2: have any traditions on Christmas Day? Eat way too much,
- 17:30Speaker 2: drink way too much, have an afternoon nap, get up,
- 17:33Speaker 2: eat again. I mean, like, isn't that everybody's Christmas Day?
- 17:36Speaker 2: There's nothing. We play some games. My dad used to
- 17:39Speaker 2: dissect a cherry. We used to turn into a surge
- 17:42Speaker 2: and get the knife out and dissect a cherry and
- 17:44Speaker 2: remove the pit. That was a great tradition, So God
- 17:47Speaker 2: rest his soul, Burt. It was always after a couple
- 17:51Speaker 2: of red wines.
- 17:53Speaker 1: You're stalling because you don't want to go into a
- 17:57Speaker 1: Coxy's hot box.
- 17:59Speaker 2: But it's well, we know Cox has got a hot box,
- 18:02Speaker 2: but well I'm fanning myself in preparation for Cox's hot.
- 18:07Speaker 1: So, Gordy, this is what we do in the summer series.
- 18:09Speaker 1: We ask our guests to go into Coxy's hot box.
- 18:12Speaker 1: Bre we're all actually going to do it together here.
- 18:14Speaker 1: This was Catherine's directive in her absence, that I am
- 18:17Speaker 1: to ask the questions and we're all going to answer them. Okay,
- 18:20Speaker 1: so strap in all right, we'll start with you in
- 18:25Speaker 1: each answer, and then we'll go to Liz, and then
- 18:27Speaker 1: we'll go to me.
- 18:28Speaker 2: Okay, coffee order, Oh I don't drink coffee? Simple? What
- 18:34Speaker 2: do you? What do you do? What? What? What's the
- 18:36Speaker 2: best response ever? I drink water corona, I don't drink coffee.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I don't drink anything hot.
- 18:45Speaker 1: Oh okay, I feel like did you just really I
- 18:50Speaker 1: don't know what to hot? Enough Liz, Let's move on.
- 18:54Speaker 1: Let's pretend it never happened. What do you drink a
- 18:57Speaker 1: cold caffeinated beverage? Well?
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yeah, like occasionally, but not like Yeah, I don't have
- 19:03Speaker 2: like a regular like a drink. I just I love water.
- 19:07Speaker 2: All right, Liz, what's your coffee order? Well, I'm just
- 19:10Speaker 2: wondering how Susan even starts to day. If I couldn't
- 19:12Speaker 2: have at drink, I wouldn't get out of bed. I
- 19:14Speaker 2: have two cups of tea before I get out of
- 19:15Speaker 2: bed that my husband brings me. And then I like
- 19:17Speaker 2: a flat white, all the milk, all the fat. I'm
- 19:20Speaker 2: a skin flat white or an iced long black. All right,
- 19:24Speaker 2: I feel like you're talking a different language. Sorry, just anyhow,
- 19:27Speaker 2: move on breakfast, go to ah. This has changed. I
- 19:32Speaker 2: used to be always like avocado, you know, like fetter
- 19:36Speaker 2: on toast or something or other. When I'm in Bali,
- 19:39Speaker 2: it's pancakes because they just like it's so good. But
- 19:44Speaker 2: you're gonna hate me on this one. I'm gonna say.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I'm a really I don't often eat breakfast. I'm a
- 19:48Speaker 2: non breakfast eat You really suck at Coxy's hot boxes.
- 19:52Speaker 2: But you know, well, Cox and I've had this discussion before.
