Transcript
- 0:07Daniel Moore: Most couples don't get married thinking one day our marriage is going to shape future generations.
- 0:13Daniel Moore: They usually are more concerned with figuring out why there's 12 plastic containers with no matching lids, or who accidentally left one sock in the washing machine again.
- 0:22Daniel Moore: But whether we realize it or not, every marriage is telling a story, and every couple is leaving a legacy.
- 0:28Daniel Moore: The question isn't if you'll leave one, it's what kind you'll leave.
- 0:33Daniel Moore: This week we're talking about building a marriage that points people to Christ, influences the next generation, and leaves something far more valuable than money or possessions.
- 0:42Daniel Moore: So grab a cup of coffee, go ahead and laugh with us a little this week, and let's discover how ordinary everyday faithfulness can create an extraordinary legacy that lasts for eternity.

- 1:37Michelle Moore: Yay!
- 1:38Daniel Moore: The very last episode of our series on marriage as a mission.
- 1:42Daniel Moore: And of course, as usual, just want to make sure you know if this is maybe the first episode you've tuned into, that we do have a book that this is based on.

- 1:57Daniel Moore: There's also a six-session study guide that goes along with it, which works really well for small groups, uh, church groups, whatever it may be.
- 2:05Daniel Moore: Uh it works really good for that.
- 2:07Daniel Moore: And so go ahead and pick one up.
- 2:09Daniel Moore: And if you go back and listen to all these episodes, it goes right with that book.
- 2:14Daniel Moore: Uh but this week we're going to be wrapping up uh the first of two episodes here as we finish up this series.
- 2:22Daniel Moore: This one here is entitled Leaving a Legacy: Marriage That Multiplies.
- 2:53Michelle Moore: No, most mornings look a little different than that.
- 2:56Michelle Moore: They're usually trying to figure out who left the laundry sitting in the washer long enough to qualify for an archaeological study, who forgot to take the chicken out of the freezer, or why there are six coffee mugs scattered throughout the house when there are only two people living in it.
- 3:14Michelle Moore: Legacy?
- 3:16Michelle Moore: That often sounds like something reserved for billionaires with whose names are engraved on buildings, famous pastors who write best-selling books, or historical figures who accomplish extraordinary things.
- 3:30Michelle Moore: But according to scripture, legacy isn't reserved for a select few.
- 3:35Michelle Moore: It's something every married couple is called to build.
- 3:39Michelle Moore: The truth is, whether we realize it or not, every marriage is leaving a legacy.
- 3:44Michelle Moore: The only question is what kind?
- 3:47Michelle Moore: Psalm 78.4 reminds us the importance of passing God's faithfulness to the next generation.
- 3:54Michelle Moore: We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.
- 4:02Michelle Moore: While this verse is often applied to parenting, it also reflects a broader principle.
- 4:09Michelle Moore: God desires his people to leave behind evidence of his work in their lives.
- 4:15Michelle Moore: A godly legacy isn't measured by the size of your bank account, the square footage of your house, or the number of followers on your social media account.
- 4:25Michelle Moore: It's measured by faithfulness.
- 4:27Michelle Moore: It's measured by the way you loved each other, served one another, honored Christ together, and impacted the people God placed in your path.
- 4:38Daniel Moore: So as we start this week, I think after all the things that we've been through with these different episodes that we've covered in the last 11 episodes, which basically equals out to 22 weeks because each one had two episodes in it, this is where we end up at.
- 4:55Daniel Moore: And this one here, honestly, I think a lot of couples fail in this one because I think in a lot of ways we don't think about the legacy that we're leaving after we're gone from here.
- 5:10Daniel Moore: And some people do, and they really work hard to strive towards that.
- 5:16Daniel Moore: Uh they pour into their kids, they pour into their relationships, uh, they try to, you know, be there for help for other couples.
- 5:23Daniel Moore: There's just a lot of things that go into what it means to leave a lasting legacy.
- 5:28Daniel Moore: But then you have a lot of couples that it seems like for most of their marriage, they just slide by, you know.
- 5:34Daniel Moore: Um they they seem to never really figure it out sometimes, and they just tolerate each other.
- 5:39Daniel Moore: And, you know, those legacies are not the best kind to leave because a lot of times those are the ones that the kids grow up watching, and then they create their own issues later on.
- 5:50Daniel Moore: And so whenever uh finished up this book and got to the last chapter, you know, I just felt like this was really the best way to end this because if you're going to be mission-minded in your marriage and you're going to make sure that you have a goal in your marriage, you have a mission in your marriage, and you're going to follow that mission, especially the one that God's placed before you, then we know that anytime that we do something for God, it needs to be something that somebody behind you looks and remembers that.
- 6:23Daniel Moore: You know, so-and-so did this, God led them in that direction, and they made a huge difference in this area or that area.
- 6:29Daniel Moore: And you'll leave memories because God had his fingerprints on that.
- 6:35Daniel Moore: And so that doesn't uh our marriages are not exempt from that.
- 6:40Daniel Moore: You know, when it comes down to the establishment that God created, because as we talked from the very beginning of this uh series here, we know that God created marriage, it was his his idea, and he created male and female, man and woman, to have that relationship.
- 6:59Daniel Moore: And he wanted us to follow his map and follow his blueprint.
- 7:03Daniel Moore: And we know that anytime God has a blueprint for anything, he has a reason for that.
- 7:09Daniel Moore: And that means he wants us to be a blessing to other people.
- 7:12Daniel Moore: He wants us to pour into other people, and he wants to make sure that whenever we do, that we are fulfilled, even within our own selves, that we are making a difference.
- 7:23Daniel Moore: And so to get started here this week, uh the first point here is the greatest inheritance that you can leave behind isn't wealth, it's a life that points others to Jesus.
- 7:33Daniel Moore: When God designed marriage, he never intended it to be merely a private relationship that existed for personal happiness alone.
- 7:40Daniel Moore: Marriage was created to display his glory, reflect his character, and become a living testimony of his love.
- 7:47Daniel Moore: In Ephesians 5, 31 and 32, it reveals that marriage points beyond itself to something much bigger.
- 7:53Daniel Moore: It points to the relationship between Christ and His church.
- 7:56Daniel Moore: Every act of sacrificial love, every extension of grace, every moment of forgiveness becomes a small picture of the gospel.
