- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome back to the Elon Musk podcast.
- 0:05This is a show where we discuss the critical crossroads that
- 0:08shape SpaceX, Tesla X, The Boring Company, and Neuralink.
- 0:13And I'm your host, Will Walden. So right now, the space industry
- 0:18is witnessing pretty big shift in the cost dynamics of
- 0:21launching rockets into space. And SpaceX in a Falcon 9 rocket
- 0:26which offering launches for as low as $67 million, has been a
- 0:31disruptive force in reducing space travel cost for about a
- 0:36decade now. Now, in a remarkable crazy turn
- 0:39of events, ULA the United Launch Alliance with it's at a joint
- 0:44venture between aerospace giants Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
- 0:48They're showing a formidable challenge to SpaceX with the
- 0:52Vulcan Centaur rocket, brand new rocket that's potential
- 0:55levelling of the playing field with this competitive space
- 0:59market. Between SpaceX and every other
- 1:01competitor you know, Spacex's journey in lowering space travel
- 1:05costs has been pretty well documented, slashing prices from
- 1:091 standard $400 million per launch to about $70 million.
- 1:15And the development of their Starship vehicle, aiming to
- 1:18launch more cargo for a significantly less, shows that
- 1:22they're going to get even better at what they do.
- 1:25However, despite the progress, the Starship is yet to complete
- 1:29a successful test flight to orbit, leaving room for
- 1:32competitors to play a little bit of catch up here.
- 1:36Now ULA, which is long perceived as an old space program and
- 1:42they're trailing behind SpaceX in cost effectiveness, appears
- 1:45to have made it a leap forward with the Vulcan Centaur rocket.
- 1:49Originally replacing the costly D4 Heavy.
- 1:52The Centaur rocket is being positioned by ULA is a cost
- 1:56competitive alternative to Spacex's Falcon 9 and other
- 1:59offerings, with an aim to launch for under $100 million.
- 2:05Now, the allocation of 21 launch contracts by the US Space Force,
- 2:09split almost evenly between SpaceX and ULA, has been a
- 2:13spotlight on the pricing strategies of both companies.
- 2:16ULA secured 11 launches at an average cost of about $118
- 2:20million per launch. Marginally undercutting SpaceX
- 2:24is $120 million per launch now. This suggests a very narrow gap
- 2:30now between the two rivals, and despite the apparent parody and
- 2:33launch costs, a deeper analysis reveals nuances though.
- 2:38Ula's launches are all slated for the Vulcan Centaur, whereas
- 2:42Spacex's contracts include both Falcon 9 and the more expensive
- 2:46Falcon Heavy launches. Adjusting for this mix, Big
- 2:49Six's Falcon 9 launches would still be slightly more expensive
- 2:53on average, but the difference is increasingly marginal now.
- 2:56The pricing parity between SpaceX and ULA raises questions
- 2:59about the future financial performance of Boeing and
- 3:02Lockheed Martin, though, which is the parent companies, the
- 3:04ULA. And there's speculation that
- 3:06they might sell ULA. But even if they retain
- 3:09ownership, the impact on revenue and profit margins remains
- 3:12uncertain. Lockheed has already seen a
- 3:15decline in space revenue and profit margins due to
- 3:18competition from SpaceX. And if the Vulcan Centaur proves
- 3:22cheaper to build and operate than UL as previous outlets and
- 3:26Delta rockets, it could stabilize or even improve the
- 3:29company's financials. This will be a welcome
- 3:31development for investors in Bowie and Lockheed, aligning
- 3:34with ULACEO Tory Bruno, friend of the show commitment to
- 3:38reducing launch costs. Now SpaceX continues to
- 3:41demonstrate its capabilities with recent successful launches.
- 3:44The USSF 52 mission for the US Space Force using the Falcon
- 3:48Heavy was launched from Kennedy Space Center carrying the Boeing
- 3:51built X37B. They work together here, and
- 3:55this mission highlights that SpaceX will of course work with
- 3:58anybody, as long as they're giving the money to launch
- 4:00whatever they want to launch. Now, the X37B, which is a
- 4:03reusable spacecraft, it's a space plane similar to the old
- 4:06space shuttle, is set to test new space domain awareness
- 4:10technologies and other experiments.
- 4:12Now this mission, according to Boeing's top secret, will push
- 4:15the boundaries of space exploration and offer benefits
- 4:18to the wider space faring community.
- 4:21And this is an innovative program by Boeing and the Space
- 4:25Force launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket.
- 4:28Now, the successful launch of the USSF 52 mission shows that
- 4:31the US Space Force's dedication of national security and
- 4:34technological advancement, and they will use any vendor that
- 4:39will give them a good price. So could it be ULA?
- 4:43Could it be SpaceX in the future?
- 4:44We're not 100% sure, but probably both in the coming
- 4:48years. Now, the recent developments in
- 4:49the space launch market reflect a kind of evolving landscape
- 4:53here, where price competitiveness is finally
- 4:56becoming increasingly crucial. Companies like ULA have had high
- 5:00prices 4 decades, and now ULAS, Vulcan, Centaur, and Spacex's
- 5:05Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets are at the forefront of
- 5:08these shifts, offering more cost effective solutions for both
- 5:12commercial and government space missions.
- 5:15And as ULA and SpaceX continue to vie for dominance in the
- 5:18space launch market, the industry is likely to witness
- 5:22further innovations and cost reductions.
- 5:24The competition between these two mega giants not only
- 5:27influences the respective financial performances, but also
- 5:30shapes the future trajectory of space exploration and tech.
- 5:34Now, investors in Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and other
- 5:36companies involved in the space industry will closely monitor
- 5:39this. The balance between maintaining
- 5:41profitability and staying competitive in pricing will be
- 5:44crucial for these companies to continue offering services to
- 5:48the government Now. This reduction in launch cost
- 5:51has broader implications for the overall space exploration field.
- 5:56Lower costs open up new possibilities for scientific
- 5:58research, satellite deployment and even human rated crude
- 6:03missions to space. Now this could potentially
- 6:06accelerate the pace of discovery and innovation in outer space.
- 6:11Government entities like the US Space Force also play a role in
- 6:15this, not only as customers, but also as partners in advancing
- 6:19technological capabilities. Their contracts and missions are
- 6:22vital for the sustained growth and development of space
- 6:25capabilities. Most of our technology now was
- 6:28built in the space age when government contracts were huge
- 6:33with companies like this and they innovative so many
- 6:36technological leaps due to this competition.
- 6:40So SpaceX, ULA, this competition is great, not just for them, but
- 6:45for all of us involved. Now, this is an important
- 6:48juncture right now between ULA, Vulcan Centaur, and Spacex's
- 6:53Falcon 9 Falcon Heavy rockets. This competition is not just
- 6:57about market share though, and not just about money, but also
- 7:00about our own futures. And these companies will
- 7:03continue to innovate and will continue to drive down costs.
- 7:07Because if they can drive down costs, they'll get more money
- 7:10from the government and more money from the Department of
- 7:13Defense. And they'll innovate for all of