- 19:55Speaker 2: She's asked these questions before over and over, and every
- 19:58Speaker 2: time she just looks at me like, oh God, who
- 20:00Speaker 2: are you so? But if I had to side for
- 20:02Speaker 2: avocado on toast, okay, nice Elizabeth. Well, my kids have
- 20:07Speaker 2: hens and so we have fresh eggs. So I am
- 20:10Speaker 2: anything with eggs, and I'm obsessed at the moment with
- 20:12Speaker 2: chili oil. So coach scrambled fried with chili oil. I
- 20:18Speaker 2: love a chili scrambled egg.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But for me, it's just a well toasted piece of sourdough,
- 20:22Speaker 1: like almost burnt and jamight, thank you very much.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Simple, all right. Favorite sport that is not netball? Oh
- 20:36Speaker 2: that is a good question. Oh don't you don't watch
- 20:38Speaker 2: sport that's not netball? Or do you know what. I'm
- 20:41Speaker 2: not a big sports watcher. I don't know why, but
- 20:44Speaker 2: if I do, I get sucked into the AFL. I
- 20:47Speaker 2: am an AFLF not AFL. W bark for Richmond, Okay,
- 20:52Speaker 2: I'm a Richmond fan. Yeah, alright, so we've had a
- 20:54Speaker 2: few good years.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Richmond's one of my five AFL teams because I'm not
- 20:58Speaker 1: an AFL fan.
- 20:59Speaker 2: But it's sort of you can have five.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yes, if I have people who are important to me
- 21:04Speaker 1: and it's important to them, it's like, great, I'm on board.
- 21:06Speaker 2: I'm with you. I just want you to be happy.
- 21:09Speaker 2: Lee's favorite sport that's not netple, Well, I play tennis,
- 21:13Speaker 2: not as often as i'd like, So that's my other favorites.
- 21:16Speaker 2: One I do like watching it, and then my favorite
- 21:18Speaker 2: sport is really whatever I'm watching my kids play. So
- 21:20Speaker 2: in summer I watch a lot of cricket, a little
- 21:23Speaker 2: bit of basketball, and in winter I watch a lot
- 21:25Speaker 2: of rugby, soccer, netball. So I just like watching my
- 21:29Speaker 2: kids play sport. It's one of the great joys. Although
- 21:31Speaker 2: like at the moment we just right. Anyone who's had
- 21:34Speaker 2: kids would know that when they hit in that age
- 21:36Speaker 2: between nine and fifteen, they're so full on and there's
- 21:38Speaker 2: so much driving them to training that there is no
- 21:41Speaker 2: time to watch any other sport that's not their sport.
- 21:43Speaker 2: So anyway, it's good fun.
- 21:45Speaker 1: I watch a lot of sport, and I think cricket
- 21:48Speaker 1: is my favorite. And I really like us to have
- 21:50Speaker 1: a Lisa Healy on this podcast in twenty twenty six. Please,
- 21:53Speaker 1: So that's a job for you. And didn't she help
- 21:56Speaker 1: out when Catherine fainted?
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know define help. She took the piece
- 22:03Speaker 2: of out of Catherine when Catherine. That was funny. That's
- 22:06Speaker 2: certainly in the spirit of the no dribble help. That
- 22:08Speaker 2: would be off. Yes, that's right. Caroln. Where did you
- 22:11Speaker 2: love of cricket come from?
- 22:13Speaker 1: It was just something Dad always had on the radio
- 22:16Speaker 1: when I was growing up, and so for me it's
- 22:18Speaker 1: a real sound of summer.
- 22:19Speaker 2: But I also.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Love I don't particularly like BBL all one day.
- 22:25Speaker 2: I really love Test cricket.
- 22:27Speaker 1: I think there's something, there's something just quite extraordinary about
- 22:31Speaker 1: the strategy of it. And I get really sad when
- 22:35Speaker 1: we don't get a five day Test.
- 22:37Speaker 2: I'd rather have a five.
- 22:38Speaker 1: Day drawn Test than a two day decisive victory. That
- 22:41Speaker 1: means I don't get to watch more cricket. But yeah,
- 22:44Speaker 1: it's just something just nostalgia I think growing up that
- 22:46Speaker 1: Dad always had had it on in the radio sound
- 22:49Speaker 1: a summer.