- 8:05Daniel Moore: And you know, as we look at it that way, you know, think about that for a moment.
- 8:09Daniel Moore: When a husband chooses patience instead of irritation, what's he doing?
- 8:13Michelle Moore: He's reflecting.
- 8:14Michelle Moore: He's reflecting Christ.
- 8:16Daniel Moore: When a wife extends grace instead of keeping score, what is she doing?
- 8:20Michelle Moore: Reflecting Christ.
- 8:21Daniel Moore: Exactly.
- 8:22Daniel Moore: And then when you bring both spouses together and they choose unity over being quote unquote right, what are they doing?
- 8:29Daniel Moore: Reflecting Christ.
- 8:30Daniel Moore: And that last one can be a challenge because in this world that we're in, being human, you know, we always have that want, want to to be right.
- 8:42Daniel Moore: You know, we we want to get everybody to see our side of it and see our point.
- 8:46Daniel Moore: And some people are way more pushy with that than others.
- 8:50Daniel Moore: And so that's something that's real hard sometimes for couples to navigate through, is that unity that God has called us to.
- 8:57Daniel Moore: But as we've been talking about through this whole series, it's all been about that.
- 9:01Daniel Moore: It's about being a reflection of Christ and being Christ-like in our relationship so that others can see the gospel through us.
- 9:10Daniel Moore: So sometimes in marriage, two people can spend 20 minutes arguing over where to eat dinner and then spend the next 30 minutes sitting silently in the restaurant that they finally agreed upon.
- 9:19Daniel Moore: And when that scenario happens, that's not exactly kingdom impact.
- 9:23Daniel Moore: Yet God continually calls us back to something higher.
- 9:27Daniel Moore: And, you know, we have to remember that a strong marriage isn't built by winning arguments, it's built by winning hearts.
- 9:33Daniel Moore: And I think when we look at it that way, you know, I know for myself, it gives me a whole different outlook on it.
- 9:39Daniel Moore: And I know that, you know, you and I both have strived, we've both striven in the marriage that we have, especially as we've, you know, fixed the things and the issues that we've had, we've made it an effort to have the priority in our life be God, to keep God in the middle of all of that.
- 9:58Daniel Moore: And the things that you and I do right now with, you know, the podcast ministry, the marriage ministry, you know, we don't do that to say, look at us.
- 10:08Daniel Moore: Um it's far from that.
- 10:09Daniel Moore: You know, I think, you know, both of us are humble in all of this.
- 10:13Daniel Moore: We're we're both super thankful that God's even chosen us to have this type of a ministry because even within our own selves, we don't feel like we're qualified for that.
- 10:23Daniel Moore: But God sees more than we do, and he has that plan in front of us.
- 10:28Daniel Moore: All he all we have to do is say yes.
- 10:31Daniel Moore: And when that calling is on our life, he's gonna bless what he calls us to.
- 10:36Daniel Moore: So why don't you go ahead and share the next point there?
- 10:38Michelle Moore: Yeah, being right may satisfy your pride for a moment, but preserving unity strengthens your marriage for a lifetime.
- 10:46Michelle Moore: The legacy God called us to build is not a legacy of perfection.
- 10:52Michelle Moore: Let me read this again because that's like a, you know, the legacy God calls us to build is not a legacy of perfection.
- 11:01Michelle Moore: That's good news because none of us could achieve it anyway.
- 11:06Michelle Moore: Instead, he calls us to leave a legacy of faithfulness.
- 11:11Michelle Moore: Faithfulness when life is easy, faithfulness when life is hard, faithfulness when the finances are tight, and faithfulness when the health challenges arise.
- 11:26Michelle Moore: Faithfulness when expectations go unmet, faithfulness when the feelings aren't as strong as they once were.
- 11:34Michelle Moore: Galatians 6 9 encourages us, let us not become weary in doing good.
- 11:40Michelle Moore: For all the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
- 11:45Michelle Moore: Many couples underestimate the power of consistent faithfulness.
- 11:50Michelle Moore: They think they need some grand accomplishment to make a difference, but often the greatest legacy is built through thousands of ordinary moments of obedience.
- 12:02Michelle Moore: A husband praying with his wife before work, or a wife encouraging her husband after a difficult day, a couple serving together in their church, parents modeling forgiveness in front of their children, spouses choosing kindness during stressful seasons.
- 12:21Michelle Moore: All these moments may seem small, but they are laying bricks in a foundation that can impact generations.
- 12:28Michelle Moore: Legacy is rarely built in the spotlight.
- 12:31Michelle Moore: It's built in the quiet faithfulness of everyday life.
- 12:35Daniel Moore: And what's interesting to me is as you were, you know, going through that little section there, all those faithfulness statements.
- 12:43Daniel Moore: You know, I can look back and we've experienced all of those in our life in the time that we've been married.
- 12:49Daniel Moore: You know, we've had our moments when it did seem like it was kind of easy for us.
- 12:54Daniel Moore: And we're kind of back to that point now where I feel like, you know, things are a lot smoother sailing than what they've been lots of times before.
- 13:03Daniel Moore: We've also been where life was hard.
- 13:05Daniel Moore: Our finances have been tight several times for long periods of time.
- 13:10Daniel Moore: And we've had the health challenges.
- 13:11Daniel Moore: We talked about that in the last couple of weeks on our last couple of episodes.
- 13:15Daniel Moore: Uh, we've had met expectations.
- 13:19Daniel Moore: Uh, you know, the feelings aren't as strong as they once were.
- 13:23Daniel Moore: We went through a time in our life when we almost got divorced.
- 13:26Daniel Moore: You know, it's crazy how when we look at all of that and we realize where we've been and where we are now, it did take faithfulness to get back to that place where we need to be.
- 13:40Daniel Moore: And God does reward for that.
- 13:44Daniel Moore: We have to remember that your marriage is writing a story every day.
- 13:47Daniel Moore: Future generations may read chapters you don't even realize that you're writing.
- 13:51Daniel Moore: And I think this point is super important because I think sometimes we do take things for granted.
- 13:57Daniel Moore: I think that there are some things that we do sometimes as an individual and even as a couple that we think it's just a everyday occurrence.
- 14:05Daniel Moore: It's something that we kind of do on a normal basis and we don't really read too much into it.
- 14:10Daniel Moore: But there are some of those things sometimes people are watching and they are gleaning from that.
- 14:15Daniel Moore: We don't know, we're unaware, but they are learning from us and what we're doing.
- 14:20Daniel Moore: Something that we think is just kind of boring and mundane.
- 14:23Daniel Moore: To them, it's a life-changing, you know, situation for them in that moment.
- 14:28Daniel Moore: So we always have to, in everything that we do, we have to do it expecting that maybe somebody might be watching.
- 14:35Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 14:35Daniel Moore: And they might be learning and growing because of what we're, you know, putting an example of as a married couple.
- 14:42Daniel Moore: Marriage isn't simply about looking good together and matching Christmas sweaters or posting vacation photos where everyone appears perfectly happy.
- 14:50Daniel Moore: There's nothing wrong with those things, but that isn't the ultimate goal.
- 14:53Daniel Moore: The goal is becoming the kind of couple who walks through life hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, pursuing God's purposes together.
- 15:01Daniel Moore: If we look at Ecclesiastes 4.9, it reminds us that two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.
- 15:08Daniel Moore: Marriage was designed to be a partnership, and it was also designed to be one with a purpose.
- 15:12Michelle Moore: That's good.
- 15:13Daniel Moore: There's a reason for the partnership that we have.
- 15:16Daniel Moore: God calls couples to become teammates rather than opponents, to fight for each other rather than against each other, and to lock arms against the challenges of life rather than turning on one another when difficulties arise.
- 15:28Daniel Moore: And that one's real easy to do.
- 15:29Daniel Moore: You know, if we get under fire on some things, uh depending on our personalities, especially if it's a personal attack, sometimes we want to just deal with that by ourselves.
- 15:38Daniel Moore: And we don't have good luck with that sometimes because that's exactly what it is.
- 15:43Daniel Moore: It's a person trying to fight through something on their own with no help.
- 15:47Daniel Moore: And that's a good time when you can lean on your spouse if it's something that they can help, you know, pray beside you, uh, maybe offer you some encouragement.
- 15:56Daniel Moore: They might even have, you know, some good words of uh confidence to instill inside of you.
- 16:02Daniel Moore: There's a lot of things where your spouse is is super uh valuable in those moments.
- 16:07Daniel Moore: And so we need to always make sure that no matter what trials we go through, to remember that our best battle partner is sitting right beside us, and that's our spouse.
- 16:19Daniel Moore: So go ahead and share the next one there.
- 16:22Michelle Moore: Yeah, the strongest marriages aren't two perfect people standing face to face, admiring each other.
- 16:28Michelle Moore: They're two imperfect people standing shoulder to shoulder, pursuing God together.
- 16:33Michelle Moore: That means weathering the storms together, it means surviving sleepless nights with newborns, toddlers, it means navigating financial pressures, it means extending grace after misunderstandings, it means laughing together when dinner gets burned, vacations plans fall apart, or one spouse confidently insists they know the correct driving route right before getting hopelessly lost.
- 17:01Michelle Moore: But even in those moments, godly couples keep coming back to the same commitment.
- 17:06Michelle Moore: We're in this together, not just for our comfort, not just for our happiness, but for God's purposes.
- 17:15Michelle Moore: But ultimately, marriage is about something bigger than us.
- 17:19Michelle Moore: The world often encourages couples to chase experiences, popularity, and picture perfect moment.
- 17:26Michelle Moore: Yet God's call is different.
- 17:28Michelle Moore: He calls us to chase impact, to chase faithfulness, to chase obedience, to chase the internal things that matter long after the vacation photos have disappeared and social media posts have been forgotten.
- 17:43Michelle Moore: The world celebrates moments, God celebrates faithfulness.
- 17:48Michelle Moore: Your marriage may not make headlines, but it can make an internal difference.
- 17:53Daniel Moore: And now you know where we're at at this point in our marriage, uh after everything that we've been through, do you feel like that you've kind of changed how you look at things with our relationship in a more positive way?
- 18:06Michelle Moore: Oh, absolutely.
- 18:08Daniel Moore: And whenever you get the opportunity to pour into some close friends or be able to, they have something come up that they've never navigated, but you and I have, and you're able to go up to them and pray over them and give them encouragement, use us as a testimony, say, you know what, we went through this, and this is what we had to do, and God was right there with us and helped us through all of that.
- 18:33Daniel Moore: How's that make you feel when you can do that?
- 18:36Michelle Moore: Well, I I mean, I give the glory to God, first of all.
- 18:40Michelle Moore: Um, but I mean, it does make me feel like, okay, God, we walked this hard season for a reason, and you're gonna utilize me.
- 18:49Michelle Moore: And so, yeah, it I mean, it's like he put me at the right place, the right time, and it's according to him.
- 18:56Daniel Moore: Yep.
- 18:57Daniel Moore: And at that moment, it's up to us to answer that call or ignore it.
- 19:01Daniel Moore: And anytime that God opens a door, we need to be prepared to walk right through that.
- 19:06Daniel Moore: And even if we feel like it's a problem that's bigger than us, because there's a lot of those.
- 19:11Daniel Moore: There's a lot of times we get ourselves in situations where it seems like we just don't know what to do, but that's where God comes in.
- 19:18Daniel Moore: And we can pull him right to the middle of all of that scenario and ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us, to give us wisdom, and we can make it through anything, right?
- 19:28Daniel Moore: As long as we have, you know, God right there on our side.
- 19:32Daniel Moore: And so that's why, you know, as as you and I have said a few times, you know, neither of us wanted to go through everything we went through.
- 19:42Daniel Moore: But because we did and we're already past all of that, we are thankful for what we've been through to be able to pour into other people.
- 19:50Daniel Moore: And I think that, you know, I cherish those moments that I get the opportunity to pray with someone or to be able to pour into them because they're really hurting.
- 20:00Daniel Moore: And I've been there and done that, and I have the ability to tell them that I walk this path, and this is how you and I got through it with God in the middle of that.
- 20:10Daniel Moore: And then if if they take the advice with that and they put it into play, and then they have success with all of that, it makes that whole testimony worth every bit of it.
- 20:20Daniel Moore: And there's there's just things about that.
- 20:23Daniel Moore: Again, it's it's not anything to do with us, it's just a place that God has called us to and a place that He has put us in.