- 22:50Speaker 2: I've done one Boxing Day Test and it was the
- 22:53Speaker 2: day that Shane Warn bowled the record for the wickets nice,
- 22:58Speaker 2: oh wow. I've was sitting with them. I was sitting
- 23:00Speaker 2: with the best mate and we had this group of
- 23:03Speaker 2: six guys around us and they were having a few,
- 23:06Speaker 2: definitely having a few. One by one it would be
- 23:08Speaker 2: their turn to go and get a drink, but none
- 23:11Speaker 2: of them wanted to go because Warning might have bowled
- 23:13Speaker 2: and he had one wicket to get this anyhow, So
- 23:15Speaker 2: one by one they'd rush up to get their drink.
- 23:18Speaker 2: No wicket, no wicket anyhow. Of course, this poor guy
- 23:21Speaker 2: gets up, goes off to get his drinks, and all
- 23:24Speaker 2: of a sudden, Shane bowls this wicket and it erupts
- 23:26Speaker 2: around the stadium and he comes back and he just
- 23:29Speaker 2: got his beer and threw it on every six glasses
- 23:31Speaker 2: of beer. We were covered in beer. He was so
- 23:34Speaker 2: disappointed that he missed the wicket. H oh, poor, it
- 23:38Speaker 2: was a great day. That's my cricket story one and only.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Okay, I reckon, I know the answer to this for you.
- 23:44Speaker 1: So summer or winter, Oh, summer, summer.
- 23:46Speaker 2: There is no thing in this winter. Yeah, summer. Love summer,
- 23:51Speaker 2: Me too. Summer.
- 23:52Speaker 1: That's the one thing I'd change about this Christmas though.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I'm pretty done with the forty degree days. I mean,
- 23:57Speaker 1: we've had you or something, but that's enough.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Okay. Tomato sauce in the fridge or the cupboard? Oh no, fridge,
- 24:04Speaker 2: fridge fridge. Yeah it is same. It goes molding in
- 24:08Speaker 2: the cupboard, aren't you Yeah, fridge fridge fridge. Okay. Favorite
- 24:11Speaker 2: holiday destination, Um, look, Bari Barlie. That's simple and Liz,
- 24:18Speaker 2: anywhere that I'm in my caravan is a good place
- 24:21Speaker 2: to be, So I like just traveling around looking at
- 24:23Speaker 2: new places.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Already, best holiday I think I've ever had, having traveled
- 24:27Speaker 1: to all seven continents and done load of Lord how
- 24:30Speaker 1: Island most amazing place too?
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, it's on the list.
- 24:35Speaker 1: All right, here's the biggie, here's the biggie.
- 24:37Speaker 2: How do you have your steak? Oh? Oh goodness, this
- 24:41Speaker 2: is a great question. Okay, I'm going to say medium,
- 24:44Speaker 2: but I get really frustrated when medium comes medium, rare,
- 24:47Speaker 2: and I get nervous, so I often order medium. Well, no,
- 24:52Speaker 2: I don't trust the chef. Yeah, wow, that never happens
- 24:55Speaker 2: to me because if I go medium, it always comes
- 24:57Speaker 2: out medium. Well, so I always ask for rare, knowing
- 25:00Speaker 2: that I'll get medium, rare medium were.
- 25:02Speaker 1: That is exactly what I was going to say, that
- 25:04Speaker 1: I will order rare because I really wanted medium rare. Okay, So, Liz,
- 25:08Speaker 1: do you wish to pass judgment? Do you wish to
- 25:10Speaker 1: give Gordy any feedback on that steak order? Or are
- 25:14Speaker 1: we just going to sit in silent judgment?