- 20:29Daniel Moore: We're his hands and feet at that moment.
- 20:32Daniel Moore: And that's to me, it has a lot to do with what leaving this legacy as a married couple is all about.
- 20:39Daniel Moore: You know, a marriage centered on purpose will outlast a marriage built solely on feelings.
- 20:44Daniel Moore: This is a really big one.
- 20:46Daniel Moore: You know, one day when our lives are finished and our marriage story has been fully written, God won't be asking how many likes our anniversary photos received or how impressive our wedding hashtags were.
- 20:58Daniel Moore: He'll see something far more important.
- 21:00Daniel Moore: He'll see whether we love faithfully, he'll see if we serve sacrificially, he'll see if we forgave generously, he'll see if we persevered through difficulties, or if we honored him with the relationship that he entrusted to us.
- 21:13Daniel Moore: That's the kind of legacy that echoes into eternity.
- 21:17Daniel Moore: So as we're going through this episode this week, here's a challenge.
- 21:22Daniel Moore: Let's be the couples who don't merely coast through marriage.
- 21:25Daniel Moore: Let's be couples who pursue God together.
- 21:27Daniel Moore: Let's be couples who laugh often, love deeply, forgive quickly, and serve faithfully.
- 21:33Daniel Moore: Let's be remembered as the husband and wife who stormed through life and faith, purpose, perseverance, and joy.
- 21:40Daniel Moore: Because in the end, God isn't simply measuring how comfortable we were, he's looking at how faithful we were.
- 21:48Daniel Moore: A lasting legacy is not built by extraordinary moments, it is built by ordinary people faithfully walking with an extraordinary God, and that's a legacy worth living.
- 22:00Daniel Moore: And, you know, there's just so much stuff here that's been packed into this first portion of our episode this week that I hope maybe something that we've covered here has maybe triggered you a little bit to look a little deeper into the marriages that you guys have that are listening.
- 22:14Daniel Moore: You know, what is your intentions with your marriage?
- 22:17Daniel Moore: Do you have goals?
- 22:18Daniel Moore: Are you really concerned with how God looks at the relationship that He's given you and your spouse to the point that you are in a spot that you can actually give of yourselves to others and help them to grow and help them have a better marriage and get more out of life, especially when it comes to living the gospel and being Christ-like in front of them.
- 22:40Daniel Moore: You know, those are huge questions that we have to ask as married couples as we walk this path together in this time that we are in the next part here that we're going to talk about this week, and as we continue this episode, is discipling younger people.
- 23:20Daniel Moore: And why don't you go ahead and start with?
- 23:22Michelle Moore: As we grow and mature in our marriages, it's easy to settle into a rhythm.
- 23:26Michelle Moore: Date nights required advanced planning.
- 23:29Michelle Moore: Communication becomes smoother, and we figured out which battles are worth fighting for.
- 23:35Michelle Moore: But with that experience comes responsibility.
- 23:38Michelle Moore: Just like Jesus poured into his disciples sharing wisdom, truth, and humility, we are called to do the same for the younger couples coming behind us.
- 23:48Michelle Moore: Jesus didn't walk his journey alone.
- 23:59Michelle Moore: His motto wasn't just about preaching sermons, it was about doing life together.
- 24:05Michelle Moore: He showed them how to rest, how to pray, how to handle conflict, and even how to deal with people who doubted or betrayed you.
- 24:14Michelle Moore: Because let's be real, every marriage will deal with a chair of Judas moments.
- 24:19Michelle Moore: In the same way, we seasoned couples should be looking around and asking, who can we walk alongside?
- 24:27Michelle Moore: Not because we have it all figured out.
- 24:29Michelle Moore: Trust me, sometimes we're still arguing about who left the car on empty.
- 24:35Michelle Moore: But because we've learned a few things and have the scars and prayer journals to prove it.
- 24:42Michelle Moore: Discipling younger couples doesn't mean putting together a PowerPoint presentation on communication techniques.
- 24:49Michelle Moore: It means inviting them into your real life.
- 24:52Michelle Moore: Show them how you pray together, even when you're both exhausted and one style, one eye is still open.
- 24:59Michelle Moore: Let them see how you navigate disagreements without tearing each other down.
- 25:04Michelle Moore: Be honest about your mistakes and generous with your encouragement.
- 25:09Michelle Moore: The legacy of a strong marriage is the legacy of a strong marriage isn't just what we build in our own home.
- 25:17Michelle Moore: It's also about the seeds we plant in others.
- 25:20Michelle Moore: So let's follow Jesus' lead.
- 25:22Michelle Moore: Let's take a few younger couples under our wing, buy them some coffee, share your mess and your victories, and remind them that God is writing a good story in their marriage as well.
- 25:34Michelle Moore: Because one day they'll be seasoned ones, and hopefully they'll think back and say, We had someone who walked with us, now it's our turn.
- 25:44Michelle Moore: Discipling a couple isn't about being perfect or having all the right answers.
- 25:49Michelle Moore: It's about being intentional, authentic, and available.
- 25:54Michelle Moore: And at its core, it means walking alongside another couple, helping them grow in their relationship with each other and with Christ.
- 26:03Michelle Moore: It looks a whole lot like real life.
- 26:07Michelle Moore: Sitting at the dinner table, praying together, sharing honest stories of your own struggles and victories.
- 26:14Michelle Moore: It's not about creating a flawless sermon on a marriage.
- 26:17Michelle Moore: It's about giving them a front row seat to how God shows up in a real and sometimes messy and sometimes miraculous marriage.
- 26:27Michelle Moore: Think of it like a spiritual mentorship with a relational twist.
- 26:31Michelle Moore: It's smiling and saying, We've been there too, and we're still choosing each other every day.
- 26:38Michelle Moore: But here's how you can do it with God at the center.
- 26:41Daniel Moore: And what I love about this is I can think of, I think back to life group.
- 26:46Daniel Moore: So we had a life group uh here for a couple of years uh with the church that we have right now over the past couple of years.
- 26:54Daniel Moore: We don't have it right at the moment because we've had other things that we've moved on into, but um, our life group was a wide range of ages.
- 27:04Daniel Moore: And I think what would you say it was probably from the 30s up to 70s?
- 27:09Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 27:09Daniel Moore: Probably.