- 25:16Speaker 2: Oh? No, Look, I just want to know where gord
- 25:20Speaker 2: is going. Where they undercook the steaks rather than overcook
- 25:22Speaker 2: the steaks. This is outstanding. I mean, let's be honest.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Gordy doesn't drink coffee, doesn't have breakfast, and orders a
- 25:29Speaker 2: medium to well done steak. I'm a different Newman. I
- 25:35Speaker 2: wonder how our friends lucky. You're funny. They had to
- 25:39Speaker 2: move me to the West var away ly this is true,
- 25:42Speaker 2: but you know we do bond over beer. Yes, yes, true.
- 25:46Speaker 2: And a New Year's resolution. I've never been sound miserable, don't.
- 25:52Speaker 2: I have never been a New Year's resolution person, and
- 25:55Speaker 2: simply because I don't hold true to it, like I
- 25:59Speaker 2: just don't hold true, I tell you what. And in
- 26:02Speaker 2: all honesty, not that I can necessarily control this, but
- 26:05Speaker 2: I can contribute to it. I just I want human kindness.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I'm a big human kindness person. It's the one thing
- 26:11Speaker 2: that rocks my world. And so obviously last week wasn't
- 26:15Speaker 2: a great rocking of the world. But what I have
- 26:17Speaker 2: loved is watching all the human kindness flood after that,
- 26:20Speaker 2: And I hope that twenty twenty six is full of
- 26:22Speaker 2: human kindness.
- 26:24Speaker 1: And the beauty of actually that is that while you
- 26:26Speaker 1: can't change the world, you can just every little act
- 26:30Speaker 1: that you do in the human kindness space actually does
- 26:33Speaker 1: help sach a difference. You know that all does sound
- 26:36Speaker 1: a little bit we are the world, but I really
- 26:38Speaker 1: mean that that. It's like, well, you can't change everything,
- 26:40Speaker 1: but absolutely what you do makes a different and I
- 26:42Speaker 1: reckon it makes a difference in ways that you don't know. Like,
- 26:45Speaker 1: you know, we were in Europe earlier this year and
- 26:49Speaker 1: we went and we sat on the steps of Manmatra
- 26:51Speaker 1: and there was a busker there singing this song and
- 26:54Speaker 1: we're still singing it as a family, and this guy
- 26:57Speaker 1: has no idea that on the other side of the
- 26:58Speaker 1: world he created some beauty. He just was there singing,
- 27:02Speaker 1: doing what he did. And what eight months later, we're
- 27:06Speaker 1: still remembering that joy that he created then. And it's like,
- 27:09Speaker 1: you don't know, so let's just keep putting it out there.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Lee's New Year's resolution starts smoking.
- 27:15Speaker 2: Oh, keep drinking, get it, get a top like us. Yeah, yeah,
- 27:23Speaker 2: that's true, part of the part of the Yeah, be
- 27:26Speaker 2: part of the gang. I my news resolution. I hadn't
- 27:29Speaker 2: really thought about it untill now, but it is to
- 27:31Speaker 2: maybe keep giving blood. When I went the other day,
- 27:34Speaker 2: I was like, oh, this is not too bad, and
- 27:36Speaker 2: part of it is because it makes me feel good.
- 27:38Speaker 2: The other parties is because the chocolate milkshake after I
- 27:41Speaker 2: have it, Oh my god. I have a theory that
- 27:44Speaker 2: there is nothing as good as a cup of tea
- 27:46Speaker 2: you have after you give birth and the milkshake you
- 27:49Speaker 2: have after you give blood. So I'm not giving birth again,
- 27:53Speaker 2: so I'll give ciche.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Yes, it is great, and I've been on a vow
- 27:59Speaker 1: to get Coxy in to give blood with me. But
- 28:01Speaker 1: that's that has been a great outcome from this, and
- 28:04Speaker 1: I hope that everybody who has donated for the first
- 28:07Speaker 1: time becomes a regular Joiner because you get nice gifts.
- 28:09Speaker 1: I've got a really good coffee cup too that after
- 28:12Speaker 1: a while and everything. Here's a present. You know, I
- 28:14Speaker 1: see her anyway, but thank you, love it goodness. Yeah, Okay, Gordy,
- 28:18Speaker 1: who's going to win sun Corps Super and Neple in
- 28:21Speaker 1: twenty twenty six?
- 28:22Speaker 2: And this is what I'll tell you. I dropped out.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Before and this is I think Dan Ryan's in charge
- 28:26Speaker 1: of my internet, because I was going to say, going
- 28:28Speaker 1: to be tough for West Coast without Sunday and without Janelle, So.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Tough, toughyir friend has had a very good international series
- 28:36Speaker 2: and she'll step up and have an opportunity for a
- 28:37Speaker 2: lot more court times. So I feel like our list
- 28:39Speaker 2: has been covered well, but everyone's up against the eight ball.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I reckon next year just quickly. Next year will be
- 28:45Speaker 2: the toughest season to guess who's who, with so many
- 28:50Speaker 2: changes in teams within reason, new coaches in, and also
- 28:54Speaker 2: a really limited preparation time. So if you've got a
- 28:56Speaker 2: high international number in your list, you get very limited
- 29:01Speaker 2: time to prepare as a collective group, so theirse are
- 29:05Speaker 2: all the dynamics. So I think some sides that might
- 29:07Speaker 2: not necessarily fire early may fire late. You might see
- 29:11Speaker 2: other sides that are kind of clicked quite early but
- 29:13Speaker 2: may not be able to sustain. So I'm not sure.
- 29:16Speaker 2: I do think though, Vixens will be right up there again,
- 29:20Speaker 2: and I think Die Honey will bring something a little
- 29:23Speaker 2: different than Simone and I think that'll put them in
- 29:26Speaker 2: reasonably good stead. And I'd like to think Fever will
- 29:28Speaker 2: still be up there with a red hot crack. It
- 29:30Speaker 2: was interesting, wasn't it.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Both Vixens and Fever had a slow start last year,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and they were the two Grand vinalists Senate going down
- 29:36Speaker 1: to the wire. Yeah, I'm not going to ask you, Liz,
- 29:39Speaker 1: because we've got a we can do that in the
- 29:41Speaker 1: new year. But I do think that I will get
- 29:43Speaker 1: the three of us and Coxy to write and seal
- 29:46Speaker 1: it in an envelope what we think the positions one
- 29:50Speaker 1: through eight will be, and we'll see at the end
- 29:52Speaker 1: of the season who, apart from me, was the least
- 29:55Speaker 1: successful in picking that order.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Oh all right, I mean it's just another pressure, like
- 30:03Speaker 2: tipping my goodness, well that's coming back too. Well.
- 30:08Speaker 1: That is the end of our extraordinary Summer series episode. Gordy,
- 30:12Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. It's always a delight to have
- 30:16Speaker 1: you here. And this has been a it's been a
- 30:18Speaker 1: lovely chat.
- 30:19Speaker 2: I have sworn a lot. I apologize.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I hope that my internet connection Queensland.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Come on, Internet, what's going on. I'm at my dad's house.
- 30:26Speaker 2: Come on.
- 30:27Speaker 1: But yeah, signing off now. I hope everyone has a
- 30:29Speaker 1: great break. We will have Summer series episodes starting again.
- 30:32Speaker 1: We don't drop one on New Year's Eve, but we
- 30:33Speaker 1: do drop another one on January the eighth or the
- 30:37Speaker 1: tenth or something like that, and we've got some amazing
- 30:39Speaker 1: guests throughout January, and then we're back again in early feb.
- 30:43Speaker 2: But I'm Carolyn'swindell. I'm lose Ellis, and all I want
- 30:47Speaker 2: for Christmas is Mariah Carey to piss off. I'm so
- 30:50Speaker 2: God see you Cordy. All right, I have a great
- 30:54Speaker 2: break everyone, Bye, bye all that God. Christmas paris just
- 31:03Speaker 2: one day, I mean, and I don't care about lost persons.