- 27:10Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 27:11Daniel Moore: And what I what was really cool about that was even you and I, we we gained so much from the older ones.
- 27:19Michelle Moore: Oh yeah.
- 27:20Daniel Moore: Uh we loved it.
- 27:21Daniel Moore: Oh, we'd be sitting there, you know, sharing stories and then we'd be going through our lessons and just the different things.
- 27:27Daniel Moore: And it was so fun just to listen to them talk about their life experiences.
- 27:33Daniel Moore: And when and they had good marriages, and so whenever you are actually able to be in the presence of someone like that that's been married for many, many years, and who have gone through all their messes.
- 27:45Daniel Moore: Yep.
- 27:45Daniel Moore: And they were actually navigating some family stuff even in the last couple of years at the age that they're at.
- 27:52Daniel Moore: Uh, because you know, at that age you start losing parents and different kinds of things, had to be caretakers.
- 27:57Daniel Moore: And so they were going through their own battles.
- 28:00Daniel Moore: But I just remember, and I'll probably always remember, those times when we'd be sitting here uh at our house during life group just listening to the stories that they would share.
- 28:10Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 28:10Daniel Moore: And then I also think about older couples at our church uh that actually do mentor.
- 28:16Daniel Moore: We've we've actually got a couple that uh does marriage mentorship with us.
- 28:21Daniel Moore: They're one of the mentor couples that are under us uh for a long time now.
- 28:26Daniel Moore: They pick out younger couples in the church and they'll ask them to go eat somewhere and they'll just pour into them.
- 28:32Daniel Moore: And then they'll have some that knows that they do that, so they'll come up and ask them and they'll talk to them about things that are going on in their life.
- 28:39Daniel Moore: And when I think about stuff like that, I'm like, you know, that's what it's all about.
- 28:45Daniel Moore: Because we shouldn't waste all the stuff that we go through that we learn lessons from.
- 28:51Daniel Moore: We need to be utilizing some of that stuff and pouring into other people that are now struggling with what we used to struggle with.
- 28:57Daniel Moore: And it's a good thing for us to be able to pour into them and to help them to grow.
- 29:02Daniel Moore: And, you know, I I wish that at one point in time earlier when, you know, you and I were having a lot of our issues, you know, back then we really didn't have a whole lot of people that we I would really consider were really mentors around us necessarily.
- 29:17Daniel Moore: Uh we're just a I mean, it's a God thing that we're married because we did work through a lot of our stuff on our own.
- 29:23Michelle Moore: Well, and we hit it.
- 29:24Michelle Moore: I mean, just like younger couples.
- 29:26Michelle Moore: I mean, even middle-aged couples, a lot of people don't like talking about their issues to other people.
- 29:32Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 29:33Daniel Moore: And that's one thing I am thankful for with the couples that were in our life group.
- 29:37Daniel Moore: They were very open and very real while they were here.
- 29:42Daniel Moore: I mean, they had us laughing constantly.
- 29:44Daniel Moore: It was just, it was so much fun.
- 29:46Daniel Moore: And I guess what I'm getting at with all of that is just encouraging you, for one thing, that's why it's good to have a church family, because you're gonna have that opportunity to be around all different kinds, all different age groups, all different walks of life.
- 30:00Daniel Moore: Uh, you're gonna be around the people that it seems like they just had a perfect marriage from day one.
- 30:05Daniel Moore: And you're gonna be around people that'll sit there and tell you that they literally almost got divorced five times, but they're still hanging on and they're still plowing through it all.
- 30:14Daniel Moore: You'll see everything if you take the time to talk to people and allow them to pour into you.
- 30:20Daniel Moore: And it's it's a good thing to have older people that have been there and been and done that uh to be there as mentors because then you, you know, you feel like you're not all alone.
- 30:30Daniel Moore: You're not out there on this little island trying to fight for yourself.
- 30:33Michelle Moore: Right.
- 30:34Daniel Moore: And so we got a few points here to go through on some effective ways that you can disciple a couple and leave a lasting legacy because we can't stress enough through this episode that you are not married just for yourself.
- 30:49Daniel Moore: This is we've been trying to get this point across from the very beginning of this series.
- 30:54Daniel Moore: God has a purpose for your marriage, He has a purpose for all the things you've been through, all the things that you've been able to overcome and accomplish.
- 31:02Daniel Moore: There's a reason for all of that.
- 31:04Daniel Moore: And God wants you to use it.
- 31:06Daniel Moore: He doesn't want you to just keep it to yourself.
- 31:08Daniel Moore: Right.
- 31:08Daniel Moore: And so, those of you that are listening and you have a church family or you have a situation where you're in groups all the time where you have younger couples below you that can learn from life experiences you've been through.
- 31:21Daniel Moore: Uh, this is actually, you know, really specifically for you that we're going to go through here.
- 31:26Daniel Moore: We've got seven things, effective ways that you can disciple a couple if you're having a question on, well, how do I do that?
- 31:33Daniel Moore: You know, how do I pour into a couple that's below me below me or younger?
- 31:37Daniel Moore: Well, the first thing is be available and approachable.
- 31:41Daniel Moore: And just as I was just talking, life groups is a good example of a way that you can do that.
- 31:47Daniel Moore: Open your home in your lives, you know, invite them over for dinner or coffee.
- 31:52Daniel Moore: Let them see how you interact in both peace and conflict.
- 31:56Daniel Moore: Let them ask the hard questions and be real in your responses.
- 32:00Daniel Moore: And I think, you know, the really good point to that there is to be truthful.
- 32:04Daniel Moore: Don't hide, you talked about a while ago how we hid stuff.
- 32:08Daniel Moore: And that's not a good thing when your other people are need to learn from you, you know.
- 32:14Daniel Moore: We need to be a little bit more transparent with the things that we've walked through because there might be a couple someday that you talk to about an experience that you had that that's the thing they needed right at that moment.
- 32:24Michelle Moore: Well, and I think a lot of times some people, when it says open your home in your lives, invite them over for dinner or coffee.
- 32:31Michelle Moore: A lot of times, um, I feel like people don't feel like their home is not good enough, or what, you know, we don't want them to come over because, you know, this is the way we live, and it, you know, or it's just not good enough for these people.
- 32:46Michelle Moore: I would rather be invited over to a house that's real and lift in than I would be not invited.
- 32:54Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 32:54Michelle Moore: Because honestly, I mean, it's kind of like you and me.
- 32:57Michelle Moore: You're really weird about the house more than I am.
- 33:00Michelle Moore: And I could care less.
- 33:02Michelle Moore: We have a big golden doodle that's our son's, and Blue kind of sheds some.
- 33:06Michelle Moore: So we call him the tumbleweeds.
- 33:08Michelle Moore: He sheds a lot.
- 33:08Michelle Moore: He doesn't shed a lot.
- 33:10Michelle Moore: You see the tumbleweeds rolling around.
- 33:13Michelle Moore: And Dan's like, oh, we gotta clean, we gotta clean.
- 33:15Daniel Moore: And I'm like, baby dog every day.
- 33:17Daniel Moore: No, it's not.
- 33:19Michelle Moore: So I'm like, you know what?
- 33:21Michelle Moore: These are our friends.
- 33:23Michelle Moore: And even if they're not our friends, they're gonna love us no matter what.
- 33:26Michelle Moore: We're they're not here to see our house.
- 33:29Michelle Moore: Maybe they are, I don't know.
- 33:31Michelle Moore: They, you know, I want them to always feel welcome, you know.
- 33:35Michelle Moore: And I always don't, you know, want me or want people to look at me or my house or anything like that and think, oh, you know, that's just I can't be real with them because you know, they're on a different level.
- 33:46Michelle Moore: That's the enemy.
- 33:49Michelle Moore: And if you need to talk to anybody at any time, I I always, hey, our door's open.
- 33:55Michelle Moore: We do have a coffee machine, just pop right in.
- 33:58Michelle Moore: But after nine o'clock, I'm checked out.
- 34:00Daniel Moore: Yep.
- 34:01Michelle Moore: So, but just remember let people see the real you because in all reality, it is the real stuff that gets messy.
- 34:10Daniel Moore: Yeah, it is.
- 34:12Daniel Moore: And, you know, that's a good valid point that I will say that for us, you know, you are an awesome decorator, and everybody comments on our home every time it's, you know, I'm super proud when people come over because we have a super nice house with the way that you've decorated it up and everything.
- 34:29Daniel Moore: But one thing that I've heard more often than not, even in the last house that we were in, um, people would tell us that our home just felt homey.
- 34:37Daniel Moore: And I think you've accomplished something when you can actually have that homey feeling because uh that's a that's a welcoming atmosphere.
- 34:44Michelle Moore: I wanted I want people to come in and feel loved.
- 34:47Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 34:47Michelle Moore: And like they're at home.
- 34:48Michelle Moore: Kick your shoes off, throw a blanket on.
- 34:50Michelle Moore: I don't care.
- 34:51Michelle Moore: I just I I I don't, it's all just stuff.
- 34:55Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 34:56Daniel Moore: So that's the first one.
- 34:58Daniel Moore: The second one approachable.
- 35:00Daniel Moore: Yeah, go ahead.
- 35:01Michelle Moore: Share your story.
- 35:03Michelle Moore: People relate to transparency more than perfection.
- 35:07Michelle Moore: Share your journey, the good, the bad, and the grace in between.
- 35:11Michelle Moore: I was waiting for it to say the ugly.
- 35:14Michelle Moore: Let them see how faith has shaped your decisions, your parenting, your forgiveness, and your love.
- 35:20Michelle Moore: And I really like that because faith has changed so much in our lives that I can see how it has definitely shaped everything we've done since we allowed the Lord to be a big part of it.
- 35:35Michelle Moore: Or to be the to be the head of it.
- 35:38Michelle Moore: I mean, in all reality, I look at it now, and it is so different.
- 35:42Michelle Moore: So different.
- 35:43Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 35:44Daniel Moore: And I grew up in a church where everybody's tight-lipped, nobody wanted to share anything about the experiences experiences they'd been through.
- 35:52Daniel Moore: And so I literally really learned nothing until the time I was 15 except that I wasn't good enough for everybody else because they're all perfect and I'm not.
- 36:00Daniel Moore: And so whenever we got married and then we started Life Group, uh, one thing that we were imperative on was we were going to be open with our dirty laundry.
- 36:10Daniel Moore: And we had a ton of it by that time.
- 36:11Michelle Moore: That was way after our dirty laundry, by the way.
- 36:14Daniel Moore: That was after everything had happened, and we had a good testimony.
- 36:17Michelle Moore: We prayed about it though, yeah, for several years before we talked about it.
- 36:22Daniel Moore: Yeah, and it was a college-age young adult group.
- 36:25Daniel Moore: And how many times, I don't can't count the amount of times that someone came up out of our class and said, We are so thankful you guys are transparent because I was well, I'm walking through something similar to that, or I've got so-and-so that's walking through something similar to that.
- 36:40Daniel Moore: And it makes me feel good to know that there is some hope, that there's a way out of this because you guys opened up and spoke about that.
- 36:48Daniel Moore: And I don't think people realize how important it is sometimes to be a little transparent about the bad choices that you've made and how you've picked yourself back up again and got God in the middle of it and fixed stuff with God's help.
- 37:02Daniel Moore: It's super important for some people to hear that.
- 37:05Michelle Moore: And I think that God opens the doors for that.
- 37:07Daniel Moore: Yes.
- 37:08Michelle Moore: You know, to be able to share your testimony, to share what you walk through.
- 37:12Michelle Moore: Um, if you're just talking about it, to be talking about it, that's one thing.
- 37:16Michelle Moore: But I feel like the Lord really leads people to us for that testimony and to be able to talk and to pour into them.
- 37:23Daniel Moore: I agree.
- 37:23Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 37:24Daniel Moore: So make sure that you're open to doing that, to share your story and use it as a testimony to make sure that other people can have the same experience as you have in, you know, in your marriage.
- 37:35Daniel Moore: The third thing is pray with and for them.
- 37:38Daniel Moore: There's something powerful about a couple knowing someone is praying for their marriage.
- 37:42Daniel Moore: And we get asked that a lot.
- 37:44Daniel Moore: We have text strings with different people and and we've asked for prayer.
- 37:48Daniel Moore: I mean, that that's a good prayer, open prayer line right there with text messaging uh to send back and forth.
- 37:55Daniel Moore: You know, if you have those people in your life, send them a text after they've had a tough week.
- 37:59Daniel Moore: Pray with them when you meet.
- 38:01Daniel Moore: Teach them how to pray together as a couple if it's something that's new to them.
- 38:05Daniel Moore: And this is one of those things that even Michelle and I, you know, we we have a regular prayer life throughout the day that we ever most things that we do, we pray at multiple times throughout the day, just over different things that we go through over our meals or for, you know, the needs on our prayer board down in our in our bed in our bedroom.
- 38:26Daniel Moore: Uh if if we get a request during the day from someone that somebody needs prayer, we'll stop and do that.
- 38:31Daniel Moore: Prayer is so important.
- 38:33Daniel Moore: And you got to make sure that not only though are you praying for someone, but when you pray for them, you're setting a good standard for them to follow also.
- 38:42Daniel Moore: Because then when they see that the importance that prayer is to you and how God's worked in your life, then they'll realize that, you know, there must be something to this.
- 38:50Daniel Moore: So I need to make sure I keep prayer in my marriage.
- 38:52Michelle Moore: That's good.
- 38:52Daniel Moore: And so that's another good way to disciple someone or a couple that's younger than you, or even older couples.
- 38:58Daniel Moore: Sometimes they don't know either.
- 39:00Daniel Moore: So what's number four?
- 39:01Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 39:01Michelle Moore: Um, study the word together, whether it's a marriage-focused book, a scripture study, or simply reading a few verses during your time together.
- 39:11Michelle Moore: Keep the word central.
- 39:13Michelle Moore: Remind them that they're building on a foundation far stronger than feelings or circumstances.
- 39:18Michelle Moore: I mean, that says it right there.
- 39:20Michelle Moore: There's not really anything else to add to that.
- 39:22Michelle Moore: I mean, as a Christian couple, you know, we should be studying the word together.
- 39:27Michelle Moore: Yep.
- 39:27Michelle Moore: And it is, and I I want to just put this out there because the enemy is going to be like, well, you didn't do this one night, or you didn't do this, you know, you didn't pray together and you didn't um read the Bible together.
- 39:43Michelle Moore: Just so that, you know, the enemy likes for our marriages to fail.
- 39:46Daniel Moore: Yep.
- 39:47Michelle Moore: So if you don't do it every day, that's okay.
- 39:51Michelle Moore: It is all right.
- 39:52Michelle Moore: If you don't do it for a week, it's okay.
- 39:55Michelle Moore: I'm not giving you the green light to never do it.
- 39:58Michelle Moore: But what I'm saying is that the enemy is fighting you constantly about you not being good enough and you're a failure because you can't do it.
- 40:05Michelle Moore: Set a reminder.
- 40:06Michelle Moore: Ask your spouse to help you.
- 40:09Michelle Moore: Be intentional about it.
- 40:11Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 40:12Daniel Moore: Yeah, that's some good pointers there.
- 40:14Daniel Moore: Uh, and as you said, I think another point there besides the Bible, I do think it's good, especially for young couples.
- 40:21Daniel Moore: There are tons of resources out there for marriages.
- 40:24Daniel Moore: And I know this does not happen real often where couples will get books and read them together.
- 40:28Michelle Moore: And yeah, we don't do that.
- 40:30Daniel Moore: We we I read a lot of things, but you read often I do.
- 40:35Daniel Moore: And but I do I do see the value in that.
- 40:37Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 40:37Daniel Moore: You know, especially for younger couples that are starting out because there's so much wisdom they can glean other authors and people that you know, marriage ministries.
- 40:46Daniel Moore: The fifth one is encourage consistency, not perfection.
- 40:50Daniel Moore: Growth grows, or growth comes in the daily choices to love well, forgive quickly, and seek God faithfully.
- 40:58Daniel Moore: Encourage them when progress feels slow or when setbacks come, pour grace over their journey because it is easy to get discouraged.
- 41:07Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 41:07Daniel Moore: If you're trying to move forward in something and you're trying to make something out of your marriage, and it seems like you keep coming up against these roadblocks, it's really easy to get discouraged with that.
- 41:17Daniel Moore: And if it keeps happening, you may just stop trying.
- 41:20Daniel Moore: And that's not the point of it all.
- 41:22Daniel Moore: The point is consistency.
- 41:24Daniel Moore: God will help you.
- 41:25Daniel Moore: And if you keep him, if you're doing the prayer and the Bible reading and all this other stuff, God will be right there in the middle of all that and he'll reward your consistency.
- 41:32Michelle Moore: And if you're discipling a couple as we're talking about these, you know, and if you see that, you know, just say, hey, you know, I'm praying for you guys, I'm encouraging you guys, um, you're doing great.
- 41:47Michelle Moore: You know, just because we have, you know, a setback doesn't mean that God's got more for you, or he's working you through this, you know, and see what he's doing in your life.
- 41:58Michelle Moore: You know, what is it that you can see that he's trying to work on?
- 42:03Michelle Moore: What, you know, both of you, what is it that he's trying to show you?
- 42:06Michelle Moore: And that, you know, what is the reason why you can't, you know, do whatever it may be?
- 42:13Michelle Moore: Let's talk about this.
- 42:14Michelle Moore: But you guys are doing great.
- 42:16Michelle Moore: I think encouragement goes a long way from another couple that's helping disciple.
- 42:20Daniel Moore: Yeah, it does.
- 42:21Daniel Moore: That's for sure.
- 42:22Daniel Moore: Go ahead and share the next one.
- 42:23Michelle Moore: Be there for the milestones and the mundane, cheer them on during promotions, new babies, and anniversaries, but also show it show up during losses, parenting struggles, or just navigating a tough week.
- 42:37Michelle Moore: Legacy is built in those small touch points over time.
- 42:41Michelle Moore: And I as I'm reading this, this is something very interesting to me because if you really think about it, if you're there and you're discipling them, notice it says talks about new babies, anniversaries, parenting struggles, a tough week.
- 43:00Michelle Moore: This isn't just a week discipleship.
- 43:04Michelle Moore: This is just not a a three-month discipleship.
- 43:07Michelle Moore: This is doing life together year after year.
- 43:10Michelle Moore: Just, you know, that's that's the way I take that.
- 43:13Michelle Moore: Is that how you look at it?
- 43:15Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 43:15Michelle Moore: Okay.
- 43:16Daniel Moore: Yeah.
- 43:16Daniel Moore: Um, you know, they need to know that there's somebody that's seeing these milestones that they're going through.
- 43:23Daniel Moore: And there's no better way to do that than if they have us as mentors and they really look up to us and respect what we have to say.
- 43:31Daniel Moore: That'll go a long way, just like you said.
- 43:33Daniel Moore: And actually, you kind of touched on this with the last point when you was talking about the encouragement.
- 43:37Daniel Moore: Uh, you know, just being an encouraging type person uh to those couples just can you can get miles out of that.
- 43:44Michelle Moore: Well, and you build relationships.
- 43:46Michelle Moore: And it's I think it's rewarding to me to see people grow.
- 43:52Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 43:52Michelle Moore: Especially in their marriages.
- 43:54Michelle Moore: And over time, you know, it's just like, you know, even as our kids, as they grow in their marriages.
- 44:00Michelle Moore: Marriages.
- 44:01Michelle Moore: It it satisfies my soul.
- 44:03Michelle Moore: Like, you know, it's like I know they're growing, and God's gonna do something bigger in their marriage, and He's going before them, and they're putting Him first.
- 44:12Daniel Moore: Yep, it means a lot, yeah.
- 44:14Daniel Moore: That's for sure.
- 44:15Daniel Moore: And the seventh and final point here, challenge them toward purpose.
- 44:19Daniel Moore: Help them see that their marriage is not just for personal happiness.
- 44:23Daniel Moore: A lot of times that's when they come into marriage, you know, we all think, well, I'm just gonna be happy, so I'm ready to get married, you know.
- 44:30Daniel Moore: That's not the whole purpose behind it.
- 44:32Daniel Moore: It's also for Kingdom Impact.
- 44:33Daniel Moore: I love that.
- 44:34Daniel Moore: You know, help them discover how they can serve others, raise children in faith, and be a light in their community.
- 44:39Michelle Moore: So good.
- 44:40Daniel Moore: And that'll go a long ways.
- 44:42Daniel Moore: And and and then if you're able, if that's a an accomplished thing that happens, guess who gets to be a part of that?
- 44:51Daniel Moore: We do.
- 44:51Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 44:52Daniel Moore: You know, when that marriage flourishes and they move on to be good, godly couple, and they raise their kids right, and then you see them pouring into another couple later on down the road.
- 45:02Daniel Moore: Uh it's so satisfying to know that we had a part in that.
- 45:05Daniel Moore: You know, God called us to do it, and we stuck it through and through.
- 45:08Michelle Moore: Yeah.
- 45:09Daniel Moore: So is there anything that you want to add to this episode this week as we wrap it up here?
- 45:14Michelle Moore: No.
- 45:15Michelle Moore: It's good.
- 45:16Michelle Moore: Super good.
- 45:17Daniel Moore: Some really good stuff here.
- 45:18Daniel Moore: We'll come back next week with part two of this.
- 45:21Daniel Moore: And when we do that, we will finish up what it means to have a legacy in a marriage.
- 45:27Daniel Moore: When it's all said and done, the true impact of our discipleship will not be measured in how many dinners we hosted, but in the fruit their marriage bears.
- 45:35Daniel Moore: Long after we're gone.
- 45:37Daniel Moore: If they go on to disciple another couple, raise God-honoring children, or build a legacy of faith in their own family, that's when we know that we've left something eternal, just like you and I were just talking about.
- 45:48Daniel Moore: It's not about creating a fan club, it's about building a chain reaction of faith one couple at a time.
- 45:54Daniel Moore: And that is how legacies are born.
- 46:16Daniel Moore: Well, as we close up this week, don't forget to visit our website at marriagelifeandmore.com for all of our resources that are there.
- 46:23Daniel Moore: And if you've enjoyed this whole series, you can actually have this series in the form of a book.
- 46:27Daniel Moore: It's not the exact same series.
- 46:29Daniel Moore: You read the book, it's gonna be a little different, but it follows the same uh blueprint.
- 46:34Daniel Moore: So if you want to get a copy of that, you can go to our resources page.
- 46:37Daniel Moore: We've got some other options there as well for marriage that you can purchase.
- 46:41Daniel Moore: And we've also got our newest release out, which is the verse by verse study in Isaiah chapters one through 39.
- 46:48Daniel Moore: And all of that is on our website at Marriage Life and more.
- 46:52Daniel Moore: So go check that out.
- 46:53Daniel Moore: You can also reach us from there with a contact page if you'd like to reach out, uh, be on social media, follow us on there, make comments, uh, add to the stories as we go through these episodes each week.
- 47:04Daniel Moore: We'd love to hear from you.
- 47:05Daniel Moore: Well, to wrap up this week's episode, here's the question that we want to leave with you.
- 47:09Daniel Moore: If someone followed your marriage around for the next 30 days, what would they learn about Jesus?
- 47:15Daniel Moore: Not because you're perfect, but because of the way you love, forgive, serve, encourage, and stay faithful to one another.
- 47:23Daniel Moore: The greatest legacy that you'll ever leave won't be your house, your retirement account, or the things you've accumulated.
- 47:30Daniel Moore: It'll be the example of a marriage that consistently pointed people to Christ.
- 47:35Daniel Moore: Long after the wedding photos have faded and your anniversary celebrations are forgotten, the impact of your faithfulness can still be echoing through your children, your grandchildren, your church, your friends, and the couples that you've invested in.
- 47:49Daniel Moore: So this week, don't try to do something spectacular.
- 47:52Daniel Moore: Simply choose faithfulness, pray together, encourage one another, forgive quickly, invite a younger couple out for coffee, open your home, share your story, build your marriage one Christ-centered decision at a time, because ordinary acts of obedience, repeated over a lifetime, create extraordinary legacies.
- 48:13Daniel Moore: Your marriage may never be famous, but if it faithfully points others to Jesus, it'll never be forgotten in eternity.
- 48:23Daniel Moore: Well, that's all for this week, and we pray that your marriage is stronger and your walk with God is closer after this episode.
- 48:29Daniel Moore: This episode is recorded in the upper room at our Connecting the Gap Studios.
- 48:33Daniel Moore: This is an extension of Connecting the Gap Ministries.
- 48:35Daniel Moore: We pray that you have a blessed week.
